ED'S NOTE

Equestrian [ LIFE

ello and Welcome to the first issue of Equestrian Life SA! Putting this initial issue out on the shelves feels similar to what I imagine stepping into the arena to compete in the SA Derby for the first time, or lining up in the starting stalls as an apprentice jockey for your first race must feel like – completely nervewracking but an accomplishment all at the same time. As with any competitive equestrian sport, you never go to battle alone – you always have your equine team mate on your side, there are moments of sheer exhilaration and happiness, you’ll have a couple of disagreements along the way and momentary judgements of character but for the most part, no matter the challenges, you know without question there’s no other place you’d rather be than in that saddle. The proverbial saddle in this instance is this publication and my faithful steed the publishing team from Hello Magazine. So before we even get started on the content – a big thank you for the faith, the support and trusting the potential of this partnership.

the super talented Lexi Stais who is setting the global showjumping scene on fire. With recent news of her qualification for the World Equestrian Games we’ve escalated our interest to Groupie status and managed to track her down amid her busy show schedule to find out more. Our shopping section this issue takes a look at some of the winter essentials – as we all know winter is characterized by long boots and most styles, even those by top international designers, have been strongly influenced by Equestrian riding boots (#They’reWelcome). We take a look at riding helmets which have evolved from humble beginnings to becoming essential style elements for any show outfit. Let’s be honest ladies, we wear that helmet like a crown so why shouldn’t it be embellished with Swarovski Crystals right? No horse rider is complete without a canine sidekick and we made sure didn’t neglect them in this launch issue. We’ve browsed around and managed to find a number of pet friendly accommodation options so Fido can tag along on road trips to away shows.

We hope you enjoy our launch issue – a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into it - almost as much as is required to Diving into the content and with Wom- lunge a young thoroughbred, in a wind en’s month fast approaching us in Au- storm, right in the middle of a field of gust, our cover girl and article features excitable ponies #PointTaken.

Equestrian LIFE - July-Sept 2018

Lexi Stais has long been a household name amongst the South African Equestrian community and is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the international stage. Currently based in Germany, Lexi is flying the South African flag high as she competes, and excels, in shows across Germany and the rest of Europe. Competing on the international stage is not new for Lexi - she has represented South Africa in equestrian competitions since the age of 10 - including the World Equestrian Games and the Youth Olympics. With such great success at such a young age, it’s no wonder she caught the eye of German show jumper, Hilmar Meyer, who has long supported South African showjumping through the sponsorship of the local Young Rider Series.

The BEST is YET TO COME

Lexi now competes and produces young horses for Hilmar’s yard, based in Thedinghausen in Germany. She has competed throughout Germany as well as in Spain, Netherlands, Belgium and Albania and has many notable successes under her belt in a short space of time. We caught up with Lexi while in Uggerhalne, Denmark competing at the CSIO3* as part of Team South Africa.

2018 July-Sept - Equestrian LIFE | 11

How did you get into horse riding or when was your very first taste of the Equestrian World? I grew up in Beaulieu which is pretty much horsey country in Johannesburg -being surrounded by horses from the age of 3, it was inevitable that the riding bug would bite early. I come from an equestrian family – my dad, Panayiotis, evented and mom, Lynette, hacked on weekends, whilst my sister, Eleni, also competed successfully in all disciplines and represented South Africa in Vaulting at the World Equestrian Games in both 2006 and 2014. Without their unwavering support and dedication to the early morning lessons and show schedules I may not be in the fortunate position I find myself currently. It takes a lot of commitment and dedication but it’s absolutely worth it and I hope I can provide inspiration for many little girls who have big dreams that anything is possible if you’re prepared to work for it! You are now competing internationally - can you tell us a bit more about the yard and the horses you’re riding currently? Firstly the yard is my new home. I can spend hours in the stables without getting bored. We have 28 stables, 2 beautiful outdoor arenas, one (very small) indoor, a walker and 4 grass paddocks. I’m very lucky to have a great string of horses at the moment ranging from age 5 to 11. They are all very special and talented and I wouldn’t be able to choose a favourite - but I do owe a lot of thanks to Cuba, Quintano, Dynamit and Mandarina for all the success they have given me. Who are your role models / mentors? My riding career has seen a number of influential equestrian specialists imparting knowledge and skills, shaping me physically and emotionally for a career in an industry which has as many highs as it does humbling lows! I was first instructed by the late Eilika Larkins and thereafter Terry Franz and Nicole de Villiers. Yvonne Bolton instructed me as a child and throughout the ranks as a junior before joining Team Nissan and Lorette Knowles-Taylor in the Young Rider/Adult division. Top South African show jumper Dominey Alexander and Karen Keller also contributed tremendously to my career and success

12 |

Equestrian LIFE - July-Sept 2018

Currently, I would have to say my mentor is Hilmar Meyer because of the training I have had over the past 3 Years and all the success that has come with it. My role models are Jerome Dubbledam, Marcus Ehning and Meredith Michaels Beerbaum Best / most memorable horse riding moment to date? Winning the 1.55m Grand Prix in Elmloher on Cuba in July last year where I won my first car! I also received recognition from the German National Federation, being awarded the prestigious Goldenes Reitabzeichen (Golden Riding Badge) at the Verden International Show in August 2017. This is an award with very demanding qualifying criteria based on rider success in S-class tournaments (1.40m classes and higher) so I am very proud and honoured. What advice do you have for riders in the industry - female riders specifically? Girl power is everything!! I think it is very important to be strong and fit to stay at the top of your game. We have to support, empower and encourage each other - this sport is tough enough – when you’re in that show ring, we’re all giving our best with our eye on the same prize. I am honoured to be an ambassador for Equestrian Affair, owned by Lara Neill, a very successful show jumper and business woman herself – I’m incredibly grateful for her support and belief in me. What are your goals for the future? My biggest dream is to compete at the Olympic Games and to one day run a successful business in Germany. Any pre-show routines or lucky charms? I am very organised, I like to pack everything 3 days before we travel to away shows. I also have a lucky whip. What inspires you? Great horsemanship, hard work and talented young horses. When you have some time away from the horses, what do you do for fun/ to relax? WHEN I have a day off I like to visit Bremen or Hamburg to do a bit of shopping and have some “me time”.

What would your horse say about you if we asked for a reference? I think my horses would say that they trust me and that I help them believe in themselves. Best riding advice you’ve ever been given? The first thing Hilmar taught me was to have the horses in front of my leg. For the nonequestrians this means having uninterrupted impulsion – the horse maintains momentum without you having to consistently ask them. If there is one horse in the world (current or deceased) that you would love to ride / have ridden - who would it be? #HorseEnvy My #HorseEnvy has to be Eric Lamaze’s mare, Fine Lady. If fans at home want to follow your career or watch you compete, are there websites where international shows are live streamed? ‘Clip my horse’ is one of the biggest live streams around With her recent qualification for the World Equestrian Games, the Equestrian Life SA team look forward to watching Lexi’s career flourish and prosper as she continues to make South Africa proud on the international scene.

Equestrian LIFE - July-Sept 2018

For centuries, people have made use of horses and their muscle power to advance human development – for transport, during the wars and for recreational purposes. These days however, corporates and businesses are seeing the value of horses’ intuition as a tool to enable managers to master soft skills and become authentic leaders.

s Winston Churchill aptly said, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man”. Horses are natural facilitators in both leadership and followership – as herd animals they have an instinctive ability to determine team roles and maintain a disciplined ‘work’ ethic for mutual benefit. As flight animals they follow energy and intention more than words – honing in on non-verbal communication and emotional intelligence which they subconsciously mirror. This forms the basis behind Equine Facilitated Learning – by working with horses as facilitators, delegates are able to become aware of the non-verbal messages they are radiating – improving their ability to operate effectively within a team environment.

businesses before the formation of Equilibrium. This business experience, together with a strong passion for horses, has allowed us to create a unique business model that taps into both worlds. Where did your journey with equine-assisted leadership development begin? We have both worked in the traditional leadership development space and experienced a frustration with the limitations that lecture room based learning offers organisations: learning very often does not transfer into a visible change in behaviour and thinking back in the organisation. After being exposed to equine-facilitated learning over 10 years ago, Nikki started to experiment in this space. The Equilibrium approach has developed over time and has seen

Equilibrium, a coaching and development consultancy based in Johannesburg, led by Nadine Jackson, Nikki Lowe and Mpho Makwana, have developed the Equilibrium Equine Experience – an experiential approach using the engagement with horses to enable delegates to embark on a journey of self discovery and development. The method has proven successful amongst corporate companies of varying sizes giving individuals in a team - regardless of seniority, qualification, age or gender - powerful personal awareness with real time results, ensuring sustainability and lasting impact. Apart from building trust between team members, equine facilitated learning helps to develop the skills required to manage and navigate through uncomfortable, emotionally intense situations and move towards a state of effective conflict resolution and agreement more rapidly – essential skills for any business with culturally diverse teams. Equestrian Life SA caught up with Nadine and Nikki as they returned from presenting their first workshop in New York: Can you tell us a bit about yourselves – as individuals and business partners? We both have extensive business experience in the corporate world - holding senior leadership positions in various organisations locally and internationally. We also have both run our own

sonal mastery coaching from the Equilibrium facilitators, creates an experiential process that challenges individuals to consider the impact they create with others back in the workplace, as well as in their personal lives. Why do you think it has seen such success amongst your clients? Our approach with our clients is one of co-creation. We spend an extensive amount of time, getting to know our clients and the frustrations and challenges they are experiencing. We then design a bespoke experience that focuses on their specific leadership development needs. We have seen significant changes in thinking and behaviour within individuals and teams. This sustainable impact can be seen in the long-term partnerships we hold with organisations: we have just recently celebrated the tenth delivery of a leadership programme with one of our longeststanding clients. Are all horses suitable for use as a facilitator or how do you choose? We specifically select a variety of horses that will challenge individuals and teams. Because horses reflect the diversity of people in terms of gender, personality and age, this allows us coach the individuals on our programmes to consider how such inter-personal dynamics impact their ability to build collaborative relations with others.

considerable success in our long-term partnerships that have been created with organisations that are serious about leadership development. In May 2017, Mpho Makwana joined the business as a majority shareholder, and under his strategic guidance, we are developing an approach that incorporates the rich African cultural heritage into our methodology. What are the basic principles behind this type of development training? The Equilibrium approach provides individuals with an opportunity to practice, in real time, the skills needed to be an effective leader in today’s demanding world. The horses provide honest, in-the-moment feedback to the individuals. This feedback, coupled with intense business and per-

You were recently overseas – can you tell us a bit about your international experiences? Following the success of our national delivery with a global organisation, our client wanted all of the delegates attending their global leadership development programme to participate in the unique Equilibrium experience. Part of their design thinking was to create a common leadership message across their organisation, and so they partnered with us on the delivery of their leadership programmes. This is an exciting opportunity for us as we will be presenting in 5 international locations: we have already completed the workshop in New York, and will be shortly be working in Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Dubai and India.

2018 July-Sept - Equestrian LIFE | 15

How long does it take, on average, for people to become aware of themselves and their non verbal communication? Each individual is different. The process is specific to an individual’s ‘readiness’ for learning and change. Our coaching approach speaks specifically to each individual: everyone receives ‘one-on-one’ personal coaching feedback. Because of this, we work with a large team of Equilibrium facilitators ensuring that all of our clients receive a personalized-approach on the day. What are your long term plans for Equilibrium? This is an easy question for both of us. The key thing that inspires us in this business is the feedback we receive from our clients. At the end of each day, when we listen to delegates give feedback on their personal mastery journey, it reminds us of the impact that we create. The Equilibrium experience asks delegates to consider their approach to “living and leading”. It is inspiring to listen to the impact of the experience and how it moulds an individual’s approach to leading others in their personal and professional lives. We want to be able to expand this level of impact and so are exploring ways in which to extend our national footprint. Why would you recommend corporates try equine assisted leadership development as an alternative to the traditional approaches? If an organisation is looking for sustained, meaningful, leadership change, the Equilibrium approach is something that they should consider. IT’S Not PERSONAL The Importance of Public Liability Cover in the Equestrian Industry

orses are unpredictable. No explanation required there – even those blessed with calm, levelheaded equines will attest to the fact the the “flight” reaction is firmly engrained in all horses’ genetics. We’ve all heard the frantic shouts as horses run loose in the parking lot at shows, lead rein swaying in the wind as they run from “imminent danger” (insert flapping plastic bag) or simply in defiance of being loaded into the trailer to go home. We also know it’s incredibly difficult to reason with a horse pumped high on adrenalin – so any people, property or ponies in their path are at risk and whilst most accidents are just that – accidental - by damaging third party property or injuring a third party, you, as the owner of the horse causing the damage, could become liable for the costs to replace or repair any damage. Public liability cover is like having a lifejacket on a plane - it’s the sort of thing you will probably (hopefully) never need to use, but if you do, you’ll be very thankful it’s there. Essentially, it is protection against someone in the event of someone suing you, in your personal capacity, for damage, injury, death or financial loss caused by you or something you are responsible for. Liability in the equine industry can be viewed as public or commercial and equine-specific insurance companies have developed different solutions to ensure optimal cover in both instances.

For those who make a living within the industry – such as riding school owners and instructors – there is commercial risk cover which can be bought to protect the business as a whole. This covers all activities of the business including teaching, training, shows as well as any liabilities arising around the yard which again could include damage, injury, death or financial loss. All stable yard managers and owners can take additional proactive precautions to protect themselves and their livelihoods in the event of an incident or claims by third parties. Consider asking all riders to complete a Waiver of Liability form when signing up for lessons. Whilst it is not always enforceable, it is beneficial for protecting the owner against claims provided it is well drafted and outlines what third parties may be exposed to and that they agree to accept the risk. Erect a Disclaimer sign in a visible place at the entrance to your stable yard outlining the waiver of liability by the yard owner/manager against

Equestrian LIFE - July-Sept 2018

any third parties who choose to enter the premises. Again, whilst this alone may not be sufficient protection in a court of law it does add clout to your defence that the waiver of liability was communicated, even in your absence.

Ensure you bring sufficient grooms/ handlers to manage the number of horses on-site.

Ensure all potential risks to property, employees, horses under your care and riders are considered and reasonable precautions have been taken to minimize the risk and/or ensure swift reaction and resolution in the event of an occurrence, for example:

As spectators and fellow equestrians, make provision for horses – park responsibly so you’re not too close to horses being loaded/ unloaded, keep noise to a minimum and drive slowly. Let’s all pledge to be responsible, thoughtful and compassionate equestrians – accidents happen but it could so easily happen to any of us in the same situation.

Ensure sufficient fire extinguishers are available within the stable yard and keep them in accessible locations. Ensure contracts between yard managers and livery clients outline, with absolute clarity, what each parties responsibilities include and exclude to avoid any discrepancies in the event of an incident. Ensure all gates and fences are well maintained, not only for security purposes, but to prevent injury or death of horses or riders as a result of protruding wires, broken hinges or horses escaping. When taking horses to shows or other venues, ensure all reasonable effort is taken to prevent horses from escaping or causing damage Adhere to the tail ribbon system (red for horses prone to kicking, blue for stallions and green to indicate youth/inexperience)

You can take all possible precautions and luck can still be against you, so it is a good idea to protect yourself with an insurance policy from an authorised provider. Public liability cover for horse owners is critical - accidents and damage can occur at any point without it being anyone’s direct fault – other than your precious Snow Flake who decided that the prized import alongside her was in her personal space and a swift kick to the knee was warranted. This is public liability and the more common claim – particularly at shows– and can be covered by taking out a general liability policy for each horse owned.

THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR RIDING… “Forget glass slippers, this Princess wears boots.”

hilst many of us may have received judgement as children walking through busy malls in our muddy riding boots, little did we know we were inspiring some of the world’s greatest designers to create fashionable winter boots with an equestrian influence.

Best paired with skinny jeans or tights and chunky knit jerseys or puffer jackets and coats, the Rider boot is equally fashionable with knee length dresses and skirts – making it a versatile additional to the wardrobe. As we continue through a chilly South African winter, complete with snow and cold fronts, EL browsed some of our favourite online stores and retailers to find this season’s Rider Boot selection. Both fashionable and functional, rider boots are available in a price range to suit every pocket.

Commonly referred to as the “Rider Boot”, they were designed to mimic the functionality of traditional horse riding boots - knee high length to protect the leg, with a sturdy sole for traction and a slight heel, traditionally to prevent riders’ feet from sliding out the stirrups. With celebrities and many of the Royals, such as the Dutchess of Cambridge, sporting this look from as far back as 2004, rider boots have been on trend of many a season and don’t look to be fading in popularity any time soon.

TECHNOLOGY

Put Your BEST HOOF FORWARD The use of Connected Technology in Equestrian Sport

ajority of sports are by nature competitive, with athletes always looking for ways to improve their fitness, style and overall ability in their desire to be the best. The use of the technology has almost always had a positive influence on athlete performance - and now, thanks to French company, Seaver, these benefits can be used for equestrian athletes as well. Much like many of us, who have become fairly reliant on connected devices, like Garmin, to provide us with real time statistics such as distance, speed, elevation, average heart rate and recovery time (even if it’s just for the purpose of scoring those much-needed medical aid points), the Seaver device offers riders, trainers and veterinary professionals the equivalent information, and much more, on their equine team mates. Nova Vida Equestrian, based in Middelburg, founded by top South African show jumper Neriské Prinsloo together with friend and business partner Thiesa Janse van Rensburg, is a proud local distributor of the connected girth technology. Whilst the device is used predominantly for training, it has been approved for use by the FEI in various disciplines including the cross country element of the CIC*** of Berticheres in June of this year. Equestrian Life SA caught up with Neriské to find out more:

sessions and during recovery) which enable you to determine illness, anxiety, poor fitness etc with any variations. The recovery time, or the time the horse takes to get back to a lower heart rate of around 80 bpm, indicates the fitness level of the horse. Flat Work The flat work data from the ride will indicate: Cadence The cadence data is used to evaluate the rhythm and regularity of your horse during the session and at each gait and lead. The cadence of the horse is the number of strides taken per minute at a given gait. Symmetry Symmetry data helps to compare your horse’s diagonal pairs at the trot in a straight line, and be able to detect potential anomalies and lameness. Time Spent at Each Pace We all know that there is no ideal distribution of working time at each gait. It depends on various factors such as the physical condition of your horse or the objective you set for your session. The workload curve allows you to see the gaits in function of time throughout the session and have a better idea of the intensity level of your training session.

1. Apart from performance stats (heart rate, calories burnt, distance etc) – what other useful information can the Seaver device provide riders and trainers that usually wouldn’t be measurable?

Time Spent on Each Rein We often tend to spend more time on one particular rein. By giving you a breakdown of the time spent at each lead, Seaver allows you to have a better-balanced training at each lead, which will then contribute to your horse’s good muscular balance.

Physical Condition With the Seaver we can assess the physical condition of your horse with scientifically precise heart rate, calories burned, intensity intervals and over-training range. As with human athletes, you start to see patterns in heart rate (before warming-up, during hard

Jumping The total number of fences jumped as well as their average and maximum height are measured in order to analyse your jump sessions. You will also have access to the angle of your horse’s jump, i.e. the tilt angle of the girth during takeoff, when the horse pushes off his hind legs.

3. How easy is the device to attach and use? The device is very easy to attach to any girth. Our girth sleeve comes in one size, is designed to fit on to any shape and brand of girth and is water and shock resistant. It’s easily rechargeable using a USB connector from a wall outlet or USB port. The Seaver app is free and available for download on the Apple Store for iPhone iOS devices, and Google Play Store for Android devices and connects easily via bluetooth. More than one rider can register on the app and each rider can load the profile of an unlimited number of horses using the meauring tape and instructions provided. 4. What other factors should riders take into consideration when assessing the results? The required measurements to create a horse in the application are essential for the algorithms used. If they are not properly taken

28 |

Equestrian LIFE - July-Sept 2018

and recorded in the app, or if you choose to keep the preset settings of the application when you create your horse’s profile, the results provided by the algorithm might be distorted. The age and sex of a horse will influence the average and maximum heart rate of a horse (just as in humans) and should be entered correctly. Riding conditions (ie heat waves), horse’s medical history (any conditions which may affect heart rate or symmetry), activity history (possible fatigue if been competing frequently) should all be taken into account when assessing the results. 5. In your opinion, do you believe this device would give riders using the device during competition an unfair advantage? No, it cannot give you an unfair advantage using it during competition. Performance training is very subjective, based on the instinct and experience of the breeder, coach or rider as there is a general lack of precise metrics and scientific approach. The same goes for the horse’s fitness: constant monitoring and injury prevention issues are becoming more and more important for passionate riders. With our technology, we want to enhance traditional training methods for equestrian sports – attentive riders, coaches and breeders will be able to introduce technology and precise metrics when preparing their training and competitions, all while taking care of their horse’s health.

2. From the times you’ve ridden with the device, what has been the most eye-opening realisations so far? I think the greatest revelations have been twofold: (i) The ability to analyse and monitor my horse’s fitness that enables me to work out a proper training plan and avoid injuries (ii) Using the height and angle of the horse’s jump provides a good indication on the energy required by the horse to rise and jump the fence as well as to understand my horses' jumping habits and capacities.

AN OPEN LETTER TO YOUNG

EQUESTRIANS…

have been a top level dressage rider and coach for over a decade. In that time I have won national and provincial championships, travelled the world with horses, coached pupils in provincial teams in various disciplines, completed several equine based qualifications with distinction, and written for many publications. This is not to brag, because I have also been run away with in a prize giving parade, broken several bones, got lost in the middle of a dressage test, forgotten my boots at home on show day, fallen off in a parking lot (that was quite recent), had my coach throw a book at me because I was about to ride over her, and on one memorable occasion I was asked to leave the championship arena because my horse was so badly behaved. cessful horses were not the “best” nor the most expensive - they were just average ones with great attitudes and excellent work ethic. The same applies to people – effort and enthusiasm is better to work with than just raw talent. 5. Be a good leader, but a better partner. SADDLING UP for Success Equestrian Women in Business

omen’s Day - celebrated in South Africa annually on 9 August, recognises women for their achievements – whether social, economic, cultural or political – as well as highlights a call to action for accelerated gender equality. Many South African equestrian athletes are women – and apart from training and remaining at the top of their game physically and mentally, many of these women are also wives, mothers and business women. We salute the ladies who trade their gumboots for high heels, helmet hair for high ponies and leather chaps for laptops as they transition from Equestrian to Businesswoman with Superwoman-like ease:

What was your dream job as a child and why? Nursery School Teacher – so I could have fun with kids all day! Tell us About Your Career / Business: I started The Digital Law Company five years ago. We specialise in educating and advising corporates, employees, schools, parents, teachers, and universities on the legal, disciplinary and reputational risks of social media. My areas of expertise include managing the legal consequences of using social media. My work involves creating social media strategies and policies for corporates and schools and providing training and workshops on social media law. I was an anchor for The Oscar Pistorius Trial, where I discussed social media, the law and court proceedings. I was retained as a legal commentator for the BBC for closing argument, verdict and sentencing of the trial. I am also the co-author of Don't Film Yourself Having Sex... And Other Legal Advice for The Age of Social Media, published by Penguin Random House in September 2014. My second book, Selfies, Sexts and Smartphones: A Teenager’s Online Survival Guide was published by Penguin Random House in October 2017.

What advice would you give to young women who want to compete professionally and succeed in Business? You don’t have to ride at the top level to enjoy it! I used to take riding very seriously, but I’ve had to be conscious about it becoming my recreation. How do you achieve work-life balance? It’s impossible. I either make enough money to pay for my horses or I have enough time to ride them. For now, my business comes first. I have to make hay while the sun shines. Life is always about sacrifice How do you feel Equestrianism has helped your career / work ethic? My job can be very stressful. Social media is very instant so when things go wrong they need fixing straight away. Riding for me has become very recreational. It’s my time out - with no cellphones, no social media, no hysterical clients. I usually fly a few days a week to give talks all over the continent, so riding for me is grounding. Tell us About Your Career / Business: After finishing a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree at UCT, I decided I needed a job where I could be my own boss, have relatively flexi hours so that I could still ride my horses and I wanted to do something I loved. I had 3 horses at that time and for the first time had to work and pay for myself. I suddenly realized that everything horse related was pretty expensive and the cheaper items were not great quality. I saw a gap in the market and with the help and some backing from my very supportive parents I decided that I wanted to bring in and ultimately create a South African Brand of Equestrian products that were really good quality but still affordable. Every EA item in our shops are designed and tested by ourselves with input from riders and our ambassadors. What advice would you give to young women who want to compete professionally and succeed in Business? It’s all possible, sometimes you may need to compromise a little or wake up a little earlier but it’s so worth it. Sometimes starting out in business you may need to miss a show here or there but once you are up and running and you have a steady income you will then reap the rewards of your initial sacrifice. Being in business enables you to be independent which is invigorating, but in order to balance it all, it’s important to have a support structure in place. How do you achieve work-life balance? I must admit I do live in a bit of chaos, and I am very often late, but I am learning to say no to things that I want to do but just cannot fit in. I am blessed with a wonderfully supportive husband, family and have a fantastic team of staff at Equestrian Affair who I delegate many tasks to now. My mum oversees our Cape Town branch and has the most incredible eye for design which has influenced me hugely. How do you feel Equestrianism has helped your career / work ethic? There is nothing in life like equestrianism! We experience such highs and such lows, we develop such indescribable relationships with our teammates (horses) and we are not only responsible for our own wellbeing but that of another animal too, which is a huge responsibility. The trust they put in us is incredible and to feel a horse fight for a win or clear round in the arena with it’s rider is something very special. I think being an equestrian has helped my career as on top of learning about responsibility and passion we all learn very early to “let it go” and if something happens you can’t dwell on it you need to focus on the “next jump/next obstacle” in life. What motto or quote do you live by? If you never try you will never know k www.equestrianaffair.co.za Q @laraneillequestrianaffair / @equestrian_affair E Equestrian Affair Johannesburg (@EAJHB) Equestrian Affair Cape Town (@EquestrianAffair)

orse riders and their hounds go together like gin and tonic – apart from the loyal companionship that canines provide, they’re also the most comforting, and least judgmental, during a postdisastrous-show vent. Missing a turn that cost you the podium finish by mere seconds, a slight misjudgment on distance that cost you a rail or overshooting X on a halt and costing precious points from the judge are all reasons for celebration to a dog – because let’s be honest, no matter what you do, right or wrong, in their eyes you’re still the bees knees! As a reward for the countless hours of moral support, we feel it’s only fair that our canine companions get to join us on family holidays and road trips – but not all establishments feel the same way. Equestrian LIFE - July-Sept 2018

Karkloof, in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands, has long been renowned as an equestrian haven with it’s rolling hills and scenic plantations – a proverbial heaven for hackers (the equestrian type). Whilst many a horse rider has descended on Karkloof at some point in their riding careers for either a show jumping, eventing or even polo tournament, it is also an ideal spot for a romantic weekend away.

long the winding, misty roads of the Midlands Meander lies a majestic sanctuary – Karkloof Safari Villas and Spa. Showing off with it’s mountainous backdrops and evergreen scenery, it’s difficult not to feel instantly relaxed and serene. With sixteen private villas, each uniquely decorated, linked to the main lodge via wooden walkways hidden amongst the trees and an estimated 93 butterfly species fluttering throughout the forest– it’s fair to describe the five star lodge as enchanting. The owner, Colleen Glaeser, started off in the telecommunications industry and moved into security and surveillance when she saw the need for intelligent, tailor-made surveillance solutions in Southern Africa. She met with the global president of AxxonSoft and realized it was the match she was looking for. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, AxxonSoft Southern Africa is considered one of the top security and surveillance companies in the region. So, imagine her delight when she merely visited the reserve for surveillance purposes and ended up owning a once in-a-lifetime property – all we can say is #LifeGoals! It’s no wonder this location has such an illustrious reputation; it is the most striking, luscious landscape – almost 3000 hectares in size! With views that will take your breath away, it’s no wonder that nearly 300 bird species reside here, allowing you to wake up to the songs of the trumpeter hornbill, and fall asleep to the reverberations of the waterfall. Each villa is in the middle of the forest, with doors and shutters that open fully, allowing you to feel at one with nature and enjoy complete solitude and unlimited exclusivity.

ROSE LEWIS. CHRIS ALLAN PHOTOGRAPHY.

This wilderness sanctuary, whilst also an ideal venue for weddings, special occasions and corporate functions, has become a renowned retreat for busy travelers seeking peace and tranquility. With yoga, meditation and hydrotherapy on the menu at the Karkloof Safari Spa, one can expect to leave a weekend at the lodge feeling rejuvenated and invigorated. There are also a vast range of activities available at Karkloof Safari Villas including game drives, romantic picnics, bush braais, bike riding, bird watching, guided walks, hikes to the Karkloof Waterfall and fishing at Albert Falls. They have flourishing giraffe, rhino, buffalo and leopard in the reserve, so this lodge ticks multiple weekend wishlist boxes. Various packages are on offer to guests - each carefully created to offer all guests a spectacular and bespoke experience. PROFILE

At what point did you know you wanted to make a career out of riding horses? I started riding horses at the age of 10, but I think I knew from when I was 12 years old that this was all I wanted to do! I am a SANEF level 1 and 2 qualified instructor and I qualified as a FEI level 1 coach in 2009. We have a qualified team of instructors at Farnham enabling riders of all levels to enjoy lessons across a variety of disciplines. What is your career highlight to date? I have competed in the South African Derby – which is a momentous occasion for any rider, but my highlight to date is coming 2nd and 3rd in the PE World Cup Qualifier on Toko and Chin Chin. I also won the 6-Bar challenge on Toko in 2014 clearing 1.78m! Take us through an average day in your life? I usually get woken up at around 5am by my daughter, Layah, and proceed to play and eat breakfast until around 6h30. I then teach or ride until around 10h30 (barring a quick gap to drop Layah at school at 07h30). After a quick catch up on admin, I fetch her at 12h00 and then continue with admin while she sleeps. I instruct from 2pm until 5pm followed by dinner, bath and bed for Layah and I then continue with admin till I can’t function any longer ;) What do you think is the best lesson children learn through riding horses? Patience, discipline and hard work! Looking back, what message would you give your 18-year old self? Try to have more balance in life! What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? The best life lesson I was taught is that there is a solution for everything in life – except for death. When it comes to horses - riding goes in waves, it’s important to remember that when things are tough you have to keep your chin up and keep fighting. When they’re good - enjoy the ride! Have you got anything on your riding bucket list? I would love to compete in a Nations Cup one day if funds allow me to. Farnham Riding School 228 Galanthus Road, cnr. TAMAR GLIKSMAN

There is an age-old saying that “dynamite comes in small packages” and that rings true when you meet open showjumper and owner of Farnham Riding School, Tamar Gliksman. Having known since childhood that horses and coaching were her calling, Tamar – herself coached and advised by top South African showjumper, Barry Taylor – started Farnham Riding School with the intention of providing top quality instruction, in a variety of disciplines, to riders with competitive aspirations.
