f Urbanologi was a person, it would be one of those effortlessly cool guys who knows all the best places to go and never puts a foot wrong. As it is, this restaurant is destined to become one of Jozi’s must-go spots. Half the reason for its allure lies in its one-of-a-kind location inside the Mad Giant brewery – think giant steel vats hissing away on craft brew, edgy exposed services and gritty urban décor.

You’ll probably need a guide to take you through the menu, as it can be a little confusing at first, but you can expect Asian street food served tapas style. Dishes are arranged on the menu according to the way they’re cooked (steamed, cured, frozen and so on – there’s also a long list of vegetarian choices), and you’re encouraged to choose one or two dishes from each. cover feature When the need for a cocktail grabs you, give in to the Thirst More than just a mobile bar service

“Thirst has been providing a turn-key solution for events across the board for over a decade now” culture has become part of the fabric of our daily lives, becoming more than just the morning boost you need to get your day going. Baristas’ fare has turned into an art form of its own because the coffee doesn’t have to only taste good these days, but it also needs to be a feast for the eyes.

Thirst has been providing a turn-key solution for events across the board for over a decade now. This has meant that they’ve had to keep a keen eye on industry trends while at the same time broadening their offering. Whether they’re catering for a wedding or company function, or at the Neighbourgoods Market or at a massive concert, these guys have been the industry frontrunners straight out the starting block.

Much like with their bartenders and mixologists, Thirst trains their baristas from the ground up to an international standard of service. Having your latte or cappuccino, or even a simple strong espresso, is now de rigueur at most events, and these guys make it an experience – a talk-worthy one at that.

When we say “these guys”, we’re talking about the brains behind the genius that is Thirst. Rael Lasarow and Clyde Ackerman work together like a well-oiled machine and are the kind of entrepreneurial team that most of us can only dream of. They have developed an ability to drive each other to creatively think outside the box while keeping a steady hand on logistics. Priding themselves on going the extra mile for clients, Clyde and Rael have a way of putting the most nervous clients at ease. After all, what gets consumed at an event not only reflects on their clients, but on their reputation as an industry supplier, too. The continual repeat business they generate is a testament to their professional ethos.

8

Expansion is paramount to most business models, and Thirst is no exception. Coffee Hello Joburg • August 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

While their entrepreneurial success is impressive, they are also heavily invested in training the local workforce, which is something all business owners can learn from. The number of staff at Thirst who’ve been able to create careers for themselves speaks to how ethically committed Thirst is as a company. Rael and Clyde are not only at the top of their games when it comes to being business savvy, but they are also keenly aware of what our country needs. This goes well beyond an amazing cocktail; it’s all about giving back as part of their business model. If you take a look at Thirst, their track record speaks for itself – they are a model that entrepreneurs across South Africa should be emulating. If we could have you taste their cocktails right off the pages of our magazine, we would. Augmented Reality is taking over Joburg!

A

t some point in the past month, you’ve likely had someone walk into you or you’ve had to side-step a 20-something-year-old holding their phone in the air or pointing it at the ground. While you’d be forgiven for thinking the world has gone mad, you should be getting in on the crazy! Augmented Reality is a type of technology that superimposes a computer-generated image over your real world view in order to change what you’re looking at. It’s taken over Jozi, and here are my three favourite apps that have employed the tech to improve user experience. SNAPCHAT Snapchat is the favourite app of Generation Z – it’s so popular that even Facebook tried to buy it! The app allows you to use crazy filters on your face to make funny videos or photos, and it’s where the famous face swap came about. Our favourite Snapchat feature is that it lets you add a host of Johannesburg overlays to your snaps.

POKÉMON GO The craziest mobile game to take over the planet is creating chaos in Jozi, too. PokÊmon Go uses your GPS and camera, and puts PokÊmons in your path and gyms in your neighbourhood so that you can train your creatures in the hope of defeating gym leaders. It has kids – and adults – walking for kilometres trying to catch ’em all. While it might seem strange, it’s so much fun that you’ll forget you live in a world without PokÊmon. H

Buying a diamond for investment purposes is different to purchasing a beautiful piece of jewellery. For instance, a diamond that would look magnificent in a necklace might not be appropriate as an investment. It's unlikely that a diamond purchased over the counter will make a solid investment. That said, once you have purchased a diamond as an investment, you can always have it set in a piece of jewellery without this affecting its value - although selecting a well-known designer, recognised for his craftsmanship, will of course enhance the piece. D

Maira Koutsoudakis from LIFE Grand Café

oing one thing that scares her every day, Entrepreneur, Restaurateur, internationally acclaimed Interior Architect and Eco-enthusiast Maira Koutsoudakis, is CEO of the Life Group of Companies and Life Interiors I Architecture I Strategic Design, as well as the beauty and brains behind the collection of LIFE Grand Cafés and Collection Stores. Using her creative genius to create something even greater, Maira understands the business of designing a dining experience, and over the last 17 years, together with her engineer husband and business partner, John Koutsoudakis, has built a brand that has revered her as a refreshing restaurateur on the Joburg food frontier. When did your love affair with design and dining begin? I was born a designer and believe that, Greeks have olive oil instead of blood coursing through their veins. We originate from a legendary culinary culture so it is an intrinsic part of life and is something to which business-savvy Mediterranean entrepreneurs find themselves naturally drawn.

By Taryn Louch

Other than the fact that every meal is a grand encounter, how did the name LIFE Grand Café (LGC) come about? The name LIFE Grand Café represents the character of our largest restaurant brand – with all of its’ magic and mundane moments, its’ everyday energy and all things that make up the well-lived life. It is about lifestyle – or rather the style of life. Your libation on the LGC menu is so perfectly poetic – apart from this, what sets your menu apart from any other menu? Our menu, like the physical journey through our beautiful stores, is an adventure through theatre bars where the fresh preparation and visual excitement of the meal creation is all part of the dining experience. What style of food can we enjoy at LGC? Simple sustenance, wholesome simplicity

and decadent delights. Expect the freshest Mediterranean food with great provenance from passionate purveyors - simply prepared and elegantly enjoyed. What’s the key ingredient in every meal served at LGC that can’t be bought in a grocery store? The best quality olive oil! Use one word to describe the ambience of LGC? One word?! Aaargh… Delicious. What people may not know about you, is that you’re a grammarzon. So, no spelling mistakes in your menus? Despite having an honours in English Literature as well as 8 restaurants and bars in three cities, a design studio and 400 staff… the odd typo has crept in to my horror! What do all the employees who work at LGC have in common? Authentic drive and passion for our brand. What is your greatest reward as a restaurateur? Growing people, as well as seeing our new brands being so enthusiastically embraced by our patrons. Speaking of growing people, what is the importance of a mentor and who is your mentor? Due to my career in Interior Architecture and Design, I have luckily worked with remarkable entrepreneurs and soulful developers – such as Jochen Zeitz and Sabine Plattner, who, through their living example of success and sustainable development, have inspired my own vision of thoughtful evolution.

You started out with Haute Cuisine. If any chef in the world could prepare a meal for you, who would it be? Ferran Adria. We shared the stage at Design Indaba, and his humility, originality and perseverance awed me; but I think I would get in there and cook with him! So, what makes a great kitchen? Love. The preparation of food is really the culinary expression of love; for the produce, the process and the people for whom you are cooking. What's the first thing that catches your eye in a restaurant? The energy. Whether it is a small beach cabana bar or an elegant urban experimental place - energy is everything. You’re well-versed and well-travelled, so I have to ask - chicken or beef ? Neither! Fish for the win! Other than at LGC, where can we find you dining in the City of Gold? On a Saturday, you can find me at The Potato Shed in Newtown Junction, and on a Thursday at The Gentlemen’s Arthouse. Next course? A sexy spot on the water’s edge in Cape Town. H 5 www.lifegrandcafe.com 5 www.gentlemensarthouse.com 5 www.thepotatoshed.com

What is the first meal you ever prepared? Sand meatballs on the beach in Greece, as a child. At a restaurant, I would pay almost anything for…. Great food. Hot interiors. Sexy music. Hello Joburg • August 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Chef Brett Ladds

Of presidents and parsnips

Brett is the first to admit that his life has been one of serendipitous adventures. Take his entry into the hospitality industry, for example: “I was sitting in a café with my mother, wondering what I should do with my life. I took a look around me and said, ‘Well, I guess I’d better become manager of this place.’” Although his climb up the ladder wasn’t quite as straightforward as that, it was enviably easy. Brett spent a few days waiting tables, and when some kitchen staff didn’t show up for work one day, he simply took his place behind the stove – with no culinary training beyond the Saturday night steak he cooked occasionally with his dad. “I don’t know how to describe it. Cooking just made sense to me.”

18

His gift was soon noticed by Christian Michel, former executive chef for South Africa’s presidency. At the time, Brett had moved on to establish his own catering company, and Christian noted Brett’s growing reputation and offered him free training. Brett admits that, initially, he was hooked by the fact that it was free, explaining, “It was only later that I Hello Joburg • August 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

successes as he led various catering companies and wedding venues to prize-winning status – but constantly at the back of his mind was the goal of opening his own restaurant.

It was on one of their training days that Brett caught his big break. He and Christian had just settled down for a crayfish meal when Christian’s phone – an old-fashioned red model – rang. “It was like something straight out of Austin Powers,” Brett says. A muttered conversation ensued, then Christian reported that, as a Frenchman and therefore politically neutral, he had been invited to reopen the state guesthouse for the newly appointed ruling ANC party, and Brett was to come with him.

The moment finally came in January, when he and his wife Tracey were sharing a drink with his now business partner, Shane. “Shane put the idea forward, and after one beer it seemed like a great plan. After three beers, it seemed like something we would do the very next day.” In reality, it took two weeks to get a lease. Chefs@566 opened in June to great buzz, with patrons attracted not only by Ladd’s prestigious pedigree but also the restaurant’s unique set-up: a mixture of industrial cool – with exposed beams and concrete floors – and high glamour, the highlight being the open kitchen. What will strike you most about this theatre of cookery is that there are no Ramsay-style antics and shouting; Brett prides himself on running a kitchen filled with laughter. That’s how he’s handled the stress of cooking for a thousand diners at a time – the more heat that’s on him, the funnier he gets.

Most of us can only dream of what it would have been like spending every day in Nelson Mandela’s company. “It’s been said so many times, but you had to meet him to appreciate his kindness,” Brett reminisces. He tells of cringing as his young kids ran riot in the halls of the guesthouse, only to be smilingly told not to worry about their high jinks – “They’re just children,” the great man told his chef.

It goes hand in hand with his philosophy that food is joy, and feeding people is satisfying. That’s what you’ll find at Chefs@566: food that’s been eaten by kings and queens – like the most popular item on the menu, fillet crème, which Brett first created using leftovers from a state dinner – at a great price (the most expensive meal is R180) and a fabulous atmosphere. H

Brett stayed on at the guesthouse, and catered for Mandela’s successor, Thabo Mbeki, until the end of 1999. Then followed a slew of

Beating the Winter Slump

I

t’s the final stretch – it may not feel like it yet, but those warm summer months are on their way. However, we still have a few more weeks of icy cold fronts, dark mornings and early sunsets to get through, so here are a few tips to keep you motivated – and since it’s Women’s month, this one is for the ladies.

Changes in weather, temperature and light have physical and psychological effects on your body that can, in turn, have a major impact on your overall health. If you know what these effects are and how to use them to your advantage, you can make the most of the remains of winter. Your immune system With the constant change in temperature, it’s so easy to come down with flu. One brief minute of leaving the gym without a jersey, and voilà, you’re woman down for a week. Make sure to take a daily dose of vitamin C (Biogen C-Ester Plus) and a multi-vitamin (Biogen Multivitamin Plus), and look after your body by sticking to the following:

Keep warm Being cold, and especially shivering, depresses the immune system because your body’s resources go towards raising your temperature rather than warding off germs. When exercising, use moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics (such as nylon and polyester). Boost your energy Feeling more tired in the winter months isn’t just psychological; darkness prompts our bodies to produce the sleep hormone melatonin, making us feel fatigued. Add an electrolyte supplement to your morning routine to help prevent this. Don’t overeat People are more energetic earlier in the day, so make sure all your most demanding tasks are done in the morning and early afternoon, and try to exercise later in the day to boost your energy levels. Make sure to eat protein at breakfast (think eggs with low-fat cheese) and lunch to stay mentally alert. To assist your protein intake, throw in a good ol’ shake as well (Biogen Diet Fuel).

gets dark in the late afternoon. Eating healthy carbs also helps scare off cravings for the “bad” kind (like cookies and cakes). Remember to unwind With the hustle and bustle of work and trying to balance your family and career, it’s tough finding time to relax. Research shows that people who engaged in mindfulness techniques, such as gentle yoga and meditation, have lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol (experts think high levels make us more vulnerable to illness).

WIN!

Stand a chance to WIN this awesome Women's Day hamper from Biogen, valued at over R700. All you have to do is answer this simple question: What has replaced the sugar in the brand-new Biogen Diet Fuel? Send your name, age and answer to hellosa@spinnercom.com to enter. Good luck! Competition closes 30 August 2016. Winners will be announced on 5 September 2016 via email.

At dinner, have healthy carbs (whole grains, like brown rice), which are what your body craves when it

Words Brett Palframan

Come clean Be a germophobe! It pays to be obsessive about keeping your hands clean because they’re a major way germs get into our bodies. Here’s an important tip on technique: when washing your hands, be sure to lather away from the stream of water, not under the tap – it’s the friction between the soap and skin that dislodges germs.

Drink up Getting plenty of H2O might help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking hold in your body once you’ve been exposed to them. Staying hydrated also helps your system distribute valuable nutrients while simultaneously flushing out germs and toxins.

arts&culture Joburg bloggers experience the best of Rosebank A day spent at Rosebank Arts & Craft Market Blogs are as popular as ever, so the HJ team, in conjunction with Rosebank Mall, hosted a bloggers day out at the Rosebank Arts & Craft Market. The market makes us proud to call ourselves South African, and that’s why we just had to showcase more of this beautiful location and the legacy it encompasses. Five of our favourite Joburg bloggers were introduced to the market and taken on a cultural experience of Africa and its entire glorious heritage. From Angola to Zimbabwe, the bloggers were given all the knowledge they needed to get the full craft-market experience – a proudly South African one at that. They each embarked on their own personal journey of the market, and here’s what they had to say. Jodene Shaer I don’t know one tourist who has come to Africa and not wanted to take a piece of it home with them. Tucked away in the Rosebank Mall is the Arts & Crafts Market, with endless stories of Africa, translated into everything from home décor to jewellery to clothing and furniture. At Stall 25 is Usian, who speaks of Senegal and the masks, tribal weapons and drums he sells. Stop, ask him to play the drums and watch Africa’s true spirit come to life. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this market is a must on your shopping list. 5 www.jodene.co.za

Craving some culture in the urban jungle? Rosebank Craft Market can meet your needs! line the stalls with interesting and delightful finds. I was particularly drawn to the over-the-top Ndebele neckpieces and the colourful, large feather art pieces which could pass off as a headpiece for a carnival in Rio! And the best part: it’s right on our doorstep! 5 www.queenofjozi.com

Heather Hook Rosebank Craft Market is always such a treat to visit if you are looking for unique, handmade gifts, original art pieces or even just to browse amongst the stalls. In July, I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting to a wonderful lady by the name of Mary, whose smile could light up the entire market with its magnificence. Mary is originally from Kenya, has been in South Africa for 13 years now and has been a stallholder at the market for 12 years. Her favourite item on the stand is the olive wood salad servers – they sell well, and tourists like to purchase them as gifts or mementoes to take home. It’s a spectacular escape into this world of arts and crafts, and felt wonderful taking the time to learn more about another culture. I can’t wait to visit again! 5 www.heatherhook.co.za

Dominique Kapery Just taking a walk through the market fills visitors with joy – you will be greeted by friendly faces, colourful products and African

music. I met Sharon Nkomo, a Zimbabwean working at the Art of Ethiopia stand. Sharon is 22 years old and has been working at the market for one-and-a-half years, helping make the beaded jewellery and fabric bags. The Art of Ethiopia specialises in Ethiopian products: beadwork, bags, clothing, jewellery, shoes and statues. All the materials are handmade and sourced from Ethiopia. This is the place you need to visit for authentic African keepsakes. 5 www.dominiqueinthecity.com

Janice Leibowitz While visiting the market in July, I met Themba, who’s worked at this market since 2012, before it moved to its current location. He manages a proudly South African stall for the owners who spend their time sourcing the goods they sell. A firm and instantly recognisable favourite is the much-loved Ndebele doll. Handmade in Mpumalanga, the intricate detail on each one is truly incredible. Themba then demonstrated how Rojans are worn, on the head or as necklaces. He then showed me how the famous Ndebele neckpieces are layered. Next was the extremely popular beaded cutlery. He wires these himself (a set of salad servers takes under a minute!), and his mom then does the beadwork. These make gorgeous gifts, and one must appreciate that someone’s hands have taken the time to create them, as with the all the items sold here. H 5 www.glitterandtoast.com

Explore Joburg’s art scene this August

ll great art is born of the metropolis … and the metropolis is that which accepts all gifts and all heights of excellence’ - wrote the American poet Ezra Pound in a letter to Harriet Monroe. Johannesburg, a frenzy of industry and trade, certainly lives up to Pound’s expectations. If it is the city which produces great artists, then it is the galleries and museums which accept their gifts, and August promises a month of powerful and significant exhibitions

Words Emma Laurence

The Song Of The Chicotte by Blessing Ngobeni In keeping with Pound’s proclamation , the painter Blessing Ngobeni continues his exploration of city life and the ways in which the vigour and magnetism of the city contend with the harsh realities of crime, poverty and desperation in urban spaces. Ngobeni’s career is a true testament to endurance and overcoming hardship. At the age of 16, he was arrested for armed robbery and was jailed for six years. During his time in prison, Ngobeni was introduced to the Tsoga (Wake Up) Arts Project, and thus began his career as one of South Africa’s most promising painters. Ngobeni’s latest exhibition ‘The Song Of The Chicotte’ is on show at Circa gallery in Rosebank untill 21 August. The chicotte is a heavy whip made of hide which was used, perhaps most infamously, in the Belgian Congo under the tyrannical reign of King Leopold. For Ngobeni, the chicotte is a metaphor for slavery, both physical and mental. The paintings depict abstracted figures fused together by colourful shapes, collaged magazine cut outs and gestural marks. These figures exist is surreal landscapes made up of bodiless heads whose mouths stretch open in a scream we can not hear, ghostly silhouettes and graffitied walls. These moments of quiet juxtaposed against the

raging figures are perhaps the key to Ngobeni’s yearning for a world ‘not ruled by the hyena’s of old who wear different guises and inflict the same punishments.’ 5 www.circagallery.co.za The Quiet Violence Dreams - group exhibition featuring an installation by Turiya Magadlela Stevenson Gallery’s group exhibition takes its title from the K Sello Duiker’s novel ‘The Quiet Violence of Dreams’ and while the conceptual framework of the exhibition has as its starting point the ‘portrait of Cape Town’ which emerges in Duiker’s novel, the exhibition extends the narrative into

TURIYA MAGADLELA, UMUDIYADIYA (2015)

Johannesburg. The artist Magadlela's new work at Stevenson Johannesburg addresses institutional violence and institutionalisation in an installation made from prison uniforms. Magadlela has used these common yet loaded fabrics to create abstact compositions which, in their monumental form, pay tribute to the political prisoners of South Africa’s Apartheid past while simultaneously investigating the social and psychological impact of imprisonment in the present day. Magadlela’s installtion will be up at Stevenson Gallery untill 27 August. 5 www.stevenson.info Dreamers by Shirin Neshat The acclaimed Iranian artist Shirin Neshat will open her first solo exhibition in South Africa at the Goodman Gallery on 18 August. The exhibition, titled Dreamers, is comprised of three video installations which explore the world of dreams. Each video documents the psychological and emotional identity of three separate women. The narrative is deliberately ambiguous so that as each woman faces her own distinct inner anxieties, what is real is merged with what is dreamt. The videos consider the notion of trauma beyond lived experience, and the unearthly or dreamlike residue that subsists in the aftermath of real suffering. In a country as diverse as South Africa, which has an embattled history, Neshat’s work speaks to core issues within democracies in a state of change and with a traumatic past. 5 www.goodman-gallery.com

BLESSING NGOBENI ,SONG OF CHICOTTE

In an interview this year, the South African artist Clive van den Berg described the role of the gallery as ‘a place where the unspeakable can be spoken’ and Ngobeni, Magadlela and Neshat have each produced exhibitions which, in different ways, allow for an entry into social and human phenomena which might otherwise seem inaccessible. entertainment Lights, camera and action in Mzansi

Showcasing SA to the world through the silver screen So here’s the SA Geography part we recognised: Parts of the film were shot on the broad uplands of Natal and in the townships of Johannesburg. The rest was filmed in London based studios.

As an industry that contributes around $200 million a year to the country’s economy it’s clear that that the film and TV industry is a massive one for South Africa. And before Cape Town start jumping up and down and accrediting all that cash to their city – tell them to calm down. While many of the movies and scenes are indeed shot in Cape-Town, Jozi and Durban (and even Sun City) are also pretty popular when it comes to setting the scene for some of these films. So whether it's 150 or 10 000 films, here are our top 5 snap shots of some of the more memorable films shot on local soil.

So which parts of the Mother City stole the show? Obvs Table Mountain had her moment as did the Greenpoint Stadium. And here are some random facts about other locations:

Cry The Beloved Country The story of a church minister whose son is arrested for the murder of a white man and the strange understanding that develops between the two fathers, various parts of Cry The Beloved Country were shot in South Africa during the apartheid era. If you haven’t seen it, be warned: it’s a serious tear-jerker. The South African drama film was directed by South African film director, screen writer and producer Darrell Roodt (who also produced Sarafina and Dracula 3000) and is based on Alan Paton’s novel of the same title. The movie starred heavy weight James Earl Jones as Rev Stephen Jones and Richard Harris as Jimmy Jarvis.

One of Ryan’s favourite spots to eat was Mzoli’s Place in Gugulethu. “It was so nice to be part of that community – to listen to the music and pick your raw meats and then they cook them. You can’t help but be in a good mood when you’re in Cape Town,” said Reynolds.

2

Safe House The 2012 American action thriller film starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds was shot in Cape Town. The film follows a CIA agent on his first low-level posting in Cape Town who is in charge of a safe house where the CIA is interrogating a former operative accused of going rogue.

The safe house to which Denzel’s character is sent was built on a makeshift soundstage at the 3 Arts Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Cape Town, and took nearly three months to complete. The production made use of South African talent wherever it could, including for scenes with large crowds involving sometimes up to 4 000 extras.

3

Invictus The 2009 American-South African biographical sports drama film was directed by Clint Eastwood and starred Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. The story, based on John Carlin’s book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation could not have been shot anywhere else without insulting that same nation.

Morgan Freeman takes on the role of Nelson Mandela while Matt Damon tries his tongue around Francois Pienaar’s Afrikaans accent with debatable degrees of success. Shot between Cape Town, Jozi and Pretoria, you should know all the iconic locations if you paid attention in history.

4

Avengers: Age of Ultron An American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team, the Avengers, this is the 11th film. The ensemble cast includes Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and Scarlett Johansson to name a few (you probably saw the social media celeb spotting madness at the time). Filming kicked off in South Africa in 2014 in the streets of Joburg CBD – closing streets and causing traffic havoc at the same time. But the film was primarily shot a Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England with additional footage filmed in Italy, South Korea, Bangladesh and New York

5

Blended A cheesy love story shot in even cheesier Sun City – what more could you ask for? The story of a single dad and mom who find love in the home of the Lost Palace. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore go on a disastrous blind date only to end up sharing a romantic family suite on a free holiday. And so goes the light, fun and romantic story line of their familymoon. The jury is still out on whether or not the location was selected based on Adam Sandler’s yearning for a “real Safari” vacation. H

As a general rule, we don’t believe everything we read, but what we did do is take a look at some of the really cool films and movie scenes that have been shot (and these ones are legit) right here at home.

Long Beach Mauritius is lifting luxury to new heights

he colour blue is associated with calmness, serenity and heaven, and that’s why Mauritius should be the blue capital of the world. This location symbolises richness and adventure, and you’re guaranteed to be charmed by this sensory experience. Long Beach Mauritius is lifting luxury to new heights! In June, Hello Joburg was fortunate enough to visit Long Beach Golf & Spa Resort, which is located on the eastern side of the island of Mauritius. This hotel is fully equipped for fun-filled family holidays and doting honeymooners, and will certainly become your home away from home. Not only does it offer all the deluxe amenities one could hope for, it’s filled with hidden gems, pristine sandy beaches and awesome adventures that will fill your soul and leave you wanting more.

Words Bianca Spinner

Rooms The rooms are architecturally extraordinary – they are spacious, elegant and contemporary yet extremely comfortable. Every room at Long Beach enjoys immediate access to its stretch of beach, garden or pool, and they all have terraced balconies, perfect for admiring the view. Choose from a Standard Ocean View Room, where you will wake up to gorgeous morning views of the lagoon, or opt for the Superior Garden View Room. If you’re really up for being spoilt, then you’ll love falling asleep to the sound of waves in the Superior Beach Front Room. No matter your choice, you’re guaranteed privacy, along with the allimportant free working Wi-Fi.

Activities The possibilities are endless! Long Beach will ensure that you, your significant other and your brood are never bored, and you will very quickly become accustomed to these conveniences. Their fully equipped, air-conditioned gym houses state-of-the-art equipment and a lap pool. You can even hire your very own personal trainer for the duration of your stay. They offer a variety of complimentary beach activities, too. When you’re not tanning, reading or taking a nap, hop on a glass-bottomed boat for a magical tour, or go kayaking, snorkeling, waterskiing or windsurfing. Spa After a relatively short four-hour flight on Air Mauritius, make sure you begin your holiday with a massage at the Sea Spa. This spa is “a temple of calm, an oasis of peace, a heavenly haven”, and more! Nothing beats getting pampered when you’re surrounded by the sounds of flowing water and the calming aromas of massage oils. We highly recommend you start with the Turkish Bath Hammam, followed by an outdoor full body massage.

Food There are five dining options to choose from at Long Beach, as well as a beach bar where you can wind down by listening to local music and sipping on a piña colada. Our all-time favourite restaurant inside Long Beach has to be Hasu – it’s the best Japanese experience we have ever had. Their delicate, aesthetically pleasing cuisine will take you on an unforgettable culinary journey. Sublime! For the kids Parents, you’re in for as big a treat as your kids because Long Beach is armed and prepared for the little ones. There is a wonderful club for kids and teens, which offers pizza-making classes, cooking classes, jungle gyms and board games. The hotel will also plan a full day of activities for your offspring to ensure they’re never bored. Bonus: Kids under 12 stay and eat for free! Service The staff and service providers at Long Beach provide world-class service. You will never hear the word “no”, and you’ll be chauffeured around and waited on hand and foot – especially when you’re indulging in a manipedi. The friendly and accommodating staff are able to make each and every one of their patrons feel like royalty. It’s no wonder Mauritius is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, and there’s no better place than Long Beach to indulge in unsurpassed views while soaking up the sun and the warm Mauritian culture. The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

Joan Madibeng former Miss SA and now businesswoman

“Anything and everything is possible,” says Joan Ramagoshi Madibeng, former Miss South Africa and esteemed businesswoman. It is a simple philosophy that Joan has used in building her own high-profile career in marketing and corporate communications, and it has ensured the success of many branding campaigns, events and social awareness projects that she has been involved with both locally and internationally. Tell us all about Terra de Africa. Terra de Africa offers a range of hotel amenities, such as shampoos, lotions, soaps, foam baths, bath robes and linens. We also supply to corporates, hotels, lodges, and restaurants. In August you will be hosting Women: The Real Architects Of Society. What does it celebrate? I conceptualised this event in 2011, and the focus has always been on creating a dialogue amongst women in order to educate, inspire and empower one another. Networking is very powerful in the business world, so we created a platform for women to network and for organisations to expose their brands to a captured audience. This year, we are celebrating 60 years since the 1956 walk to the Union Buildings, and we will be recognising women who have done extraordinary work in their different industries.

What do you love most about being proudly South African? Our diverse cultures – women and men of this country paid a huge price to ensure we enjoy a democratic nation today, and that should Hello Joburg • August 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

never be taken for granted. I also love our flag, which symbolises unity and South Africa as a rainbow nation. Topping the list are also our 11 official languages and the fact that our national anthem is sung in four of them, our airports, museums, Rooibos tea, and biltong. This list, however, is endless. What does being a woman mean to you? Embracing all aspects of who I am – a woman can be powerful and kind at the same time; she doesn’t have to define who she is. It also means empowering all those around me. Being a woman means wearing many hats and not being concerned about adding more. I just adore being a woman! Would you classify yourself as a feminist? If we define the term as someone who believes in gender equality, then I definitely am a feminist. Being a beauty icon, do you feel constant pressure to always look your best? I don’t think about myself as being a beauty icon, so I don’t allow myself to feel the pressure. However, I ensure I look my best all the time because it’s important to me, and not necessarily to meet someone else’s expectation. Sweats or stilettos? Definitely stilettos! What three items do you always carry in your handbag? Lip gloss, cellphone and a chocolate. H 5 www.joanmadibeng.co.za T @JMadibeng
