Festive Season
H
ELLO JOBURGERS!
Paging through the Hello Festive Season Magazine for 2013 made me very proud. It wasn’t just the delicious recipes or the innovative gifting ideas - that was just the cherry on top. For me it was the gorgeous photographs of our beautiful country, it was the pride I felt in our cities and destinations around South Africa and how far we have all come as a nation! I just love the spirit of our people and the diverse cultures. I have always wanted to capture that very life force in our annual Festive Season guide to share with the rest of South African. As you page through the magazine, you will notice that the international restaurant chain, Hard Rock Café will be launching in Joburg this Festive Season. Hard Rock Café is perfectly suited for the lively attitude of the Festive Season and is an ideal venue to host your year-end celebrations. I don’t know about you but I also cannot wait to attempt the festive recipe of sweet, fragrant Christmas bread; which would pair greatly with a smooth glass of Bunnahabhain Single Malt Whiskey.

Festive Season
Advertorial: Summer savings: preparing to go on holiday
When preparing for holiday... ‘less is more’ Switching off, and using less electricity when you are away from home, could mean more money in your pocket... to afford that extra bit of holiday fun for you and your family.
How do you do this? Think smart Adopt a few simple energy saving habits when you pack your bags. And remember to maintain it when you get back home... l
l
l
Unplug all appliances such as computers, coffee machines, television sets and entertainment consoles. Fix leaky taps; allowing water, especially hot water, to drip down the drain wastes both water and electricity. Replace conventional outdoor lights with motion-sensor lamps for security; they use less electricity because they only activate when the sensor is triggered.
l
Switch to solar powered garden lights; they use the free energy of the sun and give your electricity a rest.
l
Make sure the back-up batteries on your electric fencing and intruder detection system are in optimal working order; replace them if necessary.
Think ‘switch off’ Before you load the kids into the car and head out... l
Empty your fridge and freezer; switch off, defrost and leave the doors open.
l
Switch off your geyser.
l
Switch off all power buttons.
l
Switch off your oven and microwave at the wall.
l
Switch off air-conditioners and fans.
l
Switch off all unnecessary lights.
l
Switch off the water and power supply to water features and fountains in your garden.
l
Set your pool pump to operate for four hours per day – it is enough to keep the pool clean while it is not being used.
l
And, make sure the pool pump is set to run outside 5pm to 9pm, the period of peak demand for electricity in South Africa.
Think about this: the less electricity you use the more you save… l
Being electricity smart and energy conscious can earn you a tidy sum every month.
l
Each little bit helps... even a saving of just R100 per month on your electricity bill is an extra R1 200 per year in your pocket.

eyers Chocolates is launching its new range of finest-quality chocolate products, made from the master chocolatier Kees Beyers’ own recipe. Beyers Nutty Choc Bites is a range of premium-quality chocolate-covered nuts in three delicious variants. Nutty Choc Bites Peri Peri offers a taste sensation for the more adventurous chocolate lover, giving a delicious chocolatey twist to this popular local flavour. Lightly roasted peanuts are dusted in peri peri and coated in milk chocolate ... a first for the South African market.
All Beyers chocolates contain real chocolate with a minimum 35% cocoa content, with no artificial flavours or colourants, hydrogenated fats or genetically modified ingredients.
Nutty Choc Bites Peanut Butter is a moreish mix of lightly roasted peanuts smothered in peanut butter and enrobed in smooth milk chocolate.
Available nationwide at Pick n Pay and Spar, Beyers Nutty Choc Bites come in an easy-dispensing 50g box and retail for around R17 each.
Finally, for those who prefer a chocolate classic, Nutty Choc Bites Caramel teams caramelised chocolate almonds with a coating of Beyers Chocolates’ premium milk chocolate.
For over 25 years, South Africans have been enjoying Beyers handdecorated treats without even realising it, since many of the chocolates produced for some of the country’s largest retailers are in fact Beyers chocolates under another name.
As with all Beyers chocolates, only
18
the best ingredients are good enough for the brand’s master chocolatier. Kees imports the Nutty Choc Bites almonds from Turkey, which along with its Middle-Eastern neighbours, produces some of the world’s best-quality almonds. And being a Proudly-SA brand, Beyers Chocolates sources peanuts from home, with Kees dealing directly with local farmers to ensure he receives the best-quality nut the country has to offer.

W
ith the festive season fast approaching, your home and dining area in particular, will become main areas of focus for any yluetide in-home entertaining that you may be planning. So why not revamp your dining room with the latest dining décor trends, advises Anton Odendaal from leading furniture retailer, Rochester. Antique chic “Incorporating old with new is a popular trend – taking weathered, antique or classic pieces and incorporating them with modern furniture can result in a very stylish and interesting look for your dining area,” explains Anton. He suggests using small items to accent your dining room, such as baroque frames on walls or an ornate vase in the centre of the table. This is a move away from the slick minimalist décor trend.

Bright and bold Bright colours can bring a summery feeling into your dining area, notes Anton: “Yellow in particular is becoming fashionable. Many people ae intimidated by yellow, but incorporating small touches of this bold colour into your dining space can result in a warm and inviting area with s fresh appeal.” It’s a man’s world Masculine touches are becoming

more popular in the home – think dark colours, wood and leather. Not only is this trend cosy and comfortable, but it also allows for a more family-friendly space as these materials are durable, as well as making the man of the house feel like he was considered in the interior decorating Tasteful texture “Texture is an effective way of adding interest to the dining area, “explains Anton, “Tactile fabrics and wallpaper make your home more tactile and interactive, as well as adding subtle accents that can bring the space together.” Texture can be incorporated into a space by means combining a variety of natural textures such as wood grain on tables, leather upholstery on chairs, complemented by a shaggy carpet for example. Go graphic “Bold, graphic modern prints are everywhere this season - from wallpaper to upholstery fabric. Limit this trend to accents so as not to overwhelm your space - include smaller elements in bold prints and keep the rest of the decor plain and simple,” explains Anton. Choosing graphic black and white wallpaper and pairing it with dark, square-shaped dining room furniture for example, can effortlessly add an edgy modern feeling to a space. www.rochester.co.za

BUNNAHABHAIN SINGLE MALT
PARC FERMÉ
A Gift To Give: The Distinctive Bunnahabhain Single Malt This Festive Season
T
he unmistakably elegant, award-wining Bunnahabhain single malts make the perfect gift for someone who appreciates exclusivity this festive season. Situated on the world-famous whisky-producing Isle of Islay, the Bunnahabhain distillery overlooks the Sound of Islay. And it is here, in the warehouses built in 1881 that the single malts quietly mature and develop the gentle characteristics and noticeable sea influence evident in the finish. Bunnahabhain (pronounced Bū-naha-venn) is the only distillery on Islay using water from natural springs in the bed of the Margadale River. It also uses unpeated malted barley in the production of the hand-crafted range of 12, 18 and 25 year-old single malts. And for this reason, the
whiskies are known as the “gentle taste of Islay”. Created by master distiller Ian MacMillan, the whiskies are un-chillfiltered, a return to the whisky-making tradition of Bunnahabhain’s distillers dating back many years. With nothing taken away or added, the whisky retains all of its depth of flavour, aromas, colours and character. This allows the gentle, subtle notes of the malts to come through, and provides a purer taste, nose and appearance and as close to what MacMillan personally selected from the ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The Bunnahabhain range of single malts are available from fine whisky and liquor outlets and retail for about R490 (12 year old), R900 (18 year old) and R2 600 (25 year old).

PEACHES SWIMWEAR Making Waves On South African Shores.
I
ntroducing Peaches, a locally produced swimwear label that’s making waves on South African shores. Founded by two friends, inspired by a beach holiday, Peaches is about more than just a bikini that fits your curves and your unique style, it’s about taking a wardrobe staple and making it work for you, whatever your mood, whatever your poolside personality. “The Peaches brand is about more than selling swimwear,” explain founders Alex Masters and Cait Edgecombe, “it’s about selling a feeling. The same feeling we had, lying on that beach, sipping cocktail’s while we watched the sun dip below the horizon – not a worry in the world. Life was just Peaches!”
The beauty of a Peaches bikini is its hassle-free versatility. Each bikini can be worn three ways, available in several eye-popping colour combinations and on-trend prints, Peaches bikinis can be adjusted to compliment every body shape. Wear one bikini three ways or splurge on two or three bikinis to give your seaside wardrobe endless ‘mix n match’ possibilities. With Peaches you also get the added peace of mind that not every second sunbather will be wearing the same bikini as you come December, as Alex and Cait keep the label fresh and pretty exclusive: “When it comes to looking the part, we like to stand out from the crowd and we assume that the Peaches customer feels the same way.” Our Facebook Page is: www.facebook.com/PeachesSwimwear

o the year 2013 has finally come to an end. The Christmas decorations are on display, the flowers are in full bloom and the festive season has slowly found its way into our lives yet again. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all take an early retirement? Wouldn’t it be stress-free to dodge contacts with people and remain enclosed in our close circles of friends and families? Wouldn’t it be marvelous to resign? Well unfortunately non of these options are probable or possible so rather we unwind, unravel, untwist

and unroll and begin planning our year end travel destination. The thrill and excitement that comes with venturing into the various travel objectives is paramount. It is where we all connect, it rejuvenates and revives us. The simple truth is that being in nature, in love with the wild mountains, the unmanicured beaches, or the artistry of the bush is what gives us all serenity; peace of mind. Fortunately South Africa with its vast horizons, sparkling sunsets, moonlight serenades and its exquisiteness within each landscape, every wildlife
creature and all its flora and fauna, allows for innumerable holiday havens. The first obvious choice would be Cape Town. Through appreciating the cuisine, the culture and the natural beauty that exists within Cape Town, as a destination it is perfect. A little outside of the hustle and bustle is the glorious wine estates, which always offer tranquility, and are also romantic. Hout Bay serves the best fish and chips and one of the 7 wonders of the world, the one and only, Table Mountain, is spectacular. Another option would be to take a road trip through the Cape or down the coast of Kwazulu Natal or even through the backdrop of Knysna and

grasp at what our beautiful country has to offer. Another desired destination, which is just 45 minutes outside of Johannesburg, is Magaliesburg. Beautiful gardens, lovely temperatures and many quaint, picturesque guesthouses and boutique hotels. Whatever you do make sure you become deeply embedded into the spirit of the festive season. And luckily our travel section will help make your decision simpler as we take you through a few journeys and offer you innovative travel ideas, focusing on Cape Town, Mozambique, Thailand and Munich.

rom October, food and wine lovers in Gauteng will be able to enjoy monthly winemaker’s evenings at Kievits Kroon Country Estate, just outside Pretoria. The dates for the first two evenings have been confirmed and will see Executive Chef Sammy Mashile join winemakers from the Robertson Wine Valley to create mouth-watering six-course tasting menus, each dish perfectly paired with wines from the featured estate. The winemakers will talk to guests about their wines, and explain why they were paired with each dish. Guests will have the opportunity to chat to the winemakers and ask questions. After dinner guests will retire to their luxurious rooms for the night, and then enjoy a sumptuous leisurely buffet breakfast in the morning before check out. MD of Kievits Kroon, Alan O’Leary, says that the winemaker’s evenings will add to the ‘winelands’ experience at Kievits Kroon. “We are known as the Winelands in Gauteng because of the Cape-Dutch style architecture of the buildings on the estate,” says O’Leary. “We took this a step further with the launch of our own wine labels in 2010 and a Cap Classique this year. Our wine list has just won its fifth consecutive Diamond Award in the
Diners Club Wine List Awards. We also recently hosted the Robertson Wine Valley Festival which was a great success and allowed us to forge good ties with the winemakers from that region of the Cape. We are now looking forward to hosting them individually and learning more about their award-winning wines.” The confirmed dates for the first two winemaker’s evenings at Kievits Kroon are 26 October with Malcolm Human (winemaker at Van Loveren) and 30 November with Pierre de Klerk (winemaker at Graham Beck Wines). Malcolm Human describes the Van Loveren wines as premium quality wines which maximise natural varietal fruit flavours from carefully selected quality grapes. “Our wines are quality and value for money South African wines of distinctive character,” he says. Pierre de Klerk says that Graham Beck’s Robertson estate, Madeba, situated in the Breede River Valley, focuses on minimal intervention so that the authentic essence of the fruit and terroir shine through in the final wine. We are committed to creating world class wines of unparalleled distinction and inimitable character,” he says.

FAIRMONT ZIMBALI RESORT It’s A Lifestyle
T
he Fairmont Zimbali Resort is located on one of three coastal forest estates in the world – a 700-hectare protected tropical paradise. Tucked between two World Unesco Heritage Sites in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa along the south-east shore known as the Dolphin Coast, it fronts the spectacular Indian Ocean. Zimbali – Zulu for valley of flowers, captivates visitors with its untouched natural splendor. A popular destination with South Africans, the area is caressed by the warm currents of the Indian Ocean and offers a subtropical climate, year-round sunshine, lush foliage and culinary influences from the polyglot of cultures - Zulu, Indian, British, and Dutch. Facilities at Fairmont Zimbali Resort include a Willow Stream Spa with 10 treatment rooms; nine restaurants and bars; five pools; beach; tennis and squash courts; and an 18-hole Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course. At the sister property - the colonialstyled Fairmont Zimbali Lodge, there is a restaurant, lounge, and four pools. A kid-friendly area has a play area with swings, pool, and supervised activities, and the hotels offer reciprocal signing privileges with guest shuttles between the properties and golf course. The Coral Tree, located in the resort, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as specialty buffets on weekends and special occasions. Meals can be savoured on the outdoor terrace, and small parties can also arrange to dine in a secluded indoor, or separate outdoor area. Dalchini is the lobby level tea lounge that serves an African or Indian-inspired afternoon tea daily,
and can be used by groups for functions. For a cocktail or glass of wine, snacks and light meals, 31 Degrees provides a relaxing place to sip. The wine bar, Vinum and OSA, an haute South African steakhouse, share an elegant two-storey supper club style venue. Diner’s Club has awarded the restaurant their highest award – Diamond status, for the outstanding South African wine list. Guests can climb out of the pool and take a bistro break at Ayoba, with a wood-fired pizza oven or enjoy a creative cocktail served with warm ocean breezes at the adjacent Ma khaza, the indoor/outdoor bar. Burger buffs will want to head to BITE where they can “build-your-own” featuring iconic Karan beef, or opt for ostrich, lamb, chicken or homemade lentil and bean burgers. The chef’s signature sheshebo, a tomato and onion relish, is served on the side along with thick hand-cut fries and onion rings, while waist-watchers can select from assorted salads. The Fairmont Zimbali Resort is an ideal venue for meetings, incentives and social events like weddings. There is a 280-square metre (2,900 square foot) ballroom for up to 220 guests banquet-style, or 300 theatre-style. An adjacent 150 square metre (1,615 square foot) pre-function space can be used for registration or displays, and a private outdoor courtyard is a popular option for weddings and breakouts. An executive meeting room, suitable for up to 12 people in boardroom style, is also available. And for guests who need to work, a business centre is equipped with work stations, high-speed internet access, computers, printers and phones. A variety of day trips and activities are easily arranged through the concierge.

The Grill Jichana Where You Want To Be

he LIt’s the place you want to be when looking for a truly great meal in Durban. It’s The Grill Jichana – and it’s all about ‘jichana’, the Swahili slang term for ‘eating good’.
The starter menu offers a simple but substantial selection of salads, hand crafted from fresh market ingredients, to best complement the focus of the menu, which is on grills.
Located on Durban’s Golden Mile in the recently launched Tsogo Sun’s Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani hotel complex, The Grill Jichana is in a league of its own. Entering through either the hotel or the street entrance, diners will be struck by the modern and minimalistic interior design, which is instantly made welcoming with warm touches. This is a place where the focus is on comfort, a relaxing ambience, and good, simple food prepared in the most authentic way to highlight the natural flavours.
The beef used is premium grade and sourced from Karan Beef, carefully selected and hand cut by an in-house butcher before being aged through a specific maturation process. “This allows us to offer our diners the best prime cuts available, seasoned with our aromatic house spice, infused with crushed mustard seed, rock sea salt and lemon black pepper, before being flame-grilled over volcanic rock with herbed honey barbeque basting,” says executive chef Shaun Munro, who developed the menu for The Grill Jichana and oversees all the restaurants within the complex.
The Grill Jichana brings in the African theming of its host hotel and is an exploration of the African East Coast spice route, combining the flavours of cassia, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric and pepper with

small but well considered offering of rotisserie chicken, supreme chicken or roast duck, all of which are free range and raised in the Dargle Valley in KZN. “The rotisserie allows for succulent cooking before being flame grilled with lemon and herbs, or alternatively basted with our Dares-Salaam restaurant Baraza’s pili-pili basting,” says Chef Shaun. On the fish front, all but the Norwegian salmon is sustainably sourced from local fisheries and are all SASSI listed, with the option of fresh linefish in an East Coast spice rub, inland salt water dusky kob served with homemade aioli, Norwegan salmon with savoury mango salsa or grilled LM tiger king prawns. Vegetarians have the option of a haloumi stack or veggie medley. Side orders are plentiful and include the never-to-be-missed homemade bafana potato chips – actually more of a pillar than a mere chip – which undergo an extensive cooking process to create the perfect chip. Other options include creamed potato mash, shoestring fries, baked potato, crispy battered onion rings, cara-

melised baby onions with sautéed button mushrooms, steamed fresh market vegetables, curried butternut mash with coriander butter, braised spinach with garlic cream and rocket, fresh tomato and red onion salad. The dessert menu is a simple but glorious affair, with tried and trusted favourites given an injection of freshness, including a deconstructed milk tart and the ultimate creation for any chocoholic – a five-chocolateValrhona chocolate ball with fresh fruit relish, that explodes into a melted puddle of decadent chocolate on the plate. The wine list is part of the menu and is carefully selected to perfectly complement all the mouth-watering dishes on offer – whether by the glass or by the bottle. The Grill Jichana is fast becoming a favourite place for a truly great meal in an absolutely ideal setting, whatever your preference. GOING PLACES The Cape Town Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system, MyCiTi, is a bold initiative to transform the public transport sector by dramatically improving the customer’s experience thereof. This initiative will seek to integrate all of the current transport modal options into a coherent package. Among the modes to be integrated are: Metrorail services, road-based services on trunk routes, conventional bus services, minibus taxi integration, feeder bus services, improved pedestrian and bicycle access, metered taxi integration and park-and-ride facilities. The principal way in which the City of Cape Town will transform the road-based public transport services is a concept known as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). BRT is a high-quality bus-based transit system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost-effective urban mobility with segregated right-of-way infrastructure, rapid
and frequent operations, and excellence in marketing and customer service. BRT has virtually all the performance and comfort of a modern rail-based transit system but at a fraction of the cost – typically four to 20 times less than a tram or light rail transit system and 10 to 100 times less than a rail system. The central defining feature of BRT is its focus on customer service. Dedicated, median bus ways provide customers with dramatically reduced travel times. Because the vehicles move quickly in peak hour, more people are encouraged to switch from private car use to public transport, which makes the whole system far more viable. The dedicated lanes also reduce operating costs so that fare levels are quite affordable. Special attention is also given to safety and security through the presence of extensive security personnel and the use of CCTV cameras.
SYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE MyCiTi operates in different ways depending on the area being served. Some of the factors the system design takes into account are passenger demand, whether the area is largely residential or industrial, the width of the roads and space on the pavements. Currently on main routes, larger (high-floor) buses stop at glassenclosed stations in the median or middle of the road. These stations allow for quick, level boarding and easy transfers to other routes. The buses on these routes usually travel on their own dedicated red lanes, or as on the N2, in lanes reserved for public transport vehicles during peak hours. On local routes, smaller low-floor buses stop at the side of the road at stops or bus shelters. WALKING AND CYCLING The MyCiTi integrated rapid transit
Festive Season 2013 / www.festiveseason.co.za
system is being designed to make it easy for users to choose public transport instead of private cars. Most users will need to walk a short distance before they are able to board a bus, while some may want to cycle. Historically pedestrian and bicycle access in South African cities has been inadequate. MyCiTi aims to create a safe and pleasant pedestrian environment around stations and stops, which contributes to the overall quality of the MyCiTi experience. In countries where public transport use is widespread the public health benefits are also tangible, as users increase their daily exercise and avoid the stress of driving in congested traffic or on poor quality transport services. To encourage cycling and provide a more integrated experience, bicycles are allowed onto MyCiTi buses and cycle racks are available in the vicinity of many of the stations.

great city of Cape Town in the coming decades and in order to meet the needs of the changes in the economy& society while maintaining the guidelines for sustainable development, leaders and planners of the city are busy arranging and implementing an integrated system that will precede and direct the way for infrastructure to lead developments in a way that will meet its’ greater agenda. Launched in the last quarter of 2012, Transport for Cape Town is responsible for the City’s 2013-2018 Integrated Transport Plan (ITP) and the Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN), which addresses both road and rail transportation. The City will be upgrading and expanding Cape Town’s public transport interchanges over the next five years to accommodate the growth in demand for access and mobility. A total of 25 high-commuter-traffic interchanges have been identified to receive special focus as part of the project, which is anticipated to cost around R321 million. This improvement programme forms part of the City’s mobility strategy, which supports the development of a balanced transport system. It focuses on all elements of the transport system, including rail, bus, taxi, cycling, pedestrians, parking management, freight and traffic management information and data. This will be undertaken under the banner of Transport for Cape Town, so as to ensure synergy and a collaborative approach.
