Hello, Pretoria! I love October. It is one of only two months in the year that I can sit on our porch and just indulge in the purple rain that glides across the garden as the wind (that kind of wind that lets the clouds build up) carries the featherlight Jacaranda flowers on its wings. It’s also the month in which the clouds start building up and thunderstorms, typical to Pretoria, come late in the afternoon – often still allowing you to enjoy a post-rainstorm stroll among glistening Jacarandas. Our October issue is themed LGBTQI+ and you’ll find all kinds of interesting reads that tie in well with this community in Hello Pretoria this month. That includes calendar happenings in and around the city, gay-friendly hangout spots and more. We look at how gardening can heal, we share with you the must-have makeup items for summer, we give you a peek of Gert-Johan Coetzee’s new range and we show you why you need to be at the next Club Streetside Market happening at The Club. We have also added a new section in the magazine, called Hello Junior, which will focus on the little humans who form such a large part of our community. Feel free to let us know what you think! @adriaanvenner Adriaan Venner Scheepers says the term “influencer” is relative to him. “I don’t believe I really set out to influence people, but I do live my life the way that I feel and believe it needs to be lived and if that is in any way influencing people to live better, I believe that makes my actions somewhat successful.” His posts portray his faith, his family and what he does to live a better life. He also talks about his business and his job as Director of Creator and Community Development for XOTV. He is first and foremost a vlogger and uses XOTV - a US-based video-sharing platform - as his main means of communication with his followers. “Similar to Youtube, but better,” he says. Adriaan has been experimenting with quantity versus quality on social media lately and says he’s starting to lean more towards quantity. “A social media person, whom I really enjoy following, called Gary Vaynerchuk says it's better to document than create.  And, I tend to agree with him. … I'd tell anyone to just start, whether you have tools or not. … Just put yourself out there and do it as often as possible.” You might run into Adriaan at places like Bean Juice Coffee Bar or his and his friend’s coffee shop, Lifestyle Coffee Bar in Doringkloof.

LGBTQI+ WE’RE NOT LABELS

Awareness about the LGBTQI+ community has come a long way in South Africa and in Pretoria in particular, considering the city’s heritage and its traditions. Still, it seems that there is much room for growth.

Conraad & Pieter Conraad and Pieter have been together for seven years. 29-year old Conraad, Mr. Gay Pride 2018, told his parents that he is gay just after school. He fought against it for the best part of his school years and in a matter of six months after school, he got introduced to LGBTQI+ – something that was quite difficult for him to fathom and to process as he now had to almost get to know himself from scratch. “I always knew I liked guys, but I fought against it because I did not understand where I fit in.”

Stephanie & Lisa Stephanie and Lisa have been married for 7 years and they both knew from a young age that they liked girls. Stephanie says she was classified as a Tomboy. “I had a crush on a girl in primary school already. I had a boyfriend to try to be normal, but every time she walked past, I would think: ‘She’s so cute’. We grew up in a time where you just wondered: ‘What’s happening to me?’ You couldn’t connect it to a specific word. That was quite frustrating – growing up knowing that there’s something different to you... LGBTQI+ in Pretoria Conraad feels that the Gauteng LGBTQI+ community is currently divided. “In Greenpoint in Cape Town there is a whole block that is dedicated to this community with just gay clubs and bars. The one is for the Bears (the bigger, hairy men), then there is a club for the younger crowd like the Twinks, Muscle Marys and Silver Foxes and then further down there is a club that mainly caters for lesbians, but gay guys are also welcome. The whole Western Cape’s LGBTQI+ community is in one block!”

Stephanie and Lisa shares Conraad and Pieter’s sentiment and says that Pretoria is very steadfast in its traditions, which makes being gay or lesbian a daily challenge. “She gets chased out of female restrooms on a daily basis,” says Stephanie, looking at her wife. “When we go to rugby games at Loftus and you stand in the queue to be searched, they often tell her to go to the men’s side.” Lisa says it even happens to her at work. Family Being part of the LGBTQI+ community doesn’t come without its challenges. It might have come a long way and people may be more acceptable, but it is scary how often it is the people closest to you that push you away because of your sexuality. “It is very much about family. Parents who don’t want their children to be gay. Eventually it becomes so difficult for the children, that they run away. It doesn’t necessarily happen in public; it happens in private homes within a family. You want to feel safe at home… I feel it is families that still have a lot of problems with this,” says Pieter. One of the things that hurt Steph and Lisa the most, is the fact that they are almost never allowed around children. “Because we are gay, we are automatically seen as paedophiles; child molesters. You won’t believe how many of our families are like that,” says Stephanie. “There are so many from our gay community who have no relationship with their families anymore.” Labels Conraad says: “One of my best friends pitch at our house with a girl. Six months later it didn’t work out and then he pitches up with a guy and we’re like, great! We mingle and go on. He doesn’t have to classify himself.” “If you look at me, what do you see?” Stephanie asks. “A woman. A human being. Nothing more, nothing less. I’m just a normal person… If my own mother could accept me for who I am, why can’t you? All we want is acceptance.”

“We are not labels,” her wife, Lisa adds. GBV Gender-based violence is real in the LGBTQI+ community. “We regularly went out to Club Scorpios (which unfortunately closed) and one evening one of our friends and her girlfriend were on their way out of the club when five guys attacked her. She got her girlfriend into the car without a scratch, but they hit her blind and stabbed her in the knee… Unfortunately, in our life, we experience that men see us as a threat, ‘cause we’re gonna take their wives away from them. But you know what, that’s not who and what we are. I won’t go for a straight girl, because she’s straight. Why should I waste my time?” says Stephanie. Gay Pride This month’s Gay Pride event is probably the biggest jol of the year for the LGBTQI+ community. There is also a serious side to it, though. “Gay Pride was launched with Stonewall because there was victimisation. Straight people attacked gay people. So, the LGBTQI+ community marched as they felt they wanted to stand up for their rights. I think we reached that goal. We were very successful. I have not been at a Pride in the past four years where there was not a

straight mom, dad, brother, sister or friend marching with their gay or lesbian friends,” says Conraad. “The reason why the Gay Pride was started was to actually bring the gay community together and to say we’ve had it. We’ve been objectified; we’ve been raped; we’ve been ousted…We’re not here because we think it’s a lekker party; we are here because we actually stand for something,” says Stephanie. “I feel instead of fighting for Gay Pride, let’s try fighting for Human Pride. To get everyone to stand together, you need to start moving away from labels,” Conraad concludes and we agree. Viva, Human Pride! Many studies have been done on the influence gardening has on one’s health over the years and it is surprising to see how many benefits stem from it. Spending time in the garden exposes you to sunlight, an important source of Vitamin D that increases your calcium levels. Increased calcium levels benefit your immune system and your bones. A study in the Netherlands has shown that gardening is one of the best stress relieving hobbies out there and community gardens have been proven to help combat loneliness, especially after retirement. October is known as rose month and on 20 October we’ll also be celebrating Garden Day. Celebrate this special month by sowing, planting, spraying and picking. What to sow: You can sow some summer veggies in October. That includes beans, sweetcorn and tomatoes and of course the two must-haves for your summer salad: cucumber and celery.

What to plant: One of the easiest and most rewarding bulbs to grow is Amaryllis. They make a wonderful gift or even centrepiece at Christmas time. You can also plant some Star Flowers – a fast-growing, small to medium-sized shrub with light green foliage. Its beautiful flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and make great cut flowers. What to spray: Clear out and control broadleaf weeds on your lawn by using a selective broadleaf weed killer that is safe to use on established lawns. Control aphids on new growth with one of the numerous different insecticides available on the market. These pests are particularly prevalent during early spring and into the summer season, sucking the sap from plants and causing malformed flowers and foliage. What to pick: If you have green fingers and you have already reaped the benefits from gardening, you will probably have a few vegetables in your veggie patch that are ready to be picked. That includes asparagus, broad beans, broccoli, cabbages, cauliflower, lettuce, rocket, spinach and spring onions.

HALLOUMI SALAD A lighter meal for warmer days

Spring is in the air and the warming weather often calls for lighter meals coupled with a glass of white wine. The Hussar Grill’s Halloumi Salad is one of the restaurant’s delicious vegetarian menu options, but it is also a favourite for meat lovers. It is a quick and easy stand-alone fix, perfect for a light lunch or a side dish as part of a lengthy weekend feast. The crispy halloumi with a creamy, melty centre adds a rich and hearty counterpart to an assembly of roasted vegetables and French-style sautéed green beans. .

Ingredients 150g halloumi, sliced into 4 pieces 1 tsp butter 75g blanched green beans 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 120g roasted vegetables, prepared in advance 1 pinch salt & pepper Crispy onions to taste Balsamic reduction to taste Method Sauté the green beans and tomatoes in a small amount of butter with a pinch of salt and pepper. Place the beans and tomatoes in a salad bowl. Top with the roasted vegetables. A few minutes before you’re ready to serve the salad, shallow fry the halloumi until golden brown on both sides. Then, add the halloumi to the bowl. Sprinkle crispy onions and balsamic reduction over the dish. Serve immediately. Note: Do not allow the halloumi to stand for too long once cooked, as it is best enjoyed warm.

Paws in the East This dog park is a 25-minute drive from Menlyn and boasts adventure dog walking, lovely braai spots and even an on-site dog deli catering for both dogs and their humans! The park is fully enclosed which allows for off-leash socialising and with seven hectares of untouched nature there is ample space for dog walking, jogging, picnic facilities and more. Waterkloof Ridge Dog Park This dog park allows for your dogs to run freely and they can even enjoy a quick swim in some of the park’s pools. The pools are situated at the end of a 1.2km stretch of beautiful lawns and your pets are sure to have a ball at this park. E Waterkloof Ridge Dog Park Faerie Glen Nature Reserve The Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is not only popular for its beautiful views of Pretoria, it is also a favourite for dog-lovers as your pooches may join you on your hikes at this reserve. AN ART CENTRE DEVOTED TO AFRICA

The long-awaited Javett Art Centre has officially opened its doors and this impressive partnership between the Javett Foundation and the University of Pretoria promises to exhibit some of the country’s bests.

he Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) officially opened on Heritage Day with three ground-breaking exhibitions. These include a collection of iconic works of South African art, the Javett Family Collection of modern art and an exhibition of significant pieces from the Mapungubwe Gold Collection. Also on show is Alexis Preller’s Discovery, a formidable work that hasn’t been seen in thirty years. It was completed in the 1960s and will undergo live conservation in situ as part of the MSocSci in Tangible Heritage Conservation at UP. The prized modern South African art collection of the Javett family has been made accessible to the public and in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, the pieces will definitely be a valuable educational resource. More than a hundred additional works of significant South African art is also on exhibition - pieces that have been brought to Javett-UP from public and private collections across the country and the world. It is the first time that all these works will be shown at the same time. This includes Irma Stern’s Arab Priest, Gerard Sekoto’s Song of the Pick,

Johannes Phokela’s Chocolat, Alexis Preller’s Red Angel, Zanele Muholi’s Simthembile I, East London, Johannes Maswanganye’s Jesus is Walking on Water, Jackson Hlungwane’s Crucifix and William Ketnridge’s Felix in Exile and others. The Gold of Africa Gallery at Javett-UP opened with the iconic rhino and leopard and many other priceless treasures that offer a unique view of the precious metal that runs through the veins of Africa. This inspirational space is soon to become one of Pretoria’s best venues for exhibitions, events and performances, so keep your eyes open and your ears on the ground. “We believe that this centre, which will celebrate South African artists, will assist

us in our mission of providing quality higher education to our students,” says Prof Tawana Kupe, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UP. He says the centre aims to support and enhance the university’s academic programmes relating to the arts and which make use of these collections in teaching and research, as well as promoting appreciation of the arts and making the arts accessible to the wider South African community. Nineteen Restaurant, situated at Steyn City’s Club House, probably needs no introduction, but it’s newly launched menu certainly does!

verything at Steyn City seems majestic in a way. The same goes for Nineteen Restaurant – Douw Steyn’s development’s resident eatery with its theatrical arches, ballroom-style doors and marble, chessboard floors. The quacking of ducks and faraway chirps of kiewiet welcomed us as we walked toward the glass encased restaurant reflecting Joburg’s city lights – a strange contrast, yet so apt considering their new menu. Served among furniture and artefacts that seem to resemble old riches, the menu’s African-themed dishes bring some divergence to a somewhat formal setting. There is a perfect balance between the restaurant’s ambiance and the menu’s execution – from the fancy homemade carrot and herbed breads served with chakalaka as welcoming dish, right through to the Rooibos infused Panna Cotta coupled with the perfect Americano. Perceptions of African cuisine might just be transformed here, with every dish cautiously plated and every flavour dexterously emphasized.

Chef ’s Suggestion: For starters, the vegetarian Tomato and Olive Oil Bruschetta with rocket pesto and parmesan is a must-try. The Chicken and Mango Curry with coconut and tobacco onion rice, roti and sambals and the Pork Belly with sous vide, mustard and apple sauce and roasted carrots, mint and Zamalek salsa are also two of the favourites for mains. You can also add the Burnt Aubergine with coriander oil, roast garlic, yoghurt humus and pomegranate to that list. For dessert, try the White Chocolate Brulee with orange gel and black sesame lavender meringue or the Salted Caramel Cheesecake. The African trend has not only hit the fashion industry. It also seems to have influenced the culinary industry across the globe and it is exciting to see how chef Karel Jacobs and his team have subtly incorporated this exciting trend in Nineteen Restaurant’s newly launched menu, while keeping to the restaurant’s elegant reputation. The menu offers a breakfast section, small plates that can be ordered as tapas, light meals for the perfect lunch, mains, desserts and even some options for the little ones. They also have a couple of sides that can be ordered in addition to the meals and their wine list is filled with an array of top South African wines, local and French bubblies and some exciting cocktails. The menu has no dedicated mocktail options, but Junior – our

waiter for the evening - was more than willing to accommodate us with a delicious Pomegranate Mojito. The Field Mushroom Tartlets and the Pickled Kingklip definitely got our stamp of approval for starters. So did the Pork Belly, the Seared Salmon, the Chocolate Brownies and the Rooibos Panna Cotta. e visit Cape Town every year, and without a doubt, so do most South Africans. The city experience is usually compressed into one paragraph of what to do and where to go, but we thought we’d give it a twist. So, we swooped down into Cape Town and molded the city into four unique adventures fit for all sorts of  travellers.

There are many different types of accommodation options, but we recommend the main manor house, which was first built in 1700. It was originally a farmhouse and the original owners bred Spanish stallions and adored wildlife so much that they left a window open in the roof so the swallows could fly in and nest. ROAN ASH

Pretoria-born Roan van As is currently South Africa’s favourite country and blues singer. His authenticity is tangible, which is something you don’t find every day; a character trait true to Pretoria.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Waverley. Yes, I’m from the Moot. It was nice growing up there. We could play outside until the streetlights went on and that was great.

A-list country playlist in America, I was nominated for a SAMA Award, Whiskey to my soul went Platinum – it was a great year. If someone would ask me what the peak of my career has been thus far, I’d say 2019.

How did the country bug bite? My dad is a massive country fan. He listened to Don Williams and Charlie Pride when I was little, and I always sang along. You want to be a singer, but you never know how your talents will back you. I just came to love country. Of course, in high school, there was a Blink 182 phase, but I think when I started making music, I just automatically moved more towards the country and blues genres. I love music that tells stories. Something that’s genuine. Something that brings some emotions to the table.

What’s coming up for Roan Ash in October? On 26 October, Jo Black and I will be playing at the Sun Arena. Jo and I come a long way, so it’s just our story with how everything happened for us. Describe yourself in three words. “Ek is ek.” (I am me). Introvert or extrovert? Introvert in public; extrovert among the people I love.

How did it happen that you became famous? I still don’t feel I’m famous. I just know who I am and where I come from and I just do what I’ve been doing for the past 15 years. All that has changed is a good company, inhoudHuis, came along, invested in me and sees something in me.

Beach or bush? I love the beach; I love the bush. Where I am currently in my life, I’d say bush.

What has been your best and favourite achievement thus far? There are so much. I played in Nashville at the CMA Festival – the Country Music Festival – in June. That was quite a big one, not just for me but for any South African. Three of my songs were on the

If you couldn’t be a singer, what would you be? A businessman. I would have liked to do something where I could help people – like a lawyer, but on the right side of the table. Or, a doctor who goes out of his way to help people.

Your favourite gig spot in Pretoria? I’ll go with the Atterbury Theatre. Die Blou Hond is also nice. And Café Barcelona – they are like family.
