Editor's Note Struggling to come to terms with the fact it’s November? Look at it this way…

R

emember, remember, it’s now called Movember and moustaches are ready to grow. But it’s not all about skipping a shave, it’s about raising awareness, or didn’t you know?

November is the month dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health. According to the Men’s Foundation of South Africa, men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years while testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50 years. The Movember campaign is dedicated to helping our men live longer. While many of the lads grow out their facial hair to show support, there’s actually a few ways you can help raise awareness, and funds for medical research. You can take the Move Challenge and get physically active – take a run, learn a new sport, beat your personal best and call on friends and family to join. You can create a Movember event, have your friend’s or work colleague’s band together and have fun – sell raffle tickets, have an in-office competition, sell boerie rolls and donate the money towards testicular cancer research. Or simply head over to za.movember.com and donate money yourself.

DIGITAL CONTRIBUTOR Nisha Padayachee

In light of Movember, we’ve tried to make the lads feel special in this issue. We’ve found a number of brew-tastic beer activities for the men in your life, as well as some incredibly stylish fashion items to keep them cool during this sizzling summer. We’ve even sussed out the best ways that dads can hang out with their teenage daughters – just refrain from cracking any ‘dad jokes’ in public. The Hello Joburg team loves to take advantage of our glorious African summer and head outdoors! We’ve sussed out five of the best outdoor activities to keep your body beach-ready, and covered the many benefits of working out in the sunshine. Instead of forking out a fortune for gym, did you know that you could head to one of Jozi’s many outdoor gyms, which are usually found in child friendly spots like parks? And they’re free? We’re kind of in love with this initative, so check it out! We’ve also fallen in love with the Keyes Art Mile Precinct in Rosebank. We’re always happy to see art inspired spots popping up all over the city. This stretch is the hottest new place to wine, dine, shop and explore and you’ll kick yourself if you don’t get over there soon. We’re not ashamed to admit that Milk Bar has become our go to spot for brunch – they serve a mean cuppa joe and the toasted sarmies are to die for! With the festive season coming up, it’s the perfect time to explore Jozi. Do your shopping at a mall you wouldn’t usually venture to, make a day of it, and revel in everything our glorious city has to offer. You certainly won’t regret it.

Almost too good to share HOT spots We can’t keep a secret this tasty…

here’s a reason why Marthinus Ferreira is consistently voted one of the best chefs in South Africa his layering of complex flavours is nothing short of artistry. He’s also good at reading a trend, so when the seasons change and food moods call for something lighter, he’s right on point.

little while ago, Melville fell off the foodie radar. However, we’re happy to say it’s regained its status as one of Jozi’s gourmet centres making it the ideal home for Chef James Diack’s latest venture, The Federal.

talented Chef de Cuisine, Jess McKinnon. The result is nothing short of magic. The kind of magic that makes you give an involuntary ‘mmm’ with each and every mouthful. The idea behind The Grazing Room’s dishes is that they are made to share tapas style, but we really wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to keep them all to yourself. Our favourites? You’ve got to try the bao-style bun, lightly dusted with tomato powder and bursting with a rich, flavoursome oxtail ragu. The smoked gnocchi is also a revelation. Each puffy pillow perfectly complemented by a cheese sauce. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, try

the tom yum calamari, with a perfect balance of chilli and peanut. Marthinus’ favourite dessert is the eton mess. It’s certainly interesting, with orange blossom water and meringue creating a fresh mix of tastes and textures – but who can ever resist churros? Needless to say, you’d better go hungry. Or go again and again… we don’t judge. In fact, you’ll probably see us there! By the looks of things, The Federal is going to follow suit. James describes the newest family member as his take on an American greasy spoon, dishing up stateside classics like next-level hot dogs and good ol’ crispy fried chicken, as well as brisket with buttermilk biscuits. We tried the traditional Reuben sandwich and were blown away by the punchy, bold flavours. Think smoked beef, Swiss cheese and pickles! Dessert was a difficult choice. The S’mores pie seemed the obvious pudding to go for – is there a chance a dense chocolate filling topped with marshmallow brulee is going to be anything less than amazing? In the end we went with pumpkin pie and, with its crisp shortbread base and spiced topping, we were so glad we did. The Federal is definitely one of the best spots in Joburg to get your taste of the trend for Deep South flavours. H Corner of 7th and 2nd Street, Melville 3 010 900 4876 0 thefederal@coobs.co.za

Operation Hunger recently celebrated its 35th anniversary of helping those in need

D

id you know that 24 million South Africans live below the poverty line of R10 a day and that hunger kills more people than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined? Operation Hunger strives to educate people and help feed the hungry through community initiatives. The non-profit organisation was started by Dr. Selma Browde and Dr. Nthato Motlana in 1980, when they realised that malnutrition was a horrific, growing problem in South Africa. Operation Hunger’s main goal is to help communities help themselves by carrying out a number of sustainable projects that are based on community needs. These projects include harvesting water by using Hippo Roller water tanks, and the creation of small, manageable garden plots within communities, as well as vegetable, chicken and egg laying production, the setting up of soup kitchens and training in health and life management skills.

Words Victoria Taylor

The organization is dedicated to the development of skills with which people and communities can take control of their own livelihoods. The communities in which Operation Hunger (OH) operates are generally situated in deeply rural areas or informal settlements that have little or no basic services, few resources and minimal health care systems. In these areas, Operation Hunger help fight malnutrition through education and skills development. Volunteers and dedicated works train stakeholders and initiate sustainable projects that address the root of the malnutrition problem – which is poverty. A charity dinner was hosted at the SA National Museum of Military History in Saxonwold, in order to celebrate Operation Hungers 35thanniversary. Key Note speaker and Honorary President, Mervyn E. King informed invited guests about inclusive capitalism, how Operation Hunger works and the monumental difference the program and its volunteers has made within communities across the country. H 5 www.operationhunger.org

Travel writer and photographer. Sometimes blonde, sometimes brunette. Kate will eat anything once, and will swap water for champagne whenever she’s given the chance. T

How can you help?

You may feel that your input is just a drop in the ocean, but if your community bands together, you can make a big difference. Operation Hunger accepts monetary donations, donations in kind (food, water and educational equipment) as well as donations of time. Host an OH event – Take the lead and host an event or activity at your home or office to raise funds for Operation Hunger. We’re talking about raffles, bake sales and community walks. Operation Hunger has a fundraising team that will happily assist or participate. Volunteer – Time is a valuable thing, so why not offer yours as a volunteer or a supporter? You can help out with administrative, marketing and fundraising work or venture into the field and deliver food parcels to those in need. Take the challenge – We mentioned earlier that many fellow South Africans live below the poverty line – a measly R10 a day. Would you be able to do the same? Encourage your office to join the challenge one day a month and see what food items they come up with. Then collect R10 from everyone involved and donate it.

@Kate_Els 5 www.IndiKate.net

What accomplishment are you most proud of? I manage to balance an incredibly full schedule, but still know how to be with the one I’m with and not feel the need to check my phone. How long have you been blogging for and where do you find inspiration? It’s been over six years now, on three different blogs. IndiKate.net started because I wanted to create a beautiful online diary to house my adventures and my photos. My inspiration comes from my own improvement over the years and the positive comments I get about the tireless work I put in. Tell us about your ideal reader A strong independent female, who has a lust for life and never stops being curious. Somebody who always eats the bread on the table and firmly believes she can survive on champagne rather than water. If you could eat only 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be and where would they be from? Pad thai from Thailand - I firmly believe this is a balanced meal. The tapas from The National in Parktown North, and cheese and crackers. I’m not fussy where those are from… ever. Tell us the three best things about you. 1) I pack light when I travel, and pack a suitcase like a Tetris game. 2) It's easy for me to fit into any situation because I'm so laid back. 3) I'm honest in the kindest way or the harshest, depending on the situation. They’ve just opened their sixth store since launching in South Africa in 2015 and this treasure box of toys can be found at The Zone @ Rosebank. “Our initial target was to open two stores per year but by the end of 2016, we will have opened our seventh store within 14 months of trading. We have surpassed our own expectations as well as the UK Head Office – clearly reflecting the strength and acceptance of the brand into the South African retail market,” said Mr. Philip Paphitis, CEO of Hamleys South Africa.

tech Webafrica’s Fibre Style

Join the digital age and sign up for fibre!

I

f you are an internet-ist like us, you’ll agree that fast internet is golden, and slow internet puts us closer to a crazy rampage. The good news is that with fibre rolling out across the country, buffering YouTube videos and slow emails will soon be a thing of the past!

For the noobs out there, fibre isn’t just the roughage in your morning cereal - this type of fibre is all about making connectivity faster. Fibre uses light to transmit data, and we all know how fast light goes.

Words Brad Daniels

“Think of a fibre optic cable as a hosepipe which runs directly into your house, unlike your regular copper cables through which ADSL runs, it is hollow. But it’s not empty - imagine shining a torch through this ‘hosepipe’. In essence, fibre optic cables contain hair-thin strands of flexible glass that transmit light. These cables literally transfer data with the speed of light!” explained Webafrica sales director, Myron Salant.

16

Webafrica is partnering with loads of fibre providers around the country to secure a wide reach that will have us all on super-fast lines in no time, and they already cover 250000 homes! You can check out the Webafrica Fibre Hello Joburg • November 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

map to find out if your neighbourhood has been fibered up yet. Just remember, fibre is pretty new to South Africa so it could take a little time for it to reach your neighbourhood. “Currently internet over fibre is only available in certain towns and suburbs where the cables have physically been laid,” explained Myron. How about the installation process? It’s tough to determine how long it would take a provider to lay the cables, but once the cables are in place, it typically takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the fibre provider to run the cable to your house. Then a Webafrica technician will be dispatched to your home with your router to set it all up. “We feel that this provides a unique, one-on-one service and gives our customers the opportunity to ask any questions, and get answers on the spot at time of installation.” says Myron. The process is manned by the dedicated in-house team that manages all orders, ensuring that everything happens as fast as possible. The good news is fibre is being received tremendously well. “Fibre connectivity can be seen as a more reliable replacement for legacy ADSL technology. Faster speeds enable people to stream digital content smoothly, improve the value of their homes and enjoy an overall improved internet experience,” Myron added.

Fibre is in demand throughout the country - everyone wants to be part of the internet lifestyle and the reason is fairly obvious… it’s awesome! So, are you ready for Netflix? Showmax? Basically, Webafrica and fibre is the answer! The Webafrica head office is based in Cape Town but they recently installed themselves in the economic hub of Johannesburg, allowing their teams to react fibre-fast to any situation. Webafrica plan on broadening their Joburg operations by expanding, and creating job opportunities to make sure they keep their focus at the centre of their culture and provide the best customer experience. You can get hold of them via phone, email, online and even by dropping into the office. Being a one-stop web shop, Webafrica supplies its customers with world class internet, web design, security, web hosting and more. So it makes sense to put your apples in their basket. After all, it’s much easier to checkout at one store than many. H Corner Mutual & Rivonia Boulevard, Rivonia 5 www.webafrica.co.za 0 support@webafrica.com 3 086 000 9500 T @webafrica @webafrica_sa

Italian Food Bar

W

A little slice of Italy right in the middle of Sandton City

alking into Nonna's Italian Food Bar is a completely new and internationally chic experience. The dĂŠcor is fresh and modern, with Italian subtleties all over the store. Fresh green scents permeate the space with live basil pots on each table for customers to pick to add to their food as they like. Nonna's is the first of its kind in Sandton, and will definitely be one of our regular stops from now on.

They've adopted the canteen system, so no money changes hands within the restaurant. Instead, the use of a store card tallies up all food selected at the various pastsa, pizza, panino, salad, and dessert stations, and then gives you the total at the till on the way out, where payment is made. But calling this Eurochic food bar a canteen, would be doing it a great disservice. Restaurant manager, Idan, refers to the experience as "food theatre". There is a glass window on the right of the restaurant where pasta is prepared fresh every day using only the finest Italian ingredients, right in front of the customer. The whole experience really does feel bespoke, as if it's tailored specifically for you and every dish is just waiting for your picking.

18

The pasta is just incredible, delicate and organic, made with stone-ground flour, proven to cause 60% less bloating than regular flour. All dishes are ready in 8 minutes or less from the time you order them, and there is a take-home section where a variety of lasagnas, canneloni and other popular dishes are waiting to be taken home and devoured for dinner. We began our culinary experience with a portion of the Zucchini Fritti, made only with Hello Joburg • November 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

flour - no egg or oil - proving to be lighter and crispier and just perfetto! For mains we ordered the Fusilli di Mare (seafood pasta). We were enticed by the imperfect, organic fusilli pieces and they did not disappoint! It's incredible what a difference it makes when the pasta is made fresh. The pizza was just as delicious, with nothing to fault. All meals, including salads and panini, can be customised with build-your-own (BYO) options, and the pizza is available whole or by the slice. Dessert is just in a whole other league. They have imported flatbed circular ice cream machines to create their unique ice cream roll sensations. Choose your toppings, which are chopped up and mixed into their signature vanilla base, and then rolled out flat to freeze over the surface, only to then be scraped up into a creamy roll of goodness. Served either in a cup or one of their sugar cones, also made in-house. Mamma mia! Finish off or pair your Italian feast with a blend of their in-house coffee, or have a glass of wine or even a beer - did we mention they are fully liquor licensed? Some more good news is that Nonna's Italian Food Bar will also be serving breakfast soon, so pop in for an early meal to kickstart your day in an Italian way. Even better news is that the price is just right! Everything in store is completely reasonably priced. Even the imported Italian sodas. Nonna's Italian Food Bar is fast becoming Sandton's favourite trattoria, so what are you waiting for? H P.S. David Higgs His name is on everyone’s lips… and it’s not hard to see why.

From his first fish prepared on an open fire, David proudly presents his theatre of experience – Marble. The name, a combination of the exquisite interiors paired with the marbling process of meat. At Marble, the beauty lies in foods that we recognise, uniquely prepared on a live fire. David believes that ambience is everything, and sophisticated comfort is what you can

expect from this exquisite establishment, with a team of passionate personalities, from the barmen to the baristas. The greatest reward David reaps from this passion project is having a restaurant full of satisfied patrons, having sampled the honesty and warmth of his offering. A truly inspired individual, David believes in the power of mentorship for different stages of one’s life. He’s learnt everything he knows about cooking from his mentor Bill Stafford, mastered marketing from mentor, Jacques Engelbrecht and business acumen from business partner – Gary Kyriacou. When asked about his guilty pleasure, David would pay almost anything for Toro - traditional fatty tuna belly - prepared by a recognised Japanese chef; and if he could have a meal personally prepared by one of

his icons, it would have to be the father of Molecular Gastronomy – Ferran Adria. Locally, when he isn’t culinary crafting over an open fire at Marble, he enjoys the farm to table philosophy of Coobs, and the great flavours and good food at Urbanology in the City of Gold. Wine down at Ten Bompas

The Winehouse, situated inside the Ten Bompas Hotel, boasts an intimate setting. The design is simple yet tasteful, and enjoying your three-course wine pairing on a comfy corner couch is what we love. The setting is cozy and there’s a refreshing buzz in the air once the restaurant fills up. Our favorite part of the evening was definitely the cuisine. Food glorious food, prepared by

executive chef Johannes De Bruijn. Having spent two years at Cube Tasting Kitchen under Dario De Angeli, Johannes is a skilled and proficient chef. He’s the captain, and he possesses an intense passion for cooking. The three-course meals are nothing short of exceptional, using interesting, unique ingredients that extend your imagination. The menu experiments with bold flavors and truly is a gastronomic experience. Winehouse has a modern, experimental approach to food. The quail waldorf with apple, celery and walnut was packed with smacks of flavor. This starter dish paired perfectly with Kaapzicht Kliprug Chenin Blanc. We loved the ‘onsen tamago’, a delicate velvety soft egg layered on top of artichoke,

truffle, silken tofu and a bed of noodles, paired with a Villera Brut Natural. Delish! Now you’ve read our review, you’ll understand why we’ll be back again and again. Double thumbs up from us! H 10 Bompas Road, Dunkeld West 5 www.tenbompas-restaurant.co.za 3 011 325 2442

Chef Deena Naidoo

The owner and head chef at Aarya in Montecasino

I

f you recognise the name Deena Naidoo, it’s because he was the first person to win MasterChef SA in 2012. Since then, it’s been nothing but up for this talented chef, who originally hails from Chatsworth in Durban.

Words Victoria Taylor

Although he studied electronic engineering, Deena has been cooking since he was 7 years old. “My passion for food began when I was a child. My greatest inspiration to begin cooking came from observing the care and love my late mom took when she prepared her dishes.” However, he admits that he never saw himself becoming a chef when he was older. “It’s amazing how life changes,” he laughs.

22

Aarya is a restaurant that represents a real life culinary journey that resulted in the realisation of my personal dream. The name Aarya is derived from Sanskrit and inspired by Deena’s daughter. The restaurant is a warm, welcoming spot for families and friends who enjoy good food. “I wanted the average South African to be able to relate to and appreciate the meals on the menu. We as South Africans have our very own cultural and culinary identity, I have come a long way to present and celebrate this, our uniqueness at Aarya,” Deena says.

The menu is peppered with everything you could hope for… Baked black mushrooms with blueberry and melted Dalewood chilli brie for starters and oak smoked salmon So, if he didn’t want to become a chef, why trout salad napped with honey and mustard did he enter MasterChef SA? Deena states dressing. We’re talking about pizzas and that his passion for food drove him to try his pastas galore, burgers and seafood dishes that luck in the competition. “I realised that this will make your mouth water. There’s even a was the ideal platform for me to acknowledge biltong spice crusted beef fillet served with my lifelong passion and immense love for food, chakalaka and a sauce of your choice. And of and to show South Africa just what I had to course, there’s good old Indian curry. Hello offer as an amateur cook.” Joburgers, you simply have to try they butter chicken – it’s Deena’s award-winning recipe We’re lucky he did too, because he won! And with his victory came the exquisite restaurant, for delish mild chicken curry. Aarya is all about food that South African’s love, served in Aarya, in the SunSquare in Montecasino. the way we love it – hearty and flavourful. This spot is where spice and culture meet. “I am and will always be proud of my roots and When he’s not making mouths water, Deena spends most of his time interacting with cultural heritage,” explained Deena. guests and relieving fond memories of his time in the MasterChef kitchen. “Winning the MasterChef title has not changed me as a person I still remain true to my role as a husband to my wife and a father to my children. That takes priority against anything else in my life.” This family man can often be found in and around the Montecasino complex, as he describes it as his ‘home away from home’ or chowing down on some of his favourite cuisine – Thai! He admits that he would love to open up a restaurant in his hometown, and that’s something he is striving to accomplish in the near future. “My message to all and more importantly what I have learnt on this journey is a simple one - You must learn to believe that you can achieve anything if you trust and have faith in yourself. You will find your inner strength when you are experiencing your weakest and darkest moment.” H Corner William Nicol and Witkoppen Road, Montecasino 3 011 557 7007 0 aarya@tsogosun.com

W

ith summer in full swing, why would you want to spend the time out of the office indoors? Don’t get us wrong, there are practical benefits to training indoors, but exercising outside can have many advantages – and not just the scenery! Varying your outdoor exercise not only means you’re more likely to work your body in new and different ways, but it will help alleviate stress and strains that you didn’t even know you had.

surfaces and gradients exercise your body in different ways.

Mental exercise - Outdoor exercise provides mental stimulation that indoor workouts simply can’t match. It doesn’t matter if you’re working out at home or at your local gym, you’ll be surrounded by the same four walls. Training outside means you have changing scenery that excites and stimulates your brain, giving your mind a workout as well as your body!

Hydrate - Don’t forget to drink lots of water! One of the benefits of a gym is that there is a tap around every corner, so outside, you’ll need a water bottle or two.

The benefits:

Something different - You’ll find outdoor training uses muscles you never thought you had. Running outdoors is more demanding physically than a treadmill, even on an incline… and it’s way more fun.

Vitamin D - We all know this has some great benefits. It strengthens your immune system, makes bones stronger and also improves your mood. Exposure to sunlight is a common treatment for depression and other mood

The terrain - Varied terrain and conditions that you get from the outdoors can’t be simulated in the gym. You hit hills and different surfaces, like concrete, grass, sand and – of course – earth and mud! All these

Everyone’s favourite spa gets a revamp

L

adies and gentleman, we’re thrilled to tell you about the revamped and refurbished Saxon spa. The Saxon Hotel is a much-loved brand and now there’s another reason to fall in love with it. There is no better alternative for an escape, and no better way to impress. The Saxon spa offers Joburgers plenty of opportunities to spoil that special someone. The new Saxon spa approaches world-class status with modern, simplistic architecture and a circular luxurious design. It’s a space for people who have outgrown the usual Jozi retreats, and are after a stylish upper class space, which exudes comfort and encompasses excellence.

chandeliers, mother of pearl painted walls and ultra-chic finishing’s, it really is one of a kind. There’s a plush private manicure studio and pedicure room. The spa has eleven treatments rooms, a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi pool and a flotation pool, as well as a guest interaction room with a juice bar. The juice bar will serve five unique types of juices and you can make your own. Hold onto your hats because we’ve left the best for last. The new spa has its very own traditional Turkish Hammam.

We anticipated being pleasantly amazed, but the Shangri-La that is the Saxon Spa won us over! It’s main focus is on the sensory experience, and although we can only give our feedback as we attended the soft launch, we are beguiled by what we saw.

This iconic location - exclusive and private, will take your breath away, especially our cherry on top - the Eden treatment room. ello Joburgers, we’re here to guarantee you’re always on point for Mani Monday. When we discovered a new Polish Nail Spa at 44 Stanley, we just had to share the news!

The silly season is fast approaching, so we understand that many of you are on a tight budget. Which gives us more reason to share with you why we love Polish. It’s completely affordable! An express Manicure is thirty minutes at only R185 and an express Pedicure - also just thirty minutes - is R255.00! Polish nail spa ensures your nails are always on fleek - they’ll look slicker, healthier and more chic than ever before. Your tips and toes will be trimmed, primed and ready for summer. Whether its pastels, mellow yellow, floral inspired or bright hues, Polish have you covered. Since picking your nail shade these days is trickier than ever before, the staff will happily assist you, ensuring you’ll leave feeling beautiful. Be wise ladies, prioritise! Would you rather grab a lunch out once a week and satisfy yourself for an hour, or get your fingertips

pampered, which lasts a whole week or two with a gel application? It really is a no brainer, hence why Manis are getting some serious attention once again this season. Art at its heart

Take a stroll through the Keyes Art Mile Precinct

What used to be an adorable little avenue has turned into Jozi’s own gem. A true testament to the inspiring and ever rising Joburg philosophy and a major confluence of the diverse Joburg culture. In August we saw the triumph of this gargantuan launch, and it has been a mounting success ever since. We couldn’t wait to shop (okay maybe window shop), wine, dine and indulge with Jozi’s elite. Why we love it: It showcases local and international art as well as design. It is an Mesh Club

authentic reflection of South Africa and an emblem of pride and heritage. Here are our top picks within the Trumpet building… EAT at Marble restaurant Let’s begin with the crème de la crème - the exclusive and mesmerising new two hundredseater restaurant by David Higgs. In a league of its own, the space showcasing the beautiful city lights is reason enough to visit, with a spectacular bar and a view that will melt hearts. It left us speechless. The restaurant is purely dedicated to precision and passion, with an open flame dining style. All round applause! 5 www.marble.restaurant WINE at Mesh Club The common ground for uncommon people, this bar is the coolest hangout in town. Think of it as a members club that is also a gallery, and by the way, the art collection is delicious in itself. Pierneef lies majestically on the wall, guarding you whilst you order your first cocktail. Using beautiful classic ingredients, the cocktails are hand-crafted perfection, reviving once defunct South African staples to create masterpieces. There’s even a private conference room/dining area for private functions. We recommend you visit them during sunset. Pure magic! 5 www.meshclub.co.za DRINK at Milk bar Is there anything better than basking outdoors in the summertime, on the pavement to be precise? Milk Bar allows for just that! This

Plus the ‘envy of all your friends’ Brazzaville tote bag range - which is available in a variety of juicy colours. The products are simply stunning and of course, collectable. Where lions are your neighbours t was just after sunrise and we were staring into the natal bushveld. Earlier that morning, we had heard the calls of laughing hyenas and the tunes of the lilac breasted roller and suddenly, we left the city woes behind.

The bush is an integral part of any African’s existence and Thanda is the cherry on top - just six hours outside of Joburg. Stay: Thanda Tented camp Discover true African wilderness inside this glamping experience Hello Joburgers. This iconic location and renowned reserve allow for the ideal campsite. Nestled in private positions overlooking Mother Nature lays fourteen tented camps, each with a private sun deck and ensuite canvas bathroom. The Thanda Tented camps are the very definition of luxury. We highly recommend you take an outside shower amongst the wild animals; it’s an absolute treat. With their contemporary eye-catching designs and old world colonial style décor engaging in a basic nuance of color, they bring the bush to life. Bringing extra beauty and preciousness into the environment and allowing creativity to emerge in a reserved way. Remember there is no electricity, which means no TV and electronics, which also gives way for escapism and absolute pleasure. Eat: Just a stones throw away from your tent is the Hemingway-style lounge and dining area (and electricity too for those technology addicts) We dined inside the boma and had a feast of epic proportions. What could be more enticing than

succulent chops, spicy roasted chicken, samp, beans and of course pap and sauce. The Zulu tribe showered us with a traditional dance, captivating and entrancing and alongside the passionate bush fire. Stay: Thanda Luxury Villa The easiest way to understand the concept of luxury is to stay in one of these nine villas. The sheer volume will take your breath away. Down a wooden path you’ll stumble across your very own private villa, with a rounded stoned pool and best of all, your very own outdoor reading cradle with a view that will make your heart skip a beat. The rooms are all about celebrating African design and colour, which complements the look and feel of the luxurious environment. The rooms are surreal with gargantuan master bedrooms, outdoor showers, wooden decks and a spacious lounge; rooms fit for royalty. Eat: Like clockwork the lodge and its staff, work like a well-oiled machine, working determinedly and tirelessly. You can choose to enjoy dinner in your very own private boma or dine in the beautiful restaurant. A stunning three course meal is served, sweet and floral Kaapzicht wine flowing and the who-o-o of owls hooting in the background. The Rate includes: All drinks and meals as well as snacks and two game drives per day. Thanda boasts the Big Five and so much more, the game viewing is reason enough to visit. New look for Weylandts

Something wicked (cool) this way comes!

A

fter months of preparation, Weylandts have finally unveiled the new look to their stores. And they will not disappoint, no matter how many years you’ve been a fan of the brand. When you browse through their in-store greenhouse and kitchen sections, you’ll probably stop dead to stare in wonder at the breath-taking array of new furniture and home ware. The transformation is truly evident in every store and we’re loving it! What can you expect? A bit of a mood There is a darker, moodier colour palette to the stores. It’s incredibly seductive and sultry, yet infuses a sense of calm. The décor consists of black metal and ebony wood themes while focusing on reclaimed wood and contrasting natural materials. It complements the latest locally made and internationally sourced merchandise available in-store. We love the moody palette – it’s the perfect colour pairing for rustic, natural décor. In

the kitchen, we’d pair this with earth tone kitchen accessories, bamboo utensils and stone cookware. Or you could go in the opposite direction and add pops of bold, bright colour. Nothing beats a bit of retro! Before you start to stress, the iconic ranges is till around – and always will be. The other ranges have been refined and reimagined to make you stop in your tracks. “Our reimagined products showcase refined design with the finest natural materials, while still remaining true to our unique DNA,” explained Chris Weylandt. One hot kitchen The most significant addition to the stores? It’s got to be the bold new kitchen. Picture a raw steel façade that provides a striking backdrop for ranges of cookware from northern Europe and kitchen knives from Germany and Japan. It also houses a number of crockery ranges imported from Portugal as well as traditional brush ware and kitchenware sourced from Germany. Can we just have this whole section fitted into our house, please? All about the outdoors Our favourite part? The outdoors are in! Weylandts have a fabulous new in-store greenhouse and we’re sure you’ll agree that when it comes to interior décor, green never goes out of style. You’ll find new furniture

ranges, more plants and succulents and totally stylish gardening tools and accessories – absolutely everything you need to ensure 2016 is your most stylish summer yet. Did we mention there are gorgeous pots to choose from? There are even silver hanging pots – the perfect addition to any porch. If you’ve got green fingers, you’ll feel right at home here. Don’t take our word for it, visit your nearest store and experience the Weylandts transformation first hand. You will not be disappointed. The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country.

Words Bianca Spinner

Describe your new album, ‘Never Mind’ in three words Instinctive, personal and unapologetic The single has been described as a foundation of thick bass underneath your powerful vocals. What do you think makes this an incredible record? The beauty in simplicity. Usually I’m relentless with wanting to ‘polish’ every component of the song, but I was feeling musically rebellious and unbridled.
