I

know we’ve had a mild winter so far but I wouldn’t get too comfortable as we still have July and August to get through before the first buds of spring arrive. Don’t let the cold Highveld chill get you down though, as my team and I are on hand to recommend the very best entertainment, dining, shopping and lifestyle destinations in the Jacaranda City. If you’ve decided to stay in and have a little snuggle time with that special someone in your life, then why not experiment with an indoor picnic? Check out page 6 for our top tips on how to create the perfect and most romantic feast by the fire, which will not only keep you warm but who knows, might even encourage a little extra romance! On the cover this month we sit down with Pretoria based starlet and self-confessed drama queen, Leah to hear about her rapid rise to success in the entertainment business. We’re also giving away a copy of her new DVD, Susters so check out pages 8 and 9 for entry

details. Our restaurant of the month is Baobab Café and Grill in Menlyn Park Shopping Centre. This contemporary African themed restaurant will awaken your gastronomic senses. From light meals and salads to decadent meat and fish dishes, you are more than likely to find something that will tickle your taste buds. Market madness pretty much started in Pretoria long before the Jozi’s and Capetonians caught onto the trend. So, if you manage to catch one of the few warm winter days then why not visit one of the outdoor markets we recommend on page 21? One huge advantage of Gauteng’s winter season must be the clear evening skies and what better way to appreciate Pretoria’s twilight then with an evening under the stars. Check out our top nightlife spots with a view for an ideal date night, that long-awaited proposal or just a casual ice-cream eating/ cappuccino drinking pit stop. Whatever you decide to do this July please remember to keep warm (even if that means calling up an old bae and snuggling by the fire). I find that the best way to keep warm in the chilly months is by lighting a fire in your soul through adventure or new experiences! I hope you enjoy reading on. Best,

Perfect

THE PICNIC WITH A TWIST.

Turn up the heat without leaving the house this winter! If you’re looking to do something a little different for date night this winter, but you also don’t feel like leaving the house, then we just might have the thing for you. Ever heard of an indoor picnic? Well if not, then let us fill you in on your new fave way to spend those chilly days or nights. It’s perfect for an ultra-romantic evening or if you’re not into all the cheese (pun intended) you can also tone it down for a fun and casual date night

On the side: a variety of small snacks such as pickled onions, gherkins, cold meats, grapes and anything else you fancy as an accompaniment. How to: Rub the pot down with a clove of garlic. Add 1 cup of wine (per 500g of cheese) to the pot. Do not let the wine come to a boil. Grate your cheese. Coat your grated cheese with cornstarch (this allows the cheese to mix well with the wine).

TIP: Remove an item of clothing every time you drop something in the fondue pot.

How to: Lather two Marie biscuits with a generous amount of Nutella. Stick a cocktail stick through a marshmallow and grill it over a flame until it’s golden. Remove the marshmallow and place it in between the two Marie biscuits. Squash it all together and enjoy!

The setting Create that ‘wow’ effect for your partner! Clear your living room floor area by moving the furniture out of the way and get rid of any breakables. Set down your softest blanket in the center of the room and add a few cushions to sit on. If you have a low table, put it the middle. Sprinkle rose petals around

the area and light some candles. To set the scene, put up fairy lights on the wall or on the floor around where you will be sitting. Don’t be afraid to go over the top. The more romantic the room feels, the better! Pinterest is your friend! Place all your goodies on the blanket before your partner arrives and enjoy an evening at home you won’t forget.

Cheese fondue how to: You will need: A bottle of white wine, fresh baguette bread, cheese (a 50/50 mix of Gruyère and Emmentaler), a clove of garlic, cornstarch, lemon juice and a fondue set. If you don’t have a fondue set, you can make your fondue on the stove, but you will have to go back and re-heat it occasionally if the cheese starts to stiffen.

Add the cornstarch-coated cheese a handful at a time until melted into the wine and mix. Add a splash of lemon juice.

A

n indoor picnic obviously requires fantastic food (and the perfect company of course). The best approach to picnic food is having a variety of goodies to snack on over a period of time. You don’t want to spend the evening in the kitchen, so we suggest cheese and wine as the order of the day. Ditch the boring cheese platter though and try out a cheese fondue instead.

Villieria

AN URBAN COMMUNITY WITH RURAL HEARTS

Villieria forms part of the socalled Moot area, North-East of Pretoria’s CBD. It is an old neighbourhood with generously sized properties and lush gardens. Being deprived of the modern, double story homes of Brooklyn and Waterkloof is what makes it so unique.

She was born in Pretoria, grew up in Polokwane and returned to the Jacaranda City 6 years ago. “It’s a beautiful city with many hidden places that are very

A

rural feel lingers in the air, with restaurants and shops that take you back to Sundays on grandma’s porch. Villieria is filled with antique shops, many of which form part of the Antique Route 6, including Bellbottoms, Retro Rabbit and LFR Antiques. Owl Books is also part of the Antique Route, situated on the corner of Pierneef Street and 30th Avenue. They boast second hand, rare books at reasonable prices. Retro Rabbit not only stocks upcycled furniture, they also run a successful community project, where they train keen individuals to make furniture and wood items from scratch. Labyrinth House, also on Route 6 in the Pierneef Centre, has an interesting take on things. They offer their antiques as props for film sets, events and weddings on a rental basis, while other items are for sale. 5 www.antiqueroute6pretoria.co.za While exploring Villieria and Route 6, you’re bound to crave a cup of coffee at some point. Grounded at Echo is a popular coffee shop in the area with a brand that believes that coffee was made to share, to inspire conversation and to grow community. Their menu is very considerate, providing low carb, no cane sugar, gluten-free and vegetarian options. GroundedWORK, a coworking space, is the second expression of Grounded at Echo. It offers a space where the inspiring conversations

special,” Alicia Redlinghuys acclaims. that happened at Grounded Coffee could be brought to life through collaboration, idea sharing and most of all productivity. With 14 hot seats, a boardroom, printing, copying and scanning facilities, a coffee bar stocked with all the Grounded coffee favourites, and simplistic, industrial interiors, GroundedWORK is the perfect space to get creative juices flowing and jobs done. 5 www.groundedat.co.za Villieria is also home to the Pierneef Theatre where you can watch plays and musical performances of all kinds. Toni’s Pizza is a favourite among locals, serving pizzas with a gourmet twist. Other popular restaurants include Burger Bistro and Oppiplaas. The latter is a restaurant with a nursery and an antique shop – the perfect Saturday family outing. 5 www.pierneefteater.co.za 5 www.tonipizza.co.za 5 www.burgerbistro.co.za 5 www.www.oppiplaas.co.za

Villieria may not have double story homes, but its community is rich. They care for each other and uplift their neighbours – something, not every neighbourhood can say.

Alicia works at the popular Moonshot Café in Menlyn Corporate Park while living in Lynnwood. “I like my neighbourhood,” she says. “The people are friendly and they look after each other.” Lynnwood and Brooklyn’s streets are some of the things she loves about Pretoria. She enjoys driving around in the city, hunting for lookout points and pretty streets. Autumn is her favourite season in the city. “Early mornings are beautiful and it calms your soul.” 5 www.moonshotcafe.co.za For the discerning out of towner, her suggestions would be to eat at one of The Village’s restaurants, to hike in one of the city’s many nature reserves like the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve and to visit the Boeremark. She also says that when you visit Pretoria, you can’t leave without having a lamb pita from Smaak in Hazelwood. 5 www.smaakbydough.com According to Alicia, winter evenings in Pretoria are well spent at Blos as they have some of the best curries in town. Another favourite restaurant of hers is The Hillside Tavern. 5 www.bloscafe.co.za 5 www.hillsidetavern.co.za Her chosen spot for shopping is Woodlands Mall and Atterbury Value Mart is where she hunts for bargains. Her favourite Pretoria shops include Papaya, Bellbottoms, The Space, Santa’s Warehouse and Freedom of Movement and she gets her caffeine fix at either Seattle Coffee in Brooklyn Mall, Grounded at Echo or Der Zucker Backer. 5 www.woodlandsboulevard.co.za 5 www.atterburyvaluemart.co.za Hello Pretoria • July 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Leah

Drama Queen & Proud

M

eet Leah, the singer, dancer and actress who will greet you with a big smile and endeavour to remember your name as best she can. We loved her instantly the moment she said that. You meet all kinds of people doing what we do and believe us when we tell you that in the entertainment business, few people take the time to remember your name these days – let alone greet you with such warmth. Here’s hoping that never changes for the young lady with the world at her feet.

And soon everyone will know her name too. Leah who starred opposite Bobby van Jaarsveld in the smash-hit Afrikaans musical film, “As Jy Sing” has also released a debut album called Wonderwerk and is feverishly plotting her next move. Rumour has it there is another album in the works. So how did the kid who thought she’d be a mermaid when she was a little girl get here?

Words Carly Ritz Images Willem Botha

After obtaining her BComm Law degree from the University of Stellenbosch she went on to graduate from the esteemed Waterfront Theatre School with an International Diploma in Musical Theatre. “I am So glad that I got to study the arts, it taught me my discipline and work ethic and was an amazing foundation to start my career. I am currently living my dream.” While Leah has grown up around various musical genres and performers thanks to her parents love and interest in music, she touts Afrikaans singer Laurika Rauch as one of her top local influences. Looking further abroad she has been inspired by the likes of Celine Dion and John Mayer. She also wouldn’t mind having Taylor Swift as her best friend she laughs. But today she offers a unique voice born out of raw talent with an enormous amount of hard work. Leah constantly challenges and pushes herself to be the best she can. Her talents began to surface at a young age. She started ballet when she was three or four and only stopped dancing late in high school only to pick it up again at Theatre

School. Leah also took piano and singing lessons from the age of ten and well the singing has just not stopped.

“My mom has always called me her drama queen and I think she was pretty on point with that!” The impact of her mother in her life is clear and Leah adds. “My mom taught me that there will always be someone better, prettier, smarter and more talented than you. But that’s OK. You can’t always win. Just be yourself. If you are your own unique self, there is no competition” While she loves what she does, Leah is not naïve to the challenges of the local entertainment industry. “Male singers have traditionally dominated the music industry, so sometimes women are expected to prove themselves a tad more. But I believe there is a place in this industry for all of us, everyone deserves a chance. A young blonde woman has the tendency to be misjudged, but I am more than just my hair! And I am not a walkover.” As for career highlights? “I am fortunate to have many! Being on the Afrikaans Is Groot stage twice, holding my first album in my hands, singing for 25000 people at Innibos, having a lead role in a movie (Susters) being the new Boer Soek ‘n Vrou presenter, winning my first award and just being able to entertain people... I am indeed beyond blessed!” What can we expect next for Leah? The musician is currently working on a new album. “I am very excited to be more involved in the creative process with this one” and then, of course, fans can look forward to shows, shows and more shows Any advice for aspiring female artists? “Be prepared to work the hardest you have ever worked before. This industry is not glamorous, it is cutthroat, competitive and if you don’t have 120% passion, it’s going to be even tougher. Do it for the right reasons, believe in yourself and don’t give up. Sometimes you will just have to stick your pride in your pocket and go for it!”

....

As you step into the Baobab Café and Grill in Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, your eyes are immediately averted to the giant statues watching over you as you walk into the contemporary African themed restaurant. While it is set in a vast space, you instantly feel the warm welcome of the staff.

W

ith a large variety of dishes to choose from, one wonders where to begin. From light meals and salads to meat or fishes dishes, you are more than likely to find something that will tickle your taste buds. What would we recommend? Well, that’s a difficult question! Every dish on the menu is prepared to perfection and will leave you feeling more than satisfied. However, having said that, we do have a few meals that have made the top of our lists.

14

If you’re in the mood for a lighter meal, we would suggest the grilled chicken quesadilla ,which is a toasted flour tortilla filled with grilled chicken, sun-dried tomato and cheddar cheese, or the sushi that is always fresh and melts in your mouth. The Biltong and Hello Pretoria • July 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Unwinding at

.....................................

Baobab Café & Grill ...................................................... Mushroom soup is perfect for a cold winter’s day. As for a more hearty meal, we would suggest the bone marrow rib eye or the shisa nyama which is half a chicken, sort rib and boerewors flame grilled the traditional way. In the mood for a seafood style dish? While you can never go wrong with the grilled calamari which is topped with delicious lemon butter and served with Tartar sauce, Baobab Café and Grill have recently introduced the Red Snapper as their line fish option which is also served with a lemon butter sauce and has been highly welcomed by their customers. After such a delicious meal, did we still have space for dessert? There is always space for dessert in our world! The best on the menu is Baobab’s chocolate mousse which they describe as “extremely addictive” – we agree! The cheesecake is another winner to be honest and it is presented so beautifully that you just can’t wait to stick your spoon into it. While the food and the service is highly rated in our books, we are major fans of

the earthy yet modern, Pan African décor of the establishment. Shades of creams and tans as well as browns are seen throughout with subtle hints of greenery from rows of potted plants and succulents that are tastefully dispersed throughout the restaurant. This elegant and modern décor flows through both the bottom floor and first floor of the restaurant. If you are looking to host a more intimate dinner party, there is even a private room available. A fabulous place to indulge in cocktails with your girlfriends for lunch; watch the sunset over Pretoria or have a delectable dinner and bottle of wine in the evening. We can’t wait to go back. t was Tufan’s wife who came up with the name of the Gauteng based establishment; and while Kream is an ode to the quintessential ingredient, it’s more than the spelling that sets it apart. Offering patrons an experience that is exclusive yet affordable, the team at Kream continually experiment with the menu to bring a mixture of South African influenced international dishes to the city of Tshwane and Johannesburg. Showcasing the “kream” of the crop when it comes to local produce, Tufan is an advocate for the decadent fillet bone marrow, accompanied by a classic French Bordelaise sauce. Eclectic and inviting, the space is adorned with art and provides patrons with a trendy and tasteful environment in which to entice their taste buds. Believing that most people can cook at home if they really want to, Tufan is passionate about the business of experience, of which food is a fundamental element. When people choose to dine at Kream, Tufan wants to

afford them an unforgettable experience, from the moment they walk through the door. His staff exude an infectious positive energy, which is a key element to the experience, but also his greatest challenge as a Restaurateur.

potato, sour cream and a melody of miniature vegetables. For desert visitors can look forward to dishes like a chocolate brownie with a cream cheese frosting, chocolate ganache and chocolate drops, vanilla panacotta with a lavender syrup or a mascarpone and white chocolate cheesecake with charred honey, peaches and a nut crumb.

The 28-year old, self-trained Executive Chef, Jesse Dietrich, is not just another pretty face. Since she started at Roodevalley Faircity Hotel, she has been working hard on compiling and finalising the new menu, which is a combination of modern-day plating and country style. The previous a la carte menu was, as she calls it, pubby and grubby, where the new menu leans more toward fine dining with a country twist. Menu items include a seafood dish, which is naturally a favourite for Chef Jesse, lamb shank, which promises to be very popular, and rump with baked

With Roodevalley Faircity Hotel catering for a lot of conferences, the restaurant serves buffets that have guests returning for more (the ostrich casserole is a favourite). They also do a monthly harvest table, which is a country themed setup where guests get to enjoy the outdoors while indulging in some fine cuisine. They are open to walk-ins, so a Saturday brunch or a Sunday picnic (where they stock your basket) is definitely something to add to your Pretoria bucket list. According to Chef Lyle, Roodevalley Faircity Hotel has a lot of potential. He has been in

the industry for about 6 years, initially working for Sun International and now spreading his wings with Faircity. Being the Pastry Chef, he’s mastered the art of lamingtons to the tee. You cannot leave the hotel without tasting these. Sous Chef, Raymond Ramanaka, has been in the hospitality industry for 8 years, mainly working in restaurants and hotels. He says that working at a lodge like Roodevalley is an exciting challenge. He enjoys experimenting with Thai cuisine and makes a mean chicken curry, combined with three different salsas – a carrot and pineapple salsa, tomato and onion salsa and tzatziki.

Market madness pretty much started in Pretoria long before the Jozi’s and Capetonians caught onto the trend. So if you’re in a market kind of mood, try these:

Words Carly Ritz

Irene Market: If you live in Pretoria and you haven’t been to the Irene Market at the Big Red Barn then shame on you. Famous for its arts and crafts, the market has been around since 1989. Church Square

DON’T BE A SQUARE

Church Square in central Pretoria, the site of the city’s first church was built in 1855. Used as a marketplace and sports field back in the day, today it’s an iconic part of the city and one of the must-see places to visit in Gauteng. The square is surrounded by historical buildings in varying neo-classical architectural styles, including the impressive Palace of Justice where former president Nelson Mandela and several of his comrades were tried and charged for treason during the infamous Rivonia Trial, the Old Capitol Theatre and the Ou Raadsaal (Old Government) building. Right, now that you know a bit more about your city, you should eat something at one of the cool spots nearby.

Light Gazing in Pretoria Living in a city definitely has its perks and one of them is the city lights. Pretoria flaunts numerous light gazing spots. Try these for a proper date night, that long-planned proposal, an ice-cream-eating/cappuccino-drinking spot or just a nostalgia trigger.

FORT KLAPPERKOP

FORTI GRILL & BAR

HOTEL 224

From here you have a 180-degree view of the city, including the Union Buildings. Start the evening with sundowners among zebra and antelope and stay until late, while you watch the city’s lights illuminate. Fort Klapperkop has a number of places where you can park to enjoy the view and makes it very easy for a novice in romance.

Situated on the top floor of the Sun Time Square Casino, this restaurant boasts some of the best views over Pretoria East. With its lovely outdoor patio, which is almost as big as inside and a rooflike atmosphere, there is more than enough space to enjoy a night out watching the city lights. Combine that with a little something from their food, wine and cigar menu and you’re sorted.

If you are looking for a room with a view, Hotel 224 is definitely the place to stay. Although the hotel is only rated 3-star, its views are undoubtedly 5-star. If you’re lucky, you might even have a room from which you can spot the Union Buildings. It also boasts conference venues with lovely views over the CBD. An evening event in one of these venues won’t need much decoration.

Upon entering our Oranje suite, our private butler Alisha welcomed us with open arms, even claiming that there is a complimentary laundry service, 24-hour room service and she would be available at 2 am for an extra glass of bubbles. This pays tribute to the dedicated teams of personnel and their heartfelt service. You are instantly saluted as you enter the train and the ultimate goal for each and every staff member is customer satisfaction. Your glass is never hollo, and your every culinary desire is attainable.

A romance with the Cape ROVOS RAIL- The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step onto the Pride of Africa. Most tourists travel South Africa by car or plane, however, this once in a lifetime option is an alternative like no other. They call themselves the best luxur y train in the world and after experiencing the trip from Pretoria to Cape Town; it’s easy to understand why.

V

iews and dreamy dining settings. It’s almost impossible to put this bucket list adventure into words…If you’re not into roughing it and prefer fine dining on a private railway station, then this is just for you. Sophistication and refinement permeate through the locomotive as you embark on the train’s front steps. It’s the definition of old-world charm, a utopian journey, romantic and fanciful, it feels as if you’re stepping into another realm. A world, which Rohan Vos created in 1985. Rohan and his wife Anthea took up a last-minute invitation on a train trip to Magaliesburg which inspired his passion. That same year, Rohan bought a coach or two at an auction. In 1986 he was granted permission to run his first train that was lovingly named after his child, Bianca.

28

The highlight of the trip is you will get to meet the mastermind behind the pride of Africa. Rohan Vos, an ardent advocate, waves you goodbye as you leave Pretoria station and shakes your hand as you arrive in Cape Town. A testament to how committed and impassioned he is to his luxurious project. Rohan also reads every single feedback letter after each trip and it is this tenacity and fervour that lends itself to the company’s success. Once you disembark on the 1600km three-day journey prepare to be dazzled. You’ll enter your unexpectedly capacious suite and find the most majestic views as you trundle towards the scenic Cape. The deluxe rooms have everything you could ever lust after, however rather encouraging; there isn’t any Wi-Fi available. Initially rather startled by the lack of connectivity, it’s a wonderful consent to stare out into the Cape wine lands with a glass of Thelema or connect with like-minded people whilst revelling in the Karoo’s desert landscape. If you want to be sociable there are open central areas, like the lounge and bar. The train carries a maximum of 72 guests per trip, so it’s never overcrowded. The train is neither brash nor gaudy but rather opulent whilst still retaining comfort, exuding worldliness and good taste. The g-ds certainly delivered with this once in a lifetime adventure. Tips: - Book a Deluxe suite, it's spacious at 10 square metres, has a double bed, aircon, a shower and toilet. - The price is all inclusive of food and beverages. - There are daily off train excursions which are a must do! The Big Hole in Kimberley, Diamond Mine Museum and a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein. - Don’t miss high tea, daily at 16h30. - During the day the dress code is smart casual but be sure to pack formal evening wear for the dinners. 5 www.rovos.com t @rovosrailtours f Rovos Rail  @rovosrail

DE HOOP NATURE RESERVE you’ll have a whale of a time

T

his location represents biodiversity in South Africa and what started as a farm in the 1700s has turned into a haven. Just a 3-hour drive from Cape Town, it’s a little slice of paradise in the Cape. The smell of limestone fynbos infuses every inch of this nature sanctuary and with over 260 bird species and coastal protected areas, it's one of the only few places in the country that offers such diversity. Its Cape Natures flagship nature reserve and should without a doubt be on your “if only” list. The first thing you’ll revel in is the lovely sense of space and the grand, dense foliage of the Millwood trees that lie before you. It's mother nature in all her glory, and with views overlooking the dune systems and imposing caves, you’ll realise this is life as it was intended to be. You’ll find life on the edge of the water where it congregates with the land and enthuse in the richness of the sandy beaches, the wildlife roaming freely, dune ecosystems and diverse marine wildlife. It is this that makes this space so special, especially if you visit during whale season.

But if you want something really special we recommend the Melkkamer Manor because of its isolation. This remote, old stone manor house comprises of four magnificently appointed bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. The house is fully equipped for self-catering and has a beautiful spacious kitchen, a cosy lounge and charming dining room and you can have a braai under the cascading trees. You’ll have total privacy as the Opstal area is a 40min drive away or you can just hop in a boat to the restaurant which serves spectacular rustic farm-style cuisine and the finest wines from the Cape wine lands. If you’re into adventure this is the ideal location.

THIS IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND: Interpretive marine walk R200pp (duration: +-2 hours) A walking trail exploring coastal rock pools and sandy beaches while a qualified guide points out interesting marine life forms. Also, a great way to experience the Southern Right Whales in the bay between June and December. Guided eco boat cruise R350pp (duration: 2 – 3 hours) Explore the Vlei and enjoy bird, game, otter and even porcupine sightings with an ecocruise experience. Cruises are held daily at 11 am and 3 pm during summer. There are daily morning and evening cruises. Night Sky Experience R95pp (duration: 1 hour) Experience the magnificent stars and constellations that the clear De Hoop night sky has to offer. Learn about the

various star signs and other interesting facts about the sky. Endangered Cape Vultures at Potberg R550 per person (a picnic backpack is included in the rate) Hike up the Trail (Approximately 1 hour) to view the Cape Vultures near their breeding colony. On reaching a well-planned vantage point - the vulture deck – you will see the vultures circling in the sky above the rocky gorge where they nest. 5 www.dehoopcollection.com t @dehoopreserve f DeHoopCollection 

All Africa at

Protea Hotel Hatfield

Not every hotel succeeds in understanding their guests’ physical and emotional needs, but Protea Hotel Pretoria Hatfield has done it.

Poppy and Chef Bull, the hotels' food and beverage manager and head chef, sit in front of me on a leather couch with the widest of smiles. Among African themed wallpaper and calabash-shaped lights, Poppy enthusiastically states: “It’s Africa. If you go to that Africa corner you get … chicken feet, malamogodi (tripe)… [we] accommodate everybody.” She’s referring to the restaurant’s Africa corner, where a buffet with a spread of African dishes is served to both in-house and to conferencing guests on a daily basis.

Chef Bull prides himself in providing conference goers with some of the best African-themed food and ensures that not one day’s meal is the same. His passion is to work Hello Pretoria • July 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

with people and to deal with guests. “I know they can be difficult sometimes, but that is why we are here. To make the guests happy,” he says. The 106-seater Africa Restaurant and Bar, the hotel’s in-house restaurant, is used for both lunch and dinner during conferences and has an inviting feel to it. It offers daily buffets, as well as a recently added a la carte menu and there is also the more limited bar menu that often tickles the walk-ins’ fancy. The African theme is weaved well into the finer details at the restaurant, presenting as trendy and aesthetically appealing. The 204-room hotel, situated in Burnett Street, Hatfield, boasts five conference rooms, of which two are brand new, larger venues that will attract much more business to the destination. The original three conference venues can seat up to 10, 20 and 70 people respectively and the newly built venues will be able to accommodate 60 and 108 people respectively, which evidently boasts a whole new level of conferencing options at the hotel. The new conferencing facilities include a lot of open spaces, trendy interior and lovely views over the ever-developing Hatfield, even

motivating the odd evening conference. Tea breaks are normally served just outside of the conference venues, with the venue on the 7th floor specifically boasting a lovely outdoor section for this purpose. Government conferencing packages start at R365 per person at the Protea Hotel Hatfield, where general conferencing packages cost R400 per person. The packages include lunch, one soft drink and three tea breaks per day. Weekdays are filled with conference delegates at the hotel, where weekends are more laidback with locals popping in from Burnett Street for a quick draft or two. With the Protea Hotel Pretoria Hatfield being so centrally located, it attracts quite a lot of government business, as well as regular guests from the University of Pretoria. It’s a hotel for everyone, making guests feel at home with local themes and colours and accommodating conference goers with impressive conferencing facilities. 1141 Burnett St, Hatfield, Pretoria 1 012 364 0300 5 www.marriott.com
