ello Joburg was lucky enough to secure the new Miss South Africa’s first magazine cover shoot and interview. We chatted to Ziphozakhe Zokufa at the luxurious Maslow Hotel, while a typical Joburg thunderstorm pelted down outside. Barely two months ago Ziphozakhe was asked to step up and don the Miss SA crown as Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World. We wish her good luck representing South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant in Miami.

In the luxurious setting of the Maslow Hotel, Hello Joburg chatted to Miss SA, Ziphozakhe Zokufa about her love of film, travel and this special city: Jozi.

itting in the foyer of the Maslow Hotel on the eve of her trip to Miami to represent South Africa at the 63rd annual Miss Universe pageant, the 22 year old television production student and working model concedes that life’s opportunities present themselves whether you are ready or not. Barely two months ago, while on a modelling job abroad, Miss SA’s first princess was called to step up and don the Miss SA crown as Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World. While the disadvantage of lack of preparation for the Miss Universe pageant might have been a tangible concern to any contestant, South Africa could not have asked for a more composed candidate. “I believe in grabbing opportunities that come your way. I never want to be that person that thinks I should have or could have, which is why I entered Miss SA in the first place. When I got the call about Miami I literally had to pack up my life overnight and move to Johannesburg to prepare. It is such a humbling experience to take over from Rolene, and scary too. But with the hindsight of lessons learned traveling and working so hard over the past year, this chance has come at the perfect time for me.” Zipho has been overwhelmed by the support of the public and the media. “South Africans are fiercely loyal and supportive. They come together despite the odds when you need it most. I want to do well in the pageant for them.” FUN FACTS • Ziphozakhe used to be a professional singer who travelled abroad representing her province and country.” She also has a collection of instruments that include a piano, clarinet and guitar. • Zipho was born and raised in the Eastern Cape. • Other titles to her name include: Teen Miss Port Elizabeth 2009; Miss Eastern Cape Teen 2009; Miss Nelson Mandela Bay 2009; New Face International winner 2009; Miss Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University 2011 and Miss Mamelodi Sundowns Eastern Cape 2012.

As we chat in suite 291 while Zipho is preparing for the photo-shoot, the make-up artist scolds her repeatedly to stop smiling while she applies the beauty queen’s make-up. “I used to fidget like a child when having my hair or make-up done but you certainly learn the art of patience when sitting in this chair.” Her effusive energy and natural charm creates a light energy in the room despite the heavy summer rains pelting down outside. “I actually love this weather. It’s the best to just relax and read a book.” But do not be fooled by her laid back spirit. After studying political science at NMMU, Zipho enrolled to study at AFDA. Her career plan is clearly mapped out. “A lot of people think it is weird that I want to go into television writing and production because it is behind the scenes. I am focused on the long run.” Having said that, Zipho says that her experience in front of the camera during the Road to Miss SA in 2014 and the build up to Miss Universe has offered the most valuable insight into what influences and shapes the production process. We probed Zipho for some insight into the tight schedule and beauty queen dynamics that would greet her some 12 000km away. She cut straight to the chase. “I am going to meet another 87 strong, deserving and beautiful women who all want to take home the Miss Universe title for their countries. The competition will be fierce. But that doesn’t dampen the excitement I have to meet so many different people from all corners of the world. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” With welcome events and cocktail functions planned to rehearsals, a hospital visit and multiple personality interviews, the road to Miss Universe leaves little time for anything else. With the Jozi thunderstorm as the soundtrack to the afternoon, Zipho talks excitedly about her time in Joburg. “Being from a small town like the Eastern Cape and then having lived in Cape Town where people are quite laid back, you can’t help but love the pace and opportunity that Joburg offers. There is something here for everyone – from career to leisure and I love that about this place.” And her personal time out? Nothing compares to

quality time with her family and friends. With the universe open for her to take literally, Zipho’s childhood dream of simply being memorable is well on its way to fruition. I recommend the Mixed Berry Summer Sangria with fresh strawberries, orange, apple and cucumber. It has to be my all time beloved ‘local’, neighborhood bakery café. When you are still hustling to get a table at a restaurant that opened in May, then it’s clear that someone has a winning recipe. This month we feature Aimee Gerber, Chef at Perron – the hot new Mexican spot in Illovo that has tongues wagging and patrons queuing.

M

eet Chef Aimee. Nothing excites her quite like being part of creating a new experience from bottom up. Having been a part of the team that opened the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch as well as the three branches of Rocket, (two in Parkhurst and of course the flagship store in Rivonia) – her track record positions her as the ideal chef for a new kitchen adventure. She also has front row to the menu at Perron that has the customers mesmerized and booking their tables weeks in advance. A quick glance at the menu will have you salivating in no time - from the burritos to the chilli con carne and the sizzling steak, good luck deciding on what to go for. Of course if all else fails, ask the Chef (now that you know her by name, of course) – and for a real kick try the spicy chili margarita.

Aimee says the menu could be described as fresh with bold flavours. “We’ve tried to keep quite a lot of our dishes as traditional as possible but also adding our own little bit of flair too.” And clearly it’s working. Aimee gives us the lowdown. “The public response to our menu has been something of a dream come true. Ever since opening up we have been fully booked for dinners every night of the week.” Believe it when we tell you (we’re not chefs but we talk to Jozi’s best all the time

ob Heyns from League of Beers has been expanding our craft beer knowledge. We’ve covered basic identification of craft beers to pouring techniques and beer aficionado lingo. This month, he shares 10 craft beer facts you may have never heard before. I have always loved beer, particularly craft beer. And because it is something I am passionate about, I love to talk about it. I can literally talk about it until the fat lady sings about the cows coming home. So I’ve compiled a cheat sheet for you when discussing this topic at your next cocktail party. Silicon is supposed to be good for your bones. Beers that have high levels of barley and hops, also have high levels of silicon which means craft beer creates strong bones. At the moment, Red Sky is the only brewery I know of in SA that makes glutenfree beer. A malt is not necessarily a gluten-based product as any grain can be ‘malted.’ This means you can use rice, sorghum or maize. Frosty glasses will cause your beer to foam.

If you are into different craft beer brands, make sure you buy a ticket to Belgium. They have the most unique, beer brands to be found in one country – over 400. They passed a law that brewers were to drown in their beer if it was deemed as ‘unfit’. Talk about incentive and quality control. Archeologists found a beer recipe in the temple of Nefertiti. They decided to make the beer and called it the Tutankhamen. It retails at R550 a bottle which makes it the most expensive beer in the world. T

he Ford Kuga is now available with a significant range of upgrades that include the smart utility vehicle’s most powerful diesel powertrain to date. Improvements to the Kuga’s diesel and petrol engine range also deliver lower CO2 emissions. Kuga will have more advanced technologies as standard to help reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions, including Auto-Start-Stop and Active Grille Shutter. “We’ve updated the Kuga range with new engines that deliver more power but also lower emissions – two things you don’t see very often,” said Tracey Delate, Marketing Manager, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. “It’s part of our strategy to offer eco-friendly vehicles that don’t compromise on driving enjoyment or excellent consumer technologies.” Ford has increased peak power of the TDCi engine by 12kW to 132kW and peak torque to 400Nm, up from 340Nm. This engine choice will deliver the most pulling power ever for Kuga, particularly when combined with Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. The Kuga facelift also introduces the most powerful petrol engine in the mid-SUV segment - the 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine - which also powers the Focus ST, and delivers 177kW with 340Nm of torque. Another new powertrain for Kuga is the 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, reducing CO2 emissions to 143g/km from 154g/km – an improvement of more than seven per cent over the outgoing 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine. The engine also offers 134kW with 240Nm of torque. In South Africa, Kuga has seen consistent demand since launch with EcoBoost engines proving popular among buyers. The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za
