TOYA DELAZEY
Toya`s musical career started with classical piano at age nine and developed into her enrolling in the Jazz program at Howard College UKZN in 2009. She cites classical influences like Debussy`s `Clair de Lune` as responsible for `unlocking my creativity and influencing the way I construct my chords... and helped me tremendously when it comes to playing by ear and composing music.` A relatively conservative upbringing meant exploring more contemporary genres came only after leaving school. Spotted in 2011, she swiftly signed a deal with Sony and released her debut album - Due Drop - in April 2012. The album has scorched to the top of local and national radio charts, backed by Delazy`s bubbly stage presence during her hectic touring schedule. ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S STARLIGHT EXPRESS Directed by Janice Honeyman
A
t last, one of the best loved and longest running musicals in theatrical history explodes onto the South African stage with a brand new production helmed by acclaimed, award-winning director Janice Honeyman. Produced by the theatre’s Chief Executive Officer, Bernard Jay, the all-South African company promises to take you on the ride of a lifetime - with two hours of speed, spectacle, energy, daredevil stunts and turbo-charged excitement, combined with dazzling sets and costumes, extraordinary roller-choreography and some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most memorable musical hits.
“TWO HOURS OF 8
SPEED, SPECTACLE, ENERGY, DAREDEVIL STUNTS AND TURBO-CHARGED EXCITEMENT” Essentially a rock musical, Starlight Express follows a child’s dream in which his toy train set comes to life; famously the actors perform wearing roller skates. The Joburg Theatre 2013 production of Starlight Express will be the first ever ‘non-replica’ interpretation officially licensed by Lloyd Webber and his Really Useful Theatre Company since the show’s inception in 1984. Starlight Express presents a unique challenge to its actors: everyone performs throughout the entire show on roller skates! So, which South African star performers are already becoming champion roller skaters?
Hello Johannesburg July 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za
“EVERYONE PERFORMS THROUGHOUT THE INTIRE SHOW ON ROLLER SKATES” Rising young star David Schlachter has won the much coveted role of Rusty – the ‘steam engine’ who dreams of glory and the love of his favourite ‘first class coach’, Pearl. David was the winner of the M-Net reality series High School Musical Spotlight South Africa 2008, which awarded him the role of Troy Bolton in the stage show High School Musical. He has since performed in Cats, Grease, Beautiful Creatures, History Boys and most recently, The Phantom of the Opera. David gets to sing the legendary and haunting title song of the show, together with a new love duet written in 2012 by
Lloyd Webber’s son Alastair, I DO. Musical theatre star Carly Graeme has been cast as Pearl. Carly achieved personal triumph with her starring role in Joburg Theatre’s World Cup 2010 production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s musical The Boys In The Photograph and recently featured in the Joburg Theatre pantomime Jack and The Beanstalk. The character of Pearl is a new ‘first-class observation coach’ that is desired by all the train engines in the show! Carly gets to interpret the Lloyd Webber hits He’ll Whistle At Me and Make Up My Heart. The very flashy role of Electra will be performed by Ferdi Gernandt. No stranger to the South African music and theatre industry, Ferdi performed lead roles in Saturday Night Fever, Chicago and We Will Rock You. Electra is the late contender ‘electric
ADVERTORIAL train’ that is electrifyingly sophisticated (the song AC/DC) and charms all the ‘carriages’ with its poise and stature!
“THE ROLE OF ELECTRA WILL BE PERFORMED BY FERDI GERNANDT” The resident tough guy and current champion of the Starlight Express great race, Greaseball, will be played by talented performer Andrew Webster. Audiences will remember him from The Buddy Holly Story, Ons Vir Jou, Saturday Night Fever and Boogie Nights on the South African stage. Andrew’s songs in the show include the ever popular Pumping Iron. Dynamic performer Ziyanda Yako has been cast as Dinah – a sassy country ‘dining coach’ that has caught Greaseball’s heart, but lost it at the same time! Ziyanda’s musical theatre credits include Footloose, Dream Girls, Janice Honeyman’s pantomimes Robinson Crusoe, Cinderella and Jack and The Beanstalk. As Dinah, Ziyanda gets to sing the show-stopping country lament, U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D. Also racing around the Joburg Theatre stage will be South African actors JOANNA ABATZOGLOU, VANESSA BRIERLEY, STEFAN CARSTENS, ZIYA DEVAR, KEATON DITCHFIELD, STEFANIA DU TOIT, TRUDY FREDERICKS, DIANI GERNANDT, REG HART, ZAK HENDRIKZ, FRANK JOUBERT,

Musical theatre credits include Janice Honeyman’s pantomimes Jack and The Beanstalk and Cinderella, as well as the Barnyard’s Theatre production The Summer of Love.
“MULTI-AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR JANICE HONEYMAN LEADS THE TEAM BEHIND STARLIGHT EXPRESS” Multi-award winning director Janice Honeyman leads the team behind Starlight Express. “I am honoured to have been asked to direct this highly spectacular musical,” says Janice. “It’s going to be very challenging but the audiences will have an amazing visual and physical experience. At the heart of it all, I am a storyteller and there is a story to be told which will appeal to the hearts and fantasies of audiences.” Karen Bruce will be choreographing Joburg Theatre’s production.
UK based Karen won a coveted Olivier Award for her choreography of Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures at London’s Donmar Warehouse and currently choreographs BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Karen was most recently represented in London’s West End with her direction of the highly praised Midnight Tango. In South Africa, Karen has previously directed and choreographed Saturday Night Fever and Footloose. Musical Direction will be by Clinton Zerf. Clinton was Musical Director for two previous Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals at Joburg Theatre, Aspects of Love and The Boys In The Photograph. The highly original staging of the musical will be designed by James Macnamara. James designed the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010. His most recent work includes the highly successful production of Maria at the Wexford Festival Opera and he has been nominated twice recently for America’s Tony Award for his work on Rock of Ages and Cyrano de Bergerac.

SIMONSIG GEWURZTRAMINER BACK IN VOGUE
Simonsig Gewürztraminer has an excellent track record as a delicious, well balanced wine enriched by the complex flavours of full sweet late harvest grapes. The 2012 vintage can be enjoyed while youthful and fresh but also promises excellent ageing potential.
Simonsig is back in vogue with their Gewürztraminer as more and more top dining establishments are jumping on board the current sweet wine dominated, world wide trend this season. Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2012, enjoyed as a sundowner or fireside tipple or served as a dessert wine at dinner parties, is a versatile naturally sweet wine with a gentle palate and an elegant freshness. This star-bright, pale golden straw coloured wine is ideal as a soul warmer on its own and beautiful when introduced to friends over rich and spicy winter dishes such as Green Thai curries and Kashmiri curries. Lighter dishes such as smoked salmon or smoked cheeses also complement the Gewürztraminer 2012 exceptionally well.
The Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2012 is available at selected wine outlets country wide and sells for R65 at the cellar door. www.simonsig.co.za

OTTOMAN PALACE A Turkish Delight- By Curtis Tissen
I
t’s more than a restaurant; it’s a place where you can feast like a king. Yes, Ottoman Palace is strikingly beautiful and is a cultural gem hidden on the outskirts of the city. But it’s housed in a place of spiritual and cultural importance. Located in the heart of the Nizamiye Turkish Masjid in Midrand, it makes for a fascinating visit. You might just be headed to Ottoman Palace for a meal, but it’s easy to lose yourself in the architectural design and the stunning ornamented spaces. The look and feel of the restaurant truly speaks of traditional Turkey.
“IT’S MORE THAN A RESTAURANT; IT’S A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN FEAST LIKE A KING” Beyond the spellbinding decoration, the menu boasts authentic Turkish dishes that are sure to send your taste buds on an oriental adventure. If you haven’t heard of Ottoman Palace, it is understandable, it has only been open for four months, but Ferhat Saridogan, the manager and public relations officer is hoping to

get the name out there and customers flocking in. As he puts it: “Turkish food is so popular all around the world. It is everywhere in Europe, America, Australia and Asia. But it is very new for South Africa. But I believe it’s going to be very popular here soon.”
‘OTTOMAN PALACE WILL OFFER THE SOUTH AFRICAN PEOPLE A CULINARY EXPERIENCE MANY HAVE NEVER UNDERTAKEN BEFORE” And it’s easy to see why. Offering a rich variety of traditional cuisine, Ottoman Palace will offer the South African people a culinary experience many have never undertaken before. It’s a far departure from the mundane burgers and steaks we so often find on our menus. Here you’ll find the traditional and exotic, which is elegantly delicious. “The reason why it’s very popular is because of the Ottoman Empire time (where our name comes from) there were a lot of different cultures under their control and they lived together for 600 years. So the different cultures became intertwined over time. So there is a little bit of the Middle East, fused with a little bit of Greek and a

little bits of Asian and even Europe” explains Saridogan.
country’s foods and flavours to the South African people.
The combination of these colourful and vibrant cultures allow people to connect and come together to enjoy the different variety of foods on offer. “We are trying our best to represent as many cultures by offering a diverse variety and we are going to add more and more” says Saridogan. When asked what he’s favourite dish is, he eagerly announced “our most favourite dish is the mixed kebab platter because most of our customers are not familiar with Turkish cuisine so in the mixed kebab platter they taste almost everything. Other than that we have a dish called Iskender which is very special but we only have it on weekends. The reason for that it is made with Donerkebab (shwarma). We make almost everything in house but Turkish delight. We also serve a coffee and a delicious Turkish tea, which we get from the sweet shop next to us.”
“THIS IS A SMALL TURKEY HERE. THER IS A MOSQUE, CLINIC, BAZAAR, PRIMARY & HIGH SCHOOL”
A South African resident for seven years, he never thought about being in the restaurant business. But it was his brother’s passion for Turkish cuisine and his desire to have his brother with him in South Africa that he decided that Ottoman Palace would be perfect to unleash his
Jubilantly, Saridogan describes the look and feel of the restaurant and surroundings shops: “This is a small Turkey here. There is a mosque, clinic, bazaar, primary and high school. So in the bazaar we have a gift shop, carpet shop, and sweet shop with Turkish products, Turkish barber, clothing shop and stationary. And the Mosque is completely separate from us.” You get the feeling that it is a home away from home, with a strong sense of community. But the warm welcoming atmosphere of Ottoman Palace means everyone is welcome to come and experience something this unique. Mooz Brothers, they pride themselves on the high quality, fresh food that they have available for their many customers.
he popular Mooz Brothers deli, in the normally relatively quiet suburb of Sandringham in Eastern Johannesburg, is a hive of activity early on Sunday morning. The deli, which is situated in George Avenue, attracts a large crowd of people, especially for the mouthwatering Sunday morning breakfasts, brunches and take-aways.
“THE DELICIOUS AROMA OF MEALS SUCH AS THE FARMERS OMLETTE AND MAC N CHESE SUPREME FILLS THE AIR” Tables and chairs are lined up on the pavement outside Mooz Brothers, and the delicious aroma of meals such as the Farmers omlette, grilled polenta, mac n cheese supreme, and sandwiches and wraps, fills the air. This is definitely the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely meal, a good cup of coffee or one of the Mooz Brothers famous smoothies. Smoothies that are available include, amongst others, the delightfully named Cowabanga, yoghurt, banana, peanut butter and chocolate; and the Strawberry Hoof It, which contains yoghurt, strawberry and banana. A host of hot and cold drinks are also available.
“BREAKFASTS INCLUDE THE HAYSTACK, PAWPAWLICIOUS AND JET JUNGLE” Breakfasts, which are served until 11h30, include the Haystack, Pawpawlicious and Jet Jungle. Like all of the options available on the menu, the names are original, and at times incredibly humerous. Aside from the breakfasts, salad crop, gour-moo sandwiches and wraps, and the hot stuff, there are also some delicious cakes and desserts. A huge favourite is the Mooz Brothers famous cheesecake. There is also an extensive menu just for the kiddies, with dishes such as ‘eat your
greens’ and ‘cow jumped over the moon’.
“A HUGE FAVOURITE IS THE MOOZ BROTHERS FAMOUS CHEESECAKE” But perhaps what sets Mooz brothers apart from many other establishments, are the great deal of healthy options that they have available. They specialise in a wide variety of health foods, including the popular wheat grass, which lines their counter. Inside, one can browse through the delicious food and fresh produce that they sell. At Mooz Brothers, they pride themselves on the high quality, fresh food that they have available for their many customers. KONG TAI Traditional, authentic Asian flavours in the heart of Sandton
T
he Wedge Shopping Centre, 255 Rivonia Road, Morningside is where you’ll find one of the finest Chinese restaurants in Johannesburg. Traditional, authentic Asian flavours, freshly made food and the perfect bow ties to end off a fine Chinese meal. You’ll also find an impressive selection of goods imported from Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and of course China in the grocery next door the Kong Tai restaurant. It doesn’t get more conventional and classic than this!
“ONE OF THE FINEST CHINESE RESTAURANTS IN JOHANENSBURG” Chinese cooking is one of the greatest methods of cooking. Since ancient time, many factors that have influenced it’s development. Confucius once said: “Eating is the utmost important thing in life.” Cooking Chinese food requires more time and effort, and is considered a very sophisticated art. As a result, many travelers who have visited China consider Chinese cuisines one of the best. Thus it is food that is
26
healthy, fresh and easy to cook. It is food that Chinese families tradition has passed down from generation to generation. We all want to eat and taste traditional cuisine, we want to indulge in nourishing food that looks appetising and also tastes delicious. We all appreciate food that is made with love and we all relish in a cuisine that warms our bellies, and it is exactly this which can be applauded at Kong Tai Restaurant. The dishes contain inspiring recipes, comforting classics and home-made, heavenly cooking. Simply put: the meals are heart-warming.
“ THE DISHES CONTAIN INSPIRING RECIPES, COMFORTING CLASSICS AND HOMEMADE, HEAVENLY COOKING” Moreover being South African and having grown up with a variety of food types and eats, we have all become accustomed to Asian cuisine. So what sets Kong Tai apart from the rest? What makes this Chinese restaurant different and unique? Firstly top-quality ingredients are used, fresh, wholesome ingredients stemmed from the Chinese culture.
Hello Johannesburg July 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za
Secondly the magic that happens in the kitchen is hypnotic. The cooking seems effortless, simple and the love put into each dish is truly evident. When someone like Betty, the owner of Kong Tai, is as passionate, engaged and devoted as she is in the kitchen, it would seem inconceivable not to create such beautiful flavors. In addition, these tastes and flavours are lush and nectarous and are displayed on the menu, which is inviting and loaded with variety. There is an array of pork, duck, beef, fish, chicken and vegetarian options. The Sizzling Kingklip is an absolute favourite while the Shanghai Style Fried, Sliced Pork and Deep-fried Pork Spare Ribs are divine! Some other popular dishes are the Baked Prawns and the Prawns covered in a Black Bean Sauce, while the Roasted Duck is mouth-watering. The Chinese Crispy Beef and the Chilli Chicken are winners and the Fried Lamb with Cumin is delightful. There is also a generous sushi menu with daring options of white fish, eel, clam and octopus but if you would rather remain on the safe side, the traditional California Rolls, sashimi and fashion sandwiches are delectable. And if you are look-
ing for something innovative why not opt for the Deep-fried Chicken and Mango roll or the salmon and mango roll?
“THE SHANGHAI STYLE FRIED, SLICED PORK AND DEEPFRIED PORK SPARE RIBS ARE DIVINE” Furthermore, Betty, not only focuses on the menu but always makes sure her staff are friendly and attentive. She believes in the best service, optimum ingredients and incomparable Chinese food! Betty ensures that Kong Tai also hosts brilliant functions of up to 150, plus there are 3 private dining rooms accommodating up to 12 people for more intimate functions, and also a separate smoking section, which seats 30. Thus there is no justification to not visit the wonderful Kong Tai Restaurant. Distinctive food that provides you with fabulous flavours and pleasures galore. Two of the exhibition spaces on the tour are being upgraded using modern technology. An exhibition hall, which invites you on a journey back in time to investigate the history of beer, uses lighting effects provided by 1 500 quart beer bottles, each adapted to function like a pixel on a screen.“This matrix wall will provide the backdrop for an introductory, narrated experience that includes two embedded LCD screens. The display is custom made right down to each of the 1 500 LED pixels and to our knowledge this will be the first of its kind in South Africa,” said Mooi.

he ancient art of brewing beer has been brought to life at the South African Breweries’ (SAB) World of Beer for the past 18 years and now the walking tour route is being enhanced with new technology. From being welcomed by Charles Glass to learning how the ancient Mesopotamians brewed their thick, sweet beer, how different recipes spread to countries in Europe, and how brew masters from around the world defined some of the beers you know and love today, the interactive tour has become one of Johannesburg’s most popular tourism destinations.
“With the upgrade we hope to make the tour even more memorable for new visitors and offer those visitors who have previously been with us something new and exciting – giving them a reason to return,” said World of Beer General Manager Clive Mooi.
The second new feature will be in Hathor’s Hall, named after the ancient Egyptian goddess, which will take visitors 6 000 years back to when beer was first brewed. ”Here, the story of the origins of beer in Egypt will be reinterpreted through a light-hearted animation by award-winning animation studio Tin Cup”. The visual display area will be developed by Digital Fabric to allow for the animated film to be played out as a holographic effect. It will be the only permanently installed holographic effect of its kind in South Africa. “Digital Fabric and Totem Media were tasked with the enhancements which aim to keep the offering as contemporary and as current as possible, even for people who have previously done the tour,” said Mooi. * The SAB World of Beer’s tour route will be closed from 8 May 2013 due to this upgrade. The new enhanced tour will re-open on Tuesday 14 May 2013. Only tours will be affected. Conferencing, pub lunches and events will continue as per usual.

Q&A WITH JESSIE DOUCHA A peace of her art by Bianca Maletsky
J
essie Doucha was born in Johannesburg in January 1986 and has been working as a freelance artist for the past 10 years with an array of mediums. In 2007 she taught art classes part-time while working as a gallery assistant at Mojo Modern Gallery. Jessie also studied a four year course in the Alexander technique. In her final year of the course she moved to Cape Town to complete her qualification and worked at Raw Vision Gallery as a part time curator. After completing her Alexander qualification she travelled to South East Asia whereupon she gained clarity and realization of her life’s direction, so upon her return in 2012 she enrolled in The University of Johannesburg to obtain her degree in Visual Art. Jessie is currently in her second year and has been acknowledged as one of UJ’s top achievers. Jessie has also exhibited works in a few group exhibitions over the past two years and her goal is to graduate cum laude and eventually put together a solo exhibition. Travelling to new places and participating in artist residencies all over the world is definitely on Jessie’s top priority! Jessie has most recently been commissioned to produce two pieces of artwork to be displayed at the new Dore flagship store in Sandton City. I asked Jessie a few questions about art, life and her work with Dore:
Q: If you had to rank the parts of your artistic career that you feel most satisfied with, what would be on top?
A: I feel extremely grateful and blessed to be doing what I love and growing as an artist. With each project I complete I grow more confident and trusting of my talent and skills. I am mostly satisfied with where my career has been and where it will take me. This particular job was a definite highlight.
like to believe that Johannesburg city dwellers expose themselves to the art world and integrate it into their lives. Art can be a rich form of passion, inspiration and creativity as well as an outlet to express and comment on important issues we face as a South African Society.
Q:
Do you believe that South Africans have a chance to succeed, a chance to dream, to become a world-renowned artist?
A: There is definitely an abundance of artistic talent in South Africa. I think one’s success as an artist is a personal journey that will take one wherever one needs to be in life. Working on a career is a consistent effort and it requires passion, discipline, and tenacity. Personally, the most important way in becoming recognized is to constantly involve myself in the industry, connect with other artists and work hard on perfecting my craft. It also helps to surround myself with people who support and believe in me but most importantly and also most difficult is to constantly believe in myself. Q:
What was it like to collaborate with Dore? And what does the brand and concept of the Dore Store mean to you?
A: Working with Dore was an exciting collaboration. I acquired this job through a Cape Town based art agency- SJ Artists- run by a good friend of mine, Shani Judes. She emailed me the brief and I was immediately intrigued by the concept. I definitely appreciate how Dore has pushed the boundaries in terms of what is defined as art and fashion. Q:
Where did you find the creative spark for your art pieces in the Dore store?
A: I have to credit the idea and con-

cept to the Dore team. I was simply hired to execute the artwork, which I couldn’t have done without my talented assistant and cousin LennyDee Doucha. Charcoal is a medium that somehow inspires itself. It’s expressive, forgiving and is full of life. The added textural dimension of the string art remodeled a simple charcoal drawing into a unique form of sculpture.
A: Art has simply become a way of

work was 4 days. The nature of live artwork is such that the environment around you determines the atmosphere in which one works. Sandton city is a very busy place. Working in the hustle and bustle was certainly a unique experience. The feedback from the public was amazing and very exciting as an artist, as it’s a rare opportunity to share the process of making art.
Q: When you’re on a brief hiatus from your work schedule, what do you love to do in Joburg? A: I honestly love spending time at
home with my boyfriend, cartoons and tea and rusks. Afternoon walks with my dogs are an essential as well as being out doors whenever I can. On weekends I get together with friends and family.
I Love going to galleries, watching live music performances and adventuring just outside of Joburg to go rock climbing or hiking. It certainly seems that Jessica is ascending on her path to prosperity! Having already exhibited her work in a few group shows over the past years, and a goal to graduate cum laude and eventually work towards a solo exhibition, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her! A true inspiration for fellow and future South African artists. Peace and love

BREAKING THROUGH THE ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC SCENE. with dark, deep and sophisticated sonic textures combined with a groovy guitar riff.
anessa Holliday, established Capetonian DJ and one of the few female producers in South Africa presents her first Extended Play (EP) release, Deep Layers, available on Beatport & ITunes from the 12th of July 2013. Deep Layers is inspired by her cavernous love and passion for electronic dance music and deeply incorporates the many layers for her creative expression. Deep Layers represents the very essence what music means to Vanessa. “Music is an extension of myself, my emotions, my personality and my soul,” she says. Side A of Vanessa’s EP features “Berlin Strasse” this track was inspired by her love for Berlin after her first visit to the city, fascinated by the diversity of the people and especially the underground music scene. Lo-fi analog drums from the basement with sine blips dropping down create this moody atmospheric track. It is infused with subtle 5th chord tech progressions, over laced with vocals, synth stabs and lush pads from the backyards of Berlin. Side B features “Black Beauty”, another heartfelt track by Vanessa layered
Vanessa is constantly pushing boundaries, experimenting with special transformational and vibrational frequencies to create her own distinctive sound that truly resonates positively with humanity. She offers music that in its purist form, expresses freedom, truth, love and the expansion of consciousness. Willing to always learn more and further develop her production talents while journeying into the magical layers of music she completed her Advanced Music Production Diploma with the Soul Candi Institute of Music and visits the Red Bull Music Studios in Cape Town, where she can constantly improve her skills as she believes that you can never know too much in the world of production. “You learn something new every day,” she says. With her fingers in a world of soulful and deep melodic music-making, Vanessa is signed to Heads & Tails Record Label, by far one of the most established deep/nu-disco house labels in South Africa. Vanessa has been DJing for almost ten years, growing from club and festival
performer, to radio presenter, savvy businesswoman and producer, taking her love for sublime beats on the journey. With roots in vinyl and playing progressive trance, Vanessa is one of the first female performers to sustain the ever-changing scene, exploring sounds, technology, dancing, singing, fashion and even piano lessons, as an intrinsic part of her creative expression. Today, her music is inspired by a fresher house sound, still influenced with a seductive, melodic undertone and generously applied with a passion for Apple Mac and Traktor precision. She favours a blend of euphoria, femininity and finesse and indulges
the productions of Alex Niggemann, Audiofly, Maya Jane Coles, Los Suruba, Dinky, Deniz Kurtel & Maceo Plex among others. Vanessa currently hosts “The Underground Radio show”– “you are what you listen to” on 2oceansvibe radio with co-host Kirsti every Monday night from 8pm-10pm. BOOKS VUVUZELANATION- ZAPIRO ON SA SPORT 1995-2013
V
uvuzelaNation is a new collection of more than 250 iconic cartoons from Zapiro, the nation’s sharpest cartoonist, tracing the story of sport in the new South Africa. Although he is primarily viewed as an intensely political cartoonist, Zapiro has produced a wealth of cartoons on sport through the years and, among his many awards, he became the first cartoonist to receive the CNN African Journalist of the Year Sport Award in 2001. South African sport in the postapartheid era has taken the nation on
a bewildering rollercoaster ride and this unique collection, with text from Cape Town journalist and broadcaster Mike Wills, captures that historic and emotional journey in all its highs, lows and controversies. In VuvuzelaNation Zapiro portrays an extraordinary cast of colourful characters including Louis Luyt, Hansie Cronje, Jomo Sono, Herschelle Gibbs, Bryan Habana, Peter de Villiers, Benni McCarthy, Caster Semenya and Oscar Pistorius.Adding to the value of the collection, a number of Zapiro’s cartoons which originally appeared in black and white appear here for the first time in
superb colour. Zapiro has worked for the Mail & Guardian since 1994, the Sunday Times since 1998 and has contributed to many other major newspapers. He has published seventeen bestselling annuals and The Mandela Files. Among Zapiro’s numerous local and international awards are the Principal Prince Claus Award awarded to him in 2005 by the Prince Claus Fund of the Netherlands, the Mondi Shanduka Journalist of the Year Award in 2005, the Freedom to Publish prize awarded to him in 2012 by the International Publishers Association (IPA) and two honorary doctorates. CONSTITUTION HILL Located in Braamfontein Johannesburg, Constitution Hill has a very intricate and complex history which dates to 1892 and was formerly utilized as a prison during the South African War. Later on in the early 20th century more buildings were added for black prisoners, women prisoners and those awaiting trials. This is an excellent place to learn about our past ancestors who were imprisoned, and to take a deeper look at how they survived.

MOTORING Best Cars To Take You Through Jozi AFFORDABLE LUXURY BRAND MG BACK IN FORCE
A NEW BENCHMARK IN PERFORMANCE, DYNAMISM & EFFICIENCY: NEW E 63 AMG Mercedes-AMG continues to champion performance, dynamism and efficiency: the new E 63 AMG is now also available as a particularly exclusive and powerful S-Model with an output of 430 kW, 800 Newton metres of torque.
It has been nearly two years since the return of the iconic British brand MG to South African shores. Its initial offering comprised mainly of the MG6 fastback and sedan models, but the range is set to expand significantly in the near future. During the previous two years, MG has built a comprehensive dealer network, which currently stands at 15 dealers spread across South Africa. East London, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Umhlanga, Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Kimberley, Upington and Cape Town all already host MG dealers, and there are plans in place to further expand the network.
“MG RANGE SET TO EXPAND SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE NEAR FUTURE” The MG3 is MG’s brand new challenger. The first of the new vehicles will be rolling off MG’s plant shortly, with a local launch planned for the last quarter of 2013. The new vehicle will initially only be available with a four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. More models will be added to the range in due course. Until the arrival of the MG3, MGSA is focussing on its established MG6, which is available in both fastback and sedan versions. With prices starting at only R239,900 for the 1.8T Comfort model, the MG6 represents true value in a luxury package. Included in the price is 1 year AA Roadside Assistance, a service plan for 3years 90,000 km. The vehicle comes with an 3 year 100,000 km warranty. An impressive service interval of 24,000 km applies to all MG6 models.
The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine continues to be the absolute pinnacle of efficiency: the combination of high performance and low fuel consumption remains unrivalled by any other competitor in the segment worldwide.
HIGH PERFORMANCE COMBINATION HAS GOODYEAR/ HI-Q CAR WINNER FEELING GOOD On tar as well as out on the racetrack and skidpan, the pulseracing Volkswagen Golf GTI and its Goodyear high performance tyres make a combination that has what it takes to stay calm under pressure even when the going gets fast and furious. This sporty car was the coveted prize in a nationwide competition in which Goodyear and Hi-Q offered customers the opportunity to win either this fully specified vehicle or a Volkswgen Amarok – their choice – together with an appropriate advanced driving course.
“GOODYEAR’S HIGH PERFORMANCE TYRES BEAR TESTIMONY TO THE COMPANY’S 111 YEAR HISTORY” For lucky Cape Town–based winner, Clinton Hagan, the choice was clear. He took delivery of his Volkswagen Golf GTI earlier this year and more recently hit the track at the VW Driving Academy in Kyalami to put this vehicle and its tyres through their paces. Specially designed to provide shorter braking distances on both wet and dry surfaces as well as high performance handling and improved fuel efficiency, Goodyear’s high performance tyres bear testimony to the company’s 111 year history and commitment to innovation and excellence.
This powerful V8 engine has been uprated from 386 kW and 700 Nm to 410 kW and 720 Nm of torque. With this range, Mercedes-AMG is premiering high-performance passenger car models geared to driving dynamics. Acceleration to 100 km/h from a standing start in 4.1 seconds provides the E 63 AMG S with a comfortable lead over the entire competition; the top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).
“ACCELERATION TO 100 KM/H IN 4.1 SECONDS” On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generates a maximum output of 430 kW and maximum torque of 800 Newton metres – representing an increase of 20 kW over the AMG Performance package which was previously available as an option. This enhanced performance and power results from adaptation of the engine application, an increase in peak pressure and a rise in the charge pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. At 410 kW and 720 Nm, the basic model also boasts an increase of 24 kW and 20 Nm over its. As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, comes standard with the standard class-leading PremiumDrive maintenance package of 6-years/100,000 km with no customer contribution. The recommended retail prices are R1 275 604 for the E 63 AMG and R1 396 604 for the “s” model.

TIPPING ETIQUETTE IN SA It is strongly recommended to tip in South Africa, as the tourism, hospital ity and service industries more than often employ people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and many of them do not earn a large basic salary or sometimes don’t even earn a basic salary at all. Thus they rely on tips that they receive from customers. Tipping is usually calculated between 10% and 15% on your bill.
