Hello, Pretoria! With the arrival of December comes a whole lot of excitement. It’s that time of the year where many of us are reminded of why we

work so hard throughout the year – to take that well-deserved break. Whether that break includes you going on that long-awaited overseas trip that you’ve been saving for, visiting family or friends elsewhere in this beautiful country of ours or staying at home enjoying the peace and quiet that Pretoria has to offer this time of the year, it’s a magical

The festive spirit is drizzled all over this December issue with lots of fun things to do in the City of Jacarandas, including a couple of lovely Christmas markets. As my family and I will be staying in Pretoria over the holidays, we are looking forward to exploring these markets and other fun Christmas-themed activities one by one. On our cover is the very talented guitar duo, CH2 and we are excited to listen to their Christmas album which is due to be available this month. CH2 continues to impress audiences around the world and we’re proud to say that they’re Pretoria-based. Read more about their exciting upcoming ventures on page 6. This issue is of course also filled with fun adventures to partake in this festive season, as well as some great ideas for shopping, so have a look and see what tickles your fancy. For me, December is a month in which you not only have to reflect on a year gone by, but also to re-evaluate and maximise on time spent with loved ones. May you find the time and the means to do so with a couple of the to-do options in this issue. I wish you a merry Christmas and a blessed and memorable festive season with your loved ones.

CH2 GUITAR DUO

Seeing CH2 Guitar Duo live really brings things into perspective. They use many different techniques to create a completely unique style, including classical, flamenco and Spanish techniques which they have both mastered to the tee. It’s a mesmerising affair, watching them merge the sounds of their two guitars effortlessly. It’s a different kind of chemistry that only musos will understand. CH2 Guitar Duo’s latest album, Starstruck (which got them nominated for their third SAMA Award in 2020) is proof that they’ve got a recipe that works and it comes with a couple of exciting colabs, including the likes of Los Angeles-based Michael NOMAD Ripoll who has worked with artists and producers like David Foster, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Josh Groban, Stevie Wonder, Sting and more. There are three compositions with NOMAD on the album, which might even result in a full colab album in the near future. They also collaborated with the Grammy-award winning flautist, Wouter Kellerman on the same album with a brilliant rendition of Sting’s Shape of my heart (which has also been included in Kellerman’s album that has been entered for a Grammy Award) and the African pop singer, Butera Knowless from Rwanda brings some African flair to the mix with soothing tones even in her mother tongue. Even Idols runner-up Lloyd Cele features on the album with a song called Keep moving and then they also did what Dirkie refers to as a technocoustic song – a mixture of acoustic and techno guitar music. America’s Got Talent CH2 did a very successful South African tour under Corneille’s label, Guitar Wizards with the Polish wünderkind and internet sensation – Marcin Patrzalek – earlier this year. He entered America’s Got Talent in 2019 and ended up in the semi-finals, which led to the duo also

entering the competition for 2020. So, keep your ears on the ground, HP! Maybe, just maybe, they’re the next ones to get Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer! Coming up Corneille talks passionately about CH2’s upcoming months, which hold a lot of promise and opportunity for the duo. On 13 December, CH2 will be performing with a couple of Spanish dancers in Stellenbosch’s Oude Libertas Theatre and on the 14th you’ll be able to catch them at the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market if you’re in the George area at that time. The festive season has hit them hard too – so hard, Corneille says, that they are considering doing a Christmas-themed album next year.

C

orneille Hutten and Dirkie van Staden are two of the most talented and inspiring guitarists South Africa has ever seen and they are based right here in the City of Jacarandas (when they’re not performing elsewhere). They were both born in Pretoria, but Dirkie grew up in the Cape. With his great interest in classical guitar and his immense talent, Dirkie followed CH2 since just after Matric, helped out with a gig or two and eventually joined the duo in 2017. The speed and synchronicity with which the two completely different personalities can perform together like they do on stage, is unbelievable! “Two guitars together just show you how versatile the instrument can be,” says Dirkie.

In February 2020 the duo will board a cruise ship from Luanda to Cape Town for a show booked by a company in Florida and in April they will be doing a mid-week run with a new Spanish Fire show called Olé at Theatre on the Square in Sandton. This same show will also be at the Atterbury Theatre on 27 February 2020. Guitar Fantasy, a show that has done really well in 2019 will also continue to amaze audiences in 2020. It includes different genres from around the world combining CH2 with another guitarist of choice - from dance to old classics like Hotel California; from Sway to Irish drinking songs. Find Your Music CH2 also has a product facilitated by Corneille himself for corporate companies specifically where they offer a motivational session with an inspirational story of finding your inner music (personally and at work) combined with some of CH2’s most impressive compositions and guitar techniques. You can book this musical motivational session for your next team building event or yearly corporate function. It’s definitely something different to the norm; entertainment and inspiration with substance.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” On a personal note Corneille has recently started working on an exciting new concept on the side. Being nominated for a SAMA Award for The Best Sound Engineer for the first time has led him to produce his own kiddies show. “I like the children’s market,” he says. Hence, Lenny the Lion and Hugo the Hyena will take to the stage with an hour of fun songs, dancing and games on 9 December. He says he wanted to create a theatre show that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. “All the music is original,” he says. “The project is also in support of the community. I want to go to schools in townships with it. It has small lessons built into it, like sharing is caring.” The show is aimed at primary school children from Grade 1 to Grade 7, it’s dual medium and comes from years of experience in producing and seeing which shows work. Tickets for Lenny & Hugo are available at www.itickets.co.za at R85 per person. 1 www.ch2.co.za

CHRISTMAS TIME A time for family

If you’ve got kids, they’ve probably asked you to take out the Christmas tree in November already. There is a certain kind of magic attached to this time of the year and it starts with family.

8

According to www.childdevelopmentinfo.com interactive time spent between parents and children has a multitude of benefits. It lets the child feel important and loved, children have a chance to model their parents’ behaviour, parents get to learn more about children’s strengths and weaknesses and evidently guide them in a better way, children are given the chance to voice their feelings and their thoughts and parents and children get to build a stronger relationship. Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Here are a couple of ways in which you can spend more quality time with your family this Christmas: Mealtimes During the year things are often so rushed that we barely even dine together anymore. Make sure that you make time for family mealtimes this festive season. Involve the family with menu selection, food prep, the laying of the table, serving, eating together and cleaning up. Sitting around a table with family allows for conversation – a very important building block in strengthening family relationships. Sports December in Pretoria boasts the best weather. Take advantage of it and play cricket or catch in the yard. Hold fun swimming competitions or chase each other through the sprinklers. Go hiking (Pretoria has so many great parks to hike in), go camping (Dinokeng is a great option) or have a picnic.

Hobbies Do stuff together. Build puzzles, play cards, do crafts. Attend a concert or a theatre show together. Bake Christmas cookies together and decorate them with all kinds of things. Make Christmas tree decorations from clay. Wrap Christmas gifts together. Books Read Christmas stories for bedtime. There are so many books about Christmas and surely you’ll be able to find a couple of second-hand books at one of the many Christmas markets taking place in and around Pretoria. Being part of a family makes you feel like you belong; like you matter. It’s not only important to feel that you matter, but also to let others feel that they do. Make sure that you spend some quality time with your family this Christmas and enjoy every minute of it. Time is precious – use it well.

N

o one has the same Christmas stories to tell, but for most of us Christmas memories always involve family and close friends. It is that time of the year where you get to spend time with people you love and forget about the year’s challenges and troubles and we feel it’s important to take advantage of that. Spending time with your family is one of the most important things in life. Steven Covey once said: “Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.” We completely agree.

SHOPPING? Whether you’re new to Pretoria and still scouting for the best neighbourhoods or whether you’re well-known to the city but looking for a change (or an investment opportunity), these are the best neighbourhoods to look into.

P

retoria’s vibrant energy is tangible, and the city undoubtedly and proudly reflects our rainbow nation. It offers some of the best weather patterns with great summers, short winters and those one-of-a-kind thunderstorms that cool you off in no time. Pretoria might be classified as a city, but it is still very much a town with few high-rise buildings and beautiful views of its surrounding hillsides. Young and professional Young professionals are usually on the lookout for trendy, urban vibes. They are anxious to climb the property ladder and they consider the spending of their earnings very carefully. When choosing a first primary residence, there are a number of factors that play a role in the decisionmaking process including convenience and security, as well as time management. Neighbourhoods where green elements, technological advances, security and location are key have become more popular among young professionals and in Pretoria that includes the Menlyn Maine precinct, Brooklyn and Nieuw Muckleneuk. These neighbourhoods all have great access to the N1 and offer an easy commute to the Gautrain station and according to Pam Golding’s regional executive, Retha Schutte Brooklyn is definitely growing as an investment node. It’s a zoo! Silver Lakes Golf Estates and surrounding lifestyle estates pose to be the perfect solution for young families. It has a very good location

considering the N4 that travels into the city centre, the N1 North and South and also Solomon Mahlangu. People are attracted to Silver Lakes Golf Estate and country living due to its cosmopolitan community, security and its third phase which includes a game reserve with free roaming animals. The bigger Silver Lakes and Hazeldean area is a mixed-use community combining residential, retail, restaurants, office blocks, medical suites, a gym and even a popular weekend market, great school options and a popular retirement village. Tired, but not yet retired Brooklyn and Nieuw Muckleneuk are also popular for people who wish to scale down to an all-inclusive home environment. They look for properties offering convenient amenities and possibly something close to their original large full-title residence where all their friends and family still live. Retired, but full of life Being retired doesn’t mean you’ve retired from life. In fact, it could mean that you’ve got a whole new life and that is super exciting. Silver Lakes Golf Estate is not only suited for young families, but also for retirees. So is The Retreat in Hazeldean. Often the secret to not becoming isolated during retirement is to stay part of the hustle and bustle and not too far from the children. 1 www.pamgolding.co.za E @PamGoldingPretoria

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

Don’t start the new year in the red

It’s so easy to fall into the frenzy of Christmas shopping, only to kick yourself when January and February’s budgets don’t look so good.

S

hopping during the festive season comes with a lot of excitement and treats and we have no problem with that. But among all the excitement, we often get lost between Christmas decorations, gifts for family and friends, table decorations, special ingredients for Christmas lunch and of course New Year’s Eve celebrations and forget about our budgets. And, even though that thirteenth cheque or bonus that comes with the year-end celebrations (if you’re so lucky) is great, it can also be seen as the seducer of the season. Keeping to a budget during December might be tough, but come January, you’ll thank us! So, here are our key tips to keeping to a budget during the festive season:

1. This way, you’ll be able to determine how much you want and

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Supplied

Make a list

need to spend on Christmas-themed shopping and you’ll be able to separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. You’ll also be able to cut down on the people for whom you’d like to buy gifts, which is good because if you’re like us, you’d probably want to buy gifts for everyone in town! a limit 2. Set Emotions are wonderful but during this time of the year they

can be the one reason why you overspend. Setting a spending limit for yourself will help you to stay within the boundaries.

or card? 3. Cash Paying in cash will help you to stay within your budget. Using your credit card might just have you end up losing track of how much you’ve spent and that R20 here and R50 there adds up really quickly. alone 4. Shop If you’re not a lone shopper, perhaps you should consider being

one just this once. Shopping with friends who have poor spending habits or who have no need to shop on a budget might just lure you into buying things you did not plan on buying.

the fun part 5. Unwrapping’s Unwrapping is often one of the best parts of Christmas eve –

especially for kids. Instead of wrapping all six pairs of socks in one gift, split it up into six different gifts. Tip: No need for fancy Christmasthemed wrapping paper. Newspaper with a red ribbon around works just as well! Combine gifts

6. If you want to give a bigger and more special gift, why not give

it together? That way you are able to buy things like tickets to a show, a weekend away and more.

your own gifts 7. Make Homemade cookies add such a special, personal touch to a gift. The festive season is one of the best seasons to pursue new ventures and long-lost hobbies. Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

A CRASH-COURSE ON

CONTACTS Love your eyes

Optometrist Candîce van Eeden has two Vision Works practices (Vision Works Fourways and Vision Works Dainfern Square Shopping Centre) with regular patients from Pretoria and as far as Zambia, Zimbabwe and Britain. She shared some of her expertise on looking after your eyes.

Did you know?

also be a refresher course on how to care for your contacts and to identify bad habits you might have developed over time that need to change. Eye tests can often be a little intimidating. Knowing what you are being tested for, might help. The primary test is usually to establish if you have any need for a correction on your glasses. “We also assess the pressure inside the eye. If the pressure is high, we need to send you to the correct doctors to have that attended to. We also assess the inner health of the eye. The most important thing to know is that many eye diseases show very little symptoms until it is way past the best time to treat them. If you have regular eye tests, we can prevent things from getting too bad before it gets treated.”

Fun fact

Optometrists preferably don’t test your eyes when you are more than six months pregnant. This is because women swell during pregnancy and evidently your cornea does too. This can alter your true prescription, so they rather wait until around three months post-partum when the body and hormones have normalised again.

Healthy Eyes

Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Basic eye tests

The cornea is the clear surface of the eye that the contact lens sits over. This part of the eye doesn’t have blood vessels and for this reason the only way for it to get oxygen is from the environment. First and foremost, a comprehensive eye test annually is non-negotiable, especially if you are someone who wears contact lenses. “They are just like any other form of medical device and like any other prescription,” says van Eeden. “Even if you believe your prescription is still the same, we as optometrists need to assess the health of the eye, how your eye is reacting to the contact lens material, the lens fit and whether you suffer from dry eyes. We also look at whether the solution you are using is still good enough and if you are still following the care guidelines given to you at your last test.” She says the eye test could

Never buy contact lenses from flea markets or beauty shops – it’s a true medical device Ask your optometrist which contact lens solution to use – certain solutions are compatible with certain lenses Rub your contact lenses every single morning before putting them in your eyes. This is essential to remove any hard deposits.

The balance between contacts and glasses

Due to the fact that contact lenses cut off the oxygen supply to your cornea, cutting down your wearing time of contacts in a day might be a good idea. “Always, always, always have glasses as well as contact lenses. This is essential to rest the eyes and for in case you get an eye infection and can’t wear contact lenses for several days,” says van Eeden. You should also make sure that your glasses and contact lens script is close enough that you can’t tell the difference when you change from the one to the other.

espite the huge breakthroughs that have been made over the years with regards to oxygen reaching the cornea through contact lenses, all lenses still suffocate the corneal surface. One of the negative effects due to the lack of oxygen to the cornea is the fact that the body goes into adaptation mode, growing blood vessels from the outer rim of the eye to get more oxygen to the cornea, which causes spidery veins in your vision. The problem with this is that even when you realise the problem, it’s too late as these blood vessels never go away. Even though the blood will drain out of them, you will still have ghost veins that affect your vision clarity. “Another negative effect is that the cornea swells due to decreased oxygen, leading to blurry vision with erratic prescription,” says van Eeden.

CHANTEL DARTNALL

chef of the month

A year of great success

Chef Chantel Dartnall is no stranger in Pretoria – let alone the world. She epitomises the Afrikaans saying: Klein botteltjie, groot gif and we are so happy to have her in our midst.

“ 2019 was a big, successful year for me personally, my team and the restaurant with top international awards,” she says. “It is one of

the finest compliments that a Pretoria restaurant is able to put South Africa on the culinary map with its wine cellar, cuisine and beautiful museums.” And we totally agree! Chef Chantel has been travelling a lot lately, accepting all kinds of awards worldwide. This includes seven different awards at the World of Fine Wine Awards, among which Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient was also acknowledged for the best wine list in the world. The restaurant also walked away with the Grande Award from the Wine Spectator and the Icon Award for their wine list from Diner’s Club International. Chef Chantel also received the Haute Grandeur award for best chef in Africa and Restaurant Mosaic received the awards for the best scenic restaurant and best European cuisine at the Luxury Travel Awards. At the American Express Awards Restaurant Mosaic was the only one to receive the wine award and they also got awarded the 10 Years and More Award (as this was the 13th year in a row for them to receive the award). In addition to that, Chef Chantel, her team and Restaurant Mosaic have been nominated for the annual Eat Out Awards, they’ll be receiving an award in Paris at the La List Awards (where they’ve previously been acknowledged as the number three restaurant in the country with a rating of 91%, placing them under the top 100 restaurants in the world) and they’ll also be well represented at the RASA Awards on 2 December.

Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

Chef Chantel says that her main vision is to improve on what was done the previous day and that the biggest goal is to ensure that each guest has an unforgettable experience at Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient. “To get acknowledgement is wonderful, but our top priority is happy clients.” Her menus are increasingly becoming more botanical and natural, with a large focus on returning to nature. One of her latest dishes, the Blink-blaar-wag-’n-bietjie epitomises this trend. In this dish you get to taste the rich and decadent natural nectar harvested from the Francolin Conservation Area in which Restaurant Mosaic is situated. “It’s a bit of the environment on your plate,” says Chef Chantel. “Native and from our environment, true to South Africa and Restaurant Mosaic - these are the elements we are currently strongly focusing on.” Francolin Conservation Area, Crocodile River Valley, Elandsfontein, Pretoria m 012 371 2902 Q @restaurantmosaicattheorient 1 www.restaurantmosaic.com Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Added to that is the lovely piazza-type area in the middle of various eateries which includes a water feature, a largescale chessboard and other activities to entertain the kids. Fun fact

Plaka’s Meze for Two is definitely worth a try. We visited Plaka on a day where large parts of the city were hit by load shedding and even among all the chaos in the background (which we didn’t even notice), the restaurant managed to get the food out without any apparent challenges. YOUR GILLS right here in Pretoria

If you’re an ocean lover, living in Pretoria could often pose as a challenge as there are not much more than ponds and pools to escape to. We have found a few solutions to your predicament.

Centurion Canoe Club is another popular platform to paddle from. The facilities are shared with the Pretoria Sailing Club at the Rietvlei Dam, which forms part of the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Here you paddle at own risk, as there have been hippo sightings at the dam before. They offer beginner paddling classes for those who would like to join the club. 1 www.centcc.co.za Sailing If you’re more of the sailing type, Pretoria even has its own sailing club! The Pretoria Sailing Club, also located on the shores of the Rietvlei Dam, was founded in 1959 and is one of South Africa’s largest sailing clubs. It has a sailable area of about 3km² and remains the club of choice for both single- and double-handed dinghies. The club hosts numerous regattas each year, including national, regional and club events for various classes. 1 www.psc.org.za

And let’s not forget those ill-practiced family concerts with the children singing Christmas carols to grandma and grandpa’s delight. Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

s part of Steyn’s Culinary School’s fun cooking classes, they recently hosted a Fun Cooking Cookies for Christmas class, right in time for the festive season. This is only one of the many weekly fun cooking classes they offer. Other themes in 2019 included Thai, Vietnamese, street food and Middle Eastern Fun Cooking classes. Not only do these classes boast the opportunity to up your game in the kitchen, it is also an evening filled with healthy fun for either a girls’ night out, a date night or even a team building. Discover your inner artist by baking and decorating some Christmas cookies this year. Gather the kids for a fun-filled day around the kitchen table (or maybe rather outside) and have them decorate their own cookies that can even double up as decorations for this year’s Christmas tree or as Christmas gifts for guests coming to visit. What you need • Tray or table to decorate on • Sugar cookies (find the recipe on www.hellopretoria.co.za) • Royal icing (find the recipe on www.hellopretoria.co.za) • Small sandwich bags • Toothpicks • Food colouring (gel) from Bakers Bin • Luster Dust from Bakers Bin • Strong alcohol like gin, cane or vodka • Small bakers brush

Before you bake: Press a small hole in each cookie before baking in order to be able to add a ribbon to it if you’d like to hang it on your Christmas tree. Icing: Mix your royal icing with egg white or water. Don’t let the icing roll over the cookies’ edges – that’s so last year! Rather start with a frame and flood it with icing. Chef Suzanne also suggests that you rather use gel food colouring as the colours come out much better than with the powder. Bad painter? If you’re not a fan of precision painting, add some additional glam to your cookies by drawing some patterns onto them with an edible pen. Experiment: Nothing keeps you from experimenting a little. If you’d like to use Luster Dust on your cookies, mix it with strong alcohol like gin, cane or vodka and not water, as water will let the icing melt. The alcohol with evaporate, leaving the beautiful colour from the Luster Dust on your Christmas cookies – the perfect sparkle as a final touch. 345 Glyn Street, Hatfield, Pretoria m 012 362 5340 E @steynsculinaryschool Q @steynsculinaryschool 1 www.steynsculinaryschool.co.za Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Tables overlook Sandton from the seventh floor of The Leonardo, Africa’s new tallest building. There are glorious, luxurious indoor and outdoor seating areas plus a sunlit pool terrace, two private dining rooms and a wine library. The décor and design are curated around the element of air; the transparent, exposed architecture with visible columns and beams; and Joburg, being both the City of Gold and the largest urban forest in the world. Aurum’s kitchen is headed up by Paulo’s former chef colleagues at Cube Tasting Kitchen, head chef Darren O’Donovan and sous chef and sommelier Lisa de Beer. The menu features contemporary European cuisine with a touch of local flair and has been inspired by Darren and Lisa’s travels around Europe. By day, Aurum presents the ‘Light’ menu, Solis, which offers à la carte breakfast, brunch and lunch. By night, Aurum takes on a new sense of luxury manifested by the ‘Dark’ menu, Luna, for dinner.  The food exudes unbuttoned elegance. Signature dishes include the cured springbok, slow-braised pork belly and ‘Afternoon Tea’ – a dessert inspired by the memory of dunking Ouma rusks into tea, showcasing the flavours of rooibos, buttermilk and Clemengold.

Accompanying the food menu is an equally impressive wine list, which features 99 of both South Africa and the globe’s finest wines, many of which are available by the glass. Compiled by Lisa, the wine list has been designed to convey the best on offer from around the world without being pretentious and inaccessible. In the wine library, there’s a smaller list on offer that boasts special vintages, limited releases and some different, more ‘edgy’ options for the adventurous.  Aurum also offers a cocktail list designed by specialist mixologist, Alex Farnell, as well as a selection of after-dinner options – think grappa, cognac, fine whiskies and premium spirits. Even though Aurum is so central to The Leonardo, it’s entirely independent from the hotel brand and a golden oasis for visitors and residents of Joburg alike.  Whether you’re planning to book a table for two for a hot date night or want to book in a power lunch to impress at a suitably sophisticated spot, you can trust us when we say that Aurum is just the place. Be sure to like and follow Aurum on social media so that you’re kept in the loop as to when bookings open.   0A Maude Street, Sandton  1 www.aurumrestaurant.co.za  k info@aurum.kitchen  E @aurumrestaurant  D @aurumsandton  Q  @aurumrestaurantza  Hello Pretoria • December 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

OFFICE FESTIVITIES Last-minute celebrations for skeleton staff

There are so many things that need to be said and done before the year comes to a halt that we often forget to celebrate. Here are some last-minute festive celebrations for the office which will probably be emptying up as the month progresses.

B

ringing in some festive spirit into the office might just be what pulls you and your team through the last bit of 2019. At this time of the year everyone seems to be a little crankier, a little less patient and not so eager to be at their desks. We suggest adding some last-minute festive celebrations into the mix at the office, which will hopefully and most probably lift the mood a bit.

Decorate

A report based on a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology states that decorating your front yard makes you appear more friendly. According to Independent, people who bring out their Christmas trees earlier than others are much happier and excited in life. So, why not do this at the office too? We’ve seen companies instil a Christmas decorating ceremony, where each employee gets to hang a decoration with their name on. This not only makes you feel valued in the office, but also lets you take part in something known to be family tradition which lets you feel like you belong. You’ll find some stunning, elegant décor options at Biggie Best in Brooklyn Mall. Or pop in at Santa’s Warehouse for a wide variety of Christmas-themed decorations. 1 www.biggiebest.co.za 1 www.santaswarehouse.co.za

Having the same old sandwich for lunch that you’ve been having for the past eleven months is quite boring. Bring in a new tradition in the office where each individual or each team gets to prepare their favourite festive lunch for the office this month. This should be a fun activity which will also let you get to know your colleagues on a whole new level – especially if there are a variety of cultures in the office. Also try to dine together and don’t head on back to your desk after dishing up. For an introvert it might take some courage, but you’ll soon find that eating together often evolves in friendships you never thought were possible!

Once the office starts emptying up for Christmas and New Year’s there are always those few staff members who stay behind. Many use this time to sort out their desks, recuperate and prepare for the new year. Still, an empty office with skeleton staff could be quite depressing, especially when you consider what your colleagues are up to – playing touch rugby on the beach, getting that well-deserved tan, having fun with family and friends. So, why not head on out for lunch instead of staying indoors reading that email for the third time? Pretoria has numerous fabulous restaurants perfect for lunch or even after-work drinks and this time of the year often allows for you to take off at least an hour earlier. GARDEN Entertainment Get your backyard festive-ready

Plantland has been around for more than 100 years, with Malanseuns at the steer. What originally started with fruit trees, evolved into one of Pretoria’s most trusted nurseries and they share some tips on prepping your garden for the festive season.

Ample seating Make sure your garden has ample seating as your guests will most probably want to mingle outside rather than inside. If you don’t have a boma area, consider adding that to your early-December to-do list and build some cement seating around it which you can spruce up with some brightly coloured scatter cushions. Plant a border of Buxus or grass like Ophiopogon Kyoto to soften the edges of the boma area and make sure that there is a clear pathway to the boma (which you can off course decorate with some candles or fairy lights for your event).

Staying with the theme If you’d like to keep to the Christmas theme in your garden, Stanley from Plantland suggests red and white lollipop roses. Roses do however take a bit more effort in terms of prepping and pruning. Stanley says once the rose’s flower has gone off, you can cut it off three leaves down and it will start growing new flowers again. It is only around 20 July that you need to do a proper winter pruning. Remember: The more you cut a rose, the more it bloom

Did you know: Bounceback is back in South Africa! You’ll be surprised at how quickly it lets your garden bounce back to life and the added bonus is that it is 100% organic.

Waterwise plants If you’re keen on going more waterwise in your garden (which we strongly suggest), consider adding some Agapanthuses to your garden – especially the area where you will be entertaining. Plantland recently added a new Agapanthus (Agapanthus Buccaneer) to their range that blooms until March, which means you could have some pretty purple flowers in your garden over Christmas and in the new year!

Edible options Using plants and veggies from your garden for that special dish or as table decoration is just so much more special. Try planting strawberries and gooseberries and perhaps you’re lucky to have a couple to pick for your Christmas dessert this year!

Another great option is rock roses, of which there are numerous options to choose from. Some of them even have a bit of red in them, which fits in perfectly with the Christmas theme and the new Black Prince looks beautiful combined with the grey ones (Echeveria Elegans). Another waterwise option is Viburnums.

DOUVOORDAG

“Daar is vir my twee kategorieë. Goed wat ek eintlik nog altyd wou skryf en wou vasvang in ’n liedjie om dit te hê - amper soos ’n memorabilia. Die ander goed is lewenslesse vir onsself om onsself te motiveer op die pad om bietjie braaf te wees. Dit is eintlik waaroor die album se titel ook gaan – Die
