Hello Pretoria! When the cool breeze in the air softly brushes my cheeks, I know winter has come. There’s a freshness in the air that only South Africans can understand. Pretoria’s winter sun gives me a good feeling. So does our June issue! In June, we celebrate our youth and in particular, Pretoria’s youth. I’ve noticed how we are so quick to judge the youth of today, without realising how things have changed and how they inevitably had to evolve with the times. Millennials and Generation Z grew up with technology and instant gratification and even though this has changed the way they think, it might actually be just what we need in Pretoria, South Africa and the world. In this issue, we chat to Tuks FM’s Max M’membe about her generation and her role as the Drive Show presenter. We meet a few Pretoria-based photographers who use their Millennial creativity wherever they go and Bettina, our photographer for this issue plays around with pictures at Time Square. We also share some valuable fishing opportunities with you for some father-son bonding time as Father’s Day is another thing to celebrate this month. After a couple of really interesting conversations with our local youth, I realised how important it is for the older generations to educate themselves on topics that influence our youth. Social media, for one, is a great tool to use, but can be very dangerous at the same time. It frightens me when I see how many people appear almost indifferent about the changes in the world – be it technology, social media, our environment or our youth. In June we have a wonderful book to give away: Emma Sadleir and Lizzie Harrison’s Selfies, Sexts and Smartphones. This is the teenager’s online survival guide, but also the parent’s introduction to what is actually happening in the social media sphere. We have three copies to give away, so be sure to enter the competition! Speaking of interesting conversations – read more about George Kusche, our very own long-distance athlete who now resides in America, as well as Nicola Engelbrecht, a local Affie who shares her generation’s way of thinking with us. A band that has been an inspiration to me when it comes to influencing the youth, is Kaleidoskoop. They lived in Pretoria for 6 years and recently moved back to Cape Town, but we luckily caught them at Lynnwood Bridge. They recently launched the 4th music video from their latest album with a song called Fakkels. Read more about it in our Backchat. I truly hope that you will enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it. We definitely feel inspired by our youth. P.S. To all the fathers out there – Happy Father’s Day! Except for the huge responsibility you have, being a father is a privilege and having a dad who is involved and loving is a blessing.

MAX M’MEMBE A Millennial’s take on Millennials

T

uks FM’s Drive Show’s presenter, Max M’membe falls under Generation Z, but as she went to school much earlier and grew up with kids two years older than her, she sees herself as a Millennial. Max has been working at Tuks FM for just over a year. She started of as a junior presenter and even at her young age she learnt that hard work pays off as she is currently the head of the presenting department. Tuks FM’s audience includes listeners between the ages of 18 and 24, which means their presenters are also young. “Who better to speak to an audience than people from it?” The ‘why not?’ generation Max feels that she is part of a generation that pushes boundaries and don’t follow ‘old people’s’ rules. Even a lot of the things they

do at Tuks FM might cause other stations to roll their eyes and be like: “You just don’t do that.” She says: “Why not?” Tuks FM did a trip to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa last year, but this was no ordinary visit. They went there with a group of vision impaired kids. People wonder why you would take someone who couldn’t see to a zoo, but they just thought: “Why not?” Tuks FM wants to continue with this project, but also wants it to branch out into different things. Last year they did radio for those who can’t see; this year they’re pushing their boundaries even further and doing radio for those who can’t hear. “It’s going to be very challenging, but that creativity and innovative power that young people have make us believe that we can make it work.” I think we (Millennials) have got a sense of optimism that the other generations don’t have and just

Passion and Poise Max is currently 3rd year LLB while also maintaining her radio presence. “I know, chalk and cheese! When you’re doing something that you’re really passionate about, it doesn’t even feel like work. It’s tough, but a good kind of tough.” She’s also not one for one job only. “I’m hoping to do as much in radio as I can, but on the law side I would love to go into Environmental Law, just because our environment is such a beautiful and amazing resource and everything that we have stems from it. Unfortunately, a lot of problems have been caused and a lot of things have gone wrong, but I think it is up to the younger generation to take it upon ourselves to fix those issues. I think our generation understands that we have problems and even though we didn’t create them, we have the knowledge and the skills to fix them.” Max started working in radio specifically to have a platform to speak about things that matter. “It’s always something that I’m conscious about – the platform that I have and the influence that I have; being able to handle topical issues.”

Hatfield-vibes “Hatfield is almost a town of its own. It’s got its own dynamic. I always have a laugh with my mom as Hatfield-time is not normal time. It will be one o’clock in the morning and you’ll be like: ‘I’m going to McDonalds’. Anywhere else that’s absurd. Everyone in Hatfield knows each other, so it’s its own little community. I’d hang on to it as long as I could. It’s such a vibrant and energetic place.” Your life is prep Doing life, law and radio can’t be an easy juggle. “I always say to people and the people in my department that your life is prep and your life is content. Anything you’re speaking about or going through, someone in our audience has probably also gone through, so never ignore things. If you’re aware and conscious of your own life, it makes it much easier.” According to Max, anything academic is a relevant topic. “That is the reason most of us are here. It’s a challenge and I have realised that degrees are heavily underrated. What it takes to get educated – not only the cost of it, but the stress it puts on your mind and your body and everything else – it’s quite a lot. So, I think anything school-related is always relevant. And then just pop-culture in general, because I think we’re influenced so much by it that it becomes one of the integral parts of our lives.” Traveller by heart She’s a keen believer in exposing yourself to different things, different ideas and different ways of living. “I was raised to really believe

a very creative outlook. A lot of people say Millennials are lazy and they don’t want to do things the right way, but I just think that we’re so optimistic and creative that we know that there are easier and better ways to do things.”

in the power of exposure and seeing different things, so my family and I save and work really hard to at least ensure that we can do one external trip apart from Zambia every year. I’m now trying to get myself to Germany this June Holiday.” She says travelling is definitely a Millennial goal. “We are so curious about what’s out there, what we can do and how we can explore. We’re very open-minded as a generation.” The future of influencers “I think it is the season of influencers, but I also think it will evolve into something else. Just as we had celebrities being the main thing and now influencers being the main thing, I definitely think something else is going to come up and that’s just the way it works.” Max believes that with everyone being so creative in this generation, things might even evolve more quickly. Social Media “It’s definitely the instant ones. It’s Instagram, Twitter, sometimes Snapchat and then obviously Whatsapp is the primary mode of communication. Our parents are on Facebook, so we keep all our PG13 stuff on Facebook, but when you go out, you put it on Instagram, because you know your mom’s not there.” Admitting is key “Some of the rumours about us, like us being entitled and being a little lazy and despondent – those things are sometimes true. I do think we need to have a greater sense of gratefulness; acknowledging where we come from and not only acknowledge it but celebrate it – our history and our past and what previous generations have done for us.” To a degree she agrees with the term instant gratification that has been linked to Millennials. “Just because everything else in our world is instant. So much happens in our world and we consume so much information and everything’s so quick – if I want to say something, I Tweet it and it’s gone.” Millennials for change Max says Millennials have an attitude of trying anything. “If it works, it works and if it doesn’t you learn and that’s okay.” She believes Millennials and Generation Z could be the generations that have the biggest impact overall and we are inclined to believe it too.

GENERATION Free, but lonely

Generation Z might be the generation that claims to be free, but are they really? In fact, according to sources, this generation is the loneliest generation ever.

8

The internet has changed a lot when it comes to life and the people living it. It all started with the Millennials, described as self-orientated individuals. As the internet grew, the world became smaller and generations evolved. Today, generation Z is online all the time, literally addicted to online communication and dialogue. This generation often seems almost impossible to impress, as they are hungry for unique Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

experiences and unlimited service offerings and their ethical requirements are pretty high. Expert after expert blames the internet and social media for the increase in loneliness, especially among Millennials and Generation Z. Social media might connect you with hundreds of friends across the globe, but it also encourages people to compare their lives to those of others, often resulting in feelings of not belonging rather than a sense of community.

social wellbeing to work systems – the level of performance has increased and so have expectations. Academics, the future, finances, personal appearance and acceptance all play a very important role and are the main culprits when it comes to anxiety and depression. Fitting in socially has become a necessity to many and the pressure to perform is constant.

Social Media Even though you get to hang out with your BFF online, social media has become such an easy alternative to stay in touch that people don’t make time to get out and connect face-to-face. Spending all that time looking at other people’s perfectly presented lives (or even spending too much time looking at ourselves) often creates a warped idea of what life is like or what we want life to be. This often leads to us feeling inferior or left out. FOMO is real and it can absolutely fuel a downward spiral.

Responsibility Instant gratification must have a finger in the pie here. Both the Millennials and Generation Z have grown up with things happening at the click of a button and as human beings we often get frustrated with situations where things don’t go our way. Even though the economic climate is not at its optimum and many people are jobless, isn’t this the ideal time for these generations to step up, be creative and do something other than look at other people’s social profiles and feel inferior? There is such a big opportunity here – creating social spaces where people can have intimate, human-to-human interactions and detox from the digital world.

The HOTlist

Nicola Engelbrecht Impressively clever about life’s shenanigans

16-year-old Nicola Engelbrecht is impressively clever about life's shenanigans, especially when it comes to technology, relationships and young people's relationship with technology. She explains that they all have their own tablets to work from in school - all of their books conveniently loaded onto it. It's easy that way, but she also says that it often causes headaches and it definitely has an impact on her sight. She claims that technology - Instagram, Snapchat and Whatsapp in particular - has a huge impact on children's communication skills. Chatting with emojis is the way to do it these days and she agrees that parents should be well-informed, because conversations in this emoji language could easily become dangerous. Socialising with her friends includes having some cake and coffee at a restaurant and meeting up at Loftus Park, which is just around the corner from Afrikaans Girls High School. She says she loves being an Affie and feeling part of such a special girl-bond. "When you feel down or sad, you always have someone who is there for you." For her, technology and social media has its perks, but it is also very dangerous. She says that today it is more important than ever to make an effort to communicate face-to-face to keep from becoming socially awkward when you are put in situations where you need to communicate with words instead of emojis.

We are giving away 3 copies of the book, Selfies, Sexts and Smartphones by Emma Sadleir and Lizzie Harrison - a teenager's online survival guide and a must-read for anyone who would like to stay informed on where this technological age is taking our youth. HATFIELD The students’ hood

I

t is inevitable that Hatfield has a high density of students and student accommodation as the University of Pretoria’s main campus is right there. This neighbourhood boarders the University of Pretoria to the West and LC de Villiers Park, the High Performance Centre and TUKS Sports Campus (LC de Villiers Sports Grounds) to the East. Aanklas (evening class) in Hilda Street is known for its Open Mic Nights, Beer Pong Challenges and Karaoke evenings. Their Open Mic Nights happen on Sunday evenings and are ideal for new musicians to be seen and lovers of new music to check out new bands. The shows are acoustic only and each band or artist gets a 20-minute slot. And, what is an open mic without pizza, beer and cocktail specials? E AandklasPta Lollipop Roadhouse The Lollipop Roadhouse actually falls under Colbyn, but it’s close enough to still qualify as part of Hatfield. If you’re out of ideas for a date night and you’re broke like most students are, this might be a great option and something completely different than the norm. Try one of their curries or bunnies or just a plain old burger. It’s the perfect grab and go option and it’s rather close to the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, so consider making it a lunch date and enjoy your roadhouse grub on an outstretched piece of lawn. 1 www.zomato.com/pretoria/lollipoproadhouse-colbyn

sports GEORGE KUSCHE PRETORIAN ATHLETE MAKES WAVES ABROAD

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

George Kusche will be visiting his home country between June and August this year and we wanted to find out more about his everyday life as he is now studying and training abroad.

K

usche’s athletic career kicked off at a young age when he was a scholar at Afrikaans Boys High School. The highlight, however, was in his Matric year when he qualified to compete at the World Juniors. On 11 May 2019 he ran his strongest item, 1500m, at a mere 3:39:33 – the fastest for a South African in 2019. A proud Affie, George was in the school’s residence for five years after which he started studying at TUKS. He completed three semesters at the University of Pretoria before he moved to America where he is currently studying Actuarial Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He says the

overall living standards in America are higher, it is cleaner and it feels safer. Kusche dreams of winning the NCAA Championships and wants to go to the Olympics one day. The NCAA is the national student championships of America and according to him, this championship is very competitive. Doing well at these championships often leads to good professional contracts which is one of his main goals at this stage. He usually competes in 1500m and 5000m items and his training schedule is strict with an average of up to 125km per week. That comes down to at least

two to three hours’ physical exercise per day and often this is prolonged with ice baths and stretching. He exercises twice daily, expect on Sundays when he exercises only once. Sundays are long days, however, as he pushes it to about 24km jogs on these days. The other days of the week consist of jogging in the mornings and other more focused training sessions in the afternoons. As with most athletes, his biggest challenge is to stay free from injuries. According to Kusche, training in America is different from South Africa as there is much more professional support like doctors, physios, coaches and training facilities. “In winter it is very cold, but then we train indoors on an indoor running track. Summer is very similar to South Africa’s climate.” He says it’s also more competitive in America. When he visits South Africa, he spends most of his time in Malelane where his parents live, but he also makes time to visit the bush and the beach. When he sits foot in SA in June, the first thing he’ll do is to drink a beer. “In South Africa it is legal seeing that I am 18. In America you must be 21 before you may drink alcohol.”

George Alfred Kusche is a South African athlete you should keep your eyes on. Pretoria might be his hometown, but he is making waves across the globe. Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

shopping What do kids

REALLY WANT? Shopping for kids made easy

Leanne Gordon-Myers from Pollywiggles recently launched KeyCraft’s latest collectible toy and she shares her thoughts on the current toy trends for kids.

Here are 3 top toy trends for 2019:

Compound crazy Any creative compounds will catch the attention of school kids. Whether it’s pink slime, kinetic sand, dough or putty – these are all popular either on their own or in combination with the unboxing trend. Compound-based activities and toys are a brilliant way to motivate kids to use and develop their creativity. It helps them to familiarise themselves with different textures, styles of design and construction. Creative play allows children the freedom to explore new possibilities, to learn, to think out of the box, to practice original thinking and to device solutions. Even though any slimy toy might pose a certain amount of messiness in your home, it also has real educational value.

Unboxing Kids just love the surprise element that comes with the unwrapping or unboxing of any gift or toy. They also enjoy looking for rare or limited-edition versions of certain toys, which creates a sense of

Foodie fun As Millennial parents are becoming more health conscious, so are their children. Hence, the foodie fun trend reflects the strong emphasis on parents who are very conscious about where their food

According to Leanne Gordon-Myers, who recently launched the collectible toy, LolliPutti, in South Africa, children already become interested in collecting items from the young age of 5. She says by collecting, children are not only able to learn more about money and budgeting, they eventually also get a sense of achievement and personal responsibility, which is great in the competitive and challenging world they grow up in.

comes from. With this in mind, it seems that scented toys have become a very hot trend among kids. For them, it is fun to pick scents that appeal to them and to collect characters, toys, backpack charms and other toys that consist of one of their favourite smells. LolliPutti, which is available at both Toys R Us and Toy Kingdom - shops you’ll find at numerous shopping centres around Pretoria (including Menlyn Park Shopping Centre and Woodlands Boulevard) - has been designed to spark children’s creativity and innovation. It is available in 3 trendy themes: Monster Makers, Unicorn Lab and Scented Ice Cream Factory. Collecting these might not be such a bad idea…

hopping toys for kids is often quite the challenge as parents feel they would like their kids to at least get something out of it. Parents also don’t want toys to be cool for a day and then just lie around to be chewed up by the dogs. Still, you obviously want to buy toys your kids would like.

hormones, medication, diet, stress, smoking and inappropriate skincare all have an impact on your skin.

Causes for Acne The myths surrounding acne suggesting that people with acne are less hygienic may have grounds but are not always true for every individual. Genetics,

Medications like steroids and lithium can also cause acne and even though your diet (especially a high intake of dairy products and a diet with a high glycaemic index), stress, smoking and inappropriate

Genetics – the thing that determines everything about you, including your skin type - is the one thing we cannot escape. Some people unfortunately have skin that is more prone to blemishes, inflammation and acne than others and if both your parents had acne, you will most probably have it too. Acne is without a doubt a hormonal disease. Hormones cause the development of the sebaceous glands as well as the stimulation of sebum production and an increase in hormones (like during puberty) is one of the main reasons for acne. Changes in the hormonal levels during a woman’s menstrual cycle can also cause flare-ups.

skincare can’t necessarily cause acne, it can trigger or aggravate it. Cures for Acne Looking after your skin is one of the most important things you can do for the older you. Keeping your diet and your body clean by eating healthy, exercising, reducing your stress levels and not smoking will already influence your skin’s appearance. Still, acne is a disease and therefore a thorough skincare routine is very important. Using products that are suitable for your skin’s requirements is a good start and cleansing your skin twice daily is non-negotiable. Use concealers and make-up that are formulated for acne-prone skin and keep in mind that blemishes can cause pigmentation and therefore using appropriate sun protection is very important. Acne medications also often make skin more sensitive for UV rays. Rather keep the medicines as a last resort as some of them might have side effects.

K

nowing the difference between blemishprone skin and actual Acne (Acne Vulgaris) might be the first step in curing your Acne. Eucerin explains that blemish-prone skin is usually skin that is prone to developing comedones and pimples. According to them, this type of skin is usually quite oily and appears shiny, because the sebaceous glands (small glands in the skin that secrete an oily matter into hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair) produce more sebum than in other skin types. Acne, on the other hand, is a non-contagious skin condition that is characterised by pimples that are caused by inflamed and infected sebaceous glands. This skin condition is most common in adolescents, but can persist into adulthood and some people, especially women may experience symptoms for the first time only after the age of 25. This persistent or late onset Acne is called Acne Tarda.

at @ UP is an inspirational and professional restaurant that has been run by the Department of Consumer and Food Sciences and its students at the University of Pretoria for roughly 30 years. They often host events where outside guests have the opportunity to indulge in their fine cuisine, like the recent Convivando event. The students are responsible for everything and are split into cooking and serving groups, ensuring that their guests are all well looked after. Our welcome drink was a delicious, spicy Convivando offers an informal meeting opportunity for people associated with the University of Pretoria as alumni, staff or students and their guests. tablecloths and fresh flowers. We thought it was quite clever, as with wine pairings there are always many glasses on the table, and you wouldn’t want it to feel overcrowded. Fryer’s Cove Vineyards’ Marketing Manager, Francois Jansen van Rensburg was the wine representative for the evening and he jelled well with the students’ culinary presentation. The dinner kicked off with two starters – the first being a Sole Paupiette with Pesto, Balsamic-roasted Cocktail Tomatoes and Zucchinni Crisp, which was paired with Fryer’s Cove’s Doringbay Sauvignon Blanc 2018. Starter two, paired with Bamboes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017, was a Smoked Snoek Pâté served with Petite Magwinya (vetkoek with a little more sugar than what we’re used to), Spekboom and Dried Apricot Salad and a Vinaigrette made with herb-infused oil. The main consisted of Kudu Loin with Cauliflower Purée, Pickled Beetroot, Harissa-roasted Carrots and Red Wine Jus paired with Fryer’s Cove’s Bamboes Bay Pinot Noir 2015. This wine was divine, especially with the venison

and is the perfect transition wine to ease you into winter. Dessert was paired with the very special Hollebaksstrandfontein Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and consisted of Goat’s Cheese Ice Cream with Stewed Dried Figs, Lemon Pound Cake and Salted Pecan Brittle Crumble – definitely something for that sweet tooth! It was lovely to witness how the guests for the evening were all very reluctant to try out every dish and every wine with zeal. The students were all very professional and with helping hands ‘backstage’ (Dr. Gerrie du Rand and Mr. Hennie Fisher) they were all well prepared and they executed the evening perfectly. Learning while doing is the best way to become the best and this is what Eat @ UP teaches its students. KINGKLIP WITH CAPERS “A plate of food so delicious that I can still taste it – many a day I would arrive home from school to this.” – Marlene van der Westhuizen

T

his recipe is from Marlene van der Westhuizen’s latest recipe book, PLATE. An easy enough recipe to dish up for Father’s Day, we’d say.

Enough for 6 people.

1.2kg kingklip, sliced into 6 portions 15ml cake flour Salt and white pepper to taste 30ml vegetable oil 60ml butter Juice of 1 lemon 15ml Worcestershire sauce 30ml capers 150g button mushrooms 30ml chopped fresh parsley

Pat the kingklip fillets dry with kitchen paper and toss them gently in a mixture of the flour, salt and pepper. Heat the oil and half of the butter in a large frying pan. Fry the fish for about 3 minutes on each side until it is perfectly cooked. Lift the fish fillets with a slotted spoon from the pan to a serving dish and keep warm. Deglaze the pan with the lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce, add the capers and cook together for a few minutes. In a smaller pan, melt the rest of the butter over a high heat and quickly stir-fry the mushrooms until they are caramelised. Toss them into the pan with the caper sauce. Add the parsley and spoon the sauce over the warm kingklip. Serve immediately. Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

FISHING WITH DAD

Father-son bonding time around P-town’s fish waters For many a boy their first fishing experience was with dad. With ånarrowed down a couple of P-town fishing spots.

T

hey say that many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not the fish they’re after, but rather the quality time spent together; the peace and quiet; the freedom. With Pretoria being a major city, fishing is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when you’re planning some father-son bonding time. Still, you’d be surprised at how many options there actually are where you can teach your son about fishing (or about life). STRUBEN DAM This dam is smack bam in the middle of everything and very few people know that you can actually fish here. Situated in the Struben Dam Bird Sanctuary, this dam forms part of a flood control system in die Waterkloof Spruit. There are limited casual fishing spots available on the dam’s South-Eastern banks and it works on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can also bring the rest of the family if you like as there are hiking, birding and picnic options too. Groups of more than 10 must submit an activity request to adelenem@tshwane.gov.za. Struben Dam’s visiting hours for winter (until

the end of August) is 6AM to 6PM. 1 www.tshwane.gov.za/sites/tourism/ NatureConservation/Pages/Struben-Dam-BirdSanctuary BASS LAKE LODGE If you’re looking for a bleisure option in Pretoria, this is it! Mix your business conference at Bass Lake Lodge with some pleasure beside the fish waters by bringing along your fishing gear. The lodge itself is exclusive to guests visiting for conferences or other functions and fishing is included in your accommodation costs, unless you want to hire in their SA Bass fishing facilitator. It’s also the ideal teambuilding option for companies looking to do some leisure activities with their teams. 1 www.basslakelodge.co.za WONDERLAND 45 This is the perfect spot for fishing, camping and day visits. Wonderland 45 is located East of Pretoria on the Boschkop Road. Here you can fish to your heart’s content from 5 dams and the Boschkop River and fishing here works on a catch and release basis. You can catch Carp,

Bass, Baber and Tilapia here and in the cooler months (from April to November) you’ll even be able to do some fly-fishing for trout. Bookings are essential for camping, but you can just pitch for the day too. There is a jumping castle, water slide, swimming pools and even an animal farm for kids to enjoy. 1 www.wonderland45.co.za There are also a couple of estates in and around Pretoria where you can fish. These are mostly private for residents and include Leisure Bay Lake, Silver Lakes Golf Estate, Midstream, Clearwater Fly-fishing Estate and Woodhill Golf Estate. 1 www.lbay.co.za 1 www.silverlakes.co.za 1 www.midstream.co.za 1 www.woodhillestate.co.za

P.S. It’s wonderful if a dad takes his son fishing, but there is a very special place in heaven for dads who take their daughters shopping! Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

with a couple of cool bars down the street. According to locals, it’s a comfortable spot to spend an evening out as it is close to everything and relatively safe. Jukes Jukes has launched its new menu in May and they host regular game nights where you get to enjoy an evening of UNO or 30 Seconds. They say they are bringing a bunch of games to Jukes, because there’s no such thing as too much fun. Their menu is your typical trendy pub and grub with burgers, pizzas, loaded fries and paninis. They also have what they call Waangs with your preferred flavour and dipping sauce. Their Lekker Challenges are for those who always want to win and if you are able to complete one of these challenges, your meal is on the house. The first challenge is The Mofo Burger. Don’t ask. The second: wings that’ll make you sting. Need we say more? Q @jukes_bar Jolly Roger This joint celebrated its 3rd birthday in May and like Jukes, it is also part of The Strip down Lynnwood Road. Wednesdays and Sundays are perfect for pizza at Jolly Roger as they go for a mere R50 on these days! Starting in June, they also have a new edition of their First Thursday Madness in

collaboration with FourCorners Productions. These events will include some of the biggest names in the South African electronic and Hip-Hop music scene. Q @jollyrogerhatfield The Grind Bar & Eatery Also part of The Strip is The Grind Bar & Eatery. This bar and eatery is all for cool lineups and insane burger specials. They work very closely with Bunk, hosting numerous live music events. The event, Bunk: Peer Pressure is coming up on the 1st of June with bands like Cockles, Weed Dealer, Scarlotte Will and The Constanzas who will be performing live. Bunk: Peer Pressure is also in partnership with Devil’s Peak Brewing Company. Q @thegrindbar The Social Club Located in Burnett Street, The Social Club is just around the corner from the Hatfield Gautrain Station. They change things up with Thursday Student Nights where they run insane student specials between 4PM and 9PM. Another favourite is their Old School Wednesdays which usually run from 5PM to 10PM and last time we checked you could get Tequila at R10 and Heineken at R20. Sundays at The Social Club are all about half price between 4PM and 6PM. Q @tsc_hatfield

VIRTUAL REALITY The future of conferencing

Virtual Reality has been a hot topic when it comes to gaming for quite some time, but did you know that it is moving into the conferencing sphere too?

P

latforms like GlobalMeet – an award-winning audio, web and video conferencing platform – can connect people all over the world, whether they are in the office, on the couch or enjoying a cappuccino at their local coffee shop. The collaboration and communication options and support for one-on-one meetings and team check-ins are endless and quite impressive and it is ushering in a whole new generation of business communication.

30

Clearly Virtual Reality (VR) technology is slowly, but surely changing the way we do Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

How will VR change the way we work? Virtual Reality will allow you to meet with anyone face-to-face as long as you have a headset. You will simply slide on your VR display to see your colleagues in the comfort of your own living room. As it evolves, it will have an increased impact on your workflow, allowing you to manipulate data and workstations in exciting new ways. This will make the collection of data, as well as the creation and analyses thereof more seamless and speed up the process. If Skype calls are one of your biggest frustrations in the workspace, we might have good news. It seems that Virtual Reality might be a solution to your frustrations. VR Apps to keep an eye on Bigscreen is an app that allows people to collaborate and friends to hang out together. It features virtual worlds, custom avatars, private and public rooms, voice chat, desktop sharing and controllers which means for business, this

application could be very useful. Through Bigscreen, colleagues can meet and converse in virtual reality, helping them to share ideas and work on projects together without having to share the same office space. Doghead Simulations’ rumii is similar to Bigscreen, but is largely focused on business specifically. It was developed for official office work rather than for friends. This app is great to use as it is accessible on any device. It supports headsets, desktops (Windows and Mac), tablets and smartphones. Other apps to look out for are Improov, Cisco Spark in VR, meetingRoom, Objective Theory and VR Medusa. VR World If Virtual Reality is something you’re interested in from a business perspective, the 4th VR World event – a one-day conference and exhibition focused solely on Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality and its impact beyond gaming - will be held in London on 26 November 2019. Why not save up for a fun business trip? Here industry experts will be talking about how VR is transforming business’ technology strategies. 1 www.vrworldevent.com

GEN Z

Reshaping travel as we know it Seems like leave days for Gen Z is high in demand and Millennials and other generations will need to make space on planes and trains as they travel around 29 days per year (according to a study done by Expedia Media Solutions).

Travel Splurging Even though many of Generation Z is fresh out of college with very limited budgets, they are still willing to splurge on one thing when they travel: experiences. The more unique, one-of-a-kind experiences they could have at one destination, the better. According to a New Horizons Survey, over a third of this generation is willing to spend extra on food and drink experiences and things like flight upgrades and premium travel packages are definitely not priority. For them it is all about ticking off their bucket list items and the destination, the length of their trip and the experiences at the destination all have a huge impact on their traveller happiness.

Research & Social Media Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Anyone does a bit of research before they travel, especially when you’re planning an overseas trip. But, Generation Z does proper research. Where people initially visited about 3 websites, this generation spends time to visit at least 10 websites to get as much information about their travel destination, flights, local transport and accommodation options as possible. Recommendations from friends and relatives also play an important role in their travel decisions, and social media also has a big impact on their final verdict. This generation watches at least 2 hours of YouTube per day and Snapchat and Instagram are the most popular platforms for them to compare and consider their next travel adventures. It is because of this that bookings via travel agents have decreased and travel bookings have increasingly been made online, often directly with the suppliers. Digital nomads & roads less travelled It is true what they say: Millennials and Generation Z are the two generations

shaping our future and evidently, they are also transforming destinations and their offerings. Many destinations now offer high-speed WiFi and many a young traveller have an influence on other travellers through blogs and lifestyle advice these days. Low budgets might be a contributing factor, but Generation Z is one generation that sees the value in keeping their travels local. They are keen on the outdoors and like to be active and they often prefer the off-the-beaten-track type of destinations. In these instances, they largely rely on locals’ recommendations. Deals Having no money doesn’t mean no travelling for Generation Z. In fact, this just makes them think creatively. They find the most incredible ways to see the world, whether it’s through volunteering programmes or by becoming social media influencers and travelling the globe. They are also always on the lookout for travel deals and search for budget-friendly travel experiences.

Some good music, sizzling saucepans, mulled wine, mouth-watering aromas wafting through the air and friends getting together for that impulsive evening out might be just what you need to keep the winter chills at bay.

Fordsburg Night Market India is one of the countries that is known for its scrumptious, cheap and easily available delights when it comes to street food. Drop this in Dad’s Den for Father’s Day

DAD’S DEN

Stay hip with these décor trends

Nothing says home like a Homer Blanket from Volpes.

Designer, Nicki Ellis from Love Milo has recently launched her Winter Alchemy range and we’ve made her insights our own to revamp dad’s den this June:

On-trend colours Think spiced honey and dark hues – these (and pinks) are the colour trends for winter 2019. If you don’t have the budget to revamp dad’s entire den, consider bringing in these colours by adding feature walls, scatter cushions, throws and other signature décor items to the room.

36

Mix’em A combination of brass, midnight blue, black and white might be the perfect mix this winter. It’s minimalist, yet elegant and warm and it adds a bit of a contemporary style to what might have been a dull den. Love Milo’s Alchemy range has a new fabric called Midnight Ink, which is perfect for some scatter cushions. Its dark blue, watercolour-style texture will definitely add some visual interest to a room without being overwhelming. Combine this with some solidtextured elements like wood, metal or fur and dad’s den’s definitely got the look! Hello Pretoria • May 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

White? Really? Ellis says that white doesn’t have to be a cold colour at all. Mixing it with some natural elements might actually be exactly what dad’s den needs. Some fluffy sheepskin could be used on the floor or even on a chair and will still add some warmth to the room. Feature walls This is a great way to add some new life to a dull space. It is rather quick, doesn’t cost too much and can easily be changed. Why not try a dark feature wall this winter? It could be the perfect dramatic backdrop and can be layered with antique furniture or dad’s drink cabinet for those boys’ nights.

Get your dad’s drink cabinet up to scratch with the latest on the shelf. See if you can find Montelobos Mezcal, Blantons Bourbon, Don Papa Rum or Kraken Rum, which should add that tad of trendiness to his den.

Plants Indoor plants bring a natural element into a room and make a space feel more homely. To keep it manly, try black pots and terracotta pots – these are simply gorgeous and will also work all year round. Zodiac Mugs Add a little extra to dad’s den with a collection of Love Milo’s Zodiac-themed mugs – a unique feature and a great add-on to his space.

Have fun decorating this month, HP!

Make sure dad keeps his cables neatly tucked away with one of THULE’s Subterra PowerShuttles – the perfect cable organiser for anyone fond of gadgets.

KALEIDOSKOOP For two small town people, Kaleidoskoop’s Jouba and Annique have big dreams and they have a way of letting you dream with them.

K

aleidoskoop’s music is real and it speaks to your soul - young or old. They always find a way to remind you about what really matters and this is clearly the way they were both brought up and what they want to achieve through their music. Tell us what you are currently busy with. Well, we were busy with Musiek soos Grond. It is over for now, but we are busy fixing new dates for it. We hope that we’ve started some kind of movement from which we can do a couple of things – not just shows, but even an album. We are dreaming big with it.

40

Whose brainchild was Musiek soos Grond? This one was Jacques’ (Joshua na die Reën) idea. We tried launching something similar in 2012, but it didn’t work. The time was not right and none of us (except maybe for Bouwer Bosch) had big Hello Pretoria • June 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

names in the industry yet. This time it worked, and we can even fund it ourselves now, which was the whole idea. The whole feel of Musiek soos Grond is very organic. We’re trying to keep it as noncommercial as possible. Your music video for Fakkels was recently launched. Tell us more about it. Yes, Fakkels is our fourth single from the album, Gunsteling Seisoen. I (Annique) wrote Fakkels and it’s the first video that we made for a song that I wrote. The song is about fears, mainly because I have always been afraid of the dark and often still am when I’m alone. It also translates to adulthood where you are often afraid of the dark – not necessarily physical darkness, but things that you’re scared of even though you’re an adult. The video describes how we are the carriers of light and that we can oust darkness with our light. What are the plans for the near future? We are headed back to Cape Town for now to finalise and organise the rest of the year’s tours and shows.

Where in Cape Town are you based? In the Paarl area. We are originally from the countryside, so we’re just back where we came from. The countryside also has an impact on our creativity. I (Jouba) don’t know if I’ve ever written a song in the city. Your favourite place to perform? The Atterbury Theatre’s sound is amazing. Outdoors is always very special. If you can have a picnic somewhere in a beautiful setting, that is always a great show. Obviously, there are risks involved like the weather, but the acoustics in a smallish outdoor setup are usually wonderful. What happened at the Ghoemas this year? We were nominated for the music video, Vlugvoetig, but Demi-Lee Moore walked away with the Ghoema for best music video of the year. When is your next show in Pretoria? We’ll be performing at Rosemary Hill’s The Barn on 2 and 3 August.
