Hello, Pretoria! Autumn is coming, HP and I seriously don’t think I’m ready. Last year I decluttered our home (partially because of my nesting phase during my pregnancy and partially because there really was just too much stuff) and now I have to start shopping for winter attire as I barely have anything left! (Any tips for bargains are welcome!) Decluttering is, however a necessary part of life and I often find that I feel so much lighter after I’ve decluttered – whether it’s my closet or my heart. It’s like a new season; a blank page. In our March issue you will find more than one way to unwind and declutter in and around Pretoria. We tell you a bit more about the newly launched REAL Spa by Forever Resorts where you can spa away all your troubles – even if it’s just for a day. When Nicholas meets a fellow conscript, Dylan Stassen (Ryan de Villiers) the film takes on a softer tone and there are but a few glimpses of their companionship. The hardships faced in the camp are at times difficult to watch and by the time they go to the border to face an even harsher reality, there is almost a visible sigh of relief. Tackling themes such as homophobia, racism and toxic masculinity, this film should serve as an eye-opener to all South Africans. The aim of this film is to start a conversation about prejudice and ignorance. We need to take a hard, long look at ourselves and what we teach our children. Moffie is the winner of The Mermaid Award (best LGBTQI-themed film) at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and was nominated for the Orizzonti Prize and the Queer Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival. It received a six-minute-long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival! This film can undoubtedly be a breakthrough in our preconceived notions about alternative lifestyle choices.

5 Minutes with Kai Tell us more about yourself, your acting career and how you landed the role of Nicholas van der Swart? I graduated from UCT with my Theatre and Performance Honours at the end of 2016 and worked mainly in theatre prior to Moffie. I now do a mixture of both international and local theatre and film. The casting process for Moffie was extensive and I was seen for multiple roles over a year period - I was ecstatic when I finally got the call for Nicholas. What does the film mean to you personally? This film is about my father’s generation. My father went to the army and only after seeing the film did he start telling me about the traumas he had experienced. So, for me this film is about heritage, how we address this heritage and how we ensure that we don’t make the same mistakes again. What challenges did you face when portraying the role? Playing a role that is as intense as this always takes a toll on your emotional state. I think the difficulty for me was keeping ‘Kai' out of it and focusing on what was true for Nicholas, no matter what that meant for me. Which of the scenes in the film resonates with you personally? For me the last scene of the film resonates most deeply. I unfortunately can’t tell you what it is, because... Spoilers! What is your wish for the outcome of this film? I grew up in Pretoria, so this has always been my home. I was in Magalieskruin Primary School and then went on to Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies), just across the road from Loftus so it really feels like home and I simply love being here. Always loved sport, played rugby and cricket and did athletics as well, but going into High School I was a little more focused on my rugby as it was the area I excelled in, but I still loved participating in the other sports too. I was fortunate to grow up in a home with a lot of support and guidance. How old were you when you knew that you wanted to be a pro rugby player one day? I always loved rugby and was lucky enough to be good at it from a young age. I think the first time I knew that playing rugby can be a reality one day was when I was 12 years old. It's the first year that you can play for the Blue Bulls at age group level and I was fortunate enough to be the captain of that team. It has always been a dream to play for the Vodacom Bulls. Who is your hero or where do you draw inspiration from? I have different heroes in different aspects of my life. In rugby, Fourie du Preez has always been someone I looked up to and tried to learn from as much as I possibly could.

How are you feeling about the upcoming season? Very excited! There has been quite a lot of change from last year, but it makes the challenge all that greater. For me, personally, it's all about striving to become better every day. Working as hard as I possibly can to help my team succeed. What is your favorite dining spot in South Africa? That’s a difficult one, but it depends on my mood. Burger Bistro in Hazeldean, Pretoria is a definite favourite as I love the atmosphere there. Blos Café is also a lovely spot for breakfast. What do you love most about Pretoria? I have been here my whole life. It simply is home. My friends and family are here and I really wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Rooibos and berry iced tea: l l l l l l l

3 Rooibos tea bags 3 cups water, 1 boiling, 2 cold 1.5 cups raspberries 3-4 tbsp sugar (or to taste) 1tsp vanilla bean paste or use a Rooibos-Vanilla tea infusion instead 8 mint leaves Ice cubes, fresh raspberries and lemon wedges for serving

Make the tea using 1 cup of boiling water and three tea bags. Set aside for a few minutes to steep. Then remove the tea bags and add the remaining cold water. Set aside to cool. Heat up the raspberries, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Put the mixture through a sieve by squashing the fruit to help separate the pulp and juice from the seeds. Once the tea has cooled completely, add the raspberry mixture, lemon juice and mint leaves. Drop in fresh raspberries and a couple of lemon wedges and serve with ice cubes. With its raw concrete walls and brick ceilings, it has an incredible charm to it. Karl Jooste who finished building this house in 1967, was friends with French architect, Le Corbusier. The ambience can only be described as intimate and incredibly romantic. We were seated outside and had a beautiful view of the garden, complete with waterfall and all. It was quite serene. Our table was elegantly set with white linen napery, quaint silverware and candles in candelabra. The service was tremendous as the waiters and hostess were present to cater to our every need without bombarding our romantic evening with superfluous chatter. Classical French music played in the background and when we closed our eyes we could imagine dining under the Eiffel Tower. French Chef, Didier is passionate about constantly creating refined and timeless French dishes, combined with a flair of local produce to provide the ultimate French dining experience in the heart of Pretoria. His aim is to bring the grandeur of Paris to your plate and he does it o so well! We delighted in the 5-course degustation menu with wine pairings and were constantly amazed by the beautiful plating and perfect portions. We started off with a cheesy French onion soup and a crispy seeded roll, then we indulged in burgundy escargots with mushrooms and bacon and potato croquettes, a quick grapefruit sorbet to give our palates a cleanse before we had the most delectable sea bass with a potato pancake, asparagus, mussels and saffron aioli sauce. What a mouthful! But wait, there’s more... Then followed a cheese plate with unique nut bread made from egg whites and no flour. The meal was elegantly ended off with a deliciously baked french croissant: Red fruit macarons with mulled wine syrup, champagne jelly, chantilly cream, raspberry sorbet and fresh

berries! Paired with carefully selected wines, this was an unforgettable culinary experience! Brasserie de Paris is the perfect spot for an anniversary, proposal, birthday or just to celebrate life. On completion, fluff up with a fork and season to taste. Step 2: Halve the baby tomatoes. Place them in a bowl with a drizzle of oil, season well and set aside. Halve the baby marrow lengthways, then cut into 2-3cm chunks on the diagonal. Place a nonstick pan over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Fry the baby marrow for 5 minutes, shifting occasionally, until golden. Remove from the pan, place in a large salad bowl and season. Step 3: Return the pan over a medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil and a knob of butter. When hot, fry the Basa for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through. Remove from the pan and season.

Step 5: Time to plate up! Make a bed of green leaves and loaded bulgur and stop with the golden Basa. Garnish with the basil leaves, dollop over the remaining pesto and finish off with some balsamic vinegar. Buon Appetito!

elissa du Plessis is a qualified industrial engineer and self-taught baker. She has never been able to pull her natural sweet tooth and has been baking ever since she can remember. Due to a lack of sugary treats in the house, Melissa started to make small batches of fudge, cakes, cupcakes and puddings to satisfy her cravings.

Her style is clean and uncomplicated, yet absolutely breathtaking. She recently even baked a box of macaroons for Hanri Human as part of a wedding gift for Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

Even though she worked in the field of engineering, her passion for baking never died. In fact, she started sending her baked treats with her husband to share with his colleagues. There was an instant interest and she received her first official order in October 2016.

Melissa is excited to introduce Honey Bespoke, as part of her business. Here, the sole focus will be on exquisite and unique cakes that push the boundaries of edible art. She is also on the hunt for a space where she can offer classes that include cake-decorating and macaroon-baking, among others.

Her name, Melissa comes from the Greek word ‘Meli’ which means honey bee. Hence, her husband would call her ‘Bytjie’ (Bee). When the baking started taking over their kitchen on a regular basis, he started calling her ‘Heuning Bytjie Bakker’, which has quite a nice ring to it. Dreaming big about crossing borders one day, they settled on the English version: Honey Bee Baker. Honey Bee Baker specialises in wedding cakes, but also provides lovely little treats like macarons, cakesicles, meringue pops, floral lollies and cinnabun boxes. Her cakes are a big hit and has been the focal point of numerous weddings. Melissa doesn’t use traditional buttercream icing. Instead, you

Tried and tested We decided to try out the beer and gin tasting platters during our visit. Consisting of six tasters, the beer is definitely something we would recommend to all first-time visitors. You can expect a Weiss, Lager, a cherry beer that tastes like a fizz pop and a beer brewed by monks! The gin platter, also with six tasters, had a variety of enticing infusions like strawberry and black pepper and rosemary and orange amongst others. We decided to try out Capital Craft’s new Italianinspired burgers as well – who drinks without dining these days? Think grilled chicken with bacon, mozzarella, balsamic-glazed tomatoes and basil pesto. Or a succulent beef patty with cheddar, truffle-eggplant tapenade and a poached egg. Yes, you’ve gotta try it, HP!

With the laughter and chatter of friends and family in the background and the music flowing freely, it definitely feels like you’re chilling on the beach.

So, yes it will feel like you’re sitting right on the beach. The only thing you might miss is the sound of crashing waves. But we promise that the DJ’s smooth beats and the bar’s amazing cocktails and appetizing menu will make up for it.

Children are allowed at the bar, unfortunately only until 18:00. But don’t worry, before they leave, they are treated to a full-blown dance party, led by the lovely Bronwyn and they will each receive a party pack full of goodies to take home! As they get indoctrinated by his charm and vigour, their innocence is lost and they are both changed forever. Through elaborate dancing and rock tunes, they meet a houseful of wild characters, including the hunchback Riff Raff, the vivacious Magenta and the over-the-top Columbia. Dr. FrankN-Furter also reveals his newest creature to the crowd - a muscular man named Rocky Horror.

As predicted by Garnet Basson, chief operating officer at The Capital Hotels and Apartments The hospitality industry is feeling the crunch of the current economic climate, with conferencing venues in particular seeing a change in booking patterns. Here are five trends predicted for 2020.

Business travelers don’t go to a hotel because they like it – their acquisition teams choose hotels that deliver value and meet their objectives. They also choose hotels that are flexible with price, and who are open to discussion and negotiation around creating the best possible solution to the traveler's needs.

Conferences are shorter than ever before, with tighter budgets keeping focus on the business at hand and social and entertainment activities kept to a minimum. Agendas are shorter and more focused, with events that used to be four days now condensed into two. The venues that offer conferencing and social amenities on site, with spacious rooms or apartments for guests to make the most of their time away from home, will be first choice.

This ‘shrinkage’ of conferencing has also been encouraged through developments in technology. Platforms like Skype and Zoom make it possible for people to engage virtually face to face, removing the need for frequent team breakaways. Venues that offer a full technology and communications array will benefit from conferencing organisers that are achieving a blend of traditional and technology-enabled formats.

Industrywide- and themed events are growing in popularity, with multiple role players finding value in engaging in an off-site context. They saw a gap in the market when their daughter got married in 2013 and they - like any young married couple - wanted to furnish their home. The furniture was so expensive, however, that they could not afford to do it all at once. So, Johan and Lynn decided to build a dining table with a server for them.

Elise is the director and founder of StopRhinoPoaching.com. She has always had a passion for wildlife, but her purpose and life goal is to stop the relentless poaching of our rhino’s and to conserve these majestic creatures for future generations.

Please share a little bit about your background. I have loved nature and wildlife as far back as I can remember, which can be attributed to my parents who spent hours with me as a little girl, teaching me the names of birds and animals. My dad passed away from leukemia when I was five years old, but from around that age my sole ambition in life was to work with birds, which I did for many years after finishing school. How did you get into anti-rhino poaching? Through a dear friend in the “bird world” I became involved in the wildlife industry, working for the Wildlife Translocation Association of South Africa. During my 4 odd years there, I was introduced to the aviation side of the wildlife industry and spent a further 8 years working for a helicopter company that specialized in wildlife work. During these years I got to understand how the industry works and grew an important network of people in private and state parks. Starting StopRhinoPoaching.com literally was a moment of waking up and being hit by what I had to do. When I became aware that helicopters were being used at the time to poach rhino it really hit a nerve and I knew that there was something I needed to be doing.

When I woke up, it was like an epitome hit me. Flashing in my mind’s eye, I had to build a website and I knew what that website needed to do. Clear as day. So I started, and that was 10 years ago. What are some your biggest challenges? Organised crime is very hard to fight. It is subtle and sinister, or glaringly blatant. It evolves and evades and takes an enormous amount of dedicated time and resources to disrupt, let alone dismantle. Our rhinos are in trouble, and 12 years down the line, the guys on the ground are genuinely exhausted. What makes stoprhinopoaching. com stand out from the crowd and different from other anti-poaching / conservation NPOs? Very deep trust relationships with the men on the ground means that we have an intimate knowledge of the evolving poaching threat. This means we can make good judgement calls with fund placement. Our donors are people, companies and other NGO’s who want to make a difference. They trust our judgment and we are the “middle-man” between the people who want to help, and those that are doing an admirable job to keep rhinos alive.

Tell us why and how you started stoprhinopoaching.com? In March, 2010, a friend called to say there had been what appeared to be another helicopter poaching. Three rhino's dead, their bodies lying next to each other in a huddle. I was dumbstruck and devastated as the flying world was relatively small and I did not understand who could be that cruel. It was a Sunday afternoon and I literally cried myself to sleep.

Why is it important to conserve the things that make South Africa unique? The rhino is a symbol for all our wild spaces and South Africa is the last stronghold. Ancient, strong, majestic yet extremely vulnerable. Whether we realise it or not, we are all connected to nature. Our survival depends on it.
