T-SHIRTS FOR

Change

FASHION FOR A GOOD CAUSE Give back in style this Women’s Month!

S

o how did this initiative come about? The business evolved from a once-off fund raising initiative started by owner, Nicole, when women’s rights were in the forefront of media. She wanted a t-shirt that said ‘FEMINIST’ both as a fashion statement and as a way of expressing her alignment and advocacy of women’s rights issues. When she couldn't find the t-shirt she wanted, she researched what it would cost to have one made. She found that having 10 made would be far more economical and so the idea came to her to make 10 and sell the other 9 and donate whatever money was made to a women’s shelter. The demand for the t-shirts kept growing and in just over a month, R10 000 was raised for Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter. Due to the popularity of the concept and t-shirts, Nicole kept selling

6

them and has since added many more designs and charity beneficiaries to the project. She has also just opened an online store in Botswana. Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter was the first beneficiary for the project and was chosen because they are one of the only shelters’ in South Africa that accepts women and their children aged under ten. This means that families don’t get broken up and lost in the system. The women and children at Frida Hartley receive accommodation, three meals a day, counselling, get placed in local schools and women get career counselling and skills training. Since then Dress For Success Cape Town has been added as a beneficiary, as well as an animal charity, and education charity. The newest T-Shirts For Change initiative in collaboration with Yummy Maternity is raising funds and awareness for Philani Maternal, Child Health and Nutrition Trust who provide mums to be and children in need with mentoring, health support and HIV support. Apart from the obvious reason of donating to charity, another reason

why we are such fans of T-shirts For Change is the fact that each time you post to social media wearing your new t-shirt and other apparel, not only are you making a monetary contribution to the cause you care about, but you are also helping to start a conversation about important issues like women’s rights in a new and engaging way.

Go on, strike a pose in your new tee while helping others out and contributing to important conversations.

Waterkloof

HEALTHY AND RICH

Home to some of Pretoria’s most expensive real estate, Waterkloof is a well-known suburb of the Jacaranda City, named after the original farm that was situated in the area when Pretoria was founded.

Johann Mentz came to study in Pretoria and never left. He has been living in the Jacaranda City for 12 years and says it’s the climate, the people, the Jacarandas and the opportunities that keep him here.

eing an elevated region of Pretoria, it boasts a couple of impressive hilltop homes from which the Union Buildings are visible. It also flaunts one of the city’s most impressive golf courses, The Pretoria Country Club. They offer superb dining options at their on-site Blu Saffron Restaurant and they also lend out their lovely classic facilities as a wedding venue. It currently has four dining rooms, two lounges, a bar and a main dining area, as well as an outside patio overlooking the first tee of the golf course. Just across from the golf course, The Club Centre, stands proud, offering a variety of restaurants, shops and even a medical centre. 1 www.ptacc.co.za 1 www.theclubcentre.co.za Milner Street in Pretoria has become known for its quirky restaurants and Meet on Milner is just that. A spot with trendy, inviting décor that emphasises homegrown organic produce. They also occasionally host unique street fair markets that bring the neighbourhood together with live music, great food and sangria. Also worth a mention is The Three Ducks , an absolute French affair. 1 www.thethreeducks.com With Pretoria offering a wide variety of parks and with the Groenkloof Nature Reserve just around the corner from Waterkloof, it’s only natural that there’s also a few establishments that cater for active cyclists and runners from the

neighbourhood. Waterkloof Heights Shopping Centre has an exciting new coffee shop opening this month and the well-known Urban Barista will be partnering with Corner Shop to provide a proper post-exercise fix for cyclists and Vespa clubs. 1 www.urbanbarista.co.za Priva Gastrolounge is a restaurant with one of the best views in town. It is a multi-award winning fine-dining restaurant that features a cigar lounge as well as a champagne and oyster bar. A must-visit! 1 www.urbanbarista.co.za 1 www.privalounge.com

To him, the special thing about Pretoria is the fact that people living in it can be so different, yet everyone feels like they belong. “If you sit in a restaurant and look around, you’ll notice a neatly suited businessman working at one table, two students on a first date at the next and at another table you’ll see two older women who have been chatting over a pot of tea for hours and no one feels out of place.” he says. For an out of towner, he would recommend the big five attractions of Pretoria: The Union Buildings, the Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, Church Square and the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History.

Waterkloof Corner is a popular shopping centre in the neighbourhood, offering the most necessary everyday shops, but also some well-known brands like Follicle Hair Atelier and Tammy Tailor. The Corner is also home to The Village Pantry, a weekday alternative to the Saturday Boeremark, with small-scale farmers offering fresh, organic produce. 1 www.waterkloofcorner.com

Johann’s weekends entail sleeping late, trying out new and traditional cuisines at local markets, catching up with friends and hiking or cycling in one of the city’s parks. He enjoys brunch at Blos Café and dinner isn’t complete without a steak at Hillside Tavern. He buys coffee from a South African and Brazilian couple’s shop, Vintage Coffee, which supports a different non-profit organisation each month.

In retrospect, Waterkloof is the healthy-living neighbourhood of Pretoria with loads of healthrelated options to choose from.

If he could choose an area in the city to call home, it would be any place in the old East where there are Jacarandas in the streets, limited traffic and excellent services. Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

t n a r u a t s e R THE MONTH OF

“Smaak” it! Many have fallen in love with Smaak since discovering their lamb pitas at one of Pretoria’s local markets. Others have identified it as their go-to lunch spot at Pretoria’s restaurant hotspot, The Village.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Supplied, Renate Engelbrecht

T

he Afrikaans word, Smaak, means so many good things. It’s used to describe someone with good taste. Its used when referring to the taste of a delicious meal and it is also often used as a verb when professing your love for something amazing. After experiencing this unique restaurant and tasting their famous lamb pita, there is no better way of putting it other than I “Smaak” it! Dylan Maré, one of the owners, explains that Smaak is owned by himself, his wife and his sister and that his brother, who named the restaurant, acts as manager. Smaak has come a long way since opening with The Village three years ago and has stood the test of time. “The people like it,” says Dylan when asked about being situated at The Village. “It’s an outside area, something that Pretoria doesn’t really have. It feels a bit like Stellenbosch or Europe, you know? On the street; you don’t get parking - just like in Cape Town.” He also explains that the food is quick and easy.

From pies that are freshly baked on the premises daily, filled with spitbraai lamb, brisket or pulled pork to their ever-popular lamb pitas, Smaak’s street style food excites any regular or newcomer’s taste buds. Their lamb pitas are undoubtedly the most popular item on the menu, which originally started off as a sideline product to their spitbraai offering at local markets. Today every Pretoria local will recommend lamb pitas at Smaak as a must-try when visiting the Jacaranda City. A close second on the menu is The Pig’s Dream, described as an Americanised dish by Smaak’s owner. Dylan built the restaurant’s tables and chairs, which are a unique feature to the eatery. Smaak also boasts lovely artwork from upcoming and unknown artists on one of their dark painted walls. Each month offers a new array of artworks which customers can browse through and buy. In addition to their tasteful meals, Smaak also lures customers through with their interesting

and fun events. On Tuesday evenings they host an event called Cards Against Humanity, where customers get to practice their sarcasm among likeminded peeps, with the crowd often being quite young and hip. A game master provides cards with sentences that are missing a word, which you complete from your dealt cards that often result in quite inappropriate, dark and twisted or just very funny statements. On Thursday evenings they host a music and poetry evening, with Spoken Sessions hosting the event and live bands performing.

No time for a sit-down lunch? Visit Smaak at local markets like the Hazel Food Market or The Stall. Firwood Ave & 16th St, Hazelwood m 012 346 0342 1 www.smaakbydough.com Q @smaakbydough Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

It’s a Sunday morning, the weather is starting to get warmer as we head into spring and you might be wondering what you should do for the day? How about heading to Holland and France while staying in South Africa?

H

artbeespoort, also known as "Harties", is a small resort town in the North West Province of South Africa. It’s situated on slopes of the Magaliesburg Mountains and the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam and is a popular day trip for visitors from Gauteng. While there is so much to get up to in Hartbeespoort, we highly recommend making your way to The Windmill first. Situated in a little centre that surrounds the actual windmill, you can pop over for a delicious Dutch styled brunch. After your delicious meal, take a walk around the centre and browse the delightful farm stall market where you’ll find fresh high quality produce. Plus, we love supporting our local farmers. 1 Jan Smuts Drive, Meerhof, Hartbeespoort

After your stroll, take a short drive to The French Toast Coffee Café. It’s as if you’ve stepped out of your car and into a mini Paris. With elements such as the 12.5m Eiffel Tower; the ‘I love you wall’ and even a lock bridge, it’s such a quaint and sweet way to spend your day. And we haven’t even mentioned the delicious food yet. We recommend the Hot Dog Deluxe which is a German roll filled with a bacon wrapped cheese griller.

and dusted with icing sugar. It’s the perfect way to end off your day, with a glass of rosé in your hand as well of course.

Whatever you choose to do, you have endless options for a day trip to Hartbeespoort filled with different adventures.

Named after the famous Voortrekker, Andries Pretorius, who lead the victory over Dingane and the Zulus in the Battle of Blood River, the Jacaranda City has an impressive cultural history. It is therefore not a bad idea to dig deeper into what made the city what it is today.

n a trip to the CBD of Pretoria, you will be taken back a couple of years, with notable historic buildings attracting one’s eye. Visiting Paul Kruger’s presidential residence, the Kruger House, which now features as a museum illustrating international admiration for the president of the old Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) and the struggle for freedom from British imperialism, brings things into perspective. Another museum not to miss out on is the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History, previously known as the Transvaal Museum, where you’ll find the world-famous scull, Mrs Ples. 1 www.ditsong.org.za Church Square is also a must, especially if you are fond of 19th and early 20thcentury architecture. The square was the site of Pretoria’s very first church, which Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

was built in 1855. It is encircled by historical buildings, including the Palace of Justice, the Old Capitol Theatre, the Ou Raadsaal (Old Government Building) and the old Nederlandsche Bank building which was erected in 1910. The Palace of Justice is where the late President Nelson Mandela was tried and charged for treason during the Rivonia trial. The ideal spot to take in so much history is from the terrace of the art nouveau styled bistro, Café Riche. It is the oldest of its kind in Pretoria and also a definite must for your itinerary. 1 www.gauteng.net/attractions/church_ square/ The Voortrekker Monument is one of Pretoria’s biggest landmarks, commemorating the Pioneer history of Southern Africa, as well as the Afrikaner’s history. The impressive monument, designed by Gerard Moerdijk, is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng. It is also the only grade one heritage site in Pretoria. The monument is situated in a nature reserve with Burchell’s zebra and numerous antelope roaming the reserve. A fun activity to include in your visit to this majestic structure is horse-riding. There are not many better ways to explore the

Voortrekker Monument Nature Reserve than from the saddle. From there you’ll be able to enjoy views over Pretoria, the monument, Fort Schanskop and Freedom Park. 1 www.vtm.org.za One must also not forget the more recent past. The Union Buildings form a very important part of Pretoria’s history and were the site of the inauguration of South Africa’s very first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela. A nine-metre bronze statue of Mandela was unveiled at the buildings the day after his funeral in 2013, acting as another drawing card for tourists and locals alike. 1 www.thepresidency.gov.za

MAURITIUS

Why an all-inclusive holiday should be at the top of your bucket list. OUR TOP PICK: Cloud Nine- Club MedLa Plantation d’Albion, Mauritius 1 www.clubmed.co.za

I

f you have a hankering for wanderlust, we have just the location.

In this archipelago lies a pristine slice of heaven. This is the ultimate island destination that flaunts untamed beauty from every angle. You’ll explore a land of raging sunsets on a voyage along the Indian Ocean.

28

We were recently invited to the luxurious Club Med Albion resort for a week and found out exactly how to maximize our time in this tropical paradise. This 21-hectare resort consists of vast white coral sands as well as cascading palm trees and is an all-inclusive luxury. You’ll be dazzled upon arrival and greeted with a space that’s furnished with treasures boasting a traditional Creole look and feel. This resort is an intermingling of authentic charm and contemporary elegance. Oh, and did we mention its all-inclusive?

So, what exactly does this mean? Allow us to break it down for you. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as all water and land activities, accommodation, staff tips and most importantly all drinks are included in the price. The only thing you’ll pay extra for is a golf excursion if you want to get rid of your spouse for a few hours, oh and your hedonistic experience at the exclusive Club Med Spa by CINQ MONDES Paris, which is begging to be enjoyed. They even offer transfers to a professional 18-hole golf course, just one-hour away from the resort. It’s a no-brainer. And remember at the end of your stay once you check out, there will be no extra costs. You’ll soon realise you would have paid a great deal more for this all-inclusive trip, so it’s easy to see the value. Another great advantage is that South Africans won’t be affected by the fluctuating rand-dollar exchange with no extras and no hidden costs. So now that we’ve convinced you, allow us to emphasize some of our highlights. Mauritius has panache and so does its people. Don’t worry about milling around with the masses because the resort has two separate experiences. On

Across the landscaped vistas, perched above the ocean, overlooking an expansive Mauritian mural is the Zen Zone. Zero wailing broods, no repetitive questions and no sticky limbs. Rather there is the Phare, a fine dining restaurant that’s overlooking the ocean, as well as the Club Med Spa. So, whether you’re lusting after a romantic getaway for two or a family vacation, they’ve got it pegged. The gastronomic experience is bountiful and changes on a daily basis. Expect cuisine from all over the world created with style. Succulent, melt in the mouth emperor fish dishes, Creole curries showcasing local ingredients, the juiciest coconut and the freshest seafood and impressive pizzas too. Before dinner do opt for a sundowner at one of the three spectacular bar areas. We loved the beach bar and the impressive Banian bar, which serves bubbles from 6 pm! Be whisked off, another world awaits.

A ROYAL RETREAT

IN PLETTENBERG BAY If the walls of this homestead that dates back to 1885 could talk, you’d never get to sleep – you’d be too enthralled by the rich history and old-world opulence that surrounds you. As much as we love gawking at Gauteng's ultramodern boutique hotels and dazzling luxury properties, sometimes we just want to escape the concrete jungle for a minute and stay in a storied residence with a historic restaurant to match. After a weekend stay at Kurland Hotel in Plettenberg Bay, we can safely say that this unhurried, unassuming jewel is just the place.

W

hile there are many amazing things to do and see in Pretoria, sometimes our flooded metropolis can be overwhelming, leaving us feeling restless and in need of a city break. Can you relate? We thought so! That’s why we’re excited to share our discovery of a luxe hotel that turns out to be a crowned gem along the Garden Route with you. But before we get started, allow us to clear something up...

30

Of all the places along the Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay has a reputation as the land reserved for the rich and pretentious – but Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

this doesn’t mean that the ritzy town is all about popped-collars and fancy cars. Otherwise Plett, as its widely known, wouldn’t also be home to Kurland Hotel, a five-star property that marries old-school elegance with modern sophistication. Offering the best of both worlds – the tranquil countryside and breath-taking beaches – it’s the perfect place for an exclusive hideaway. We arrived at Kurland Hotel on a Friday afternoon after a short twohour flight to Geroge followed by a one-and-a-half-hour drive (the drive is so scenic that it flies by – you’ll actually wish it was longer!) to the hotel. The warm and welcoming general manager, Diana, was waiting outside for us and quickly organised for the concierge to take our luggage from the car to our suite, nestled on the property’s fragrant rose garden. Upon stepping into the elegant and expansive two-bedroom, two-bathroom, suite, we were instantly taken aback. While each one of the 12 suites on the 700-hectare private estate have been individually appointed and tastefully decorated, the Rose Garden 1 abode is a showstopper of note. Dressed in neutral colour palettes and immaculate upholstery, it boasts vaulted ceilings, a wooden bookshelf chockfull of old books, an open wood-burning fireplace and chandeliers dripping with lamps.

travel

The old-school influence is reflected in the Egyptian cotton bedspreads and well-worn vintage furniture like velvet club chairs, which is complemented by modern palate-pleasing pieces of furniture and contemporary art. The lavish vibe extends to the sumptuous main bathroom, which has an extra-long bathtub, fluffy bathrobes and is generously stocked with bath products. Other features of the suite include a mini bar, ceiling fans, heated towel rails, a flat-screen TV and free WiFi. From the private patio, you can take in mesmerising views of the surrounding mountains – all while being afforded utter privacy. You’ll completely forget that you’re just a short drive away from the busy beach resorts of Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley.

Words Candice May Images Supplied

After unpacking our bags, we headed to the sunny patio that overlooks the sparkling swimming pool at the hotel’s restaurant to enjoy a welcome drink. Whatever your drink of choice is – a refreshing gin and tonic, a whiskey on the rocks or a glass of bubbly – the fully-stocked bar has got you. Just before sunset, we took a stroll around the property to explore the flora and fauna on the estate and were quite amazed by all of the indigenous plants, shrubs and trees that are found in the area. Then back to the restaurant it was to tuck into a three-course dinner. The award-winning Kurland Restaurant serves candlelit seclusion and a straightforward yet decadent menu at dinnertime – think dishes like a twice-baked cheese soufflé, mint green pea and lamb risotto, and baked dark chocolate fondant. Each plate reflects an emphasis on fresh, organic herbs and vegetables grown on the property. The wine list is just as impressive, offering a wide variety of local and imported bottles. What’s more, the service was simply faultless – highly attentive without being obtrusive. After wining and dining at Kurland Restaurant, it was easy to understand why it routinely makes lists of the most romantic restaurants not only on the Garden Route but in the country. After a good night’s sleep, we were ready for a full day of R&R. Inbetween a dreamy champagne brunch and cosy afternoon tea at Kurland Restaurant, we enjoyed the estate at our leisure. There’s so much to

do, from activities like horse riding and quad biking to pampering yourself in the recently renovated spa that has a steam room, sauna, therapy rooms and a gym. If you’re really looking to unwind, feel free to just spend your time soaking up some sun at the pool or curled up with a good book in front of the fire in the lounge instead. It’s all up to you – and the staff won’t judge. In fact, the best thing about Kurland Hotel is that time is of no consequence, so guests set their own pace and the staff make sure that they’re comfortable and relaxed from check-in to check-out. Our Saturday ended with another top-notch dinner at Kurland Restaurant. Before checking out on Sunday morning, we decided to indulge in one last meal – but this time from the comfort of our room. At Kurland Hotel, you can choose to have any meal of the day delivered by the restaurant right to your doorstep if you don’t feel like dressing up and going out. We figured there’d be no better way to end the weekend than with a breakfast of foamy cappuccinos, freshly baked croissants and the most moreish eggs benedict ever in bed – and, boy, were we right. What a treat! N2, Kurland, The Crags, Plettenberg Bay

For the kids of today, attending a trade show or family fun day may not seem like the in thing to do, let alone be seen at. But the conferencing and event industry in Pretoria has certainly upped its game when it comes to attracting younger crowds. From free WIFI and gin bars to the right celebs, knowing what your audience wants and giving it to them will go a long way in getting the Superga wearing peeps through the door.

#2 Keep things cool If you want the cool kids to come to your event then make it cool. South Africans are aspirational and like to be on the pulse of what’s hip and happening. From the décor to the food to the entertainment, keeping your event on trend or “lit” as the kids are saying these days is pertinent when it Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

comes to talk-ability and buzz. Whether it’s a Martini bar, an extensive gluten-free menu or the hottest new local muso for entertainment, plugging into the signs of the times will go a long way in keeping those feet rushing through your doors. #3 Use state-of-the-art technology If it’s not automated is it even real? With machine learning and augmented reality fast becoming the order of the day, the latest technologies and innovations will up your cool factor tenfold. And one technical hiccup could detail your entire event. From the basics of strong WIFI to bots taking orders and serving lunch to some gamification for event goers – with prizes, of course, technology really can give your event the X factor it’s been missing. #4 Keep it trending As the old adage goes, it’s not what you

know but who you know. A social media strategy for your event is as important as catering for vegetarians (be wary the veggie scorned). Social media plays a big part when it comes to the court of public opinion and deciding what is or isn’t cool. By inviting or partnering with celebrities and influencers with large followings, the chance of your event being promoted to the right people is greater. Also, it’s cool to trend #justsaying. #5 Make it an immersive experience The human attention span seems to be getting shorter from one generation to the next so you need to keep people engaged. Let event goers touch, feel and explore at your event. They want to be a part of the action. Whether its massages on site at a health convention, live cooking challenges for the crowd or gin tasting, get the crowd excited and talking with unforgettable experiences.

Words Carly Ritz

#1 Get the basics right – duh Millennials and Gen Z are notoriously judgmental and unforgiving when it comes to the basics. Your gran may not have complained too much about driving around looking for parking for 10 minutes but a 30 something will take to social media the minute he/she can’t find parking right near the entrance at the venue. From the parking and ablution facilities (dirty toilets could start a riot), make sure that the venue you chose for your event has the hygiene factor sorted.

when in Joburg

For those who consider Joburg as nothing more than the province of better salaries and traffic congestion, we invite you to pocket your misinformed judgement for a moment and hear us out.

here really is a pace and a pulse to Joburg that you don’t get anywhere else in the country. You just need to know where to go. So when in Joburg this month, suspend your disbelief and try some new things. Here’s a couple of things to consider.

cosy little speakeasy hiding there with wicked cocktails to write home about.

Fourways for something to eat. Bounce in Fourways is super central so you don’t need to go too far either.

For more of a day chill, hit Maboneng or Braam.

If you’re looking for that mid-week or weekend buzz on a trendy Jozi street corner then Parktown North is worth a visit. There are a ton of places to go, but this month we’re hitting on La Boqueria and its Hispanic inspired menu. After some good grub and drinks, there’s no reason to head home just yet so why not take the party out - via Uber of course – to one of the new spots peppering the Bolton corner in Rosebank. There’s a

The Living Room is also a firm favourite with some stunning views of Jozi.

We love technology and just can’t get enough of Blue Ocean VR in Bedfordview which has everything from 3D art classes and state of the art gaming to cool educational experiences.

Jozi is also a great place to entertain kids with the likes of the Bounce in Fourways, the indoor trampoline park that will entertain your kids and most likely you for hours on end. Get acquainted with the free jump area, some dodgeball and wall tramps. When you’ve worked up an appetite, venture around

We also have some killer cultural affairs on offer in Johannesburg that are, in our opinion, unrivalled. Why not find out about the history of beer or learn a bit more about art at one of the longest standing international contemporary art galleries in Gauteng? And that’s just for this month. Stay tuned for more things to do when in Jozi. Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Dr Christa NORTH

How do you feel about being involved in the first genetics testing laboratory in Pretoria? A dream come true!  It's not a job - it's an adventure - I learn new things about DNA daily and I can truly help people to improve their lives and health.   One piece of advice you would give to young girls interested in the medical field? If you can tick these boxes:  A sense of curiosity, good communications skills, technical or mathematic abilities, a strong work ethic and a great sense of commitment  - go for it - your career will be extremely rewarding! .   What do you consider to be your best find? 1. My husband! 2. From a DNA point of view - the MTHFR gene.  It can cause many health issues but is relatively easy and simple to 'solve'. 3. Shirataki Noodles made from the fibre Konjac-Glucomannan

Tell us about the importance of DNA testing? "Prevention is better than cure!"-  has never been truer than now! By knowing your DNA, you take the guesswork out of what is right for YOU. 'Epigenetics’ is the science that studies how your nutrition, environment and lifestyle switch genes ‘on’ and ‘off’ in your body. In other words, your DNA is not your destiny but rather, by making personalised epigenetic choices based on your genes, you can prevent many lifestyle-related chronic diseases and create optimal wellness.

You have 9 % DNA in common with a chimpanzee. Humans and cabbage share about 40-50% common DNA.

Three interesting facts about DNA that people may not know? If you put all the DNA molecules in your body end to end, the DNA would reach from the Earth to the Sun and back over 600 times!

One single gram of DNA is capable of holding an amazing 700 terabytes of data!  Hello Pretoria • August 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

What would be your first question after waking up from being cryogenically frozen for 100 years?  Did someone discover how to make chocolate that is kilojoule-free and tastes great? Where do you usually go when you when you have time off? Time off ?  What's that? It must be quiet and peaceful.  I almost never go to Shopping Malls. I love reading- usually John Grisham's books or other law-based 'stories'. I love to go painting at the Colour Cafe in Hyde Park. 1 www.colorcafe.co.za What do you spend the most time thinking about? Work - all the new and exciting things that are still to come! I have two amazing children - so they keep my thoughts going!

GENEWAY has opened a state of the art DNA genetics testing laboratory in Pretoria. The Geneway test is amazing! it can tell you so much about all the conditions you are genetically predisposed to, what you should eat /not eat, how long you need to sleep (your circadian rhythms), what meds you should take and much more. We spoke to Dr Christa North who runs the Geneway programme in SA to find out more.

When people come to you for help, what do they usually want help with? The biggest request for health is usually about cancer prevention. And of course, which type of weight loss diet is best based on genes, is asked - and always answered! .
