I

know we’ve had a mild winter so far but I wouldn’t get too comfortable as we still have July and August to get through before the first buds of spring arrive. Don’t let the cold Highveld chill get you down though, as my team and I are on hand to recommend the very best entertainment, dining, shopping and lifestyle destinations in the City of Gold. If you’ve decided to stay in and have a little snuggle time with that special someone in your life, then why not experiment with an indoor picnic? Check out page 6 for our top tips on how to create the perfect and most romantic feast by the fire, which will not only keep you warm but who knows, might even encourage a little extra romance! On the cover this month we’re showcasing one of Joburg’s newest landmarks, The MARC. This iconic commercial and lifestyle district is set to open at the end of July and will offer visitors a unique experience focused on convenience, fine dining and pure indulgence.

Hello Joburg • July 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Our restaurant of the month is Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant which is situated in the South of Joburg. This historic Joburg eatery was opened in 1992 and still offers the same delicious meals, awesome vide and impeccable service that I remember from our Sunday lunches there as a child. This July we celebrate 100 years of Tata Madiba, so we felt it fitting to highlight some of the lesser known Madiba tribute sites. Check out page 45 for our top 5 locations in South Africa where you can learn about the father of our nation. I am a huge animal lover, however, I think that some people take their love of animals too far… On our entertainment page, we’ve included a very strange YouTube channel called Relax My Cat which is dedicated to proving new beats to soothe your kitty’s soul. Whatever you decide to do this July please remember to keep warm (even if that means calling up an old bae and snuggling by the fire). I find that the best way to keep warm in the chilly months is by lighting a fire in your soul through adventure and new experiences! I hope you enjoy reading on. Best,

REMEMBERING MADIBA July isn’t just any ordinary month ... it’s the month that we celebrate Mandela Day. If you’re still not sure how you’ll be spending Mandela Day this year, check out our list of littleknown Madiba tributes. @biancablancmusic

Bianca grabbed a record deal with Just Music after she was a part of the ‘Just Inspired Live Acoustic sessions Project’ last year. The singer/songwriter recorded and released her debut single, ‘Butterflies’ while in her final year of school last year. Talk about juggling two huge tasks at once! The catchy, sweet song hit number one on the 5fm Pop Top 10 at 10 and her debut album is due this year.

@paxtonfielies_ Idols SA alumni, Paxton is about to soar far beyond the title of being last year’s winner. She released her debut album, ‘This is me’ and it is a seamless blend of Pop and RnB with an African feel. Her angelic voice is wise beyond her years and we can’t wait to see what her future holds!

Perfect

THE PICNIC WITH A TWIST.

Turn up the heat without leaving the house this winter!

If you’re looking to do something a little different for date night this winter, but you also don’t feel like leaving the house, then we just might have the thing for you. Ever heard of an indoor picnic? Well if not, then let us fill you in on your new fave way to spend those chilly days or nights. It’s perfect for an ultra-romantic evening or if you’re not into all the cheese (pun intended), you can also tone it down for a fun and casual date night.

How to: Rub the pot down with a clove of garlic. Add 1 cup of wine (per 500g of cheese) to the pot. Do not let the wine come to a boil. Grate your cheese. Coat your grated cheese with cornstarch (this allows the cheese to mix well with the wine).

6

Hello Pretoria • July 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

How to: Lather two Marie biscuits with a generous amount of Nutella. Stick a cocktail stick through a marshmallow and grill it over a flame until it’s golden. Remove the marshmallow and place it in between the two Marie biscuits. Squash it all together and enjoy!

TIP: Remove an item of clothing every time you drop something in the fondue pot.

k

On the side: a variety of small snacks such as pickled onions, gherkins, cold meats, grapes and anything else you fancy as an accompaniment.

You will need: Marshmallows (R14.99), Marie biscuits (R11.99), Nutella chocolate spread (R29.99 for 180g) and cocktail sticks.

e.co.u

101 Lancaster Ave, Craighall Park, Randburg, 2196 Don’t forget about the dessert! Instead of the classic strawberries and chocolate, try Smores!

agazin

Cheese fondue how to: You will need: A bottle of white wine, fresh baguette bread, cheese (a 50/50 mix of Gruyère and Emmentaler), a clove of garlic, cornstarch, lemon juice and a fondue set. If you don’t have a fondue set, you can make your fondue on the stove, but you will have to go back and re-heat it occasionally if the cheese starts to stiffen.

We love supporting local! Visit the man who sells artisanal cheese right outside Wine & Liquor in Craighall… buy some delectable cheese and pick up your wine at the same time.

The setting Create that ‘wow’ effect for your partner! Clear your living room floor area by moving the furniture out of the way and get rid of any breakables. Set down your softest blanket in the center of the room and add a few cushions to sit on. If you have a low table, put it the middle. Sprinkle rose petals around the area and light some candles. To set the scene, put up fairy lights on the wall or on the floor around where you will be sitting. Don’t be afraid to go over the top. The more romantic the room feels, the better! Pinterest is your friend! Place all your goodies on the blanket before your partner arrives and enjoy an evening at home you won’t forget.

A

n indoor picnic obviously requires fantastic food (and the perfect company of course). The best approach to picnic food is having a variety of goodies to snack on over a period of time. You don’t want to spend the evening in the kitchen, so we suggest cheese and wine as the order of the day. Ditch the boring cheese platter though and try out a cheese fondue instead.

EXPLORE CHINA

in Cyrildene!

People of

JOBURG

Zubeida Goolam

Step out of South Africa and onto a bustling street in Beijing, right around the corner in Jozi’s very own Chinatown, Cyrildene. Expect to be transported to Asia with signage in Mandarin, oriental décor and store owners that don’t speak a word of English. Don’t go down this street looking for luxury, because you won’t find it here. Make sure you visit over Chinese New Year for a spectacular experience, but until then, check out these three authentic spots! DERRICK AVENUE’S STREET MARKET We love girl power here at Hello Joburg! So, when we got the chance to sit down with the co-founder of BrandTruth, Integrated Content Practice™, a digital agency, we couldn’t have been more thrilled. Zubeida who hails from Pietermaritzburg but is now a Johannesburg native, has an impressive repertoire including content creation, multiple levels of marketing and storytelling. We sat down with her to find out more.

Your grocery shopping sorted! Wander down the popular Derrick Avenue and you will find stall upon stall of Chinese goods and fresh food. You won’t find a more unpretentious shopping experience. There is a wealth of fruit and vegetables, as well as chicken, fish, calamari as well as more traditional offerings. Derrick Ave, Cyrildene, Johannesburg

FISHERMAN’S PLATE An abundance of flavour! Fisherman’s Plate is the definition of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. The setting is not going to stay with you, but the food definitely will. We recommend going with a bunch of friends to sit around the lazy Susan table and try a variety of dishes. Their seafood is phenomenal (hence the name), but they also cater to everyone’s taste with an array of food that is fantastic. Try their chilli crab, which is to die for! The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license, but you’re welcome to bring your own. 18 Derrick Ave, Cyrildene, Johannesburg 1 011 622 0480 NING SIAM THAI MASSAGE Don’t leave without one of these! Right on Derrick avenue is this little gem. You simply cannot visit Chinatown and leave without a traditional massage. Ning Siam Thai Massage offers a variety of treatments including full body at a very reasonable price compared to places outside of Cyrildene. You will leave feeling completely refreshed. This place is definitely a treat! 15 Derrick Ave, Cyrildene, Johannesburg. 1 079 136 9275

Tell us an interesting fact about working in the creative digital industry? The digital industry is a SUPER fast paced environment - from creation to consumption. You can’t be caught sleeping, either as a brand or as a content creator. It’s a great space for creatives to play in, and there’s never a dull moment - I love it. How do you think social media has changed the way people view content? People now expect content on demand. Brands have to remain relevant to be able to remain top of mind. Storytelling is key to capturing their attention. What is your favourite thing to do to get your creative juices flowing? I love to listen to music and I find that it takes me to a good place when I want to do some deep work. What drove you to establish your own business? I got tired of hearing the word “no”. I got tired of trying to convince the leadership teams that digitallyled storytelling strategies were the way to go, and I got bored of waiting for them to catch up. Your favourite place in Joburg to unwind after a long week? I’m a bit of a homebody so I love my home in Lonehill, but if I were to wander the streets it would be Parkhurst for the hippie feel and definitely exploring markets in Braam or Fourways. What are you listening to in your car at the moment? I’m listening to The Best of Fela Kuti - he’s an African musical genius. So much music is inspired by him, even today. Your favourite Instagrammer at the moment? I have two. Craig Howes is a phenomenal local photographer, plus he was my landlord once. And Tracee Ellis Ross - she’s an actress, feminist, comedian, style icon and a fantastic all rounder. She’s my spirit person. Hello Joburg • July 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Thrifting for dummies “I’m Gonna Pop Some Tags”

irst, let’s start off with what thrifting actually is. Thrifting is the ultimate example of one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Picture rows upon rows of pre-loved items, from clothing, vinyls and books to household décor. If you can imagine it, you’ll probably find it in a thrift store. It’s not glamourous by any means, you’ll have to dig through a lot of junk, but the outcome is so rewarding and

STEP 1: Our obsession at the moment is this newly launched Skin SOS primer by Clarins R370. Shade: Rose. We love it because it minimizes signs of tiredness and revitalizes the complexion. So right after prepping and cleansing your face (and applying an SPF of course), apply the primer all over the face. It will give you the all-natural glow you’re after. Zero foundation needed!

STEP 5: Now it’s time for the VA VA voom. For luminous looking skin try the Catrice Deluxe Glow Highlighter R89 Simply apply it to cheekbones; tip of your nose and to your brow bones. It’s that easy.

STEP 2: Thanks to Kylie Jenner we all want fuller, plumper pouts, right? Apply a layer of Babor firming lip booster R910 to lips and you’ll notice an instant smoothing effect. It significantly reduces fine lines and wrinkles and restores definition to the lip contour – who needs a hyaluronic acid injection?! Not after this miracle worker

TO TAKE IT ALL OFF: BioNike 2 phase eye makeup remover R135, It removes all makeup, even waterproof. Plus, it’s glutenfree, preservative-free and fragrance-free.

STEP 6: The final step is to add a pop of colour to the lips, if you’re looking for something more natural try the BioNike Defence Color Lip-gloss R95 or if you want ultimate superwoman power then wear the Elizabeth Arden March on Beautiful Color Moisturising Lipstick in Red Door Red R295

STEP 3: Time for on fleek brows. It’s the one thing you can get into shape without exercising. Apply the Gosh eyebrow pencil in brown R142 especially when you have limited time, it’s so easy to simply fill in the blanks. Plus, this one lasts all day long.

Top 3 facials

to save your dehydrated skin

You do not need an excuse to visit this fabulous flower inspired salon, it is everything that a woman could ever dream of. Floral wallpaper, the friendliest service, champagne Fridays, the fresh smell of orchids and the most luxurious treatments available. Basically, if you plan to be there for an hour, add an extra hour because it is one of those places that you never want to leave. Let’s get down to the facial treatment, we had our first ever Derma Plane. Don’t be deterred by the blade because this treatment does not hurt one little bit. All the tiny blade does is remove the dead skin cells off the top layer of the face. It’s quick and painless but the results are immediate. Afterwards, the therapist will place a deep exfoliator onto the surface of the skin, which tingles for a minute or two. You won’t believe the glow and radiance that you’ll see instantly. Your skin will look brighter, plumper and more youthful. Tip: We didn’t experience any peeling post treatment but be prepared for that. 1 011 883 2760 @graceskinandwellness

From the champagne sangria which is champagne infused with berries to gin cocktails with a variety of mixes and the classic Tipo Tinto rum with raspberry, the menu impresses even before you’ve had a chance to think about the food. t’s certainly been an overwhelming adventure and Vusi is still wrapping his head around the accolade. “It’s freaking unreal, no matter how many people say well done I still don’t believe it.” The final leg of the international competition saw Vusumuzi prepare and present his signature dish to a jury of seven international judges, known as the Seven Sages. He competed under the guidance and mentorship of DW Eleven-13’s Marthinus Ferreira. The dish was a throwback and a tip of the hat to his childhood. “It is called Isicupho which is a composition of a duck crown which was aged for 5 weeks in grass. Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review…THE BIG MOUTH SANDTON

T

he Big Mouth is on everyone’s radar at the moment, so I thought to pay them a visit and see what all the hype was about. The word on the street is that they serve the best sushi in the city. I’ll be the judge of that.

Whether you’re into sunny patios, white marble sushi bars, glittering walls or contemporary design, this impeccable space has got you covered! Situated in the greatest location in Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Square, this eatery is where Jozi’s elite schmoozes. Put it this way if I spotted Cyril having brunch here after his morning walk, I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s swanky and sophisticated and yip you guessed it slightly over pretentious. The menu pulls out all the stops. Not only do they serve sushi, but they also refer to themselves as a grill. They offer poke bowls, soups, buns, tacos, pans and small plates (I almost choked on my tempura biltong when I saw the prices though - most small plates are around the R68 mark heading up to R125). The staff is well rehearsed and authentically friendly, and the managers generously offer their advice as what to order from the extensive menu. Helpful indeed but just be careful as many items have the dreaded SQ. Lunch began with a small bowl of edamame beans. Just a side note, Woolworths sells their edamame beans (400g) for R54.99 whilst a small plate of edamame at Big Mouth is R68. Were they the best edamame beans ever? No. The Crispy Rice signature sushi is a non-negotiable order (R103 for four pieces). These spicy salmon crispy rice squared pillows are melt-in-your-mouth delicious with blow your mind kinda flavour. Be warned if you’re more of an authentic Japanese sushi, zero bells and whistles kinda guy then this isn’t the spot for you. Their sushi is loaded with caviar and mayo and is decadently deep-fried, crisped up and pickled. For mains, overwhelmed by the options, a humble choice of fish and chips sounded perfect- decadently tasty and finely prepared with chips that were a perfect accompaniment. They have a comprehensive cocktail and wine menu, which will keep everyone blissfully content. We recommend throwing in the Litchi It to Me cocktail because after guzzling down all those calories you’ll need something light and refreshing. P.S. This spot is faultless when it comes to an indulgent cheat day because they serve deepfried Oreos with a glass of milk on the side. It’s a childhood celebration on a plate and is reason enough to visit, just make sure it’s after payday.

THE RESTAURATEUR

Taste of

Eloise & Alex Windebank - Farro

With impressive résumés citing the likes of iconic London gastropub, The Ape and Bird, dynamic husband and wife team Eloise and Alex Windebank traded the overrun restaurant scene for the grit of Johannesburg, to pursue their collective dream of opening a restaurant.

H

aving spent just four months eating their way across the United States, the couple had an idea for their passion project; but getting to know the city of Johannesburg and its’ needs took more time than they originally thought. With a lack of freshly baked artisanal bread, their first endeavour on South African soil was the Kramerville Bakery, a small commercial space set in a plumbing yard that had crowds queuing for Alex’s famous doughnuts, and later the dynamic duo’s Great Roast lunches and dinners.

Words Taryn Louch Image Supplied

Two years later, their passion for preparing food evolved into Farro, an intimate space in Illovo, fondly named after the Italian heritage grain. At Farro, what you see is what you get, and the couple have created a restaurant that they would like to eat at. Serving up modern European cuisine, Alex’s casual fine dining fare is designed to be delicious, with his tweezers only coming out to pin bonefish, when it appears on

In a few short months Farro is being celebrated for the theatrical egg yolk raviolo, freshly prepared and served with butternut and sage; and the truffle cheese toastie, sumptuously served on buttery brioche. With the pork belly as a firm favourite on the menu, the trimmings change to suit the season, and every dish is complemented with Farro’s boutique wine selection. W

alking through the large double doors you would be forgiven for thinking you had stepped back in time and were about to join Frieda Kahlo and her friends for some food and time spent pontificating on the arts. The door and window frames are old-school and the walls adorned with trinkets from artworks to shelves holding a veritable treasure trove of cool old artefacts. The tables and chairs are wooden, and slightly dinged and dented, perfect for the rustic ambience of the venue. In the corner under the stairs, the projector slowly rotates images of life in South America from the late 1800’s and the music is old school traditional Argentinian, if dancers wended their way down the stairs and put on a show in the middle of the restaurant, we would not bat an eyelid. The menu is extensive and the two owners, Oscar and Bernado have literally recreated the cooking of their youth with homemade recipes like mouth-watering empanadas and assado’s to suit all palates. Bernado greets us like he has known us all his life, and insisted on checking in every so often and

making sure our wine glasses were not empty. We suggest you kick off your Argentinian feast with some Tapas to share. Choose from ceviche and risotto to the aforementioned empanadas (which are melt in your mouth btw!) and so much more. For mains do try the Lomo fillet and the Asado short ribs were also a hit – the meat is perfectly prepared, and we loved that we could watch it being cooked in the open plan kitchen. This is a true and authentic little Argentina situated in the heart of Joburg, with grills to tickle your taste buds and good company to welcome you in…Enjoy! Tip – use your GPS or Waze to get you there, as the streets are a bit of a maze, and there are several one-way streets that can be a bit confusing. Best dish – the churros for dessert. If you do not have a sweet tooth, you will when this arrives on your table. 303 Fox St, Jeppestown, Johannesburg 1 011 614 0264

24 HOURS IN JOZI

a little

LATE LUNCH We usually advocate an early morning when trying to pack a whole bunch of cool Jozi things into 24 hours, but given our European slant this month, we’re starting things a little later so go ahead and have a guilt-free lie in. But by the time you do wake up, you’ll be pretty hungry. For the ultimate in Italian style lunching, try one of these: Tortellino d’Oro: This is hands down one of the best places in Joburg for authentic handmade pasta, imported cheese and marinated artichokes. Where: Oaklands Shopping Centre, Pretoria Road & Victoria Street, Oaklands

38

Hello Joburg • July 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

La Cucino de Ciro: Essentially an ode to his father, Ciro Molinaro has been serving his authentic Italian food for over a decade. Try the mussels. Where: 43 7th Ave, Parktown North, Randburg.

IN VINO VERITAS Ok, so it’s actually a Latin phrase but we’re going with it. The phrase translates to "in wine, truth", suggesting a person under the influence of alcohol is more likely to speak their hidden thoughts. But these aren’t mediaeval times, we’re not in Rome anymore and most people say what they want to anyway – wine or not. But it is winter in Joburg after all. Wine Menu: Whether buying for yourself or as a gift, Wine Menu is the place to go. This hole in the wall at the Blubird Shopping centre is home to Corlien Morris who is the master of wine. He stocks an eclectic mix of the greats as well as the never-seenbefores. Where: Blubird Shopping Centre, corner of Atholl Oaklands Road and Fort Street (just off Corlett Drive)

The oneNINEone menu at The Terrace Cigar and Wine Bar: We’re not usually the snobby type but they say that a venue that has a classy wine vessel, usually has a good wine selection. So, we suggest combining the hotel’s signature restaurant wine list with the Terrace Cigar Bar for some of the best local vintages as well as a few interesting international friends that are worth meeting. Where: Hyatt Regency Johannesburg, 191 Oxford Rd, Rosebank

YOU SCREAM, WE SCREAM We know it's winter in Jozi but we’re on Italian time and making the best of it while we can. This month there’s only one place we’re going to get something sweet after pasta and wine (besides bed treats of course) and that’s to the Sally Williams Ice-Cream store in Melrose Arch. And there’s only one thing we’re having – the pink Turkish Delight please! Where: Atholl Oaklands Road, 60 Melrose Blvd, Melrose North

Words by Carly Ritz

Here we are in the 7th month of a year that is certainly galloping past. So, what better way to slow down the pace and enjoy this cosy month than with delicious pasta and wine – so here’s 24 hours Italian style, a tad slower than usual, but we’ll make up for it next month with a run.

Franco’s: Another institution for old-school Italian style eating, these traditional dishes will take you to the heart of Italy. Try the Alla Siciliana with salty anchovies, olives and capers. Yum! Where: Upper Level, Office No.7, Parkview Center, 54 Tyrone Ave, Parkview

TO SHRUG OFF THE

Winter Blues Cosy Up at These Top 5 Picks BLAQUE WINE BAR & GRILL HOUSE Why HJ Recommends: Because they believe wine is poetry in a bottle and because of their Teriyaki Beef sarmie and home-style chips. The menu celebrates South Africa and that’s what we think is missing in our city, a truly traditional and authentic South African eatery. The simple space is fit to sidestep the cold because of its snug and toasty atmosphere and it allows for a textbook Jozi night out to meander through Bolton Corner. FARRO Why HJ Recommends: it’s roots in Modern European cooking, prohibition era cocktails and a love of wild wine lends itself to the ideal winter dining destination. (P.S Wines are sourced from renegade South African winemakers, giving quieter varietals space to shine.) It is cosy and intimate and what more could you possibly demand other than good food and good wine oh and a husband and wife team behind the concept. Indulge in a truffle cheese toastie for 30 bucks or try their veal chops with pot-roasted potatoes, or skip all that and start with dessert, a decadent sticky toffee pudding, with poached pear and coffee ice cream. GREI

Why HJ Recommends: Guys and gals if its fresh, seasonal, sustainable and organic produce you’re after, there is only one chef we fully trust and that is Chef James Diack. Not only have we been to his family farm- Brightside, but we have also witnessed his fervour for ethical eating. So, what to order to beat the winter chill? How about the wood-fired roast chicken served with crispy potato wedges and lemon butter jus? Enough said.

Why HJ Recommends: This is what we call clever cooking, Head Chef, Candice Philip has created gastronomic flair at its finest. Grei restaurant just launched inside the luxurious Saxon hotel and with well-considered flavours and textures; it’s a victory for fine dining. The cuisine is succulent and textural, with herbaceous and natural themes. We recommend booking for a special occasion as it is a rather hefty amount to pay for a casual night out. Also make sure you have a few hours to spare as it is a six-course tasting menu.

BLANK BAR Why HJ Recommends: We cannot get enough of this brand-new concept bar, perhaps because it is just around the corner from our offices or perhaps we’re just plain addicts. Whatever it may be this bar concept is genius. So, don’t believe the rumours, this is not a pop-up, rather the concept of the space changes every twenty-five days. Last months theme was Japanese Whisky and this month from 14 June-14 July will be world cup theme. (And yes, of course, you’ll be able to watch it live on their big screens.) They’ll offer what Russians do best, vodka of course. A range of vodka perfect pours and vodka cocktails will be presented, and they’ll also have three mixologists to showcase how they work their magic and how you can take that home with you. You’ll also be able to carbo load for the winter because the food focus will be on pizza and there will also be a Russian version of a poke bowl.

MUST-TRY COCKTAIL A tribute to the red August dust storms around the Whistler Distillery. If you’ve ever spent August in Bloemfontein, you’ll know the sight of winds blowing across dry red fields.

OF THE MONTH Whistler Rum

Get ready to sip your way through 2018... Launch date: Launched in November 2017. Flavours: Whistler has two products on the market at present. ❶ Spice-infused: A true spiced rum that's so new and different in South Africa that the government could not classify it. Infused with secret barrel-aged spices, creating softer, mellow flavour notes of cinnamon, vanilla and citrus. It’s loud and extroverted, almost like December in Plettenberg Bay, only grown up and a little naughtier. ❷ Dark Rum: It’s dark, it’s rich and its golden brown colour should be obvious. With deep flavour notes of dark chocolate, toasted toffee and roasted ground nuts, it’s like a sexy, nocturnal pudding, only manlier and more fun to share with people. ➌ Cool fact: • Whistler is made in the unexpected location on the Free Sate – on a farm along the R70 between Riebeeckstad and Henneman. • The makers of Whistler attended a rum course presented by Luis Ayala at the Moonshine University in Kentucky, USA to learn how to make rum. • In less than a year, Whistler has grown to what is arguably the biggest rum distillery in South Africa. Hangover Cure: We recommend that you have some ginger beer to fix yourself up if you’re having a rough morning. Ginger beer is also a great mix with Whistler rum, so when you’re feeling better, you’ll have the ginger beer ready for your next drink. ➍ Try one: @ R299 per bottle, available via Takealot, Norman Goodfellows and selected Ultra Liquors, Tops at Spar, Checkers and Pick ‘n Pay Liquor outlets.

Being July, the month in which we celebrate the birth of Tata Madiba, we felt it fitting to highlight five of the lesser known local Madiba tributes.

REMEMBERING

MADIBA

Words by Carly Ritz, Images: Pexels, NelsonMandela .org

A ROSE BY ANY ANOTHER NAME The Nelson Mandela rose, the brainchild of household name Keith Kirsten was announced earlier this year as an ode to the former President. The seed was planted back in 2000 when the renowned horticulturist had a discussion with Achmat Dangor from the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The disease-resilient rose is a tall, orange vermilion (red-orange) which grows to more than a metre in good, sunny conditions. The rose was named after the icon as part of the centenary celebrations of his birth. We think it’s fitting that a symbol of love be named for Madiba who once said, “People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite”. MADIBA BRICKED ROAD Of course, there is the well-known Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Pretoria and Nelson Mandela road in Soweto to name two, but a quick road count shows that there are actually over 30 roads named after Nelson Mandela across the country. Here’s the province count; there are 4 in the North West, 6 in Gauteng, 2 in the Northern and 3 in the Western Cape, 5 in Limpopo, 4 in Mpumalanga, 1 in Natal and Free State respectively and 5 in the Eastern Cape.

BRIDGING THE NATION Certainly more famed than the rose and the various Madiba roads but not lauded nearly as much as the various statues that dot the country, the significance of having a bridge named in one’s honour should not be lost on any of us. So it would be remiss in a piece like this not to mention the grandness of the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newtown Johannesburg. The bridge which spans the railway track that separates Newtown and Braamfontein took 18 months to build and was officially opened by the former President himself in 2003. It is the largest cable-stayed bridge in Southern Africa. HOME IS WHERE HE HUNG HIS HAT While it’s a well-known spot for tourists, most South Africans don’t actually know that you can visit the house where Madiba once lived with his family. The house that stands at 8115 Vilakazi Street in Soweto has been restored and memorialized as a tribute to Madiba’s legacy. It’s certainly one of the more significant and personal memorialisation. As he said himself, in his book, The Long Walk to Freedom after being released from prison “That night I returned with Winnie to No. 8115 in Orlando West. It was only then that I knew in my heart I had left prison. For me No. 8115 was the centre point of my world, the place marked with an X in my mental geography.”

A romance with the Cape ROVOS RAIL- The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step onto the Pride of Africa.

Most tourists travel South Africa by car or plane, however, this once in a lifetime option is an alternative like no other. They call themselves the best luxur y train in the world and after experiencing the trip from Pretoria station to Cape Town, it’s easy to understand why.

iews and dreamy dining settings. It’s almost impossible to put this bucket list adventure into words. If you’re not into roughing it and prefer fine dining on a private railway station, then this is just for you. Sophistication and refinement permeate through the locomotive as you embark on the train’s front steps. It’s the definition of old-world charm, a utopian journey, romantic and fanciful, it feels as if you’re stepping into another realm. A world, which Rohan Vos created in 1985. Rohan and his wife Anthea took up a last-minute invitation on a train trip to Magaliesburg which inspired his passion. That same year, Rohan bought a coach or two at an auction. In 1986 he was granted permission to run his first train that was lovingly named after his child, Bianca. The highlight of the trip is that will get to meet the mastermind behind the pride of Africa. Rohan Vos, an ardent advocate, waves you goodbye as you leave Pretoria station and shakes your hand as you arrive in Cape Town. A testament to how committed and impassioned he is to his luxurious project. Rohan also reads every

single feedback letter after each trip and it is this tenacity and fervour that lends itself to the company’s success. Upon entering our Oranje suite, our private butler Alisha welcomed us with open arms, even claiming that there is a complimentary laundry service, 24hour room service and that she would be available at 2 am for an extra glass of bubbles. This pays tribute to the dedicated teams of personnel and their heartfelt service. You are instantly saluted as you enter the train and the ultimate goal for each and every staff member is customer satisfaction. Your glass is never hollow, and your every culinary desire is attainable. Once you disembark on the 1600km three-day journey prepare to be dazzled. You’ll enter your unexpectedly capacious suite and find the most majestic views as you trundle towards the scenic Cape. The deluxe rooms have everything you could ever lust after, however rather encouraging, there isn’t any Wi-Fi available. Initially rather startled by the lack of connectivity, it’s a wonderful consent to stare out into the Cape wine lands with a glass of Thelema or connect with like-minded people whilst revelling in the Karoo’s desert landscape. If you want to be sociable there are open central areas, like the lounge and bar. The train carries a maximum of 72 guests per trip, so it’s never overcrowded. The train is neither brash nor gaudy but rather opulent whilst still retaining comfort, exuding worldliness and good taste. The g-ds certainly delivered with this once in a lifetime adventure. Tips: -Book a Deluxe suite, its spacious at 10 square metres, has a double bed, air con, a shower and toilet. - The price is all inclusive of food and beverages. - There are daily off train excursions which are a must do! The Big Hole in Kwimberley, Diamond Mine Museum and a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein. - Don’t miss high tea, daily at 16h30. - During the day the dress code is smart casual but be sure to pack formal evening wear for the dinners. 5 www.rovos.com t @rovosrailtours f Rovos Rail @rovosrail Hello Joburg • July 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

his location represents biodiversity in South Africa and what started as a farm in the 1700s has turned into a haven. Just a 3-hour drive from Cape Town, it’s a little slice of paradise in the Cape. The smell of limestone fynbos infuses every inch of this nature sanctuary and with over 260 bird species and coastal protected areas, its one of the only few places in the country that offers such diversity. Its Cape Natures flagship nature reserve and should without a doubt be on your “if only” list. The first thing you’ll revel in is the lovely sense of space and the grand, dense foliage of the Millwood trees that lie before you. Its mother nature in all her glory and with views overlooking the dune systems and imposing caves, you’ll realise this is life as it was intended to be. You’ll find life on the edge of the water where it congregates with the land and enthuse in the richness of the sandy beaches, the wildlife roaming freely, dune ecosystems and diverse marine wildlife. It is this that makes this space so special, especially if you visit during whale season.

But if you want something really special we recommend the Melkkamer Manor because of its isolation. This remote, old stone manor house comprises of four magnificently appointed bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. The house is fully equipped for self-catering and has a beautiful spacious kitchen, a cosy lounge and charming dining room and you can have a braai under the cascading trees. You’ll have total privacy as the Opstal area is a 40min drive away or you can just hop in a boat to the restaurant which serves spectacular rustic farm-style cuisine and the finest wines from the Cape wine lands. If you’re into adventure this is the ideal location.

CONFERENCING

for the cool kids

For the kids of today, attending a trade show or family fun day may not seem like the in thing to do, let alone be seen at. But the conferencing and event industry in Joburg has certainly upped its game when it comes to attracting younger crowds. From free WIFI and gin bars to the right celebs, knowing what your audience wants and giving it to them will go a long way in getting the Superga wearing peeps through the door.

#2 Keep things cool If you want the cool kids to come to your event then make it cool. South Africans are aspirational and like to be on the pulse of what’s hip and happening. From the décor to the food to the entertainment, keeping your event on trend or “lit” as the kids are saying these days is pertinent when it

54

Hello Joburg • July 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

comes to talk-ability and buzz. Whether it’s a Martini bar, an extensive gluten-free menu or the hottest new local muso for entertainment, plugging into the signs of the times will go a long way in keeping those feet rushing through your doors. #3 Use state-of-the-art technology If it’s not automated is it even real? With machine learning and augmented reality fast becoming the order of the day, the latest technologies and innovations will up your cool factor tenfold. And one technical hiccup could detail your entire event. From the basics of strong WIFI to bots taking orders and serving lunch to some gamification for event goers – with prizes, of course, technology really can give your event the X factor it’s been missing. #4 Keep it trending As the old adage goes, it’s not what you

know but who you know. A social media strategy for your event is as important as catering for vegetarians (be wary the veggie scorned). Social media plays a big part when it comes to the court of public opinion and deciding what is or isn’t cool. By inviting or partnering with celebrities and influencers with large followings, the chance of your event being promoted to the right people is greater. Also, it’s cool to trend #justsaying. #5 Make it an immersive experience The human attention span seems to be getting shorter from one generation to the next so you need to keep people engaged. Let event goers touch, feel and explore at your event. They want to be a part of the action. Whether its massages on site at a health convention, live cooking challenges for the crowd or gin tasting, get the crowd excited and talking with unforgettable experiences.

Words Carly Ritz

#1 Get the basics right – duh Millennials and Gen Z are notoriously judgmental and unforgiving when it comes to the basics. Your gran may not have complained too much about driving around looking for parking for 10 minutes but a 30 something will take to social media the minute he/she can’t find parking right near the entrance at the venue. From the parking and ablution facilities (dirty toilets could start a riot), make sure that the venue you chose for your event has the hygiene factor sorted.
