lifestyle Grabbing a bite on the go at A new dawn in public transport has begun and Gauteng now boasts the first rapid rail transport system in Africa: The Gautrain. In June 2010, the 24 billion rand Gautrain took to the rails for the first time, offering safe, reliable and comfortable public transport.

oburgers fill with pride and joy whenever anyone mentions the Gautrain. But what’s public transport without food on the go? Sustenance plays a pivotal role for us Joburgers and we felt compelled to share our must try food stops at the Sandton Gautrain Station. Roast Coffees Our very first stop when visiting the station would have to be Roast Coffees because your morning could never be complete without a cup of warm, whole hearted coffee. They also have gourmet sarmies to go like the ham, emmental and peach preserve sarm or the pea pesto and chicken Panini. Apparently their blue cheese burger is also delicious! Jacob, their barrister, is the perfect treat for a gloomy morning because service with a smile is always guaranteed! We love that they use traditional methods to bring to life authentic coffee and let's be honest, caffeine and friends make the perfect blend.

The exhibition entitled History will Break your Heart will be taking place from 15 April to 18 June 2016 and will showcase works by Kemang Wa Lehulere, Ernest Mancoba and Gladys Mgudlandlu, as well as works made in collaboration with the artist’s aunt, Sophia Lehulere. The exhibition takes its cue from the works of South African artists Ernest Mancoba, Gladys Mgudlandlu, and writer Rolfes Robert Reginald ‘R.R.R’ Dhlomo. Employing narratives of remembering and re-enactment, the exhibition presents the fractured personal stories of these artists in relation to Wa Lehulere’s own work, and questions the detrimental effects of society’s collective memory on the lives of these artists. 5 www.standardbankarts.com

an essential item for your winter wardrobe is a coat. Coats are usually seen as functional outerwear items: an additional layer to keep the cold away. However, recent local and international fashion collections have shown us a multitude of ways in which to wear this everyday item. They have become the new essential fashion “must have”. The more traditional coats (such as an ordinary raincoat) can be paired with sporty elements to create a hybrid look that will be incredibly trendy this season. Lightweight, easy-to-wear coats can be used as an additional layer to your traditional winter look; heavier coats with more attention to detail and embellishment can almost be worn as a statement look on their own. Pair a coat with your favourite pair of denims and a turtleneck to create a timeless Autumn/Winter look. When shopping, look out for interesting details such as asymmetry and vivid colours. Eye-catching detail such as seen on this Ermenegildo Zegna coat elevates an otherwise ordinary item.

Adrienne Hersch Properties
- a family legacy 25 years in the making
Adrienne Hersch built her company from the ground up, hammering her first SOLD sign into the ground 25 years ago. To create something from nothing is indeed a success story, but to sustain it, grow it year on year and share its fruits with family and community – well, that is a legacy. And there-in lies the story of Adrienne Hersch Properties. The business of people Founded in 1991 as a valuations, property sales and Brokerage Company, today Adrienne Hersch Properties prides itself as being one of the largest privately owned property agencies in Gauteng - but to what does the company accredit its success?
Younger son and Brand Manager for the family business, Ari Hersch adds, “The Adrienne Hersch Properties brand and our immediate family are synonymous. Our combined reputation means more to us than Rands and Cents. Integrity is a bi-word of how we do business, and it is this philosophy that has moulded our culture into one that allows every member of staff, regardless of position or stature, to make a difference to other people’s lives. In a people-centred culture, our people are celebrated for their unique contribution.”
Family who work together Ari and Daniel joined the business in 2011 and 2014 respectively and come not only with their mother’s tenacity and business acumen but between them a plot of skills that include design and architectural experience, media and marketing as well as legal expertise.
8
Ari previously worked in Cape Town for one of the leading South African architectural firms. In 2011 he joined the family business in the role of Brand Manager overseeing all brand initiatives, corporate marketing material and projects. The interactive nature of the real estate industry dictates that our worth as a Company and as a Brand is defined by the relationships that we build. an Advocate at the Johannesburg Bar, Adrienne Hersch Properties couldn’t be in better legal hands than Daniel’s. As for family business dynamics? Do they clash or bump heads? Like all families who care about each other, we imagine certain topics will be hashed out harder than others but the respect and collaborative spirit between the brothers is palpable. The value that each brother brings to the business is recognised wholly by the other. “I cannot over emphasise the impact of Ari’s contribution, especially with regard to the revamp of the brand,” says older brother Daniel. And what does Ari have to say about Daniel? “With his experience on the Bar and under my mother’s guidance, he is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with.”

Of course it’s about vision and good business acumen and all that good stuff that comes with a solid work ethic but there’s more to it than the basics. “The interactive nature of the real estate industry dictates that our worth as a company and as a Brand is defined by the relationships that we build. In fact, if I have learnt anything from our mother, is that our core business is not property; property is simply a bi-product. Our business is people, and as such, our success will always be measured by service coming before reward,” says Daniel Hersch, who now heads up business development and legal for his mother’s namesake.

The challenge at hand On the 8 of May, AHP will be hosting their second annual Amazing Race/Adrienne Hersch Challenge to mark the significance of Mother’s Day personally and community wide. In the spirit of family and community and to celebrate some of the beautiful suburbs in which we live, all are invited to sign up for the road race. This year sees a brand-new route on the cards, designed to thrill with big prizes up for grabs. The event also features a 10 km event and a 5 km Fun Run. The famous Nappy Dash is free this year, so everyone can participate. th
“As a family-led business, nothing is more important to us than taking care of each other and our ethos has always been to support local communities in the areas in which we
operate. With that in mind, we are introducing the Adrienne Hersch Challenge – designed to bring families together,” says Adrienne. For those looking to register they can do so online at www.entrytime.com or they can do so at our Olivedale branch in the All Saints Centre or at the Randburg Harriers running club. As for the challenges that lie ahead, (this is an ever-evolving game the brothers tell us, and that every day is different) but it’s clear this duo, together with their AHP matriarch, are poised for more exciting things. Stay tuned! 5 www.ahprop.co.za f Adrienne Hersch Properties T @ahprop
A view from inside Besides their good looks and ridiculous charm, we picked Daniel and Ari’s brains on the property game.
So when it comes to franchising, how do you balance growing the brand with guarding its heritage? The concept of franchising is a minefield on its own. If I have to be honest, I would rather have one or two successful franchisees that are with us for life and who share our same values than have countless franchisees that fail. It’s for this reason that we are extremely thorough in our evaluation of candidates that wish to partner with us. At the end of the day it’s our name on the board. Any advice for those who want to play in the property game. Selling property is more than an 8 - 5 job. It’s a lifestyle which requires a high level of passion, personal effectiveness and long-term commitment. In this industry, patience and perseverance will become part and parcel of your daily life. Any tips for first time buyers. The old cliché still rings true. Location, Location, Location. However, if I can add one little proviso to that is that in today’s tough times it's location, Location, within your means. Any local property trends you can share? It’s no secret the country is going through interesting times both politically and economically. Raised interest rates and an ever-depreciating rand is definitely starting to effect affordability, especially when it comes to mortgage repayments. What this means from a sales perspective is that there could be some really good deals coming onto the market pretty soon.

Moda's ia La Vtop tips to keep your leather
handbags looking beautiful for years
When in use • Keep liquids, such as make-up and creams in a separate bag inside your handbag to avoid spillage on the lining. • Always put pens in a penholder and be careful with a pen in your hand. Pen marks generally don’t come out, so it is best to avoid them altogether. • When placing your bag in the car, ensure that it is in a secure place. You don’t want it to fall over and roll around as it causes scuff marks and can potentially damage the leather. • Avoid placing handbags on the floor – even though good bags mostly have studs protecting the bottom, the floor is still an unfriendly place for handbags to be placed, as it may be stood on or kicked over. Storage • Keep your handbags in the dust bags they originally come in when they’re not used. This protects the leather from being scuffed and also protects it from light that may cause discolouring over time.
• Keep bags stuffed in order to keep its shape. Bags can easily cave in and change shape when empty. Use plain, soft, undyed paper such as tissue paper if you no longer have the original stuffing. • Keep bags on a dedicated bag shelve. This ensures that bags are not squashed on top of each other – getting scuffed or losing shape. When hanging bags on a hook, gradual wear and tear is caused on the handles, and may even stretch the handles over time. What to do when your handbag gets wet A downpour may catch you off guard, forcing you to find shelter under your ever faithful leather handbag. If you’re left with a dry hairdo but a wet leather handbag, follow these steps: • Don’t panic! Some bags may go darker due to the water - it should restore back to its original colour in most cases.
• Empty the contents of your bag and stuff it with paper in order to keep the shape. • Put your bag in a dry place away from sunlight and leave it to dry - depending on how wet your bag is, this may take a few days. • DO NOT put your bag in the sun or expose it to heat such as hairdryers, sunlight, ovens or microwaves. - A hidden gem in the heart of Joburg's historic Newtown Precinct
L
ocated on the outskirts of the hip and trendy Newtown Junction, just behind the Market Theatre, The Potato Shed has a truly fascinating history. The aptly named restaurant is housed in an actual 1911 potato shed that served as a traders market during the early 20th century, before being abandoned. From the moment you enter this unique eatery, you know that you are in for an absolutely unrivalled experience. The décor can probably be best described as steam-punk, a new trend of repurposing materials for décor, and combines certain historic features with more modern elements, giving it an authentic but edgy feel. Gorgeous parquet floors and bespoke tiles from the original structure, have been used, and the attention to detail throughout the restaurant is truly impressive.

The restaurant is spacious and clientele can choose between the indoor and outdoor dining areas. The bar area, which serves as a stunning focal point, is trendy and well stocked, and boasts a wide selection of popular craft beers and unrivalled cocktails, including keg, bottled, barrel-aged and fresh cocktails. In keeping with the theme of the eatery, cocktails have innovative names such as Precious Cargo, Tracks of Hope and The Yellow Train. With a vast menu boasting some very creative and unique dishes, you will be spoilt for choice. Although potatoes, in many shapes and forms, are certainly prominent on the menu, there are a great many other options to choose from, including Wasabi crisps, wood oven jaffles and some innovative bunny chows. The succulent pulled pork belly – an 8 hour braised belly cooked with Chinese 5 spice, orange, ginger, marmalade glaze and mustard soy sauce complete with crispy pork cracking, which comes highly recommended, is absolutely mouth watering. An interesting addition to The Potato Shed is their curing room, where they make all of their own biltong that you can find on the menu. They also pride themselves on their extensive knowledge of the fine art of pickling. You will find that they have a huge number of tasty pickled and preserved sides that accompany their delicious mains. Absolutely nothing beats the experience of sampling mouth-watering dishes and glorious cocktails in one of Jozi’s original historic buildings. dining out Wine and cheese or coffee and chocolate make delicious sense when it comes to the notion of pairing flavours, textures and tastes. But it might be hard to imagine that beer can pair well with anything else besides rugby, big okes and biltong.
A
t the SAB World of Beer, Anton Erasmus, SAB trade brewer is on a mission to re-educate South Africans about how, why and when they drink their favourite liquid gold with a series of beer and food pairings currently underway. Hello Joburg attended a five-course food and beer pairing lunch recently which blew us away and had us rolling out the front door. So we asked Anton was the deal was? Why should people come along and try out one of these pairings (besides the fact that it’s so yum of course). According to Anton (and we can confirm this) “It is social, fun, convivial, entertaining and one can learn a lot.” While he says we are at the early adoption phase as far as learning this new branch of the beer game in South African, visitors can take the learnings away and put on a beer/ food matching at home with friends as well. “Beer styles, craft and beer history is all up for grabs”.

Beer is the great leveller and is strongly growing unisex appeal quirky and integrated multi-media tours from the history of beer to the making of it. Truth be told, this tour isn’t just for the tourists snapping away and taking selfies but as much for those of us who live and dop in Jozi and want to know more about our lager of choice. Now there is even more to add to this sensory journey. And this one is not just for the beer guzzling guys says Anton “Beer is the great leveller and is strongly growing unisex appeal. In a 50/50 audience I deliberately engage with women as they hold sway even up to 75/25 ratios. Women tend to listen, experiment more, give speakers a chance and have open minds around beer. They increasingly dictate beer purchasing as beer is more available at supermarkets. They are also a large proportion of our craft audience. Some of the funky flavours and styles of the popular American Pale Ales are citrus based and appeal to women directly”
The SAB World of Beer was opened on 15 May 1995 by former president Nelson Mandela and since then has been a magnet for It’s clear he knows his stuff. hard-pressed to find anyone more passionate about the golden brew than Anton, SAB’s Trade Brewer for the Egoli region. Anton was one of SAB’s first Trade Brewers and was instrumental in defining what the role really involved. According to him, the job is about ‘growing a beer culture by finding all the elements that allow us to present beer in all its golden splendour’. Beer and food pairings, brewery tours and beer tastings are all means to this end. When he’s not talking about beer, Anton can be found honing his angling skills or road tripping with his 4x4, family in tow. But unsurprisingly his ultimate holiday would involve a trip to Munich to sample the awardwinning Kloster Andechser Doppelbock. of the month
Yummy yummy little star
Chef Kevin Grobler of Restaurant JAN in Nice It isn’t easy to get time in Chef Kevin Grobler’s diary. When your restaurant wins a Michelin Star, the reservations book fills up even faster than before (and that was already a month’s waiting list). as fresh produce, whole pieces of meat, filleting fish and using those amazing ingredients to come up with new dishes and experimenting with new techniques,” he tells us.
Kevin Grobler is the head chef at Restaurant Jan in Nice, France, which is owned by the South African executive chef, Jan Hendrik. Just so we’re all on the same menu; here’s the 411 on the Michelin Star. Winning a Michelin Star is akin to winning an Oscar or a Grammy Award for an actor or a musician. Only, it may be even harder to attain.
Kevin also spent time as restaurant manager at Sante Wellness Hotel and Spa in Franschhoek to improve his knowledge of front-of-house skills. Kevin spent numerous of years at Delaire Graff and Equus restaurant in Stellenbosch, where he worked his way to sous-chef.
Being consistently funny or dramatic for the duration of a 90-minute feature film or a 3-minute song is a challenge, but serving lunch and dinner, day in and day out for years, to demanding customers who have come to expect a certain quality and experience every time – well, that’s just daunting if you ask us. So, it really is one of the most prestigious awards to receive in the culinary world as it takes food and service to a whole new level. Like we said, Chef Kevin’s been busy. But we managed to pin him down for a quick tete-a-tete. Being the head chef at a Michelin Star winning restaurant is something Kevin has been working towards for the past 10 years - so, of course, this has been a most rewarding experience. Chef Kevin started his career at Terroir restaurant in South Africa after which he moved to the Protea Hotel group. His love for nature and growing his own produce was nurtured working at Lions Valley Lodge, followed by a time at Amandier in South Korea where he spent time in the pastry kitchen.

“There’s not a lot of things that get me as excited Hello Joburg • April 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
So of all things why cooking we ask? Chef Kevin has always had an interest in food but says it was meeting the right mentors that really fuelled the oven of passion. “I had fantastic local mentors who taught me that it is the small things that make a big difference, and also how to work hard under pressure while maintaining high standards. Everywhere you go it will always be about consistency as consistency is key in any restaurant.” And what’s on the menu at Restaurant JAN? “We don’t really have a signature dish as we are constantly trying to evolve and grow but we do try to draw inspiration from South African flavours such as bobotie, biltong, milktart and mosbolletjies. Kevin's keen to share with us new food trends that are yet to hit SA. “Europe is very focused on using produce in its natural form, without necessarily cooking or transforming it into something else. They only use seasonal produce from the local region where a lot of South Africa tends to import and use produce out of season all year round. They are also transforming
traditional recipes and reconstructing them into modern dishes” He may be a chef in a prestigious restaurant abroad, but his love for the local food scene remains unchanged. “The SA food scene doesn’t have to stand back to any European kitchen or cooking. Our quality of food, produce, chefs and flavours are of the highest standards.” As for his local foodie recommendations when in town - those would include Mosaic at the Orient in Pretoria by chef Chantal Dartnall, as well as The Saxon and DW eleven-13 in Joburg. So what’s next? Chef Kevin’s immediate goal is to hang on to their new shiny star of course. As he explains, trying to maintain the star is as difficult as getting it, if not more so to keep it. As for his longterm plans “… well, you never know what the future may hold.” We will certainly be watching him. H 5 www.restaurantjan.com f Restaurant Jan Best advice (about food or life) given to Chef Kevin (take notes guys)... • Cooking – perfection is the small things done well - Marco Pierre White • Salt enhances flavour, pepper changes flavour Marco Pierre White • When in doubt strain again - Thomas Keller • Less chit chat more chop-chop - Thomas Kelle

KOI Where: Sandton and Rosebank Price: $$$ Description: Either it’s their reputation, or their slogan “Come, love, fish” that continues to entice hundreds of people into visiting this great restaurant - we think it’s a bit of both. It can’t be denied that they are renowned for being quite pricey, however they are just as renowned for being well worth the cost. So what can we expect of the menu: delicious dim sum, such as Prawn Puffs and Spinach and Cream Cheese. Salads, stir fries and sushi galore. And even if you don’t feel like fish they even have meat-based dishes such as Lamb Shank and Peking Duck on the menu. If you are ever craving Koi in Cape Town, there is one in Bantry Bay. amazing foodie race at Rosebank Mall ‘One cannot think well, love well, or sleep well if one has not dined well’ – Unknown
N
othing brings Joburgers together like good food. So it seemed fitting that our very first #HelloRecommends outing for 2016 went off with a bang, thanks to Rosebank Mall.
After competing, all the contestants indulged in a lovely luncheon at Woolworths Café and were tremendously spoiled with gourmet cupcakes,
tea infusers, hampers of biltong, vouchers from Sorbet, decadent chocolate-covered strawberries from Edible Bouquets and theatre tickets from the Barnyard Theatre. So what are you waiting for? Make a note in your diary to look out for our next fantastic #HelloRecommends experience - they will be a monthly treat where we host our beloved culinary connoisseurs. Cheers to many more Hello Recommends evenings! H

Words Bianca Spinner Images Jessica Notelo
We wanted to showcase the gastronomical extravaganza available at the mall and what better way to do just that than with a fast paced team event - an amazing race. Inspired by the gorgeous gourmet cuisine at Rosebank Mall’s eight food destinations, we invited twelve of our favourite foodies and influencers, and created four teams of three, who all had their game faces on, of course! #InItToWinIt
They sprinted through the eight foodie restaurants and cafes in the mall, Woolworths Café, Boost Juice, Cupcake Concept Kiosk, Europa, Exclusive Books Café, Joubert & Monty Famous Biltong, Mugg & Bean and Peacock Tea & Coffee, collecting clues at each pit stop. Each clue led the teams to different locations within the mall and each clue contained cryptic riddles, which needed to be solved. More importantly the guests indulged in all the mall’s glory and celebrated the food, counting the memories not the calories. What better way to steal their hearts than through their tummies?

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A DAY AT THE RACES For both established horseracing fans as well as those new to the sport, a day at the races can undoubtedly be a fun, social and exhilarating day out. To add to this experience, certain racecourses around South Africa are now offering interested racegoers the unique opportunity to tour the racecourse and get a first-hand behind the scenes look at all the different elements that make horseracing the thrilling sport that it is. Racecourse tours are offered at most race meetings in the Western Cape and Gauteng and on selected race days in Port Elizabeth. At Kenilworth and Durbanville Racecourses in the Western Cape as well as Turffontein in Johannesburg, a tour will begin at the information kiosk just before the running of race 3 on each specific race day (timing will depend on scheduled race times on each particular day). Patrons need to please pre-book for tours before the running of Race 2. Racecourse tours, which are hosted by professionals within the industry, will enable patrons to go to the parade ring, commentator’s box, visit the all-important stipes boardroom, weighing room and perhaps most enthralling is the visit to the starting stalls to watch the adrenalinefueled start of a horserace. Fairview Racecourse in Port Elizabeth offers race day tours on selected days when they have group bookings. Interested parties can call the racecourse to arrange this. Tours of Fairview can also include tours of the stables with permission from the relevant trainers. Few people appreciate all that goes into staging a successful horserace, a feat even more impressive when one realises that horseracing in South Africa takes place every single day of the year except on Christmas Day. The parade ring for example is a multipurpose area where the horses are taken for their pre-race parade. Horses are walked anti-clockwise to allow race
goers to assess the horse’s condition. This is usually done between eight and ten minutes before a race. There are also a number of race meeting officials at the edge of the parade ring at each race, and each official is looking at specific things. The commentator, for example, will be looking at and memorising the jockey silks so he can identify the horses as they cross the finish line. It is the judge who declares the official result of a race. The stipendiary stewards will be looking to see that the horse has the correct equipment such as horse shoes, tongue ties and blinkers and that the correct jockey is getting onto the correct horse. Racecourse tour leaders will impart valuable pointers and tips to interested patrons, such as the history of the racecourse, what attributes to look for to spot a winning horse in the parade ring, what happens in the weighing room as well as how the stipendiary stewards ensure that there is fair play in every race. Patrons who participate in a racecourse tour will never look at horseracing in the same way again! It is a sport of adrenaline, beauty and so much more. Racecourse tours are offered to interested members of the public free of charge. Unfortunately tours are not open to children under the age of 12. For more information about upcoming horseracing events, go to: www.itsarush.co.za. Art is not what you see but what you make others see
Laurel Holmes
How long have you been involved in the creation of art? Ever since I was a child but I’ve only taken the steps to make art my career since 2012.
- Degas
Pablo Picasso once said “Art washes away from the soul the dust of the everyday life.” It is inventive, imaginative and allows us to escape, to dream. It is rather inspiring that these three local artists are able to use their imagination to create something magical.
Claire Lichtenstein How long have you been involved in the creation of art? I started painting officially in 2011, but have been inspired by art and the creation of artwork from a very early age. Describe your work in three words. Raw, Luscious and Evocative. What is your view on local artists? And who is your favourite? There is a tremendous amount of diversity within the arts in South Africa, at the moment I’m loving Gail Behrmann’s paintings.

Jean Ann Rodrigues How long
have you been involved in the creation of art? I began my artistic journey in high school, and it has taken me about six years to really create and develop my own style. Describe your work in three words. Abstract. Authentic. Vulnerable.
What are the most challenging aspects of being an artist? The most challenging part is making the work itself, but the struggle is worth the reward.
What is your view on local artists? And who is your favourite? I believe we have a large amount of local talent that is impressionable and creative. One of my favourite artists is Diane Victor, especially her smoke drawings and her communication on paper is thought provoking.
Blogging and social networking are great ways to connect with your creative community. True or False? True.
What are the most challenging aspects of being an artist? Firstly creating stimulating material that serves the artist and client base. It is vital that the artist keeps challenging himself or herself as to avoid producing art just for the sake of it and secondly artists need to find a balance between the internal and external world as to avoid solo artwork. Blogging and social networking are great ways to connect with your creative community. True or False? Absolutely yes, although I would prefer writing letters with ink on paper, technology is the age and as artists it is important to explore their surroundings and build a support system within the art realm.
Hello Joburg • April 2016
What is your view on local artists? And who is your favourite? Local is up there with the best in the world. I don’t think I can pick a single artists, however right now top of mind is Strijdom van der Merwe (his land art is enchanting) and Karin Daymond (her lithographs are intriguing). What are the most challenging aspects of being an artist? Sticking to that personal artistic calling and avoiding being pulled into a purely commercial route (because of the important need to make money) which results in one being emotionally dragged in different directions and so losing momentum in selfexploration and development of a personal style. Blogging and social networking are great ways to connect with your creative community. True or False? Both I think but more critical is to put your head down and work in isolation. H

Alone: The Search For Brett Archibald In April 2013, a global breaking-news story surfaced on social media and in the world press, and rapidly gathered momentum. A South African man had fallen overboard in the night during a storm in remote Indonesian waters, without anyone else on board realising. Alone: The Search For Brett Archibald is the incredible but true story of what it takes to defy needle-in-a-haystack odds and survive what should have been certain death. Outdoor savvy, astonishing imagination, mental toughness, a refusal to give up hope and a canny rescuer with an unbelievable background ultimately saw him through. Most of all, this is a story of the power of the human spirit that defies rational explanation.

The south african flag
T
he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

F
rom a tender age, Chanelle loved to be on the stage - whether it was singing, dancing, acting or public speaking, the stage was her home. Having won many local and international competitions it was a natural progression for her to study acting after school. Having attended WITS for four years, Chanelle obtained her Honours degree in a BA in Dramatic Arts which led to her quickly gaining momentum in the international acting scene. Chanelle will soon be hitting our TV screens in the much-anticipated TV series Jongo. Hello Joburg team sat down with Chanelle to find out how she juggles such a hectic schedule and what we can expect from her in 2016. You love Joburg because… It’s vibrant and the business hub of South Africa. Joburg is thriving and as a businesswoman I am so inspired to influence and witness its growth.
What fuels your fire to act, sing and dance? It’s a calling. It’s like there is a light in my heart that shines every time I act, sing and dance. I can’t explain it, but boy does it make me happy! What would you say your moment of triumph was? Being a perfectionist, I don’t weigh up any achievement higher than the other because with every triumph comes a new sense of motivation which propels me to do better and work harder. If you had to choose three people to have dinner with dead or alive, who would they be? Jennifer Lopez (because I adore everything that she does and emulates) Mother Teresa (she is my single most inspiration) Pope St Francis (being a Catholic, I have so much to question and confide in him about). Selfies - obsessed or not so much? I hate to admit this but I am completely obsessed! The lighting is just so much better in selfies.
3 things you didn t know about Chanelle ’
1 She performed the lead roles in musicals such as Annie, Grease and Little Shop of Horrors. 2 Chanelle entered Miss South Africa at the age of 23 where she went on to become a finalist. 3 Chenelle’s favourite food is anything Asian, in particular sushi. Having travelled to Thailand, she developed a new-found appreciation for Asian culture, food and its people.
