foreword

Who are you celebrating this Women’s Month and why?

SPINNERCOM

Hello Pretoria is published by Spinner Communications (Pty) Ltd. Established in 1980 Hellopretoria.co.za I’ll be celebrating with Spinnercom.com

my boy and the three beautiful women in his life. Great-gran, Gran and Mom!

Get to know Hello Pretoria Magazine editor,

Renate Engelbrecht,

in 10 Q&As as asked by Beauty and Lifestyle Editor, Bianca Q. What was the first thing you bought with your first pay cheque? A flight ticket to Cape Town. Travelling has always been one of my biggest passions. Q. If you could be any animal, what would you be? A giraffe. They are so elegant and they can run in slow motion! Q. Which store and mall would you like to max your credit card out at? Poetry at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre is definitely high up on this list! And then perhaps Pentravel at Brooklyn Mall. Two of my favourite things: Fashion and travel. Q. What’s the worst Pretoria restaurant you’ve ever been to? JulieBean Roastery and Coffee Café. Being a former mystery guest, I often sit and let things play out. Here I waited at least 45 minutes just to be offered a menu. I then had to wait to be offered something to drink. Service-wise, this was my worst restaurant experience in Pretoria. Q. What’s your number-one guilty foodie pleasure? Oh, definitely D.o.u.g.h Catering’s lamb pita at Hazel Food Market on a Saturday. Q. What’s the oldest thing in your refrigerator? A packet of Kalamata olives we just can’t seem to finish as I’m the only one in our family who eats olives. Q. Describe yourself in three words. Daydreamer. Booklover. Loyal. Q. If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be? Sewing. I’m so sad that I did not learn from my mom while I was still living under my parents’ roof. Q. Name three things still left on your bucket list. Viewing the Northern Lights in Lapland. Seeing Andre Rieu in Maastricht with my family. Writing and publishing an Afrikaans novel and having a movie made from it. Q. You’re running late for the weekly editorial meeting. Do you: A) Turn up the music and dance, B) grab a coffee on the way or C) be lame and message your boss to let him know? I’ve always been the conscientious one. I guess being lame is my strong suit. While phoning my boss, I would be wishing I could grab that cup of coffee on the way, though! We mistakenly credited two items incorrectly in our July issue’s décor section. If you’re looking for some Nordic Nuance inspo, have a look at Mobelli Furniture’s décor items, including their Babylon Credenza (which was incorrectly credited as Weylandts’ Tuareg Bookcase) and their Linear Lined Vase (incorrectly credited as @Home’s blue organic blown glass vase).

ANGELIQUE GERBER Let it Grow

Angelique Gerber’s heart burns with an unstoppable passion for women and children. For her, being a woman is to let the sun shine on others, to let that green monster go and to always keep growing.

W

hen her first born was six months old, she found out that she was pregnant with twins. “It won’t help to lie – it’s rough. It’s hard work.” Still, she can’t imagine her life without Annabella, Olivia and Jacques Junior. As a woman, just the fact that she was able to get pregnant is very special for her. “I know how many women out there yearn to have a child of their own. It’s just the biggest blessing that I could have healthy pregnancies and healthy children. It humbles me.” The fact that she is very strict makes her as a woman very special to her husband too. “And the fact that I keep a tight rein on him,” she laughs. “He says all the women he went out with before me were too soft and he could get away with murder. He loves that I keep him on his toes.”

6

Since her acting career kicked off in her second year of studying drama when she got cast for a role in 7de Laan, Angelique has only gone from strength to strength. 4 Years ago, her dream of studying at the New York Film Academy also came true and she studied Acting for Film for three months while missing her newly Hello Pretoria • August 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

found love terribly! Thank goodness for Facetime! Even though this year is supposed to be a sabbatical, she just got cast for an English drama series on Mzanzi. “It was literally the fastest I’ve ever been cast.” Still, having three kids within 14 months is no joke and she wants to be a hands-on mom. Like many women, she likes to be in control and with all three her kids still quite small she wants to be there for them. This goes to show that there is always room for women to grow and being a mom was one of Angelique’s biggest emotional growth spurts. According to the young actress, one thing women need to have more of is self-respect. “It is a difficult one. I grew up without my father and I also had to hit my head hard and there were times where I did not have self-respect, because indirectly you don’t love yourself. You need to love yourself first; you must have respect for yourself first before you can reach out and be in a relationship.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Shoot the Moon Photography Floral Dress: Pretty Jane. Navy Dress: Poetry. Boots: Poetry. Scarf: H&M.

I feel if you can’t have respect for yourself, you can’t have respect for anyone else. If you don’t love yourself, you can’t truly love someone else. It is a daily battle for me. I have to decide to choose myself first, because if I look after myself, I can look after my children and my husband. I just reached a point where I realised that I am a much better mom if I ensure that I am okay first. Then my kids are also okay, because they pick up when you are irritated or tired or when you just can’t cope anymore. You must make the decision to choose yourself daily and walk the road with God that He shows you who you are in Christ. That is my prayer for my twin girls – that they will always know who they are in Christ, because they are women and women tend to have a lower self-image than men.” Angelique says it is important for women to keep growing too. “The day we stop growing, we’re in trouble. It hurts to grow. I always say it is the parts that hurt, the sad parts, the lonely parts from which you learn and that make you grow. That’s why I feel I always need God, because it is in those situations that I really need someone who is bigger than the problem and who I believe is in control. That’s my view on life. I will struggle without God. It’s probably not the answer most people are looking for, but unfortunately the only way you’ll grow is when you challenge yourself, when you put yourself in situations where you think you can’t do it.” Vuurwarm vir Charity is hosting a golf day on 15 August at the Blue Valley Golf Estate in Centurion and Angelique is their guardian angel. The charity is mainly active in the Krugersdorp area, helping out at a small nursery school by providing them with the necessities like groceries, books and more. The ATKV affiliated Vuurwarm vir Charity hosts this annual golf day to raise funds for the next year to assist the school with whatever they might need. To buy your fourball, contact Anzelle on 082 958 7425 or info@ vuurwarmvircharity.co.za. A fourball costs R4000 and includes two golf carts, entry fees, gift packs, a halfway meal, the prize giving, entertainment and dinner. 1 www.vuurwarmvircharity.co.za

“For me, being a woman is to let the sun shine on everyone. There is more than enough out there for all of us. We must always guard ourselves against the green monster called Jealousy,” Angelique says. Hello Pretoria • August 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

GAUTRAIN TRAVELLING

Who to sit next to (or not) Train travel has been a mode of transport for centuries and many people use it to get from point A to point B. Some have mastered the art of where to sit (and where not to sit) on the Gautrain and we have done so recently too.

The Introvert Spot the introverts sooner than later and make your way to the seat next to them. Chances are that when some seats open up, they’ll move, and you’ll have 2 or 3 seats all to yourself. The Cautious If you keep losing stuff everywhere, sitting next to someone who is cautious might not be a bad idea. They usually check the area where they sat very thoroughly and might spot your dropped Gautrain card before you’ve left the train. The Talker If you’re a keen eve’s dropper, sitting next to someone who enjoys talking is the answer. We’ve heard many interesting conversations on the Gautrain before – from intellectual architectural discussions and lawyers battling it out over the phone to the latest gossip within large, corporate companies.

8

Hello Pretoria • August 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

The Mute We have also found the complete opposite on the train. Some people get onto the train, not even looking up to greet you. They usually have earphones on and completely ignore everyone around them. If you prefer some quiet me-time on the train (which is often the only me-time the day allows), spot the earphones and jump at the chance to sit next to them.

Skip seats next to: The Chatterbox There is a difference between intelligent conversation and chatting about the same topics over and over again. Having to listen to the same story from different angles thrice can be tiring. Rather sidestep these train travellers if you can. The Lovebirds Being the third wheel has never been fun. Nor has landing a seat next to two lovebirds who can’t keep their hands off each other. Spot them before you get on – you’ll notice

the lovey dovey, handholding, forehead kissing couples from afar. When you do – get in at another door! 1 www.gautrain.co.za Gautrain insights: • There are now additional 8-car trains during the morning and afternoon peak periods on the North-South line. • The first train on the North-South line departs from Hatfield at 05h05 on weekdays. • The afternoon peak period has been extended Northbound (from Park Station to Hatfield Station) and now commences at 14h38 on weekdays. • The first train departing from O.R. Tambo International Airport at 05h19 travelling towards Sandton now also stops at Rhodesfield and Marlboro. These two stations therefore have an earlier train departure on weekdays now. • Trains are now available every 20 minutes on weekends and public holidays between O.R. Tambo International Airport and Sandton.

CHARNÉ BOSMAN YES, I AM An icy wind was blowing when we met at Spout Coffee. She was warmly wrapped in sporty attire with shiny, silver sneakers and we luckily found a cosy spot next to a heater.

C

harné Bosman, sponsored by Murray & Roberts, just ran the Comrades and finished 8th. She is turning 44 this year and this was her 6th Comrades in which she won in her age group category. It is a dream of hers to pocket ten gold medals from the Comrades Marathon and it looks like she is reaching this goal rather quickly.

are as an individual and all the roles you play as a woman.

She is also an ambassador for the Spar Women’s Challenge Tshwane in which she was the winner of the inaugural race in 1997. She’s one of its longest-serving supporters, having missed only two races. Since then Bosman has grown into one of South Africa’s most recognisable ultra-distance runners and she says that through this she has learned to appreciate the meaning of the saying: Age is just a number. “I don’t view my age as a hindrance or something that should be overcome. My drive comes from within – I am an athlete and it is such a privilege to wake up each morning doing what I love best.”

“I want to tell women that nobody can take your dream away and that you must never let go of something so precious to you.”

This year’s Spar Women’s Challenge Tshwane goes hand in hand with what Charné believes in: Yes, I am. It is about embracing who you

Bosman personifies this year’s theme perfectly, overwriting the world’s perceptions of age and athletic performance. “I live my life on the premise that everything I want to achieve is within my reach,” she says.

She says that Yes, I am is not only a way of emphasising a person’s worth, but also to inspire women to claim their identity. “There is something great in all of us, but sometimes we must help others to discover it themselves.” On 3 August, Bosman will line up with 25 000 women from all walks of life and all fitness levels for the Spar Women’s Challenge Tshwane – 22 years after she won it. It should be a day to remember. 1 www.sparladiestshwane.co.za

Charné Bosman’s tips for runners: • Get yourself a proper pair of running shoes. Run-A-Way Sport in Lynnwood Road is very professional in guiding you to find the right shoes. • Don’t drink more than 2 glasses of alcohol per week. • Swop your fries for salad. • Choose grilled in stead of fried. • Say no to take-aways. • Start your running program on a Monday. It just makes it easier to go out the day after. • Drink 30ml water per kilogram you weigh per day and don’t drink less water in winter. International Airport and Sandton. SKIN PhD QUEENSWOOD Room for Relaxation

There is a brand-new Skin PhD in Queenswood and the dynamic duo and owners, Mariette and Carla Monteiro are clearly the epitome of entrepreneurs in the aesthetics industry.

Their passion for the industry came from a young age and included some bad decisions like a pixie cut and a bad perm. But, their experimenting bore fruit as they are successful business owners today, heading up a team of therapists and stylists and handling day-to-day operations. We can’t help but wonder if the pixie cut and bad perm did not form part of their learning curve considering that they often also need to do some damage control.

14

According to Mariette and Carla, one of the biggest challenges in the industry is to find the right staff. They need to fit the image that the business wants to portray to their clients and after our visit for a Retinol Surge Treatment, we are pretty sure that they’ve got their recruiting skills down! “This is a challenging industry, but if you find the correct staff, you’re halfway there. They can either make or break your business. Finding staff with the same passion for the industry is a winner! We have such an incredible team who we regard as family.” Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

The Retinol Skin Treatment is a 45-minute facial, which leaves your skin fresh and rejuvenated. During the treatment your skin is also examined, and you are given some feedback on how you can treat scars, blemishes, pimples or pores. Using a product called Retinol-Surge Skin Supplement, the treatment prevents premature ageing, stimulates cellular turnover and helps with cellular resurfacing. Besides treating visible signs of ageing, it also improves complexion and the product is suitable for all skin types and skin conditions, which makes this facial the perfect fit for a regular winter skincare option. The salon is light and welcoming, and visitors are treated to a cup of coffee (with a biscuit), which makes you feel right at home. Upon arrival it looks quite small but walking to the back there are numerous treatment rooms for all kinds of aesthetic treatments. When it comes to customer satisfaction, Mariette and Carla says that their clients are genuinely helped by their advice and expertise, whether it be skin advice or hair knowledge. Pop in at Skin PhD at Queenswood Quarter when you’re in the area. It’s sure worth it.

After it became a highly sought-after product, the founder of Sehnor Peri Peri decided to create a range of sauces and today these sauces make the recipes. MEANDERING ABOUT Pretoria’s Weekend Wind-down Options

J

ust under an hour’s drive from Pretoria, you get to relax, rewind and explore as if you were far, far away. If you need to get out this weekend, there are some really exciting activities to tap into right on your doorstep. No need for hours on the road or saving up for petrol. In fact, save that petrol money and spend it on a cruise on the Hartbeespoort Dam, a trip up the Aerial Cableway or some special pampering at the Cradle Health Spa.

Harties Harbour

Cruise along the Hartbeespoort Dam’s shoreline and explore all the hidden waterside estates with their luxurious waterfront homes. Join Harties Boat Company for their early Brunch Cruise between 10AM and 12PM, which includes a finger and fork breakfast with bubbly and orange juice and then use the rest of the day to explore Hartbeespoort. Perhaps a trip up the mountain with the Aerial Cableway might tickle your fancy? Harties Boat Company’s Lunch Cruise is also quite popular, including a morning stop at the Lion & Safari Park. This cruise includes a finger and fork buffet lunch with gourmet food and a bar. The Sunset Cruise – between 4PM and 6PM – often turns into a more festive cruise with Cap Classique, canapes and gourmet finger foods. On this cruise it is all sing and dance as the sun sets behind the mountains. There is just something magical about cruising about with the Magalies Mountain range majestically wrapped around you. Situated in Harties Harbour, Harties Boat Company gives its passengers the opportunity to really make a day of it. Whether you come early or leave late, passengers get to enjoy all that the resort has to offer, including braai facilities, picnic spots, swimming pools, water sports, fishing opportunities and mountain bike trails within a safe nature reserve. The area also boasts numerous 4 and 5-star accommodation options.

Aerial Cableway

Cloud number 9 gets a whole new meaning with Harties’ Aerial Cableway giving you a bird’s eye view across the Hartbeespoort Dam and beyond.

Recent visitors have labelled the Aerial Cableway as an exhilarating experience with magnificent views. In addition to the cableway, it boasts a child-friendly KidZone play area, a couple of restaurant options and top and bottom curio shops – the ideal day out if you want (or need) to impress. From a self-service express restaurant, Pizza Hut and ice cream outlet at the top, to the Lookout Bar and Hero’s Cableway Grillhouse and Pizzeria at the bottom, you’re sure to find something to fill those empty stomachs. You can even arrange your own picnic basket, which can be collected at the 360 Degree express takeaway at the top of the mountain. These baskets are not pre-packed, allowing you to choose what you want. Here it is not just about the view, though. It’s also about spending time with family and friends and what better way to do it than to be outdoors – especially with the season turning towards spring! In addition to the lazy picnics and the magnificent views, there is also a 1km Dassie Loop educational trail that wraps around the mountain to try out. This won’t fill the whole day, though, so while you’re at it, why not book yourself a pampering at Cradle Health Spa? *Valid from the 1st August - 30th August 2019

SUBSTITUTING COCKTAILS FOR MOCKTAILS Health and safety sets new trends Virgin cocktails or mocktails have become quite the trend among bar and restaurant goers, with mixologists increasingly including these libation options in their menus.

T

Finding mocktails that tickle your fancy is often quite difficult. Virgin cocktails often seem to have come as an afterthought on the menu, with very limited creativity that has gone into the planning of that part of the menu. Here are a couple of Pretoria-based spots, though, that have made an effort to offer you some great mocktail options:

26

KOI KOI’s mocktail menu is not necessarily very large, but the options they have are unique and look divine. Their Strawberry Smash – strawberries, mint, pineapple juice, lemon juice and lemon grass soda – should have Hello Pretoria • August 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

and out of this world (and perhaps a bit of a break as it is a short drive from of Pretoria, but so worth it), have a look at Restaurant Mosaic’s menu for some unforgettable non-alcoholic pairings with Chef Chantel Dartnall’s exquisite dishes. you ready for spring in no time. Salsa Mexican Grill Try Salsa Mexican Grill’s virgin cocktails for something different. In addition to these, they also offer Virgin Jugs which not only look impressive, but they also taste great! 1 www.salsamexicangrill.co.za There is no reason why you have to settle for a less elegant drink just because you’re watching your health or staying safe on the roads.

he reason for this could be one of many. With the laws on drinking and driving being super strict now, people don’t want to drink and drive anymore but they still want the experience of a specially made drink. Especially when celebrating. People are also much more health conscious these days, which means they would rather save on some calories by drinking a virgin cocktail. These alcohol-free drinks are also more hydrating and if you’re striving for a more healthy-looking skin, you’d much rather opt for a mocktail than a cocktail.

arts&culture WOMEN IN STATUES You strike a woman, you strike a rock Did you know that National Women’s Day has its origins right here in our hometown? On 9 August 1956 about 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings with one goal: A petition to do away with the pass laws during the Apartheid era.

In the spirit of Women’s Month and in celebration of what women has done for South Africa over the years and also in celebration of what is yet to come considering women’s influence in the country, we’ve gone on a quest to find statues of women in Pretoria and its surrounds: The Women’s Living Heritage Monument Situated at the Lillian Ngoyi Square in Pretoria, this monument tells the story of the four women who led 20 000 women in a peaceful protest against carrying a pass book and the degradation of African women.

The bronze statues include influential women from as early as the 1700s. Here you will be able to literally rub shoulders with the likes of socialist writer, Olive Schreiner, the first woman to give testimony before the British House of Commons, Harriette Colenso,

leader of the 1956 Women’s March, Lillian Ngoyi, singer and activist, Miriam Makeba and more. 1 www.nhmsa.co.za Little Mama Africa Angus Taylor’s Little Mama Africa stands seven metres tall at the Atteridgeville soccer stadium – a statue that was commissioned for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Voortrekker Monument At the foot of the Voortrekker Monument stands a bronze sculpture of a Voortrekker woman and her children – a sculpture by Anton van Wouw. It pays homage to the strength and courage of the Voortrekker women. 1 www.vtm.org.za These monuments are all reminders of how strong women really are – especially when they are driven by a certain passion or purpose. TAU GAME LODGE A waterhole for all

TAU Game Lodge is situated at the Northern part of Madikwe Game Reserve and we needed to get to the other side of it if we wanted to see the secretive siting that everyone was radioing about.

W

e held our hats tightly as the cruiser glided across red, then black, then whitish soil. The speedometer wasn’t working but we were moving fast considering it was a game drive. There was a siting and Ryan, our ranger, was adamant to get us there in time. As we cruised across the reserve - the vehicle kicking up dust and ground hornbills making way - we wondered what it could be. Later, it was all worth it as a lazy leopard lay quietly under a dry sicklebush. Number four of the big five within three hours. Not bad.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Supplied Words Bianca Spinner Images Supplied

The privately-owned TAU Game Reserve is situated in an area known as Groot Marico, which forms part of the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve. As one of 32 lodges on the reserve, it is unique in its offering as it has been built around one of the reserve’s largest waterholes. Sitting on our room’s private deck later that afternoon - overlooking the waterhole - it was magnificent to see how the animals take turns to splash around and quench their thirst in the heat of day. Elephant herds, lone buffalo, bossy and baby baboons, witty warthogs and elegant kudu carefully came closer, watchful for crocs and predators. While they sipped and dipped, water birds of all shapes and sizes moved around on the muddy edges of the waterhole, searching for insects and smallish fish. It’s literally a complete natural habitat right on your doorstep. The bonus of being perched on the deck for hours, is that you get to watch these animals’ behaviours closely - from elephant infants chasing blue wildebeest for the fun of it and baboon babies jumping from one adult’s back to the next. The experience is also not limited to your bedroom’s deck as it is extended to the restaurant area which has also been built on the edge of the waterhole. Guests retreat to the tables and chairs on the restaurant’s deck, rather than their rooms, with impressive camera lenses and birding books and there they sit for hours, enjoying South Africa’s winter sun and the ongoing entertainment presented by nature. “Good morning,” an over-excited voice greeted us over the telephone the next morning. “This is your wake-up call.” Even though lying in seemed like the preferred

option, we effortlessly got out of bed – curious about what the second morning’s game drive would bring. Hopping onto the cruiser – warmly wrapped in scarves, blankets and the lodge’s thoughtful warm water bottles, tummies full after a lovely buffet breakfast – we were all set and ready for action. Sooner than later, there it was. The lions had caught a zebra the previous evening and a pack of jackals were fighting over leftovers. A brown hyena also came around and scavenged one front leg. Then another came and took the other front leg. The lions were long gone – on their way to the waterhole and we caught them just in time to catch a glimpse of their grins after having such a delightful dinner the previous night. At TAU Game Lodge a Big Five Drive is not necessarily the rule, but quite manageable with a team of well-equipped rangers that go out of their way to show you as much as possible. We were lucky to spot six of the magnificent seven in two days’ time – something not many people get to brag about. KEEP YOUR

CONFERENCE COOL

Trendy ways to keep audiences interested and entertained

When it comes to conferencing, don’t you think the U-shape layout, peppermints and coffee breaks are overused and boring? What makes your conference different from the rest? hunts (ideal for exhibition halls), to host offsite events afterwards that will keep attendees engaged after hours and to keep your conference cosy in order to have guests stay on-site between sessions.

Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

Icebreaker If you’re looking for a great icebreaker, the Human Spectogram might be your answer. It involves voting with your feet with the facilitator asking a couple of questions and individuals have to move to certain areas in the room to indicate their answer. This is a great technique to gather some interesting insights about the audience fairly quickly and it poses as a fun and enjoyable method for individuals to get to know each other.

I

n a world where generation Y is the up and coming generation – the ones who will dictate the business world much sooner than we realise – we need to consider that the generic conference setup is not necessarily how they would want things to be done. In fact, with technology and instant gratification playing major roles in the direction things are going – conferencing styles and options included – we might just have to relook a few things before planning our next conferencing events. Sometimes it is good to shake things up a bit and it might be a good idea to find some new ideas on how to get people’s attention, how to encourage new ways of engaging, learning, collaborating and networking at a conference.

Interaction Today, face-to-face interaction is more important than ever. The usual presenter VS audience setup is so last season, which is why we love the idea of campfire sessions. It starts the same way as the traditional presentation with a speaker presenting an idea to his audience, but after about 20 minutes, the focus shifts to the audience and the presenter rather becomes a facilitator, inviting comments, insights and questions from the people in the room. This is a great way to learn and to share experiences – the perfect start to a very positive networking session. Other ways of engaging your audience is to integrate real-time polls into the conference content, to let guests take part in scavenger

Point Blank If you’re tired of speakers running around in circles and never actually getting to the point, lightning talks should definitely be incorporated into your next conferencing event. Speakers are given a limited amount of time to make their presentation, with or without slides. If they do use slides, it usually moves forward automatically to keep speakers to their allocated amount of time. This presentation method not only saves time, it also helps speakers to rid their presentations of any nitty gritty nonsense and to cut to the chase and it helps to keep the audience’s attention.

These are but a few ideas for your next event. Let us know how it went! Hello Pretoria • August 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

UNORTHODOX NOSTALGY Furniture for the long run

There is no doubt that Navarre Ebersohn is a born entrepreneur - his passion, his works and his office speak of it.

Between the three companies he owns, he covers a wide spectrum of products for a variety of clients – from individual clients to corporate clients like malls. From magazine stands to multi-use benches – you name it.

s we walk in, we are guided up a steep staircase that leads to an attic office filled with small-scale models and experimental furniture pieces. We sit at a table of which the top is covered in wooden hexagons – a unique piece that resembles exactly what his company and his brands stand for.

Navarre explains that he likes to experiment and with that comes combinations of materials that no one would ever have thought could work together. Many of the furniture pieces they produce consist of a combination of steel, wood and concrete or wood, leather and brass. The combinations are unorthodox and unusual, yet super durable and timeless.

Navarre started his company, Five past Five Designs in June 2013 and it has since only grown from strength to strength. A while after that he also launched Navarre and Marchand and later collaborated with Lumar Fourie and launched Luvarre, an ambitious innovation studio creating bespoke furniture in Pretoria. In addition to this, he also teaches 4th year design at TUT and he assists with the department’s new Maker’s Space for 1st year to 5th year students. His background is architecture and he still keeps that passion alive by collaborating with other architects and creating lovely, unique homes that can be fitted with some of his furniture and décor pieces.

KANDY KANE MAKEUP Behind the scenes

She was one of the first South African beauty vloggers on YouTube and inspires plebs and celebs with her witty makeup, fitness and lifestyle videos.

Did you have to learn some acting skills? Not really. People want to watch a fun, uplifting, inspirational video. It is only after I’ve started to be myself in my videos that people really started following me. Acting is a no-no for YouTube. You want to share your personality with the people watching your videos that they can get to know you on a personal level. Favourite tutorials to do? My husband (@kandysman) and I recently uploaded a video on YouTube – Budget Mukbang – on which we talk about intimate things like sex, which Afrikaans people never really talk about. The response was amazing. That type of videos always do well and Mukbang is quite a big thing on YouTube now. It’s when you eat food while you’re talking and filming. Makeup-wise, my foundation testing tutorials also do very well.

Have you always wanted to be a makeup artist? I’ve always loved makeup and researched the topic from the age of 15 already. I was always labelled as a “poppie” because I liked makeup so much. But, I was academically quite strong and did not really want to go into beauty as a profession. I wanted to climb the corporate ladder. Makeup was always just a hobby until it started to become big. What should I fill my makeup kit with? Invest in a primer, foundation, a pallet (Urban Decay has a pallet that includes a bronzer, blush and highlighter in one), a brow product (pencil, powder or Benefit’s Ka-BROW), mascara and eyeshadow. An eyeshadow base is also a good idea, as it will keep your eyeshadow fixed, as well as setting spray and something for your lips.

Your favourite makeup products? Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray is definitely my be all and end

How did it happen that you became famous? Consistency and hard work. I don’t think people really understand that it is a full-time job. To film a video often takes me about three hours. The editing can also take up to five hours!
