ccording to healthline.com, there are seven proven benefits of dark chocolate. Besides the fact that it is very nutritious, it is also a powerful source of antioxidants, it may improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, it raises HDL and protects LDL from oxidation, it may reduce your risk of heart disease, it could improve brain function and it could even protect your skin from the sun. No wonder we’re so fond of chocolate!

South Africa has some really impressive talent when it comes to making chocolate, but also when it comes to making things with chocolate. Hello Pretoria • April 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Beyers Chocolate Chocolate factory owner, Kees Beyers, knew at the age of seven that he would one day be in the chocolate business. Between the ages of 12 and 17, he had already qualified as a pastry chef. When he was 18, he travelled to South Africa with the idea of working here for a few months and then returning to Belgium, but he fell in love with the country as quickly as he had with chocolate and the rest is history. Today, Kees is a Master Chocolatier and through Beyers Chocolates, he combines Belgian traditions with South African inspiration. They often team up with local brands like Amarula to bring South Africans some of the most unique and delicious treats like their Amarula Dark Chocolate and Amarula Fudge. They also have gift boxes like their Truffle Collections and their beautifully packaged slabs and animal droppings of different flavours are popular gifts. Oh, and of course their Craft Gin Truffles – deliciously fruity and surprisingly naughty gin-flavoured milk chocolate truffles – are a must-try! 1 www.beyerschocolates.com

WIN WIN WIN! Beyers is giving away an Easter-themed hamper to one lucky reader! Go read more about it on our website: www. hellopretoria.co.za Jack Rabbit Chocolate Studio Stephanie and Christelle, the owners of Jack Rabbit Chocolate Studio at Waterkloof Heights, have their mother’s baking to thank for where they are today. Stephanie went from breaking eggs into mud (to her mother’s frustration) to a professional chocolatier who creates luxurious artisanal chocolates and confections. Her sister, Christelle, is a chocolate snob who assesses chocolates and she also plays the role of shop assistant. Jack Rabbit has won gold in the European Open Category of the International Chocolate Awards, as well as silver in the world finals of the International Chocolate Awards hosted in London. Their chocolates are unique and really pretty, with different collections that people can buy from the shop or online. Even

their chocolate bars are almost too beautiful to eat! Their Artist Collection box of 24 is a stunning gift, consisting of the chef ’s selection of 24 chocolates, available from the weekly variety of flavours. 1 www.jackrabbitchocolate.co.za Ile de Chocolat This handmade chocolate studio is located in Cullinan, which is not too far out from Pretoria and definitely worth the visit. Kirsten Walters’ chocolates are all preservative free and her chocolate studio is open to the public for gift shopping and tours. After receiving the Valedictorian Award for the best student from the International School of Chocolate Arts, she opened up shop in Cape Town, which was followed by five more stores across the country within a timeframe of three years. With the birth of her twin sons, she took a break from it all, only to have them ask why she stopped making chocolates! So, she has set up a new chocolate studio from where she once again makes chocolates by hand by applying traditional Swiss techniques. E @iledechoc Le Kreamery Gourmet Coffee and Baking The 26-year-old owner of Le Kreamery in Eldoraigne, Riyadh Cassim and his wife Raeesa, started the franchise four years ago. You might be misled by the name but the menu doesn’t just offer good coffee and baked items and it’s also not necessarily your typical coffee shop. It’s an innovative Halaal eatery and dessert lounge catering to the large Indian community in Centurion, and is also a really refreshing experience for anyone who wants to try something different. The menu is full of surprises, with desserts and other dishes from all over the world. It is, however, the chocolate themed, specialised desserts that will catch your attention. From

Cornflake and Nutella French Toast to Texan Cookie and Brownie Fries, S’mores that are available in Lindor or Nutella and a Fried Oreo and Churro Platter with a variety of chocolates. In this menu, everything’s got a twist to it and that’s what we love about this place – its desserts are unpredictable, delicious and creative. E @lekreamery WhiskAway Ice Cream and Sorbet Anything that’s chocolate flavoured is fine by us. WhiskAway Ice Cream and Sorbet takes flavouring ice cream one step further and makes banting, diabetic, lactose-free and vegan ice cream in a variety of flavours including chocolate. They also have ice cream for people with allergies and if you don’t like the usual sugars, they even make an ice cream that is sweetened with honey. They are located at Waterkloof Heights and often offer creative classes in collaboration with Jack Rabbit like the recent Chocolate and Ice Cream Sandwich Class. They also host Ice Cream Socials, so be sure to follow them online to stay posted on when it takes place again. E @WhiskAwayIC

Whether it comes in a bar, a cup or an ice cream cone, chocolate has a way of making things better. Did you know? • Both Cadbury and Nestle established factories in South Africa in the early 1900s. • Nestle’s Peppermint Crisp chocolate and Cadbury’s Chomp have been said to be two local products that South Africans living abroad miss the most. • Many years ago, cocoa beans were used as a currency and in parts of Latin America, it counted as currency until the 19th century! • Initially, chocolate was for drinking only. It was only in the 1850s that the first solid chocolate was served. This happened when Englishman, Joseph Fry, added more cocoa butter rather than hot water, to cocoa powder and sugar. R232 MILLION How to blow it in ONE DAY

onsider enrolling yourself at the University of Pretoria and study one of their most expensive courses like a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. Six years could cost you up to R392 000. Buy a watch at The Vault, Menlyn Park. The Summit 2 Black Steel Milanese Edition goes for about R16 800. Become a watch collector and add the Panerai Luminor Due – 45mm for R362 839 and the A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Striking Time 44.2MM men’s watch from Luxury Time at Menlyn Corporate Park for a striking R935 900.

8

Get yourself a sweet ride! An Aston Martin Vanquish S Coupe goes for R6 500 000. Add a Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB 2016, which goes for R10 500 000 at Daytona and have them deliver it. Build a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet at a cost of R2 500 420 from the Porsche Centre on Lynnwood Road. Then go buy yourself a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter for R6 264 300. Hello Pretoria • April 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

It’s only fair to give a tenth of your winnings to charity. Pretoria has numerous charities that can benefit from a generous donation. Spread the R23 200 000 among some of Pretoria’s charities like 67 Blankets, Stop Hunger Now Meal Packing, The Viva Foundation, New Beginningz, Pretoria Care for the Aged, Save the Children, PEN, Lifeline and Dogtown SA. After all this splurging, you might be hungry! Plan ahead and book yourself a professional chef from France. Fly him in with Air France and let him cook you a private dinner. Be sure to book the La Premiere flight cabin for R80 575 and pay him another R20 000 for the dinner. Last, but not least, bring Pierneef back to his hometown by making an offer to the last buyer of his painting called Farm Jonkershoek with Twin Peaks Beyond. The painting was bought for R20 462 400 in 2017 and it might take some convincing, so why not offer the owner double the amount, which adds up to R40 924 800?

We all know that once the bug bites, it bites properly. While you won by trying your luck, why not push your luck a little further by buying a racehorse? The most expensive racehorse for 2018 is called Lady Aurelia and she will cost you round about R106 532 600! We’re sure there will be a way to do this online. Then go bid on something crazy like a business lunch for charity with someone like Warren Buffet, which recently went for R36 951 380 online. An R180 000 specialized bicycle from Lynnwood Cyclery will bring you to an amount of R235 361 614. If you are able to bargain a bit and there is some money left, Time Square’s Globe Bar sells Louise Tres cognac at R75 000 per bottle.

And, that’s how you do it!

The HOTlist

For Anke Potgieter, wife and mother from Meyerspark, Pretoria in five words is Jacarandas, thunderstorms, Afrikaans, vibrant and crafty.. Anke is the owner of a newly founded catering business (so new, it doesn’t even have a name yet), and supplies Birillo Coffee Shops with delectable quiches. She also caters for individuals, so now you know who to contact for easy, heat-up-and-eat dinner options: ankebos@gmail.com. If she could choose, she would love to live in one of Brooklyn or Waterkloof ’s long, Jacaranda-lined streets, but living in Meyerspark also has its perks. “For starters, we have the most amazing view over Pretoria.” She says the area is very central, with easy access to all the major highways and it is also very close to the botanical gardens - a favourite attraction for the Potgieter family. She is also very excited about the fact that cycads and succulents grow so well in this rocky area of town, as they are very easy to maintain. It’s also a very water-wise gardening method and definitely gets our stamp of approval! Anke and her family have been living in the Jacaranda City for almost three years and for her, family and friends are what makes the city home. She enjoys exploring the city and doesn’t mind driving to Brooklyn for her shopping. Her favourite shopping spot is Brooklyn Mall they are also very fond of Uitkyk, meat and supermarket in Silverton. 1 www.brooklynmall.co.za 1 www.uitkykvleismark.co.za Relish Bistro in Hatfield is another favourite, boasting a safe outdoor play area for the children. Eating out with two little ones is quite the challenge, though, so the Potgieter kitchen is currently the restaurant of choice. 1 www.relishbistro.co.za For Anke, Pretoria is the perfect city to live in as it has enough to offer for your agenda to always be filled with festivals, park runs and parties. The fact that the city is so laid-back, while still offering vibey attractions makes it even more special. HOOD SCOUTING WOODLANDS

Looking at Woodlands, the greenery around it is evident. Hence the name of the suburb which apparently – according to Google Maps - qualifies as a suburb even though it consists only of Woodlands Lifestyle Estate.

Heat Grill Room and Wine Bar

Overlooking the greens of Woodhill Golf Course, the Heat Grill Room is situated in the Woodlands Boulevard Shopping Complex, catering to golfers and locals alike. At night, Pretoria’s glittery skyline bedazzles diners from this spacious restaurant while they enjoy unique dishes prepared from super-aged meats (as they put it) and speciality grills. Their menu boasts a variety of options, including servings from the sea, shellfish, combos and platters. They also offer an array of craft beers and gins to choose from, as well as a very extensive wine list.

LET’S TAKE A PEEK WOODLANDS’ #RESTAURANTPIAZZA REVEALED Is Woodlands Mall in your hood or do you visit them often? If so, you’ve surely noticed the construction workers in their blue trousers and hard hats. It’s not for nothing, we can assure you!

12

The mall claims to be designed for convenience and it seems that the new restaurant piazza will certainly attest to that. A whole new kiddies’ play area is being built, with tunnels, slides and climbs that will keep’em busy for hours. The mall has also been greening up a bit, bringing in five trees that create a very inviting, welcoming atmosphere. The kiddies’ play area is surrounded by top restaurant franchises, including Mugg & Bean, Wok ’n Roll, Woolworths Café, Ocean Basket, O’Galito, Heat Grill Room and Cappuccinos and the popular Cups & Cones are conveniently located for kids to grab a scoop. Cups & Cones will also give kids the opportunity to decorate their own ice-cream during the launch of the restaurant piazza at the end of the month. Some of the mall’s restaurants even seized the opportunity to do some revamping too. O’Galito, Heat Grill Room and Cappuccinos Hello Pretoria • March 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

are all changing things up a bit and we are very excited to see how they’ve incorporated the latest restaurant trends in their spaces. There are also two new, exciting restaurants coming in: Casa Bella with their Italian-inspired pizzas, pasta and grills and Mooi, with their South African tapas. The mall’s bathrooms are also undergoing a complete facelift. In addition to ice-creams and slides, Nu Metro has also come to the party, offering all their movies at half-price on launch weekend, 26 to 28 April 2019. The release of the long-anticipated movie, Avengers: Endgame, is also on this same weekend, so you’ll have to jump for your tickets! To qualify for half-price tickets, you’ll have to visit Nu Metro Woodlands and join Nu Metro’s scene club. On the weekend of the launch, Ocean Basket will also be hosting a Greek evening where you’ll be able to break some plates, while other restaurants will also host some great activations. One thing is for sure: It’s going to be a fun-filled end to April.

he excitement is slowly but surely building up towards the end of April when the Restaurant Piazza will officially be launched. Being around since 2004, Woodlands has recently started the process of revamping its restaurant and piazza area which will be more family friendly – an area where parents can enjoy a cup of coffee without kids nagging about when they can go home. In fact, your little ones might just be the ones who want to stay longer once they’ve seen what Woodlands has in store for them.

Chocolate

For many, chocolate is the main culprit when it comes to migraines, acne and obesity. This is not necessarily based on facts, though. On the contrary, chocolate might even be good for you! Healthy Heart According to myvmc.com, there is evidence that suggests that chocolate plays a role in the performance of your endothelium, the tissue layer that lines your arteries. Apparently, consuming chocolate increases the amount of nitric oxide which causes arteries to expand and facilitate blood flow. This also has a positive impact on your cardiovascular health. Flavanol, one of the polyphenols found in cocoa, stimulates nitric acid secretion, which then widens the arteries. Nitric oxide also has anti-platelet effects, which means it protects against the formation of blood clots. There is also evidence that shows that chocolate consumption can reduce blood pressure and that moderate consumption of dark chocolate could reduce the risk of coronary problems. Something that we found fascinating was the conclusion from a Norwegian study which suggests that chocolate consumption can even improve insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of diabetes.

16

While evidence regarding chocolate’s effect on cancer is still somewhat contradictory, there are even studies that have shown that cocoa-derived flavonoids interrupt the replication of cancer cells. Hello Pretoria • April 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Sweet Beauty As we very well know, nutritional intake has a huge effect on our skin. It also has an effect on our skin’s photoprotection (protection from light). Dietary antioxidants like flavanol in cocoa might have a photoprotective effect on your skin by reducing the skin cells’ sensitivity to UV exposure. We also know that sugar has a negative effect on our skin. So, what about chocolate? According to Emma Hobson from the International Derman Institute and Dermalogica, dark chocolate is the way to go. Why?

Dark chocolate contains more zinc, which is a crucial component in the healing process for your skin. It also contains 50% less sugar, which is great because sugar hardens skin proteins, causing premature ageing. The large amount of cocoa polyphenols, like flavanol, are terrific antioxidants which in turn have numerous benefiting effects. According to overstock.com antioxidants calm inflammation, it helps to firm your skin, it plumps out your skin and makes it appear younger, it helps with the treatment of scar tissue and the reparation of sun-damaged skin. Dark chocolate prevents the breakdown of collagen, which is important for making your skin look younger. It is also rich in Vitamins A, B1, C, D and E, as well as iron and calcium. Rather go for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. Try Lindt’s LES GRANDES Dark Hazelnut, Swiss Classic Surfin or their EXCELLENCE range. Woolworths also has organic dark chocolate on their shelves which is definitely worth a try. You’ll also find DV Chocolate on their shelves - deliciously pure, dark chocolate. Nova is an absolute niche with the most beautiful packaging! They sell sugar- free dark chocolate, hot chocolate and chocolate balsamic reductions and you’ll find them at our restaurant of the month, Chocolat et Café.

Inside there is a counter bedazzled with numerous types of cakes, macaroons and glass bowls filled with nougat and there is a chocolate bar where you can choose from a wide variety of proudly South African chocolates. Their chocolate suppliers include Geldhof Chocolatier, The Chocolate Tier, Lilly’s from Snyman Sjokolateur, Ile de Chocolat (who recently opened up shop in Cullinan), Honest Chocolate (whose chocolates are organic from bean to bar), Winston & Julia Artisan Chocolates and CocoAfair’s handcrafted chocolates. They also stock some of Nova’s sugar (and guilt) free chocolates.

hat started out as a small chocolate café at The Village in Hazelwood has now become a haven for food, chocolate and nature lovers alike. Chocolat et Café has been located at the old Woes Lekker premises since September last year and they have wholeheartedly made it their own with orchids and chandeliers and impressive wallpaper that puts you smack bam in the middle of a small, rural town in France. The chess board floor tiles and splashes of colour through paintings and couches all over make for a vibey, modern atmosphere. The nursery surrounding its rustic, red and blue farms-style entrance complements its essence perfectly and brings with it a calm, relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy that perfect cup of coffee from some of the prettiest mugs we’ve seen in ages.

They even have a chocolate omelette, made with dark chocolate, filled with chocolate mousse and strawberries, and their French toast and flapjacks also come with a speciality chocolate sauce

A LONG MARCH TO FREEDOM

F

or Mr Dali Tambo, son of Oliver Tambo, CEO of the National Heritage Project NPC and originator of the National Heritage Monument, the Long March to Freedom Exhibition holds much more than almost 100 bronzes and an estimated value of R100 Million. It holds history. It holds sentiment. And love. Love for his parents, Oliver and Adelaide Tambo, but also love for a country he clearly holds dear.

28

Mr Dali Tambo has devoted seven years to seeking funding and support for this project and exhibition that will remain at Maropeng for a period of six months having started in January 2019. The exhibition was previously located at the Fountains Valley Resort in the City of Tshwane and attracted hundreds of visitors there. Now located at a world heritage site, the National Lottery funded statues might even draw more attention. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site boasts over 400 tourism offerings and Maropeng and Sterkfontein are receiving over 30 000 visitors per year. It seems to be the perfect fit for the Long March to Freedom Exhibition, teaching Hello Pretoria • April 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

South African learners and students, as well as local and international tourists more about South Africa’s heritage. Mr Dali Tambo is currently busy working on a documentary about Oliver Tambo and in working on it, he says he has once again realised that his parents’ story is one of love and revolution. Their story formed part of a bigger one – a story of a country which saw its people turn at the very brink of catastrophe to forge a new future for its people by shaping a Constitution where the rights of every individual are protected and defended. South Africa has experienced the ravages of slavery, colonialism and apartheid. With the exhibition, Maropeng seeks to tell the story of human frailty and human survival, in all its complexity and depth. Here, people can reflect on where we have come from, but also consider where we currently are and contemplate our future. The exhibition is an ode to the veterans of

the struggle who fought against Apartheid. It represents the journey of South African people like Oliver and Adelaide Tambo and Nelson and Winnie Madikizela Mandela, who fought for freedom and democracy. The struggle was not isolated; it relied on numerous contacts and connections from around the world, which is why the exhibition also reflects the inter-connected nature of the human spirit. It represents the unquenchable human desire to be free and it showcases the struggle of individuals against the backdrop of a collective narrative which fought tirelessly against oppression. It tells the South African story of oppression to freedom; degradation to respect; enslavement to liberation. It speaks of a future filled with hope. Winnie Madikizela Mandela and Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jnr’s bronze statues were recently unveiled at the site – be sure to make a day of it and take time to walk through these magnificent art pieces. You’ll be surprised at the emotions they provoke – the biggest of them all: Love for our country. 1 www.maropeng.co.za

Abu Dhabi (8h00 – 17h00) Abu Dhabi is the world’s richest city and even though nine hours doesn’t seem like much time to explore, you will still be able to see a lot. Sip Arabic coffee at one of the Emirates’ oldest souks and feel the rush of the world’s fastest rollercoaster, the Formula Rossa, at Ferrari World with a top speed of 240 km per hour. The 5000-year-old city is a fascinating mix of modern architecture and backstreets. Get your Abu Dhabi chocolate fix at Forrey & Galland at the Abu Dhabi Mall. Their chocolates are all handmade with Arabian-inspired flavours. A signature treat is definitely their rose truffle. Fujairah (9h00 – 18h00) This city lies along the Gulf of Oman and is known for its beaches, the Hajar Mountains and its Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Browse its souks for carpets and pottery and try out local delicacies like salt-crusted hammour fish. It’s

silver jewellery, exotic spices and handicrafts. Get your Muscat chocolate fix at The Chocolate Room in the Mirbat Tower in Marafah Street. Seychelles (Monday, 12h00– Tuesday 18h00) The stopover in the Seychelles is a bit longer, so you’ll be able to spend more time exploring. Be sure to spend some time on Beau Vallon Beach and stop by at the Selwyn-Clarke Market for some street shopping. By this time, you should probably take a break from chocolate. But, you can still try to visit the Aride Island where Cadbury’s Christopher Cadbury established a nature reserve. This reserve has more bird species than all the other islands put together. There are full day tour options available from Mahe. Madagascar (7h00 – 15h00) From Ylang Ylang trees to lemurs and chameleons in the Lokobe Reserve, your time at Nosy Be will definitely be well spent. You can also brave the highest peak on the island, Mont Lokobe, or just lay back and relax on the beaches of Befotaka Bay. Look for the Golden Bean Award winners, Chocolat Madagascar – the finest origin chocolate that is produced locally. Their roasted cocoa beans enrobed in dark chocolate is a must-try. Mauritius (10h00 – 21h00) Lose yourself in Port Louis. The Mauritian capital was named after a French emperor and was a major passage point for ships sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. The Champs de Mars race track is definitely something to see; so is the Blue Penny Museum. Get your hands on some Van Ann chocolates. These are made by Belgian, Ann van den Bergh, who resides in Mauritius. It’s like they say:You can take the chocolate out of Belgium, but you can’t take Belgium out of Ann van den Bergh. Reunion (7h00 – 16h00) This island is known for its volcanic interior and rainforests, as well as its coral reefs and beaches. Pointe des Galets will most certainly have you in awe of its natural splendour.

Hike through the Bélouve Forest or relax on l’Hermitage beach. If you’re looking for local chocolates, be sure to keep an eye out for Mascarin Chocolates. Try their original range, which is filled with Reunion Island fruit. Richard’s Bay (9h00– 23h00) Did you know that Richard’s Bay has the deepest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere? Use the day and catch some waves or visit the Umlalazi Nature Reserve where you might spot the rare Palm-Nut Vulture. Port Elizabeth (7h00 – 20h00) Relax on the friendly city’s King Beach and explore the Eastern Cape’s history at the Donkin Reserve. You can also head out to Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve and spot the big five. Try Ganache Patisserie & Chocolatier’s chocolates at Baywest Mall if you still have not had enough. Mossel Bay (8h00 – 16h00) The last stop before disembarkation is Mossel Bay. The Cape St. Blaize lighthouse is a must see and it offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The Bartolomeu Diaz Museum should also give you some insight into the recent cultural heritage of South Africa. Hop on over to La Chocolaterie Rococo in Great Brak River, just a short drive from Mossel Bay, for the last bit of chocolate before your trip ends. If you’ve finally had enough chocolate then buy some souvenirs. Cape Town (Disembark at 7h00) Be sure to still spend some time in Cape Town after disembarkation and if you’re up for it, visit the Honest Chocolate Café in Wale Street. If the weather allows, head up Table Mountain for some spectacular views. Some wine tasting should also be in order.

There you go – half the world with chocolate in 20 days! You’re welcome

Lilly Pulitzer once said that she believed colour affected people’s moods. We definitely agree, which is why we are so happy that the colour of the year is warm and welcoming.

Here is how we think you can incorporate this new colour trend into your space: Pops of Coral Add a dash of coral to your living space with a textured throw at the end of a couch or bed or add some scatter cushions with a patterned print. Incorporating small bits and pieces of the colour is a great way to stay on trend without having to break the bank. Break the bland in your bathroom with some coral

towels or bring the colour into your living room by adding some interesting artwork. Accessorise Bring the Living Coral colour into your home with accessories. Go to a second-hand bookstore and pick all the books with covers in that colour. Books always make a home feel warm and welcoming (and you can actually read them as an added bonus). Buy some coral coloured serviettes for dinner – a small expense for a lovely evening. Another option is to buy a coral coloured runner for the dinner table. You can also consider painting some of your photo frames in Living Coral to add some colour to the walls. Coral Cupboards Paint some statement furniture with the colour of the year and make a bold statement in that way. All you need is a mini makeover, which will surely be the talking point when guests come to visit. Or, go all out with a proper feature wall. Break the colour with an eclectic arrangement of home décor items like a vintage couch, oriental carpets, wall art and patterned accessories, which will give character to the room. Or, go big and paint your front door with the colour of the

year. If that doesn’t make a statement, nothing will. Contrast The colour of the year is vibrant and bright, which means you need to bring in some contrast to break it. Using it as a contrasting colour to dark colours like navy tiles, walls or interiors will really let it pop. Let the colour stand out by adding accents and accessories in metallic hues. You’ll be surprised to see how it lets the golden undertone of Living Coral shine through. Bathroom basics Bathrooms are often neglected spaces when it comes to colour. Why not add a dash of colour to your guest bathroom? Choose a quirky coral themed wallpaper that will really bring the space to life and add some accessories and décor items in the same hues or in contrasting colours. A pot plant or two for the final touch and you’re definitely on trend.

antone dubbed Living Coral as the colour of the year for 2019. They describe Living Coral as an “animating and affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone”. We wouldn’t know the first thing about describing the colour, but what we do know it that it is inviting and inspiring and that it will definitely liven up your home.

FRANCOIS van Coke

He is one of South Africa’s top Afrikaans musicians and he writes songs that are raw, true and meaningful. He’s a rock icon and pioneer. Q @francoisvancoke D @FrancoisVanCoke E Francois van Coke

Francois van Coke is definitely not one for sitting around and doing nothing. In fact, he seems to have his fingers in many pies and we like those pies! Even though he launched his solo career in 2015 (with a ballad called ‘Toe vind ek jou’ featuring Karen Zoid), his friends from F*kofpolisiekar stayed like brothers and this allowed for him to open the bar he has always dreamed of. Together with his friends from F*kofpolisiekar, Francois van Coke opened a bar inevitably called F*kof Bar, and according to him, it’s the coolest place to hang out at. He is also religiously writing and recording new music for a full-length album release due this year and he acts as a coach on the latest season of the reality TV show, The Voice. We gave Francois van Coke a couple of sentences to complete and here is what he had to say for himself:

Pretoria because the previous one in Pretoria was the highlight of my career and I can’t wait to do it there again.

Owning a bar is something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Great to do it with my best mates and I hope people from around the country will come and hang out in Pretoria.

The Voice SA is a wonderful experience. I get to meet and work with people that I never would have if it wasn’t for the show.

One day, while sitting in a bar I thought I owned the place. It wasn’t mine, it was Perseverance Tavern in Cape Town. The oldest bar in the country. Bars and music are lekker man. I wrote a song today, ’cause I am working on a new album. Two of my favourite things are braai and rugby. Very South African. Pretoria is my favourite place to perform. The F*kof Bar is the coolest hangout in town. My upcoming album is going to be the best thing that I have done. It is going to be rocking and genre-bending. Francois van Coke & Vriende will be in

The popular Francois van Coke & Vriende, which sold out at the Sun Arena in September last year, will be back in Pretoria again later this year, after performing in Cape Town on the 3rd of May. The show is a way of celebrating his legacy as rock icon and innovator in the South African music industry and with that comes 120 minutes of spectacular music. Francois van Coke & Vriende showcases collaborations with various artists with whom he has crafted some of the most memorable and nostalgic South African songs. He will be performing with his band, Die Gevaar and friends for his Cape Town show including Jack Parow, Majozi, F*kofpolisiekar, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Laudo Liebenberg, Coenie de Villiers, Early B, Arno Carstens, Van Coke Kartel and Riana Nel.
