FOR KIDS LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

Whilst we all look forward to December holidays – especially the kids who can’t wait for that final school bell to ring – we also know that it can be hard to keep kids and teens stimulated and entertained for so many weeks. Cresta Shopping Centre has teamed up with the Johannesburg Academy for Theatre Arts (JATA) as well as e² Young Engineers (ESYE) to create two exciting holiday club workshops that promise to both entertain and educate. Whether your child is more inclined to the arts, or has a passion for science and technology, bring them along to Cresta for some holiday fun.

THE JATA HOLIDAY CLUB The Johannesburg Academy for Theatre Arts holiday club is

aimed at all school-going children and focuses on coordination, musicality expression, voice projection, improvisation and performance. The classes offered will encourage kids to engage in singing, dancing and acting in order to equip them with the necessary skills required to become what they term "triple-threat" performers. There are numerous benefits of training in the arts, including enhanced self-esteem and confidence, improved social skills and strengthened problem solving and thinking abilities. JATA workshops will take place between the 9th and 13th of December and the 6th and 10th of January 2020 at Cresta Shopping Centre between 08h30 and 13h00. The children will be divided into three categories Minis (5-9), Juniors (10-13) and Seniors (older teens). At the end of the week they will put on a showcase performance for the parents to see what they have achieved throughout the workshop. Since parents will be dropping children off, security will be top of mind. Children will be signed in at the door and receive an identifying wrist band. A security guard will be posted at the door and children will not be allowed to leave the venue except with their parents/guardian with a matching Identiband. Children must be collected by 13:30. Dates: 9-13 December, 17-21 December 2019 and 6-10 January 2020 Times: 8:30 – 13:00 Venue: Upper Level Foodcourt next to Mugg & Bean Access: TBC e-mail info@jata.co.za for booking and further details Please follow our website and social media profiles for more information.

FESTIVE FUN Cresta Shopping Centre in Randburg, one of the largest shopping centres in South Africa, launched an exciting feature this year – the CrestAquarium – a spectacular marine educational centre complete with an aquarium that is home to 32 exotic reef fish from the Indo Pacific region.

THE

CRESTAQUARIUM RETAIL “THERAPY” AT CRESTA SHOPPING CENTRE

Whilst the soothing and calming benefits of watching fish and marine creatures serenely gliding around an aquarium has long been recognized as stress relieving, studies from as far afield as Plymouth* and Exeter** Universities in the UK have confirmed a correlation between this and both mental and physical health. The study showed that watching fish lowered both the heart rate and blood pressure of participants, who also reported feeling more positive and a greater sense of well-being. Created by a marine aquarist and specialist custom aquarium builders who have maintained more than 70 Aquariums around Gauteng for over 10 years, the CrestAquarium is the perfect ‘home away from home’ for the wide array of fish.

8

CRESTA FESTIVE SEASON 2019

Marketing Manager for Cresta Shopping Centre, Roshina Rajkumar, said that Cresta, which had always retained a certain nostalgia with many of its shoppers who have been frequenting the centre for years, has evolved into one of Johannesburg’s shopping and leisure icons. With over 260 stores and an immense variety of quality offerings, it has become a hub of fashion, food, décor, tech and services. "The CrestAquarium takes the retail experience to a whole new level, appealing to a wide variety of different age groups” she said. Whilst this might just be the perfect antidote to a stressful shopping trip, the main reason that Cresta Shopping Centre created the CrestAquarium was to educate visitors to the centre about the importance of our

“We all hear about the crises facing our oceans and sea life on a regular basis, but it’s up to each and every one of us to make a change so that there is a knock-on, positive impact. As Cresta, we hope that by creating awareness and educating more visitors to our centre, we can help create momentum to change behaviours that will benefit our oceans in the long run” continues Rajkumar.

FESTIVE FUN

oceans, the damage caused by pollution, the need to cut down on the use of single use plastics and the need for sustainable fishing.

In order to do so, the CrestAquarium created its own mascot – Crestal – who is a voice for the ocean and seeks to unite people of the land with the marvels of the ocean. Her story, one that many South Africans can associate with, begins by unwittingly contributing to the pollution of marine life without fully understanding the impact of her actions. Only once submersed into underwater life by one of the sea creatures does Crestal, dressed in the colours of the ocean with wavy anemone-like hair, experience the dangers of sea pollution first-hand and assume responsibility to educate humans on the need to care for the oceans. Crestal, the brainchild of a Northcliff High School Grade 10 pupil, Rebecca Byker, addresses the public on issues such as plastic recycling, the importance of preventing wastage and awareness of the sustainable fishing list. Rebecca and her school both won R10 000 for her vision and design as Cresta encourages collaborative teamwork with the community. Something not to be missed, and which is sure to provide plenty of entertainment for the whole family, is feeding time for these fascinating aquatic residents. There are scheduled times between 12 noon to 12:20pm on specific dates over the festive season when shoppers can visit the CrestAquarium to watch the inhabitants being fed. So mark the dates below on your calendar and get ready for some great photo opportunities. WISHING YOU

A CONSCIOUS

CHRISTMAS GOING GREEN THIS FESTIVE SEASON

In an age characterized by environmental and climate crises, we all have a responsibility to make conscious, sustainable decisions to minimize the negative impact on the planet. Whilst Christmas has become synonymous with celebration, gifting and spoilery, many of us are guilty of over-looking the environmental impact of our choices whilst in the spirit of giving. It may mean creating new traditions, forgoing old ones or finding completely new ways to celebrate, but every one of us has a responsibility to consciously make better festive choices.

FRIENDLY GIFT 1. EARTH WRAPPING Whilst many of us assume wrapping ‘paper’ can be recycled – most of it in fact can’t be as it is laminated with plastic, foil or other non-paper materials. So whilst the shiny, glittery and textured paper may make for beautiful gift displays below the tree, it’s simply adding more single-use packaging to our landfills, leaving the environment feeling remarkably less festive and joyful.

10

CRESTA FESTIVE SEASON 2019

SUGGESTION Wrap gifts in unlam inated brown pape r which is environm friendly and can be entally recycled. Whilst th is may seem a borin it gives you an oppo g alternative, rtunity to personal ize each gift – mak upcycled ribbon (fr e us e of twine, om previous gifts) or use ink stamps or ha images from your ch nd-drawn ildren to customize each gift for the recip Keep gift bags and ients. other re-useable pa ckaging for re-giftin creative ways to pa g an d look for ckage gifts that don’ t use non-recyclabl e materials.

Whilst popping Christmas crackers have become a tradition for many families at the Christmas table (as well as being an aesthetically appealing addition to the table décor), they also create a significant amount of packaging waste – most of it being non-recyclable. Depending on the price range, most are filled with plastic toys and items which are discarded and inevitably end up in our seas and landfills. Avoid the Christmas cracker trap and resist the temptation to add to the trolley in the checkout queue – the planet will thank you!

3.

THE SEASON OF GIVING

Christmas is known as the season of giving, but in an age characterized by environmental and climate consciousness, less really is more. Forego all the presents bought for the sake of giving something and rather make purchases based on value, purpose, meaning and genuine need. Teach children that Christmas is less about receiving gifts and more about giving back – particularly to the environment and those less fortunate – for the greater good.

4.

NAUGHTY OR NICE – KEEPING IT CARBON NEUTRAL.

They say that for every action, there is a reaction, and the same applies to Christmas shopping and preparation. Whilst it’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of the holiday, it’s important to consider the environmental impact of our decisions. It’s traditionally a popular time for travel, which is one of the biggest contributors to pollution and carbon emissions, but apart from staying home for the holidays, be sure to check out ways to offset your carbon emissions for a guilt-free Christmas holiday!

SUGGESTION

If the intention is to provide ea ch guest with a one that adds a small gift – little pizzazz to the table décor consider provid – then ing something practical or ed be consumed or ible that can has long term usage. Make ho salad dressing memade in glass bottles that guests can or provide kids take home, with themed co okies and cupc colourful bath akes, or bombs made fr om Epsom salts ingredients. Maya Angelou once famously said,

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” For many of us, Christmas traditions have spanned eras and generations, so we continue without giving it much thought. This year, we encourage everyone to take a more conscious approach to Christmas and bear in mind that the greatest gift we could give each other is a collective commitment to preserving our planet. DIY ADVENT CALENDARS 12

CRESTA FESTIVE SEASON 2019

SHOPPING

LET THE COUNTDOWN BEGIN Advent calendars make the long-awaited countdown to Christmas Day that much more bearable for kids and adults alike (or more agonising for some depending on how great their will power is). The traditional chocolate-a-day advent calendars are still very much alive and popular and can be seen in retailers from as early as the beginning of November, but with a more health conscious, sugar-aware society and an explosion in creativity thanks to the internet and social media, there are so many ways to custom make advent calendars suitable for the person it is intended for. Whether you’re looking for a fun family tradition or just a healthier alternative to the traditional chocolate advent calendars, we’ve found some ideas for DIY advent calendars:

KIDS • A book a day for 24 days – make it a tradition to have story time at bedtime every night before Christmas • Beauty boxes for girls – mini nailpolishes, lipgloss, nail art, glitters pots and so forth • Lego boxes for boys – purchase a box of Lego and split the pieces amongst 24 envelopes so they can build the final product on Christmas Eve (just be sure to keep the pieces in a safe place) • Christmas ornaments – families can create or buy an ornament that is to be hung each day leading up to Christmas day, progressively decorating the Christmas tree.

ADULTS • A love letter per day – they can be short and sweet (even just a quote which has meaning to your relationship), but will be an absolute treat for the recipient • A photo per day – provide them with 24 photos, placed backwards in a peg-frame and allow them to turn over one photo per day.

• For the ladies – consider providing a charm a day for a charm bracelet • Eats and Treats – consider packaging your significant others’ favourite snacks (chocolates, nougat, liqueurs or spirits etc ) into daily bite-size spoils

PETS • A treat per day – it could be biscuits, cow hooves or toys – no matter what your pampered pet prefers, let them receive a treat per day as they help countdown to Christmas Day.

Alternatively – consider a “G iving Back Box” item of food or whereby an non-perishable item (for exam food, a blanket, pl e - tinned a water bottle, wet wipes, a to and so forth) is ile t ro ll, toiletries placed in a box ever y day for th before Christm e 24 days as, and on Christ mas Day this bo and given to so x can be taken meone less fort unate who’s Chr may otherwise istmas Day have been signi ficantly less fest ive.

FASHION

2019 FUNCTIONAL FASHIONABLY

SUMMER TRENDS 2019

Summer has arrived – although considering how hot Spring was it may feel like it’s been here for a while. With heat waves and hot summer days ahead, the fashion focus is on shorts, dresses and floppy sun hats. Versatility is the name of the game with functional fashion items that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion or time of day.

TOP 5 SUMMER TRENDS 1. Bermuda & Bike Shorts Shorts are a must in any Summer wardrobe and Bermuda’s, and their tighter, more fitted cousin – bike shorts, are in this Summer. Versatile Bermudas can be comfy, casual or dressed up with crop tops and strappy heels. Check out Zara’s collection of Bermuda shorts including shiny, metallic fabrics that make for easy transformation from daytime look to night!

2. Lilac & Lavender This colour palette is set to make waves this Summer and thankfully is fairly flattering for almost all skin tones.

3. Floppy Hats We all know that protecting our skin, and especially our faces from the sun is critical, and luckily the trend toward floppy hats means it can be fashionable and functional. Woolworths and Truworths both have an extensive range of fashionable floppy hats to get your wardrobe Summer-ready!

4. Leafy Prints Nothing says Summer quite like Delicious Monsters and palm leaf prints and these tropical-inspired garments are right on point! Mr Price,

5. Dress & Sneakers The dress and sneaker trend was popular last Summer and it hasn’t lost its appeal. It’s a perfect mix of fun, flirty and casual. Check out Forever New’s collection of whimsical, floaty summer dresses that can easily be paired with a set of sneakers or Summery slops.

DINING OUT

SPOILER ALERT Whether you’re heading to Cresta for your weekly shop, a date, a retail therapy session, lunch with mates or a chilled-out session at the movies, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options.Take a seat at one of these eateries and let your taste buds share the festive season spirit.

PLAKA When you walk through the doors of Plaka in Cresta, you could be fooled for thinking you’ve been teleported to Santorini in Greece with its crisp white walls and blue accents. It’s not just the décor that has an authentic Greek flavor, the menu is filled with traditional Greek dishes that are as much of a mouthful as their names are (Galaktoboureko - #EnoughSaid). One thing Mediterranean countries get so right is their love of shared meals, enjoyed with a crisp glass of wine and a view. Whilst the view from Plaka isn’t quite an ocean backdrop (although Northcliff Hill does provide a fairly good alternative), Plaka does provide a comprehensive Tapas menu filled with small taster plates that include Greek favourites such as olives, squid heads, feta, dolmades and dips with pita bread. If you’re not so keen on the traditional Greek cuisine, there are more than sufficient alternatives on the menu to ensure there is something for everyone at the table. Whether you’re booking for a date, a family dinner or a work function, Plaka won’t disappoint. Shop U224, Entrance 12 T: 011 478 0392

TURN N TENDER Since 1977 the Turn ’n Tender brand, created by four brothers in Johannesburg, has grown to become known as one of the best steakhouse franchises in the country. Their love for great steak and a taste for good wine is evident in the extensive menu selection, leaving diners spoilt for choice when it comes to cuts, bastings, sauces and sides. No matter your preference – a juicy rare sirloin or a medium-well fillet – there's no judgement here, just a desire to serve delicious food, with excellent service and lifelong memories made.

WAFFLE STOP Don’t let the name fool you as The Waffle Stop offers so much more than just your traditional sweet waffles served with a side of syrup and ice cream! Waffle Stop also provides gourmet burgers and pizza – with a twist however, as the buns and bases are waffles. The humble waffle has long been underrated as a savoury accompaniment but the Belgian –inspired dessert is set to make a comeback as its versatility grows. Shop UL24 T: 071 114 7554

Their menu is typically South African, with local dishes like marrow bones and lamb potjie standing out as some of the obvious favourites, but they also cater for foreign tastes with their speciality steaks, giving it an interesting twist with different flavours. For the non-meat eaters, they do have chicken, fish and vegetarian options available as well, making it a perfect venue for birthdays, celebrations and corporate events. Shop: U47a Tel: 011 678 0155

From sushi to salads, fresh fish and chips to extensive seafood combos fit for sharing, the menu ensures there is something for everyone. DINING OUT

Celebrating the festive season in Africa means hot Summer days, which lends itself to cold desserts and refreshing treats. One way to reinvent a South African favourite with some festive flair is to make a Milk Tart Mille Feuille.

INGREDIENTS: Half a cup of sugar Half a cup of plain cake flour 2 large eggs 2 cups of milk 1 tbs butter Pinch of salt

Almond essence Woolworths All Butter Puff Pastry Half a cup fresh cream Castor sugar Ground cinnamon Icing sugar

TO MAKE THE MILK TART FILLING: 1. Mix the flour and sugar, add the eggs and whisk until smooth. 2. Gradually add the milk whilst whisking, followed by a pinch of salt. 3. Place mixture in a thick-bottomed saucepan over a medium-low heat and stir in the butter. 4. Bring to a boil and continuously stir until the mixture is thick and the flour cooked (roughly ten minutes). 5. Add a few drops of almond essence. 6. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool . This can be made beforehand and refrigerated.

TO MAKE THE MILLE FEUILLE: 1. Cut one sheet of puff pastry into three equal strips. Sift over a bit of castor sugar and place the strips on a baking tray lined with baking paper. 2. Top with another sheet of baking paper and place a second baking tray on top to weigh it down. Bake in a preheated 200 degree Celsius oven for 20 minutes. 3. Remove the top baking tray and baking paper and bake for a further 5-10 minutes until the pastry is cooked through and light golden brown. Allow the pastry to cool completely. 4. Whisk the cream with one tablespoon of castor sugar until stiff. Fold the cream through the milk tart filling. 5. To assemble the milk tart mille feuille, spoon the filling into a piping bag and pipe onto the first pastry sheet. Dust liberally with cinnamon. Repeat with the second layer. Place the third layer of pastry on top and dust the Milk Tart Mille Feuille with icing sugar. GIFT GUIDE

IMPRESS

WITHOUT THE STRESS TIPS FOR MEANINGFUL GIFTING

Christmas time and the festive season inspires people to focus on everything that is important in life – including family, quality time and the spirit of giving. It also, however, brings with it the tradition of gift giving which some feel has become over-commercialised and lost its sentimentality. If done purposefully though, gifting can be one of the most meaningful acts – whether for someone special or for a stranger through an act of kindness.

GIFT GUIDE

“You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give” ~ Unknown Most of us can attest to the Festive Season euphoria that commences the closer we get to December. Despite being the end of a long school and work year, everyone is buzzing with an energy and infectious excitement that comes with knowing holidays and family festivities are fast approaching. It also means budgeting and planning gifts for those near and dear – a feat which is often not as easy as we anticipate due to time and budget constraints, an overload of options and general indecision about what to get the people who have contributed so meaningfully to your life over the previous year or for those who or are perceived to ‘have everything’. If the economy hasn’t been kind this year, don’t worry, less money actually helps us as many of the most meaningful gifts you can give or receive cost next to nothing. We’ve determined the four top tips for meaningful gifting:

1. USE A SKILL There are few things more meaningful than handmade gifts. Whether you’re an active knitter, have an artistic streak or are adept at baking – utilize your skills to make personal, one-of-a-kind gifts that recipients will treasure long after the gift has been given. The items may not be perfect and the outcome may not be exactly as you had envisioned, but the time, effort and love that went into making it is the real gift and one that won’t go unappreciated.

3. CONSCIOUS CONSIDERATION Many of us are guilty of buying unnecessary or impractical gifts purely for the sake of giving ‘something’ on Christmas Day, but, with a worsening global environmental crisis, the onus falls on all of us to make more conscious decisions that won’t create an even more negative impact. Whether this means not giving a physical gift, but rather providing an act of service, giving ‘living gifts’ such as plants or trees that can be planted, or resisting the urge to buy a gift that has excessive amounts of unnecessary packaging and single-use plastics – let the gift be thoughtful consideration toward the environment.

4. MAKE A DIFFERENCE There is no shortage of ways to give back to the world whilst giving to the people that you love. You can donate towards a charity in someone else’s name or buy a gift that supports charity so that in giving to the people you wish to acknowledge, you’re simultaneously gifting someone less fortunate. You can select a charity close to your heart or consider one that would be most meaningful to the person being gifted – be it related to children, animals, the elderly or the environment. The gift of giving is a privilege so embrace the challenge of finding that perfect something for those who are important to you. By making it meaningful, the blessing extends beyond just the intended recipient.

2. USE NOSTALGIA Particularly when it comes to siblings and family members, gifts that bring back memories or are reminders of childhood - no matter how childish or impractical they may seem – are priceless in terms of nostalgic value. Whether it be a collector’s item from a show you used to watch, a toy or sweet which went out of production and has made a reappearance or tickets to a movie you used to love as children that has been remade – the thoughts and memories that will be evoked will ensure it’s one of the most meaningful gifts received.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

REALISTIC

RESOLUTIONS FOR

New year resolutions are often made with the greatest intentions, but then ‘life happens’ and we tend to revert to our normal modus operandi, rendering all ambitious life changes nul and void. With a tough economy, busy lifestyles and more daily demands, we recommend contemplating resolutions that are simple enough to stick to and that have long term benefits as motivation to persist.

1. FIND A SIDE HUSTLE With an increasingly tougher economy and persistently increasing cost of living, it’s important to diversify one’s income, not only for the benefits of additional income, but in case of labour issues (which have become reality for many) such as retrenchment.

2020

Whilst in years gone by, many referred to it as ‘passive income’ – there are few side jobs which are truly passive. Many, such as property investment, do require a fair degree of involvement and active participation, but the returns are significant to warrant it. In South Africa currently, there are a number of crowdfunding opportunities which one can invest in, which have equivalent interest rates as many of the financial services providers, and which have environmental and social upliftment benefits in addition. Impact Farming from Fedgroup is just one example, as is Solar Energy from Sun Exchange, and even mobility investment opportunities from the likes of Flexclub and Dryvar. Commit to investing in a side hustle in the new year and although you may only reap the benefits at a later stage, the sooner you start, the better your long-term returns.

46

CRESTA FESTIVE SEASON 2019

NEW YEAR YOU

2. CONCENTRATE ON HEALTH … OF THE ENVIRONMENT A common new years’ resolution relates to health (to lose weight, get fit, take out a gym contract or start living healthier) but few consider the health of the environment. With a looming climate crisis and already noticeable changes and damage to the oceans and natural habitats, becoming more environmentally conscious and making environmentally friendly choices is EVERYONE’s responsibility. Commit to recycling and reducing use of single-use plastics. Pick up litter in public places and plant more trees. Use water conservatively attempt to use solar energy where it is a possibility. By changing behavior on a daily basis, becoming environmentally friendly will become a habit and soon a lifestyle. You may think your contribution is insignificant in the greater scheme, but just imagine the impact if everyone in the world did their part! Let change start with you!

3. PAY IT FORWARD Kindness will never go out of fashion and also doesn’t have to cost a thing. It could be a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand for a neighbour or a word of encouragement for a stranger. The resilience of South Africans, along with the explosion of social media and public sharing platforms, has seen a positive undercurrent within the country with every day citizens doing their part to create small positive changes. From sharing CV’s of road side entrepreneurs, making an extra sandwich to give someone on the way to work, providing cold beverages for municipal workers slogging away in the heat, paying for someone else’s groceries or simply promoting small businesses and fostering the much-needed entrepreneurial spirit of the country – small acts of kindness go a long way to changing lives. Commit to doing one kind, positive thing every single day and soon it will become an infectious habit that will inspire others to do likewise. CRESTA FESTIVE SEASON 2019
