TIME TO VEG
BRIGHT IS RIGHT
Healthy means different things to different people but for most of us, it means eating ‘clean’ and avoiding refined sugars, gluten and, for some, meat. We’ve rounded up some of Pretoria’s finest vegetarian, diet-friendly and intolerancetolerant restaurants to give you some alternate dining options this fitness season.
The ultimate summer body isn’t complete without manicured fingers and toes freshly coated in this season’s signature colours. We take a look at this Summer’s popular nail trends and explore spa’s and salons to discover some of Pretoria’s hidden gems.
Who to follow Healthy living
They say healthy bodies start from the inside, so we’re taking a look at some food inspiration to kick-start healthy eating and waist-friendly meal choices as we head towards summer!

LG to usher in new era of AI robotics with wearable robot Focused on becoming a leading developer of service robots in the next decade, LG Electronics (LG) will unveil to the public at IFA 2018 its first “human-centric” wearable robot. Unlike previously announced robots, such as Guide Robot, Cleaning Robot and Serving Robot, LG CLOi SuitBot doesn’t navigate airport lounges and hotel hallways by itself. What it does, is support and enhance a user’s legs to allow for more mobility and lower limb strength. A comfortable fit and naturally rotating joints allow the CLOi SuitBot to move in a more relaxed and natural way to enhance the lower body while walking, standing or working. Its sandal-type shoes and automatic adjustment feature allow the wearer to get in and out of the suit more easily, differentiating LG CLOi SuitBot from many other exoskeletons. 1 www.lg.com/za
FlySafair has launched Express Check-In, a new technology that allows the airline to service passengers more quickly than ever before. Express Check-In, which has already been rolled out at all the airports from which FlySafair operates, enables the airline’s queue combers to check-in those passengers without checked-in luggage before they even reach the check-in counter. The innovative new check-in technology was developed in conjunction with Blue Market Retail Solutions, the same company that partnered FlySafair in becoming the first airline to offer card transactions on all its flights using ground-breaking POS technology. Using this same technology, FlySafair attendants can search for the passenger’s flight ticket using their reference number, surname or date of birth, and then produce their boarding pass directly from the device. Designated queue combers will be easy for passengers to spot as they will be wearing pink sashes to identify them. 1 www.flysafair.co.za

Wikus Engelbrecht
For development manager, Wikus Engelbrecht, Pretoria is the perfect place to live in. “Although it has all the perks of a big city, it still feels like a town.” For him, a perfect spring day in Pretoria starts early with a round of golf, after which he goes home to get the fire going for a braai. This, of course, goes hand in hand with a cold beer outside on the lawn. According to him a late afternoon stroll in Brooklyn and sundowners at The Village or The Club is always the perfect way to end the day. 1 www.theclubcentre.co.za Wikus’ favourite way to unwind is going to the movies and he is quite sentimental about Brooklyn Mall’s cinemas as he has been going there since he was little. If not the movies, then any of Pretoria’s lovely parks. The Pretoria National Botanical Garden is one of his favourites. 1 www.brooklynmall.co.za 1 www.sanbi.org
The South African Mint, a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, has unveiled a stunning five-coin Palaeontology Collection in 24-carat gold. The collection brings to life the ‘Archosauria’ - crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs and birds or the “ruling reptilesˮ that roamed and soared freely in Southern Africa some 200 million years ago. The five coins in the 2018 Natura series, aptly named “Rise of the Dinosaurs” will be available in 1oz with a face value of R100 as well as in fractionals – ½oz with a face value of R50, ¼oz with a face value of R20, 1/10oz with a face value of R10 and 1/20oz with a face value of R5, with each depicting a different archosaur, all in limited mintages. Coins can be purchased from the Mint’s retail store in Centurion or at the Elegance Jewellers in Melrose Arch. 1 www.samint.co.za
Jaguar Land Rover has fitted ‘virtual eyes’ to intelligent pods to understand how humans will trust self-driving vehicles, as research studies suggest that as many as 63% of pedestrians worry about how safe it will be to cross the road in the future. The friendly-faced ‘eye pods’ have a vital job: helping work out how much information future self-driving cars should share with users or pedestrians to ensure that people trust the technology. The trials are part of a wider study exploring how future connected and autonomous vehicles can replicate human behaviour and reactions when driving. As part of the study, more than 500 test subjects have been studied interacting with the self-driving pods, designed by UK Autodrive partner Aurrigo. 1 www.jaguarlandrover.com
Wikus says that going out during the week is easy, as nothing is really too far. If he wants to spoil someone special, he has a couple of reliable, go-to options. This includes Blu Saffron Restaurant at the Pretoria Country Club, Blue Crane Restaurant which is situated right next to Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary and has a lovely view over a dam, or Pachas Restaurant at The Club Centre in Hazelwood. 1 www.ptacc.co.za 1 www.bluecranerestaurant.co.za For something more adventurous he normally goes with ice skating at The Grove Mall or Ten Pin Bowling at Menlyn Park. 1 www.thegrovemall.co.za 1 www.menlynpark.co.za For Wikus there is clearly no dull moment in the Jacaranda city! For someone who has just moved in and who might be looking for some fun things to do, he suggests cycling in and around the city. Groenkloof Nature Reserve, the Voortrekker Monument and Rosemary Hills are some of his favourite mountain biking spots and Fort Klapperkop and Lynnwood Road are both great for road cycling. He says there are also a number of tennis clubs to join in Pretoria.

The Cradle of Humankind Experience a whole lot of living where life began….
T
he Cradle of Humankind was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. This site holds global significance as it contains a superbly preserved record of the various stages in the evolution of humankind from over 3.5 million years. The site is an area of outstanding universal value and Gauteng’s only World Heritage Site. Based on the conservation, exploration and interpretation of the story of humanity, its brand value encompasses ancient history, human beginnings, adventure, discovery and a whole lot more. But there is far more than heritage on offer at The Cradle of Humankind. There are over 400 diverse tourism offerings, across eight visitor experience categories from the Maropeng Visitor Centre and boutique hotel, the Sterkfontein caves, adrenaline activities, wildlife wonders, a variety of dining options and a surplus of culture and craft. Maropeng – The Official Visitor Centre to The Cradle Of Humankind is an awardwinning, world-class exhibition that focuses on the development of humans and our ancestors through time from the formation of the planet to the evolutionary process that lead to the

world as we know it today. The tour provides a dual interactive experience through The Gallery and includes an exhibition that incorporates an underground boat ride through the elements. Embark on a selfguided tour where you can take all the time you need to see the fossils, learn about how our species was born, view artefacts and stone tools that are up to one million years old and ponder humanities origin. Maropeng’s portfolio also includes a four-star boutique hotel with breath-taking views of the Witwaterberg and Magaliesburg ranges; a gastronomy inspired menu offering; large conference facilities and a green educational facility which offers dormitory style accommodation and is perfect for school overnight visits. As part of The Cradle of Humankind, the Sterkfontein
caves are a world-famous site for fossil finds and is a popular visitor destination for anyone eager to explore this interesting facet of history. Within the Sterkfontein Caves, scientists have discovered many hominins and other animal fossils, dating back more than 4-million years, to the birth of humanity. The most important and most famous of these fossils are “Mrs Ples”, a 2.1-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot”, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old. These fossils, both found in the Sterkfontein Caves in the Cradle of Humankind, tell us much about the precursors of modern humans.

It is now a universally accepted fact that the continent of Africa is the birthplace of our human species. Nowhere else on earth does there exist such definitive and conclusive proof of our common origin and so, The Cradle of Humankind serves as a site where visitors can explore everything from conferencing, accommodation, science and education to tour experiences like no other.

The Sterkfontein Caves offer guided tours through this unique cave system. The tours start above ground and then take visitors deep into the caves where you can learn about everything from stalagmites and stalactites to the ‘bottomless’ lake and the small caverns where the most famous fossils were found. Conferencing is another aspect of this site that shouldn’t be overlooked. The magnificent Maropeng Conference Centre is located inside the Visitor Centre and is perfect for large intensive strategy sessions to smaller meetings and even a unique executive getaway
that’s close to the city. Situated just a short walk from the Maropeng Boutique Hotel the Centre is committed to ensuring that your conferencing getaway is a completely unique experience from start to finish. The state-ofthe-art facility offers a wide range of services from shuttles, a variety of seating options and full catering amenities to the opportunity for your team to meet world-renowned scientists over a relaxed dinner. All of humanity shares an African heritage and this site is an area of outstanding universal value. CAPPUCCINOS A SWEET SURPRISE
When you hear the name Cappuccinos, you can be forgiven for thinking you’re entering a coffee shop (no judgement here as I was equally guilty). Whilst they do serve a variety of caffeinated beverages and have an extensive cake selection (strategically positioned at the entrance where eye contact is unavoidable) - this Italian Grill and family restaurant offers so much more.
16
There are 20 Cappuccino’s outlets – one is across-borders in Botswana but majority of them are located in Pretoria – and whilst they have a common brand identity and shared passion for service and quality, each store also has unique in-house specials and offerings customised for the markets they serve. All stores offer Italian Mondays (R69 for any pizza or pasta) and South African Tuesdays (wood oven roasted and flame grills for R109) whilst the Menlyn branch offers the Roman breakfast (one egg, two rashers of bacon, tomato and toast for only R20) as a unique in-store special. Hello Pretoria • October 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za
Cappuccinos pride themselves on the concept of “you are welcome” – ensuring that people from all walks of life can experience hearty, delicious food served with a smile. Their philosophy is “to innovate, but not alienate” and they believe they have found the balance between creating something beautiful, creative and mouthwatering whilst still remaining affordable. While many restaurants claim to place emphasis on value for money, Cappuccinos is one of those restaurants where it is noticeable.
The portion sizes are very generous and they offer two sides with just about every main. Whoever said that ‘size doesn’t matter’ hadn’t tried to conquer one of Cappuccino’s enormous omelettes for breakfast!
For those with a sweet tooth, the dessert menu is short and sweet but includes South African comfort-food favourites like Malva Pudding and Peppermint Crisp. Alternatively, there is always one of the many freshly baked cakes to choose from, which goes down perfectly – with a cappuccino of course! As we head towards the end of the year we also start to consider year end functions and festive season celebrations. Cappuccinos branches all have different configurations but are happy to accommodate groups and parties of varying sizes and customise menus accordingly. The Menlyn Cappuccinos has a lovely covered outdoor area, filled with luscious greenery, which can be closed off for privacy. No matter the occasion, Cappuccinos offers something for everyone and the cherry on top are the smiling, attentive staff who make the experience even more worthwhile Cappuccinos

ith a very extensive menu, from breakfasts to burgers and oxtail to pizza (and an equally impressive wine and cocktail menu), Cappuccinos is the perfect location for a family meal, business lunch, girls’ nights out or simply a leisurely lunch with friends. They’re one of the few restaurants who still make traditional woodfired pizza and one of their signature dishes is the Cappo’s Speciale – loaded with beef sausage, ham, salami, bacon, olives, green pepper and mozzarella.

Water BABIES!
We’re on the home run to the end of the year and summer holidays and for most of us, when we think of summer we envision water – whether it be the sea, dam or a swimming pool! We took the plunge and found some of Pretoria’s most refreshing, outdoor activity options for the whole family.

t may still be spring, but summer is in the air and South Africans are embracing the return of braai season and weekends spent by the pool. Sipping IT’S THE SEASON FOR SOCIALISING
With spring in the air and blossoms everywhere, it’s only natural to be on the lookout for spring themed spots for drinks. Whether it is the weirdest craft beer, the best champagne or the most unknown wines, Pretoria certainly delivers.

C/o Long and Milner Streets, Waterkloof m 083 627 8172 1www.facebook.com/meetonmilner TIP If you’re not keen on going out, try mixing your own cocktails at home. Edible flowers can only enhance your cocktails’ flavour and flair. Add a floral liqueur, essence or syrup to your drink for some extra depth. Think lavender, violet and elderflower as substitutes for sweeteners. Also try some flowers as a garnish - rose petals, lavender, hibiscus, elderflower, fennel flowers and strawberry flowers are always winners.

A SELF-PLANNED PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR
W
hether you like photographing animals, flowers, people or places, Pretoria has a lot to offer when it comes to photography. Depending on your interests, your self-planned photography tour might be similar to this: Start off with a visit to the majestic Voortrekker Monument. This massive granite structure allows for the perfect architectural photography. Situated in a nature reserve, you’ll even get the chance to capture a few images of the beautiful landscapes and some game. 1 www.vtm.org.za
26
If you take a specific liking to capturing wildlife, try the National Zoological Gardens. Focus your lens on their focus animals – the animals that are endangered – like the black rhinoceros, the western lowland gorilla, the African penguin, the Cape vulture, the pygmy hippopotamus, the African savannah elephant, the lion and the southern ground hornbill. 1 www.nzg.ac.za Hello Pretoria • October 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za
While you’re in the area, why not visit Church Square for some additional architectural photos? Take a break at Café Riche, Pretoria’s oldest bar and while you’re at it, take a couple of vintage themed images here. You’ll also have unique views of the Palace of Justice, the square and the statue of Paul Kruger from here. If you do the tour on the last Saturday of the month, manoeuvre your way down to Market @ The Sheds for some people pictures. You’ll definitely be able to find a variety of people here, from artists, musicians and fashionistas to foodies and designers. You’ll also be able to try your hand at some food photography with loads of interesting food stalls. 1 www.marketatthesheds.co.za
i
Tip: If you’d like to take a picture of a stranger, always ask them if you may. This is not only to protect yourself, but it is pure photographic etiquette.
Then make your way over to the Union Buildings, another architectural must for your Pretoria portfolio. You can even pack a picnic basket and have lunch in the terraced gardens. From late September to the end of November the view from here will also inspire you for your next stop - the city’s purplepainted streets. Stroll down Government Avenue where each pavement has been planted with double rows of Jacarandas. This street, as well as the streets in Arcadia and Brooklyn, make for some of the best purple pictures. If you are looking for a different take on Jacarandas, try Herbert Baker Street in Brooklyn which boasts white Jacarandas. 1 www.thepresidency.gov.za End your photography tour with some twilight shots at a venue like Kievitskroon, Kleinkaap Boutique Hotel or River Meadow Manor. It will definitely be worth the drive and you can even couple it with sundowners. 1 www.kievitskroon.co.za 1 www.rmmanor.co.za

VICTORIA FALLS Zambia Stay at Avani Victoria Falls Resort Location, location, location. This hotel is all about its irresistible position. Just a short fiveminute walk from the majestic Victoria Falls lies this authentically charming African style hotel. Don’t expect frills and flamboyance but rather a truly traditional experience. You’ll be captivated by the allure of its authenticity as well as the colours and textures of the African décor and design. We highly appreciated the simple and romantic flair of the hotel with its 212 rooms and although our room was neither vast nor ostentatious we can guarantee you’ll hardly spend time in it. The rooms are comfortable and cosy and have a gorgeous view of the hotel’s gardens, rivers and walkways.

Park any woes at check-in because the minute you arrive at this spectacularly isolated camp, you’ll be spellbound by its laid-back loveliness and the towering giraffes feeding on grass. This is where you come to unwind and unravel, in a tucked away forest reserve; Camp Kuzuma is one unique African style safari experience.
30
A mere hour drive from Kasane airport, the camp is easily accessible, and a VIP shuttle service will arrive to collect you and take you to the five-star lodge. You might very well spot the big five on your way there because in Chobe the animals roam freely. Don’t forget to look out for the 208bird species that also inhabit the forest reserve. Once you arrive at this free-floating camp, which is magically lifted 1.5metres from the ground and has caused little disturbance to its natural surroundings you’ll smell wild basil and hear the calls of the grey-billed hornbill. with polished floors and gauzy mosquito nets adding to the dreamy ambience. And yes, assume the hyenas and leopards will warmly welcome you in the evenings as they move freely throughout the reserve. Once at the camp you’ll soon realise that the site promotes ecotourism and owners Stefan du Plessis and Rudy Visser take plastic and water wastage extremely seriously. It is rather inspiring that in the middle of the reserve this eco-friendly slice of paradise exists. The totally green camp operates off the grid completely, has its own vegetable patch and a zero-plastic policy. Meals are served alongside the watering hole with a titanic view of the bush and its picturesque surroundings. Fortunately, we saw herds of elephants on a daily basis, so you’re almost guaranteed this sighting whilst nibbling on your decadent breakfast buffet, served on a long wooden table piled with homemade yoghurt, freshly picked fruits, and homemade bread. This reserve is home to hundreds of elephants and the location in the Chobe corridor is one of the largest elephant migratory routes in the world!
We have to mention that the dining experience at the camp is an abundance of delight with no shortage of mouth-watering dishes. Let’s just say the food alone is reason enough to visit and, in the evening, whilst you dine in the boma underneath the stars, you won’t believe the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Also, it is important to note that all dietary requirements will be met, nothing is too farreaching for the chef, who clearly possesses a passion for food and a love for entertaining. From salmon soufflé and raspberry pana cotta spheres to braaied mielies, salted caramel popcorn crème brulee, homemade gluten-free garlic bread, and the finest Tomahawk steak you’ll ever feast on - you name it, they’ve perfected it. Above this, there are many aspects of this camp that you will come to love. One word to describe the service is excellent, enhancing this memorable experience and its nature as it intended to be, good for the soul and spirit.

and healthy options for the calorie conscious. And, while we’re on the topic of ice-cream, Crumbs and Cream definitely deserves a mention because who doesn’t love a classic ice-cream sandwich. Summer calls for gardens, open-air shopping and food markets so why not combine all three and visit 27 boxes for the perfect day out for shopping, dining and chilling all under one roof. Sunsets should also be on your checklist and Old Willow No 7 Houseboat Charters will ensure you enjoy the most beautiful sunset over the water of the Vaal river. Pack a picnic basket for a perfect romantic evening under the stars. Spice up your nightlife with a little escape to Cuba or The Caribbean while sipping on
delicious fruity cocktails and dancing to exotic beats. The Royale screams summer from the minute you walk in with tropical décor, a Cuban inspired menu as well as friendly waiters in floral shirts. Brian Lara will quite literally transport you to a Caribean oasis with their island-inspired cocktails and vibey ambience. Oh, and did we mention the food? You won’t go wrong. We also have some killer cultural affairs on offer that are, in our opinion, perfect for a sophisticated date night. Visit one of our top art galleries this month for an excuse to throw on that new shirt or little black dress. Keep an eye on their websites for exhibitions, there may even be free wine on offer.

What inspired your love for music? I would say, my mother, she told me when I was younger I used to love music and would dance around in the car when the radio was on. She was also the one who gave me her old acoustic guitar to practice on, I don’t know why but I always connected to music on a different level, the stage is where I feel most at home and the most alive.
Your top three spots for gigs in Pretoria?
What’s the most difficult part of starting a solo career in the music industry? I would say finding gigs and building a crowd, unknown artists without contacts in the industry don’t really get a lot of exposure so even if you have the talent and the will, a lot of luck is involved. That, and finding a sound that defines who you are.
If you could collaborate with any famous
What song best describes you? I’m a bit of a closet Swifty so I'll say Shake it Off by Taylor Swift because, you know, the haters gonna hate. Your most memorable performance to date? Blou Hond the seventh of August, I opened for Koos Kombuis. There was a song I did and the whole crowd started singing with me which gave me goosebumps. Even thinking of the memory still gives me goosebumps. It was also such an honour to open for someone as legendary as Koos Kombuis.

musician who would it be?
Definitely my heroes, Francois Van Coke, Karen Zoid and Arno Carstens, all the artists who changed music in South Africa in their own ways. What can we expect to see from you in the future?
I would like to release a CD soon, I already have the material and the idea of what I want it to be, now I just need to make the plan a reality, even a music video in the future would be a cool start. What’s the first thing you do when you get home after a long day?
Hugging my pug Emma and my cat Loki, playing guitar and working on my original songs
