It’s a new year, Hello Joburgers! We’re bringing you everything you need to start 2019 on a high note, from trendy AF health foods to tips to beat the post-holiday blues.

HEALTH FOOD TRENDS OF THE YEAR In 2018, our Instagram feeds were inundated with more social media-worthy snaps of health foods than ever, from charcoal lattes to golden milk. So, what’s in store for 2019? Guilt-free frozen treats like avocado ice cream, ocean-inspired greens like seaweed butter and a bigger emphasis on eco-conscious packing are just a few things to look out for.

SURVIVING THE BACK-TO-WORK BLUES The prospect of going back to work after a holiday drenched in chocolate and champagne is a tough thing to face but going back to the office after time away shouldn’t fill you with dread. We’re here to show you how to make the most of your workspace and your time in the office to ensure a more positive attitude towards the nine to five this year.

WIN WIN WIN! Let the fun begin! We’re giving away a 1-litre bottle of ClemenGold Gin, a sweet and sun-ripened sip made from South Africa’s leading mandarin. The Cape Dry-style gin has subtle hints of citrus and is a real treat for any gin aficionado! The prize comes with mixers and garnishes, so you can whip up G&Ts with a summer twist.

New Year’s NO GO!! How not to kick 2019 off on the wrong foot

We see it and hear it year after year. New year, new me blah blah. It’s a lovely sentiment, and for those who get it right, well done! But why set yourself up to fail so early in the year? Here are some resolutions that you should avoid when the New Year rolls around. Do not resolve to diet

Avoid any and all fad diets. It’s the most tempting resolution of all. After the indulgence of the festive season, we commit to crazy things like cutting out carbs and sugars, egg diets, juice diets or the infamous cabbage soup diet. #NoThanks! The truth is that a detox post festive season is a terrible idea. No matter how well you start, it is an unrealistic way to live and will leave you feeling shi*tty by the time March rolls around.

Rather than commit to crazy calorie counting try some of these more realistic, manageable and balanced tactics:

Lean into the craving: As counter-intuitive as this may sound, eating what you long for keeps cravings manageable. If you don’t eat bagels or cake for weeks on end, when you do eventually succumb to carbs it’s going to get messy! The same goes for sugars and sweets. Death by Smarties is not a nice way to go. Eat a little cleaner in the week. Life doesn’t have to be all green veg and fish. Save the weekends for your favourite pasta dish or pizza outing and keep it clean-ish from Monday to Friday.

Do not resolve to be a better person

Could you be more self-deprecating than committing to being a better person? Does that mean for the past however many years you have been

alive on this earth you have been a k*k person? Absolutely not. Resolving to be a better person is vague and precarious. It alters your mindset to believe you are not good enough.

Rather do this:

Resolve to do a little better: Whether it’s being more patient with your colleagues or improving your golf swing, aim for smaller, measurable improvements that won’t land you on the shrink’s couch. Be kind to yourself. Before you decide to overhaul yourself, take some selfstock on the things that make you rock. Then rock them harder.

Do not resolve to expedite anything

Whether you think 2019 is the year to get married, have kids, move in together or start a new job, trust us when we tell you that doing any of these things for the sake of it being a new year is a terrible idea. These are the milestones of your life that should happen in their own time – when all the necessary people and circumstances are good and ready.

In the meantime, rather use the new year to mull over these important aspects of your life:

holiday season but don’t let that trick you into thinking you are bored at work and about to hit a ceiling. Chat to your manager about possible growth opportunities and what you’d like to achieve first. That’s a whole lot of things not to resolve to do as the new year comes in which begs the question, what should you resolve to do?

Relationship check: Are you in the right relationship and still enjoying each other’s company? Go into the new year open to the idea that your current relationship could get more serious but don’t pressure yourself or your partner to make decisions you aren’t ready for. Maybe it’s a good time to plan a weekend away while the weather is still warm to see how you travel together?

Well we thought you’d never ask. As the new year rolls in, why not try these on for size:

Baby check: Could you financially afford to look after a small human

Spend more time with the people you love: No need to get

right now? Are you ready to give up your easy come and go social life and the ability to travel whenever you like? Don’t let the start of the New Year send your ovaries into over-drive just yet. Assess the stage of life in which you find yourself and chat to your partner?

Job check: Do you enjoy what you are doing and is there room to grow

to plan some fun things this year whether it’s going to a comedy show on occasion or board games with friends. This one’s easy.

fancy either. Catch up with friends and family over a braai at home on the weekends or a meal at your favourite restaurant.

Plan less and live more: It’s a cliché we know but it’s true. We

spend so much time planning and not nearly enough time kicking back and enjoying ourselves. So now that you’ve read this, forget about new year’s resolutions altogether and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

in your current role? It’s hard to get back into the swing of things after the

Everli Baby are suppliers of elegant babyand toddler-wear that is not only exquisite, stylish and comfortable but designed to last and to be passed down from one generation to the next. In celebration of their first birthday we sat down will this dynamic sister duo to find out more. K www.everlibaby.com Q @everlibaby E @everlibaby What was the main inspiration behind Everli Baby?  Our business idea initially came into being after spotting a gap in the market for perfect baby shower, birthday or Christening gifts. We’ve also always had a passion for fashion alongside an adoration for children. Combining our two loves resulted in the creation of Everli Baby. What’s a favourite piece in the collection and why? Our favourite piece has to be our first design, the Aurora Romper, as it showcases our unique Everli design (bubble cut knee length romper), with a touch of lace (short lace sleeves with a see-through lace back with scalloped edges in the middle and ties at the back).

The birth of a specific item in our range often starts with us falling in love with a piece of lace – from which an outfit is conceptualised, designed and crafted from there. Each item in our range is named after one of the cherubs we meet along the way. Dream collaboration or concept?  Our dream is to collaborate with an international public figure and to take our South African brand globally to showcase our country’s talent and handcraft quality.  What’s next for the brand?  We are launching our baby and toddler autumn/ winter range early next year and are currently designing other baby and toddler-related products which we are planning to launch mid-next year. ADD A GEM OR TWO THIS MONTH With Bespoke by Kate

B

Add a bit of sparkle to your back to work blues with some brand-new summer arm candy!

espoke by Kate, a proudly South African jewellery brand offers your summer accessory staples with their on-trend fine summer jewellery range that launched last year at a pop-up collaboration with exclusive local fashion label, DIANE-Paris. The range, which is available in 9ct white, yellow or rose gold features – a refreshing change from other local brands who rely on gold plating – is a mix of reinvented classics such as the trending gold hoops and modern, minimalist necklaces with diamonds and feature gemstones. Kate realised there was a gap in the market for affordable fine jewellery and launched her quality locally-crafted collection in 2016. She is a rising local designer and diamond specialist who has sought out the freshest in fine jewellery trends for the summer. Her range effortlessly combines bold statement pieces and minimalist, subtle styles with the best quality local diamonds, gemstones and metals. The summer range reimagines the classics into modern yet timeless pieces that cool girls can’t live without. “This summer’s hottest pieces are inspired by nature and life’s ‘imperfections’, think mismatched earrings and whimsical designs inspired by nature such as stars, moons and wishbones. The trend of customising one’s own jewellery is big so we have put together a range of necklaces and bracelets with pendants, disks and belcher chains that can be adjusted. Gemstones such as Swiss Blue Topaz and London Blue Topaz are trending so it’s wonderful to create pieces with gemstones with intricate features. Feminine, sophisticated and wellpriced quality pieces are my focus,” says Kate. The price range for the collection starts at R1700 and goes up to R23 000 with a bespoke jewellery design service also on offer. Hair Trends

There is nothing better than a new hairdo to help you put your best foot forward in the new year! We caught up with the power couple behind Beauty Lounge in Craighall - the go-to salon for most of the stars in Johannesburg - Refilwe and Sonnyboy to get a heads up on which styles will be trending in the new year.

 Pixy Cut Celebrity inspiration - Actress Zinhle Mabena of Isibaya soapie  This is a style for people who like to straighten their hair.  I t requires a weekly maintenance so it’s constantly fresh and on point.  You will need to do a full relaxer once a month.  Retouch your sides every two weeks.  Visit the salon for a deep conditioning and treatment twice a month.  This style can be dressed up or down.  You can jazz up your pixie cut with highlights.

T his group usually likes to take care of their own hair at home as there is less maintenance required with this style.  Shampoo and condition your hair weekly.  M oisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Especially if you like colouring your hair.  D o visit the salon at least once a month to get some professional advice.  T his is the perfect hairstyle to experiment with bold and bright colours because you are always cutting your hair.

Short and natural hair Celebrity inspiration - SA Idols judge Somizi Mhlongo

The Big Afro Celebrity inspiration - Actress and Puma Ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha  More and more people are going this route.  T his is a high maintenance ‘do’ and tends to lose moisture quickly especially in Johannesburg compared to coastal provinces.  Make sure to use a very moisturising shampoo and conditioner.  R ather use salon products instead of retail products to make sure you are giving your fro the attention it needs.  N ever skip your monthly salon visit because textures and curl types are different and need to be treated accordingly.  R ather stay away from colouring your hair if you are going to be investing your time and money to grow an afro because colour damages your hair.  Go for protective styles like braids in dry seasons.

Wig it Celebrity inspiration – Instagram influencer and style icon Kefilwe Mabote  A popular signature look for the trendy and classy lady.  M ore and more people are opting for a wig than weaving their hair to protect their hairlines.  It’s easier to buy different types of wigs in order to always keep your style fresh.  The trendy bob with sharp edges is still very popular.  Your wigs still need to visit the salon at least once a month for a full wash and deep conditioning.  Keep your wig on a mannequin so that it doesn’t lose its shape.  Take your wig in for blow drying and curls for special occasions.

The biggest trend right now for guys is the side fade. Make sure your edges are always trimmed for a neat look. Use a curling sponge to create that perfect coil. Very few men experiment with hair colour, but the brave should opt for brown or copper tips to create an ombre look.  Texturize your hair to get the perfect coil pattern.  Use moisturising gel to keep your hair in place.  Visit the salon once every two weeks.    

t’s chapter one of twelve, and the best way we know how to kick start the new year is with a pamper session. We recommend booking a few hours off after your beach holiday to get spoiled and coddled. Come on now who doesn’t love a good ol' beauty session? Especially if you want your feet and fingers to glow! This is the spot for you. This charming little salon is placed in one of the trendiest locations in the city, Parktown North and we adore this sunshine filled space because it is extremely affordable, but the quality of service, staff and products used are still of the highest standard. WOK N ROLL

Contemporary Asian cuisine in Africa

Wok n Roll opened doors in the heart of Sandton at The Marc and aims to attract customers from all cultures with a curiosity and love for a unique taste experience. It’s the same concept as the Pretoria branch only bigger and in our opinion better as the restaurant now seats 224 patrons, is double the size and boasts an exclusive menu and an upmarket and elegant atmosphere. Having been in the restaurant industry for over 10 years owner Lynne Wang and her husband - who was previously a sushi chef – had the recipe for success and ensured that the restaurant settled into a killer dance

22

Hello Joburg • January 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

almost instantly with everything flowing like clockwork. From the staff to the menu and every little detail in-between. The menu was developed around the most well-known dishes from various Asian countries but with a unique twist, that better caters to our local market. The menu consists of the Wok menu and the Roll menu which was created to offer something for everyone. There is everything from sushi without fish like the KFC roll and the Kobe roll to dishes for vegetarians that incorporate tasty ingredients like the Exotic Mushroom Roll. Both the sushi chef and the head chef come all the way from China and are exceptionally experienced and practised in their craft and every single ingredient on the menu is fresh! From the moment we set foot into the restaurant we were met with a friendly and hospitable presence. We were welcomed to our seat and offered prawn chips to start our mouth-watering food adventure - and boy was it an adventure! With a selection of Asian cuisine options that range from Asian styled tacos and soups to curries and traditional ramen. There’s also (obviously) fried noodles and rice dishes, plus delectable desserts. We honestly didn’t know where to

start. Sushi is non-negotiable at this spot and we recommend the 911 Roll. It’s made with fresh tuna flown in from Cape Town, topped with crispy fried onions and spicy Sriracha sauce. The sushi rice is imported from Japan. For mains try the Korean Cold Noodle dish that’s especially perfect on a hot summer’s day- it's refreshing and so yummy you’ll want to lick the bowl! Oh, and don’t leave without trying the Dim Sum! Made fresh daily with a variety of luxury fillings - think cream cheese and spinach or langoustine and chives – you won’t be disappointed! And what would a glorious food adventure be without dessert? We indulged in deep fried ice-cream that was perfectly coated, fried to perfection and drizzled with the most delicious chocolate sauce we’ve ever tasted. No matter what you chose you can be assured that Wok n Roll will bring the real taste of Asia to Africa! hen a new dining establishment opens in Jozi, we are sure to sit up and take notice - and thank goodness we did! Having landed on the streets of Jozi, all the way from the Jacaranda City, this contemporary Asian restaurant sure turns heads. With its modern and aesthetically pleasing design and décor that gives a great first impression, to the impressive menu offering and oh-so-delicious sushi, this spot has quickly become a local favourite amongst culinary enthusiasts and Asian food lovers alike.

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… TORTELLINO D’ORO

W

hether you’re wanting to take a pasta-loving date to one of Joburg’s most romantic restaurants or are craving authentic Neapolitan style pizza where the owners have done their homework, there’s one restaurant that always comes to mind: Tortellino D’Oro in Oaklands. But does this 22-year-old trattoria still live up to its reputation? I decided to pay it a visit to find out. The name translates to golden pasta shaped as a belly button – a reference to owner Dante’s memories of growing up eating real Italian food that only his mother could make. Upon stepping inside the restaurant, a sense of old-world charm comes over you – think well-worn wooden tables, dangling copper cookware, flickering lamps and shelves stocked with indulgences like fine wines and sweet loaves of panettone. My dinner date and I arrived on a Friday night and opted for a table inside the main dining room for an evening of candlelit romance. Italian ingredients from the on-site deli shape the menu, from homemade fettuccine and trenette to mortadella and salami. To start, we ordered the Crostini – French loaf with sliced mozzarella and tomato, and an olive pâté sauce. The warm country bread was a delight dunked in the imported olive oil on the table. For mains, we ordered two pasta dishes to share – the homemade spinach panzerotti in a butter and sage sauce, and the famous tortellini with a mixed filling of Parma ham, mortadella, chicken and parmesan in a cream and mushroom sauce. We had no trouble finding a wine to match our meal – Tortellino D’Oro’s list is concise but works well with the menu. After placing our main meal orders, we started regretting having ordered a carbheavy starter, but when the pasta arrived, we were surprised by how small the portions were. Even though they weren’t as generous as I remembered, the pasta was as excellent as ever – evidently made with love and served in a sauce that will make you want to lick your plate clean! We finished off our meal with a scoop of pistachio ice cream – which comes served in an ice cup with almond biscotti. The gelato was so moreish that it made us stop by the deli to buy a tub to take home on our way out ... no regrets there! It now makes sense why it’s still difficult to snag a reservation at Tortellino D’Oro on weekends. It’s simply amore al primo morso – love at first bite!

THOM HUGHES, MARTIN JAKOBY AND CHRISTA AND GRANT ANSELL

A Streetbar Named Desire

Green with envy…laden with desire. A trendy tapas bar that is turning up the heat. They say that the starting point of all achievement is desire, and when four friends came together with a desire to build a bar, this gorgeous green emerald was birthed. Celebrated for concepts that have inspired cult followings like The Attic, The Office and more recently Perron, business partners and friends Thom Hughes, Martin Jakoby and Christa and Grant Ansell have poured their personalities and passion into A Streetbar Named Desire; born out of a desire to build a place that they’d like to go to.

ombining their individual experiences abroad, they have curated a unique space and a cohesive concept that speaks to people’s imaginations, whilst offering an experience that is both communal and comfortable. Displaying an abundance of creative thought, the location was definitely the drawcard for this fantastic four and the reward? A rooftop deck for Joburgers to sip sour cherry mojitos over shared plates, while the sun sets over the city of gold.

in Harissa paste, washed down with an activated charcoal and black sesame orgeat cocktail, known as The Dark Side.

With its name based on the play by Tennessee Williams and nuanced with New Orleans opulence, the 1950s style is evoked through the plush velvet seating, complete with tassels, juxtaposed with the modern marble bar and accented by quirky hand sketched napkins.

With a menu inspired by some of their favourite London institutions including Morito, Caravan and Ottolenghi, you can expect some of the best food in Johannesburg with a Modern European, Middle Eastern inspired tapas menu. Think fresh and colourful Palestinian street food, awash with flavour and spice, served on eclectic earthenware clay plates.

Sophisticated and original, there is something that appeals to everyone, with an inherent playfulness from the menu to the management, offering guests an intimate experience of everything you could want in a bar and then some. For Executive Chef Thom Hughes, who has extensive experience in both the US and UK, and Business Partner Martin Jakoby, this is a project that they spearheaded. They both highly recommend the sirloin steak marinated

For Christa and Grant Ansell, their adventure back to South Africa, after living in London, inspired them to open something that shared a soupçon of their travels, both after the Camino De Santiago, where they experienced Pintxos in San Sebastian and their discovery of Gözleme in Turkey.

Wanting to do something different, this was a space the awesome foursome stumbled upon; and have transformed an empty shell with shades of gorgeous green, filling it with people and loads of personality. 144 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood m 011 268 6485 1 www..streetbar.co.za Hello Joburg • January 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

chef OF THE MONTH

TREVOR BOYD

He started off as a ‘rough diamond’ that was polished under the guidance of Garth Strobel at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town. Today, he heads up the National Culinary Team of South Africa who will be participating in the IKA Culinary Olympics in 2020. Meet the Michelangelo Hotel’s executive chef, Trevor Boyd.

However, Trevor’s culinary style today is anything but clichéd. He’s worked his way up the ranks, from a trainee to an executive chef, to get to where he is now. Trevor says his first real influence was Garth Strobel, who afforded him the privilege to work for him at the Mount Nelson Hotel in the Cape. “He was the polish on a rough diamond that he’d found,” he says. In his culinary competition world, Trevor says Garth Shnier, the Sandton Sun’s executive

26

chef, has been his all-time pillar of strength, motivation and discipline. “I’ll forever be indebted to both these great men.” While he doesn’t really have a favourite cuisine, Trevor says what he truly appreciates is wholesome, uncomplicated food. “I believe I can cook any cuisine, but South African food and flavours are close to my heart and I love that I know how to cook food from my own country,” he says. That being said, he does have a best-loved summertime dish – dukkah-spiced Mauritian sea bass with textures of apple and citrus aioli. “It’s the perfect balance of protein and fruit on a plate – fresh, healthy and light.” His wine of choice is the KWV The Mentors Grenache Blanc – a refreshing sip with aromas of orange peel, mandarin and Granny Smith apples. At the Michelangelo Hotel’s Piccolo Mondo fine-dining restaurant, all menus start and end with Trevor, but in-between, the exciting development takes place. “All staff members are given the opportunity to be involved and

to strategise, but I approve all recipes and costs,” he explains. Trevor currently has about 36 employees who report to him and firmly believes that there’s power within a team and that it’s vital to have a good understanding between back-of-the-house and front-of-thehouse operations. In his opinion, the key to achieving this is maintaining a good sense of humour. “That’s the most important aspect to my day – if you can’t laugh at yourself, those around you and difficult situations, you’ll always struggle through the bad times.” When Trevor isn’t cooking up a storm, he’s kicking back with his partner in crime, Angelique, and his beagle puppy AKA his ‘little devil’, Nutmeg. Chef Trevor’s story of why he decided to become a chef is decidedly clichéd. “Being the youngest in my family, I spent most of my time at home in the kitchen with my mother, who spent hours on end cooking for our large family. My love for the kitchen developed in those early years,” he says. He attended WITS Technikon, where he completed a National Diploma in Catering Management. “I loved that I was finally learning about something that interested me. I did really well at hotel school, whereas I performed poorly in high school,” he laughs.

KAYLEE'S EATERY BEDFORDVIEW

100% plant-based and even a delight for cautious carnivores!

Allow us to introduce the latest neighbourhood gem in Bedfordview. Yes, we know it’s most probably a schlep for you too (our offices are in Craighall) but it’s a schlep worth making. And we know veganism is usually met with a tone of condescension, a haughtiness of higher moral standards, however, this is not what this eater y is about. Rather it’s about embracing all people who want to eat ethically (even dare we include the carnivores). Also, do not believe the deceptions, being vegan does not mean eating rabbit food or crunching on mind-numbing leaf creations, and Kaylee's is living proof of that.

T

he most difficult part of being vegan is waking up at 6h00 to milk the almonds. But with Kaylee's in your corner there is no need for such insanity. Rather drive by and pick up one of their garden-fresh seasonal smoothies. If calories don’t count, try the Banana Snickers and if you’re more on the health-conscious side of life try the Bali Green. You can also try one of their steaming hot lattes with almond milk, beetroot, turmeric or Kaylee's famous hot chocolate. Post smoothie you might be guilty of dreaming of a glossy smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel or a mushy decadent chocolate cake with an abundance of shiny, silky icing. Don’t fret because both these items are on the menu, vegan style. The Lox Bagel is the invention of Josh Simon head chef and is sheer genius if you ask us. This baked beauty is shmeared with vegan cream cheese, smoked papaya ribbons that smell and taste like salmon, chives and capers, it’s a textural and flavorful winner; it’s basically fireworks in your mouth. Next up is the vegan chocolate cake, just as impressive. It’s dairy free, yet it’s the creamiest, richest and softest sponge cake you’ll ever eat. Converting to veganism yet? They’re open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, drinks and coffee and they’ll soon be opening a beautiful exposed area that’s pet-friendly! FINE WINE ON A BUDGET Because the only thing worse than bad wine is no wine!

They say that life is too short to drink bad wine, so it seems we have a dilemma on our hands. January is tough and at this point, most of us are tightening our belts and waiting desperately for our first paycheck, so drinking top quality wine on a reasonable budget feels impossible. While most Joburg restaurants and boutique wine stores cater to a deeppocketed clientele, we’ve found some budget-friendly wines that taste expensive – or will at least fool your friends who think they know what expensive vino tastes like. Villiera Chenin Blanc 2018

Price and where it’s available? R58 from www.bottleshop.co.za What makes this a ‘fine wine’ despite the price? Villiera’s Chenin Blanc doesn’t have a reputation for being one of SA’s best value wines for nothing! It covers various price points, but the 2018 bottle is almost as fine as the vintages with intense notes of fruit and honey with a hint of wood spice on the nose. Would anyone guess that this is a budget wine? Not a chance. Villiera is synonymous with award-winning wines, from the Gold Wine Awards to the Gilbert and Gaillard International Challenge. As soon as your guests see the name on the bottle, they won’t even look at far as the year! Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? At the pool on 54 on Bath’s rooftop garden in Rosebank. What dish would you pair this wine with? Oysters, grilled white fish and prawns, savoury canapés, creamy white cheeses and the list goes on. Value for money from 1 to 10? 8/10

Hill & Dale Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Price and where it’s available? R72 from www.bottleshop.co.za What makes this a ‘fine wine’ despite the price? This deep, rich ruby-hued wine has amazing ageing potential – you can enjoy it now or experience its complexities enhanced with a further 36 to 60 months of cellaring. Plus, it’s the perfect balance of opulence and restraints. Its simple fruitiness is backed up by a food-friendly, elegant and lingering aftertaste. Would anyone guess that this is a budget wine? Hill & Dale wines are made at the Stellenzicht cellar from grapes harvested from vineyards around Stellenbosch, arguably the most famous wine region in the country – so definitely not. Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? At one of James Diack’s sustainable eateries in The Parks. What dish would you pair this wine with? A simple spaghetti bolognaise or a smoked pulled-pork burger. Value for money from 1 to 10? 10/10

They poured their hearts, souls and great dollops of generosity into every bottle. Where would you drink this wine in Jozi? Sunday Soirees at the Living Room in Maboneng watching the sunset. SURVIVING DRY JANUARY Yes, there are 31 days in sober January, but you’ll be able to make it!

Many people are hopping on the dry January bandwagon. If you’re one of them, you may be concerned that you’ll quickly find yourself at a loss for alcohol-free things to do. Worry not – there are plenty of ways to embrace sober Joburg! We’ve rounded up the best ways to keep busy, have fun and get fit (and with no hangover the next day!).

Come January, adulting is harder than ever. Your alarm is set to go #backtowork, your sleep routine is wrecked, and you’ve set yourself some unattainable New Year’s resolutions. If you ask us, there’s no better time to unleash your inner child! Forget about that Monday morning meeting or dreaded commute and fly through the air and bounce off the walls at BOUNCE Inc, a massive indoor trampoline park where the wall becomes the floor, a slam-dunk is within your grasp and the rules of gravity no longer apply.

Most astonishingly amazing things to do in Jozi this month. Say toodaloo to the Januar y blues. We refuse to start yet another year with our smiles turned upside down. This year we are all about new year, new you and we’ll ensure 2019 is the best year yet!

1

Visit a brand-new eatery Where we recommend: ZIO La Famiglia restaurant. Sometimes visiting a fresh new place makes you feel brand new and this Italian Bistro in Hyde Square; Hyde Park ticks all the right boxes. They take no bookings. This super cool trendy new hotspot is open for lunch and dinner and serves delicious beef and lamb burgers, a fabulous seared tuna salad glazed with a teriyaki sauce and plus, any restaurant with plants on the walls instantly gets a thumbs up from us! Q @ziobistro K www.ziorestaurant.co.za

2

Grab a cocktail and watch the most magical sunset Where we recommend: The Living Room, Maboneng.

Is there anything better than coming home after a holiday session and being inspired by an urban rooftop jungle café? Plus, we all know about their famous Sunday soirees

We recommend: Attempting a cooking class at Taste Buds in Sundowner. This cooking club will turn you into a foodie if you aren’t one already. Did you know that trends show that more and more South Africans consider themselves “foodies”? So, this is the perfect excuse to get those bare feet into the kitchen and start frying up a storm. They offer weekly courses and classes from Chinese to Mexican Fiesta to Sushi classes and even offer romantic couples’ evenings. K www.taste-buds.co.za

Rediscover your hometown

Words Bianca Spinner Images Supplied.

What we recommend: trying a cycle tour or picnic up to the top of Africa at the Carlton Centre building on the 50th floor (R300pp) or attempting the inner-city urban hiking tour (R400) with Mainstreetwalks.

5

Mainstreetwalks is a concept that encourages people to re-experience the inner city and ultimately Joburg. The best way to explore these spaces, like any other city in the world, is by foot and public transport. This is the best way to fall in love with the city and its people all over again. They take a maximum of 25-30 guests per trip so they’re small, intimate and educational and most importantly FUN! K @mainstreetwalks K www.mainstreetwalks.co.za

HOW TO SLAY YOUR NIGHT NERD and other ways to get out more! After the festive season, some people like to tone down their nightlife for something a little tamer and more economical. Think Netflix and chill! Others, like some of our HJ readers, are planning to spice things up by venturing further than their local pub or drinking something other than beer this year. Here are some tips to welcome the night in 2019. Try something new

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied.

Humans are creatures of habit. We get to the bar and order the same drink we always order. You know how it tastes. You know what it costs and most importantly you know how it makes you feel after you’ve had three. But it’s always the same drink. So how about ordering something different? s Saffers love our wine. And for good reason U as one of the world’s best producers. But we’re embracing new things this year so how about a little of the Japanese variety? Made from fermented rice, sake comes in a range of flavours. Depending on what you go for, you can have it chilled or warm – and either way comes with its own special naming convention. There are basically two different ways to enjoy your sake: Hiya and Atsukan. Hiya means cold style and you refrigerate the sake. On the other hand, Atuskan is a heated style, for which you

heat the sake in a pan with hot water. Both hot sake and cold sake are delicious! espite the name, The Old Fashioned is D actually still kind of new for most South African palates. Recently revived on shows like Mad Men – a favourite of Don Draper’s, this one’s a classic. Especially for the person who likes their whisky on the sweeter side. And if you can’t take the boy away from the beer, then rather than the usual draft you order why not try one of the many craft options on the menu next time?

Go somewhere else It’s so much easier to meet mates at the bar or pub around the corner so you can roll home quickly. But we live in the age of Uber so there’s no reason not to venture a little further than usual. Reasons to try new places include: Meet new people: Especially for the singletons.

We all know what the definition of crazy is right? So, if you are going to the same places and hanging out with the same people night in and night out, well then, your chances of meeting a new love interest are far less likely. Be that friend people want to call: You know the one who knows what’s hip and happening? Be that friend in 2019. But in order to do that, best you know where all the cool spots are. Start by reading our mag monthly #justsaying.

Chew some fat This is not an invitation to stuff wet, fatty biltong in your mouth from the bar snacks plate. Hell no! But if your usual MO is to go to a bar, buy a drink and sit at the bar feeling sorry for yourself than how about getting a grip this year? Find a wing-mate if you must or chat to other single people but just get out of your comfort zone and do it! Hello Joburg • January 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Poison

OF THE MONTH icetropez

About: icetropez launched in South Africa in 2012 and since then has taken the country by storm disrupting the perception that wine coolers are cheap, sweet and only available for consumption in bright colours. Both appealing in flavour and design, the chic packaging can be attributed to the talents and sharp eye of Christophe Pillet, a successful French designer who has worked with household brands that include Lancôme, Shiseido and Whirlpool. Cool fact: Over recent years the popular wine cocktail has risen through the tough economic climate as a luxury indulgence enjoyed by many. The popular cocktail has gained influence with celebrities such as local rapper DA Les and Idols SA judge Somizi, snapping pics on social media with the drink. How it’s made: icetropez launched with two 275ml variants namely, icetropez 6,5% and icetropez 0%. icetropez 6,5% is made from wine courtesy of the Domain Tropez vineyard situated in St Tropez. ❶ Flavours: The wine is blended with the fragrant flavours of peach and infused with carbonated water. icetropez 0% is the non-alcoholic equivalent. 0% has the colour, the smell, and the taste of the original wine cocktail but the wine base has been replaced by a grape ‘mout’, juice. Available from: The range is currently sold in selected Woolworths, Makro, Tops @ Spar, Pick n Pay liquors, Liquor City, Blue Bottle Liquor, Norman Goodfellow, Ultra Liquors stores and Tashas restaurants nationwide. arts&culture GET YOUR ARTS AND CULTURE ON start the new year with creative flair!

This is not a new year’s resolution by any means. Hell No! If you want to know what we think about those turn to page 6. Rather this is an appeal to start 2019 with some creative flair, a dash of inspiration and some fun. So, what’s the arty deal anyway? Even if you don’t swan in arty farty circles, perhaps you’ve seen a billboard near Montecasino, heard an ad on radio or read a review online. Master Harold and The Boys, John Vlismas, William Kentridge, Disney on Ice? – ring a bell? Well, that’s what we’re talking about.

So, what? Good question. Even if you’ve never seen a play or attended a pottery class, there’s nothing stopping you from starting. And here’s why you should!  Be Smarter! It’s a fact, by engrossing yourself in the world of arts and culture, whatever aspect you chose you are bound to learn something new and interesting. Whether it’s just the words to a catchy song from a well-known play on at the Teatro, a few details about an old dead poet (#ShakespeareWasCool), local politics from a witty comedian or something you didn’t know about the country you live in from a period play about South Africa – we challenge the person who leaves such an engagement none the wiser!  Be more social: Arts and culture is really a big wide world that has a place for everyone so it’s certainly something you can do with family and

46

friends. Whether it’s attending a live music show with work colleagues or taking your kids to the annual Pantomime, spending some non-traditional screen time is a great way to bond, relax and have fun in today’s world of gloomy twitter feeds.  Be more economical: While we may love to travel to faraway places, such indulgences can burn a hole in your pocket so early in new year. Going to see a band play won’t break the bank and, in some cases, gallery exhibitions are for mahala. Enjoy a night out with friends and family and even a drink afterwards. Where to go (for arts and culture virgins)  In the mood for some soulful Jazz? Visit The Orbit at 81 De Korte St. Braamfontein.  Local theatre anyone? Try the Market Theatre in Newtown.  A few laughs? Book a seat at the Goliath Comedy Blub in Melrose Arch.  Keen to learn to Zumba? Convenient

CONFERENCING IN SANDTON

Help delegates avoid congestion in and around the CBD

Michelangelo Hotel

When planning a conference in Sandton, one major factor that professional conference organisers (PCOs) need to consider is that the bustling hub never really has a ‘downtime’, so traffic and parking can be problematic all year round. One solution to this problem is to opt for a venue within 1km of the Sandton Gautrain Station, located deep beneath Rivonia Road with a pedestrian entrance on the corner of Rivonia Road and West Street. This way, delegates will be able to park their car, take the train and walk to the venue. Just a one-minute walk from the station, the five-star Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel is possibly the most convenient venue for walkers. The hotel offers 220 rooms and suites, each with free high-speed wireless Internet, as well as seven meeting rooms and two boardrooms, all of which are equipped with free Wi-Fi and the latest audio-visual technology. The largest meeting space can host up to 600 delegates. In-between or after conferencing sessions, delegates can refresh in the hotel’s on-site bar and restaurant offering authentic South African cuisine, fun mixed drinks and local wines. There’s also a fitness centre on the 10th floor that offers guests a workout with a view and an outdoor swimming pool that’s the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day. THE 7 WONDERS of January in Joburg

There are so, so many reasons to fall in love with Joburg and its surroundings at the start of the New Year. Sensational scenery, summertime sunshine and a city so vibrant and jam-packed with oomph, it’s intoxicating. We beg you not to sit on the couch and laze about, rather opt for one of these affordable staycations; they’ll transform your year. 1. Camp at Mountain Sanctuary Park Where: Magaliesburg Do it because: This privately-owned nature reserve is calling your name. Firstly, it is ridiculously affordable; secondly, you can opt to go for a day visit at just R50 per vehicle. We recommend pitching a tent, lighting a campfire, roasting marshmallows and indulging in a guided hike over a two-night stay at R200 per adult on weekends and R130 midweek. We love the three-hour guided hike option and you can swim in the natural pools and enjoy a bountiful braai. What motivates you the most? There are many things that drive me to succeed. I have always had a very strong internal motivation to be the best I can be in any and all areas of my life. However, from a young age, I realised that I get fulfilment from helping others. So, it’s a great combination of internal and external motivation for me. There is always a next level and it’s a fine balance between finding happiness in the moment but also allowing the drive for more to push you further. One item you can’t leave the house without? My Nomatic backpack. Because it contains my headphones, wallet, mobile phone, a few books and my laptop. What’s the last thing you watched/listened to? I’ve been watching Shark Tank USA reruns and listening to the new Fall Out Boy album. Three healthy habits that you practise every day?  I make sure to get enough sleep. Perhaps the most important productivity

hack. This means that I am in bed at 22h00 every night. Not negotiable.  I n the morning I have a routine that prepares me mentally for the day. It starts with a cup of coffee, meditation, journaling, and a visualisation practice.  M ost of my work is done sitting down. When I am writing or coaching, I can spend hours in my chair. So, I schedule regular breaks to get up, stretch, and take a couple of practice golf swings. We must oscillate between rest and performance. The hardest part about writing your book Acta Non Verba?  In my case the book writing process was atypical. In 2014 I started writing a daily email about leadership, high-performance, and personal development. It was a way to communicate my message to the world. My subscriber base grew rapidly so I kept writing the emails. At the time of this interview, I have written 778 emails. The book is a collection of 165 of the best emails that I have written. The truth is that on some days writing has been easy and on other days it has been torture. This is the reality for all creative endeavours. In your opinion what is the key to success? There are many, and they are all cliché. So, perhaps the key to success is exactly that. To embrace the clichés. All the things that you have ever been told about being successful that has not seemed that “sexy” to you. Things like working consistently, curating the people you spend your time with, seeking out feedback and being ok with failure. What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs? I’d say that entrepreneurs need to develop and blend three skills:  D oing. Entrepreneurs tend to get stuck in research mode. Not because they need information but because they fear failure. Less research, more doing.  F oster a community. Loneliness is a common theme for entrepreneurs. Find a coach or community to support you.  P ersonal and professional development. If you neglect your own development, then you will become the bottleneck in your business. You are the amplifier.
