fter the social media frenzy from the festive season and all those new year’s goals, we’d like to suggest something a little different as we greet March. And, it’s a good time too because months like February and April require a lot of social media flaunting. That’s why this month, we’re taking things offline – not completely, but definitely toning it down in a bid to connect with friends and family in real time. We’re bringing back Dinner Parties and Boardgames on page 6. We’re serving up some home cooked recipes, dusting off the 30 Seconds and gearing up some old school face time. Keeping to face to face socialising, if you do want to go out for a meal with friends and family, our favourite restaurant in the 012 district this month is Tiger’s Milk. Check out our full review on page 18. Conveniently situated just off the Lynnwood off-ramp in the Lynnwood Bridge centre, Tiger’s Milk Pretoria keeps that distinct atmosphere and vibe that’s featured in every Tiger’s Milk

restaurant. We’re talking industrial style interiors and edgy, retro décor with a tangible cheekiness. This chain of restaurants is perfect for casual diners, businessmen and of course the hip and happening, If you’re looking for some leisure activities this month, check out There’s No Place Like Home on page 23 for a “stay-cation” if you’re looking to turn this year’s Human Rights Day Public Holiday on March 21st into a little long weekend. Take advantage of what’s left of the warmer weather this month by reading our Outdoorsy Evenings to Bid Summer Farewell on page 26. From this year’s Pretoria Gin Festival at Fire and Wine on the 30th of March to a Botanical Night Run on the 6th of March – there is still so much to do before the leaves start turning a brilliant shade of Autumn. CLOSET CLEANING?
We’d like to challenge you to take to the theatre in March. According to research, Millennials are becoming the loneliest generation globally. There may be many reasons for this but hiding behind technology and relying on apps for entertainment might be the main culprit. Pretoria has a couple of really quirky theatres to visit, which will get your bum off the couch and out of the house for some healthy entertainment in the real world.
This time of the year calls for out with the old in with the new when it comes to your wardrobe. Throwing out is easy. It’s deciding what to replace last season’s fads with. Find out what your autumn and winter closet staples should be for 2019 on Hello Pretoria’s website.

The times we are living in have us boxed up. Many of us are more comfortable in our own space than out there, mingling and having real-life interactions.
DINNER PARTIES & BOARDGAMES
W
e all tend to connect more on social media than in the real world, often leading to a warped idea of a balanced life. Even at work, we seem to prefer hiding from conversation using earphones as a tool for dodging small talk. According to the General Social Survey, the number of Americans with no close friends have tripled since 1985. We seriously need to find ways to reverse this disturbing statistic. So, why don’t we take a step back into the 80s and enjoy more dinner parties and board games?
6
We suggest that you go out, buy yourself a recipe book with easy recipes and invite a couple of friends to share a meal with you. Try Errieda du Toit’s Tuistafel, a recipe book that features some comfort food favourites. Or, why not try your hand at hosting a beer tasting. Denis da Silva, SAB Trade Brewer at Newlands Brewery says: Hello Pretoria • March 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za
“Beer is good, food is good, but nothing beats good food with good beer.” He suggests you mix it up with a variety of flavours to taste. Choose a crisp option like Castle LITE, a hop like the famous Hansa Pilsner, a malt like Castle Lager, a milk stout for a roast, a fruity option like Carling Black Label and a flavoured option like the Flying Fish range. Serve the beers in a variety of glasses – use a standard beer glass for one, choose a goblet for the next and end the tasting with a flute shaped glass. If you’re not into beer, why not try the Taste Lab’s drink infusions called Secco, for that perfect G&T. It is made from freeze-dried fruit and spices - a method that has never been used in South Africa before - and it releases colour and flavour into your drink. You’ll be able to find this in selected Tops and Liquor Cities in Pretoria.
We all have a drawer filled with board and card games from when we were little. It’s the time to open that drawer, dust off the games and call up a few friends to share in an evening of fun and laughter. Think Monopoly, Dominoes, Trivial Pursuit, 30 Seconds or Cluedo. Visit 1 thebigbox.co.za for more options and buy your favourite games online. Use this month to ring in your family and friends to spend quality time together. Build those bonds and keep ‘em!

Richard van Zyl, Senior Project Manager at Turner and Townsend, lives in Equestria with his wife, Linde and their son Elijah. “The area is mostly young professionals establishing their family lives. While it could do with a few more trees, it is great to see families out for a walk or taking the dogs for a jog in the afternoons,” he says. According to him, the East of Pretoria is great. “With all the development in that area, it is a good mix of new and established.” “Pretoria has that special feeling that is unique to the South African platteland. It is not as busy as Johannesburg or as sleepy as Cape Town and has just the right mix of events and restfulness for us,” Richard explains. He is an adventurer at heart and over the years he has discovered plenty of activities in and around the city that will keep the adventure bugs at bay. He refers to various park runs, races, festivals, outdoor clubs and more. “There is always something to keep you outdoors and in the sunshine.” He says that Pretoria has a strong sporting and outdoor culture, so you never need to adventure on your own either. His favourite way to relax in the Jacaranda City is to spend some time at the Centurion Canoe Club at the Rietvlei Dam. His wife, on the other hand, enjoys the Boeremark on Saturday mornings. 1 www.centcc.co.za 1 www.pretoriaboeremark.co.za Introducing a stranger to Pretoria’s local cuisine, he’d recommend Kream Restaurant, Harry’s Pancakes or Old Town Italy for the best experience. Adventures with elephants exploring elephant conservation with Ntokozo Mbuli
Compiled by Danita Pilley Images Shannon Wild. & Monique de Paiva
Ntokozo Mbuli is a TV producer (ex 50/50) and the official ambassador for The Rory Hensman Elephant Conservation and Research Unit. The unit will be hosting a human/elephant conflict prevention conference in March and so, we thought we’d explore elephant conservation a little bit– in light of our heritage celebration issue – to find out more about these beautiful creatures and how we can all get involved.
10
S
o, let’s start right at the beginning and dive straight into what The Rory Hensman Conservation and Research Unit (RHCRU) is all about. What sets this unit apart is their holistic and sustainable approach to the conservation of elephants and other wildlife in a modernizing Africa. They believe that the best approach to conservation is to look at the bigger picture while considering the positive and negative effects of conservation on rural communities and wildlife. The unit is dedicated to finding win-win solutions for all by creative, “outside of the box” thinking. Innovation at RHCRU is supported by a collaboration with efforts in various academic and non-academic fields. The unit focuses on the pre-emptive approach to wildlife challenges and solutions that help to preserve the species before a crisis point is reached. We’re all aware of the threats that human populations and poachers have put on our wildlife and that’s why the unit focuses on promoting the value of elephants and wildlife to society. Hello Pretoria • March 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za
RHCRU also offers researchers the unique opportunity to study a herd of free-ranging and tamed elephants in South Africa which is so unique. They also work closely with Adventures with Elephants thus providing researchers with the chance to study a family of elephants either in their natural habitat out in the bush or up close. In addition to working with the elephants, researchers can study land, flora, work with the community project, or test technologies on the property. This all leads to a super sustainable system and ensures that the project remains successful in its efforts. Wildlife conservation can often time seem a little out of reach for the average person and that’s why we love, love, love the fact that the RHCRU has made this project a little more relatable to the public by spreading awareness through their ambassador Ntokozo Mbuli. We sat down with her to find out (in simpler terms) what this amazing initiative is all about. Q @ntokozombuli
Why the RHCRU? Well…The Rory Hensman Conservation and Research unit is not just about the conservation of elephants. It is about working with elephants to aid in the conservation of other species and ecosystems. That fascinates me. From the first day I visited RHCRU, I fell in love with the elephants and I wanted to be a part of them. It’s an absolutely wonderful bunch of people. Rory Hensman left a legacy that he would be proud of. Not to mention that I have a special connection with the herd. When I am around them, the feeling is indescribable. And their stories of how each of them (except the babies) came to be a part of the RHCRU herd, are incredibly heartwarming. Have you always had a passion for animals and specifically elephants? Nope. I didn’t have a passion for wildlife until I joined 50|50… And eventually, when I did, my preference was the big cats. But then I discovered that in my ancestry there is linked to Ellies. One of the clan totems in my mother’s family is the elephant. I LOVE my cultural heritage and finding out things about our cultural links to flora and fauna is a double-bonus. Now Ellies are at the top of my favourites list. Though big cats need our attention too - the lion bone trade is killing them. And I am also passionate about the plight of the pangolin. What are your roles as the ambassador? I only have one very simple role - to help The Rory Hensman Conservation and Research Unit garner more awareness on elephant conservation, but also awareness for the organisation and the work that they do. It’s
cover feature
Tell us a bit more about yourself and how you got involved with conservation? I was never interested in conservation until about 12 years ago when I joined the longrunning conservation programme 50|50. Before then I was carving out my career as a television producer and I had been working for various television production companies and broadcasters in SA, and then later I moved to the UK. Before I moved to London I had done an audition to be one of the presenters of 50|50, doing book reviews. I didn’t hear back from them so I thought I didn’t make it. Three years later I received an e-mail that they’d really like me to present on the show and luckily I was already thinking about coming back so they waited six more months and I was back and joined the team. The late Johann Botha took me under his wing and took me on shoots and taught me so much about the natural world and conservation. The more I learned, the more I got involved in various things, but my favourite is working with young children and contributing to their discovery of what our natural heritage is all about and why we need to protect it.
not everybody that will get an opportunity to visit there and see how scientists from all over the world come and work with these amazing animals and get information from their behaviour that could assist so many other areas in the conservation space. So my role is to be a part of getting people to know about us in various ways… sometimes it’s what I say on television and radio interviews… or what I post on social media. But I also do fun things like my current task of getting a team together to cycle the big races for elephant awareness. I also help them find donors for big ongoing projects like the elephant DNA database. What do you wish more people knew about the conservation of elephants? I wish that people knew that 95% of land in Africa is for humans and livestock and only 5% is left for wildlife. Elephants only have a fraction of that. So the conservation challenges are hard to overcome - so many animals fighting for that little piece of habitat with Ellies being the largest of them all. In parts of Africa, there is just no room for all the Ellies. That’s sad. One fact that people may not know about elephants and their presence in the wild in 2019? Wild elephants are “ecosystem engineers”. They do things such as opening up waterholes so that other animals are able to access them. They also change the presence and abundance of plants in the environment and thus positively and negatively influence which other species can exist in an area. Tell us more about the human/ elephant conflict prevention conference? The human/elephant conflict prevention conference is the coming together of representatives from various organisations and community leaders, to brainstorm ideas on how human-elephant conflict can be mitigated in a way that does not hurt people or animals. This is especially important in areas where the communities are in close proximity to reserves and national parks. As icons of our continent and our country elephants serve as many things; not to mention the fact that they’re just adorable, spiritual and gentle creatures. Here at Hello Pretoria head offices we love supporting initiatives like these and we think you should too! If you want to donate toward the elephant research or the DNA database or if you have any ideas for human/elephant conflict mitigation please don’t hesitate to contact the unit. 1 www.rhcru.com Hello Pretoria • March 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Say hello to
Many skincare professionals’ approach is to work with skin types rather than skin tones. Still, your skin tone has an effect on the condition of your skin. Dr Judey from BioMedical Emporium says that the skin’s pigmentation is where differences creep in. Darker skin types are more resilient toward environmental extremities, where lighter skin types need more protection. Lighter skin tones can, however, handle harsher professional treatments, mainly due to its lower pigmentation. According to Dr Judey, all skin types require products that are rich in vitamins and minerals. The important ones, like Vitamin A, B and C, Hyaluronic Acid, peptides, lipids and proteins can all be applied in serums or moisturisers. K www.biomedicalemporium.com Q @biomed_emporium
RADIANT SKIN When trying to perfect our skincare many of us don’t consider our skin tone as a key component. The fact of the matter is that each and everyone’s skin is different - from texture and sensitivity to breakouts and ageing - and skin tone plays a major role in determining how we should be tailoring the perfect routine. But where do you start? Here are some pointers we thought might push you in the right direction and help you find the perfect products for you.

Kim Franco from Evolve Day Spa agrees. She also says that people with a lighter skin tones are more prone to fine lines and wrinkles, where darker skin tones are prone to pigmentation and blemishes. She suggests that your skin should be treated according to what its tone is prone to. Light skins are often drier, so hydration and nourishment would be key in avoiding ageing. High SPF sunscreen is a must for lighter skins as they are also more easily
According to Brady, light and medium skin tones should use good barrier protection moisturisers like Spa Solutions’ Daily Repair + Protect with SPF15 daily. Night moisturisers should be a powerhouse of anti-aging, anti-oxidant, moisturising, lifting, firming and protection ingredients like Spa Solutions’ Intensive Night Repair, especially if you have light to medium skin tone. Sunscreen is non-negotiable for darker skin tones too and their evening routines should include an anti-aging moisturiser with Tyrosinase inhibitors, Vitamin C and anti-oxidants to even out skin tone. To reduce excess pigment in the skin, the Super Anti-oxidant Mask - loaded with six different anti-oxidants - helps to free radicals, thereby improving skin tone. Brady says that with any skin tone, it is important to exfoliate regularly to expose new skin cells, leaving your skin looking fresh. Try Spa Solutions’ Bio-Actives: Stem Cell Repair (if you are between the ages of 25 and 40) and use it twice daily for the best results. A good quality cleanser (milk

Alchem Labs’ Elize Brady says from light to dark skin tones there is a definite difference in the way you treat your skin. According to her, darker skin tones need Tyrosinase Inhibitors that will even out skin tone. Tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for releasing melanin in the skin. For this, she suggests the Advanced Whitening Complex from Spa Solutions, or even their whitening toner and whitening mask. Lighter skin tones often show couperose (redness with vascularity), a root cause of aging. Brady says that irrespective of your age, antiaging treatments should be part of your skincare routine from as early as 20 years of age and of course, sun protection is key. Sensitive, light skins can try Spa Solutions’ Mild Cleansing Milk, Milk Toner and Sensitive Control to soothe and treat the skin. If your light skin is prone to inflammation due to factors like heat, cold, spicy foods or alcohol, you might find these products with powerful anti-inflammatory agents useful.

affected by the sun. Dark skin tones are often oilier, which means that their daily treatment routine should include products that will balance out oiliness. Even though they are less prone to damage from the sun, SPF is still important to combat skin blemishes. Preventing spots and blemishes is better than trying to cure them as treatment is more difficult with darker skin tones. For older skins, retinol is a must. “It restores your skin to a radiant glow while helping to balance uneven skin tone,” says Franco. It’s also the best in treating fine lines and wrinkles, so people with lighter skin tones should definitely see the difference. K www.evolvedayspa.co.za Q @evolvedayspa
Dr Alek Nikolic, who has been an aesthetic medical practitioner for more than 20 years, says paler skin tones are more likely to lose pigment in the event of skin injuries, where darker skin tones are prone to gain excess pigment. Prevent this with good quality SPF and avoiding inflammatory skin conditions and skin trauma. He says the most important step in your skincare routine is a good SPF 30 or higher with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. He also recommends a Vitamin C serum like sk.in gloss for your morning routine, which increases UV protection and helps lighten pigmentation. For your evening routine, he suggests a combination of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, like sk.in Bounce, to further enhance the pigment lightening effect. K www.skiningredients.com Q @supersk.in
Royale SA’s fresh and manageable approach to your everyday skin routine says: “Water is crucial for your skin because like all your other organs it is made up of cells. Cells, in turn, are made up of water, and without water the organs can’t function properly.” They suggest that you drink water first thing in the morning to flush down toxins and to activate your organs. Also drink a glass of water before every meal, before you take a shower or bath and before you go to bed. They recommend that you wash your face in the morning and before you go to bed and that you don’t have to worry too much about finding the best product. Buying the best you can afford and rather making sure that you wash your face twice daily is key. Thirdly, sunscreen is a must and last, but not least, ground yourself by going barefoot more often. The theory behind grounding yourself is that it returns the body to a natural state, which has many benefits, including reducing inflammation. K www.royalesa.com Q @royaleafriquedusud

onveniently situated just off the Lynnwood offramp in the Lynnwood Bridge centre, Tiger’s Milk Pretoria is perfectly located – providing the ideal solution for hungry theatregoers heading to the Atterbury Theatre, a suitable business lunch venue for corporate employees in the vicinity, the ideal “me time” stop off for moms en route to the retail section of Lynnwood Bridge and an alternative to hotel buffets for the residents of the nearby City Lodge. In our opinion, if drinking a mimosa for breakfast is acceptable then wine is fine, too. In fact, we’d make a pretty strong argument to ditch the OJ altogether and just have bubbly. After all, what you eat for breakfast deserves some attention and what you’ll be sipping is just as important– you just need to make sure you’re drinking the right tipple. Enter the breakfast wine.
Wine: Strandveld First Sighting Rosé 2015 Where to buy it: Liquor City or on www.strandveld.co.za for R65 a bottle. What it tastes like: Tart strawberries and red berries burst forth in this delightful blend of 40% Shiraz and 60% Grenache. On the nose, you’ll pick up delicate floral notes, while on the palate it’s crisp and fresh with notes of watermelon and pomegranate followed by a cool, dry finish. Why it’s a great breakfast wine: This wine has just enough acidity to cleanse your palate and cut through rich breakfast foods with a zesty sweetness to accompany a wider range of dishes. What to drink it with: Love it or hate it, the classic omelette is a perfect pairing with this high-flavour wine. Made with fillings that can be tailored to any specific taste and palate from cheese to veggies and meat all set into place between a fluffy egg blanket, this savoury breakfast dish is a firm favourite. Not only will the colour of the wine complement this breakfast, but it’ll also embellish the flavour profile and has moderate acidity to quench your thirst.

Wine: Flagstone Poetry Sauvignon Blanc 2017 Where to buy it: Check out wine.co.za it goes for R51 a bottle and R615 for 12. We think it’s a bargain. What it tastes like: Flavours of melon and passion fruit entice the nose, with the alluring tanginess of green figs and a zesty citrus twist enlightening the palate. A lovely, lingering aftertaste with a smooth, soft finish. Why it’s a great breakfast wine: The truth is that it’s actually quite tough to pair wine with something as simple as the avocado. Who knew? Given its rich, creamy flavour you really need something that can cut through the fleshy texture and leave an impression on your taste buds. Avo is really a big bite of Omega 3 fats so your best bet is something cool and crisp to cleanse the palate. Fresh fruit flavours like passion fruit and melon cut through the avocado’s sweetness and fattiness and perfectly complements its rich earthiness. What to drink it with: That Instagram swoon-worthy avocado toast. Top a slice of your favourite bread with perfectly ripened smashed avocado, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and a generous sprinkle of red pepper flakes and pink Himalayan salt. Yum!
Wine: Valdo Prosecco Floral Brut Edition Where to buy it: From www.bottleshop.co.za for R269 a bottle. What it tastes like: On the nose, this prosecco has a fine, elegant and complex structure with aromas of blossom and a consistent presence of raspberry. The palate has a pleasant tickle of delicate bubbles that perfectly fill the mouth with a round, warm and charmingly fruity flavour. Why it’s a great breakfast wine: While tucking into your deliciously rich and hearty eggs benedict breakfast you’ll want something with a touch of floral, fruity sweetness to perfectly offset those savoury flavours. And, who doesn’t love fruit and flowers in the AM? What to drink it with: The eggs benedict is undisputedly a breakfast classic. Leave out all the fancy add-ons and bells and whistles and pair this bubbly with perfectly toasted English muffins, a poached egg and agenerous splash of creamy hollandaise sauce.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO… Apart from sales conferences, strategy sessions and executive committee meetings, another pivotal part of most corporate calendars include awards dinners. These awards could range from recognition of sales performance, long service or even supplier appreciation events – but regardless of the occasion, the choice of venue can make or break such a prestigious event. From location, venue layout, banqueting capacity, menu selection and even décor restrictions – there are a lot of decision criteria to consider before making a decision. We’ve simplified the process and located some of Pretoria’s best-kept secrets.

KIEVITSKROON COUNTRY ESTATE With three venues on the property capable of seating between 60 and 300 guests banquet style, it’s safe to say they’re able to handle a large variety of awards functions. It does have dividers to minimize the space for smaller events, but exclusivity can only be guaranteed for groups of 100 guests or more. The smaller venues – Lord Charles and Boschendal can seat 60- 80 guests respectively around round or oval tables. With features such as technical support, built-in sound systems, drop-down screens and a portable dance floor, the venue is equipped to assist with a number of event requirements in-house. The hotel itself also has a spa and various accommodation options on site making it very versatile depending on your event needs.. DE-STRESS AND MANAGE YOUR HEALTH at the Oxford Healthcare Retreat
Words Danita Pilley Images Supplied
Even though I love our city, there’s just no denying the fact that it’s often times overly fast-paced. We’re constantly bombarded by the reality of meetings, appointments, deadlines and the stresses of day-to-day living which can all take a toll on our health. That’s why, when I was invited to spend an evening at the Oxford Healthcare Retreat (in the midst of a very stressful couple of weeks), it seemed like a gift from the universe; and boy oh boy was I in for a treat!

T
he reality of life is that often we don’t realize how stressed, over-worked and tired we actually are (myself included) until we have a total burn-out! It’s true that stress, sleep-deprivation, relationship troubles and overall exhaustion negatively affect our health in more ways than one; even though we don’t always realise it. Often times this leads to some pretty serious symptoms – have you been suffering from things like headaches, sleep problems, back and neck pain, weight management issues, anxiety or fatigue? The truth is that the majority of us will give a resounding YES! And that’s where the Oxford Healthcare Retreat comes in to save the day. Arriving at the retreat the first thing that stood out was its extraordinary location. Just a stone’s throw away from the Johannesburg CBD, I couldn’t believe that it felt like I had just escaped to a country getaway while being in the heart of the city. Walking through the doors, I was greeted with a serene and peaceful atmosphere that instantly had me feeling more relaxed with each passing minute. The retreat is set amongst a picturesque garden and the décor of the house is as beautiful as it is calming - with soothing colours and natural textures littering the space creating an effortlessly harmonious style that’s perfectly complemented by a soft classical soundtrack in the background. My room was no different; beautifully furnished and luxurious. Even though I was staying at the retreat alone, the staff were warm and welcoming ensuring that I felt comfortable and at home from the moment I set foot through the door. This boutique wellness guesthouse has been developed by a team of accredited medical professionals to provide meaningful, holistic and effective strategies to enhance an overall sense of well-being. The aim here is to help you replenish your energy, gain a greater insight into your relationships and improve your physical wellness so that you are better able to balance and cope with the multiple demands of your work, family and everyday life. You will also have access to an experienced team of psychologists, physiotherapists, medical doctors, yoga and mindfulness practitioners
at the retreat, who will work collectively to address the intertwined relationship between psychological and physical health. The Oxford Healthcare Retreat really focuses on reinvigoration, and; reinvigorated is exactly the word I would use to describe my mindset upon checking out the following morning. But let’s start right at the beginning. I started off my experience with a massage therapy treatment with my lovely therapist and qualified Kundalini Yoga Instructor Karen who was insightful, well-trained and filled with amazing energy. It was honestly one of the best massages I have ever experienced and Karen truly left me feeling relaxed and calm. It has been proven that massage can be helpful in reducing symptoms of anxiety, digestive disorders, chronic pain and insomnia and I definitely experienced the benefits feeling so soothed afterwards. The attention to detail that’s apparent throughout the guesthouse is outstanding and the food that is healthy, nutritious and tasty (and tailored to my dietary requirements) was a bonus that made the retreat feel that much more accomodating. After dinner, I honestly couldn’t wait to experience a couple more treatments before bed namely the music sensorium – which left me feeling grounded – and the floatation pool. The retreat also offers psychologist and nutritionist consultations, meditation and mindfulness sessions, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, sauna sessions and more; depending on your individual needs. The next morning my schedule consisted of waking up - from a super restful night’s sleep that was definitely aided by the sleep gel that was perfectly placed on my pillow - to a green juice that tasted delicious and left me feeling awake and ready for my morning yoga and mindfulness class. All in all my stay was truly memorable, and I left feeling completely re-charged, re-energized and ready to take on the day ahead! For more information on packages or any of the treatments offered, be sure to check out their website. 16 Porter Ave, Melrose m 079 038 0079 1 www.oxfordhealthcareretreat.co.za

Okay, so now that you’ve got your food post down its time for that coffee shot. Avoid that cliché cappuccino with a powered heart and rather opt for a super cool Americano with a dash of almond milk in a cup with a personalised sketch of your face on it at The Moral Kiosk. Why not grab an artisanal rusk or homemade biscuit while you’re at it and browse their amazing collection of local fashion, music and art that’s for sale while you’re there too? This spot also hosts intimate
live music performances and art exhibitions from time to time so keep an eye on their socials. The next step is adding a little edge to your feed because nothing says ‘spontaneous’ and ‘adventurous’ like getting a new tatt. Head on over to Dakota Lee, a bar/tattoo studio that not only offers some seriously amazing inkwork but also provides a grungy yet sophisticated backdrop that turns into a party venue with live music in the evenings. Q @themoralkiosk_jhb Q @dakotalee_southafrica Food, check. Coffee, check. Edge, check. Nightlife, check. All that’s left is to show your loyal followers just how cultured you are. And we don’t mean strolling around an art gallery pretending to be interested in a random exhibition either. Try something a little different and opt for a comedy show at the Goliath Comedy Club for performances by some of the biggest names in comedy. The venue hosts to a cigar lounge, VIP area and offers delicious food. And who knows you may be able to get a snap with your favourite comedian! If interior design is more your thing pop into 99 Juta for a showroom featuring some of the most beautiful, architectural interiors, fittings and art by Dokter and Misses, Joe Paine and Apartment 2B. The whole location offers stunning photo ops including a bright pink courtyard adorned with a yellow lamps and cacti. Q @99juta Q @goliathcomedyclub

e simply can’t talk about food trends without focusing on plant-based dishes. From Meat-Free Monday to Buddha Bowls and The Beyond Burger, ditching that carnivore mindset has never been more popular. We recommend popping into Lexi’s Health Eatery for a scrumptious and oh-so colourful smoothie bowl garnished with all the necessary ingredients to make that food snap pop; think edible flowers, hemp seeds, fresh fruit, nuts and seeds. Before you leave don’t forget to upload a shot to your story and tag @lexiseatery and you might be featured on their page. Another must-visit that will surely add little more oomph to your food posts is Kaylee’s Eatery in Bedfordview. W
e put together a list of creative ways to simplify your belongings, get rid of objects that serve no purpose and make space for the things that really matter. Give away one item each day Set a challenge for yourself. Why not go through your house and collect all the things you haven’t used in the last three to four months. These can be clothing items, kitchen appliances or just the random bits and bobs everyone has laying around the house. Then for a whole month

commit to giving away, selling or donating an item or two every single day. If you’re having trouble figuring out which items are worth keeping and which you should get rid of, try to think about whether or not the item has brought you joy recently? If the answer is no, then say bye bye! By getting rid of an item daily you won’t feel overwhelmed by letting go of too much all at once and you’ll have time to really asses the importance of each of your belongings. It’s simple, just take it one day at a time. Try the closet hanger experiment It’s a fact that most of us have way too many clothes. Think about your wardrobe and how many items of clothing you don’t wear, don’t fit or just no longer compliment your personal style. If you can’t identify these items or you’re having trouble deciding which pieces are worth hanging on to try this simple trick. Hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct direction. After a few months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you no longer reach for and can easily discard. This cool little trick can also be applied to any area of your home. Try it for yourself.
Keep things together A simple organisation system will really change the way your home feels. Start by categorizing your belongings as you go through them. Keeping things that serve similar purposes together will streamline the way your home operates, help you maximize functionality and just make your life easier! Store like items close to where you will use them and you’ll not only know where they are when you need them, but you’ll reduce some of the little frustrations in your daily life. Keep the mugs near the coffee machine, the pots near the stove and so on. If an item doesn’t belong in a certain room, move it! Stop buying objects that you don’t need It’s time to change your mindset. Stop spending money on things and start spending money on experiences. It’s true that this is a pretty millennial mindset to have but there might just be some major advantages to living like this. Instead of blowing cash on irrelevant items that won’t serve you any purpose in the long term and will just end up collecting dust in a draw, rather save money for experiences with your partner, friends and family. Not only, will this automatically reduce the clutter in your home but, it will automatically lead to a fuller, richer life.

The concepts of minimalism and organisation have been gaining major traction and popularity in mainstream media lately. We’ve seen an influx of books, tv programmes and Netflix documentary’s (the KonMari method) infiltrating our day to day entertainment and so, we thought we’d break down these basic ideas for you. Because who doesn’t want to live a simpler, more organized, clutter-free life?

Hello Pretoria • March 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za
What are your top three health and fitness tips? • Health and fitness are 80% of what you put INTO your body. I don’t deny myself any indulgences … nothing like a doughnut every now and then …. But what you eat (and drink) makes a huge impact on your body.
How did you first get into the entertainment industry? • Landing my first TV job was not a planned – I was taking drama classes and my teacher suggested to my mom that I went to auditions for an education program for children. I went through the • auditioning processes and landed the role. There were six of us …. had the time of my life while on the show. It was there that I got a taste of the entertainment industry and I suppose the rest is history. What’s one thing people don’t know about reality tv? It is hard work …. people tend to say to me “oh you had a nice few weeks of a fully paid for holiday” but it is not quite so relaxing. It’s still work. We filmed 6 out of 7 days a week. I was up at 5h30 in the morning to get showered and ready. We started early most mornings and even if you were just lying by the pool or in the gym, we were always wearing a microphone and the cameras were rolling. We filmed most days until 21h00 if not later. It was really hard work – fun but hard.
Listen to your body. If you are tired don’t force yourself. REST. But that being said I make sure I get in some exercise at least three times a week. Have fun. If you don’t like it – don’t do it. I love my running so, it doesn’t take me much to get onto the road, but no one must try convincing me to get onto a bicycle. I also use my JBL Endurance earphones and listen to my favourite songs whilst I work out which makes it even that much more fun!
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you behind the scenes as a presenter back in the day? I have a tendency to give the BEST behind the scenes blooper moments. I forget that the cameras are rolling, and they get the weirdest moments out of me. The funniest has to be the one day I thought the cameras were off and I was standing next to a tree. I noticed the biggest ants climbing up the tree and between my face and the remark I made … it was hilarious. I still have the blooper saved …. I roll laughing every time I watch it.
