I
’ll admit it: I have a hard time staying in the moment. As the end of 2019 approaches, I’m letting go of unrealistic expectations (my own and others’) and zeroing in on what really matters.
Sometimes my perfectionist personality traits serve me well, but most of the time they create unnecessary inner chaos because I’m always planning for what’s next. Before going to bed last night, I worked out that if I were to fall asleep right away, I’d get approximately four hours and 45 minutes of sleep. An hour later, I asked myself if I should even bother going to sleep at this point … and before I knew it, I had my laptop open again.

Choose to be present and concentrate on time – any time you get, whether it’s five minutes or five hours with friends and family – and rest … and I think that might be it, so, take note, universe! Here at Hello Joburg, we’ll be focusing a lot on the ‘simple’ aspects of the season, but we’ll still be working hard throughout the month to bring you the best and biggest December events in the City of Gold. Make sure you keep an eye on our website as well as like and follow us on social media for updates on Christmas Day lunches, New Year’s Eve parties, summer music festivals and many other festive bashes. May this holiday season sparkle and shine, may all your wishes and dreams come true and may you feel this happiness all year round!

When it comes to December, I tend to go into the holiday season with a list of to-dos and unrealistic expectations: Finish all my work by this date, tick everything off my Christmas bucket list (attend a tree lighting ceremony, spend the day baking Christmas cookies, organise a secret Santa gift exchange … you name it) spend one-on-one time with every friend, family member and perfect stranger I meet from here until January 1 … oh, and have fun. Have all of the fun! You can only imagine how I feel by the time the New Year rolls around – neither rested nor prepared for the fresh start. This year, I’m vowing to be more mindful about the holidays, and I hope you’ll join in on the journey. Instead of getting too wrapped up in the ‘shoulds’, register the sweet and simple moments. Whether you find yourself dining with a special date at Basalt, our Restaurant of the Month; having a pamper day with the girls at Africology Spa, one of our beauty hotspots; watching Aladdin or Peter Pan on Ice with the family, two of our top theatre shows happening this month; or enjoying a staycation right here in Jozi at one of our favourite hotels, remember that it’s always the sweet and simple moments that have the most profound impact.

I also do follow-ups on outstanding mails. 05h30 I generally do all the cooking in the household, however, sometimes I like to head out for dinner at hotspots like Fishmonger in Illovo or Rare Steakhouse in Clearwater Mall. The service and food are amazing at both these restaurants. 07h30 This is when song writing happens. I sit alone with my guitar or piano and a good cup of coffee. BLOEDLEMOEN GIN NOW OFFERS BLOEDLEMOEN AMBER
1 www.jerryandthebandits.com E @jerryandthebandits Q @kirst.sax How did you join the band? I was studying music at Wits with Geraint Boje (the bassist), and he and Jerry (the lead singer) were looking for someone to join their band when they were selected to go through to the next level of a battle of the bands. Initially they wanted a trumpet player, but I was the next best thing. What’s your favourite thing about being in a band? Definitely being able to travel. We’ve been to some weird and wonderful places I didn’t even know existed. We’d love to do an overseas tour one day, but it’s not about making it big for us – it’s about playing and spreading the music.
What’s it like being the only female? I enjoy it. I don’t mind being around guys – they’re interesting I actually feel like I’m their mom most of the time. They can be like little kids and I have to tell them to be more professional. Compiled by Amber Richardson Image Supplied.

Kirstin Walters is the saxophonist for one of South Africa’s best loved Indie-Folk bands, Jerry and the Bandits. From playing some of the biggest festivals in SA like Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen and Lush to almost every other music venue you can think of, the band has gained a major following since their inception in 2013. We chatted to Kirsten what she’s learnt and what it’s like to be the only female in the band.
What’s the biggest lesson music has taught you? The weird thing about music is that it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone and it’s weird that I’m so attracted to it because it doesn’t really go with my personality. I’m not an extrovert, I don’t want to be in the limelight, I don’t want to be on stage ... but I just love music so much. Another thing I’ve learned about performing is to never wear a short dress on a windy day. Obviously when you’re playing saxophone, you can’t hold your dress, and my dress has blown up a few times!
Bloedlemoen has added a new variant to their collection, Bloedlemoen Amber. AURUM RESTAU A gold standard for luxurious dining The room is among the city’s most grand, chef Darren O’Donovan mans the kitchen and the service is famously mannered. But esteemed chef and culinary consultant Paulo Santo’s heady, epic ‘Light’ and ‘Dark’ menus are the true heart of Aurum Restaurant, the newest addition to Joburg’s dining scene set to open its doors soon.
A
urum Restaurant, meaning ‘gold’ in Latin, is the brainchild of Paulo Santo, MD and Senior Partner of Aurum Restaurant, in collaboration with the Legacy Group and its chairman, Bart Dorrestein. True to its name, the restaurant delivers understated prestige with an excellent return on investment. “Aurum represents luxury, but not in an intimidating, pretentious or ostentatious manner. Just as gold is timeless in its appeal, we too wish to exist beyond time as a successful, renowned business serving a cosmopolitan African city – the City of Gold,” says Paulo.
10
Good looks aren’t everything, but at Aurum they’re serious business. Tables overlook Sandton from the seventh floor of The Leonardo, South Africa and Africa’s new tallest building. There are glorious, luxurious indoor and outdoor seating areas plus a sunlit pool terrace, a fully private boardroom, semi-private chef ’s table and wine library The décor and design are curated around the element of air; the transparent, exposed architecture with visible columns and beams; and Joburg, being both the City of Gold and the largest urban forest in the world. Aurum’s kitchen is headed up by Paulo’s former chef colleagues at Cube Tasting Kitchen, head chef Darren O’Donovan and sous chef and sommelier Lisa de Beer, who’ve perfected haute cuisine. The menu features contemporary European cuisine with a touch of local flair and has been inspired by Darren and Lisa’s travels around Europe and the types of food they like to eat. By day, Aurum presents the ‘Light’ menu, Solis, which offers à la carte breakfast, brunch and lunch. By night, Aurum takes on a new sense of luxury manifested by the ‘Dark’ menu, Luna, for dinner. The food, like the space, exudes unbuttoned elegance. Signature dishes include the cured springbok, slow-braised pork belly and ‘Afternoon Tea’ – a dessert inspired by the memory of dunking Ouma rusks into tea, showcasing the flavours of rooibos, buttermilk and Clemengold. Hello Joburg Magazine was one of a few select media invited to an exclusive media lunch at Aurum, where we sampled the Light menu. For starters, we tried the outrageously delicious Burrata Salad with a creamy ball of fresh burrata, peak-perfect heritage tomatoes, fresh basil, candied almonds and grapefruit as well as the Buttermilk Crispy Squid; an unalloyed delight for those who love their squid golden-brown and freshly fried served with black bean purée, crispy fried capers, caper berries and horseradish. The standout main course was the Norwegian Salad complemented by lemon curd, black pepper mayo, garden pea textures and potato air. The lemon curd that’s melted into a luscious sauce adds the perfect amount of citrus flavour to the fish with practically no effort, while the peas add vibrant, fresh flavour, texture and colour to the dish. We can also recommend the Leek Ravioli filled with degrees of leek and served in a Parmigiano sauce with white balsamic, and the Roosting Chicken – a chicken thigh, ‘crispy nest’, liver pâté, quail egg, butternut crème caramel and smoked chicken jus.

Accompanying the food menu is an equally impressive wine list, which features 99 of both South Africa and the globe’s finest wines, many of which are available by the glass. Compiled by Lisa, the wine list has been designed in such a way as to convey the best on offer from around the world without being pretentious and inaccessible. This enables guests to be exploratory but also offers them their familiar favourites from the Cape Winelands. In the wine library, there’s a smaller list on offer that boasts special vintages, limited releases and some different, more ‘edgy’ options for the adventurous. Aurum also offers a cocktail list designed by specialist mixologist, Alex Farnell, as well as a selection of after-dinner options – think grappa, cognac, fine whiskies and premium spirits. Even though Aurum is so central to The Leonardo, it’s entirely independent from the hotel brand and a golden oasis for visitors and residents of Joburg alike. In addition to the main restaurant, Aurum will service the entire food and beverage offering at The Leonardo through
its subsidiary brands, namely Leo’s Lounge gin bar and deli kitchen located in the lobby of Level 2, The Leonardo Conference Centre on Level 2, OCTO Bar pool terrace bar, Alto234 rooftop champagne bar and The Leonardo Suites Rental Pool bespoke room service to rental apartments. Whether you’re planning to book a table for two for a hot date night or want to book in a power lunch to impress at a suitably sophisticated spot, you can trust us when we say that Aurum is just the place. SLOWLY Does it
How to be part of the slow fashion movement Slow fashion has definitely been the buzzword of 2019 and refers to a movement that advocates for sustainable clothing. We know that changing our buying habits isn’t going to happen overnight, so here’s how to ease into this fashion revolution.
Fast fashion is all about buying inexpensive trend pieces that won’t last you long and, quite frankly, won’t need to. We all know that trends come and go like thunderstorms in Jozi: They’re big while they’re happening but are often short-lived. So, instead of (literally) buying into trends, invest in some high-quality wardrobe staples. We guarantee you that although the price tag may be a little higher than what you’re used to, the purchase will ultimately work out cheaper as you won’t have to replace things as often. It’s also worth acknowledging that inexpensive items often have a hidden cost, which comes in their impact on the environment.
Investigate
It’s so important to know what the brand you’re buying from stands for, so do your research before you hit the rails. If you’re aware of how a brand makes their garments, you’ll be able to support those whose principles you agree with. A great way of dressing more sustainably is simply by buying from local businesses who aren’t mass producing their products. It’s also vital that you make sure that brands who say they’re sustainable are delivering on their promises. Another way you could make a difference is by questioning yourself before you make a purchase – think about whether you really need something and about how much wear you’ll get out of it.

Reinvent
Remember the days when people would darn their socks? Neither do we. But maybe we should take some inspiration from the practices of previous generations and try fixing our clothes before we decide to bin them. If you can’t sew then maybe it’s worth finding a seamstress or tailor who can do it for you. You can also get them to make alterations to clothes that may not fit you anymore so that you can carry on wearing them. The best part of this is that you’ll be living more sustainably plus supporting people in your community rather than large companies. On the other hand, if you’re artistic you could always rework old items yourself with fun DIYs – Pinterest has loads of clever ideas.
Get thrifty
Thrifting is a fabulous way to get your shopping fix without doing damage to the environment or your bank account. There are plenty of stunning thrift stores in Joburg that have loads of hidden gems waiting to be unearthed, such as Rags and Lace, Reminiscence and Vintiqueen. It’s also likely that you’ll pick up old clothes that will probably be good quality and will last you longer than cheap, new purchases. Plus, you may even be able to find some designer pieces ... no one said that dressing sustainably meant donning a hemp dress and going barefoot!

For a quickie: Africology at The Zone Treatment: The Shaman’s Journey
We’re not sure if it was therapist Tabatha, the ethereal ambiance or the actual massage journey itself (perhaps it was all three), but it literally felt like we were floating. This is an absolute 10 out of 10 experience – an unforgettable, deep, warm and insistent massage. This subtly sensuous adventure takes you through a physical and emotional cycle as it deals with the chakras of the body and realigning them.
Make sure you go an hour or two before your treatment to indulge in all the sensuous spa facilities, from a pebbled and watered path to massage the feet, to a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. There’s also a beautiful outdoor rooftop area to sip on an exotic Africology tea blend and chatter away. The massage uses Africa’s miracle Marula oil blended with neroli to soften signs of ageing through its anti-stress action. Then for the facial, which uses rosehip oil and is designed to restore the skin’s natural balance, warmed rose quartz stones are massaged upon the face in conjunction with a deep cleansing and hydrating rose inspired facial. Getting
Naked WITH LARA Using active ingredients in the holiday sun We’ve teamed up with Lara Wicksteed, co-owner of YouBar in Thrupps Illovo Centre and a skincare buff who worked for brands such as Dermalogica, SkinCeuticals and La Roche-Posay for eight years before she decided to open her own beauty business. This month, Lara gives us the lowdown on active ingredients. The buzzword ‘active ingredients’ is on everyone’s lips at the moment. But what are these active ingredients, exactly?
Lara explains that in any skincare product – even natural ones – active ingredients are responsible for delivering the proposed benefits. “Depending on your skin concerns, you can choose an active ingredient that targets acne breakouts, hyperpigmentation, ageing, fine lines and deep lines,” she says. But here’s the thing: As with any potent ingredients, underlying side effects may emerge when you start using them. According to Lara, one of the most common side effects is heightened photosensitivity, a type of reaction the skin experiences when the treated area is exposed to sunlight. That’s right – some of your favourite creams and serums could be increasing your sun sensitivity without you even knowing … as if you needed a stronger motivation to use sunscreen every day! The ingredients that are most likely to cause skin sensitivity are retinol and hydroxy acids such as AHAs and BHAs, says Lara.
22
If you use these ingredients without effective sun protection at the same time, Lara explains that you can put yourself at risk of developing sun damage, which will worsen your existing skin concerns. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
So, let’s talk about how you should be using them for optimal results.
Retinol Dubbed the gold standard of anti-ageing products by many dermatologists, retinol targets wrinkles, enlarged pores, fine lines as well as uneven skin tone and textures, says Lara. “Otherwise known as vitamin A, retinol stimulates cell renewal to produce healthy new skin cells,” she explains. “Think of the new skin that develops like a baby’s skin – it’s precious and delicate, and therefore shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight.” Lara adds that the goal of using retinol is to improve aged, damaged skin, but if you’re exposing it to environmental factors like the sun, you’re defeating the objective of achieving healthy, youthful skin. For this reason, she says the labels of most retinol products recommend using it at night only to avoid sun damage any risks.
“Due to the constant exfoliation these products provide, your face can become more vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation – even on days you don’t use them,” she explains. “This is because exfoliating acids stay in the skin and to continue treating the skin. They don’t just simply wash off.” Interestingly enough, studies have shown that continual use of hydroxy acids can cause your skin to burn when exposed to UV light up to 24 hours after last application, Lara adds. Lara concludes these ingredients can do wonders for the skin, so there’s no need to purge your cabinets of products that contain them. “By simply being mindful of the amount of sun exposure you’re getting and applying sunscreen regularly – in addition to seeking shade and covering up with hats and sunglasses – you should experience no downsides.” Happy holidays, HJ!
Hydroxy acids Hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid) are naturally derived acids that chemically exfoliate the skin. Commonly found in skin-brightening and acne-fighting products, these acids work to rid the surface of buildup to keep skin smooth and hydrated, says Lara.

ost Joburgers have moved on, but the splendidly re-energised Peech Hotel is still one of Joburg’s more covetable treasures – especially now that it’s redefined its food and wine offering. Owners James and Vicky Peech have set up another restaurant: An intimate 40-seater venue that’s situated in the hotel’s original heritage house overlooking the main entrance with chef Freddie Dias, previous head chef of The Pot Luck Club, at the helm.

Basalt, named after a dark fine-grained volcanic rock that sometimes displays a columnar structure, is low-lit and atmospheric – just the place for a midweek date night. The cavernous space is sexy and lush, decked out with an eclectic mix of furniture that’s armed to charm. There’s parquet flooring, charcoal walls, sumptuous upholstery and touches of copper. Come here for five-star service, supreme hospitality and the chance to eat upscale savoury custard (or anything you fancy) in beautiful room that’s a prize ticket for romantic assignations. Grab a leather bar stool at the plush bar and get things off to a racy start with a round of signature cocktails or chilled vodka shots. Then, bag one of the sultry nooks for a tryst over some big-hearted food. The simple menu, consisting of only five starters, five mains and three desserts, is a celebration of Freddie’s Portuguese roots and his time in Mexico and France. It has a focus on sustainable fish, game, game birds and vegetarian dishes, but don’t panic – even if you’re not sure about your date’s dining preferences yet, you can’t go wrong here. We recommend the intricately balanced ceviche with squid ink tiger’s milk, pickled radish, marinated cucumber and crispy quinoa as well as the exquisitely plated Japanese savoury custard with broad bean, mint and lemon to start.
Either way, expect fine-tuned cooking with add-ons … and a serious wine list to boot. Next comes our favourite part – the carefully rendered, offbeat mains that are guaranteed to soothe curious palates. The pan-fried line fish is particularly delicious, with zesty cauliflower and lime butter with the mustardy kick of curry leaves. You can also soak up the exotic thrills of risotto with 10 vegetables and fresh Parmesan, Mexican-inspired pork belly with Ricarda Negra, charred asparagus and toasted almond molé, and other culinary delights. The desserts are bound to impress your Romeo or Juliet too. The Sweet Citrus Burst with Crema Catalana, naartjie granita and lemon leaf snow is a surefire hit for a showy date night, while the Red Wine Poached Figs with smoked chocolate mousse, date cream and almond praline is subtly nuanced and bursting with unexpected flavours. There’s also a cheese platter for two – a spread of hard, soft, goat and blue cheese, candied walnuts and baguette. At Basalt, it’s all about luxuriating in smart food aided by cosseting service ... it’s irresistible for couples and canoodlers and has something for every amorous encounter. Starters are between R85 and R120 and mains range from R150 to R210. Basalt is open for dinner only from Tuesday to Saturday from 18h30 to 23h30 but doesn’t take walk-ins, so bookings are essential. B
You’ll be drawn in by the romantic aura of this 60-seater space with its clean, fine lines, minimalistic feel and ultra-contemporary design. The creation of distinct flavours in the cuisine is also depicted in the discrete décor – it’s simple and beautiful. What will really catch your eye is the ceiling exhibition of upside-down baobab trees. Once you’re seated with a glass of Eigashima Shuzo white wine cask whisky (one of 500 bottles in the world), you and your partner will be prepared to be taken to cloud nine. The dishes are innovative, and each ingredient shines throughout to create an ideal balance.
24
There’s never a dull moment when it comes to this imaginative six course whisky pairing (you can also opt for a wine or a non-alcoholic pairing). Whiskies have been meticulously hand-selected for each dish and, yes … it all comes together like a philharmonic orchestra! For a tongue teaser, you’ll begin with breadsticks and a kimchi mayo followed by dusky black mussel shell cannoli topped with pumpkin and kale and then a plate of fish in toast (yes, in not on toast). Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
Showing off the restaurant’s culinary skills is the second course of the tasting menu: Gnocchi with spinach, seeds, raisins, capers and a decadently flaky and full-flavoured Karoo crumble … it’s pure perfection! The forgiving potato pockets fill your mouth with umami whilst the seductive leafy-green sauce exquisitely compliments the richness of the pasta. Another typical whisky pairing of goat’s cheese, guava and honeycomb conjures memories of a summer’s day, savouring in the dazzle of the Stellenbosch winelands. JUSTIN chef MAHARAJ of the m
onth
Good food doesn’t have to be about fancy ingredients – but what you do with them definitely counts. This month, we caught up with Justin Maharaj, the new executive chef at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa’s Amuse-Bouche restaurant, about his personal journey, food trends and the power of humble ingredients.
Having grown up in Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal with working class parents, Justin familiarised himself with humble coastal products and watched his mother closely as she turned ordinary produce into delicious meals. “It was then that I realised that you don’t need the
most elite ingredients to cook spectacular food. Maintaining the integrity of the ingredients you have in your cooking methods is what makes a great dish,” he explains. In a bid to turn his passion into a reality, Justin studied at the International Hotel School in Durban. His first professional kitchen experience was at Fairmont Zimbali Lodge at the age of 17, where he worked during school holidays and felt right at home … and he’s never looked back. Justin then chopped his way though some of the country’s largest kitchens – from The Maslow Hotel in Sandton to Emperors Palace – before opening his own spot, Rendezvous, in Umhlanga and Umdloti.
So, what can patrons expect from the menu at Amuse-Bouche? The restaurant serves up classical dishes with a modern twist that maintain the authenticity, heritage and provenance of the ingredients of its Mediterranean menu. There’s no room for error when it comes to the quality of the food and service excellence. Of course, maintaining this quality and excellence means Justin must have his finger on the pulse of all food trends, which keep chefs on their Birkenstock toes. “We’re seeing an increase in appreciation for different cuisines amongst local patrons. People also want to experience food that’s authentic and true to its origin. With this comes a

rom the pages of one magazine to another, some of Justin’s earliest recollections of interesting food came from his mother’s weekly YOU magazine. “I would cut out recipes from the magazine. The Zone@Rosebank With over 30 restaurants, we think it’s safe to say that The Zone has all of the culinary offerings one could ever hope for, making it the perfect spot to host Hello Joburg Magazine’s Eat the World Foodie Tour that took place last month. Our tour started off on a high note (literally) at the spectacular bar and restaurant at The Holiday Inn. Offering stunning views of the jacaranda trees and a glorious pool deck, it proved to be the ideal place to welcome our guests. It also provided a great backdrop for said guests, which included the likes of Dee Mandic (@thatstotallyfetch_sa), Sara Morshedi (@glamhousesa) and Jade Voges (@jade.voges) to snap some picture-perfect #OOTDs while enjoying the welcome drinks. Once everyone had arrived, we began our grand tour, starting with a stop at Mythos ... or should we say Greece? Our influencers savoured
halloumi, fresh salads, pita bread, falafels and Greek wine while soaking up the impeccable blue and white décor, reminiscent of a Santorini courtyard. The next seaside paradise themed stop was none other than Ocean Basket. Sharing platters brimming with calamari, fried squid heads and battered hake were the order of the day. Oh, and, of course, some more delicious wine!

The final indulgence was Lexi’s fruity smoothies; perhaps an unconventional nightcap but a fabulous way to end off a wonderful evening of great company and food, nonetheless. In the end, we set out to eat the world and eat the world is definitely what we did. LERATO'S CORNER A candid review …
CHE ARGENTINE GRILL
We’re mad about meat, so we know that Joburg is home to some of the best steakhouses and grills in the country whether we’re after a 1kg tomahawk ribeye or Argentinian asado. A few weeks ago, we wanted savour sirloin, chateaubriand, fillet steak and beyond somewhere new and decided to go to Che Argentine Grill in its new location hidden away on Jan Smuts Avenue in Parkwood. The new restaurant has the same sultry, seductive look and feel as the Maboneng one used to have: Dark grey walls, red curtains, high ceilings and wooden tables with candles and mismatched chairs. Sexy murals and Edison bulbs add further quirkiness to the industrial-style space. One difference is that the new restaurant has a small outside section at the back too, which is sure to be popular in summer. My lunch date and I were keen for a boozy lunch, so we ordered a round of Clarito cocktails to kick it off. Shaken with gin, dry vermouth, syrup and lemon, they were simple but great – not to mention super-affordable at R55 each. We were also recommended the margarita and mezcal margarita, which we’ll be back to try. On the side, we ordered Che’s famous Carne (100% chopped beef, onion, red peppers and eggs) and Caprese (mozzarella, basil and tomato) empanadas to nibble on. Unfortunately, only after biting into what was meant to be the Caprese did I discover a filling of ham, mozzarella and oregano. The waitress’s reaction was unconcerned and while she said she’d get the chef to prepare the Caprese empanada right away, it never ended up arriving. For mains, I wanted the Pollo Deshuesado – half a deboned chicken marinated in lemon, garlic and oregano and then grilled – but the restaurant hadn’t received stock. My second choice was the Spanish-style octopus with paprika and potatoes, but again … no luck. I ended up settling for a few of the tapas: The grilled tuna and sautéed vegetables, fried prawns with garlic and chilli, and mushroom croquettes with truffle oil. All three were average at most, with the best plate probably being the croquettes. On the other hand, my lunch date ordered the Arañita Steak (AKA the spider or butcher’s steak), which was certainly something to write home about. Served on a shining white plate, the black charred lines clashed with bright pink insides … it consoled, sated, seduced. While the owner was engaged and clearly very passionate about Che, the ‘new’ restaurant still has a long way to go before the standard of service matches up to the food, drink and ambiance. It’s still early days though, so I’ll visit again soon to see if things have improved. Nonetheless, I’d absolutely recommend Che for a midweek lunch or dinner or a celebration with friends. It will be a problem for vegetarians as there’s little alternative to meat, but the meats that are all cooked on the open grill and served with chimichurri sauce are so good that it makes it understandable. And did we mention that the beef is grass-fed and sourced from a reputable farm in the Midlands? Enough said! FOOD DRINKS AMBIENCE SERVICE

OUT TO SCOUT
Tips to get some phone numbers … without being banned from the bar There may still be hope for a date to that New Year’s party you’re going to! We’re not making any promises, but if you are out to scout, these are some of the things you shouldn’t do. It works in movies and occasionally in real life when you randomly catch a stranger smiling at you and smile back. It’s plausible, and if it happens naturally, then go with it as it unfolds organically. But singling someone you like out in the crowd at a bar and staring at them until it gets awkward won’t result in your happily ever after. If anything, the object of your affection is likely to feel uncomfortable, leave the venue or avoid you. Even though you’re on the scout, be subtle and read the room!
THE ACCIDENTAL DRINK SPILL This is a guaranteed fail … always! Not only is it irritating and a waste of money, but nine out of 10 times it’s also obvious. Again, this may work in the movies, but not in real life. If you really want to get someone’s attention, go over and say hello. Old school rules! Ask them their name or give a sincere compliment. If the conversation goes somewhere, cool. If not, at least you’re not sticky as a result of spilling your drink.
HOLD BACK ON THE LIFE HISTORY
40
Ladies, this one could be you. If the guy you’ve been eyeing offers to buy you a drink at the bar, play it cool and keep it light. This isn’t the right time to tell him about every relationship that has ever gone wrong or how terrified you are about settling down with the right or wrong guy. If you need a topic to get the conversation going, consider asking what his plans are for the festive season. Reversely, be wary of the guy who buys you a drink and starts talking about his mother. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
DON’T GIVE UP! No one likes being shot down, but it happens. The trick is to not be discouraged, get totally wasted and then make a fool of yourself. Also remember that not everyone who’s out at a bar is looking to meet someone just because you are. Be discerning about who you approach: If the lady you like is having a big girls’ night out with her friends, she may be less likely to show any interest. Pick yourself up and move on.
PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY It may seem obvious but sitting alone or in a group at a bar browsing Instagram screams ‘disinterested’ … and really won’t help your cause with meeting a suitable partner or impressing your friends. SUMMER NIGHTLIFE HOTSPOTS THE TINY TIKI BAR
Whether you’re looking to grab afterwork drinks with coworkers or a spot for an early-game Tinder date, The Tiny Tiki Bar knows how to make the warm weather remain a breeze. Adjoining sister venue The Anti-Social Social Club, here you can look forward to a colourful, laidback atmosphere and kitsch cocktails, such as The Zombie made with a famous blend of four different rums and the Bahama Mama; an exotic blend of coconut, Kahlua and Sailor Jerry Rum. The next morning, go back to cure your hangover with a pancake stack with housemade miso and maple bacon. 10 7th Street, Melville m 071 774 5242
THE HIDE OUT
The Hide Out is just the place to go if you’re staying at a backpacker in the inner-city. Not only because you should have plenty left to splurge on drinks seeing as you won’t be splashing out on a fancy pants bedroom, but also because you’ll meet fellow travellers and like-minded people over drinks like the Mojito Mint, Cranberry Daiquiri and Strawberry Bubblegum. Fun fat? The building the bar is inside used to be a secret printing press and hideout for antiapartheid leaders, hence the name. Curiocity Backpackers, 302 Fox Street, Maboneng m 011 027 5257
THE IMMIGRANT BAR
Brought to you by the same guys behind 86 Public and Republic of 94 and closely linked to the Once in Joburg ‘flashpackers’ hostel, you can bet that The Immigrant Bar is where the party’s at. Find on a seat on the two-tiered terrace that overlooks Braam’s busy Grove Square and get happy drunk on signature citrus-based jam jar cocktails. On the cocktail menu you’ll also find the likes of a Cinnamon Pear Mojito, Raspberry Grapefruit Rosemary Martini and Pineapple Breeze. Unfortunately, apart from the nachos, we wouldn’t recommend the food. 90 De Korte Street, Braamfontein m 061 443 0084

SHAKERS COCKTAIL BAR
You might recognise Shakers Cocktail Bar from most of Joburg’s markets a couple years ago. Its permanent location that takes form of an open-air cocktail bar in Maboneng’s quirky Maverick Corner only has a few tables available, but you won’t mind that once the salsa dancing starts. The cocktail menu includes all the warm-weather classics as well as cocktails served in teapots, buckets and jam jars, all garnished with fresh fruit and berries. Plus, their new kitchen serves up finger-licking gastropub meals like burgers, ribs and halloumi sticks. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 011 015 7111 Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Becky, Please Turn Off the Lights
Peter Pan on Ice
This over-the-top show is set against the backdrop of a lavish club where three friends are celebrating a bachelorette party. As the night wears on, the story slowly reveals itself to not be the light-hearted tale it convinced you it was, but instead a frightful horror. The friends must use their bank cards and privilege – and naturally still take cute selfies – while trying to escape their imminent demise. Becky, Please Turn Off the Lights promises to be both funny and scary and gives you a reason to check out the POPArt Theatre; a cool, offbeat theatre situated in the trendy Maboneng precinct that’s well worth a visit.
Reconnect with your inner lost boy (or girl) with the wonderful Peter Pan on Ice. Showcasing the talents of 23 former World, European and National Championshiplevel skaters, this highly accomplished cast knows how to amaze audiences with a flawless performance ... and the fact that the show is on ice makes this childhood favourite even more whimsical. Guests can expect the original score, unbelievable choreography and the story’s iconic characters, such as Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Captain Hook. There will also be jaw-dropping acrobatics, flying sequences, and spectacular fire-on-ice drama.

TRUE REVIEW Peter Pan on Ice - the real slog to Neverland
It’s a make-believe journey that requires rehearsals for nine or more hours a day, six days a week for seven weeks … wow!
M
aking magic never looked so hard, and understanding the behind-the-scenes prep creates a new respect for this manifestation of mischief and adventure … on ice! While it's not a brand-new concept for us, theatre shows on ice remain novel for South African audiences who like to wear jerseys in summer.
To squash the perception of shows on ice, let’s get into it. Is this a bunch of B-grade dancers in oversized Disney character costumes stomping around on the ice? Not at all. The time, effort and logistics put into this performance are extensive, detailed and impressive. The show comprises exceptional talent, namely former World, European and National Championship level skaters – a group of 23 performers that collectively hold more than 250 competition medals. You do the math! The preparation is grueling, with a full seven weeks of training to ensure a polished and seamless show. The result is a spellbinding show for all audiences, irrelevant of age. The choreography is world-class, with acrobatics, flying sequences and LED illumination to set the stage alight. Since their debut in 2004, the Imperial Ice Stars have captivated more than four million people in 27 countries across five continents and have performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the London Palladium and three seasons at the Royal Albert Hall. So, yes, this one comes to you highly recommended by us!

Peter Pan on Ice is taking place at The Teatro at Montecasino from 6 December 2019 to 11 January 2020. Tickets are available from Computicket and cost between R150 and R475 per person. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
BEHIND-THE-SCENES FACTS 25 pairs of skates and 50 sets of blades are carried with the troupe on tour. To freight the whole show is approximately 25,000kg (or equivalent of 70) grand pianos. During a year, the flying pieces on stage will move approximately 27,000m during shows. 14 tonnes of ice are created in the production – the same weight as nearly 3 elephants. 2,500 litres of anti-freeze are used – that’s enough to fill 100 car-cooling systems. The ice reaches temperatures of -15°C, which is three times colder than your household freezer. In a theatre, the ice rink takes over 140 man-hours to build but only 30 man-hours to dismantle. The show always requests a hot water supply when ‘dressing’ the ice rink because hot water freezes quicker than cold due to the Mpemba effect. In the last year during the show dismantling, there have been approximately 26,500 shovelfuls of ice deposited from the stage.

So, do we recommend you get tickets for this one? Look, it’s Peter Pan, dear thespians. Whether Peter’s on land, sea or ice, this story is an age-old classic that will continue to be retold time and time again. This time, The Imperial Ice Stars who brought Cinderella to us in 2017 are back to tell JM Barrie’s beloved story of Peter Pan, the boy who never grows up.

REVIEWED: THE
10 things we love about it
F
Another year another iPhone ... or so it seems! We’ve been accustomed to yearly releases of the gorgeous devices and this year’s refresh didn’t disappoint. Along from the regular iPhone 11, Apple released two new devices: The 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. So, what makes these so special and what can you possibly do with three cameras? eaturing a stunning Pro Display, A13 bionic, cutting-edge Pro Camera System and the longest Battery life ever in iPhone with iPhone 11 Pro Max, there’s not much more that you could ask for in the new iPhone. We took a second to get up close and personal with the device and have this to report.
1.
2.
Words Kevin McLennan Images Supplied
3. 4.
This is the first iPhone series to boast three cameras on the device. There’s a new ultra-wide, wide and telephoto camera. The ultra-wide camera captures four times more scene than ever. Apple says it’s like taking a massive step back without moving. The new matte feel on the back of the iPhone feels great in hand along with the introduction of its new colour, midnight green. This contrasts with the previous iPhones that had glass backings. The new glass is the toughest glass ever in a smartphone and will protect the phone with everyday incidents.
The new Super Retina XDR display is a pro display with the brightest display ever in an iPhone device … and it shows.
The iPhone 11 Pro offers up to four more hours of battery life in a day than iPhone XS, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max offers up to five hours more than iPhone XS Max. This is in addition to the introduction to fast charging – you can get 50% battery in 30 minutes.
5. 6.
The iPhone is rated IP68 for water resistance up to 4 meters for up to 30 minutes. It’s also resistant against everyday spills like water, coffee and soft drinks.
iOS 13 comes shipped standard with the devices and features the super-cool night mode feature, which takes any kind of strain off your eyes when using your device in the dark.
7.
Keeping up with all things to do with the dark, the camera now features revolutionary improvements on low-light photography thanks to the telephoto lens. There’s a night mode that helps you shoot breathtaking images at night.
8. 9.
The video camera that shoots in 4K features a handy feature called cinematic video stabilisation, which helps users shoot professionally styled videos right from their smartphone.
The front-facing TrueDepth camera can now record 4K video at up to 60 fps and 120 fps slow-mo. These are officially dubbed ‘slofies’ and will definitely get you all the Instagram likes.
10.
The iPhones came right out with a wide range of accessories, cases and covers that you can pick up from the iStore. We’re especially obsessed with the fun, fresh confetti case from Case Mate.
The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are available now at the iStore starting at R21,999. The iStore also offers iCare at R1,999, which protects your phone against accidental screen breakage and software issues. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Who needs Mauritius when you can have a sleepover at the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff? Location: Westcliff, Johannesburg This has to be, without a doubt, one of our favourite city hotels in the world. There isn’t anything not to love about this hotel … it’s a dream come true. We recommend booking for a night or two – believe us, you’ll mistake this splendour for a five-star luxurious pool area in Maurice. There might be no sand or palm trees, but there is a magnificent view of Joburg, the finest cocktails and a beautiful pool area exclusive to hotel guests. Take note that you also won’t need to travel all overseas for a Michelinstar meal because from 1 to December 2019, the hotel will be hosting Michelin-starred Chef Massimiliano Musso for an exclusive pop-up dining experience.

Who needs the Louvre Museum in Paris when you have the Wits Art Museum?
Location: Vaal River Where do we even begin? There are 32 campsites all along the river. It’s a beautiful site over sunset or sunrise whilst fishing for barbel or yellowfish. Your 06h00 alarm clock will be the tweets and cheeps of the localised ecosystems of birds. Plus, there are ablution blocks and braai facilities. It’s a picture-perfect setting and instead of a long-haul flight, it takes a mere three-hour drive from the city. Winning! If you’re more about the glamping lifestyle, there’s also a self-catering stone cottage that sleeps six people.
WAM showcases thousands of pieces of African artwork ranging from historic to contemporary. One of our favorite oldies is Robert Hodgins’ 1955 Still Life with Fruit and David Koloane- chronicles of a resilient visionary. Inside you’ll find a charming café and The Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts, which houses over 3000 artist’s books, 400 of which are South African. Remember entrance is free; this is a staycation that won’t cost you a single cent. It’s a true celebration of African art; you’ll amble for hours and feel as if you’re in one of the top museums in the world. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10h00 to 16h00.

A game-changing world of
WILDERNESS AND WILDLIFE Why you need to book a weekend away at Thanda Safari
Romance abounds at Thanda Safari, a secluded game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal with luxury hideaway tented camps. Encircled by luscious wilderness, the exquisitely scenic reserve blurs the lines between a fantasy getaway and an African adventure. Whether it’s your first or fifth safari, this destination needs to be next on your to-do list – here’s why.
Words Candice May Images Supplied
It’s an indulgent escape Several accommodation options are inside Thanda Safari: Bush suites at Thanda Safari Lodge, a completely private and exclusive bush retreat at Villa iZulu and luxury safari tents at Thanda Tented Camp. Our top pick is the tented camp, offering bush living as nature intended – open and inviting with unparalleled closeness to the bush. The sumptuous tented suites have a campaign-style look that’s a romantic throwback to the pioneer era of safari. You can sip champagne on your private sun deck, which affords astounding panoramas of multi-coloured sunsets, or take a dip in the shared rim-flow pool that appears to flow over into the wilderness canopy.

Adventures are on tap … day and night You’ll hear the cries of animals through the canvas of your tent, but if that’s not enough, there are morning and afternoon game drives that happen to be some of the best we’ve experienced. Just picture it – you’re deep in the bush and as the sun peeks over the horizon, your safari guide suddenly cuts the jeep’s engine and motions you to stay quiet as the sound of grunting lions comes carried on the breeze. You get a passing glance from a zebra at the watering hole ... but he’s on the lookout for more immediate threats like the family of cheetahs hiding in the underbrush just a few hundred metres away. Tip: If you’re heading out for an early trek, a bush breakfast is served at sunrise. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
Animal encounters go beyond game drives There’s no denying that South Africa is an extraordinary country, rich in spellbinding scenery, captivating culture and fascinating wildlife. It’s easy to connect with the great outdoors in a country that’s as dynamic as it is diverse – especially here. Experience the bush on foot during an exclusive guided walk or explore beyond the reserve on a guided boat tour to see hippos and crocodiles in the nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. There are also a variety of Zulu cultural and community experiences in the neighbouring villages as Thanda Safari is deeply committed to Zulu culture and environmental conservation. Every stay is tailored to your exact requirements Thanda means ‘love’ in the language of the Zulu people and that’s exactly what shines through in the service from check-in to checkout. Whether you’d prefer slow-cooked potjiekos or tender game cuts flavoured with homegrown herbs at dinner, the chef will produce perfection for your palate and cater for all your dietary requirements. If you’d like to relinquish all responsibility for a while, book a massage with one of the spa therapists who are all dedicated to customising each treatment depending on your age, diet and emotional dynamics. They only use beautiful, non-allergenic products ... and did we mention that the setting overlooks the Royal Zulu Mountains where wild animals roam?
Getting there Thanda Safari is about a six-hour drive from Joburg on the N2. Alternatively, you can fly into Richards Bay Airport or King Shaka International Airport where the team will meet you and drive you to the reserve. L 032 586 0149 K www.thandasafari.co.za E @thandasafari Q @thandasafari

We don’t know if this one is thanks to millennials or just people who want to play more golf, but we’ve certainly seen the rise of the prevalence of business and leisure in the last while, with the concept even hitting Wikipedia with media articles for days. The addition of leisure to business events and conferences has increased over the years and while it may have just been a cherry on top last year, it has fast become the must-have olives in a martini going forward. After a long day of meetings and breakaway sessions, especially when away from home, delegates want to kick back and relax.
Event planners and organisers have been using digital registration platforms for some time now, so that’s nothing new. And while technology makes certain things easier, it all makes delegates more demanding and raises their expectations. This means ensuring that the digital consumer journey to register and take part in your event is seamless. It just takes one frustrated delegate to have the site crash or not find the right link to register before your social channels or phone lines blow up and put a black mark next to your event before you’ve even opened the doors. Tip: Don’t cut corners when it comes to your registration portal and mechanics. Make sure you get someone legit to put it together and have the team monitor the back end when registration starts to avoid the abovementioned scenario. Also, be quick to respond if delegates do express frustration.
Ethical supply chain
No one is exempt anymore and the decisions made by large companies are scrutinised more than ever. When planning your next big event, work with suppliers who prioritise sustainability and work morally. For the food, go with suppliers who use locally sourced or seasonal ingredients and are sensitive to waste. Also, choose local entertainment and leisure options to support the community in which you operate. And don’t forget to always pay suppliers timeously! Tip: Make it easy for delegates to dispose of waste with numerous recycling points that are clearly marked. Don’t let left over food go to waste. It’s a nice idea to donate it or repackage it neatly to share with employees. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Seamless registration
Tip: You don’t need to erect a casino or put on a musical. Something as simple as offering delegates a massage or a complimentary round of golf at the nearest course will certainly entice them come back to your event the following year.

Reminiscing 2019
Successes to build on at the Johannesburg Expo Centre Being crowned as one of South Africa and Joburg’s leading events venues at the PMR Africa Business Awards this year, the Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC) is happy but humble to say: It was a good year.
F
illed with numerous events – from small, intimate functions to largescale events with challenging turnaround times – the JEC has proven that with a dedicated team onboard, nothing is impossible. Even in these challenging economic times, they were able to secure exhibitions, conferences and events that lured old and new visitors to the premises – surprising them with its versatility as always.
54
The Toyota Warrior Race kicked off the year in spectacular fashion with a whole lot of adrenaline and adventure. The event catered for some 3000 visitors on the day with lots of excitement going around. The Ultra Music Festival returned for its 6th edition, luring about 20 000 people to the venue’s outdoor festival grounds. They also hosted the City of Joburg for their Awards Ceremony in June, with 5000 visitors attending and the Rose Festival that took place in August had an attendance similar in size. In addition to these, other highlights were of course the annual Rand Show, ProPak Africa, the Gauteng Youth Expo, the Classic Car Show, Automechanika, China Home Life and the SATDU Conference. These leading events were attended by multiple government delegates and even President Ramaphosa graced the venue with his presence during the SATDU conference. The level of delegates proves the JEC’s ability in hosting high priority events. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
Did you know? The Johannesburg Expo Centre has a lake on which you can do outdoor displays, a registered helicopter landing site, a drift track, a 4x4 demonstration track and even a monorail which runs for 1000m – 1200m around the expo centre. November was filled with more private functions and events, boasting numerous year-end celebrations, which goes to show that the JEC is not only good for 10 000s of people, but also for more intimate settings. These intimate celebrations will continue, but the venue will also be utilized to its full potential for events like the Classic Car Show, JMPD Pass Out Parade, Hip Hop Music and the EFF’s Elective Conference. With the MICE industry always developing and changing - especially with technology playing an increasingly large role in how events are run and Millennials starting to take a stand in the business industry – the Johannesburg Expo Centre is very excited about the new year approaching. In this industry, challenges are what they strive for. 2019 can only be a building block for 2020 and it’s exciting to say the least. HOTELS AT OR TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT INTERCONTINENTAL
At the country’s only luxury airport hotel, you can expect nothing less than the crème de la crème. A short walk from the arrival’s hall, the InterContinental touts 138 impeccably appointed rooms, including two lavish suites, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the tarmac – but you’ll never hear a plane take off or land thanks to excellent soundproofing. Clear your head at Camelot Spa, where you can opt for massage therapy or a specialised skin treatment while taking in awe-inspiring views of Joburg – the best balm for a busy day – or enjoy the sleek, indoor heated swimming pool, hydro bath and steam room. After some pampering, head to Quills Restaurant, where an 18-metre porcupine mobile suspended from the ceiling sets the tone, while the spirit of Africa is reflected in authentic dishes like slow-cooked springbok shank infused with an apricot and almond merlot jus, and chicken galantine stuffed with pistachio nuts. Jones Road, OR Tambo International Airport, Kempton Park m 011 961 5400 1 www.tsogosun.com
SOUTHERN SUN
Set directly adjacent to the airport, the Southern Sun is both an architectural marvel and a biz traveller’s dream. With direct pedestrian access and stacked with 366 comfortable and tastefully furnished en-suite rooms, the hotel is hardly Plan B material. A continental breakfast buffet of fresh bread and pastries, cheeses and cold cuts freshens every morning, and dinners are prime time for Mediterranean-themed dishes at Bernoulli’s Restaurant, from angel hair pasta tossed with diced crayfish tail to pan-fried duck breast fillet served on a sautéed warm vegetable salad followed by homemade blueberry pie topped with whipped cream. Sneak to Caroline’s Day Spa & Salon for a hydration facial, aromatherapy massage, back wrap or hot oil hair treatment and you’ll feel as good as new before that big meeting. PREMIER HOTEL
A mere 2.7km from the airport, the Premier Hotel is pretty swanky for what could easily be another mediocre highway hotel. The 275-room hotel, buffeted by sprawling gardens, looks and feels a little like a tropical oasis – but with better amenities. Take a dip in the pool or, better yet, treat yourself to an Evolving Hammam package at Evolve Day Spa - a signature ritual based on old Turkish baths - that includes a full body cleanse and exfoliation in the hammam room plus a back, neck and shoulder massage. Before you crash, take some time to mingle at the bar and then take the party to the warm and welcoming Kubatana Restaurant for a dinner of high-end African fare. 73 Gladiator Street, Rhodesfield, Kempton Park C m 011 393 8000 1 www.premierhotels.co.za

DAVID GILLSON
Well-known hairstylist and co-owner of Carlton Hair in Hyde Park and Melrose Arch, David Gilson has opened a brand-new hair salon on the Insta-famous Elizabeth Street in London. Like Carlton Hair, Issy’s is also a sustainable salon that stocks high and eco-friendly Davines products. We sat down with David to find out more.
What’s the story behind Issy’s? I’ve always wanted to have a business overseas – especially in London because I travel there frequently – so when Debbie Postiglioni, my manager from Carlton Hair Hyde Park, moved to London and wanted to open a salon, I was thrilled. One of my clients, Isme Rossi, who lives between here and London also wanted to get involved, so the three of us teamed up and put the budget together to open Issy’s. We bought it in May and in September it closed for renovations, but as of 1 October it’s been officially open! What makes Issy’s a must visit for Joburgers travelling to London? The location is amazing – it’s on Elizabeth Street in Belgravia, one of the most Instagrammed streets in the world. It’s home to Dominique Hansel, Baker & Spice, Mungo & Maud as well as Peggy Porschen Cakes, where people line up from eight in the morning to eight at night to take Instagram pictures outside the store front. Everything on the street is completely unique; nothing is a chain, so that makes it special. How do you deal with the seasonal difference in hair trends between Joburg and London? More and more there are no seasons. Years ago, they would predict the seasons and it would take us a year to get it. Thanks to the Internet, people in South Africa are now very aware of what’s going on overseas and around the world. Although some trends work better in certain seasons, I don’t see us as behind anymore. It’s not like you still have to wait for Vogue to come out to see the trends.
What are some other new launches from Davines? Davines has launched the Alchemic System line of colour shampoos and conditioners that add a fun wash of colour to hair. It lasts one or two washes, so it’s great if you’re going clubbing or to the beach and want to look really cool. You can also play with the intensity of the colour, as the colour payoff is dependent on how long you leave it on for. And if you don’t like it or are going back to work, you can wash it out with the deep cleansing shampoo. There’s also a new treatment, On Protection; a reconstructing treatment that’s great for people who want to be chameleons and change their hair colour, but also want to maintain its health.
64
What makes Carlton Hair and Issy’s sustainable? We use eco heads to conserve water and only use Davines products produced in Parma, Italy, which are made with all-natural ingredients and have no carbon footprint. At Issy’s we also use disposable towels because they’re biodegradable, but unfortunately they’re just too expensive for the South African market. Hello Joburg • December 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
What made you passionate about green beauty? I’ve been working with Davines for over 10 years now. I was interested in the topic because if you live on the planet, you should obviously have a vague interest in it. Seeing their passion and how achievable it is, is what pushed me more and more in that direction. What are your summer haircare essentials? Definitely the Davines On Protection treatment and their Oi Oil – my hero product. This oil is perfect to take to the beach. The newly launched Oi Butter, which is a very intense take-home product, is also fab. 1 www.carltonhair.com 1 www.issyshair.co.uk E @davidgillson D @gillsondavid Q @gillsondavid Q @issyshairsalon
Compiled by Amber Richarson Images Supplied
What are the top summer hair trends? Balayage and face framing baby lights are big. In fact, Davines has launched a new toning system called View, that’s is great for achieving these trends. It’s a semi-permanent toner that can be used to tone hair however you want it. The point is that if you have the lighter hair you can do natural colours or unusual colours like steel, charcoal or amethyst.
