Executive Committee

President’s Message Matt Kinning, HBAL President

The Spring Parade of Homes starts on Mother’s Day, May 9th. There are 30 homes in this Spring’s Parade, with 26 of them open to the public. We are looking forward to once again showcasing our builders' and subcontactors' hard work and talent. Be sure to find time to attend, weekends 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., weeknights 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. HBAL leadership is continuing to work with LES on their proposed new requirements of conduit installation by builders on new home construction. LES has delayed their implementation of the new requirement as we work with them to structure a pilot program to hopefully keep costs down. The new requirement could add up to $1,500-$2,000 to each new home. We are working hard to keep housing affordable. Make sure to vote in next week’s City of Lincoln general election. HOMEPAC has supported the following candidates for City Council: Roy Christensen, Tom Beckius, Bennie Shobe, Mary Hilton and Sändra Washington. HOMEPAC also supported HBAL member, Jason Krueger for Airport Authority.

Lead Hazard Control Program

City of Lincoln Seeks Contractors for Lead Hazard Control Program Projects The City of Lincoln, through its Urban Development Department, has received a three-year, $3 Million Lead Hazard Control Grant and is seeking contractors interested in participating in housing rehab projects to complete interim control or abatement of lead based paint. The City estimates 165 projects over the next three years in residential housing units built prior to 1978 and with at least one child under the age of 6. City Purchasing will be issuing a unit price bid and successful bidders will be placed on an approved contractor list. As projects are identified by the City, contractors on the list will be contacted for availability and a quote. Work is for construction only, lead testing will be completed by the City. Training is required to work on these projects and will be paid by the City of Lincoln. Every contractor will be required to be licensed by the State of Nebraska as a lead abatement firm which requires the company to have at least one statelicensed lead supervisor. Lead Supervisor training is 32 hours over four days. All workers must have received at least one-day HUD/EPA approved lead paint safety training; workers who assist with abatement must have completed twoday lead worker training. All contractors must also be EPA Certified Renovation Firms with at least one certified renovator. Training will be scheduled as contractors are identified.

HBAL Members Donate Labor & Materials to Friendship Home

HBAL Members Donate Labor & Materials to Friendship Home In Nebraska, nearly 34% of women and 28% of men will experience some form of domestic violence within their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. That’s why organizations such as Lincoln’s Friendship Home play an integral role in the community as they provide victims with a safe, secure and confidential shelter. This spring, two members of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln (HBAL), Stephens & Smith Construction and Ready Mixed Concrete Co., teamed up for a driveway and parking lot project at the Friendship Home. “We felt it was a great opportunity to collaborate with our industry partners to do something specifically for a community-based organization,” Ready Mixed Concrete Co. General Manager James Hamlette said. “It was a terrific project for a worthy cause and a great opportunity to work as a team to give back to our community.” Ready Mixed Concrete Co. and Stephens & Smith have partnered on projects for many years. “We enjoy giving back and volunteering our time because it makes us feel like we’re strengthening our community and truly making an impact,” Stephens & Smith Business Development Manager Jereme Montgomery said. “We were happy to have HBAL’s Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation reach out to us to help with this project. I call it food for the soul because it always feels good to help others.” Friendship Home Maintenance Worker Tom Neukirch was amazed by the community’s generosity and describes the employees working on the project as the “A Team.”

Click here to view more photos.

“They were completely professional and kept me abreast about every single little thing,” said the threeyear employee. “The employees were approachable, nice and a good team. I just couldn’t believe how well they worked together.” When it was all said and done, the project, which involved about 15 yards of concrete, didn’t cost the Friendship Home a dime as the Abel Foundation made a cash donation for the concrete and Stephens & Smith Construction donated their services. 17  Lincoln Business Builder

Social Engineering

SOCIAL ENGINEERING

Social engineering is any act that influences a person to take an action that may or may not be in their best interest.

PHISHING

Common Tactics

Emails that appear to be from a reputable source. They urge you to take action or attempt to gain personal information.

VISHING

Attempting to gain access or important information from you over the phone. Spoofed phone numbers may be used.

IMPERSONATION

Using a detailed background story while posing as someone else with the goal of obtaining information, physical access, or computer access.

Spotting A Social Engineering Attack Social engineering attacks often rely on one or more tactics to get you to take action. Watch out for these common signs:

1

They request something of value from you. They might request bank account numbers, personal information, usernames, passwords, access to your computer or mobile devices.

2

They want to keep the matter “secret” or “private.” Because any attempts to verify the authenticity of the request would easily expose the true nature of the attack.

3

They need you to take urgent action. By rushing you along, they hope to keep you off balance, limiting your natural ability to detect when something isn’t quite right.

4

They approach you from a position of authority. We are taught not to question authority and attackers use this to their advantage. They often work the names of authority figures into conversation or pose as one. This could be executives, security guards, or even a popular person at the company.

5

They start slow. Social engineering attacks often start slowly and build momentum over time. Several interactions could occur before you even realize you’re a victim.
