Indian cuisine is so unique and particular about its ingredients that the flavor is always distinct and authentic. Bombay Blues Restaurant follows this taste adventure, as there is great importance as to every ingredient used and chosen for each dish. The beautiful fragrances and smells from the spices are pivotal and flavorings of each spice are specific. Some of the favorites are chili pepper, turmeric, ginger, coriander and garlic. On Saturday the 6th of July Hello Johannesburg Magazine in conjunction with Turffontein Racecourse and Soul Candi Records hosted a spectacular race day event never to be forgotten. Joburger’s had the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of the Vodacom Durban July, right here in Jozi. A never before done concept and on a major scale however they were able to pull off the event even to the last intricate detail. The idea behind the Joburg July was to allow Joburger’s to be included in the races at the Durban July on the screens as well as appreciate the live races at the Turffontein Racecourse.

ELLO JOBURGERS!

It was in the year of 1956 when women from all over South Africa marched to the Union Building in Pretoria to present the Prime Minister with their petition against the carrying of passes by women. Thus August commemorates every single woman who fought for that freedom, so in the month of August let us all celebrate the special women in our lives. And what better way to do that, then referring to the Hello Johannesburg magazine. Consequently, the team at Hello Johannesburg has taken the liberty of summing up all the best that Joburg has to offer during this special month. The calendar informs you on all the very best theatre productions and concerts taking place and I recommend 5 of the best, so try them out. The Saxon Hotel has launched a new restaurant; The Qunu Grill which exudes the hotel’s African heritage and would be the perfect place to spoil the exceptional woman in your life. After watching one of the many wonderful shows at the Joburg Theatre, their new restaurant Stages is a must visit. With an extensive and tasty menu, a marvellous cocktail catalogue, and an excellent wine list, Stages is the perfect spot for the impromptu after show drinks or a pre-dinner date. Since we are in the last month of winter, Indian cuisine is the perfect treat to indulge in. Bombay Blues, which is located in Rosebank serves up delicious Tandoori Takari and the tastiest Jhinga Goa curry. For those who missed our event, The Joburg July Day, which was held in conjunction with Turffontein is beautifully elaborated on, together with stunning images of our fabulous guest. And finally we have an incredible competition, two lucky couples can stand the chance of winning an amazing getaway at the luxurious Indaba Hotel, so page through our travel section to find out more details. Hopefully I have given you a hint on what to expect this month and a few awesome ideas on how to treat the remarkable women in your life. #lovejozi Best Wishes,

BOMBAY BLUES By: Bianca Maletsky

I

‘Indian cuisine reflects a 5000year history of various groups and cultures interacting with the subcontinent, leading to diversity of flavors and regional cuisines found in modern-day India.’ Indian cuisine is so unique and particular about its ingredients that the flavor is always distinct and authentic.

“THE BEAUTIFUL FRAGRANCES AND SMELLS FROM THE SPICES ARE PIVOTAL AND FLAVORINGS OF EACH SPICE ARE SPECIFIC.” Moreover the ambience is delightful and although the restaurant has not competed, renovation wise, with the rest of rosebank, the look and feel is original, comfortable and extremely hygienic. The details are stylish and the expansive space is filled with mosaic lanterns, which are absolutely gorgeous. The furniture is genuine and although it may not be modern, rather there is a sense of history. Its certainly ultra stylish yet not opulent or indulgent.

“INDIAN CUISINE IS SO UNIQUE AND PARTICULAR ABOUT ITS INGREDIENTS THAT THE FLAVOR IS ALWAYS DISTINCT AND AUTHENTIC.”

“REFLECTS THE WAY FOR PEOPLE TO CONNECT AND BOND WITH ONE ANOTHER AND THIS REMAINS PARAMOUNT TO BOMBAY BLUES.”

While the spices and aromas of each ingredient is significant so too is the culture and religion within the food. Indian cuisine is always true and reliable to its roots. The sharing of food within Indian culture is prominent and reflects the way for people to connect and bond with one another and this remains paramount to Bombay Blues. A perfect location for a dreamy dinner for 2, a celebration, mingling with friends or a bonding session with family.

Furthermore, Bombay Blues with its authentic feel and elegant touch, offers a great selection of dishes, from the Tandoori Takari- assorted vegetables delicately marinated and grilled in the tandoor oven to the mouth watering Spinach and lamb. The Jhinga Goa curry – fresh prawns simmered in a gravy of coconut milk and flavored with turmeric, ginger and green chili, and the traditional Indian cottage cheese cooked in a rich tomato and cashew gravy are sensational. A favorite is the

Machhi Tikka- tender chunks of fish, seasoned, spiced and grilled to perfection. The food is outstanding and the chef ensures a hearty, wholesome, tasty meal cooked with heart and soul…

“THE DETAILS ARE STYLISH AND THE EXPANSIVE SPACE IS FILLED WITH MOSAIC LANTERNS, WHICH ARE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.” As I sat down with the chef to pick his brain about the ideas and savors behind the Indian cuisine at Bombay Blues, I found myself intrigued… Sajith the chef exclaims that the most important ingredients for a curry dish are Cardamom, Bay leafs and cinnamon sticks - for their medicinal values. And his ultimate ingredient to work with is Turmeric powder – as he says it adds value to every dish. When it approaches his favorite sweet treat, which is also a treasured item on the menu: the Gajar ka Halwa is his ultimate delicacy. It is made with Carrot and dried fruits. Additionally Sajith exclaims that his relationship with food is one of great adventure.

“THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING AND THE CHEF ENSURES A HEARTY, WHOLESOME, TASTY MEAL COOKED WITH HEART AND SOUL…” “I am intrinsically connected to Indian food. I love all kinds of spicy food. One of my hobbies is to try local cuisine when I travel. Food tells the story of the local culture and environment.” It is evident that Sajith loves his career and devotes his life to what he does. When Sajith does get some time off he likes to explore the new developments in Joburg and enjoy the vast array of cuisine we have available to us in Joburg. And so Sajith’s affection and appetite for food becomes clear. And because of this passion you are guaranteed delightful, vibrant, traditional Indian dishes that can be shared with loved ones and appreciated wholly. he Meaning Behind Parc Fermé Parc Fermé, literally meaning “closed park” in French, is a secure area at a motor racing circuit wherein the cars are driven back to the pits post-race. For example, according to the FIA Formula One regulations, the area must be sufficiently large and secure so as to prevent unauthorised access to the cars, while allowing technical checks to take place.

“PARC FERMÉ, LITERALLY MEANING “CLOSED PARK” IN FRENCH” Cars must be placed in parc fermé within three and a half hours from the end of qualifying until five hours before the start of the race formation lap. This suits Parc Fermé Restaurant perfectly since it hosts all the hottest cars right outside its doorstep with exclusive parking bays being reserved for the premier hotel guests, residents and their cars. THE PANINI BROTHERS Come and say Ciao

T

he story of The Panini Brothers is pretty simple, The Panini Brothers was founded in 2013 by Italian brothers and a good friend. The concept was aimed at mimicking the classic Italian concept of coffee bars and delis.

“THE CONCEPT WAS AIMED AT MIMICKING THE CLASSIC ITALIAN CONCEPT OF COFFEE BARS AND DELIS.” Their passion for good food and aromatic coffee stems from a very typical Italian upbringing, and this is clearly evident by who runs the kitchen. The kitchen is run by their feisty and passionate mamma and godmother, Aka: Mamma Rosaria and Zia Patrizia. You don’t get much more Italian than these women, as they were born and raised in Rome. Their philosophy is comprised of the following words: Fresh, Simple, Home-Made Italian Goodness And their philosophy is echoed in the manner in which the food is prepared. Additionally, The Panini Bothers is not your typical run of the mill Café. If you know anything about Italian people – you will know that their love is in the food that they make and spreading that love gives them the greatest of joy, thus their customers become part of the family There is a method to all the madness and without a doubt you can walk into Panini Brothers and Zia Patrizia

It’s even harder to believe that it’s been four years since the band recorded their hugely successful, SAMA award-winning album Collected Memories. A lot has changed since then. Members have come and gone and the band’s sound has moved from straight-up, radio-hit rock to a place far darker and more daring than even they could have imagined. Zebra & Giraffe’s latest album, The Wisest Ones, is the result. ‘We know some of the songs from this album won’t be played on radio, and to a certain degree with Collected Memories and The Inside, I always worried about a song’s commercial appeal,’ says front man and lyricist, Greg Carlin.

“With The Wisest Ones we really just wrote songs that felt right - songs that almost needed to get out.” ‘With The Wisest Ones we really just wrote songs that felt right - songs that almost needed to get out. Whether they had a catchy chorus, or a chorus at all didn’t really matter. ‘That’s not to say there isn’t a lot of catchy stuff on this album; there is. Memories and six from The Inside, Zebra & Giraffe are ready for the next chapter.

With Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, A Perfect Circle and Marilyn Manson having a significant influence on the mood of the album, The Wisest Ones showcases Zebra & Giraffe’s desire to experiment while continuing to solidify their roots as one of South Africa’s most prominent alternativerock groups. Which is exactly why the band connected with US-based mix engineer, Mark Needham, who has worked with both seasoned performers, such as Chris Isaak, as well as upand-coming artists.

‘It’s been about six years since I wrote some of the first tracks for Collected Memories and as a writer I definitely think I’ve matured and learnt a lot,’ says Greg. ‘As players, we have all grown and learned about our strengths and weaknesses. With every album that passes you learn new things. The lyrics are a lot more honest on this album and really reflect what I was going through when I wrote them.’

With nominations streaming in and singles on continuous radio rotation, it’s no wonder Zebra & Giraffe were chosen to perform in front of 60 000 people alongside Oasis and Snow Patrol at the Coca-Coca Zero Fest. Later in 2009, The Killers picked Zebra & Giraffe to support them on the South African leg of their world tour, where the band performed to over 50 000 people. This year, Zebra & Giraffe will focus on achieving success on both local and international levels. With a local album launch tour planned for September this year, the band will also be heading to the USA in October and Europe in early 2013. THE JOBURG JULY DAY A day at the track, by Bianca Maletsky

O

n Saturday the 6th of July Hello Johannesburg Magazine in conjunction with Turffontein Racecourse and Soul Candi Records hosted a spectacular race day event never to be forgotten. Joburger’s had the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of the Vodacom Durban July, right here in Jozi. The best news is that it was wallet-friendly. The Classic tickets went for a fair R200 and the Anouchka VIP tickets went for a cool R1200.

“Joburger’s had the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of the Vodacom Durban July, right here in Jozi.” A never before done concept and on a major scale however they were able to pull off the event even to the last intricate detail. The idea behind the Joburg July was to allow Joburger’s to be included in the races at the Durban July on the screens as well as appreciate the live races at the Turffontein Racecourse. While a select few of the Joburg residents have privilege of attending the Vodacom Durban July each year, most are only able to watch the event live on Television or hear about it. The expense of travel, and accommoda-

tion is also astronomical and so why should only the select few get to indulge and paint the town red? Hello Johannesburg Magazine gave each and every Joburg resident the opportunity to attend the Hello Joburg July.

“they were able to pull off the event even to the last intricate detail.” Us Joburger’s immersed ourselves in the equestrian culture and descended upon the thrill of a day at the races. Joburger’s earned themselves the title of royal fashionistas and merely followed in the footsteps of the elite. Even the challenging accessory that was placed on heads such as Kate Middleton and Princess Beatrice seemed to be a hit at the Joburg July- the fascinator. The Great Gatsby themed fashion was everywhere and the party people were ready to mingle and be apart of this ultimate experience. Turffontein received a glamour injection and some serious charming outfits were embraced. Moreover the design and décor of the private room was planned from scratch. What started out as a blank canvas was transformed into a genius moment of beauty, elegance and contemporary furnishings. More brilliantly created was the entrance into the room, hung were white

draping, which were decorated with finesse and one couldn’t help but feel like a superstar. Guests had a choice of two function areas. Firstly a classic area with stunning white leather furniture creating a Voguish feel, outside seating and bar area and tote betting facilities. Secondly the premium Anouchka Vodka VIP with modern furniture, private VIP lounge area, private tote betting facilities, a generous, appetizing 5 course buffet, the talented Thirst Bar Service including waiters and most luxuriously The Pyramid Day Spa.

“Turffontein received a glamour injection and some serious charming outfits were embraced.” Furthermore the guests were entertained from 11am till 11pm. There’s nothing better than socializing and making the rounds with friends in

the daytime, of course getting in a bet…or two… or three and then partying up a storm with the sensation that are Beatarmy, Kid Fonque, Shorty on Sax and DJ SoulSista’s addictive tunes. The event was unlike no other, one of a kind, a unique and rare experience for the town of Jozi and my oh my what an accomplishment it turned out to be! A victory for all who were involved and an overall triumph for Johannesburg. As Hello Joburg Magazine prides itself on bringing together the hottest, hippest and most happening information and events to its readers, they definitely served up a grand slam. Whether you are a horse racing fan or merely wanted to be a social butterfly, each and every individual seemed delighted and rejoiced in a full day of splendor, delicious food, cocktails, betting and entertainment which will last for a lifetime of memories.

Ford South Africa offers these 10 real world tips for motorists looking to lower fuel costs but still keep driving exciting: 1) Get your kit off. The kit on the roof that is. 2) Ensure your tyres are up to the correct pressure. Such a simple task can have a massive impact on fuel usage as well as handling. It’s also safe. Low tyre pressure can cause blowouts. 3) What is in your boot? Weight can be another factor in increasing fuel usage affecting the vehicle’s handling. Unload unnecessary items from your car. Some people also never entirely fill their tank, opting to fill only 60 or 70 per cent since a full tank is actually quite heavy itself. 4) Don’t rubberneck! We are all tempted to slow down and have a look at what caused the accident on the side of the road. When you slow down to do so, you’re causing others, in some cases hundreds of others, to slow down for no reason. All those cars then hit the pedal to speed back up, including you, wast-

Always look ahead and get a good idea of what is about to happen in the next few seconds. Minimise your reactionary braking, or aggressive acceleration. Smooth out your driving. 6) Don’t drive angry. Easier said than done, especially in heavy traffic. But angry driving burns more fuel. Burning out at the traffic lights or weaving in and out of cars can all mean heavy acceleration and heavy fuel use. 7) Cruise. Using cruise control on the motorway and setting a constant speed can save fuel. 8) Are you in tune? Would your engine sing well enough to win an automotive Idols? A wrong turn here and there means extra kilometers behind the wheel and that means you burn more fuel. Rushing out to the shops three or four times a weekend also impacts your pocket. Draw up a shopping list and ensure you complete all your errands in one trip. A carefully planned journey can save you precious litres. 10) Lastly, your car doesn’t need to be boring either. Case in point the new Ford Fiesta ST with EcoBoost is Ford’s fastest-yet production Fiesta ST. At the same time, it’s also the most fuel efficient with a combined cycle fuel economy rate of 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres.
