New Year’s NO GO!! How not to kick 2019 off on the wrong foot

We see it and hear it year after year. New year, new me blah blah. It’s a lovely sentiment, and for those who get it right, well done! But why set yourself up to fail so early in the year? Here are some resolutions that you should avoid when the New Year rolls around. Do not resolve to diet

Avoid any and all fad diets. It’s the most tempting resolution of all. After the indulgence of the festive season, we commit to crazy things like cutting out carbs and sugars, egg diets, juice diets or the infamous cabbage soup diet. #NoThanks! The truth is that a detox post festive season is a terrible idea. No matter how well you start, it is an unrealistic way to live and will leave you feeling shi*tty by the time March rolls around.

Rather than commit to crazy calorie counting try some of these more realistic, manageable and balanced tactics:

Lean into the craving: As counter-intuitive as this may sound, eating what you long for keeps cravings manageable. If you don’t eat bagels or cake for weeks on end, when you do eventually succumb to carbs it’s going to get messy! The same goes for sugars and sweets. Death by Smarties is not a nice way to go. Eat a little cleaner in the week. Life doesn’t have to be all green veg and fish. Save the weekends for your favourite pasta dish or pizza outing and keep it clean-ish from Monday to Friday.

Do not resolve to be a better person

6

Could you be more self-deprecating than committing to being a better person? Does that mean for the past however many years you have been Hello Pretoria • January 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

alive on this earth you have been a k*k person? Absolutely not. Resolving to be a better person is vague and precarious. It alters your mindset to believe you are not good enough.

Rather do this:

Resolve to do a little better: Whether it’s being more patient with your colleagues or improving your golf swing, aim for smaller, measurable improvements that won’t land you on the shrink’s couch. Be kind to yourself. Before you decide to overhaul yourself, take some selfstock on the things that make you rock. Then rock them harder.

Do not resolve to expedite anything

Whether you think 2019 is the year to get married, have kids, move in together or start a new job, trust us when we tell you that doing any of these things for the sake of it being a new year is a terrible idea. These are the milestones of your life that should happen in their own time – when all the necessary people and circumstances are good and ready.

In the meantime, rather use the new year to mull over these important aspects of your life:

holiday season but don’t let that trick you into thinking you are bored at work and about to hit a ceiling. Chat to your manager about possible growth opportunities and what you’d like to achieve first. That’s a whole lot of things not to resolve to do as the new year comes in which begs the question, what should you resolve to do?

Relationship check: Are you in the right relationship and still enjoying each other’s company? Go into the new year open to the idea that your current relationship could get more serious but don’t pressure yourself or your partner to make decisions you aren’t ready for. Maybe it’s a good time to plan a weekend away while the weather is still warm to see how you travel together?

Well we thought you’d never ask. As the new year rolls in, why not try these on for size:

Baby check: Could you financially afford to look after a small human

Spend more time with the people you love: No need to get

right now? Are you ready to give up your easy come and go social life and the ability to travel whenever you like? Don’t let the start of the New Year send your ovaries into over-drive just yet. Assess the stage of life in which you find yourself and chat to your partner?

Job check: Do you enjoy what you are doing and is there room to grow

to plan some fun things this year whether it’s going to a comedy show on occasion or board games with friends. This one’s easy.

fancy either. Catch up with friends and family over a braai at home on the weekends or a meal at your favourite restaurant.

Plan less and live more: It’s a cliché we know but it’s true. We

spend so much time planning and not nearly enough time kicking back and enjoying ourselves. So now that you’ve read this, forget about new year’s resolutions altogether and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

Almost all of the products available on the site are created and produced in Africa with a strict list of criteria in place to ensure that only the best quality items go live. Suret Alive is Pretoria born and bred. She has been living in the city of jacarandas for 28 years and is currently self-employed, working as an image consultant and personal trainer. Her home is in Brooklyn and to her, living in this side of town is a bonus, as it is close to the N1, the Gautrain station and large shopping centres like Menlyn Park Shopping Centre and Brooklyn Mall. Of course, the Jacaranda trees in this old neighbourhood are always a treat and Suret just loves Brooklyn for its unique beauty and the fact that it is currently one of the safer neighbourhoods to live in. 1 www.menlynpark.co.za 1 www.brooklynmall.co.za Another one of her favourite places in the city of jacarandas is Pretoria East. “There is a lovely residential estate, Boardwalk Meander, and also a variety of farms and plots that are open to the public to use for hiking and jogging.” Boardwalk Meander is situated on the Eastern-most border of Pretoria and boasts magnificent birdlife that can be spotted from a couple of bird hides and walkways bordering lakes. There is also a jetty where children like to feed the wild ducks that seem to have taken up permanent residency here. Suret also likes to jog at Hedianga Farm, a farm with facilities for mountain biking, trail running, birding and dog walking. She says that exercising at SEB’s Elite Boxing at Loftus is also fun. The hour sessions ensure good muscle building and cardio. “I also like the FitFirst Studio in Hazelwood, because their sessions are only 30 minutes long. I feel very at home there.” 1 www.boardwalkmeander.co.za When she’s not exercising, her husband likes to treat her to a meal at Modern Italian Kitchen in Menlo Park. But, he’s not the only one who gets to spoil someone; she likes to stick him for a movie at Brooklyn Mall. Their ultimate favourite, though, is the Van Gaalen Cheese Farm just outside of Pretoria. 1 www.modernitalian.co.za 1 www.vangaalen.co.za Suret’s plans for this new year include practising patience, taking definite steps to handle stress better and learning to cook healthy dinners. FLEISHEREI BISTRO Casual, Contemporar y Dining in Centurion

Whilst Fleisherei Bistro is renowned for gourmet burgers and A grade grills, the menu includes a wide variety of tasty options to suit all palates, making it difficult to make mealtime decisions and resulting in repetitive food envy as colourful, wholesome plates pass the table!

D

riving to Fleisherei Bistro you may think you’re headed to the wrong place as the map leads you up towards Centurion’s Business and Industrial parks near Midstream but tucked away down a flight of stairs hides a gem of a family restaurant.

Words: Shevaun McCreddy Images: Supplied

The restaurant prides itself on casual, contemporary dining and the clean, simple interiors reflect this perfectly. With ample indoor and outdoor seating and a comprehensive, secure kiddies play area it’s a perfect selection for family meals and equally suitable for business lunches, year-end functions and special occasions. Our friendly waiter, Andrew, enquired whether this was our first time at Fleisherei Bistro and on responding yes, proceeded to show us where to find the restrooms. A simple gesture, one which I’ve never experienced before, but that stuck with me as I realized it is inevitably the first question, we’re likely to ask and his proactive hospitality made us feel right at home. Whether all staff are trained to do likewise, or whether Andrew had just taken it upon himself I can’t be sure, but he is one of the reasons our trip to the restaurant was so memorable. On asking for suggestions (after pouring over the menu for the hundredth time in utter indecision), Andrew gave us his personal top five and sold us on the Matured Rib-Eye and the Pulled Pork on Ciabatta. Simply plated but bursting with flavour, Fleisherei Bistro packs the punches where it matters most. The ribeye was tender and juicy, served with thick cut potato chips (or the option

of salad) whilst the pulled pork ciabatta was as delicious and flavourful as it was colourful and beautiful to look at. My one regret is not having sufficient appetite to try a gourmet burger whilst there with options including the deboned belly rib burger with crispy onions and apple and gherkin slaw, or the Pure Indulgence Burger with cheese sauce, bacon bits, spring onion and shoestring fries. Those are just two of the many options which will have your mouth watering and it’s clear to say a return trip (or many) are required to work our way through the menu! The kiddies area is clean and secure with high walls and only two access points from the seated area. There aren’t childminders on-site but provided you’re sitting outside, parents have a full view over the entire play area, ensuring the little ones can’t go far unnoticed. The restaurant is equipped with WiFi which is free for patrons to use – making it a perfect location for a business lunch or mobile office for those who work remotely. If you’re a smoker, the only downfall is that they don’t have a smoking section so smoke breaks require a trip out to the car park for your nicotine fix. If you’re looking for a wholesome, value for money meal for the whole family, Fleisherei Bistro comes highly recommended. Just remember to arrive hungry. 221A Landshut Drive, Brakfontein, Centurion m 012 004 0552 1 www.fleishereibistro.co.za Hello Pretoria • January 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

FINE WINE ON A BUDGET Because the only thing worse than bad wine is no wine!

They say that life is too short to drink bad wine, so it seems we have a dilemma on our hands. January is tough and at this point, most of us are tightening our belts and waiting desperately for our first paycheck, so drinking top quality wine on a reasonable budget feels impossible. While most Joburg restaurants and boutique wine stores cater to a deeppocketed clientele, we’ve found some budget-friendly wines that taste expensive – or will at least fool your friends who think they know what expensive vino tastes like. Villiera Chenin Blanc 2018

Price and where it’s available? R58 from www.bottleshop.co.za What makes this a ‘fine wine’ despite the price? Villiera’s Chenin Blanc doesn’t have a reputation for being one of SA’s best value wines for nothing! It covers various price points, but the 2018 bottle is almost as fine as the vintages with intense notes of fruit and honey with a hint of wood spice on the nose. Would anyone guess that this is a budget wine? Not a chance. Villiera is synonymous with award-winning wines, from the Gold Wine Awards to the Gilbert and Gaillard International Challenge. As soon as your guests see the name on the bottle, they won’t even look at far as the year! Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? At the pool on 54 on Bath’s rooftop garden in Rosebank. What dish would you pair this wine with? Oysters, grilled white fish and prawns, savoury canapés, creamy white cheeses and the list goes on. Value for money from 1 to 10? 8/10

Hill & Dale Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz

20

Price and where it’s available? R72 from www.bottleshop.co.za What makes this a ‘fine wine’ despite the price? This deep, rich ruby-hued wine has amazing ageing potential – you can enjoy it now or experience its complexities enhanced with a further 36 to 60 months of cellaring. Plus, it’s the perfect balance of opulence and restraints. Its simple fruitiness is backed up by a food-friendly, elegant and lingering aftertaste. Would anyone guess that this is a budget wine? Hill & Dale wines are made at the Stellenzicht cellar from grapes harvested from vineyards around Stellenbosch, arguably the most famous wine region in the country – so definitely not. Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? At one of James Diack’s sustainable eateries in The Parks. What dish would you pair this wine with? A simple spaghetti bolognaise or a smoked pulled-pork burger. Value for money from 1 to 10? 10/10 Hello Pretoria • January 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Fat Bastard Pinot Noir Rosé Price of wine and where it's available? Retails between R75 and R85 and is available from www.robertsonwinery.co.za and main liquor outlets. What makes this wine a 'fine wine' despite the price? Firstly, how fabulous is the bottle? Secondly this high quality, fruit-driven, rich and round, food-friendly wine is TDF! Would anyone guess that this is a budget wine? Never, Fat Bastard is world-renowned and when Thierry and Guy first created these delicious wines, they did it with gusto. They poured their hearts, souls and great dollops of generosity into every bottle. Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? Sunday Soirees at the Living Room in Maboneng watching the sunset. What dish would you pair with it? Rose flavoured macaroons or a slice of red velvet cake. Value for money from 1 to 10? 8/10

Vriesenhof Unwooded Chardonnay Price of wine and where it's available? R100 from all major retail outlets. What makes this wine a 'fine wine' despite the price? It rhymes with George Cloonaaay. Would anyone guess that this is a budget wine? We don’t think so; this wine proves with tasting to be an elegant example of both style and class.  Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? Chardonnay will soon replace Sauvignon Blanc as South Africa’s favourite white wine, so look out for it everywhere. We would take this wine to the new Kolonaki Greek eatery on 4th avenue Parkhurst. What dish would you pair with it? A beautiful kabeljou with a white wine jus. Value for money from 1 to 10? 8/10

Legend has it that it grew to such an enormous size because a powerful chief was buried below it – but regardless if this is true or not, it’s a sight worth seeing. A VISIT TO PRETORIA’S PAST Meet Pretoria’s Ghosts

Many people are curious about ghosts from the past. Pretoria surprisingly has many tales (or truths) to tell.

26

Die Pretoria Spookbus Toerproduksie hosts a monthly ghost tour through the dark streets of Pretoria – a theatrical production on wheels. Journalist and writer, Jaco HoughCoetzee, acts as one of the storytellers and much research has gone into the history of Pretoria and its ghosts. The production touches on well-documented ghost tales from across South Africa, but it also tells stories about Pretoria-based ghosts. Stories about the Erasmus girls who come out to play will give you the chills while standing at the enormous Erasmus House’s gate and a visit to the site Hello Pretoria • January 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

of the Belgrave Hotel, where a young girl was murdered, will keep you on your toes. (At least you get to calm your nerves by having a drink at the hotel’s small, intimate bar, even though the site is currently under construction). Die Spookbus also gives you the opportunity to visit Church Square at night, where you can experience a glimpse of the old Capitol Theatre (now a parking garage with a star-studded roof, a gallery and a stage), while hearing the story about the Church Street bomb victims. Another (still standing) haunted theatre, is the Breytenbach Theatre. Established as a German community hall, it was later used as a temporary hospital during the flu epidemic in 1918. The building was eventually turned into the Breytenbach Theatre, which staged its first production in 1958. Today actors share the stage with Nurse Heather who is always looking for children to assist, asking: “Where are my children.”

Of course, a ghost tour is not justifiable without a cemetery thrown into the itinerary. The Rebecca Cemetery is home to many, spirits and the ideal end to an informative evening about Pretoria’s heydays, the people who lived and worked here and those who can’t let go. Pretoria is home to a couple of other ghosts too. Alfie, the Victoria Hotel (Pretoria’s oldest hotel, originally known as the Hollandia), is quite mischievous. He is also not this hotel’s only resident ghost. An old, grey lady often brushes shoulders with guests on the hotel’s majestic staircase. Pretoria Railway Station is also home to a soldier from the Anglo-Boer War, who has been seen roaming the area. Whether you’re curious about Pretoria’s history or its ghosts, this might be the adventure you are looking for. The next production takes place in February and bookings can be made online. 1 www.spookbus.co.za

eeling a chill as something passes me at Pretoria’s second oldest hotel or shrieking at the sound of inexplicable footsteps at Erasmus House is not exactly my idea of fun. Still, to many this is a whole new level of adventure. You also needn’t go far to find this excitement, as Pretoria has its own ghost production on wheels, which makes for some spine-tingling experiences with stories that will keep you up at night and unexpected sound effects that catch you by surprise.

arts&culture TOSSING COINS AT THE SA MINT MUSEUM

D

eciding to revamp a museum is a big decision. Keeping a facility that focuses on the past relevant and interesting to younger generations that are tech savvy, is challenging. Tumi Tsehlo, MD of the South African Mint, says: “…The decision to modernise was to pique their interest whilst not losing the essence of visiting a museum. The new spatial layout, design and energy running through the new space will greatly enhance the overall experience of a visit for both parents and children.” Following the history of the mint through the museum is fascinating. At the entrance stands a large metal coil, representing the start of a tour through the newly revamped South African Mint Museum. The museum is clutter free with clean lines and natural colours, with a simplicity that suits its purpose. The historical part of the museum is home to Oom Paul, the original minting press that was named after the then President Paul Kruger, leader of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek. This press – one of the oldest presses in the world and originally steam operated – was built in 1891, ordered by Paul Kruger to use in the first mint that was established in Pretoria in 1892. It has been modified over the years to work off electricity, has minted over 8 million coins (including the legendary Kruger millions) and can still be seen in action at the museum. The very first Krugerrand was also pressed by Oom Paul.

28

The museum’s exhibits include collections of coins belonging to different historical eras – some minted over the century by the Hello Pretoria • January 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Mint in its different avatars. These include the Naked Pound (known as the Kaalpond in Afrikaans) and the Veldpond, which were both pressed during the Second Anglo-Boer War. During this time, the Boers experienced a shortage of gold coins and could not buy food and provisions for their troops. Evidently, they used gold “blanks” that were removed from the ZAR Mint, which became known as kaalponde. After these had run out in 1902, the government gave permission for gold pounds to be minted. An improvised mint was set up in Pilgrim’s Rest and the facilities were very basic, situated in the abandoned workshops of the Transvaal Gold Mining Estate. The mint was called Staatsmunt te Velde (State Mint in the Field) and here the Veldpond, which many consider the holy grail of South African coins, was minted. The South African Mint Museum has a lot of information on these coins, but also the more recent coins including how they are made, the art of coin design and the security secrets behind circulation coins. They also offer a vast collection of world-famous collectable coins. Visiting this museum should definitely be on your bucket list for this year! ARTS AND CULTURE HOTSPOTS

Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It is based on the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer. It was premiered by the Prague Italian opera at the Teatro di Praga (now called the Estates Theatre) on 29 October 1787. Da Ponte's libretto was billed, like many of its time, as dramma giocoso, a term that denotes a mixing of serious and comic action. Mozart entered the work into his catalogue as an opera buffa. Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements. A staple of the standard operatic repertoire, Don Giovanni is currently tenth on the Opera base list of the most-performed operas worldwide. When we think of conferencing, generally the first things that will come to mind are sterile looking boardrooms or conference rooms striped with desks and chairs. Whilst some may argue that fewer distractions will result in greater productivity, others may counter that bland environments don’t inspire much in terms of creativity and strategic thought. A possible compromise on this is to consider a venue that is more informal, possibly outdoors or in the bush which provides the benefit of adequate conferencing facilities coupled with inspiration from wildlife and nature.

Born, bred and based in Pretoria, The Capitals - alongside their already dedicated Pretoria fan base - have had a very successful 2018, opening for renowned acts Francois van Coke and Jack Parow on several occasions. The band has also played alongside Gangs of Ballet, Matthew Mole and Desmond and the Tutus, but their focus still remains the audience’s enjoyment, regardless of the location or size of the crowd. Having recently announced their national December tour we just had to sit down with this hot and happening band to find out more. @thecapitalsofficial D @thecapitals E @thecapitalsofficial

Hello Pretoria • January 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

How did The Capitals start? Two friends sitting down one lazy afternoon; the conversation went like this "Dude... how cool would it be to start a band?" "Dude, let’s do it". And the band was started. What inspired the band’s love for music? We all have a love for music and different genres at that, and I think it definitely contributes to our flavour as well as our overall love seeing as we're discovering new music from one another all the time. What song best describes the band?  Wow, glad you picked an easy question... haha, Ummm definitely I want it that way by the backstreet boys... Not lyrically but we give a killer in-car rendition. Top three spots for gigs in Pretoria? Deep Roots, Aandklas, Arcade Empire. 1 www.deeproots.co.za E @ArcadeEmpire E @AandklasPta

If The Capitals could collaborate with any famous musician who would it be? It would definitely depend on the song hey. I mean we have ideas for collabs with rap and hip hop artists and some of the amazing female vocal artists we have in SA, but it'll all come down to timing and where the songs take us. What can we expect to see from the band in the future?  Albums, tours and some of the best live shows you will ever experience. We're working so hard on putting together an amazing live show. Stay tuned. Do you have any pre-show rituals? Conrad loves his vocal exercises, Wesley loves his beer, Ric loves jamming super hard to the band, I think it psyches him up, and I'm not too sure what Seth does... hmm but other than that, a hearty meal together is always good.

The Capitals

What’s the most difficult part of starting a career in the music industry? Winning peoples trust, winning their loyalty, and getting them to support as well just networking with promoters and other industry people. It takes time to grow relationships and trust. I think trust is the biggest thing in our industry.
