Hello, Pretoria! I am so happy that Spring is in the air! I see the month of September as a month of celebration. I celebrate living in such a diverse and beautiful country and one of South Africa’s most beautiful cities. I also celebrate life and growth as the flowers in the garden start blooming and my baby bump starts showing. And then, of course, I celebrate my heritage. I often reminisce about my childhood and where I come from, as I’m sure we all do. Holidays we’ve taken as a family always stand out. Having a beach house to go to each December sounds romantic and I’m sure some exceptionally fond memories get made there, but we have been exploring South Africa as a family since we were little with our parents taking us to new destinations whenever they could. We’ve seen the West Coast, hiked parts of the Drakensberg, watched fireflies and dragonflies play hide and seek at a lodge just outside of the Kruger National Park and sat beside the fly-fishing pools at Dullstroom. At every destination, we also did something educational. On the West Coast we went to a fish factory and in the Lowveld, we went horse riding on an orange farm, learning about the picking and packing process. Even when in Joburg, we’d go to places like Gold Reef City and we wouldn’t leave without learning more about the Gold Rush. These are all memories made with my people. My tribe. And, getting to know my country and its heritage with them by my side is something no one will ever be able to take away from me. It’s made me who I am. No one can take who you are away from you. Where you come from and who you are is something that is carried within you and that you should be proud of. It should never get lost and this is why it is so important to preserve our South African heritage with all its beautiful and versatile cultures. I hope this month – and Heritage Day in particular – reminds you of who you are as a person, but also as a South African. I hope it reminds you of the responsibility we all have to preserve our country’s heritage.

Siba’s Table was originally earmarked for the Middle East and Africa, but was eventually taken by the UK, it topped charts in Russia and she still receives emails from places like Malta and Greece. Siba’s Table has to date won seven awards in the US alone, two in Las Vegas and about five at the New York Film Festival. “I love the fact that I involved my husband and my family in Siba’s Table – people resonated very well with that.” Being a working mom As a mother of four, Siba says: “I come from a very strong family. Christian background, very staunch in our beliefs (in a good way) and my parents had a very good relationship as couple and with us as kids. I come from a very closely-knit family and mine is too. I am quite blessed to come from that background, which affords me the opportunity to do what I love. I love being a working mom and I think I am a better mom because I work, but you really have to have a fine art in balancing things. Putting structures in place that help me balance it all has really been a great art for me for my form of balance. It never used to be perfect all the time, but I must say I’ve come to a very comfortable spot where I can leave the kids and be able to do what I do without any guilt. If there is, it’s little. I have learnt the art of being present. I’ve also learnt the art of cutting. I used to work from home, and I’ve decided to stop working from home because working from home means it is eating my time with my children.” Siba’s Heritage Keeping her country and her family’s heritage alive, is very important to Siba and instilling this in her children is of utmost importance. “If I can impart a part of myself to them, that would be a big tick for me. A part of who we are as people. If we can transfer ourselves into those miniatures as they grow, I would be so happy because I know what ‘stock’ we’re made of. We’re made of good ‘stock’. We’re good people, we’re genuine people, we’re authentic people. If we can instil those things that were instilled in us by our parents in them, I’d be very happy.” Siba explains that there is a bit of a gap, though, as she grew up with Xhosa being her first language, where her kids now grow up with English. “Yes, they may not speak Xhosa as fluently at this age, but it is my thing for them to know who they are.” One of the reasons Siba asked her aunt – who speaks Xhosa specifically - to help look after her kids, is to help her instil their mother tongue in them. Small things like eating traditional food with no cutlery is another way of instilling their culture and traditions in their family. She is proud to be living and working in South Africa, because “home is home. There’s really no place like home.” She says that it’s only through travel that you realise how much we have to look forward to as a country, as individuals and as businesses. “Having travelled, I really appreciate home and what it has to offer.” Siba’s SA favourites South African recipes that Siba enjoy most are the ones she grew up with. Mfino (maizemeal with spinach, eaten predominantly by women and children), krummelpap, milktart, malva pudding (Siba’s got a killer recipe for that!), chakalaka, boerewors and bobotie are just some of the favourites that come to mind. “I have come to appreciate our cuisine and I think I have made it my responsibility to a certain degree that our food is as well documented and our food travels as much as other foods have travelled to come to Africa. My dream is that we’ll have certain foods that will become staples in other people’s pantries in the world.” Siba says one of the ways in which we can preserve South

Africa’s heritage when it comes to food is to have a collection of the recipes. “The first point would be to record the recipes my mom did; the recipes my aunt gave us (my aunt made the most amazing pickled fish). Documentation would be a starting point and then also to recreate it and to share it in a way that is attractive to all.”

Siba’s Table When Food Network was looking for some fresh talent, they initially had a male chef in mind. They were looking for someone young who could capture their audience. When they saw Siba, it immediately changed the game and they decided to go with a female chef instead.

Siba says that South Africa is a melting pot of different influences that inspired our culture and that is why we have the creative flair to do other cuisines. It is also not any country’s chefs who can cook for masses like we do. According to her, the next wave is Africa. “Everywhere I go – whether it be fashion, art or food – everyone says that. Now we need to make sure that we are part of the wave when it happens.” Appetite Fest Celebrity Chef, Siba will once again grace Pretoria with her presence at the upcoming Appetite Fest, happening at Time Square on the weekend of 13 September. She was part of last year’s fest together with the Australian Masterchefs and says: “People came in masses! Yoh! It was so beautiful to see the interest people have in your craft and in your food.” She is mostly looking forward to meeting up and mingling with her fans again and sharing her new content from what she has been doing the past few months. traction before they went onto Shark Tank South Africa and they were scared that they might lose some of that traction if there were any negative feedback. John now says that it is very important to have complete belief in your product before you go in and that that belief must shine through in a sales pitch, which is essentially what Shark Tank South Africa is.

Originally from the Western Cape, John was able to travel around the world in his younger years and when he returned, he started working in the water industry and eventually opened his own shop – figuring he could do a few things differently. He turned the shop into a successful retail store which was eventually turned into a franchise business with a difference. “Everything that we do always has to be different. We always have to be ahead of the curve, shaking boundaries.”

Marnus Broodryk from Shark Tank South Africa was Gozone’s business partner for about a year and a half, after which Gozone bought him out again. “I’d like to give a shout out to Marnus. It was purely about us for him, not about himself. By the time we offered to buy back the shares, we were making a lot more in revenue, compared to when he bought in and had much more accumulated assets. He allowed us to buy him out for the exact same amount of money that he put in, after putting in a lot of effort and a lot of input and a lot of coaching, so we’re ever grateful for that man,” says John.

John and Len are very humble about Gozone and describes themselves as employees of the business. “When you’re in a management position, you might be scared that somebody knows more than you, but when you’re in a leadership position, you need to employ people that know more than you, otherwise you might as well do it yourself.” He believes that allowing yourself the space to learn is very important. The biggest lesson he has learned from Shark Tank South Africa, is: “Numbers, numbers, numbers! Get your numbers right. Know your finance.” Gozone had already had some

RETORIA'S PAST The neighbourhoods that stood the test of time

Heritage Month has a way of letting one travel back in time, reminiscing about bygone eras and where things started. We were curious about Pretoria’s heritage and did some digging about the Jacaranda City’s oldest neighbourhoods and their landmarks. Fountains Valley The first “Boer” homestead is believed to have been the home of J.G.S. Bronkhorst, who settled in the Fountains Valley in 1840 and registered a farm called Groenkloof. Later more families settled in the Elandspoort settlement with the village later being proclaimed as “kerkplaas”. The Elandspoort farm was also registered by a Bronkhorst and the area stretched from the South to Daspoortrand in the North and from Pretoria West to Hatfield in the East. Arcadia In 1856 Andries du Toit, a presidential advisor, exchanged one of his Basotho ponies for the area known as Arcadia today. Stephanus Meintjies developed the area, which resulted in Pretoria being extended from Potgieter Street in the West to Prinsloo Street in the East and from Boom Street in the North to Scheiding Street in the South. This suburb was incorporated into Pretoria in 1889 and Meintjieskop (the hill on which the Union

Buildings were constructed) was named after the developer of this suburb. Pretoria Central Church Square, initially called Market Square, was home to the first church built in Pretoria. The church unfortunately burnt down in 1882, but the square marks what used to be the centre of Pretoria and is home to many significant historical buildings like the Ou Raadsaal and the Palace of Justice. Sunnyside This suburb was incorporated into Pretoria in 1890. This is where the writer and poet, Jan F.E. Celliers lived. His house survived the developments of the middle to late 20th century until 1970. Some more of the old suburbs of Pretoria include Hermanstad, a suburb that was established in 1897 and Roseville and New Muckleneuk which were both established in 1898.

Pretoria had 80 houses and 300 residents in its founding year. Today there are 2 472 612 living in the city of Jacarandas.

Pretoria was once known as the City of Roses, because of the rambler roses that covered gardens and hedges all around the city. Today, it is known as the Jacaranda City and Bloemfontein has taken up the name of the City of Roses.

J.D. Cilliers – a Pretoria resident and avid gardener – imported Jacaranda trees from Rio de Janeiro to plant in his Myrtle Grove Garden, which flourished so much that Pretoria is now filled with about 50 000 Jacaranda trees lining its streets.

Church Square was redesigned as a tramway in 1910 – much to many Pretorians’ dismay. The tram routes were initially laid out from Church Square to the Pretoria Station, the zoo, Sunnyside, Pretoria West and the Ou Volkshospitaal.

he 27-year old Masego Kungwane has a business mind of note and big corporates definitely don’t scare her. Girls High Spring Fair Battle of the Chefs

Pretoria High School for Girls celebrates 100 years of fundraising with a Battle of the Chefs event at their annual Spring Fair this year. Pretoria Girls’ High (established in 1902) began a major fundraising campaign towards the end of World War I. In time, the event became known as the Spring Fair. As the name implies, the Spring Fair coincides with spring and this year it will be held on 7 September. To this day parents, girls and staff at the school spend months planning the event, ensuring that delicious food is on offer and entertainment is put up for young and old. Sponsored by Spar, Steyn’s Culinary School and Prue Leith Chefs Academy, The Battle of the Chefs event is in its 6th year already, with thirty couples battling it out at the Quad of School House Hostel where spectators pay R5 to sit in on the cooking contest. PRETORIA’S OWN MAMA Clover Mama Afrika’s Rina Malan – one of the strongest women we’ve met

hen Rina took in an abandoned newborn boy in 1999 while already being a mom of four, she never thought she’d be where she is today. But, she realised that she did not want to help only one child and she eventually opened Amadea Safe House – a home that heals the hurt. Their vision is to provide a loving, safe haven for abandoned, abused, neglected and disabled children, to empower women in the area to become self-sustaining by teaching them income generating skills and to create income generating opportunities for the senior teenagers in the house. In 2006, Rina became a Clover Mama Afrika ambassador and she has since gained numerous skills that she has transferred to more than 1600 women in the community. This includes self-help projects like baking with their own small bakery that generates some income. They currently bake 80kg to 100kg rusks per day that are sold at markets across Pretoria and their own local shop in Waverley, which helps create an income for Amadea Safe House. She also assists with feeding schemes in the surrounding area.

CHOCOLATE CAKE

‘Cause who doesn’t like chocolate? Ingredients: 500ml (2 cups) cake flour 187ml (¾ cup) cocoa 15ml (1 tablespoon) baking powder 5ml (1 teaspoon) baking soda Pinch of salt 4 large eggs 375ml (1 ½ cups) caster sugar 5ml (1 teaspoon) vanilla essence 250ml (1 cup) CLOVER Cream O’Naise 125ml (½ cup) water 125ml (½ cup) CLOVER full cream milk Extra CLOVER Mooi River Butter for greasing Icing: 125g (¼ block) CLOVER Mooi River Butter 80ml cocoa 500ml (2 cups) icing sugar 60ml (¼ cup) CLOVER full cream milk 2,5ml (½ teaspoon) vanilla essence

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Sift the cake flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Set aside. Use an electric mixer and beat the eggs and the castor sugar together for 5 minutes until light yellow in colour. Stir in the vanilla essence. Mix the CLOVER Cream O’Naise, water and milk until smooth. Stir the CLOVER Cream O’Naise mixture and the sifter flour mixture bit by bit into the egg mixture until you have a smooth batter. Grease two round cake tins with a diameter of 20cm well with butter and line the cake tins with baking paper. Divide the batter equally between the two cake tins. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the first testing skewer emerges clean. Let the cakes cool down in the cake tins and then turn them out onto a cooling rack to cool down completely. Icing: Use an electric mixer and beat the butter until creamy and light yellow. Sift the icing sugar and cocoa together. Add the icing sugar mixture to the creamed butter little by little while you continue beating the mixture. Add the vanilla essence and milk and then the remaining icing sugar. Beat for another 3 minutes until creamy. Spread one cake layer with icing, place the next cake layer on top and spread the remaining icing on the outside of the cake.

Decorate the cake as you please.

Wondercave Discovered by Italian miners in 1898, the Wondercave is the third largest chamber in South Africa. The formation consists of calcite, which was mined and placed in a self-built oven for two weeks at about 1100 degrees. The powder that was formed from this process, was taken to Pretoria and Johannesburg to produce products like cement and toothpaste. Go down 22 meters with 87 stairs and then a further 18 meters into the cave by elevator and see why this cave is such a wonder. THE VOORTREKKER MONUMENT The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and is situated in a beautiful setting. The monument was inaugurated in 1949. It was designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk. In the Hall of Heroes is the world’s longest historical marble frieze. A tapestry with more than three million stitches is housed in the Cenotaph Hall. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng, and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country. It is also the only grade-one national Heritage Site in Pretoria. The monument also manages the Blood River Heritage Site. Celebrating Heritage Month has many different meanings to many people. For us, it means going back to your roots and what better place to start than with your family?

any people prefer holidays that come packed with entertainment and adventure. We have recently found that holidays that have no planned itineraries and no fixed expeditions could be just as much fun. In fact, you might even return home feeling more rested than with a holiday during which you’ve had to adhere to fixed daily schedules. Brahman Hills recently launched a new addition to their already impressive portfolio of accommodation, venues and restaurants called Springholm. These rather well-equipped self-catering cottages and suites are located a short drive from Brahman Hills on the Blue Crane Nature Reserve, just off the N3 highway and right at the heart of the Midlands Meander.

What was supposed to be a 4-hour and 50-minute drive, became a 6-hour drive since we had to stop a couple of times. You see, for a young family the drive from Pretoria could be quite long. We were surprised at how many stops there were along the way, however, with fun play areas for kids and the necessary shops for some road trip snacks. In the end, the journey to the destination is also part of the experience. On arrival at Brahman Hills (where we had to check in), the resident cat welcomed us with a yawn. We were given our keys and navigations to our cottage and then hopped back into the car for the last four kilometres of dirt road. Once we hit the dirt, it already felt like holiday. Even at night, Springholm with its waterside cottages looked incredibly romantic and for a moment there we wondered if we shouldn’t rather have made it a belated anniversary weekend instead of a family breakaway. The Kingfisher cottage was one of three cottages located a bit farther from the waterside, which suited us perfectly as 19-month old feet can run surprisingly fast. The waterside cottages were beautiful, with lovely decks coming out over the dam – perfect for those lazy days in the sun. But, with little ones who want to explore everything everywhere all the time, the distance from the dam and the outstretched lawn in front of it was perfect. Neatly decorated

with all the necessities (including a travel cot), the cottage was ideal for a small family taking in the Midlands’ fresh air for the weekend. The next morning, breakfast was served at Springholm’s elegant, cosy breakfast room, located on the water’s edge. Talk about breakfast with a view! Even though it was still wintertime, we could only imagine the view once the first rains have fallen. We indulged in a continental breakfast where we were spoiled for choice with a variety of local cheeses, cured meats, fresh fruit and more. Thereafter we got to build our own hot breakfast from the menu. After getting properly fuelled for the day ahead, we hopped down to the dam for a short stroll and then we took to the Midlands Meander to explore. After a quick afternoon nap, a spa session at The Spa at Brahman Hills was in order. The full-body massage followed by a body scrub and a mineral bath was out of this world. The therapist’s knowledge and expertise were evident from the initial meet and greet to the treatment and the after-treatment cup of coffee to take it all in. The spa’s interior is quite unique, with lots of running water that has an immediate calming effect. The treatment rooms are spacious, and its natural interiors have been dabbed with hues of blue for a relaxing atmosphere. A babysitter was organised (at a rather affordable price per hour) for us to have some romantic time after all that evening. After a quick touch up on the cheeks and hopping into more suitable attire for a long overdue date night, we were ready for a dinner for two. Dinner was served at Brahman Hills’ intimate 89 on Copper where we were guided down an old, renovated staircase into a beautiful, rustic, yet elegant wine cellar with stone cladded walls and wire chandeliers. The Chef ’s Selection Menu had us choose between two options per fine dining course. For starters we had the salmon salad and tomato soup and we chose the deliciously herbed lamb chops and Kingklip for our mains. Dessert came in the form of elegantly plated sour cheesecake and a nut-filled chocolate brownie with ice-cream. Springholm was the perfect way to re-root and reboot our family. PTA’S TRENDIEST OFFICES New headquarters for Exxaro

Traditionally a coal-producer, Exxaro ventured into - amongst others - alternative energy solutions. The building is designed to be an asset to the organisation, and it supports the diversified strategy that Exxaro has ventured on in 2016. While they focus on sustainable production of energy, their strategy is diversified to look at the needs of the future with innovation and considerations for carbon emissions reduction at the forefront and this building encapsulates exactly that. Achieving a Green Star SA Design rating was an important factor in the design, and with the building itself having a 5-star Green Star SA Design certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa, all interior materials used also had to adhere to the strict requirements. Green measures include a performance glazed façade, zoned lighting, energy-efficient systems, water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting, waterwise landscaping, abundant fresh air and natural light and hydro panels that generate water from air. A relatively new concept – a waterless urinal for females – is also being piloted by Growthpoint in Exxaro’s new offices. This concept is widely used in places like Western Europe.

LOUISE CARVER Living her calling

She has been in the music industry since the age of 15 and her need to create songs and sing them to people is her primary calling above anything else. You recently did a couple of shows with Ard Matthews. How was it performing with him and have you collaborated with him before? Ard and I have known each other for a few years, and I am a huge fan of his song writing and voice. I created an event four years ago whereby I ask an artist to join me in creating a truly collaborative show. When I asked Ard two years ago, we had such an amazing performance that I asked him to do the next show with me the following year. From then on, I realised we had something very special and that whenever we had a chance, we should perform together. He is incredibly funny and relaxed on stage which makes me enjoy my performance even more.

Pretoria as I would love to spend more time in your lovely city. We see you have a real love affair with Durban, but what is your feelings about Pretoria? Funny enough, Pretoria was the first city my parents emigrated to from England. I wasn’t born yet, but they lived in Irene and absolutely loved it. I am beginning to get to know Pretoria more and more, as I have started mountain biking and have heard about some incredible routes! I am also a huge fan of Atterbury Theatre as a venue - it is of international standards. Do you have any upcoming performances in Pretoria for September? I have the most beautiful show at Die Ou Pastorie on the 14th of September, which is on a Saturday afternoon. It starts at 12:30 and 16:00, so I am on at about 14:00. It’s called Under the Trees and it is in Skeerpoort, Hartbeespoort. Tickets are R180 per adult and R80 per child.

You have the most beautiful jewellery collection. How did it start? Thank you very much. I started creating and designing jewellery 11 years ago. Initially, it was meant as merchandise at my live performances, but it has grown into the most beautiful business which I really enjoy.
