OH, CHRISTMAS TREE

The festive season often comes with the challenge of a maxed-out bank account. We’ve asked Dial a Nerd’s CEO, Aaron Thornton, to help us out in this predicament, because everyone needs a little extra office space for the new year and some extra cash at month end. These mini PCs will only make your life easier and you’d be surprised at the amount of benefits the boast! That includes reducing your carbon footprint while also cutting down on power usage. Read more online.

Say farewell to your traditional, green, plastic tree this year and hello to our top five alternatives. Whether you’re sick and tired of conventional trees and want to try something different or just need one that’s a bit more compact, we’ve got you covered. Our list is super original, space saving and you can pretty much make them all yourself!

EXPERIENCE COUNTS Are you stuck on what to get the person in your life who seems to have everything? Instead of buying them another obligatory pair of socks or an overpriced soap set, why not get them an experience they’ll never forget? We’ve rounded up all of the best experiences to give as presents this holiday season, all the way from gin making to dining in the sky.

WIN A DIVOOM TIVOO! This funky little device is so much more than just a Bluetooth speaker. JAN COLLECTION JAN has collaborated with HAUS to create a dinnerware range that will provoke conversation around the table. For the print, the theme of decay – a beautiful and essential part of life and definitely also in food and wine – was explored. For the crockery, Kalahari grass was imprinted onto the surface of the plates and bowls and then baked in the earth. This range can not only be bought online but can also be found at Tswalu Kalahari and JAN Innovation Studio. Quite an exquisite gift and the perfect set for your Christmas table, we’d say.

shopping

Whether it involves camping in a parking lot for Black Friday deals or racing other parents for that last hot-ticket toy, we all have our own nightmare holiday shopping story. That’s why stress-free shopping is on top of our wish list this year. Yours too? Well, we’ve got a present for you! Instead of turning into a stressed-out scrooge this holiday, follow our tips that will save you time and money.

ENLIST YOUR OWN PERSONAL ELVES

Don’t feel guilty about outsourcing – Santa employs helpers too, doesn’t he? It’s time to get a personal shopper to do your dirty work for you. There are many personal shopping services available in Joburg, including Shopology, The Imagepreneur and Vogue Fox, who will let you leave the shopping to them. You’ll need to make an appointment, so search their websites and call ahead. Some high-end stores also offer personal shopping services – just stop by a store and ask a sales consultant about it. Independent retailers are known for this personal touch – one of the best (and unsung) reasons to shop local.

SKIP THE BLACK FRIDAY MAYHEM

No problem if you really love the ritual of hitting the malls on Black Friday. You’ll find major markdowns in many stores as well as online on hot-ticket items including TVs, iPhones, laptops, video game consoles and appliances. If you don’t, rather make it optional and know that sales will be going on in the weeks leading up to Christmas too. Also watch out for online merchants that promise Christmas Eve delivery without rush fees. Want to avoid the crowds in general while shopping? Then never shop on weekends – inevitably the busiest shopping days of the holiday season – and try weekday evenings instead.

SHOPPING SURVIVAL TRICKS

Santa’s got some competition this year. Psst, it’s you!

ALWAYS CHECK THE RETURN POLICY

Trust us … shopping for other people is difficult, and sometimes even the best-intentioned gift-giver gets it wrong. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a gift that isn’t suitable, which is why it’s so important to be aware of the return policy for every gift you purchase. Make a note of whether or not you’ll be able to return each gift and, if so, when you need to return it by. You don’t want to be heading back into the masses for no reason! Some stores will let you return anything, even without a receipt, while others shackle returns with time limits and restocking fees.

12

Hello Festive Season 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Put it on paper: No matter how small the gift may be, write down everyone you plan to buy a gift for with ideas of what to give them and a maximum amount you’re willing to spend. This list should include people who will receive holiday tips, such as your domestic worker and babysitter.

shopping

QUICK MONEY-SAVING TIPS

Group your shopping trips: Save petrol by figuring out where any brick and mortar stores you need to go to are and planning the route that will involve the least driving. Buy gifts in advance: Don’t wait until December to start buying holiday gifts. Instead, keep your eyes peeled all year round for items that your family and friends would like. After all, it’s usually when you’re not looking for something specific that you stumble across the perfect gift for your Dad or your bestie. Shop alone: Of course, shopping alone isn’t half as fun as shopping with a friend, but it will save you time and prevent you from being influenced to make big spur-of-the-moment purchases. Buy in bulk: One way of avoiding spending hours wasting time in every aisle trying to find the perfect gift for a friend or family member is to buy in bulk. Find a unique item that will work for a lot of people and buy enough for everyone. You can add personal flair to each gift with a handmade Christmas card.

NEVER WRAP A PRESENT AGAIN!

Words Candice May Images Supplied

Free gift wrapping isn’t as common as it once was, but some stores – including major retailers Woolworths and Edgars – still offer it. Smaller stores at least provide free gift packaging, typically in the form of a box with tissue paper and a ribbon. Other stores and online retailers will wrap for a small fee. It’s also a good idea to keep your eyes open for gift-wrapping tables in malls across Joburg and Pretoria at holiday time. They’re usually staffed by volunteers, and with a small donation to a good cause, you can have all your wrapping done for you.

HAVE GIFTS DELIVERED

Time is money … and for not that much money, you can save a lot of time by having your gifts delivered right to your door. Chain stores tend to charge to have gifts delivered, although it’s worth paying for the convenience. Some mom-and-pop stores, on the other hand, offer free delivery and setup on items such as furniture, grills and bikes. Our top trick? Simply ask your independent retailer if it will match the price you found at a chain store. Just make sure you check festive season delivery deadlines for each retailer to avoid gifts arriving late (eek!).

HOSTING

101

How to have a stress-free holiday do Whether it’s Christmas lunch, a New Year’s party or just a family gathering to celebrate the festive season, hosting can be stressful. But, fear not because we have advice that will make your event run as smoothly as Santa’s workshop you might even enjoy yourself too!

PLAN

As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. So, start laying out the plans for your event well ahead of time. We’re talking October, November. Perhaps there’s a reason shops start advertising Christmas so early after all? Make a list of all the things you need to buy and stick to it. Food can be tricky as you can’t always get it in advance, but things like Turkey you should definitely get at least a few days before your event. We can say with the utmost certainty that Woolworths will most probably not have any left come Christmas Eve. Prepare as many things as you can in the days leading up to the party and then focus on last-minute details on the day of the event. Remember to be realistic - Rome wasn’t built in a day; nor will your gingerbread house be if you have a million other things to do.

FESTIVE SPIRITS

Hosting is all about keeping your guests happy and one sure-fire way to do that is by keeping the drinks flowing. Create a drink station in your main entertainment area where guests can help themselves to beverages. This will avoid a traffic jam in the kitchen, or the endless stream of people troubling you for ice or cork screws. Another fun idea is to put together a DIY cocktail station. This will not only quench your guests’ thirst, but also double up as a fun party activity. As for you, it’s your party and you can drink if you want to. Just not too much. Remember that nobody likes a slurring host and chances are you won’t be able to tend to your visitors if you’ve had one too many glasses of mulled wine.

SEASON’S EATINGS

30

Sure, throwing a 5-course sit-down dinner party may seem like a fun option when you’re watching Nigella’s Christmas, but keeping it simple is generally better. It’s important to play to your strengths. If you’re Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen, go for it! But, if you’re leaning more towards a kitchen nightmare, rather keep it straightforward. Also take into account that, just because Nigella makes it look easy, doesn’t mean it is. If tacos and burgers are your speciality, why not make them? Your guests will undoubtedly enjoy something that is modest, but well-cooked over a gourmet meal that’s been obliterated. Another great option is having a buffet style table of snacks. This means less time in the kitchen and more time having fun with friends and family. Plus, if everything can be eaten at room temperature, you won’t have to panic while you try and round up everyone to eat before their gravy goes cold. SANTA’S LITTLE HELPERS

Hosting is tiring work, especially if it’s a big party. Share the load a little. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to close friends or family. Ask if they can help restock the ice or show people where the bathroom is. It doesn’t have to be big jobs, but even little things like this will give you more time to enjoy the party you’ve created. And, if other guests insist on helping you with things, let them. Seriously, you wouldn’t ordinarily turn down an offer from someone else to do the dishes, so why start now?

sure you get out of the kitchen and socialise with your guests. With everyone in the festive spirit, no one will blame you if some things aren’t perfect and if there was ever a time to get away with a store-bought malva pudding and pass it off as your own, this is it. They don’t call it the most wonderful time of the year for nothing!

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT

All good things must come to an end, but that’s something that certain party guests just don’t get. A nice way to politely signify the end LET IT GO of the celebration is by offering your visitors Don’t spend the whole time upset because an Irish coffee or cup of tea. Hopefully this no one took note of your seating plan, or will be enough of a gesture to let guests know because your expertly curated playlist has been that they’ve overstayed their welcome. Howevreplaced with someone else’s and they’ve taken er, another sneakier (and probably more effecover the role as DJ. Nothing is ever going to go tive) strategy is by getting one of your friends exactly to plan and it’s important that you take to park in your driveway first upon arrival and it in your stride and still enjoy the celebration. then letting your other guests park them in. There’s nothing worse than going to an event That way, when you’re ready to end the party, and not seeing the host the entire time. Make you can just tell your friend that it’s time to

pack up. Consequently, everyone else will have to move their cars for your friend to leave and the majority of the guests will probably decide to also head home. Then, all that’s left to do is to polish the remaining Prosecco and mince pies and reflect on an amazing party!

BEAT THE HANGER How to survive the party season as a

LET PEOPLE KNOW

When RSVP’ing for events, let the host know of your dietary requirements in time. Don’t assume that they’ll remember, even if they’ve hosted you before. In fact, you might even want to send them a text a few days before the event to remind them. It may seem a bit forward but explaining what you can and can’t eat will avoid future embarrassment for the both of you. This will (hopefully) ensure that won’t hear, “Oh, but you can eat the cheese platter, can’t you?” again.

We all know that the festive season is practically synonymous with food: Pigs in blankets, gammon, beef, turkey ... we could go on. But if you have dietary requirements, all the celebrations can feel like navigating a mine field of temptation and frustration. That’s why we’re bringing you our top tips on getting through the holiday period.

BRING GOOD TIDINGS

If you suspect there’s going to be nothing edible, make sure you offer to bring something. It’s not always possible at formal dinners and work events, but if it’s a braai or dinner party at a friend’s house you can take something substantial and filling with you such as stuffed mushrooms. Don’t just take one for yourself though – make a few extras because for some reason everyone always wants the vegan food at parties. Take your own tin foil as well, as the same tongs that touch the meat will touch your mushrooms too. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

If it’s an event where you’re a plus one, cut your losses and eat before you go. It’s highly doubtful that your partner’s colleagues or friend’s grandma will even remember your name, let alone the fact that you’re a vegan, vegetarian ... and what even is a pescatarian? Trust us – you don’t want to be the only hangry one there as you watch everyone tuck into the sausage rolls and chicken wings. Plus, you could always use the excuse that there’s nothing for you to eat to have a few more G&Ts. ’Tis the season to be jolly after all!

AND BE MERRY

32

Don’t be the vegan who stole Christmas. Even if there’s not much for you to eat, try and remember that that’s not all the holiday season is about. There will be plenty chances to enjoy a quinoa salad or Beyond Burger another time, but there won’t always be an opportunity to laugh and chat with family and friends. However, you could always consider gifting Robin Robertson’s cookbook, Veganize it! – then maybe next year the host will remember not to wrap your tofurky in bacon. WHISKY? WHY NOT?

Let’s face it – a dash of alcohol always adds to the festivities, so if you still want to have some while also being health conscious, whiskey might be one of your best options. Whiskey is extremely low in saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and carbs. It’s also rich in the powerful antioxidant called ellagic acid, which is said to prevent cancer and treat viral and bacterial infections. Ellaic acid, also found in whisky, fights free radicals which interrupt neural pathways and are associated with dementia. Hence, obviously if consumed in moderation, whisky can help reduce the gradual decline into dementia. It also thins your blood, so a shot a day may lower your risk of a stroke due to a clot. #HelloRecommends: The John Bannerman’s gift box, which comes with two glasses, is a great go-to for the festive season. It retails for R179.99 at most liquor stores nationwide and in addition to it being a healthy option, it’s also the perfect gift!

HEALTHY CELEBRATIONS

Alcohol (or none) for the health-conscious drinker Except for the harsh laws on drinking and driving these days, people are also leaning towards a healthier lifestyle, which means your drinks list for the festive season might have to be tweaked.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

OTHER HEALTHY ALCOHOL OPTIONS Tequila has numerous health benefits. Agavins (the sugar found in it) act like fibre, which means it won’t raise your blood sugar levels. It also helps lower cholesterol levels. Although all wines eventually convert into sugar, red wine still has some fantastic health benefits including overall heart health and slowing down the process of glucose hitting the blood stream. Rum has also proven to be advantageous for your mental health. A standard serving can reduce anxiety. Oh, and of course, a good glass of champagne can go a long way too – not only when it comes to enhancing memory performance, but also in enhancing the quality of your skin. So, go ahead and pour that glass of celebratory bubbly!

SHOTGUN (NOT) PLANNING THE YEAR-END FUNCTION Tips and tricks for a job nobody really wants The truth is, it is a lot of pressure being the person who has been tasked with planning and budgeting for the annual company year-end or festive season function. There can be high hopes and expectations. People work hard all year and feel like they deserve to be treated and spoiled just ahead of the December break. The HR manager wants to get drunk and forget their name and the interns want to eat at Marble Restaurant. You will never please everyone, but these should work for most. FEED AND HYDRATE

Let’s be honest, as humans with basic needs (and the cost of food and booze in the country), most people just want to eat and drink and share a few laughs. And, it’s always nice when it’s on someone else’s budget. A substantial meal with plenty of booze is the most essential consideration for a good party. The rest is a nice-to-have, really. If you’re looking for food suggestions that will stretch your budget over the table, consider these:  A table filled with an assortment of pizzas looks good and screams carbs for everyone. Maybe get a few salads so the people that are banting don’t kick up a fuss and pile some pizza’s on top of each for effect.  A good old braai, with rolls strewn across the table for burgers and boerewors rolls and chips and dips for the empty spots of the table says let’s eat and be merry.  Some beers and wines in a couple of buckets with ice says let the festivities begin.

THE EGO BOOST

34

There are of course those employees who need to feel special. And the truth is that this is a cheap and cheery one to achieve. Whatever you are planning to do for the occasion, adding a short awards ceremony before or after can only add to the festivities. A combo of legitimate awards and some silly ones are known to mix things up and can even be strategic with some employees.  The Closer, the Move and Shaker or the Rock-Star (aka employee of the year): Let’s be honest, someone always wants to feel like a winner. And if there is a prize that essentially calls one out, people are going to start competing. This could only benefit the team and business in the long run!  Office Foghorn: A fun way to call out the loudest or noisiest person in the room – it either makes them quieter come the new year or it makes them louder. It’s a risk you should be willing to take. Hello Festive Season 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za • www.hellopretoria.co.za

 A charitable donation: An up and coming trend is to take the money that would have been spent on the annual year-end function and donate it to a meaningful cause.  Spread the festivity: Another idea is to take the funds and throw a small party for a TAKE A VOTE children’s or old-age home. Ironically, coming So, it’s unlikely you’ll make everyone happy with together as a team to bring joy to others is the end of year function idea, but there is a guarlikely to facilitate team bonding more than a anteed way to get the majority onboard. DESTINATION CHRISTMAS

Revel

IN THE MAGIC See the city at its most sparkly

Around November, the City of Gold transforms into a magical wonderland with all the Christmas lights. Joburg displays range from over-the-top à la inflatable Santas and reindeer to simpler (but just as festive) versions. Get ready to ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at these landmarks that create the most picturesque holiday light displays during the festive season.

To usher in the festive season, Melrose Arch undergoes a transformation, as the shopping precinct festoons High Street with elaborate Christmas lights. And we’re not talking about a simple Christmas tree: Among the spectacular pieces you’ll see are a life-size Santa Claus, reindeer, teddy bear and gifts. The Grammy award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir graces the stage and at the very sound of their voices, the gorgeously crafted decorations come to life and light up the streets. Yes, Melrose Arch is a major tourist trap during the holidays, but you can’t deny its beauty. You can still be a jaded Joburger without being a total Grinch! Our advice is to wait until the out-of-towners have gone to bed so you can view the décor free of crowds. Melrose Arch, corner of Corlett Drive & M1 Highway, Melrose 1 www.melrosearch.co.za

CHRISTMAS VILLAGE

It just wouldn’t be the holidays if the city weren’t using up enough electricity in a week to power a small country for a decade. For the last six years, the Montecasino has been draping the outdoor piazza in twinkling fairy lights and ringing in the season alongside a big screen TV, playing Christmas movies. The European-style Christmas market features over 60 exhibitors showcasing all things Christmas – think festive décor to transform your house, tree and table, mouth-watering Christmas cakes and decorated biscuits, adorable elf dresses for little girls and handmade reindeer hats for babies, picnic baskets for Christmas Day outings and much more. While you’re there, be sure to cool down with a champagne popsicle and devour some freshly made churros. Montecasino, Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways 1 www.tsogosun.com

Get your camera ready for this one! Emperors Palace is one of the most cheerful and well-lit landmarks during the merriest time of year. It’s no shock, since the venue is known for its alwayspacked The Magic of Christmas show featuring Ryan Sharp. The light displays, funfair rides and Santa’s workshops in the gardens of the Peermont D’oreale Grande Hotel is just another seasonal signifier that Santa Claus is coming to town. Santa Claus, the Enchanted Fairy, Gift the Present, the Gingerbread Man, Frosty the Snowman, Santa’s Special Elves and Emperors Palace’s very own Garden Princess are certainly captivating enough to make us want to stop and take a photo or two. The best part? Proceeds from entrance fees are donated to Reach for a Dream and the Peermont Children’s and Education Trusts.

That’s right – Ster Kinekor movie theatres across the country are open on Christmas Day! There’s a lot of family time over the festive period isn’t there? So, by the time Christmas Day actually rolls around, it may have all been a little too much. Nonetheless, the big fat Christmas dinner was a hit: No one argued, complained about the food or stormed out over an old family feud and, really, you want to quit while you’re ahead. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend the rest of the day together as a family but with significantly less engagement, a movie is just the thing. 1 www.sterkinekor.com

FEELING LUCKY?

to know that the slots and tables at Montecasino and Time Square in Pretoria are open on Christmas Day. And when the budget for your casino outing is all done (#responsiblegambling), you and your mates can grab a bite and a beer as most of the restaurants at the shopping complex are open as well.

You may not have got what you really wanted for Christmas, but maybe Santa left a little luck in your stocking this year. Whether you’re a blackjack pro or just keen to throw some dice and squeal when it goes your way, you’ll be pleased

Not in the mood to spend hours in the kitchen prepping lunch for the family? Don’t worry – we don’t blame you! The good news is that not all kitchens will be closed on Christmas Day. Here are some really delicious options to consider: LeSi Singing Restaurant: Quick disclaimer: As the performers will be on their annual holiday, there won’t be singing, but there will there be a menu to write home about. Caesar Salad with Anchovies, Crispy Parmesan Chips and Quail Eggs Serves 4Â Ingredients Caesar Salad: 4 romaine lettuces, each cut in half Dressing: 2 tsp Dijon mustard 3 tbs white-wine vinegar 1 clove garlic, crushed 100g anchovies, whole 180g store-bought garlic-and-herb croutons 12 quail eggs 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 anchovy fillets, finely chopped 6 tbs olive oil micro herbs to garnish Method To make the salad, grill the lettuce in a griddle pan at medium-high heat until lightly charred. Remove and leave to rest. Carefully drop the quail eggs into a pot of hot water and cook for 2 minutes. Remove from the pot and blanch in ice-cold water to stop the cooking process. On a baking tray, sprinkle the grated Parmesan and place in the oven until melted. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. To make the dressing, combine the mustard, vinegar, garlic and anchovies in a blender. Start to blitz the mixture, slowly adding the oil until your dressing is light, smooth and creamy. Once the quail eggs have cooled, gently peel and cut into halves. Arrange the romaine lettuce on a plate, place the anchovies, croutons and eggs to your liking. Break the melted Parmesan into pieces and add to the salad. Lastly, drizzle the dressing onto the salad, garnish with micro herbs and serve! Q lornamaseko

STAY FIT AND HEALTHY ...realistically!

Staying fit and healthy among family cooking up a storm and glasses of bubbly being carried out is often quite a challenge. Keep your shape – physically and mentally – this holiday season with these realistic tips.

LESS MORE OFTEN

Eating smaller helpings more often will also help you not to overindulge. Instead of having three large meals, rather have five to six small meals during the course of the day. Also consider having dinner earlier and taking a walk afterwards.

EXERCISE EARLY

Getting your fitness routine out of the way when it’s still early in the morning will allow you to spend the rest of the day with family and friends without worrying about when you’re going to slip away for that jog.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Even though it’s tough to keep your shape during the holiday season, remember that it is a time for family, fun and festivities as well as a time for kindness. This includes kindness to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up for taking that second helping.

THE BALANCING ACT DON’T OVERINDULGE

The most important thing this holiday season might be to keep the balance. Eat that ice cream; have that second helping. Just be sure to balance it out with an extra 20-minute jog or some touch rugby on the beach and drink enough water.

Eating something before you head out might be a good start as that allows you not to overindulge yourself. Skipping meals is not such a good idea, as it might make you want to eat more later.

LIQUID CALORIES

Drinking in moderation might also help you to keep your calorie intake in check. You’d be surprised at how quickly liquid calories add up! The more alcohol, sugary drinks and juices you drink, the more calories to shake off after the holiday season, so keep track of what and how much of it you drink.

STAY ACTIVE

If you are unable to keep up with your normal fitness routine during the holiday, find alternative ways to keep moving. Whether you park your car further away from the mall’s entrance to get those steps in or whether you play volleyball on the beach – the secret is to not just sit on the couch all day.

DON’T SKIP STRENGTH WORKOUTS

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

With all those extra proteins you’re taking in as you are most probably going to braai much more over the holiday season, you might as well take advantage and build some muscle! There’s no use in losing what you’ve worked so hard for over the past year, just to want to gain it again in 2020. Don’t stop strength training.

REALISTIC GOALS

If you feel you won’t be able to exercise for one hour every day, rather set a goal of half an hour per day. That way you won’t be disappointed in yourself if you did not reach your goal.

WATER, WATER, WATER!

Summer is hot and South Africa’s festive season goes hand in hand with sunny days and tomato red shoulders and cheeks. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking a lot of water. In addition to helping you stay hydrated, it will also satiate your appetite and it might help prevent possible hangovers if you’ve overdone it. Taking advantage of the outdoors

Greetings, sun worshippers! Ah, the joys of summer in December as Mzansi slows down and empties out a little. For those looking to get their dose of Vitamin D, have fun in the sun and make Instagram memories, add some of these to your holiday itinerary.

SEE THE CITY

Let’s be honest – no matter how much you try and do it at other times of the year, you never really get around to it. So, there really is no better time to get to know your city than in December when the roads are quiet and the tourists are in Cape Town. Book it and do it! Hop onto the red bus and finally see the city in which you live and learn about its history, its culture and its charm. This is a thorough ride that includes about 20 of Joburg’s top attractions - from the Johannesburg Zoo and the Military Museum to the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre, the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. You can buy a single or 2- day ticket (you have the time) and really get personal with Mzanzi. Just remember to wear sunscreen - it gets hot on top of that double decker hop on and off bus. 1 info@citysightseeing.co.za

SADDLE UP

The bus around the city is awesome, but if you’re the type of person who’s keen on a little more adrenalin and much more speed, we might have something just for you! How about seeing Jozi from the saddle of a retro-style motorbike? Yup, On Any Day Adventures

is an awesome concept that offers motorcycle experiences across the country. These guys cover routes from Mpumulanga to Cape Town and as far north as the Victoria Falls. Whether you feel like spending the day in Newtown or Soweto or taking a more considered drive to Dullstroom, why not do it rock ’n roll style? Now, there’s something different to do this festive season! With guides on the route and all necessary safety precautions considered, what are you waiting for? You haven’t experienced the world until you’ve let your hair fly in the wind on the back of a bike. 1 info@onanydayadventures.com

LAZY DAYS ON THE RIVER

If you’d rather leave the vintage bikes to the petrol heads, how about a lazy tube ride on the Crocodile River? This is still a great way to enjoy the outdoors and it is definitely Instagram-worthy without having to pack a second pair of pants. It is as relaxing as it gets as you gently float downstream. Everyone gets their own tube and the float is about 2.5km long, which takes about 2 hours. That gives you plenty of time to plan your approach to 2020 and to ensure that you have a winning year ahead of you. With a guide for safety purposes (who comes armed with a fully stocked cooler box) we think this makes for the perfect December day out. 1 info@groundzeroadventures.co.za

MARKET MEANDERS

The above makes for quite a bit of physical exertions for one holiday, wouldn’t you say? For the rest of the holiday we’re suggesting some slow time. Take it super easy and meander around some of Jozi and Pretoria’s most popular markets and cool places to shop like 27 Boxes, the Bryanston Organic Market, Sylvia’s Christmas Market, The Wanderers Christmas Market and even the good old Rosebank Market won’t let you down. Pretoria’s Hazel Food Market, Irene Village Christmas Market and the Traditional German Christmas Market should also have your meandering around for hours. At this time of year, you’re guaranteed to find vendors peddling Christmas pies, retro Christmas décor and all the trinkets your heart desires. These make for great stocking fillers and even last minute pressies.

Words Carly Simon Images Supplied

CATCH A TAN

After all the bussing, riding, tubing and meandering, we don’t blame you if you may feel the need to come to an absolute standstill or lie down. That’s okay. You’re allowed to give yourself a reprieve. It’s the end of the year and if ever there was a time to enjoy the Jozi sun, it’s now. Whether in your back garden, your local park or a gorgeous hotel pool, lay down your towel, lather up with some sunscreen and open a good book. FYI: All you need to do to lie at The Wanderers Protea Hotel pool or The Fire & Ice in Melrose Arch – although we’ll deny it if anyone asks - is order a drink. From the moment the new year arrives, it’s all back to school, back to work and negotiating real life. So, if you want to kick back, bus, ride, tube, meander or tan, the time is now! FESTIVE entertainment This is what’s good! As the year comes to a close and you have a chance to put your feet up, we’ve got the best entertainment to keep you busy throughout the festive season holidays.

BINGE WATCH

It’s the perfect time of year to catch up on the best shows of 2019 that you might have missed? Our picks are definitely the final season of Game of Thrones. You can watch the epic conclusion of a television show that kept us glued to our seats for years via Showmax, which offers up the HBO classic for streaming. Another goodie? The Game also nabbed Best Action Game and Best PC Game 2019 from the Game Critics Awards, so worth the download.

The enduring allure of

MAURITIUS Flour-like sand, sugar-cane plantations and year-round soulsoothing sun strike an irresistible chord

Sometimes only Mauritius will do – a dreamy Indian Ocean island where the beaches are eye-searingly white, the water is as swimming-pool blue as it looks on the postcards and the deliciously reliable weather makes it a winter-sun showstopper. Here, more than anywhere else, it’s crucial to pick the right home for the week. While the colour-popping coral reefs and hammocks under swaying palm trees come as standard, Sun Resorts gives this destination something different to offer.

T

he archipelago of Mauritius is thrilling to fly over, and the airplane view of calm lagoons and pancakebatter atolls is sure to blast away any shorthaul fogginess. Fly in the morning and be there, barefoot, by lunchtime … or at least cocktail hour. Still sensationally unspoilt with dramatic natural topography, Mauritius feels almost otherworldly.

52

And beyond the beaches, it’s everything else that should come with a beach holiday. Few tropical paradises can compete with the magnetic culture of Mauritius’ seaside enclaves – the barefoot-chic island attitude and wild and free lifestyle offers so much fun for pleasure seekers, drinkers and eaters. Sand, sea and sunshine, but also food and wine, swimming and playing, music and dancing ... and there are some deeply smart

places to stay. Whether you’re looking for an isolated stretch of sand or a family-friendly resort, Sun Resorts has enough options to suit every type of traveller. So, what are you waiting for?

LONG BEACH

Best for: Equal measures of relaxation and activity Discerning guests seeking a blissful haven will instantly fall in love with the grande dame of the Sun Resorts group, the magnificent fivestar Long Beach. Fringing the famed beach at Belle Mare along the untamed East Coast of Mauritius and encompassed by dense tropical gardens, the resort manages to be both incredibly spoiling and completely laidback.

Sleep The generous luxury rooms are tastefully kitted out with sleek and stylish furniture and natural, mid-toned décor. Each one features a private balcony or terrace and close access to its stretch of beach, garden or pool. Views across the immaculate beach that melts into cyan waters are splendid, and the ocean is clear enough to see straight to the bottom – not to mention that the coral reef is home to thousands of sea creatures. That’s not all – king-size beds, speedy Wi-Fi and air-conditioning add to the ultimate personal comfort. If you can, book a Junior Suite with a sea view, which has a stunning sea view including a spacious private furnished terrace overlooking the lagoon.

The world-class Japanese restaurant offers everything from shrines of sushi to a full-blown kaiseki experience. It’s beautiful inside this upmarket establishment designed with dramatic Zen-like flair: There’s a calming wall of sake bottles at the entrance and an open sushi counter so you can watch the skilled chefs at work. Open daily for dinner to diners over the age of 16, Hasu is a sublime choice for a special occasion and promises an evening to remember. We highly recommend the five-course winepairing menu, which begins with an icy glass of Bottega Gold and presents some of the most pristine plates we’ve ever seen, including salmon sashimi with ginger-garlic crumbs, saikyo misomarinated black cod, charcoal-grilled beef cube roll, and a melting dark chocolate sphere, all washed down with perfect wine pairings. FYI: Hasu falls outside of Long Beach’s meal plans, but guests are given a credit that can be used towards a meal here.

Play Ile aux Cerfs leisure island, which lies off Trou d’Eau Douce in the largest lagoon of Mauritius, is the best reason to visit Long Beach. It’s probably the most reclusive island escape in Mauritius – and yet also the most indulgent, too. Keen golfers can learn how to play or perfect their swing at the Golf Academy, challenge themselves to an 18-hole course designed by two-time Masters Champion Bernhard Langer or relax on Fillbusters, the exclusive beach for golfers. On the private beach, guests are left alone on their little dot to mooch around the fresh coconut and cocktail bar, stretch out on a day bed or take a dip in the turquoise water. It’s a place where it feels like you’re the only people on the planet, but a piña colada is only a wave of the hand away. There’s also a public beach, beach restaurants, an adventure park and a wide variety of water sports.

The pan-Asian restaurant and cocktail bar shares the same name as the Paris original – and the Sugar Beach branch opened as part of a worldwide rollout. It has a sleek, clubby, oriental look and a food menu inspired by dishes from China, Japan and Thailand. Expect, then, a large sushi and sashimi selection plus dishes like seared tuna tartare, rock shrimp tempura, sea bass ceviche and wagyu rib eye steak. The Queen of the Beach is an absolute must-order – a platter of oysters, ceviche martinis, nigiri and other sushi rolls served on the most spectacular wooden display on ice.

The expert mixologists go above and beyond just a run-of-the-mill twist, creating the most dazzling drinks that have to be seen to be believed, such as the White Princess shaken with gin and lemongrass essential oil-infused sake and Flower Spritz made with Aperol-infused dry jasmine flower, sweet white wine and prosecco. The quirkiest, most Instagrammable tipple is the Make a Wish Mauritius 2019, which comes with a wish balloon for you to write down your wish and launch it into the sky. The cocktail menu is available at the bars at both Buddha-Bar Beach and Citronella’s. Relax The way you spend your time in this waterworld wonderland is entirely up to you. Spend the day blissfully lounging at the pool or on the flawless beach. At night, lie in bed or out on the starlit terrace and feel like you’re adrift on a yacht. You can also unwind at the spa, which offers an array of Cinq Mondes experiences steeped in timehonoured ritualistic ceremonies and ancient healing techniques from around the world. The use of the hammam, complimentary with any treatment booked, is not to be missed. Children can join their parents in the pampering or be kept occupied by Sun Kids. Play Fresh, fruity cocktails are synonymous with a fine beach holiday at Sugar Beach, so a mixology class with one of the resort’s talented barmen should be right at the top of your to-do list. Let them demonstrate how to concoct a delectable, island-inspired signature

cocktail to celebrate the sunset or set the mood for a lobster barbeque. Another way to embrace the dusk is with a special Mauritianthemed cocktail hour with front-row seats to a gorgeous sunset. There’s no better way to start your day than with invigorating sunrise activities like yoga, Bodyblade or Zumba followed by a healthy detox drink to boost your system. If you wish to continue the celebration of dawn, you can enjoy an excellent breakfast on the beach. Come sunset, watch the dramatic descent of the sun into the ocean from the water itself on a stand-up paddle board. Water lovers can also indulge in exploring the colourful marine life in the topaz lagoon, enjoying a group activity in the pool or learning a new water sport. Those who’d prefer to not get in the water can view vivid corals and beautiful sea creatures on the phenomenal glass bottom boat or navigate tropical terrain with an exciting mountain bike excursion. PS: Don’t miss the delightful in-room afternoon tea offering accompanied by a selection of Mauritian teas and scrumptious teatime treats.

Did you know? Sugar Beach’s facilities are fully interchangeable with its sister hotel – the four-star La Pirogue – located next door. Guests therefore have the advantage of enjoying the benefits that two spectacular hotels have to offer, such as a wide variety of unlimited land and water sports that are on offer free of charge to all Sugar Beach guests.

At just 22 years young, she’s already been crowned the first face of Daniel Wellington in South Africa and the face of the Johnson’s Fresh Hydration range. What’s your favourite Christmas Day food? Definitely a roast leg of lamb with my favourite Christmas cocktail, a strawberry daiquiri – it matches the theme perfectly.

Our fave local personalities of the year We caught up with our favourite Joburgand Pretoria-based influencers to find out everything from their favourite Christmas Day food to their bucket-list December holiday destination.

How are you spending the festive season? I always used to spend the festive season with my family in KZN, but this year we’re switching things up and are going to Zanzibar for a few days. Share your top three summer skincare tips. Number one: Always wear sunscreen! I never leave the house before applying Heliocare 360° Gel Oil-free SPF 50 – even on days when there’s no sun. Secondly, take cleansing very seriously because our skin overproduces oil in heat, which can result in clogged pores and breakouts. My favourite cleanser at the moment: Dermaquest’s DermaClear BHA Cleanser. Thirdly, invest in a good serum because the sun can cause a lot of damage and premature ageing. For this concern, I use Dermaquest’s Stem Cell Rebuilding Complex.

Tasted this in France for the first time and I’ve been hooked ever since on the taste of cassis. Any skincare tips for this summer? Lots of water! I also found an excellent product called Esthederm that has been such a blessing for sun-stressed skin.

Anything made with a 25° South Gin or Pathfinder Rum. I love experimenting with cocktails. My preference is usually something that isn’t overly sweet.
