e’re well into Spring and on the home run towards December - hopefully for most this means a countdown to festive season celebrations and long-awaited holidays! For many of us in the equestrian industry, particularly those who work within the industry, it may mean business as usual BUT it does mean taking advantage of traffic free routes to stables and either sleeping in a little later or getting a few extra hours of quality time with the equine children… (unless you live near the coast – then brace yourself for the onslaught of GP number plates #SorryNotSorry). Talking of those in the industry who are unlikely to take a break over December - our cover star for this issue is South Africa’s current Champion jockey, Lyle Hewitson. What makes this young star worthy of all the accolades is the fact that he’s achieved this status whilst still in his apprenticeship – a feat which hasn’t been achieved since the early 1970’s. Lyle took a slightly different path into the world of horse racing compared to most but is riding the crest of a wave and we caught up with him shortly after the Equus Awards to find out more.

We chat to the Cart Horse Protection Association in Epping, Cape Town, about the amazing work they do and meet some of the “Carties” (as they’re affectionately known) who benefit from their services. For those of us who would prefer to contribute to a worthy cause than receive gifts from Santa’s sleigh – this NPO relies solely on public funding and would be a very worthy beneficiary #FoodForThought. With the World Equestrian Games (WEG) having just passed, we were exposed to reigning as a competitive sport – one of the only events in the Western discipline in which one can qualify for WEG. We headed to Parys for the Western Conference to meet some of South Africa’s up and coming Western athletes who recently competed in Texas – the home of Western Riding – and held their own amongst riders who have grown up with split reigns and Stetsons.

We didn’t neglect our canine companions in this issue either. We visited Old Mill Drift Guest Lodge in Clarens for a dog-friendly weekend away. The restored farm used to be a Trading Post during the Boer War but now serves as a lodge, function venue, 4x4 experience and stud farm with views for days and hikes a plenty. The farm has become famous for it’s herd of feral ponies who casually wander There are also many equines who wont be the property and greet guest in the hope that afforded the luxury of a December holiday your ‘padkos’ included carrots or apples. – apart from those competing recreationally – there are a number of cart horses who will Wishing our readers and your equines a be trawling the streets over the festive period fantastic last quarter of 2018 and best wishto make much needed income for the own- es for the upcoming festive season. LYLE HEWITSON

10 |

Equestrian LIFE - Oct-Dec 2018

When you mention the name Lyle Hewitson in the company of racing enthusiasts, you can expect responses such as “he’s setting the bar high” and “one of the best riders South Africa has ever produced”. The fact that these compliments come from some of horse racing’s greats confirms that the soon to be 21-year-old apprentice has a bright future ahead of him. he 2017/18 South African Horse Racing season wrapped up on the 31st of July and saw young Lyle Hewitson walk away with the coveted title of South African Champion Jockey. What makes this title even more auspicious is that he is only the second person, since Michael ‘Muis’ Roberts in the early 1970’s, to achieve this accolade whilst still in his apprenticeship. Whilst most jockeys enter the South African Jockey Academy in Summerveld to begin their apprenticeship as they begin high school, Lyle followed a fairly different path. Coming from a family firmly entrenched in the industry, his parents, mom Samantha and former Port Elizabeth based jockey, Carl, insisted that he complete his education before deciding on his career path. He matriculated from Kearsney College in 2015 with five distinctions and awards for excellence in hockey and cricket. Throughout this time, Lyle never lost his passion for racing and combined his studies with work riding whenever the opportunity arose. He began competing in the Work Rider series and rode his first winner in October 2013 as a 15-yearold amateur before entering the academy formally to begin his apprenticeship in January 2016. “Racing is my passion, the only thing I’ve had my heart set on. It’s a hobby I can make into my career and I feel it’s important to do what you love,” says Hewitson. He caught the eye of all racing pundits early on in his career – not just because of his continuous success, but due to his commendable work ethic and likeable temperament. He had his first race ride at Scottsville on 6 March 2016 and his first winner just short of two weeks later aboard Blizzard Belle at Fairview. The filly was owned by his dad making the victory even more memorable as he entered the winners box in his fathers racing silks. Lyle went on to win two National Champion

Apprentice titles before smashing the apprentice win record which was set by Gavin Lerena back in 2007. Prior to that, the record was held for almost 40 years by Michael Roberts. What makes this achievement even more commendable is that Lyle achieved the record of 285 wins in just 3 short years, whereas Roberts and Lerena had both served almost their full 5-year apprenticeship. His achievements were celebrated at the 2018 Equus Awards hosted at Emperors Palace on 14 August where he walked away with the titles of SA Champion Jockey and SA Champion Apprentice as well as a special achievement award for achieving that feat. The Equestrian Life SA team caught up with Lyle shortly after the awards to find out more: Apart from talent, what do you attribute your success to? Hard work, dedication & passion. What are your main career goals? To ride feature race winners around the world. Do you have a favourite horse or one that is special /memorable thus far in your career? I love every horse that I get the privilege to ride, but I fell in love with a horse called Africa Rising since the first day I sat on him. He is super talented, yet the most laid back and easiest ride. He’s the ultimate professional and tries hard. Everything about his demeanor makes him so likable.  What is the hardest part of your job as a jockey? The hard part is the heaps of traveling on a day to day basis, and

Equestrian LIFE - Oct-Dec 2018

of course for many of us, watching our weight and constant weight reduction to get down to certain riding weights. For any of our readers who have never been to or experienced horse racing, why would you recommend they attend at least one feature race day? I think it is important so that they can experience the presence of these amazing thoroughbreds in a competitive environment. Every race brings excitement, adrenaline and thrill to every race goer. It’s a sociable event, and there quite simply is nothing like it to be compared to. A must for everyone! Best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? My dad once told me that, when riding a race, rather ride the horse as if you want him/her to be running on into the places - this way you won’t have “the pressure” on you to win which helps limit mistakes & keeps you calm, and you will give the horse every chance to perform at its best (and hence more chance of winning). Lyle is active on social media and posts after every race meeting in the hope that the younger generation will find horse racing intriguing and approachable. There are often many negative associations with the sport and he hopes to dispel many of the myths by enabling people to reach out and talk to himself and his colleagues first hand.

BUSINESS

IT’S

STRICTLY BUSINESS Brand Management for Equestrian Start Ups

For many of us in the equestrian industry, we followed a passion – and decided to make a career of it. Whilst entrepreneurship always sounds aspirational, what many of us forget is that as small business owners we have to wear many hats (in our case, helmets) – accountant, marketer, IT department - many of which we aren’t trained or skilled in, in order to manage a brand. Until such time as the business is profitable enough to employ skilled staff, there are a few business basics to have in place for effective brand management. our business could be a product, a shop, a riding school, a club, a stallion, a brand you represent or even yourself as a service provider or professional athlete. Whilst the extent to which the following applies may vary, they are generally all relevant regardless of business size:

convert your vision into a visual representation. Be wary of creating overly ornate and detailed logos with too many colours and very fine font types– not only do they become difficult to embroider and print (depending what technique you’re using), but the costs generally increase as the number of colours do. Have a Presence Some business owners are social media averse in their personal capacity which often then results in a similar mentality business wise. Unfortunately, just because you’re not online doesn’t mean people aren’t talking about you – in the digital age, social media has become word-of-mouth, Google and a forum for dialogue all in one.

Create a Brand Identity Your brand identity incorporates all the visible elements that define your brands personality and distinguishes it in the minds of customers and from your competitors. It includes the name, logo, colours, symbols and fonts – all decisions which shouldn’t be taken lightly as Whilst many of us have a presence on mulfor most of us, the objective for our business tiple social media platforms – including the is longevity. majors such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn – it’s important to remember When designing your logo, it’s often wise to that fans will generally follow you on many, consult a strategic design agency who can if not all of them, so content creation becomes

key. Whilst the convenience of posting on one platform and having it share to all the others at the click of a button is tempting, the best way to keep followers interested is to provide them with meaningful, helpful and different content so they engage actively on all the platforms. Be Prepared For many of us, our business ideas came to us on a whim and we implemented them faster than we could put the basics in place. We generally also only become aware of it when opportunities arise further down the line, such as free advertising or show sponsorships, and it then becomes a race against the clock to formalise marketing elements before we miss the deadline. A few key items to have readily available: High resolution versions of your Logo in various formats (preferably vector format, PDF and jpeg) as well as a version that is reversed out depending if it is placed on a dark or light background

High resolution images of your products, property, stallion, shop or of yourself. Depending on how often you expect your brand or products to be advertised or featured, it may be worthwhile investing in a professional photo shoot to create an image bank for this purpose. Your Financials. Whilst we may speak for many when we say our accounting system consists of a shoe box full of till slips – it is actually fairly easy to keep up to date. Whether you have an accountant or if you file your tax returns yourself, it is far easier to maintain a basic Excel spreadsheet of income and expenses month by month than it is to sift through that shoe box at the end of the financial year and try to allocate expenses accordingly. Accounting software platforms, such as Freshbooks, are great tools for small business and basic packages, particularly if there is only one user, are fairly cost effective for the functionality they provide.

2018 Oct-Dec - Equestrian LIFE | 15

BUSINESS

Protect Yourself This is particularly relevant to those in the service industry, but also important for those in retail. Whilst we all try to ensure we operate at optimal efficiency and provide the highest standards of quality, there are times when things may go wrong, when suppliers let us down or genuine ‘Acts of God’ when the circumstances were beyond anyone’s control. A few options to consider: Consider Public Liability Insurance cover in the event you may be held liable for irreparable damage Draw up Terms & Conditions with a reputable lawyer and enforce that clients sign these to indemnify yourself in the event of an incident. Specify, with absolute clarity, your exchange and refund policies, payment policies and deadlines to avoid any confusion. Avoid any religious, sexist, racial or political debate on your business social media content – whilst you’re quite entitled to an opinion, so is everyone else – we may not choose to share the same beliefs but we can choose to respect them. It can be argued that the above are all items which businesses can do themselves in-house ‘at no cost’ – but what we forget is the amount of time it will take us, as individuals (especially if we’re not skilled and efficient in that particular department) – time which could have been income generating if we’d focused on our core competencies instead. Support fellow small businesses who have specialised in certain skill sets and always ask the question if they’ll consider trade exchanges or payment plans if cash flow isn’t looking as positive in the short term.

Who To Follow on Instagram

This issue we’re taking a look at Instagram profiles of a different kind - these belong to four legged Insta-stars who are either famous themselves or have famous owners

Who: Troy the Horse (@troythehorse) Where: South Africa Why we love it:

Whilst many of us have already given ourselves Groupie status when it comes to South African musician, Jeremy Loops, there is even more good reason to love this homegrown talent. Jeremy loops traded a guitar for a horse he fell in love with on a farm in Kommetjie in the Western Cape and has subsequently created an Instagram account dedicated solely to his four-legged companion. Follow Troy the Horse and watch his adventures on the beach, through the winelands and just generally adventuring through life with Jeremy Loops.

Who: Teddy the Shetland (@teddytheshetland) Where: United Kingdom Why we love it:

If you’re looking for a cuteness fix then this is the page to follow. According to his bio, Teddy is “an international heartbreaker who dabbles in modelling”, and his profile is a series of ridiculously cute shots of Teddy sporting different outfits, making appearances and getting up to all sorts of antics. The 2-year old miniature Shetland suffered a bit of a health scare earlier this year but is back to full health and continuing on his quest to fill the world with smiles and happiness on a daily basis.

Who: Doug the Pug (@itsdougthepug) Where: Everywhere! Why we love it:

If you’re all “horsed-out” and looking for some canine cuteness on Instagram then follow Doug the Pug. With a travel bucket list longer than any of ours, a more comprehensive wardrobe than Paris Hilton and a lifestyle we should all be envious of, Doug the Pug is a small dog with a big personality (and an even bigger appetite). Follow Doug for a dogs-eye-view of the world as he travels with his human family and embraces different cultures and all the sights and sounds of the world. So famous has this little dog become that he even has his own plush toy replica which you can purchase via his bio.

A FRESH APPROACH Mjolnir Equestrian Estate and Riding Academy

It often takes a fresh perspective to consider things differently and that is exactly how Abdus Samad Bulbulia (Sammy), new owner and manager of Mjolnir Equestrian Estate and riding Academy, sees the future of livery in South Africa. he stable yard, located in Elandsdrift near Lanseria, is every horse owner’s dream – equipped with 40 stables, 30 large grass paddocks, three large sand arenas plus a solarium and a horse walker– but the real difference is the holistic approach to horse care which Sammy believes forms the foundation of successful horse and rider partnerships.

Mjolnir’s value proposition is two fold – convenience for owners and riders and holistic care for horses – resulting in an exclusive haven for those who genuinely enjoy horses and seek an enriched equestrian lifestyle. With a background in sport and a keen interest in horses, Sammy also runs an Arabian stud farm, Al-Uhud Arabians, from the same premises. PHOTOGRAPHY PHILLIP SANTOS

His vision is to create the equivalent of a Country Club at Mjolnir – a sanctuary where both horse and rider receive the highest standard of service and care. The estate, which is already functional and lessons provided under the instruction of Open rider, Carina Lingerfelder, officially launched in September of 2018 with member facilities that will include locker rooms, laundry service, floodlit arenas, a fully-equipped clubhouse and horse care management that extends beyond the basics. Apart from the usual inclusions, livery fees at Mjolnir will also include dentistry, farrierwork, clipping, unlimited use of the solarium and horse walker, tack cleaning & polishing, CCTV cameras in every stable for owners to view individually plus show turnout and transport to mention but a few. This minimises horse care responsibilities for owners and riders who may have work commitments and time constraints, but ensures all horses receive the same level of care.

The art of WESTERN RIDING IN SOUTH AFRICA

When most of us hear the term Western Riding, the first thing that comes to mind is barrel racing and roping cattle. Considering our only real reference points to date are old school movies and the occasional live rodeo coverage courtesy of ESPN – who can blame us right? Needless to say, Western Riding is a discipline bubbling under the equestrian radar all around South Africa and with a Youth Team who recently represented our country in Texas (the home of Western Riding) and came home with multiple medals and awards, it’s clear we should all be taking notice.

he SA Quarter Horse Association (SAQHA) Convention, which is the equivalent of ‘Nationals’ for the sport, took place from 9 – 12 August at the Afridome in Parys. The Equestrian Life SA team ventured out to meet the Youth team and on arrival we were greeted with riders of all ages dressed in leather chaps, Stetsons and crystal-emblazoned collared shirts that sparkled in the sun. There is a strong sense of culture, tradition and pride within the Western community and the passion and commitment amongst riders and their supporters is palpable. As someone who has ridden and competed in the Equestrian Industry for more than 25 years (mainly showjumping and eventing and with a family history in horse racing) I like to believe I had a fairly comprehensive knowledge of most disciplines – but I have to be honest and admit I was completely ignorant when it came to Western. The opportunity to channel my inner cowgirl was appealing and I’ve always envied their ornate saddles – which look far more comfortable than our streamlined English counterpart – but my clichéd perception was quickly put to rest. Western riding is an art. Horse and rider perform tasks and movements with such subtlety and skill that it’s mesmerizing to watch.

the members of the SA Team that competed at the 2018 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Youth World Cup in Texas, Tamryn Thorp, Aronë van der Merwe, Lara Colyn, Ranae Lindeque and Anro van der Merwe, to find out more about the discipline and the World Cup:

ter on the trail – including opening and closing gates, walking over a bridge, backing through poles or navigating floor poles to demonstrate responsiveness to rider aids. The intention is to test the horses’ ability to negotiate these obstacles safely, calmly and willingly.

What are the different classes one can compete in in Western Riding? I know most people think we lassoo sheep and cows for fun but that’s not what we do at all. They do that overseas but in South Africa this is strictly controlled and prohibited by the SPCA. There are a number of different classes that riders can enter such as:

Western Pleasure Western pleasure classes focus mainly on the horse and its ability to perform the required gaits – walk, jog (trot) and lope (canter) – in both directions, in a quiet and enjoyable manner. Riders want to demonstrate that the horse is a pleasure to ride – both in terms of gait quality and manners. Judges may also ask the horses to back up (reverse) which they should do quietly and calmly.

Reining This is the most popular as it’s the one Western discipline in which riders can be selected for the World Equestrian Games. Reining horses have to perform a set pattern with mandatory maneuvers which displays their responsiveness to and control by the rider. Elements include fast and slow circles left and right, flying or simple changes, two sliding stops with roll backs, sliding stop with a back up and 4 spins left and 4 spins right– all of which emphasize the horses’ responsiveness to the aids given by the rider.

Horsemanship As opposed to the pleasure class, Horsemanship focuses on the rider and their ability to sit on the horse in a balanced manner and control the horse effectively with subtle aids. Riders are given a pattern which tests the rider as they execute specific maneuvers on horseback. The rider is judged in this class, but a responsive horse who is well trained and can change gaits smoothly contributes to the presentation.

Tell us about your experience in Texas at Western Trail the AQHA Youth World Cup? In trail classes, horse and rider have to mimic It was such an honour to represent our counEquestrian Life SA caught up with a few of a series of obstacles which they would encoun- try – any competition is important to us, but

We were allocated horses of varying experience levels and had a few days to get to know each of their strengths and weaknesses during clinics with Western specialists before competing in the actual World Cup. It was amazing to be exposed to their training methods and we learnt so much that we’re able to come home and implement in our own training. When we compete in South Africa, if there are 10 riders in a class it’s considered well attended, so it was an eye opener to walk into the competition ring in Texas as one of 50 riders! Members of our team finished in the top 10 in 4 of the classes which was a great achievement. What do you wish people knew about Western Riding? There are many myths when it comes to Western riding that I’d love to dispel. Many say our bits are very harsh but what people fail to notice is that we ride with our reigns very

Equestrian LIFE - Oct-Dec 2018

loose – the basis of western is neck reigning and the use of leg pressure as opposed to using your hands. Young horses are started in bitless bridles, called Bosals, which are very easy on them and as they progress and get more experienced so we move to the stronger bits which makes them very responsive to very subtle commands from the rider. Likewise, many say the spurs we use are cruel but again, they’re intended to roll along the horses’ side as opposed to being kicked or jabbed with them so the intention is that the horse responds to a very subtle rider command. Both bits and spurs are checked and controlled by stewards at the shows so there are measures in place to ensure the animal welfare is always first and foremost. How can people find out more about Western Riding or find a school to learn? Almost every province in South Africa has a registered Western Riding Club that they can contact for information and details of Western instructors. The sport is still fairly small but the number of coaches and riding schools are increasing slowly and we hope that as more people find out about it, so it will grow and prosper. Reigning is one of the sports in which riders can qualify for the World Equestrian Games so for anyone with ambitions of competing on the international circuit, this could be the discipline that gets you there!

to be able to ride in Texas, which everyone knows is the capital of Western Riding worldwide was just on another level. We were one of the less experienced of the 19 nations that competed, but we received amazing feedback from the judges and clinicians that we far exceeded their expectations and managed to come home with a number of medals between us – which just proves that the standard of coaching in South Africa is of suitable standard to compete overseas.

Whilst we couldn’t have chosen a better, more rewarding sport to participate in that gives us time in the great outdoors – it does come with it’s downfalls - such as prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays from the sun. Whilst applying sunblock religiously before we ride is always recommended – we found some other UV protection products which horse riders should consider for added defense from sun damage:

RUDY PROJECT SUNGLASSES Much like our lips, our eyes are also often forgotten when it comes to sun protection. Originally a cycling brand, Rudy Project has introduced its Rydon ImpactX sunglasses to the horse riding industry as they are virtually unbreakable. he story of this Café is a heart-warming one… the café was preparing to close its doors permanently, a few days before Christmas, when a longtime customer got wind of what was happening and did the unthinkable. With absolutely no experience, the current owners bought the restaurant to save the jobs of those who worked there. With only rudimentary skills and a miniscule kitchen, the journey began… and Café Hemingway’s was born – a place bought for the people, by the people.

THE YEAR OF THE

UNICORN What dreams are made of!

2018 is, according to Chinese astrology, the year of the Dog – but we’ve decided that it should be declared the year of the Unicorn. Whilst most trends have a finite lifespan and are later replaced by the next best thing, these mythical creatures have long been the object of desire for little girls and have since exploded into an obsession for children and adults alike – with so end in sight for Unicorn mania. We took a look at some of the best unicorn trends from 2018 so far: Unicorn Photoshoots From cake smashes to dress up, parents look for creative ways to capture images of their children in an environment that is likely to elicit a smile of sheer joy from their little ones. So just imagine the smile when they meet a real life unicorn! Quickly becoming a hometown celebrity, Marshmallow, a Shetland pony owned by Pony Perfection in Johannesburg, has won the hearts of many as he moonlights as a Unicorn for photo shoots and children’s parties when he’s not teaching kids to ride at the riding school. EARNING THEIR KEEP Meet the “Carties” of the Western Cape

For many of us, horse riding is a hobby and a luxury – horses are primed for optimal performance with no expense spared on well-fitting tack, feed, nutritional supplements and regular vet, farrier and dentistry appointments to ensure our equine partners are kept in the best possible condition. A stark contrast to the life of working horses - who are ‘employed’ to pull carts and transport people and who, much like their owners, depend heavily on the outcome of their day’s work for their survival. hilst we can argue that horses being ridden recreationally and in competition do have jobs – to perform and compete – for the purposes of this article we’ll be focusing on those horses and donkeys on whom people rely for their livelihood.  The cart horse industry has a long heritage rooted in the era of District Six where horses and carts were used by hawkers to sell and exchange their goods. Business was lucrative and horses were well maintained – they were kept in communal stables and traveled short distances with light loads. The forced removals to the Cape Flats spelt disaster for cart horses and their owners alike. Located far from markets, hawking was no longer viable and community members turned to collecting scrap metal as an alternative source of income. This led to an increase in cart horse operators, renting of horses and carts and a generally mismanaged industry as they lacked the knowledge and means to properly care for and maintain working horses. The Cart Horse Protection Association (CHPA) was established in 1995 to provide essential services and education to cart horse owners to address the conditions in which cart horses lived and worked. We caught up with Marike from CHPA to find out more:

36 |

Equestrian LIFE - Oct-Dec 2018

Can you guide us through an average day at the CHPA? We start at 8am - owners and drivers bring their horses to the clinic in Epping to be shod by one of our three farriers. While they are here, the horses, carts and their harnesses are inspected and if anything is found lacking, there is a harness repair station and a cart workshop on the premises for repairs. Repair services are free of charge and farriery is heavily subsidised. If a horse is not deemed in good enough condition to work, horses will not be shod (unless it is a case where horses are reliant on remedial shoeing). The owner / driver will be given a letter indicating for how long the horse is booked off work. “Carties” as they are fondly known, can also buy subsidised feed – we sell oat hay as well as 10% concentrates. The Clinic in Epping closes at 12:30 and then the farriers go to outlying areas that are too far for horses to come to Epping. What do you do for the cart horses and owners and how do they join the Association? Our Equine Welfare Practitioners are qualified inspectors and Animal Welfare Assistants. They are able to administer minor veterinary treatments and work according to the Animal Protection Act to ensure the welfare of all working horses. They do home visits where

2018 Oct-Dec - Equestrian LIFE | 37

the living conditions of the horses are inspected and continually engage with owners to educate and improve these living conditions. Our services are only given to registered working horses. We do not register any “New” horses and only a foal born to a registered mare can be newly registered to work. Even then, they may only start working once they have turned three years old. When an owner buys a registered horse, they have to let CHPA know that they are the new owner before they can make use of our subsidised services. Are there any laws to protect cart horses or what jurisdiction to you have to intervene in serious cases? In September 2010 the first step to the regulation of the carting industry was taken by the introduction of identification plates for the carts. The ID plate is affixed to the back of the cart and denotes the horses name and Cart Horse Protection Association unique registration number which is captured on a central database with all the horse and owners information. The ID plate

ensures that the cart operators who contravene the Animal Protection Act or traffic regulations can be easily identified and traced through our Information Management System. Training is also provided by the Inspectorate to City Law Enforcement Officers on how to detect abuse and inspect a horse and cart. The training also offers an opportunity for Inspectors and law enforcement to share information on challenges and problems faced on the road with cart horse operators and formulate solutions in partnership. We have a Patrol and Call-out Officer who has completed his Law Enforcement Training with the City and is able to issue official warnings and fines when cart horse operators transgress. What is the most gratifying part of your job? Every day I see beautifully looked after, fit horses that are as comfortable as possible in their work. We have a Recovery & Rehabilitation Centre in Gordon’s Bay where horses that are confiscated or signed over go to be taken care of. Once they have been rehabilitated, they are entered into an adoption programme and it is wonderful to see them

move into homes where they live out in grass paddocks and get to be “just horses”. What can the public do to help? Cart Horse Protection Association relies solely on public donations to fund the annual operational budget. We are always in need of donations. We have a number of promotional items for sale which can be viewed on our Facebook page (@CartHorseProtection). We rely heavily on the public to report any maltreatment of horses such as overloading of carts and abuse. We have an emergency number, 0826 599 599 that is manned 24/7 and we will always respond to calls. The public are our eyes and ears on the road as we unfortunately cannot be everywhere all the time. For anyone who would like more information or would like to contribute or fundraise towards the Cart Horse Protection Association and the amazing work they do, you can contact Marike at: Cart Horse Protection Association K www.carthorse.org.za k pr@carthorse.org.za E Cart Horse Protection Association (@CartHorseProtection)

24 Hours in the life of…

KELLY

O’CONNOR elly o’Connor was one of the only two double clear rounds in the 2018 SA Derby, and took victory by mere seconds from runnerup Nicola Sime-Riley. We managed to catch up with Kelly just days after the Derby to find out what an average Wednesday in the life our reigning champion looks like: 06h00 I wake up with my cat Eric biting my noise and meowing for food. I go downstairs to feed him, let my Chihuahuas outside and my German shepherds in. I then make a cup of coffee while my grooms feed all the horses and we check they are all ok. 07h15 I get ready for the day and hitch up the two birth horse box to take my horses for training at Cellehof Stud with Dominey Alexander. I usually have another cup of coffee and a chat with my fellow riders before jumping onto my first horse. 12h00 We usually train until 12h00 and then head back home and everyone has lunch and rests or I quickly run around grabbing necessary yard items usually from Builders Warehouse. 14h00 I usually ride the rest of the horses that didn’t go for training around the track on a Wednesday so they are ready for a jump the following day. 17h30 I make up the horses feed so it’s ready for 5:30pm feed time and then either head to Woolies to grab some dinner or get ready to join my friends or family for a meal. 22h00 When I get back home, usually at about 22h00 if I’ve been out, I do a last check on the horses and lock up the house making sure all the animals are tucked safely into bed and of course the Chihuahuas and cat snuggle up with me for the evening.

CANINES and COFFEE DATES A look at pet friendly restaurants around South Africa

For most Equestrians, a canine companion is the ultimate accessory! Always happy to see us no matter how dirty, sweaty or horse-scented we may be and our shoulder to cry on after a heart breaking lesson or round in the show ring. Many of us travel with our dogs - who look forward to an outing to stables and shows and generally anywhere their human goes – so why should they not join us for lunches, brunches and coffee dates too! We take a look at some restaurants around South Africa who welcome dogs and many of whom have even created menus especially for Fido and friends. AFRO-BOER (PRETORIA, GAUTENG) For an interesting menu filled African/Afrikaans inspired, traditional South African comfort food and Boerekos delights then Afro-Boer is the place to go. Set in gorgeous gardens filled with beautiful rose bushes, not only is it a tranquil place for a lazy lunch, but your four-legged children will equally appreciate the space. Dogs of all types are welcomed at Afro-Boer, provided they’re on a leash and well-mannered, and are often treated to meatballs and biscuits by the caring staff (with your permission of course). 1 Meerlust Avenue, Corner of Lynnwood Road and Meerlust Avenue, Die Wilgers, m 032 946 2546 E AfroBoer

Old Mill Drift

GUEST FARM Old Mill Drift Guest Farm is situated three and a half hours away from Johannesburg – between the towns of Clarens and Fouriesberg. With five chalets, four family lodges and large grounds suitable for camping and caravanning, not only is the self-catering, petfriendly lodge perfect for a family get away (including the four-legged fur children), but it is also adequately equipped for hosting functions – from weddings and retreats to mountain bike races and 4X4 excursions.

n our launch issue we profiled dog friendly accommodation options – and when we found out that Old Mill Drift Guest Farm was also a little-known Warmblood stud farm, we did the only thing that any dog-loving equestrian would do – we jumped in the car (dogs in tow) and headed to Clarens for the weekend. The 666-hectare farm is on the border of Lesotho, with a mere sand road separating the farm from the rolling Maluti mountains and the Basotho community who ride past and cheerfully greet you, their ponies and donkeys laden with maize and wood. Owner, Yvonne McCarthy, bought the farm (previously the largest trading post and working mill during the Boer War) three and a half years ago with plans to restore the farm to it’s former glory. Not only is she restoring the existing farm buildings to ensure the lodge

is equipped for events of all sizes, Yvonne also breeds Warmbloods and almost all the equine athletes on the farm descend from wellknown bloodlines including Jazz, Gribaldi and Lissabon, to mention but a few. The only equines without much to offer in terms of breeding caliber, are the 13 wild, feral ponies who have made themselves at home on the farm and who make their way up to the accommodation from time to time in search of treats – perfect company for an afternoon sundowner from your chalet patio. For many of us city slickers who are looking for a few simple requirements from a weekend away – a sky full of stars, miles of open land (a change from the urban jungle we reside in), minimal signal and a taste

of working farm life but with the comforts of home – then Old Mill Drift Guest Farm ticks the boxes. There are a vast range of activities available including hiking (for all ages and fitness levels), extensive 4x4 tracks (including an advance Level 5 course) as well as fishing and ample locations for picnics and bird watching. For those who are spiritually-inclined, the farm has also been declared the home of an Energy Vortex by three independent energy specialists. Amid the Poplar trees, the vortex is said to be an intersection of powerful and transformative natural electromagnetic earth energy. It also marks the start of a steep mountain hike to a waterfall (depending on the time of year) – but not steep enough to deter our two small rescue dogs (who are used to their creature comforts and strolls around a manicured golf course) who scampered up to the highest viewing point and the crossed narrow bridges and walkways with ease. Old Mill Drift Guest Farm makes you appreciate the freedom of open space, fresh air and genuine quality time with your canines who are free to participate in all activities along with you. You wont find a more hospitable hostess than Yvonne, who’s only requirement is that you depart your stay as in love with the farm as she is!

Things to Note: 1. The roads to the farm are accessible with an average passenger vehicle but can be affected by rain so be sure to check condition in advance. 2. Ensure you data roaming is turned off before you reach the farm to avoid any nasty surprises as some networks switch over to to roaming based on it’s close proximity to Lesotho 3. Old Mill Drift Guest Farm welcomes dogs, but bear in mind it is a working farm with horses, geese and other farm animals roaming freely who have right of way Old Mill Drift Guest Farm k yvonne@oldmilldrift.co.za K www.oldmilldrift.co.za m +27 83 310 9909 E Old Mill Drift Guest Farm (@oldmilldrift)

PROFILE

and I inherited that passion as well. I hold an honours degree in screen writing and directing and have performed in a number of professional stage productions and films. I have also directed a fair amount of film, television, music videos and corporates and have a completed TV series ready to be sold (please somebody buy it)! I am also a trained singer believe it or not! These days I'm really good at hanging out with my horses and my dogs! What is your career highlight to date? That's a tough question to answer as I don't really fit into a box. I guess my career has been diverse between riding horses, the film and television, the directing, the commentating as well as the acting and voice work. There have been some awards, some glamorous film locations, some late-night conversations and drunken charades with A-list film stars over a bottle of red and these to me are all highlights. My life has certainly been an adventure and I'm very lucky.

AIDAN LITHGOW Commentator, director, stage performer, ex-Tellytrack presenter, show jumper and all-round nice guy, Aidan Lithgow, is one of those individuals who has found success in a multitude of industries – but his heart remains firmly in the equestrian industry. Whilst his dream of becoming a jockey may not have materialised, we think he found his calling after all as the “voice” of showjumping in Johannesburg.

How did you get involved in the world of horses?  I come from a horsey family. My grandfather and mother were both racehorse trainers so I guess it was inevitable that I would end up making a career in horses. From as far back as I can remember, there have always been horses and I have always ridden. I grew up riding work before school and then riding my jumpers after

Equestrian LIFE - Oct-Dec 2018

The highlight of my commentating career has not been a particular show but rather a very special message sent to me by one of our young rider's mothers to say that my words during a show had had a positive impact on her son, and it made me realise that life is not about what you get out, but what you put in that matters. Most inspiring Equestrian you have met to date and why?  I was very fortunate to have spent a few months based at the Pessoa facility in Belgium and also travelled with them to the Sunshine Tour in Spain. Although I was only exercising horses, Nico took me under his wing and really taught me a lot. His approach to horses, his eye for a horse and his feel was incredible. He treated me as an equal, even though I was barely out of my teens and made me feel as though my opinion counted. Do you compete currently – if so, in what discipline and grade?  I do, although it is impossible to compete and commentate at the same shows. I have a 1.30m horse, a 1.25m thoroughbred, and two youngsters just starting off. My preferred discipline is show-jumping, although I do dabble in eventing from time to time but I can't call myself a true eventer as my liver simply won't cope with that crowd!

Looking back, what message would you give your 18-year old self?  school so yes, many hours spent in the saddle. Stay true, stay focused, stay loyal, humble and My ultimate dream was always to be a jockey balanced but above all, enjoy it. Life is there but that was never going to happen. to be lived, so soak it in.  Whenever you can, travel, meet people, converse, ask them how We know you are involved in production and their days has been and always be kind. commentating – are there any other hidden talents we don’t know about?  Best advice anyone has ever given you? Whilst my mom's side of the family was very Best equestrian advice…"take those draw reins horsey, my dad loved the world of stage and film and chuck ‘em in the field" (Nelson Pessoa)
