foreword

People of Joburg!

Zaahirah Bhamjee

What does Joburg mean to you. Joburg is a chaotic, rushed and materialistic place, but it’s home and I love it. What inspired you to start your own blog? I’ve had a blog for almost as long as I can remember. I started my first blog with my best friend in grade 9 and I proceeded to write about embarrassing teenage things.Thankfully, I’ve deleted that one! What does your blog encompass? I enjoy sharing beauty, travel and lifestyle content. I love travel and I try to share stories about the places I have been as possible. Describe your style in three words… That’s hard! I just got a job so I am currently transitioning from a very casual style to a more, minimal look. I like to buy timeless, quality pieces and I am not always in touch with trends.

So three words: minimal, androgynous and cute. Your favourite spot to shop in Jozi? I am a fast fashion girl, so I hate to say it, but you’ll find me at Sandton City. Where can we follow you on social media?

6am For me, a normal weekend morning starts off with some cycling or running around the Cradle of Humankind out in Muldersdrift. We park our cars at Something Country, a great spot for a post-exercise cappuchino. The bigger the better. www.somethingcountry.co.za 10am One of my favourite breakfast spots in Jozi is 2B in Epsom Downs. They know me so well, I don’t even has to ask for my Very Berrie Smoothie. Delicious, refreshing and even better when served with a hearty breakast consisting of poached eggs, toast and depending on the rigourous nature of the exercise, either bacon or mince. www.facebook.com/2bcuisine 2pm I live in one of the nicest areas in the city, if I say so myself. The Parkhurst village is always buzzing and there’s always something fun on the go. If you’re looking for a vibe, Rocket and Espresso are defiitely where you need to be, and the calmer bits are just a little further down 4th. www.craftrestaurant.co.za 5pm As someone who loves the inner city and a place with a pulse and a backdrop of the city of gold is a winner, I highlighy recommend the Living Room. It’s perfect for the chilled December/ January period where you’re either winding down, or prepping yourself for the year ahead. www.livingroomjozi.co.za 8pm The perfect way to wrap up a fun-filled day is to enjoy a home-made, gourmet burger at Dukes in Greenside. The service is on point, the food is delicious and they have an array of craft beers to choose from too. Take your friends, line the stomachs and enjoy the vibe. www.dukesburgers.co.za

In addition, the Resort’s unique indoor water park, Aquadome, offers Bubble Soccer in a Zorb ball these holidays for the whole family as well as several evening parties for adults throughout December, including a New Year’s Eve bash.

Hello Joburg’s

HOT spots

Life Grand Cafe - Mall of the South Food tastes better when you eat it in style

I

t seems a pity Hello Joburgers, to miss such a grand opportunity and not visit the brand new Life Grand Café at the Mall of the South. Having just opened its majestic doors in October we absolutely had to indulge. Lets set the scene; you enter the restaurant, which is mostly outdoors, enhancing the airy, carefree and cheerful atmosphere. The beautiful lime green furnishings and rose gold touches, catch your eye in the décor, it feels as if you are on the streets of Spain. We started our meal with a freshly squeezed orange, ginger and carrot juice. Real food, real easy. Then we took an adventure through the salad bar,

which quite literally is beautifully mind-blowing in its flavor and display. With an extensive selection of fresh artichokes, marinated olives, crunchy broccoli, plump sundried tomatoes and the juiciest, creamiest feta in town, we were spoiled for choice. Top it off with some buffalo mozzarella or seared tuna or even fillet steak- this is Mediterranean style cooking of dazzling sophistication and pizazz. Comfortable classics with a twist, this menu is inspirational, persuasive and delightful. For main we dabbled in the sushi, holding the highest standards of ingredients. The quality is substantial, solid and treated solely with love. We enjoyed the salmon sashimi salad of thinly sliced salmon dressed with soy sauce, enhanced with sweet onions and aromatic

sesame oil. The ceviche of salmon was also wonderful; we had to order a second! These tiny seasonal morsels of deliciousness, just beg to be enjoyed, especially on a warm summers day. Pair it with a glass of Chardonnay and it’s a ten out of ten. It’s simple: this restaurant just has the x factor and it sure is something special. Hello Joburg • December 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

The restaurant is based on the all American style diner concept and because of its unique décor; the space is quirky, fun and original. The ambience is eccentric with a touch of fabulousity. Its just beautifully bizarre and we all deserve to be spoiled like the royals, with delectable delights, don’t we Hello Joburgers? Now everything you try will be fantastic, this is guaranteed but if you want some recommendations, here you have it: For

starters the smoked chicken wings are non-negotiable and the artichoke and Parmesan pate with toasted bread is a raving victory. If you believe every bite is worth the calorie then you have to try the Truffle Mac and Cheese served with confit garlic toast and greens. Oh my heavens it is delicious, your taste buds will agree. The buttermilk marinated southern style fried chicken is also outstanding or you can opt for something fresh right outta the smoker- smoked slow, low and oh so yummo! P.S The Countess has their very own barista so if you have a passion for coffee and enjoy a warm cuppa, then this is just the spot! And you can also take a piece of royalty home with you as they sell their own condiments, sauces and pickles. H

Sandton Sun reopens after R210 million makeover

T

sogo Sun’s iconic Sandton Sun hotel has returned to its rightful place as a sophisticated and modern landmark in the area, following an investment of R210 million into its recently undertaken refurbishment. The 31-year-old hotel is situated in a prime location within the busy and exclusive business and retail hub of Sandton, and has been repositioned as a gateway into the Sandton City shopping centre. With street and hotel access linking it with Sandton City’s new Diamond Walk, which is described as ‘Africa’s definitive luxury and super-luxury retail destination’, the hotel is a natural asset to the centre and to the city of Johannesburg.

With the refurbishment, the number of hotel rooms has reduced by eight to 326 spacious rooms and suites that have been designed to be luxurious with all the necessary conveniences and comfort. Throughout the hotel, furniture has been refurbished and repurposed where possible, and the ambience is slick and sophisticated, while still offering every guest a home away from home. Last minute

...with a little tech help

The silly season is upon us and that usually means you’ll be running around like a headless chicken trying to get everything done. That’s why a little bit of a technology can go a long way. Using the internet to get stuff done really is the best way to better manage your time. This month I’ve found two incredible Joburg-based services that will make sure you avoid the festive rush and actually get a chance to put your feet up.

Holiday gifts? Sorted. The Counter is a Jozi legend. Known for mouth-watering brownies that may go down as the best in the country, the small pop up and market regular has become a firm favourite among those with a sweet tooth. The confectionary offered up has extended from brownies to salted caramel toffees and interesting mixes of marshmallows, smarties, aero bars and all sorts of other delicious yummy treats. For your Christmas gifting this year why not visit www.thecounter.co.za and order one (or four) of their handmade sweet boxes. They’ll do the baking, the packing, the wrapping and the delivering. You just need to sit back, relax and grin sheepishly as all your friends get fat. They’ll love you for the tasty sugar filled treats.

Clean your house, plan your Christmas party and get everything else done I found a little Joburg gem on Facebook recently. Consider it Done is a Parkhurst based business that will do all those tasks you put off. For the holidays they’re offering a spring clean of your home. At a cost of only R1500 for a 3 bedroom spot it is definitely worth it. Especially as they’ll also collect up all the belongings you no longer want and donate them to charity. Nice one right? They also plan Christmas and holiday functions, will source all your holiday decorations and check in on your house if you’re heading it out. They’ll even do your gardening for you. It’s pretty wonderful. You can find them at www.facebook.com/consideritdonejhb.

ello Joburgers if you came to the West Rand, more specifically the Eagle Canyon Estate in Honeydew you would be expecting a stunning golf course and a boring country estate of residential homes. Right? Wrong! Because The Eyrie Restaurant has now opened inside the estate and it is downright delightful. Expect delicious food, outstanding service and a reason to schlep all the way from Northern Joburg.

Relishing in the landscape and countryside and allowing for total relaxation. It’s a cantmiss opportunity Joburgers! The most important dish to try is the Asparagus Wild Style- steamed asparagus. Wild rocket and orange salad topped with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce, this dish will certainly keep you satisfied! The taste explosion is equally divine with poached pear, Gorgonzola and candied pecan salad all entwined in rocket and watercress and served with a drizzle of fig syrup… mouth watering!

For main course the Eyrie is famous for its burger bar, a two hundred gram, one hundred An Eyrie is a large nest of a bird of prey, percent pure Angus beef with a bouquet of and this symbolism runs throughout the relishes and sides and sauces to choose from. Now, for the best part of any meal. For those with a sweet tooth (like us) the dessert in a jar is a front runner- opt for the chocolate mousse or caramel cheesecake or the red velvet supreme. Oh and the butternut pumpkin pudding served with an orange scented ice cream and butterscotch sauce is totally worth every calorie! The Eyrie restaurant has created a haven for Joburgers to mingle and enjoy their time outdoors. Our city was made for exploring and we strongly suggest you get on down to the West Rand and explore the important beauty in our city. It’s just another reason to love Johannesburg! t’s classic French cuisine with a new, modern twist at roots restaurant, where British born Chris Tustian has taken the reigns as Executive Chef.

Chris takes control of the roots kitchen after a tenure at the five star Budmarsh Private Lodge in the Magalies and he has promised to continue the roots tradition of only serving a degustation menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At a degustation restaurant the chef crafts a set multi-course menu that takes diners on a culinary adventure. “There is a science to degustation at roots that excites me. We know that your first few bites of any dish are the best, so I am creating set menus that offer you the best bites of every dish, with six or seven courses that not only compliment each other but are representative of the best organic ingredients on offer,” says Chris. This 35-year-old Chris’ South African experience also includes a successful tenure as head chef of Dish at Le Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, where his love for local wine and unique wine pairings found a perfect home. “South Africa is blessed with an abundance of great wine estates and accomplished wine makers. The emergence of young adventurous wine makers have added a new angle to our menus and together with our

There is a science to degustation at roots that excites me sommelier we have created a wine pairing menu that will reward amateur and oenophile alike,” says Tustian. Tustian arrived in South Africa in 2010 with his locally born fiancée and a clutch of World Cup Soccer tickets. Prior to making the journey, he worked in restaurants of well-known British destinations such as Bovey Castle and Gravetye Manor, in one and two Michelin restaurants and for VIP events such as the British Formula One Grand Prix, Wimbledon and the Henley Regatta boat race. “I earned my pocket money by working as a kitchen porter in restaurants from the age of 15. Since that young age, I have been obsessed with the way food reaches the cutting board and how it is reflected on the plate and palette. I look forward to share that continuous journey with patrons at roots,” says Tustian, who has even spent his holidays on farms and fishing trawlers to truly understand the origins of his ingredients. As part of the degustation tradition at roots, Tustian will craft a new menu every month, which is served on alternate days to the previous month’s menu. Tustian reserves special menus for wine tasting evenings and events such as weddings at Forum Homini. H

Lindor Assorted Gold 4 piece 50g R29.99

Because Christmas isn’t Christmas without the Lindt Bear

What would Christmas be without the Lindt Bear? Slimmer, sure but not nearly as decadent. The Lindt Bear family has grown this season with two new additions to the family. The Lindt Bear 500g, could possibly be the most yummy centre piece for any table with the middle sized Lindt Bear 200g placed on gold accented dishes with baubles and pearls for a fun seasonal touch. Then there’s baby bear who makes for a cute table placement, being just 10g. Glue it to paper star-shaped glitter bows and attach personalised name tags. Before the tree feels left out, hold the baubles. More Lindt Christmas offerings are the new Lindor and Lindt Bear Tree Decorations 150g, which include ten mini Lindt Bears and Lindor tree ornaments, made from the finest Lindt milk chocolate to decorate Christmas trees over the festive period. We have adorned our white Christmas tree with these, alongside the new Lindor Truffle Christmas Star Box 50g. For a larger pop of gold amongst our baubles we also cleverly attached the Lindt Bear 100g using clear nylon thread.

YOU Bar Loves YOU H

ello Joburgers it is with great excitement that we announce the opening of the brand new YouBar in Illovo Junction. And no we are not bias, just because the salon is around the corner from our offices has nothing to do with why we absolutely adore this nail and skin bar. If you love to take care of your precious skin at the same time as you take care of your hands and feet then this is just the spot. YouBar is a high-quality salon; it has a modern, clean design and is downright lovely. The décor is industrial vintage with one of a kind pieces and a contemporary, industrialized look and feel. Exclusive and elegant YouBar caters to corporate clientele as well as the more casual patron, because at YouBar comfort and quality is what is most important. Whilst still remaining sophisticated and relaxing, this location is a triumph. After your Mani you can pop on over to one of our favorite Greek restaurants in the city, Parea. I mean! Does that not complete this already perfect day? A manicure and a kebab. It’s a win-win! I would highly recommend you try the Shellac or Gelish manicure and pedicure because two ladies indulge your hands and feet simultaneously, quick, efficient and always professional. I had the luxury of being spoiled by Winnie, who almost put me to sleep with her luxurious hand massage (using the finest Africology products). Afterwards I had the Activator Hydrating QMS facial. My skin was left feeling plump, rejuvenated and glowing for days. Plus while you wait you are treated to Enmasse tea from the tea merchants. But this isn’t your ordinary cuppa tea- this is for the discerning tea drinker, with flavors like Naartjie Rooibos, Hot Cross Bun Chai and Jasmine Queen (my favorite) they’re too divine and are one hunfred percent caffeine free. But just when you thought the fun was over, you can also purchase T @YoubarIllovo the accessories. You can cherry-pick from a delicate glass 011 880 3056 teapot to a double wall glass teacup. Shop while you get www.youbar.co.za pampered, who would say no to that! H

This form of relaxation is all encompassing and because Midori staff is extremely qualified and passionate, it really allows for a topnotch treat. Nail art is having a major moment right now and we think it’s the perfect summer accessory. So if a three hour pamper session is your idea of recreation then listen up Joburgers. Forget conforming colors this season and embrace your own personal style, we say go for it, be daring! Not forgetting flawless sunshine kissed skin, Midori offers a range of facials. Fresh faced and glowy skin means you’ll be beach ready in no time. We love the QMS medi cosmetics facial at Midori salon . The facial is not only benefiting to your skin but also to your mind. Indian classical music encompasses the private room as you delve deep into total relaxation and relieve stress all at the same time. In the warm, quiet room, comfort is induced and you will leave with radiating skin and an infectious smile. Bonus, you can also have your eyebrows threaded at the same time. Winning! B

uilding a business is half of the equation; making your business successful is just as important. Dr John Demartini offers 10 essential principles for a successful business 1. Identify a need: Without a need to fill, there’s no business. Offer a service, skills or a product that fills a need. 2. Be inspired: Find those needs you are inspired to fill. When you can’t wait to get up in the morning and do your job, people can’t wait to use your services. 3. Identify what fulfills those needs: If you’re inspired to do things that are most important, you will increase your business. 4. Delegate low priotiy items: Hire people to do what you are not inspired to do. 5. Maximise profits: Make sure you are doing what’s important both effectively and efficiently. 6. Save: When you have a cushion of liquidity, you have a more stable business and will attract quality clients. 7. Invest: Make your money work for you. Invest in progressively higher levels of risk and return. 8. Consider everyone’s highest values: If you communicate the company’s vision in terms of employees’ highest values, they will produce more. Also, consider your clients’ needs regarding sales, advertising and marketing. 9. Expand the vision Otherwise you’ll plateau your business and your wealth.

HJ: Your career is a blessing because… JS: I’ve been able to leverage my brand from so many career angles, whether its as news anchor for Business Day TV/Sky News, entertainment reporter on CliffCentral and Cape Talk, or attending some of the world’s biggest red carpets, singing and performing -- I’ve been able to make it happen for myself, and also use my platform to help those in need. 24 hours in Sun City

Experience a weekend in the company of awesomeness

S

un City, well known for its taste of luxury, the place where fun is had and an abundance of pleasure is created. A location where anything is possible and where your greatest desires are met. It’s a dreamland, it’s an experience that promises fun, entertainment, pleasure and a whole lot of boisterous enjoyment. So we were given the opportunity (someone has to do it) to experience Sun City.

10h30: Take advantage of the Welcome Centre for Zip Slide

Sun City has fast become the favorite weekend destination for Joburgers, but could the destination offer a fun-filled weekend? We found out in 24 hours.

This is the ultimate outdoor adventure buzz; experience the world’s fastest zip slide. This will literally take your breath away but in the best way possible. Firstly you will get to experience the majestic views from the top of the mountain, taking in the stunning views of the Lost City and secondly you will have quite possible the best ride of your life. Adrenaline-charged, nerveracking and downright electrifying this was one of the best experiences we have ever had! Plus you can go with a loved one and experience the zip slide side by side.

9h00 : Arrive at the Welcome Centre for Quad-biking

13h00: Get lost in The Maze of the Lost City (and a beer-tasting)

Undoubtedly one of the best decisions you will ever make will be quad biking through the bush whilst mingling with the wildlife. Thrill-check. Adventurecheck. Merriment-check. You will be able to explore Sun City like never before and enjoy the likes of the majestic Rhino and the tenacious Zebra. This adventure certainly appeals to all the senses and did we mention it’s the best fun ever?!!

The largest permanent maze in the Southern Hemisphere, this is a brand new addition to Sun City. Beautifully constructed and a combination of modernity and incentive allows for the genius that is the maze. Get lost inside the archaically built stonewalls for hours, ending off with a refreshing ice cold beer or you can opt for an educational and delightful craft beer tasting. It’s an absolute must try! 15h00: Indulge and unwind at the Valley of Waves The only thing that could make us love this more was if they could park the Valley of the Waves right around the corner from home in Joburg. But we guess it is just a 40-minute flight. Before you enter the valley of Waves grab a bite at the Village food court (not forgetting to include a Smooch froyo too). The greatest news Hello Joburgers? There are brand new additions being integrated into the Valley of Waves including new restaurants and a stunning new deck, overlooking the sparkling blue waters. Bonus, there is also always a jam-packed line up of top local bands and artists offering lively entertainment. 18h30: Enjoy Dinner at Bocado Mediterranean Restaurant A firm favorite, offering a delicious selection of Mediterranean cuisine. Service with a smile and you are guaranteed to leave with a satisfied belly. 21:30: Snooze off at the newly renovated Sun Vacation Club. The Sun Vacation Club is the fastest selling timeshare in Southern Africa and the most affordable way to experience more of Sun City. The two bedroom lavish self-catering units are sophisticated yet comfortable and the new design allows for contentment and pure relaxation whilst showcasing grace and style. They certainly get our stamp of approval! H

These are all in the most stunning setting, close to the prestigious V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Over 40 000 people chose to stay in their apartments last year. T

he Protea Hotel Balalaika has been on the travel radar of many international and local travelers over the years, and for good reason. Situated in the heart of the bustling metropolis of Sandton, the hotel has been open for 65 years, and was initially established in 1949 as a tea garden rest stop for those travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria. To this day the gardens remain breath taking. Sitting in them listening to the abundance of local birds, you would be forgiven if you forgot that you are only a few meters away from the hustle and bustle of Maude Street. One of the busiest roads in Sandton, and home to the African version of Wall Street, this is the financial epicenter and commercial hub of Sandton and host to some of the country’s biggest banking institutions such as Investec, Nedbank and The Dutch Bank to name a few.

The corridors of The Balalaika are lined with antique furniture and artifacts harking back to the days of yesteryear and bursting with memories and mementoes of the influential people who have visited, amongst them famous musicians such as Steve Zachary who recorded his album inside the hotel, Sir Richard Branson who dropped in for a visit and signed a bottle of wine, and Gerard le Grand who founded the Balalaika.

The Balalaika is perfectly situated within the heart of city life, and yet is just 300 meters from the Sandton Gautrain station, and a mere 4 minutes’ walk from Sandton City Shopping Centre, Sandton Convention Centre and Nelson Mandela Square; however a free shuttle service is on offer by the hotel.

The conference venue can accommodate up to 300 delegates in The Oxford Room and most conference rooms boast natural lighting, all of them with custom made carpets and real crystal chandeliers imported from Egypt. The boardrooms are ideal for smaller groups and a variety of packages and themes are available to suit any requirements that clients may have.

Boasting 2 crystal clear pools to unwind next to, gorgeous gardens and 330 classically-styled rooms, the Balalaika aims to make guests feel as though they have never left home, with King-size beds, LCD television, electronic safe and a full en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower in each room. Business executives are catered to with a desk, office chair, international plug points and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the hotel.

The hotel encompasses such a prosperous history of Sandton and Johannesburg and it seems almost everyone you meet during your stay will have their own story and memories of the Balalaika over the years. Now progressing towards the 21st century, the hotel is constantly evolving, molding and forging ahead, yet still encompasses its old world charm and graceful airs.

The Colony Restaurant awakens ones taste buds with its sumptuous breakfast buffet, while The Oval Coffee Shop in the lobby caters to all other culinary requirements during the day, and the well-known Bull Run Restaurant which has been operating for a successful 14 years and is renowned for its steaks and fillets, selected by its Master Butcher and aged on site. The restaurant also creates its own wines – red and white, and is a well-known after work drinks and dinner spot for Joburgers based in the Sandton area. The Balalaika continues to evolve and supply un-paralled service. Enquire now for room and conferencing rates for your next trip or function, and experience the old world charm and gracious hospitality of an industry legend, The Protea Hotel Balalaika.H 20 Maude Street, Sandown 2196, Sandton 011 322 5000 www.balalaika.co.za reservations@balalaika.co.za

Land Rover DISCOVERY SPORT the Swiss army knife of SUV’s The new Land Rover Discovery Sport is part of the Land Rover brands segmentation plan: now on offer from the LR stable are three ranges of 4x4/SUV. Beginning with the rugged Defender range followed by the premium Discovery variety and topping out with the elite Range Rover collection. Each having a variety of models within its specific series. The Freelander 2 is gone; replaced by the Discovery Sport, which slots in under its bigger brother, the much loved go anywhere Discovery. So, for those of you who thought the new Discovery Sport replaced the boxy Discovery, it didn’t. It is in fact, a smaller sportier sibling. These days - families need to be multi-functional. Mom must work, as must dad, kids are tri-lingual while training to be future Olympians. It’s never a dull moment, downloading information about the

world on multi-sized smart devices all while carrying school projects and lift clubbing kids and mounting pavements – the Discovery Sport can do it all. The new Disco Sport is a multi-talented vehicle – versatility is its strongest point. It is highly adaptable, much like a Swiss army knife. Designed as a true Land Rover, it will go further off-the-beaten-track than any of its competitors. It’s also capable of wading in water up to depths of 600 mm. Like no other car in its class, the Disco Sport has a 2-3-2 seating arrangement: two seats upfront, three in the middle and two kid’s seats in the boot, which can be stowed if preferred. The Disco Sport is big enough to carry up to seven. It has the ability to adjust the size of its boot by either sliding the rear seats forward or flattening them completely. It offers four 12V charging sockets and six USB ports with easy access for all passengers. It has a secret storage compartment. It comes with an advanced vehicle

@DanielCalbacho

management system, called Terrain Response® which via the switch of a button lets the computer know that you’re going to take your Disco for a bundu bashing. It does what it needs to, and you can go pretty much wherever you want. The Disco Sport range is driven by a choice of the two diesel engines 2.2l TD4 (only available on the entry level Pure model) with 110 kW and the 2.2l SD4 with 140 kW or a 2.0l petrol engine, with 177 kW. All are turbo charged and mated with a dynamic 9-speed automatic gearbox. The range is denoted by four category names that symbolise the level of luxury standard features: Pure, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. Prices begin at around R550K and go up to R740K. My pick of the bunch would be the SD4 in SE, retailing at approx. R640K. All prices include a 5 year/100,000km Maintenance Plan and Roadside Assistance.

Let me begin by saying that this is the best Lexus I’ve driven up to date. Recently, I drove NX 200t SUV from Lexus, which gets a thumbs up from me but the RC is even better in my opinion. It’s a coupe, featuring its own bespoke chassis which was purposefully built by Lexus. Albeit, the RC is a hybrid of other Lexus products. It borrows its front end from the GS, giving it stiffness, its mid-section is from the IS C (convertible), providing rigidity, while the rear is from the IS, endowing the RC with a sporting rear wheel drive dynamic and finally, just a smidge of the Lexus LFA supercar that can be seen in the RC’s spectacular looks. Lexus’s new coupe has been created and designed to compete against the likes of Audi’s A5 coupe and BMW’s 4-Series. The RC, though similar in concept to its German rivals – luxurious sports coupes, is unique in its manifestation and overtly Lexus in its demeanour. Lexus, like other brands obviously design and engineer their cars for their customers – asking what their customers like- and therefore create a product specifically tailored for them. All Lexus products are renowned for being: quiet, supple, luxurious, modern, unique looking and featuring a host of fancy electronics as part of the standard package.

motoring

Lexus RC 350 F-SPORT The RC F-Sport is no different - menacing to look at. Glance quickly and your eye automatically looks back for further study. Its lines are bold; looking like nothing else. Driving the RC is a sublime experience – solid and purposeful all while doing so in absolute silence. The RC’s chassis is its backbone and it feels like concrete – solid as rock. Its suspension strikes the perfect balance between being luxuriously comfortable and sporting - with an agile nature. The use of advancement, like state-of-the-art multi-LED headlamps, tail lamps and fog lamps, as well as LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) for optimal vision and minimal power usage add to the RC’s dynamic nature. What’s impressive about the Lexus RC is its Aladdin’s cave of bells and whistles that come as a standard, adding a feeling of value to the cars overall package. The RC is driven by a 3.5l V6 engine and mated to a slick shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox. Offering 233kW which means hitting 0 to 100km/h in the mid six second mark. Priced at R730 900 which includes a four-year / 100 000km Lexus Distance Plan, complete full maintenance plan and features a four-year / 100 000km warranty.

Audi Q3

There’s nothing like a good haircut and a couple of shopping bags filled with new trendy clothes to make you feel like a new person. It’s in the subtle changes, yet the overall look is improved; enhancing the way you feel about yourself. That’s the sense I got from the refreshed Audi Q3 – it feels better about itself. Since its launch in 2012, the Q3 has been a firm favourite – selling over 5000 units locally. Now better than ever, the Q3 offers greater performance, more equipment and a more aggressive design. The new Audi Q3 features a more imposing 3D-design front grille, revised bumpers and headlights with the rear featuring new bumpers and taillight design. On review is the 2.0TFSI Quattro Q3 which sits under the flagship, RS Q3. Fitted with a 2.0 turbo charged engine, it charges out an impressive 132kW of power. This power is sent through to the roads

surface via all four wheels, using Audi’s world renowned Quattro system. The engine is mated to a razor sharp 7-speed double clutch automatic gearbox, S tronic. This means come rain or sunshine, the Q3 stays firmly planted in almost all road conditions and surfaces. Hitting 0 to 100 in 7.6 seconds and consuming 8.2l of the finest octane fuel while darting around town. The Q3 really isn’t the poor brother to bigger siblings, the Q5 and Q7. Rather it is tailored for a single adventure, a young couple, or a family of four. It’s an SUV with hot hatch charisma and exploratory charm. Beautifully appointed and solidly made – the Q3 is essentially a modern day version of the hatch: quick, practical, comfortable, sassy all while offering the benefit of an elevated ride.

Priced from R410 500 for the entry level 1.4 TFSI two wheel drive version. The 2.0 TFSI which I reviewed is priced at R499 500, while the range topping RS Q3 retails for a lofty R769 500. My money would be on the entry level 1.4 TFSI model with the optional S tronic automatic gear box. H Hello Joburg • December 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za
