HELLO RECOMMENDS...

A tour of Steyn City

S

teyn City is located on the edge of Sandton, connecting Fourways to Lanseria, Broadacres and Midrand, and is what is known as a parkland residence and comprises of some 2000 acres of land. From cluster homes to apartments and freehold homes, there’s something for everyone here, and the high-tech security is second to none. Outdoor ‘trim parks’ and playgrounds abound, as well as a world class Equestrian Centre, and cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways (with hidden delights to be found along the way, amazing and creative artwork) are in place to encourage not only exercise, but also getting around the residence in a way that is kind to the environment. Our bloggers were treated to an amazing morning touring the residence and discovering its nooks and crannies. They then popped into the Deli for a delicious array of treats, followed

by an exclusive golf academy with the resident on-site golf pro, who taught us how to putt and tee-off like professionals. A mouth-watering lunch awaited us at Nineteen(XIX) restaurant, which is located at the Club House. Nineteen(XIX) is beautifully appointed with black and white floor tiles and artistically placed décor, not to mention the amazing variety of deliciously prepared menu items. Impeccable service, and some time spent enjoying the stunning view were the perfect end to the perfect day. There’s always something happening in Greenside! While it may have been a bit… dingy at one point, this neighborhood has flourished into a hip and happening spot – and you’re sure to find something to keep the vibe going… YEAR-ROUND FASHION AT FIVE FISH

www.fivefish.co.za

Designed and made locally, Five Fish’s clothes and cozzies are affordable and have the sweetest prints - you won’t find princesses or superheroes here! The creators of Five Fish even named their store after their five little youngsters… how cute? You’re sure to stand out in their designs because it isn’t mass produced, so don’t worry about having a ‘who wore it best’ moment. Shop 3 Village Green Centre, 127 Greenway Road, Greenside

You’ve recently joined the TKO as their first female host. How did that feel? It came as a surprise … and while I always feel I’m pretty versatile and can adapt easily, I think the proof is in the pudding. It’s a male dominated sport – so I’m hoping the typical stereotype will not exist here.

Try being super-duper organized. Always have a back-up plan and remember you might fail, but at least you tried.

GO GREEN AT GREENSIDE CAFÉ This mouthwatering little spot is purely a plant based whole foods café for all the vegan lovers, or if you’re just after a delicious vegan meal. They have everything your heart could desire, from pasta to vegan burgers, salads and even pizzas! Try their delightful plant-based Jalapeño and Coriander burger, or their Buddha Plate that consists of divine pumpkin, mushroom, tofu, tomato and rosemary stew with brown rice, wilted greens and black sesame seeds. Yum!

Known for the fab cocktails, The Artisan is the place to be on a weekend – or even for after work drinks. Each cocktail is unique, and they change things up often, so you can always go back for something different. Try their Ma Petite Fleur; a vodka and citrus infused cocktail served over a smoked floral garden. Don’t forget about their delectable snacks, like the bacon and cheese croquettes. We’ll see you there on a Friday night?

Flowers or chocolates? And

who does the voice of the infamous Harold from the NetFlorist adverts? Head to www.hellojoburg.co.za for a whole bunch more!

Peony for your thoughts? A heart-to-heart with Ryan Bacher from Netflorist Believe it or not Netflorist, South Africa's largest same day gift and flower delivery service, is in it’s 19th year of operation, and is still going strong – for obvious reasons. We had to have a chat with Ryan Bacher, because Managing Director’s part of his name, and flowers are his end-game! Netflorist is international, so what other countries are you in? NetFlorist delivers to all major countries and cities around the world, but most of our orders are currently for delivery in SA. We also operate in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. Ranges are limited, but we’re looking to expand the business and take the gifting and floral delivery business to bigger heights! What makes Netflorist different? First and foremost, we do same day delivery. We were the first gifting and floral delivery service to be able to say that. We don’t use a third-party delivery company as we have our own delivery vehicles, and there’s a bakery on-site, which means that all our baked goods are delivered fresh! We use local suppliers, and not only do we offer flowers, but we also have gifting, bakery, jewellery and food hampers as well as alcohol. We also control the majority of the floral market. All of this allows us to deliver the best service without delays as much as possible.

16

Why did you choose to add bakery to your list of services? Birthday is our largest ‘day to day’ occasion and cakes are a great birthday gift, so we started there and then went to the other categories. The reason why we chose to have a bakery on-site was so that we could monitor quality control and ensure that every baked item follows strict health and hygiene measures. What’s your most memorable order to date? We delivered flowers on behalf of Bill and Melinda Gates to Madiba when he wasn’t well – a few months before his passing. It was one of those moments where we realised not only the importance of our recipients, but the intention of the sender, which is why we place so much value on every order because you never know where it’s coming from and where it’s going to.

What was the reason behind opening Netflorist? Originally, we planned to build the technology that would help us sustain an online business and then sell that to other retailers. No other retailers were looking to move their business from a brick and mortar store to an online platform, and we basically set a trend by being the first in South Africa to take that step. Other retailers just didn’t see the value, but they certainly are able to now.

SKIN RENEWAL DISCUSSES

Medical vs Over-the-Counter products

good skin care routine is made up of several factors, like a healthy lifestyle, regular skin treatments and a good home routine. Being disciplined is essential as consistency is key but using the right products for your skin type is of equal importance. There’s often a question around whether medical skin care products are really any better than products that can be bought over the counter. What’s the difference between the two? Medical skin care products are sold in establishments where they are prescribed and dispensed by doctors, whereas over the counter products are available in pharmacies, department stores and salons, without being prescribed by a medical doctor.

20

Hello Joburg • March 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

HERE ARE A FEW SUBSTANTIAL DIFFERENCES TO CONSIDER… Expert advice: Over the counter products may be sold with the advice of a sales person, but consumers are often left to their own devices, with the selection process reliant on the packaging or claims made in an advertising campaign. Medical products are prescribed by a doctor who understands your skin type and has a deep knowledge of the products, ensuring the product is right for your skin type. Price: Medical products may be perceived to be more expensive, but price is not necessarily indicative of how good a product is. Over the counter products are often the same prices as medical products. Usage of Active Ingredients: Active ingredients are formulated

to address particular conditions. With over the counter products serving a broader market, the use of active ingredients is very limited in these products. This includes the number of ingredients used, as well as the percentages or dosages. The active ingredients in a medical product are much higher – meaning that the results it has on the skin is much more effective. Penetration into the skin: The active ingredients are formulated to reach the deeper layers of the dermis, making the medical products more penetrable. It is at this level of the skin where collagen is restored, elastin is affected, and new skin cells are produced. For anyone who is serious about

anti-ageing, it’s essential to use products that reach the deeper layer where the skin is actually transformed. To have your skin assessed by a medical doctor to ensure that the products you use works hardest for your skin type, visit Skin Renewal. 5 www.skinrenewal.co.za 1 0861 754 672 U @SkinBodyRenewal  @skinrenewalsa

GET STUCK BETWEEN THE ROCK and a tasty place We love discovering new places and we're super excited to hear The Rock at Design Quarter has opened its doors! So, we hot-footed it over to find out about the latest dining sensation…

L

ocated where the famous Kitchen Bar was, it was time for a revamp and the decision was made to bring a completely new look and feel to this prime site in Fourways. Decadent design and ‘deliciousness’ are just a few of the words that spring to mind after our visit to this new hotspot. Spacious and airy, one can choose an indoor or outdoor dining experience. The kitchen and heart of this restaurant features huge glass windows that allow you to watch your chef ’s in action while they prepare your culinary treats. From the kitchen design to the retractable outdoor awning structure, all the way through to bathroom

design and detail, you can see the thought, care and sheer style that went into the creation of this beautiful restaurant. The much-mentioned sea shell staircase is definitely one of the main focal points of the restaurant. It has been created not only for visual effect, but for practical use too, whereby the staff can quickly gain access to the tables and parties on the top level in Carnelian, the new Tapas restaurant (more on that shortly). We selected a table outdoors to enjoy the warm summer evening. The restaurant was literally pumping and the service impeccable throughout our meal. Two thumbs up! Their burgers are a known delight here, so we opted for the caramelized bacon and brie burger, which came with a generous portion of fries. We were totally delighted with our choice. Others at the table enjoyed the Excalibur, a signature dish which is literally a sword packed with tasty deboned chicken pieces. This can be ordered plain, with a tasty mustard sauce, or peri-peri and comes with your choice of a side salad,

veg, mash or the most delicious sweet potato fries. The menu also offers a wide variety of sushi, pizza, pasta, fish, seafood and salads. The wine list and drinks menu is certainly an impressive one. The cocktails have pretty awesome names and the milkshakes looked absolutely heavenly! Our dessert was a delicious chocolate sphere that melted once the sauce was poured over it, to reveal creamy home-made pistachio ice cream inside. The bite-size Vaflaki mini waffles are also simply to die for. Be sure to add your favorite gelato flavours with these. If you sneak up the staircase, you will find yourself in Carnelian; the sophisticated and relaxing wine, cocktail and tapas bar, lounge and restaurant. A large, well-stocked bar and beautiful crafted glass wine cellar are the focal points here. Carnelian boasts two private dining areas as well, one of which is aptly named ‘The Living Room’; a beautifully appointed, sunken, semi-or fully-private dining area, with one wall completely covered

in plants. It’s like dining on a gorgeous verandah with all the benefits of indoor dining. Both dining areas can be hired out for functions or special occasions and seat 12 to 14 people respectively. Certainly, one of our best discoveries of the year thus far! Design Quarter, corner of William Nicol and Leslie Roads, Fourways. 5 www.therockdiner.co.za 1 011 465 5011 f @theROCK.joburg

chef OF THE MONTH

BOBBYSINGH from Banjaara Bedfordview

Meeting chef Bobby Singh is slightly overwhelming. Overwhelming in the fact that he’s literally a powerhouse of a man; passionate, driven and devoted to what he does. And that’s creating mouth-watering food that will keep you coming back for more. His passion is tangible. Always looking for a new venture, and this one is our favourite – Banjaara - which features the same original and truly authentic North Indian Cuisine which has become so popular in South Africa over the years, and for obvious reasons.

Banjaara was founded by Bobby in 2003, and since then he’s increased his offering to an incredible seven branches across Gauteng. Bobby was helping his mother in the kitchen from as early as he can remember, and by the age of fourteen, was working in restaurant kitchens back in India.

His Sunday buffets are legendary, and customers travel from far and wide to enjoy the home cooked food at their favourite branch. The phone is constantly ringing as take away and delivery orders stream in.

He started his career in Abu Dhabi before taking up a position as a Chef at Sahib in Hillbrow in 1988. He opened his first restaurant in Fordsburg, called Shahmiyana a few years later. He went on to open Shahmiyana branches across Gauteng, and then moved on to his next project, which was opening six Sahib Indian Restaurants, again to much acclaim.

24

Hello Joburg • March 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Bobby works seven days a week, spending time between the branches with the other 30 chefs’ he employs. He also does catering for events and parties with as many as five thousand guests! He believes in employing the right people, and, as he rightly states, it’s his name on the line so the team must work well together to produce the delicious food that Banjaara is well known for. Once again, we’re blown

away by Bobby’s passion for the empire that he has built. Bobby says his favourite dish on the menu is the Chicken Tikka Masala, although we are quite partial to the Chicken Korma ourselves. Not only are the portions plentiful, but the naan is out of this world! We knew there was a reason we keep going back, Hello Joburgers. ure, you could stick to your New Year resolutions but that would be mind-numbing. Instead we tried this brand-new burger joint! This corner eatery is at the top of Jan Smuts, just before Hyde Park Shopping Centre, and now you know where they are, its time to figure out what to order! There’s nothing quite like a juicy burger in summer - especially a fantastic bashed burger, fresh and oozing with taste! “They are moreish and worth cherishing and too precious to be shared with anybody, even a unicorn.” That’s their motto, and we dig it! Before we dig into the reason we’re all here, lets discuss the chicken. It’s triple cooked and they use an open wood fire, which gives it a kick of smoky goodness. Now let’s delve into

our recommended choice - The Num Num Burger; a cool two hundred and thirty-five bucks will get you this gargantuan creation. Get ready to make love to your taste buds. It’s a bun smothered with tomato sauce and mustard, four 100% beef patties completely drizzled with cheese sauce and topped with maple touched bacon, ribs, eggs and a slaw to add the cherry on top. As we always say… go big or go home. They also serve a delicious Wagyu beef burger, served medium well, of course. Add a milkshake for thirtyfive bucks and lunch is sorted. You can also turn up the heat with their Harlem hot sauce. Not to mention the Harlem hotdogs, one hundred percent real pork ribs and vegan toasties. Butter toasted banana peanut butter and maple syrup toastie. Sold!

Firstly its run like a typical take-away business, but what’s really cool is it is run by Parkhurst Residents specializing in pizzas with a Portuguese influence. Drooling yet? This sunny spot is quaint and intimate and is the perfect stopover for a good ol slice a pizza. You simply cannot ignore the white and yellow striped exterior accompanied with a crisp elegant interior. And yes you heard us right if a whole pizza is too much for your belly, and pizza is the only love triangle you want in your life, then just order a heavenly slice to go. uman Rights Day in South Africa is historically linked with 21 March 1960, and the events of Sharpeville. On that day, many people died and fought against the oppression of the government, and now, the day is historically marked in

our calendars as an affirmation by ordinary people rising in unison to proclaim their rights. In keeping with this theme, the team at Hello Joburg set out on the trail to discover some of the best (and most historical) cultural experiences to steep yourself in…

THE MARKET THEATRE

THE EVERARD READ GALLERY Joburg’s oldest art gallery was established in 1913. However, in 1980 they moved from their downtown location to a purposebuilt building in Rosebank. Extending on the 1920’s house, which is the gallery´s administrative centre, is a contemporary structure comprising of sculpture courtyards and four exhibition areas with a series of windows that ensure abundant daylight. They’re known to support a wide variety of local artists from different schools, and the exhibitions change regularly, ensuring that there’s always something new to cast one’s eyes upon. 6 Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg. 1 011 788 4805 5 www.everard-read.co.za

The Market Theatre was known back in the day for challenging the apartheid regime, armed with little more than the conviction that culture can change society. The strength and truth of that conviction was acknowledged in 1995 when the theatre received the American Jujamcyn Award. In providing a voice to the voiceless, The Market Theatre did not forego artistic excellence, but rather made a point of it. Its twenty-one international and over three hundred South African theatre awards bare eloquent testimony to this. 138 Lilian Ngoyi Street, between Miriam Makeba and Margaret Mcingana Streets, Newtown. 1 011 832 1641 5 www.markettheatre.

Many legendary figures have spent time behind its walls, amongst them Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo and more. Today ‘Con Hill’ is visited by thousands every month, from tourists to locals and school children. They offer daily tours of the precinct and conduct regular public events, enabling visitors from every walk of life to interact with their heritage. 11 Kotze Street, Johannesburg. 1 011 381 3100 5 www.constitutionhill.org.za

TURNING THE PAGE Every household has rules that children should obey. For the Owens children, the rules are slightly different… no candles or red shoes, no wearing black or reading books about magic. No standing out in a crowd. You see, the Owens children are different; the eldest with her milky skin, fiery red hair and a knack for chatting to birds; the middle child with her inky black locks and deep penetrating stare that seems to know everything you’re thinking; and finally, the youngest – the only boy, whose rambunctious attitude and musical talent make him more than a handful. Their mother, Susanna worries about her children and has fought hard to keep the family secrets hidden. For their family, love is a curse and each child must abide by one rule above all others… Never ever fall in love. But rules are meant to be broken, right? R285.

Hello Joburg • March 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Our month is fully booked (tee-hee!), thanks to these three fabulous reads we’ve found!

Kate Reddy is counting down to fifty; her babies are now awkward, uncommunicative teenagers, her husband has stopped working to ‘find himself ’ (cue the eyeroll) and seems to have less interest in his family as he does. Never mind the fact her parents are ageing and need carers. Someone has to work, and it’s going to have to be her. The million-dollar question is… how is she going to get a job in her financial management field at her age? When she decides to do what most women are accustomed to doing – lie about her age, she finds that keeping up with her porky pie is tougher than she thought. She can do the job, no problem! Having to remember all the details relating to her little white lie - her personal life and kid’s ages? Not so simple. Then an old love comes back into her life! Allison Pearson’s How Hard Can It Be? will make you laugh, shed a tear and shake your head as you empathize with Kate. It’s a must-read! R285.

You can stand in the rain… or you can dance in it. Annie was perfectly happy standing in the torrential downpour of her life, being sad – until Polly came along; with her vibrant clothes, cheerful face and ‘can-do’ attitude. Urgh, it’s enough to drive Annie mad! Polly manages to coerce an un-excited Annie into helping her with a huge project – to find one hundred days of happiness, and Annie soon faces her own dilemma. Does she let people in and accept that she can be happy… or does she continue down her lonely, well-trodden path of self-pity and resentment? Eva Woods’ How To Be Happy is a breath of fresh air in a stale, colourless world. It will inspire you and break your heart, and you won’t be able to catch your breath until the very last page. R295.

hen South African hotelier, Sol Kerzner was an accountant, he had a vivid imagination. He knew what he wanted and was driven to turn his ideas into reality. In the sixties, he saw the space that is now the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, which then, was merely a sugar cane plantation. What he wanted was a Miami resort-style hotel on the beach - and that’s exactly what he created in this masterpiece! The hotel opened its doors in 1964 and was the very first five star-graded hotel in South Africa.

What makes this hotel so emblematic is its history and longevity. The setting is a honeycomb of rooms, Cabanastyle, overlooking the ocean, with Egyptian cotton linen on the king size beds, and historic pictures of Durban scattered across the walls. It’s no wonder this hotel has made its mark amongst business and leisure markets. All rooms have an ocean view and it’s as sensational as ever with a mixture between turquoise and Alaskan blue waters and pristine beaches. Just a tip: when you book your room, the higher you go, the better the view. Start your morning off with a cycle ride with a view across the Indian Ocean front, before diving into their

abundant breakfast buffet; from sweet honeycomb to the finest eggs Benedict, it’s a high contender in the breakfast kingdom. If you have space, book their renowned afternoon tea experience, and then satisfy your taste buds with a fine dining evening at their signature restaurant, The Sugar Club. The species of wildlife and flora clamour for attention among this home away from home. The reserve has just introduced six female elephants; a conservation milestone as these animals return to their historic range. They are also privileged to be home to the highly endangered cheetah, a special lady named Sibella. Sibella’s life nearly ended at the hands of hunters, but she was rescued and was released into Samara in 2003. She’s reared eighteen cubs and has contributed to

the 2% of wild cheetah population in South Africa - thanks to Samara! The abodes have curved farmhouse rooftops, which are extremely noticeable in this setting. There are two accommodation options; the Manor house, with a 21m infinity pool, descending to a waterhole, or the main Karoo Lodge, where we stayed. It’s a villa-like, farm-style dwelling with doors that open wide out onto a porch from which you can watch the most memorable desert sunsets. Time stands still as you admire nature and her raw beauty. Regal style interiors add a surreal touch with contemporary finishes and earthy tones. The crème de la crème is the Victorian-style bath overlooking the hues of browns, sapphires, azure skies and budding greenery, with smells of wild mint sweeping through, it’s just hunkydory. Although there is excellent Wi-Fi, perhaps you’ll take the less popular choice and opt for a reception free weekend. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Price ranges from around R9100 per room (Karoo suites) for two adults. Petersburg Road Off the R63 to Pearston, Graaff-Reinet. 5 www.samara.co.za 8 reservations@samara.co.za 1 031 262 0324

This young British producer is completely enticed by South Africa. His current project (for which he’s the Associate Producer) is an historical biopic based on a true story. Entitled ‘The Red Sea Diving Resort’, it was written and directed by the creator of ‘Homeland’, Gideon Raff.

Hello Joburg • March 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Do you see South Africa as your home? I certainly see South Africa as a home, along with the UK. I spent my 20’s in Joburg, which were my formative years, so you can say I grew up there. But right now, home is where the projects are. It’s a nomadic existence. Where are you most curious about in the world? All the places I haven’t been, and America. It’s like continuously being on a movie set and makes you think you’re a part of the Truman Show. Weird, but truly fascinating.

What was it like working with Gideon Raff? It’s been a privilege to work with him. His understanding, care and attention to detail is remarkable. He brings humour and lightness of hand to the telling of a serious story, and thanks to his enthusiasm and sheer charisma, we’ve brought together a great cast ensemble. Your most memorable career moment? Geoffrey Rush eating a kebab on my sofa. And doing a couple of scenes with Chris Evans, Haley Bennett and Greg Kinnear. It was probably the most nerve-racking

experience I’ve ever had, but in turn, the most rewarding. What’s at the top of your bucket list? I’m not really a fan of making a list of things to do before I die. It reminds me of the Western tourism industry and takes away from the spontaneity of it all. And, what happens if I don’t tick them all off?! Describe ‘The Red Sea Diving Resort’ in three words… A must see! U @thelovecock
