ne of the most frustrating comments I consistently hear from people is, “Cape Town has better restaurants than Joburg”. Now please understand that my intention is not to deliberately run down our yuppie neighbours in the south. As a true Joburger and publisher of one of the city’s leading dining and lifestyle magazines, I feel that I have a duty to expose this diverse, delicious and sometimes decadent culinary destination that is Jozi. Let’s start with our cover feature this month, The Bull Run in Sandton. This truly authentic South African steakhouse has been in operation since the turn of the century and trust me when I say, there is no comparison to their mouth-watering beef, with a selection of cuts and sizes to suit any discerning customer. Check out the cover spread on pages 10 and 11 to hear more about their extensive multi-million rand renovation. Joburg is so on trend that even Mr Reuben Riffel, a true Cape Tonian has decided to open a restaurant in the City of Gold. Read our

September is the start of spring and what better way to burn off that little winter belly than by signing up for a trail run. They don’t call Joburg the largest man-made jungle for nothing and rightfully so as we have some of most scenic city trails in the country. Check out page 21 for a list of upcoming running and hiking events in September. We’ve specifically included a variety of distances to cater for all fitness levels, so there’s no excuse! If you’re an animal lover like me, then you’ll be very excited to know that SpinnerCom Media has recently added a new magazine title to its stable. Equestrian Life magazine was launched in July this year with an extremely positive welcome from the industry. Check out our Equestrian Life feature on page 45 through 48 and keep an eye on your local tack shop for the next issue, which will be published in October 2018. As a fine Italian Nonna once said, “first we eat and then we do everything else”. Whatever you do in the city this month, make sure you go out and try one of the many incredible eateries first!

Bon appétit!

Heard on THE STREETS OF JOZI! Jozi-isms – we love our local language!

South Africans have a language of their own. We converse about robots and okes and the kasi. So, because it's Heritage Month and we’re all about braais and boerewors, HJ hooked up with some of our readers for an update on all the unique things that we South Africans say and what it all means. Some we’ve heard, some we hadn’t and some we still don’t quite get. Ag, ja, well, no, fine hey! Why so Spicy?

A phrase used to describe someone getting a little more passionate, dramatic or heated in a conversation than usual, being asked why you are so spicy is definitely not a pick-up line as we first thought. “It’s like you’ve added more curry to the bunny chow today or something,” one reader told us. “It doesn’t mean you are a b*itch either but don’t be surprised when people keep their distance” – or offer you a milkshake to calm the burn.

Words Carly Ritz Iimages Pexels

No tea no shade

A slang expression meaning “no offence meant but ….” was popularized by drag queen Jasmine Masters of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame (according to some of our slaying readers) and seems to be catching on all over the place. The reference to tea ain’t with the Queen though and in this case insinuates truth. So basically, the phrase is saying I don’t really care if this offends you or not but it’s the truth guuurl!

Same WhatsApp group

Very popular in the halls of universities at

the moment, we learned that this line refers to people with the same interests or people part of a similar group. So, if someone says “you’re in their WhatsApp group” take it as a nod of inclusion. If you didn’t quite make the group – eish sorry! Heads up though that it’s not necessarily a literal phrase so don’t be sitting at your phone all night waiting for a warm welcome to a new group. Alternatively, start your own.

Ag Shame!

What would a list of Jozi-isms be without an ag shame! Originally meant to indicate shame or pity, this one has become a term of endearment for just about anything, whether it’s a nerdy kid, a B-grade celeb losing their sh*t all over social media or a cute puppy – an ag shame says it all.

KES or St Stithians?

Asking someone what school they attended is not as straightforward as you may think and the person asking it may not be playing six degrees of separation like you originally

thought? We have it on good authority – from a local comedian nogal, that when asked if you are from KES or St Stithians, it’s not as much about your popularity with the girls as it is an indication that you’ve done pretty well for yourself in your chosen field.

Sho’t Left

An almost ancient phrase is some circles by now, sho’t left for those hearing it for the first time is derived from everyday South African ‘taxi lingo’. A commuter wanting a ride to a destination close by will say ‘sho’t left, driver,’ meaning ‘I want to get off just around the corner.’ Then the people at SA Tourism got smart and used the phrase for a cool campaign to promote local travel and now even non-taxi commuting peeps got wind of it – well mostly. What have you heard on the streets of Jozi recently? Tweet us or comment on our FB page to be part of the next instalment. lowing onto the iconic new development of The Marc and across from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, The Bull Run itself has become a symbol of Sandton and truly synonymous with everything it has to offer. Ever changing and evolving this establishment embodies the heart of the financial district while remaining relevant to both local and international needs. The Bull Run has officially reopened after getting a full refurbishment after many years of service, to continue to offer its loyal customers a unique experience for many more years to come. The full revamp, worth R20 million, was intended to increase capacity and create an international feel that would attract new patrons and provide a change of scenery for loyal regulars. With over 18 years of trading, the restaurant has only undergone minor, essential changes to maintain the property, to create a more spacious entrance area to the kitchen, and to create an additional entrance within the adjacent Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton.

“Last year we decided, that with a trendy new development springing up next door, the time had come for a complete refurbishment,” explains Jörg Zwinscher, GM of the hotel. “We felt that it was time for a new look and feel. The new development, The Marc, will link directly to our hotel lobby and will be home to many major companies in two office towers, as well as restaurants, retail and fashion outlets to serve the busy, trendy area,” he explains.

THE BULL RUN A wealth of good taste in the heart of Sandton

Enjoy some of the best steaks in Johannesburg, peruse the extensive wine list or sip a signature cocktail in the centre of the city’s financial district.

Joburg-based interior designer, Tristan Du Plessis, was contracted to come up with the new concept, which takes inspiration from the New York Stock Exchange - adding international flair while keeping with the original style of the establishment. He explains that “we have aimed to create a welcoming and warm space with the Bull Run, true to its roots as a meat grill room, taking inspiration from upmarket New York style grill houses. We have custom designed and created most of the elements within the Bull Run, from light fittings and furniture to the handmade tiles on the walls, all with a nod to the Stock Exchange. This is a contemporary take on a traditional grill room, a space that is comfortable from breakfast through to suit-and-tie business dinners.”

Along with this brand-new design and re-opening, The Bull Run has yet again gone above and beyond with the unveiling of a bronze sculpture that captures the spirit of the neighbourhood in epic fashion. The larger-than-life sculpture, which measures three metres by two metres, depicts a raging bull, exemplifying the powerful dynamism of the city’s financial district.

With a larger-thanlife atmosphere, the Bull Run is effortlessly, yet affordably sumptuous. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, from 11 am until 10:30 pm every day, it’s an oasis of welcoming, no-fuss culinary sophistication, at ground zero in South Africa’s beating commercial heart. 20 Maude St, Sandown m 011 884 1400 1 www.thebullrun.co.za Q @thebullrun01 Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Neighbourhoods

Sandton CBD The Sandton Business District is known as being the wealthiest square mile in the continent, and the countries busiest and most cosmopolitan epicentre with around 10 000 businesses operating at present. Welcome to Sandton CBD, the high-energy mecca of business, residential, dining, shopping and tourism opportunities and anyone with a passion for the finer things in life.

C

onsidered the wealthiest square mile on the continent, Sandton’s Central Business District is home to some of the country’s biggest corporate players. And the battle for the tallest, widest and shiniest office park is well underway. We just can’t help but wonder who puts their hands up to wash all those windows. If you haven’t taken a drive and crisscrossed over Fredman Drive or Alice Lane lately, prepare for a double take. Driving this big business trend to the Sandton CBD over the last two decades has been a combination of access to facilities that range from world-class conferencing to hotels and dining and of course transport – like the Gautrain Station. A lifestyle mecca when it comes to shopping and fine-dining, those looking for the finer things in life are like moths to the Sandton CBD flame. There’s so much to do, we know, so we picked a few things for you to do first.

MAKE YOUR MARC Brand new to the precinct and ever so shiny comes the multi-purpose development on Maude and Rivonia Corner –known as The Marc. This shopping and lifestyle mecca opened its environmentally sustainable doors last month – well Tower B anyway. Tower A should make its appearance in March next year. With spots to shop, eat and workout, the base of the tower is worth a visit with the likes of Tasha’s, Starbucks and Food Lovers Market waiting for you. And, if you think this could be a super cool place to work out– hello quick 30 minutes on the treadmill at Planet Fitness before lunch – then check out the leasing opportunities for your business as well. 129 Rivonia Rd, Sandown m 011 775 1000 1 www.themarc.co.za

MORE AT BENMORE Never have change for parking? We love Benmore Centre for many reasons one of which has to be Admyt – the cashless parking system that makes you feel like a VIP with number plate recognition technology that opens the boom as you arrive at the mall and debits your credit card. When it comes to stores, Benmore has everything you need from Woolies and Pick ń Pay to Simply Asia and Col’Cacchio, but if there’s one thing that Benmore has that no one else does, it’s Lavana Beauty Spa – possibly one of the best Thai massages you’ll have in Jozi #justsaying. Grayston Dr & Benmore Rd, Benmore Gardens m 087 233 7220 1 www.benmorecentre.co.za

THE EATALIAN When in Italy, or not, eat good Italian food right? The Eatalian restaurant offers a classic, vibrant, fun feel and is owned by two Italian brothers, Fabio & Marco, who incorporate modern Roman inspired cuisine with traditional flavours. If you’re one of those “don’t talk to me before my first cup of coffee” types, then start your day with some freshly brewed beans from The Eatalian’s own roastery. Their ethically sourced coffee is roasted on site to create a great cup of coffee that is partnered with the most delicious breakfast this side of town. We highly recommend the thin based pizza or spaghetti bolognaise for lunch or dinner. If you’re keen on an early, light dinner, you can’t go wrong with the steak tartare. 126, 11th St, Sandton m 011 326 8786 1 www.theeatalian.co.za

THE BULL RUN Part of the institution that is the Balalaika Hotel, The Bull Run was only opened in 2000 but has become part of the legacy of the hotel that is now 70 years old. This year the restaurant was redone with a New York Stock Exchange style – totes approps for the precinct we think. There’s also some bullish chatter that a 3.2m long and 2.2m high bronze bull will be installed outside the restaurant, reminiscent of a bull located outside the New York Stock Exchange. Prize for the first person to send us a pic when that happens! 20 Maude St, Sandown m 011 884 1400 1 www.thebullrun.co.za

GRILLHOUSE, ALICE LANE The Grillhouse really needs no introduction – unless you’re a vegan, in which case sorry for you. We reckon if the walls of The Grillhouse Sandton could talk, we’d have a winning SA podcast on our hands about the art of the business deal over a sirloin and good malt. This is one of Jozi’s corporate go-to spots for local and international business folks, politicians and celebs – so if you like meat and people spotting, this is your jaunt. Building 1,11 Alice Lane, Sandhurst m 011 783 6132 1 www.thegrillhouse.co.za

LIZA’S AT CAPITAL HILL Never mind the house on the hill, have you tried Liza’s at Capital Hill? This is everything the corporate bunnies working in the CBD ever dreamed of. Having a quick breakfast meeting? Sorted – we suggest the paw paw power or smoked salmon scramble. You missed lunch because of work and need something comforting? How about the hot beef on rye or as an alternative one of their incredibly delicious salads? New business opportunity and forgot the catering? How about a corporate platter? Liza’s menu is convenient, healthy and yum! And did we mention that there’s free and safe parking? #winning 6 Benmore Rd, Benmore m 011 568 3335 1 www.capitalhillcafe.co.za Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

CLEAN YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

Spring-cleaning is the feel-good task that helps us get our homes ship-shape just before summer calls us to the great outdoors, but it shouldn’t stop there. As the seasons change, so does your skin – so it’s important to help it transition with ease by tweaking your beauty routine.

Because this season is all about new beginnings! Out with the old!

Lighten up

Think more matte

If you use your makeup brushes every day, you should wash them every week. Otherwise, they’ll become prime breeding grounds for bacteria (gross, we know!). To make sure you don’t forget to clean your brushes on the regular, make a brushwashing station near your bathroom sink. All you need is a couple of clean washcloths and a special cleansing solution. A cute jar to hold your brushes isn’t compulsory, but highly recommended! Your skincare needs change from season to season. Unless you have very dry skin, psoriasis or eczema, you should ditch your heavy winter cream in favour of a warmweather moisturiser that addresses transitional needs, such as extra UV exposure and humidity-induced breakouts. Your transitional moisturiser should have an SPF (of at least 30) and be lighter, but without skimping on hydration. You don’t want something that makes your skin chalky-looking.

20

Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

You should check the expiration dates on all of your makeup and skincare products at least twice a year – and what better time than spring? Yes, they do expire – and if you keep using them, you risk breakouts and bacterial infections (yikes!). Foundation, lipstick and lip-gloss should be tossed after one year, concealer and liquid liner after six months and mascara after three months. If you’re in doubt, throw it out! Beauty products that promise a dewy glow should be left behind with the colder months. Or, when the weather gets warmer, they’ll just turn your face into a puddle, which isn’t a pretty look! We’re not saying you have to throw away your usual foundation or BB cream – just consider adding a mattifying primer or finishing spray to your makeup regimen. These products will also extend the wear of your makeup (bonus!).

Scrub-a-dub-dub

During the winter months, dead skin cells build up on the surface of your skin. Exfoliating your skin with a good quality exfoliant will speed up the turnover of skin cells, remove dry flaky skin and reduce impurities that can cause blackheads, revealing baby skin in no time. It will also increase the penetration of your serums by amping up the delivery method. Tip: use a facial brush when exfoliating to keep the pressure even and avoid rubbing, which can cause friction and irritation.

Let your skin breathe

Last but not least, lay off the heavy foundation as part of your spring clean. It may cover well, but it can clog your pores and cause breakouts as well as sit in all those little crevices, highlighting dry areas and fine lines. Leave the full-coverage foundation for special occasions and only use a BB cream or light concealer to mask any imperfections or uneven areas. Your skin will breathe a sigh of relief and thank you with a healthy, radiant complexion!

J, it turns out you might want to rethink your idea of breakfast because Hemelhuijs has officially landed in Jozi. If you’re familiar with the charming So Yum restaurant, you’ll have heard that they have moved upstairs, still situated inside the immersive high-end Hyde Park Shopping Centre. Only this time they have joined forces with the innovation of Jacques Erasmus’s traditional Cape farm-style cuisine, which you’ll soon find out, is fantastic. We visited the brand-new space for a bountiful brunch, and the Hemlehuijs x So Yum collaboration is imaginative, innovative and redefining the city’s foodie scene. Yip, it’s downright genius. Don’t expect fussy tablecloths, ornate cutlery and synchronised

service but rather a beautiful rustic, farm-style contemporary design conceptualised into gratified dining. This is a feast for the senses. The breakfast is served in Jacques very own creations, Hemelhuijs’ original Sepia Collection stoneware crockery. The table décor includes a delicate sprinkling of Hemelhuijs’ aesthetic DNA. Signature items from the Hemelhuijs Home Collection feature on the table settings, such as its gold ceramic spoons, their activated charcoal black salt and the menu, which underpins the bold illustrations and photographic imagery styled and presented by Jacques.

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review…CRAFT PARKHURST

I

f you’ve followed the cities wave of craft foods, beers, gins, rums, etc. there is a slight chance you’re familiar with one of Parkhurst’s most admired hangouts. This spot defines the term hipster cool. Initially, after launching, the team seemed to have settled into a killer groove and the constant vibrations of laughter and vigorous energy were palpable even for casual onlookers. Especially because of its location right on the corner of the Parks’s trendy 4th Avenue, so as masses of Joburgers trickle out onto the pavement, the vibe is nothing short of electrifying. But because of this cramming, what it makes up for in ambiance it lacks in service, and at dinner time you might wait a while for a table. It turns out years later, fast forward to 2018 and it seems the space is still humming, however, they might want to rethink the menu and menu choices. Let's begin with the tattered state of the actual menu, which to be generous, looks like the dogs breakfast; (actually I don’t quite think Rover would even deem it appetising), a menu flawed by its hefty weight and whopping size and laden by its shabby appearance. Once you look past the torn and tatty appearance, you’ll notice some orgasmic options but some rather eccentric and nonsensical ones too. A tuna burger with Sriracha chilli and apple slaw, which I ordered and regretted, a bland, featureless patty, cooked well but the only hero was the refreshing slaw. Tuna and apple, I’m still not convinced. Then onto the traditional mac and cheese, gooey-tick, gluten free pasta tick (not sure its purpose) ropy, glutinous cheese - tick, flavour - error. The consistency was spot on but again lacking gusto, missing that sweet tang and that zesty melt–in-your-mouth, "I can't stop consuming" this kinda feeling. Nevertheless a victory for this restaurant is their chopped Mediterranean salad, it’s the greatest in the city, trust me! Imperfectly perfect rolled falafel balls, an inventive beetroot infused hummus, tangy tahini, avo and feta, topped with crispy freekah grain, all drenched in the tastiest basil pesto dressing. Drool worthy and the portion is more than mucho, so it is a hefty R135 (for vegetarian I might add) but it is oh-so-worth-it! Also their selection of craft beers, crafted spirits, artisan whiskeys, artisan roasted coffees, natural craft teas, health juices, matcha lattes and wines are fantastic. On their website it clearly states that the owners are on a quest to develop a unique restaurant with words such as hand made, old-school, authentic, attention to detail, artisanal and personal as major parts of the Craft vocabulary. They have certainly succeeded but perhaps a little more flavour and a few less parades on a plate.

chef OF THE MONTH

Reuben Riffel Reuben’s Restaurant & Bar is down to earth with a sophisticated culinary style that celebrates food in its entirety. The menu has a worldly theme with strong Asian and Cape Malay influences that showcase the modern, eclectic and contemporary feel of the restaurant while staying true to its South African Roots, “the core of our food offering will be Reubens classics, but we offer a changing menu that reflects not just the seasons but what is fresh and available” say Reuben. Rueben’s love for food was inspired at an early age as he grew up in a family that took it very seriously.

“We lived off produce from my grandfather’s land and most of our family had their own chickens and grew vegetables or fruit, so it’s always been part of my upbringing”. This passion for fresh, organic produce and ingredients translate into the way he appreciates and cooks food today and is apparent in his plans for a perfect springtime menu “it’s about an abundance of springtime vegetables - broad

beans, peas, asparagus, young garlic, free range chicken, lamb and trout. That’s what I’ll use on my spring menu” and customers can look forward to dishes like trout tartar and brandade, chilled carrot soup, broad beans, crème fraiche, marinated chicken supreme, crispy parmesan gnocchi, roasted pineapple lemongrass coulis, frozen white chocolate mousse, raspberries, toasted coconut and macadamia shavings during the warmer months. Other than the delicious food Reuben is also planning on hosting fabulous evenings, “from wine evenings, cognac food pairings and, my favourite, jazz - we have lots to get excited about”. Reuben, renowned for his culinary prowess, describes his cuisine as eclectic and unpretentious. There is an honest simplicity to the food he serves throughout his restaurants, underpinned by his focus on the finest seasonal produce sourced from nearby suppliers. His philosophy is to keep things uncomplicated, bringing out the natural flavours of each ingredient, and to strive for a perfect balance in the finished dish.

As Natasha Sideris, founder of Tashas, says, “Every Tashas is a little bit different and a little bit the same.” In creating Tashas Le Parc, Sideris was inspired by her many trips to France. The interior courtyard is reminiscent of the cafés along the Boulevard SaintGermain with marble café tables and classic French Bistro chairs. As with all Tashas, the attention to detail is impeccable.

The long, luxurious, green velvet sofa with natural light streaming through the skylight is the perfect place for a relaxing respite in the middle of the day while the elegant elevated bar tables dotted around the courtyard are an ideal place to for a coffee, light lunch or a meeting. ccording to Liza Landauer, calories are like cash…you cannot waste it, and you cannot rob yourself of the sumptuous experience at Liza’s at Capital Hill – it’s worth every calorie.

This is Liza’s third rodeo, and with a rich heritage, she has always loved the idea of creatively nurturing people through food and making a difference. She believes in never underestimating the power that food wields, and a perfect example in her café in the heart of Sandton’s CBD; is her signature sloppy joe, which takes customers back to their school tuckshops. As they take a mouthful, they are sixteen again. Food has the power to transport through memory, and Liza’s colourful food journey is made up of such vignettes. This Café has also been voted for the best hot beef on rye in Johannesburg by Eat Out magazine. Having started out at Reuben’s Great Sandwich, Liza and her partner also operated a successful state-of-the-art hot dog stand during the 2010 World Cup, where she mastered the art of hotdogs. To this day she still sells these hotdogs using only kosher sausages- beef or chicken and serves them with the same addictive mustard sauce.

Love is the key to her kitchen’s success, and treating ingredients with respect, Liza and her team, who have been with her for over a decade, design dishes to satisfy their clients and cater to their needs. FROM BARN TO BOARDROOM

The Use of Equine Facilitated Learning for Leadership Development. For centuries, people have made use of horses and their muscle power to advance human development – for transport during the wars and for recreational purposes. These days, however, corporates and businesses are seeing the value of horses’ intuition as a tool to enable managers to master soft skills and become authentic leaders.

Equilibrium, a coaching and development consultancy based in Johannesburg, led by Nadine Jackson, Nikki Lowe and Mpho Makwana, have developed the Equilibrium Equine Experience – an experiential approach using the engagement with horses to enable delegates to embark on a journey of self-discovery and development. The method has proven successful amongst corporate companies of varying sizes giving individuals in a team - regardless

of seniority, qualification, age or gender - powerful personal awareness with realtime results, ensuring sustainability and lasting impact. Apart from building trust between team members, equine facilitated learning helps to develop the skills required to manage and navigate through uncomfortable, emotionally intense situations and move towards a state of effective conflict resolution and agreement more rapidly – essential skills for any business with culturally diverse teams. If an organisation is looking for sustained, meaningful, leadership change, the Equilibrium approach is something that they should consider. orses are natural facilitators in both leadership and followership – as herd animals, they have an instinctive ability to determine team roles and maintain a disciplined ‘work’ ethic for mutual benefit. As flight animals, they follow energy and intention more than words – honing in on non-verbal communication and emotional intelligence which they subconsciously mirror. This forms the basis behind equine facilitated learning – by working with horses as facilitators, delegates are able to become aware of the non-verbal messages they are radiating – improving their ability to operate effectively within a team environment.

READY, STEADY,

party or not?

At university we called it the pre-game. Now that we’re grownups with jobs we refer to it as the quick after work drink (which is never really one drink right?). Whatever you prefer, it’s essentially the warm-up, the drink or drinks before a night out on the town that determines the tone of the evening – so best you do it right. Here are the top suggestions on where to get the party started (or not) courtesy of some of our HJ readers. The Living Room

Poison

Produced in the Valley of wine and roses, the Boet Beer range calls the quaint village of Robertson its home. The range is brewed using state of the art equipment using the finest mountain water and the best-imported malt and hops. It’s the perfect accompaniment to any braai this heritage month!

OF THE MONTH Boet Beer

Launch date: The range was launched in October 2016. How it is made: Brewed with malted barley, hops, water and yeast. Styles: Lager, Golden Ale, Pale Ale, American Pale Ale and English IPA. ❶ Hoppiness: Lager – A golden fresh and crisp lager with a well-balanced bitterness. Golden Ale – Earthy hints of hops and malty sweetness. Pale Ale – Traditional ale with balanced malt and a fruity hops flavour. American Pale Ale – Full bodied modern style pale ale packed with American hops. English IPA – Medium bitterness and a hint of soft citrus hops flavour. ❷ Cool fact: From chemical analysis on pottery, research suggests that beer has been brewed in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia as long as 7 000 years ago. ➌ Hangover Cure: Another beer ;)

➍ Best cocktail: We recommend finding your favourite Boet Beer style and enjoying it chilled with family and friends. Alternatively, a craft beer shandy with a strongly flavoured beer like Boet’s American Pale Ale. All you need is lemonade and a lemon slice to garnish! It couldn’t get easier! Malawian born artist, Billie Zangewa’s love affair with art started with a coloured pencil drawing of Princess Diana. And just like the people’s princess, Zangewa too is on a journey to make people feel through her work.

“I

want people to feel happy when they see my work. Just to make someone feel is a really big thing” says the artist announced as the featured artist for the 2018 edition of the FNB JoburgArtFair. “I remember seeing that coloured drawing of Princess Diana when I was a child. It was so beautiful, and it touched me in the most profound way. I knew right then and there that this was what I wanted to do – to give people this feeling.” Billie Zangewa was born to a South African mother and Malawian father. She was raised in Gaborone, Botswana; and educated there, as well as in Malawi. Later Zangewa relocated to South Africa to complete her fine arts degree at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Zangewa’s studies in printmaking allowed her to explore various techniques and materials, subsequently initiating her passion for working with rich surfaces and textiles, with a particular love for silk. Zangewa works primarily with raw silk offcuts in intricate hand-stitched collages. Her relationship with the material is a love affair all of its own. “Silk makes me look good. It is a material that is generous, luxurious and easy to work with. I think silk was looking for me as much I was looking for it” she muses. Being announced as the featured artist for the 2018 edition of the FNB JoburgArtFair is a big deal and Zangewa’s excitement for this opportunity is palpable. She explains that she was approached by the director of the FNB JoburgArtFair, Mandla Sibeko. “He made the offer over a working lunch and I was

so thrilled, he said I could take time to think about it, but I said yes right away! I feel really blessed and thankful for the support, I never take it for granted. Mandla and many others have been champions of my work and believed in my vision.” So, what does Zangewa focus on in her work? An artist should create narratives about what they know. So Zangewa gave it some thought, only to realise that what she knew most about - was herself. “So, I started exploring identity through the different experiences in my life. At first, they were concerning romantic love and then as time went on, motherhood and daily life.” Besides being inspired by what you know, any words for young aspiring female artists? “Stay true to yourself and your vision and your time will surely come. I believe that there is an opportunity for every one of us. Also, know that the art world is watching Africa. This in itself is an opportunityˮ. The opportunity to participate in this year’s FNB JoburgArtFair is already a career highlight for Zangewa. The artist feels strongly that is it initiatives likes this one that are critical for the development of the local industry and nurturing of young talent in Africa. The FNB JoburgArtFair is Africa’s leading art fair focused on contemporary art from the continent and diaspora. Now in its eleventh year, it continues to strengthen this position by presenting the finest of contemporary African art alongside memorable exhibitions and groundbreaking initiatives. Cath this year’s fair at The Sandton Convention Centre from 6 – 9 September.

anzibar’s uniqueness has many facets and two of them, in particular, are its cuisine and culture. A mecca of Swahili and Islamic tradition, Africanism, heritage and history, if one does not imbibe the culture, one cannot succeed at indulging in everything this island has to offer. The pure magnificence makes it rather difficult to decide on a firm favourite but allow us to try. Descending off the East Coast of Africa is this Tanzanian archipelago. Flying over the country, the mass of water swells into the horizon as the raw, natural beauty mesmerizes you. The crowning glory of the island is, of course, the azure waters. JEWEL OF TANZANIA

ZANZIBAR A delicious destination 58

Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

This is what we like to refer to as barefoot luxury. In the finest arc of the Zanzibar Island lies this exquisite hotel. As the scarlet rays from the sunset begin to deepen and you arrive at this maritime oasis, you’ll instantly be swept off your feet. It is everything the website promises and more, your expectations will be met, and we have no doubt you will want to return as much as we did. Arriving at this exclusive location with all-encompassing views of the striking ocean, you’ll soon realize why Zanzibar has reached the top of everyone’s “if only list.” The hotel boasts nine villas, all abundantly spacious, alike in size and design, and all with breathtaking views. Because the hotel is situated on top of a cliff, you’ll gingerly prowl the area as you marvel at the plump hillsides. Each villa is named after an animal, in Swahili, and so Pweza the octopus was our residence - a sanctuary beyond measure, with cascading ceilings, warm grey tones and furnishings contrasting the exterior landscape and a private plunge pool. Plus, we were extremely pleased to discover that the hotel is extremely serious about creating a plastic-free zone. They use only paper straws and you will not find bottled water anywhere in the hotel, except in the rooms. There are moments when a lie in is mandatory, but this is not the place. We recommend setting the alarm for 6:00am, brewing a warm cuppa and relishing in the mornings sunrise as the welcoming baboons swing from the palm trees. Then put on your sneakers and head to their bountiful vegetable and fruit garden and try fit in a run through the rolling banana fields. They have created this inspiring 1km flat track, which caters to your every whim and wheeze. It is an extraordinary adventure and as you run past the chicken coup you’ll feel deeply conjugated to Zanzibar and all its glory. As time thickens so does the humidity and so do the hunger pangs. Time for breakfast and yes you guessed it, overlooking the awe-inspiring landscape of the white bleached beaches and cobalt blue waters. Breakfast is a culinary journey of the juiciest fresh fruit, freshly baked croissants, eggs any way you choose and a rich cup of caffeine to go with it. If none of these tickles your tastebuds, request anything you like, your wish is their command. The staff and chef will ensure each meal and every bite is just as you like it. Dinner is a five-course adventure with the freshest seafood, caught the very same day; grilled red snapper enhanced with fresh herbs, smoked carrot coulis and vegetable millefeuille, it’s simply orgasmic. And whilst your taste buds are tingling so are your ears because you’ll enjoy traditional Taarab music, started by a sultan in 1870 and known as the soul of Zanzibar. Influenced with musical traditions of the African Great Lakes, North Africa, The Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. This all-inclusive experience is what dreams are made of… K www.thezanzibarcollection.com

travel Baraza Resort and Spa Baraza Resort and Spa For all-inclusive luxury This unique resort is exactly how life would be if the sultans never left the island. Set in another realm and certainly allowing for the ideal escape for ordinary mundane city life. You are transported to a world where smoking shisha is routine, bathing in sultan baths is commonplace and indulging in the five-star Frangipani spa (with incomparable therapists from Bali, Thailand and India) becomes mandatory. In the reception area sits traditional, Swahili and Arabic architecture, serenaded by classical pieces, luxury woods and brass lanterns. The interior is exotic and unfamiliar; it’s a fusion of Arabic, Swahili and Indian design transforming and elevating your vacation the moment you arrive. It is clear that the overall intent is tranquillity, especially in all the villa styles. There are thirty villas with options of an oceanfront villa, a sultan villa and a garden view villa, all with the choice of one or two bedrooms, ideal for a family getaway or a romantic escape. The sultan’s lounge bed, dramatic arches and the plunge pool are highlights and so is the freestanding bath with deluxe products that they create themselves. It would be easy to think the Baraza Resort and Spa is just another commercial allinclusive resort, but it is not. It is so much more. Days are spent in luxury, alongside stellar service and the most superb dining with an offering of three restaurants. There is an adult pool to dip into after your spa experience as well as another pool in the main area, a beachfront view, daily hatha yoga classes, sweet-smelling cocktails at Hova Bar, cooking demonstrations, Swahili bands playing in the background, beach bike rides and high tea served daily in the tea lounge. Oh, did we mention they have their own watersports centre and all activities (not motorised) are included? Also, just 300m from the resort is the water club where you can learn to sail or kite surf.

Baraza Resort and Spa However, the cream of the crop has to be the seaside luncheon. In the afternoon we were treated to a self-indulgent three-course lunch, under the palm trees, beside the surging waters, in fact, you couldn’t possibly get closer to the sea. With dishes that included crab and avocado salad, coconut three ways; panna cotta, Crème Brule and freshly made ice cream. The grand finale though, had to be the grilled cigal dish and fish fillet with Creole sauce, dauphin potato and crisp vegetables. cigal is of the lobster family and famous in Zanzibar, it goes down sleekly with a glass of chenin. You couldn’t ask for anything more… K www.thezanzibarcollection.com Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

selection of Italian cuisine, curry dishes, delectable desserts and the catch of the day.

For a paradise getaway with the family ‘Jambo’ (hello) and ‘asante sana’ (thank you) are the first words you’ll hear upon entering this picturesque location. They create the paradise and you choose the dream. We highly recommend your imagination whisks you off to visit this hotel. Cushioned on this tropical island that is Zanzibar, this hotel is on top of the seashore with wavering banks of rich soft sands. This is one of the most dynamic and serene parts of the island. During the winter months, the tide stays hidden until the afternoon, signifying the ability to walk on water and search for starfish, ankle-deep. Look up in any direction towards the sky ending and the raw environment will hypnotize you. The hotel boasts nine restaurants and bars which means when you book your week holiday, you will be spoiled for choice, especially if you opt for the all-inclusive package. When we first thought about all-inclusive it seemed rather gluttonous yet somewhat thrilling and after experiencing it, we highly recommend it. You can eat at a new restaurant and delve into a new country and their cuisine every evening. The beach bars, which serve a casual style luncheon on the beach, are charming. We loved the Sakura Sushi Bar where you can make your very own traditional Japanese noodle dish and snack on some sashimi. A holiday in Zanzibar allows you to look at food in a different way, especially here. You’ll eat and indulge in a unique way and enjoy the heart of the meals. We also enjoyed the buffet-style lunch and dinner with a gorgeous

If you’re a family, you’ll also appreciate the weekly entertainment schedule. Expect a fiesta with live bands playing, mythological acrobatics, bongo flavour dances and hong-tied drum Ngoma shows. There is even a piano bar, coconut weaving, beach volleyball and so much more. Nowhere is the concept of balance more understood than here, peaceful adult time is secured perfectly with the kids being whisked away and entertained. There are also combat yoga classes on offer for adults twice a week or why not try a tae-bo class with coach Rene. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy then opt for a snorkel or a dive at one of the thirty sites (for divers at all levels), or even be daring and try a starry night-dive. The climax, however, has to be the Arabic and African themed evening, every Tuesday, where you’ll be treated to exotic belly dancers, traditional food like hummus, cous cous and moreish chickpea and lentil curry all whilst dining under the stars, alongside the glistening pool area. It’s a sight that never fails to astonish and certainly sets the scene of the impact of rich culture and tradition embedded in this country. Kick your shoes off, pull up your trousers and prepare to be pleasantly jumbled deep down into this diverse culture. K www.dreamofzanzibar.com

MANDELA DAY With the Johannesburg Expo Centre

Words Carly Ritzy Images Supplied

t was all hands on deck this Madiba Day as The Johannesburg Expo Centre team completed yet another successful Nelson Mandela Day activation. This year in July, The JEC once again embraced the Inkwenkwezi Primary School in Diepkloof and Riverlea Primary School respectively as part of its long term commitment to empowering the youth in the communities in which it operates.

School echoed these words “The JEC is part of our school family. They anticipate our needs before us and we are so grateful to Craig and his team for all they do for us”

“Our team and associates were hands on and got involved in the re-carpeting and painting of both venues and supplying a variety of quality reading books.” Craig Newman, CEO of the JEC adds. “We couldn’t do this without everyone and their support”

Many hands make light work and together with a multitude of dedicated sponsors, the Johannesburg Expo Centre handed over two beautifully revamped libraries to both of its adopted schools as part of improving the schools’ facilities so as “We’ve taken on these schools for the long to create a more stable, nurturing and happy game and are dedicated to seeing these facilities teaching environment for the learners. continue to improve in the coming years for the benefit of the children who attend these Working with sponsors like Expo Guys, GL schools. PAINT, TRENDS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN Meet Yolande Terblanche From Granny B’s Old Fashioned Paint

Chalk paint is used to create a chalky or aged appearance adding a unique touch to furniture, walls and other interior items. Paint containing calcium carbonate (chalk) has been used for hundreds of years and has been around way longer than just the last 30 years. But, there’s more to it than just that. The paint is formulated to have incredible adhesion properties. It can be applied to just about any surface with very little and often no pre-preparation or sanding required and it works well on wood, cement, plastic, glass, melamine and even fabric. An interesting fact that you might not know (because we certainly didn’t) was that when you use the Granny B’s brand of chalk-finish paints and sealers on your baby’s furniture, your kitchen or around your pets, you can be sure it’s safe, “Its water based and is also gentle on the skin as well as the environment.” Says Yolande.

Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Spicing up your space during any time of the year can be a bit intimidating, so Yolande offers some advice: Trends for spring? Bold colours for walls and furniture, bling’d up dark wood furniture with a hint of Scandinavian, artisanal handmade furniture, tropical prints with a mixture of lush and energising greens, brass furniture and accessories like mirrors and side tables and, of course, marble. What’s the best way to prepare a room for painting? Once you have decided on a theme or colour palette, you can plan the rest of the furniture and accessories around that. Our colour range caters for all types of pallets and we encourage the mixing of colours which is great for ombre’s. Make sure that your theme is unique to your own style. What is your advice for adding colour to a room? Paint one wall in the room a contrasting colour, add some green or flowering plants or plants with lots of foliage to bring some personality to your room. Adding a cheerful lamp or colourful lampshade will add a touch of interest. A colourful rug under a chair or table always adds a nice touch and if you have a large bare wall add a mirror and paint the frame a bright colour. Here at HJ we believe that your living space has a direct impact on your mood. So, since spring has blessed us with its warm cheery presence, why not amp up your space to match. Visit Granny B’s website at 1www.grannyb.co.za to find a stockist near you or conveniently shop online and have your order delivered to your front door.

ranny B’s Old Fashioned Paint is a family owned and operated business, established in mid-2015, that has grown to become the leading locally founded chalk-finish paint product brand in South Africa. They have grown to over 200 stockists across Southern Arica and now service South African, Namibian, Zimbabwean and Zambian markets with an ever growing interest from countries as far flung as Australia. Granny B’s wanted to make their product available to everyone who had an artistic urge or simply wanted to re-love ageing furniture, or even take up upcycling as a hobby. Their product would suit beginners, DIY enthusiasts or even seasoned furniture painters and decorators. And so their story began…we sat down with Yolande Terblanche to pick her brain about everything from paint to all things interior.

What’s your favourite and least favourite social media platform and why? My favourite social media platform is Facebook. I love seeing memes and I really think people have an amazing sense of humour on it. I believe that people are more themselves on Facebook versus other platforms. My least favourite would definitely be Instagram. Although I am truly grateful for everything I’ve managed to receive from Instagram, I find it praises unrealistic beauty standards and delivers a false sense of belonging and affirmation. I’ve seen and received a lot of bullying on the app and find it a place of negativity.

Hello Joburg • September 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

What advice would you give to your younger self ? I would tell myself that everything will be OK and it will all work out as it should. I used to worry so much about where I would end up and if I was doing the right thing. I wasted so much time being stressed out at a young age. I would take all those fears and worries away and assure myself that life will take me where it wants me to go and I need to be OK with that. Your top 3 fitness/ wellness tips? Drink lots of water. Not only does it help with weight

loss and living a healthy lifestyle, it is my trick to clear skin. I try to drink 8 glasses a day. Exercise – even if it’s not at the gym. I do a home workout every night and it is so simple and has really changed my life. I feel more motivated and have tons more brain power. Stay positive. Keep believing in yourself and believe that you can do anything you put your mind to. Your favourite pizza toppings? Bacon, avo and feta! Oh and pineapple does go on pizza. Your favourite hangout spot in Jozi? I am almost always in Maboneng. My favourite thing to do is go to the Maboneng Market and visit The Living Room afterwards. Maboneng is full of colour, culture and beauty. The views are amazing. What song best describes you? I love music and have many different songs that describe the many different parts of me. My power song and the one that relates to me so much is a goodie but an oldie. It is ‘Survivor by Destiny’s Child’. It’s all about working hard and not letting other things get you down but rather coming out on top. Q @Jade_Voges 1 www.jadetvoges.wixsite.com/jadetaylor
