e’s not called the ‘King of Outdoors’ for nothing. With one of the best views the city has to offer, we welcome the brand new Tigers Milk with open paws.

It’s got your typical pub feel, craft beer kind of vibe and we dig it. It stems all the way from the Cape, so naturally it’s super chic, super cool and super trendy. Just what Bryanston needs.

Hello Joburgers, its dude food made real good. And just because we refuse to admit defeat, we also indulged in the Jack Daniels spiked Their burgers set out to tickle your tastebuds, chocolate mousse. some of their drinks promise to be cloyingly sweet, while others are bold and brave. Let’s Shop 1, Corner of St James and Bryanston just say neither disappoint! We chowed down Drive, Bryanston on the Rockstar - beef patty smothered with 5 www.tigersmilk.co.za/bryanston cheese, bacon and guacamole. We had to try the 1 010 286 0105 Stepchild too (it’s all in the name). Classic and T @tigersmilkza basic but oh-so delicious! They also serve BBQ @tigersmilkza pork ribs, steaks, pizzas and deconstructed salads!

REAL FOOD

MADE REAL GOOD! Friends don’t let friends eat unethically

We live in a fast paced, progressive society and sometimes, we tend to neglect our health. This is where Jacksons comes in. “We only support passionate, small farmers who practice old fashion, organically grown or reared methods. We believe in food in its purest state. Educating the consumer and quality go hand in hand. We want you to know how it was grown or raised, how it was treated or farmed and where it’s from. The more the customer knows about the product the better,” says Gary Jackson, the brainchild behind this extraordinary grocery store. First and foremost, let’s take a moment for the caffeine addicts, as they’re sure to celebrate the fact that Jackson’s serves Origin Coffee. Secondly, they have their own juice bar! Thirdly, there’s a patisserie. Yes you heard us right - a scone making, croissant smelling, cookie breathing patisserie! Did we mention there’s an open rooftop space perfect for yoga sessions, birthday parties, live music… we could go on. We haven’t even gotten to the cherry on top. There’s a sit down restaurant too! Now you can shop, take a seat and order some delish, ethically sourced produce. It’s the kind of food that won’t leave feeling sluggish or bloated.

GET YOUR RUSH OF ADRENALINE AT THE ORLANDO TOWERS The two towers of the decommissioned coal-fired power station are infamous. Bungee jump off the side, do a SCAD freefall inside a tower, swing between them or abseil down the outside. There’s also 25m climbing wall (soon to be extended to 100m) and paintball available. The adventure possibilities are endless.

With looks like those, there’s no question as to why Mishqah is frequently seen on our television screens. However, it’s her latest movie role that we’re interested in hearing about… @mishqahparthiephal T @Mishqah_

Not only do you get a bit of fresh air and exercise, but you actually pay attention to what’s going on around you. There’s a variety of tours available so we highly recommend that you check it out. EAT OUT AT THE SOWETO HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTRE The in-house restaurant is called The Jazz Maniacs and was named after a popular Jazz band from the 1950’s. on’t tell us that you never get what you want, Hello Joburgers. We’re delighted to reveal that the Fugard Theatre`s smash hit musical, West Side Story will light up the stage at the Joburg Theatre… and we‘re counting down the days.

“West Side Story is one of the world’s most successful musicals of all time because, partly, the themes are so deeply universal. It is a story of love and hate, division and common humanity, to which we can all relate. The score is arguably one of the finest ever written, and when you put an orchestra of 30 together, with a sensational cast of 40, you are set for one truly glorious live theatrical experience,” explains co-producer Daniel Galloway.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story is an infamous stage productions. Set in the Upper West side of New York City in the mid-1950s, it tells the tale of two rival teenage gangs – the Jets and the Sharks, who are from different background. Taunts and jibes soon turn dark and nasty as a member of one gangs falls for the sister of a rival.

And what a cast it is! Fleur du Cap Theatre Award winner, Jonathan Roxmouth brings the role of Tony to life, while the gorgeous Lynelle Kenned (spotted in The Sound of Music) stars as Maria. Bianca le Grange returns to reprise her role of Anita. Top Billing presenter and lead actor from Janice Honeymans’ Sleeping Beauty, Christopher Jaftha leads the Sharks as Bernardo, as Zolani Shangase (who also starred in

the incredible stage production of The Lion King) takes on Chino. “There is a handful of South African producers, and it’s our first time working with The Fugard Theatre. Daniel Galloway and his team have been wonderful. I’m looking forward to working together on future productions,” explained Claire Pacariz, executive producer at Joburg City Theatres. The production comes to Jozi after having an incredibly successful stint at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. “I saw [the show] in Cape Town last year, and absolutely loved it – I worked hard with The Fugard Theatre so we could bring it to Joburg!” Pacariz revealed.

“Hours of selfless dedication has been poured in to this project by the entire team and we simply cannot wait to be on the Mandela Stage.” Words Victoria Taylor Photos Helena Fagan, Jesse Kamer

Galloway revealed that the original set concept was created by the legendary South African design Johann Engels who sadly passed away before being able to complete the work. Apparently, his one-time apprentice, Conor Murphy, stepped up to complete the vision. “The set is just spectacular! It is simple but beautifully breath-taking,” He gushes. Birrie Le Roux, one of South Africa’s most prolific costume designers, is responsible for the costumes in the production. “We were keen to not set the show in any one particular time and I think the costumes offer a perfect timelessness.” So what can you expect from this re-made classic? “A universal story, which touches your heart, told passionately and on a truly remarkable grand-scale. The set alone is worth coming to check out – not to mention the very best theatre talent this country has to offer!” Galloway reveals… and we can’t to set eyes on it. dining out BOLTON ROAD COLLECTION

I

Another new kid on the block

t’s only a few weeks old, so we decided to pop past the Bolton Road Collection building and restaurant. One of our cities most artistically rich suburbs, boasting pride and oozing flair, this space is enriched with culture and whole lot of awesomeness! This brand new gourmet restaurant and bar is a stone’s throw away from the parks. It oozes sex appeal - it’s classy, it’s sassy and it embraces a lot of excitement. There’s not much that we love more than a refurbished, redeveloped city space - especially this one. What used to be a gritty, dilapidated eyesore filled with the habitual vagrants and an air of doom and gloom has now been replaced with inventiveness and individuality. It’s a contemporary little corner that’s boosted the confidence of the area. What a wonderful addition to the neighborhood!

Moving swiftly along to the tapas style dining. Expect to share, expect to dabble, expect to be delighted. Big plates, small plates, many plates to tickle your fancy. We went all out and delved right into the Collections Short Rib Burger, which induces dreams from the very first bite. It’s served with tasty pine smoked bacon, fontina cheese, apple and tomato jam (yum) and pickles, and just when you thought your heart skipped a beat, triple cooked beef fat fries. Game over! The dishes are judiciously cooked with just the right amount of flavor and sauce. They also offer sharers between four people and you can choose from the farm, the ocean or the field. Desserts include an aerated hazelnut cake, a Tonka bean panacotta, an Eton mess (is there any other way?) and a chamomile parfait - talk about lavish and intriguing! But that’s just the thing about The Collection, it grips you and never lets go, it’s intoxicating, and because of the modern industrial style and natural rhythm of this eatery, and the fact that it overlooks the streets of Rosebank, it remains captivating. There’s also a spanking new safe and secure parking space just behind the restaurant. While you’re there, look out for Cape Town based graffiti artist Sonny, who painted an exquisitely colorful and flamboyant elephant on the wall. 2 Bolton Road, Johannesburg

So when we planned to visit this spring chicken on a cool Saturday night, we were pleasantly surprised to see how many other Joburgers had also stumbled upon this gem. Hustling and bustling and fully booked, we waited at the cocktail bar, which also uncalculatedly meant we started with cocktails. By the way, you can create your very own masterpiece. Choose your gin, blend two of your favorite garnishes and pick your tonic. We opted for The Apple Julep - a beautiful bourbon, apple, cinnamon, mint and bitters concoction. Fresh and invigorating! The Bolton Rd Spritz (aperol, bitter orange, vanilla and sparkling wine) is comforting and cool all at the same time. If you dare, the Smokey Bear is

also a desired venture - tequila, rum, pineapple, and hickory smoke, peach and pine tea. Quite a mouthful!

In the most delicious way… t the Bryanston Seasons Cuisine restaurant, the focus is on the food. Firm and decisive, the owners are extremely passionate about ethically sourced produce. They believe in produce that is from pasture to plate.

Seasons Cuisine was conceived in June 2016 when Chamilla Sanua, owner and founder of Weleda Pharmacy's, asked Glen Cronje, a regular customer, if he was still selling his organic meat. "Three hours later, they had a logo and a plan to create a restaurant serving healthy, GMO free, mainly gluten free, organic healthy food."

18

Chamilla is dedicated to this way of living, referring to it as a lifestyle. It’s second nature to her, and to be witness to someone so passionate, inevitably it all becomes rather enticing. “Our Hello Joburg • January 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

pledge is to provide our patrons with the best possible food we can. Full of good enzymes and nutrition that our bodies need to thrive.”

Is there anything more wonderful than a thin base crusted pizza? Hand-made, wood oven style pizzas, which come with the option of a Banting base. We would agree that it seems impossible to enjoy a gluten-free based pizza, but Seasons Cuisine have succeeded! The Mexican festival is lick-the-bowl fantastic. Veg based nachos with a flavorsome tomato salsa and non-GMO corn chips, all enveloped with a hat of melted cheese, avocado guac and a thick layer of cumin whipped cream. It is a heart-stopper in the best way possible!

The restaurant is classy, tidy and inviting and the food is delicious and nutritious! It’s the ideal pick-me-up location, but if you’re not up for being social they also do take-outs, stay-at-home pizza and sushi.

JANE-THERESE MULRY

Executive Chef of The Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa

J

ane-Therese is engaging and funny, and her Australian accent unmistakable. She really wanted a job where she could show case her passion, and earn money doing it. She saw becoming a chef as her passport to that opportunity.

She selected to do a prevocational six-month course so that she could start working as soon as possible. She also passed with top marks in her class, before entering her four-year apprenticeship and moving on to the Hyatt Regency in Coolum. Having only done a six-month training course, working in the kitchen was initially quite overwhelming, but she learnt quickly and thrived in what can often be classified as a tough industry.

Finally, she boarded her plane to England and spent two years with Marco Pierre White in his legendary Michelin star restaurants, returning to South Africa to open the Airport Intercontinental, before joining the Saxon for the first time in 2003 as Executive Sous Chef. She has literally traversed the globe and worked in some of the most prestigious hotels, from Bennelong at the Sydney Opera House to Qualia on Hamilton Island (recognised by Condé Nast as the best resort in the world in 2012), to North Island in the Seychelles, The Siam in Bangkok and Segera in Kenya. The list seems almost endless, and incredible. Almost as impressive as

She loves The Saxon Hotel and Spa, and the luxury market, so returning to its beautiful property, steeped in history and tradition was like returning home.

We asked her what her favourite dish on the menu at The Saxon was, and without hesitation Jane-Therese says it must be the ‘Saxon Torte’, which is world renowned and also Oprah’s favourite dish to order when she’s in residence. Having gone through many different changes and tweaks over the years with the different chefs, The Saxon Torte has stood the test of the time, and is still on the menu in all its glory. Jane-Therese lists late chef Billy Gallagher as one of her greatest inspirations to her craft, and adds that he has left a legacy behind that is far reaching and inspiring to the up and comers in the industry. “It doesn’t matter who you are. If you are good at what you do and have something to offer, people will respect you no matter what,” says Jane-Therese, wisdom which can certainly be applied to any facet of life, or any industry for that matter. 36 Saxon Road, Sandhurst 5 www.saxon.co.za 1 011 292 6000

That was twenty-eight years ago and clearly, she loves what she does. And the travel? England beckoned and Jane-Therese yielded to its call. Town, where she spent time working alongside Garth Stroebel at the Mount Nelson Hotel.

Love your T body…ology! Be your best self… naturally!

he beauty market is flooded with all sorts of products that sell us dreams, but Hello Joburgers, these au-natural products are absolutely heavenly. We guarantee that you’ll love them!

Bodyology founder and owner, Sammy Massyn, give us all the details… What inspired you to start Bodyology? I’d gone for chemical tooth whitening. The results were good, but it was expensive and painful for my sensitive gums. I’ve kept an eye on natural ingredients from a young age, so I started looking at natural alternatives to whiter teeth. I discovered Activated Charcoal and was so excited about it. The idea of having one product quickly turned into a whole range.

Blender Create a flawless make-up finish. Can be used for lotions, foundations or blushes. R150 for 2 mini blenders. R160 for 1 large blender

What makes Bodyology products different?

Blotting Paper Made from Hemp fibres, these micro sheets of absorbent paper draw up excess oil from the face. No more clogged pores or oily skin. Limited edition product for summer. R60

Konjac Sponge Made from natural Konjac plant fibres, this sponge exfoliates skin. FYI, it’s also bio-degradable! R135

Nose Strip Made with activated charcoal, which is an essential at drawing out dirt from clogged pores. An effective blackhead remover that’s gentle enough for sensitive skin. R120 contains 2 nose strips

Soap Block

Made with activated macadamia nut shell charcoal and all natural ingredients. R350

This will be your new favourite! Gentle enough for the entire family to use, but definitely effective. R100

Any expansion plans for the future? There’s so many products we can create while sticking to our desired natural ingredient list. We’re testing an Eyebrow & Eyelash Serum made from natural oils that work to thicken and lengthen brows & lashes. We’re also excited about the warmer weather so we can test our second addition, an all-natural Cacao Tanning Oil for deliciously bronzed skin – it’s 100% natural! Want to know more about Bodyology? The main ingredient in most of our products is activated charcoal. This isn’t the charcoal from your braai. It’s from coconut or macadamia nut shells. The benefits are amazing and we’ve centred our range around this phenomenal ingredient. Instead of offering a ton of ineffective products, we’ve kept the range small and effective.

leisureactivities A DAY (OR TWO)

IN JOZI

WHAT: You’ve got to start with something to eat ... and where better to start than Nelson Mandela Square. With its iconic Madiba statue, a visit to the Square gets you that ‘must have’ picture with Tata - before you decide on where to eat. There’s something for every palate from Italian cuisine at Cilantros, a hearty breakfast at Tasha’s or a legendary burger from The Hard Rock Café.

Your itinerary is sorted!

WHEN: You can eat anytime! The lights come on pretty early and stay on even later – but check the website if there is a particular spot you want to eat at.

I

n Jozi for a conference, with a day or two to cram in all the touristy stuff before the journey home? You’ve come to the right place. This is Hello Joburg’s tried and tested ‘to do’ list, and it fits into your 24 and 48 hour time-slot!

HOW LONG: That all depends on how hungry are you. You can catch a quick breakfast at Tasha’s and head out for the day or do all the tourist things first before settling into a spot like Big Mouth in the evening for a seriously good dinner.

GET FUELLED FOR THE DAY at Nelson Mandela Square

Hello Joburg • January 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

SOME ENTERTAINMENT at Montecasino or Emperors Palace WHAT: Still in town for the evening? Nothing is more typical of the ‘Joburg nightlife’ than dinner and a show. There’s no shortage of venues either, especially with Montecasino or Emperors Palace to choose from. In fact, Google Tsogo Sun too, who are well known for their ‘Show & Stay’ offerings too. WHEN: Shows and times differ so check all the respective websites, call a friend or ask the audience. 5 www.pietertoerien.co.za; www.emperorspalace.com Other places to try… The Lyric Theatre, the Market Theatre or the Roodepoort Theatre. GET OUTDOORS at the Lion and Safari Park WHAT: If you’re disappointed that there aren’t lions roaming the streets, you can still catch a glimpse of these cats. WHEN: Open daily from 8am to 9pm, with 600 hectares of wilderness in the Lanseria area, you could spend the better part of the day here. It’s an incredible opportunity to get up close to some of South Africa’s most treasured beasts. HOW LONG: You can take a Mini Safari Tour for 90 minutes or do the 45 minutes guided lion and wild dog tour. Fact is that there’s something to cater for your time-frame and preference. You can even plan your trip closer to dusk with the evening version of these tours. Factor in 90 minutes for travel time, as the park is about 50km outside of Joburg. Alternatively, spend the evening in the area as there is magnificent accommodation to give you that real getaway feel. 5 www.lionandsafaripark.com

GET SHOPPING at the Rosebank Arts and Craft Market

WIND DOWN at The View at the Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff

WHAT: You probably want to get some gifts for the jealous people back home, and a few things for yourself, as a memento of your trip.

WHAT: By now, you should be getting ready to wind down, pack your things, book out of the hotel or head towards the airport. But first… sundowners! You may also be tempted to have a bite.

WHEN: Monday to Thursday – 9am to 6pm, Friday – 9am to 7pm, Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays – 9am to 5pm HOW LONG: You’ll need at least an hour to do the Craft Market some justice. There are plenty of other stores, galleries and hot spots to visit in the area if the desire so takes you. Budget 3 hours for some retail therapy and add an hour or so for a quick gallery visit. Try Everard Read or Circa Gallery.

WHEN: Monday to Sunday – 7am to 11am for breakfast. Tuesday to Saturday – 6pm to 9.30pm for dinner. Tuesday to Saturday – 6pm to 9.30 for the bar and lounge. HOW LONG: Some of us prefer more drink and sun, and less shopping. Others prefer to shop till they drop, grab a quick coffee and say their goodbyes. So this one is up to you. 5 www.fourseasons.com/ johannesburg

5 www.rosebankartandcraftmarket. You can also wind down at… co.za The Southern Sun Hyde Park Where else to blow money? T

oo many books,” said no one ever! We think what you mean is not enough bookshelves. Yes, you can call us biased, but we absolutely love holding a fresh clump of pages. We also love a percolated mug of goodness, so we’ve combined the two. If you have an afternoon free in Jozi, be sure to get on down to one of these little nooks. If, like us, you’re book obsessed, there’s nothing more delightful than an afternoon off, reading, sipping and repeating. We’ve brought our a-game with these top five nooks to read your favourite books.

Exclusive Books in Hyde Park We all agree that something very magical happens when you read a book, especially in this location. Luxurious yet comfy, ostentatious whilst snug, it is the perfect balance. This bookstore is absolutely beautiful - it’ll take your breath away. Lilas Corner in Parktown North It’s quaint, it’s new, it’s charming and what we’re about to divulge isn’t easy, because we love to keep places like this a secret… at least for a little while. MEET BEACH BODY He’ll leave you in stitches!

W

e could barely keep it together when interviewing this funny guy! Although Beach Body is also an MC, presenter and voice over artist, his passion lies in stand-up comedy. Although, he admits that he does tend to sit through most of his performances.

What song would you have played at your funeral and why?

We saw you at Roast Comedy Club and instantly formed a crush (#justsaying!). This must happen often, right?

Eminem – I said I’m sorry mamma. I think my closet will still be a bit messy even after I’ve left the earth and mamma don’t like that!

It’s always confusing, because before I go on stage, no one ever says anything. But after the performance people just want to make me blush. It must be the jokes, not me.

Your perfect date…

When did you start to understand what it meant to be funny?

Describe your worst nightmare…

In high school, after failing Afrikaans consistently every year. It was at that point where I chose to no longer be an extra lesson student and become funny! I was already the joke in my class, it wasn’t anything new for me. Words Bianca Spinner

What makes you laugh ‘til your tummy hurts? Helium gas (I’m not a helium addict, I’ve never done it before, I promise!) There’s nothing that surpasses that laugh, honestly.

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer? I’m more of gatherer, I enjoy seeing unity amongst the people.

Custard - it’s always there for me when I’m in need of a sweet thing.

Going to another African country where they capture me as one of their own, and say that I belong there because of my skin colour. True or false - most comedians think the audience is dumber than they are? This is both true and false. We paint a picture of the audience as soon as we walk in the room, and we also gage the type of jokes they laugh at when the host is on stage warming them up before introducing the acts.

Why is it great to be a Joburger? I’m originally a Durbanite, but being a Joburger is actually that much cooler. It’s always so exciting when I take the wrong off ramp and realize that I can’t save myself for at least another 15min, because that’s how big this city is in comparison to Durban. In Durban, you don’t get lost, you just swim. Catch Beach Boy at one of these venues. The team here at Hello Joburg are looking forward to seeing Sarafina! Live at the SA State Theatre in Pretoria. Playing in the Opera Theatre from 28 February 2017, Mbongeni Ngema’s Sarafina! is a Broadway hit musical masterpiece with a combination of songs performed in the tradition of Mbaqqanga, fused with jazz, rhythm, blues and gospel. Set during the 1976 uprisings in Soweto, the story of a young school girl unfolds as she becomes embroiled in the riots and battles with South African police. As 2016 celebrated 40 years since the 1976 uprisings, this is set to be a great commemorative show and stars an amazing local cast. 5 www.computicket.com.

The critically-acclaimed hit musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert, based on the Oscarwinning hit film, heads to Montecasino’s Teatro from Friday, 28 April and features an all-South African cast.

For your inner child

Boasting an amazing array of over 500 award-winning costumes, 200 extraordinary head-dresses and a hit parade of dance floor favourites, we cannot wait to get our fabulous on!

Taking a step in a more international direction, Disney on Ice is headed to Joburg’s Ticketpro Dome on the 30th of June – and this year’s show is set to enchant old and young alike with all your favourite Disney characters. To be honest, we can’t wait! Join Mickey and Minnie and a whole host of favourites, old and new, on a magical adventure down memory lane. A witty comedy of the highest order

H

ello Joburgers, you are cordially invited, by Royal Request, to have your funny bone tickled by the world-renown Sherlock Holmes. This colourful character will be bought to life at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino this month.

the boys in check is Bronwyn Gottwald, who also appeared in The Mousetrap and Isidingo, and also happens to be the assistant writer of the show. Together, they’ll tell you an absurdly inventive tale of the one case the British Empire never wanted mentioned, or written about. Believe us when we say that you’re going to love it!

Needless to say, we’re incredibly excited. And yes, it may not be the devilishly handsome Robert Downey Jnr or charming Benedict Cumberbatch taking the stage, but that we can deal with. Simply because the cast (although small) is absolutely chock-full of talent!

Directed by multi award-winner Alan Swerdlow, Sherlock Holmes and the Curse of the Queens Diamond promises to be full of witty jibes, intrigue and suspense. This incredibly funny stage play will take you with the wise-cracking characters as they go on a mission to find a rather Royal piece of jewellery – that the palace has definitely not misplaced – of course! You’ll love every minute of this clever, chuckleworthy comedy – it’s the ideal way to relieve some New Year stress.

Award winning theatrical actor Robert Fridjhon (who graced the stage in Agatha Christie`s The Mousetrap) joins the equally talented Craig Jackson, who is best known for his film and television work. Keeping

3 things you didn’t know about Sherlock The author of Sherlock Holmes, Author Conan Doyle, also penned science fiction romances, like The Lost World (1912), which went on to inspire Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, and later Steven Spielberg’s film, The Lost World. Doyle also reportedly grew bored of Sherlock’s character and wanted to kill him off a mere two years after introducing him to the world. We’re pretty glad that didn’t happen.

The character has been on the big screen for centuries - starting with the short silent film, Sherlock Holmes Baffled, dating from around 1900. Hello Joburg • January 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

MAGIC ON YOUR

DOORSTEP

Idyllic gardens, luxurious massages and deluxe accommodation make paradise

B

e weary when visiting Morrells Boutique Estate, because an overnight stay can result in wanting more and more and dare we say it, even more. Neat, quiet, elegant, sophisticated and regal, Morrells is pure magic.

This palatial property boasts romance and lends itself so effortlessly to a world filled with splendor and glamour. There’s something oh-sospecial about Morrells… it’s not just another regular boutique hotel, but rather a grand memory, an unforgettable experience cemented with a delicious cacophony of tranquility and harmony. Joburgers, there’s no need to escape hundreds of kilometers abroad. Rather opt to getaway around the corner for a weekend and escape those city woes. We were invited to spend the night and a fairytale ensued. We were booked in the honeymoon suite, which oozes romance and country style enchantment. Expect vintage charm, spacious rooms equipped with one of kind pieces, reading nooks and gorgeous Victorian baths. There are two parts of accommodation - either inside the farmhouse or the manor house. Our room was nestled in the farmhouse, and we couldn’t imagine anywhere safer. Built in the 1800s and tucked under the olive orchards, the venue is mesmerizing. With a flirtation of pink hydrangeas to the left and a courtship of roses to the right, you’re captured by the surrounding beauty - which is certainly one of this locations greatest assets. The dreamiest element of this property has to be the luxe spa. The spa is intimate, reminiscent of a French boudoir, and there’s only one treatment room for one couple. It’s cozy and picturesque, so booking a full body massage each is absolutely paramount. Cleanse yourself of stress and succumb to this very special treatment. The masseuses are exceptional at their craft, ensuring you have only the very best treatments. You’ll never want it to end! Morrells knows the importance of precision, and it shows in the dining room. Spectacular towering crystal chandeliers hang above, roses are freshly picked from the garden and the table is set for two. Indulging over a glass of red, the cuisine is a combination of delicate flavors and tantalizing textures. We were peppered with the Saumon Durci Liquide - delicate parcels of liquid cured Norwegian salmon, served with pickled fennel ricotta cheese and macerated red onion. For mains we were serenaded by the succulent grilled Kingklip Bisque, which was served over a giant ball of couscous cake. The cuisine is handsomely presented and filled with flavor and flair. We loved every minute of it!

WE’RE HOOKED! W

The best afternoon tea in Magaliesburg

hat happens when two titans come together: an exquisite five star hotel and an exclusive high tea? We’ll tell you what happens, an explosion of excellence. There isn’t much more we would love to do over a weekend than sip on Rooibos tea amongst the evergreen gardens at De Hoek Country Hotel. This acclaimed hotel is in a league of its own, boasting pristine lawns, picturesque surroundings, pampered ducks and some of the finest looking chickens you’ll ever lay eyes on. It’s only an hour outside of Johannesburg and it’s the ideal weekend retreat. The cuisine is outstanding and they pride themselves on unmatched ingredients and delicate flavors. It’s a perfect setting for any occasion - a birthday celebration, a romantic anniversary, a girlfriend’s getaway or even a bachelorette. It ticks all the right boxes, especially their high tea experience. It’s known to be a hug in a cup, it’s been called a peacemaker, a soother and it makes everything better. It has been proven that wherever tea is, there is love. We’re happy to share that De Hoek has designed a high tea that’s set outdoors on a lovely table setting with handpicked roses as company. They’ve pulled out all the stops with this. The roving platter is bought to your table by the Chef himself, with a glass of bubbles, of course! The Chef has whipped up a few firm favourites like the fragile scones with jam and velvety cream, and the decadent chocolate lamingtons - squares of seductive sponge cake coated in an indulgent layer of chocolate and rolled in coconut bits. Mouths watering yet? Then there’s delicacies like macaroons, an irresistible Pastel de Nata (Portuguese custard tart) and a beautiful parcel of watermelon and goats cheese cream. But wait there’s more - the savory treats include mini pastrami rolls, luxurious trout and cream cheese on rye and egg mayo sarmies. Ten out of ten! Teas and coffees are included in the price too.

Words Bianca Spinner

Once you’re satisfied, book yourselves a night’s stay because you deserve it. Treat yourself to a five-course signature De Hoek dinner and luxury accommodation in a superior suite. High tea is R325 per person and is available on Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm.

ooking for somewhere out of the ordinary, beautiful, a break from all things modern and drab? Webersburg Wine Estate has the number one slot on our list of places to go, and it’s not difficult to see why… Besides being nestled in gorgeous Stellenbosch, Webersburg is a 5-star stop that will transport you back to the 18th century. This venue is the perfect combination of romance and traditional Cape Dutch-style accommodation, with just a hint of modern living in the wine lands. Yes, we said wine, and if that hasn’t sold you, keep reading.

Picture rolling lawns of lush green grass, rows upon rows of vino making tress and not one, but four stunning spots to choose from. You’ll be stuck trying to choose between the Manor House (built in 1786) with authentic yellow wood floors and the Jonkerhuis - an original Cape Dutch building built in 1796. But hang on, there’s also the Owners Cottage, originally the Horse Stable that has been transformed into a magnificent little cottage and a number of Vineyard Cottages settled amongst the vineyards with breath-taking dam and mountain views. Spoilt for choice, we know. Our favourite part - Webersburg is a boutique winery with winemaking history that dates back 220 years, with the original cellar built in 1796. They make fabulous vino right there, and if

you’re lucky, you’ll get to try a bottle (or two, or three…). The limited selection made on-site is simply divine. This spectacular spot is also the ideal venue for conferences, celebrations and that perfect cape wedding. The majestic views of the mountains and vineyards create the ideal backdrop for any celebration, wouldn’t you agree? The Webersburg team is dedicated to create our ideal event, and will focus on your personal and corporate hospitality needs. There are tailored functions and conference packages for up to 200 attendees with options of accommodation throughout the year available. Needless to say, this place is an absolute winner. make you want to lie in bed all day long. The Classique White Duvet Cover (from R1570) and fitted sheet (from R1320) are an investment people… totally worth the splurge! Speaking of splurges, we’re a little in love with the 100% pure Egyptian Cotton gown (from R805). Cool enough for summer yet luxuriously soft and oh-so-comfortable! It’s the perfect item to slip on after a shower, or just for those days when you’re lounging around. Did we mention they’re unisex? Matching gowns, anyone? 5 www.linendrawer.co.za T @LinenDrawer

7 minutes with Andisiwe Dweba

If Andisiwe’s name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen it (and her) on Generations the Legacy. Did we mention she’s also a voice-over artist? When she’s not on the big screen, she’s lending a helping hand to the community.

What was it like growing up in the Eastern Cape? The coast is my favourite place to be, so growing up in the Eastern Cape was tranquil and peaceful. I had a happy childhood! What have you always wanted, and did you get it? I have always wanted to be on television and, yes now I’m on the biggest channel in Sub-Saharan Africa. What are you working on at the moment? Besides being in studio everyday shooting, I’m working on two charity events for the elderly and orphans. It’s important to give back. What’s the most amazing role you have ever had? I once played a high school bully. I hated bullies when I was back in School, so playing one made me confront and understand those type of people. They aren’t always bad, but they are troubled. Tell us about the motivational speaking you do for schools… I’m very passionate about young people and peer pressure because I have two teenage brothers who look up to me and think the world of me! I share a lot of ideas with them and they always motivate me to give advice to others, which is why I do what I do. I also think being in the public eye, I have a platform of talking about important issues and have people listen, so we can educate and converse about important social issues. What is your favourite outdoor pastime? Hiking, and long walks on the beach.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? Be fearless and fierce in chasing your dreams. T @siwedweba
