Hello

ONLINE

The year may be drawing to a close, but it’s not over yet! We’ve got lots of cool content and OTT competitions for you to look forward to online before we say bye-bye to 2018.

WHAT’S YOUR BRUNCH PERSONALITY? Joburgers don’t mess around when it comes to brunch – and neither do we! Whether you’re into wait-worthy waffles, delicious hangover-busters or are just looking for an excuse to get wasted before noon, we’ve found a brunch spot in Jozi just for you.

www.hellojoburg.co.za

CO-WORKING SPACES IN JOZI Sure, it seems fun to work at local coffee shops, but there’s only so much unreliable Wi-Fi and noisy side conversations (not to mention having to pack and unpack your things every time you go to the bathroom!) you can take before you start missing an office. We’ve found the most unique and innovative co-working spaces in Joburg for freelancers, entrepreneurs and industrious Joburgers who simply like to get things done.

WIN WIN WIN! You know we love to wow our readers with the most exciting competitions, and this month is no exception! We’ve got lots to give away, from a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 whiskey and a Sally Williams gourmet nougat hamper, to a fiesta in a box and Old El Paso products to the value of R2000!

What’s your favourite song at the moment and why? This is such a tough question. It changes constantly. At the moment, I have Stars by Dallerium on repeat because the happiness behind the beat makes me smile and want to dance and next would be Northern Soul by Above and Beyond, because the first time I heard it was live at Tomorrowland in July this year and I just really understood and felt the lyrics. What inspired you most to make music? People's reactions, the smiles, the happiness, nothing beats the feeling you get as a DJ when you play a song and the crowd goes mad or when the beat drops and the entire crowd moves as one or throws their hands in the air.  What can your fans expect from you in the future? There is only one direction I’m aiming for and that’s up. I’m aiming for a couple international events next year and a few major line-ups on local stages. Flourishing Fourways The Future of Business & Shopping in Johannesburg

Fourways is the fastest growing residential and business hub in Northern Johannesburg. It received its name from the four-way stop where William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road meet – still one of the busiest intersections in the suburb – and is set to become busier as Fourways continues to develop and refurbish, residentially and commercially, through increased investment.

H

aving always been a popular suburb choice for families due to its close proximity to shopping centres, schools, major motorways and transport routes, its popularity and the cost of housing is set to skyrocket with the development of the mega mall which is currently in progress. The plan is to link the newly refurbished Fourways Mall with surrounding malls to create a super-retail space and in doing so reposition the suburb as the new CBD. With an abundance of malls, offices, dining, entertainment and leisure options within the suburb, residents of Fourways are able to live, work and play within close proximity. There is the added bonus of the Gautrain bus stop at Montecasino and talk of Fourways becoming one of the next Gautrain stops, meaning commuting has been simplified. Originally a game farm, the area of Fourways has been extensively developed but still has pockets of agricultural land which have been capitalised on for farmers markets and outdoor events, making it one of the most diverse areas of Johannesburg.

POMODORO Ristorante Traditional Italian food made with love

P

omodoro Ristorante embodies just that. Husband and wife owners Stefano and Marina Mas opened Pomodoro in its original location 12 years ago and have since amassed a loyal following of food lovers that return time and time again. Their love for cooking authentic Italian meals – with an occasional modern twist and unique influence – as well as their motto of excellence and meticulous attention to detail sets them well apart from your usual Italian fare. This beautifully designed, contemporary yet classic Italian ristorante now situated in Morningside Mall is an upmarket dining experience without pretentious frills or bells and whistles that caters to a discerning customer looking to experience indulgent, rustic, homestyle cooking. The menu is influenced by recipes passed down from Stephano’s grandmother, mother and extended family and all hold a sense and taste of authentic and traditional Italian cuisine that’s truly made from the heart. With a focus on top-quality ingredients, simplistic cooking methods and a life-long passion for food,

20

Stefano and his team ensure that every plate that leaves the kitchen is served with flavour, richness and the signature Pomodoro touch. The menu offers all the traditional classics from Neopolitan style pizza’s, delicious homemade linguine pasta with pesto, tagliatelle with beef and veal ragu, homemade ravioli filled with prawn and basil mousse, gnocchi with gorgonzola, lasagna and risotto. The menu is not overly complicated or overthought but rather simply designed and executed with meals that are wholesome and of generous portion size. But, let’s start right at the beginning with the mouth-watering selection of antipasti (starters) that are on offer. From a light Caprese salad with fresh creamy buffalo mozzarella to parmesan baked brinjals, salmon carpaccio, pan-fried prawns and our personal favourite antipasto misto – a variety of cold meats and cheese served with toasted ciabatta bread and imported marinated vegetables – to lip-smacking salads (yes, you heard right) there is simply nothing left desired. We opted to start our meal off with Stefano’s recommendation; a classic margarita

The menu is also host to top-notch meat and seafood dishes, if you’re not particularly in the mood for pizza or pasta and has something for the most discerning of palates. Try the line fish fillet in foil with olives, capers and tomatoes, the lightly crumbed and grilled Falklands calamari tubes, or the grilled prawns or, for something a little heartier, the veal minute steak with a creamy mushroom and truffle sauce, the Florentine style 700 grams super matured T-bone steak with olive oil and rosemary or the black pepper and mascarpone cheese stuffed chicken breast with a creamy mushroom and truffle sauce serve as the ultimate treat! Don’t forget to pair your meal with a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. There’re over 170 bottles to chose from. Dessert was an oh-so-decadent 70% Belgium dark chocolate mousse with berries. It ticked every single box with its smooth creamy texture, rich, dark flavour and tart raspberry accompaniment. Yum! We most certainly left Pomodoro Ristorante feeling like we had just travelled to Italy and we are sure you will too! Italian cuisine is said to come from the hearts and minds of Italian families being passed down from generation to generation. It is a language, it is a celebration and it is simplicity in everything from the ingredients to the final plating.

pizza with buffalo mozzarella and it was absolutely unforgettable; a thin, crispy base, sweet tomato sauce, creamy fresh cheese and fragrant basil. It was the perfect start to our meal. Next, as per Stefano’s recommendation was pasta, specifically a homemade egg tagliatelle dish with the most indulgently rich porcini mushroom, saffron and whisky sauce and a dish that caught our eye from the very start, penne with prawn meat, fresh diced tomato, onion and tequila – if just the thought of that combo doesn’t make you drool, we don’t know what will.

Saint

WOK N ROLL They opened doors last month at THE MARC Sandton and yip, you guessed it, we were there as soon as they did. It’s the same concept as the Pretoria branch only bigger and in our opinion better. The restaurant seats 224 and is double the size of the Pretoria branch with a few unique menu items added too. The restaurant has settled into a killer dance, where everything moves likes clockwork. Both the sushi chef and the head chef come all the way

from China and are exceptionally experienced and practised in their craft. But the reason we love this restaurant most of all is because every single ingredient is fresh, yip you heard it here, even the salmon, which is delivered fresh three times per week. Nothing is kept frozen; it is all wholesome and nutritious. Savouring each and every spoonful is mandatory, especially when it comes to their Gai Daan Zai dish which is a bubble wrap waffle, filled with matcha ice cream, sweet-smelling fruits and a gooey chocolate sauce. If this sounds too decadent, then their Japanese matcha green tea ice cream is a delicious alternative. But, before dessert, let’s rewind to mains. We recommend ordering their sushi, dim sum, ramen bowls and makeyour-own wokked noodle bowls. Our highlights: the one-of-a-kind langoustine roll that is so fresh it melts in your mouth with a delightful texture and flavour. Or, be a little more daring and try their eel tempura roll with kimchi sauce! Trust us it’s a bouquet of happiness. n the last few years the Joburg gastronomy panorama has escalated to new heights and this is nowhere truer than at David Higgs’s newest addition, Saint. Masterminds Higgs and Gary Kyriacou, originally inspired by a Manhattan restaurant, have taken to their dough as a sculptor to his artwork. It is quite simple, this two hundred and thirty-seater eatery is another superb addition to the Sandton skyline. We are utterly obsessed not only with the new mad and twisted Italian style concept, but also the fact that you feel like you’re the only one in the room due to the impeccable service. Feed your greed with their Neapolitan style pizzas starting at R125. The pizzas are cooked in beautiful glistening golden ovens, imported all the way from Naples and each crusty cheesy pie takes just sixty seconds to create. The never-ending dough-tossing

exhibition alone is worth a visit. They make their own pizza dough; their own perfectly ripened tomato sauce and the cheese is local of course. We recommend chowing down on the OG, a Margherita with fresh mozzarella, a firm favourite. Also, try the fillet of beef from the fire, R265, finely displayed and raised on top of a decadent bean stew and served with herb salsa and a dollop of butter. If you’re a veggie they haven’t neglected you, the wood-fired beets dish (R165) with mustard greens, lip-smacking ricotta and a beetroot pesto is prepared exquisitely and seasoned perfectly. The cherry on top of this lustful exploration is their sweet confessions; traditional affogato, a delicious tiramisu with mascarpone gelato or an orange and Campari cake. Whether you’re a saint or a sinner, all guests are welcome. THE MARC, Corner Rivonia and Maude Street, Sandton m 010 594 5888 Q @saint_jhb

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… MOMO KURO

I’m going to be honest here: it wasn’t too long ago that when you mentioned the words ‘Asian fusion’ in Joburg, it would trigger a visceral reaction, evoking images of over-sauced hybrid sushi and sad avocado egg rolls (#sorrynotsorry!). But since the opening of the Momo group’s first restaurant, Momo Baohaus in Greenside, little over two years ago, fusing the elements of Eastern cuisine with classic American, French or Italian techniques has become par for the course. From in-your-face mash-ups to subtly infused plates, culture-crossing chefly innovation is at an all-time high! Shortly after the opening of Momo Baohaus, the group opened Momo Soko in Illovo and Momo &O in Norwood. Recently, they opened another restaurant in a location that completely took us by surprise considering the other restaurants’ low-key placements – Momo Kuro in the oh-so-trendy Keyes Art Miles in Rosebank. We popped in to see how it compares to its sister restaurants. The first thing you should know about Momo Kuro is that it’s hidden – very hidden. There’s no visible signage from the road and you’ll have to ask a security guard to direct you there (be prepared to climb a few staircases – high heels aren’t recommended). But, in my opinion, this all adds to its charm. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted by tasteful décor and Insta-worthy views across Jozi. While it’s not as tiny as the other restaurants, Momo Kuro is a small yet intimate space and is bound to get noisy when it’s full. However, this wasn’t the case when I visited on a Saturday afternoon when it was relatively quiet. On the menu, you’ll find all the well-loved Momo favourites, from modern Asianinspired tapas to super-stuffed baos and fresh-as-you’ll-find poké bowls. To start, my friend who joined me for lunch and I ordered the crispy calamari and prawn spring rolls with some fresh coconut water (the restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license so it’s not the place for a boozy lunch, but you can take your own wine for free – score!). As simple as these dishes were, they definitely weren’t of substandard quality and I felt like I was getting my money’s worth! For mains, I ordered the Deep-Sea Bao filled with tempura prawn, hoisin, pickled ginger, mayo, sriracha, spring onion, coriander and toasted sesame. My friend opted for the Mauai poké bowl with field greens, Norwegian salmon and a ginger scallion drizzle. The baos were much bigger than I was expecting and could’ve been a full meal on their own. They were out-of-this-world indulgent and filled to the brim with the most delectable tempura prawns – hmm, hmm! The poké bowl, which I was lucky enough to have a taste of as well, was the perfect fusion of two food-world buzzwords – poké and bowl. There was a generous amount of salmon and all the other ingredients used were super-fresh and of high quality. It tasted oh-so-Hawaiian! Unfortunately, neither of us had space left for dessert, but I’ll definitely be back to try the deep-fried bun with sweet milk dip very soon. If you’re looking for an on-trend yet unpretentious place to tuck into food that will leave your tummy and your wallet feeling satisfied, I’d totally recommend that you give Momo Kuro a try ... quick, before it becomes as outrageously popular as its sisters!

chef OF THE MONTH

There’s only one chef who’s considered the godfather of Italian gastronomy in Joburg, and that’s the Café Del Sol group’s executive chef, Jonathan Duiker.

T

Before moving into his current position, Jonathan worked his way up the ranks from chef de party to sous chef and then from head chef to executive chef. He now manages Café Del Sol’s trio of restaurants – Classico in Olivedale, Botanico in Bryanston and Tre in Parkhurst – he has about 60 kitchen staff working under him. Sounds like a tough job, right? We’re sure it is – which is why Jonathan says it’s so important to maintain a sense of humour. “I have a firm management style, but I allow chefs to let their personality shine through in everything they do.” Jonathan is happiest at work during service times when he gets to create innovative dishes and interact with guests – sometimes over a chilled glass of one of his favourite wines; The Bernard Series by Bellingham

Whole Bunch Roussanne 2015 or the Waterford The Library Collection Cabernet Franc 2015. He’s very involved in the menu development and overall design and is constantly dreaming up delicious dishes on the fly to add to the menu and weekly specials board as well as Café Del Sol’s catering and cooking school concepts. While the main food on offer at Café Del Sol is classic, homemade Italian food just as it’s made in mamma’s kitchen, Jonathan’s favourite cuisine to cook is Asian – especially South Asian and Southeast Asian. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to make the perfect porcini mushroom risotto or the most gorgeously smooth vanilla panna cotta! Commenting on Joburg’s food scene, he describes it as a “melting pot of different food concepts”. According to Jonathan, locals tend to stick to what they know, so all you need to do as a chef is stay consistent and your clients will remain loyal. When Jonathan isn’t cooking up a storm at Café

He’s also a regular at cocktail bars Sin+Tax and The Landmark and is part of a cigar club called Brothers of the Leaf & Sisters of the Leaf. On his off days, Jonathan enjoys kicking back with his wife who he describes as “the best friend anybody could ask for”, entertaining friends and family at home and searching for recipe books – both old and new. he reason Jonathan decided to dedicate his career to cooking is simple – not only has he always had a love of fine food and wine, but he also found the travelling opportunities that the culinary industry offers extremely appealing (and of course he’s taken full advantage of them). Jonathan has worked in world-class restaurants in luxury hotels all around the world, including the Cape Grace Hotel in Cape Town, The Royal Villas in Swaziland, Four Seasons Desroches Island in the Seychelles as well as W Hotels, Anantara and LUX* resorts in the Maldives. “Because my training has been predominantly in hotels, I have a very structured upbringing in the industry,” he says.

nderneath a constellation of 7000 drumsticks, alongside Eric Burdon’s guitar, restaurateur Tyrone Harding started out as a server at Italian inspired Fratelli restaurant 25 years ago. His love affair with the business began with mastering the art of making pizza, before earning his stripes on the floor. BETTER-FOR-YOU BOTTLES Did you know that some wines are healthier than others?

If you’re going to have a drink, choosing vino is generally one of your healthiest options, but not all bottles are made equal. While wine is naturally lower-cal than most drinks behind the bar, packed with phytochemicals that fight free radicals as well as linked to a healthier heart and a sharper noggin (as long as you don’t overindulge), some bottles are healthier than others. So, we’ve rounded up our top tips on how to choose the bottle that’s best for you.

Resveratrol is the main health-promoting antioxidant found in wine. While all wines contain some of it, red wine contains much more than white wine because it’s fermented right on the antioxidant-containing grape skin.

Brampton Cabernet Sauvignon Around R84 from any bottle store

Around R225 from any bottle store Despite its name, this wine is pure, focused, textured and penetrating on the palate. Bursting with raspberries, allspice, bitter dark chocolate and a grapefruit-cool-climate, you can expect notes of dark fruit and floral incense. But be careful – the refreshing acidity of this wine will lure you back for more and more ... and more!

Cabernet Sauvignons are made with grapes with super-thick skin, meaning they’re chockfull of resveratrol. This wine doesn’t have the reputation of ‘King Cab’ for no good reason! It has deep, refined flavours of red cherry, mulberry and blackcurrant backed up with ripe plum and cocoa on the nose and dark chocolate notes (yum!).

Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block 2016

 SEEK OUT ORGANIC WINES

Organic or sustainably farmed wines are made without the use of pesticides and usually contain fewer synthetic chemicals than non-organic ones. They also don’t contain any added sulphites so are great if you’re looking to cut back on chemicals.

Waverley Hills Semillon/Chardonnay 2009, The Witzenberg Mountain Range. Around R85 from waverleyhills.co.za This wine is 100% ORGANIC and ever so fruity! All the vineyards are irrigated with pure spring water and are located on a natural watershed area so it’s just plain goodness. They fertilize with composts and manures and no toxic chemicals are used! You’ll love the pineapple and nectarine aromas and silky undertones. It’s healthy, light, fresh and organic, minus the guilt too because its nutritious and delicious!

LOOK FOR A LOWER ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE The higher a wine’s alcohol percentage, the greater its sugar content – that’s because all the alcohol comes from the grapes’ sugar. Most wines are between 9% and 16% alcohol, so try, keep it below that.

Villiera Starlight Brut 9.5% - the light Cap Classique

Around R90 a bottle

R120 a bottle

So, it’s only half a percent lower than the average we know but hey, a definition is a definition right and we’re going with it. Who doesn’t love a pretty pink hue? Gorgeous is vivacious and versatile, like us #obvs. It has layers of raspberry cream, grapefruit, lime and honeydew-melon flavours which make for the ideal summer wine. Although given the deliciousness of this wine, it may negate the whole purpose of being low cal if you polish off two bottles, which is really easy. We like to pair this one with a fresh summer salad or seared tuna.

We like a brand that heads the call of its consumers and that’s exactly what family-run winery Villiera in Stellenbosch did with this one and we’re all starred eyed for it. Light and zesty, the Starlight Brut is a new innovation from Villiera. Renowned for their pioneering efforts, Villiera was one of the first to create the low alcohol Cap Classique without compromising taste or quality. When Cap Classique first hit the shelves, drinkers likened the experience to tasting the stars. Since then it has truly become the drink of the stars, from romantic dinners to parties beneath them.

Graham Beck Gorgeous Pinot Noir Chardonnay 11.25%:

Avondale Cyclus 2009, Paarl, Cape Town. R330 from www.avondalewine.co.za So healthy, we would lick the estate floors because they’re biodynamic and organic vineyards. BTW the 100 hectares of farm is certified organic too! What more could you ask for whilst lazing by the pool? This white blend of Viognier, Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon grapes has a rich nose of violets and peaches and goes down perfectly with a cheese platter and fresh strawberries. Where to go and what to eat for the perfect first date After careful deliberation and plenty of nom nomming we have come up with our top five first date picks. And, you know that if you survived the first date you might enter into the honeymoon phase. So, we’ve found a way to ensure the romance continues… you’re so welcome.

1

La Boqueria Parktown North for the lovey-dovey vibe This will be a date night with an electric ambience in a popular and stylish setting. Not only will you be dining in one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in town, but you’ll be chowing down on delicious dishes too. What to order: We recommend starting it off casual with their edamame beans splashed with rock salt, chilli, soya and lime, followed by a tapas-style dinner, because sharing equals romance. Then spoil yourselves with a bottle of Groot Constantia Sauvignon Banc 2017, trust us the result will be worth the R320.

What to order: Firstly, they serve Origin coffee so #winning. Secondly, your date will appreciate visiting a brand-new spot, so kudos to you and thirdly they have a fabulous brekkie menu. We’re talking spicy chickpeas with fresh avo on ciabatta toast, toasted bacon and cheese croissants and delectable Nutella, strawberries and cream flapjacks. Also, you’ll need the energy to boost your confidence so order a glass of their freshly squeezed juice of the day too. 14 Menton Rd, Richmond m 010 595 1070 E @RichmondStudioCafe

Pauls Ice Cream at The Marc Sandton for heaven on earth

3

How impressed will your date be when you take him or her to this latest addition to the Sandton skyline? The Marc building is where yuppies and elitists revel and sometimes we all need a little bit of snobbery in our lives. What to order: Honestly who doesn’t love ice cream? Get a scoop of the birthday cake and a scoop of the rustic carrot cake ice cream, made with freshly baked carrot cake pieces and a spiced caramel, swirled into a cream cheese base. Speechless. You might just get a smooch afterwards, we can’t guarantee it but it’s plausible. 129 Rivonia Rd, Sandown, Sandton m 076 319 6124 K www.paulshomemade.com

4

Casalinga Ristorante in Muldersdrift for a city escape We know this location will sweep your date off their feet. Dining out al fresco in the summer sunshine…does it get more fairy-tale like? P.S after lunch go for a walk around the impressive organic vegetable and fruit gardens. What to order: Expect a Lady in the Tramp moment because pasta is on the menu. We love the lasagne di verdure but perhaps skip the garlic, wink wink. Or try the mouthwatering homemade tagliatelle seafood pasta or go the safe route, minus the slurping, and try the gnocchi dumplings with pesto. You’ll watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand, peering ever so lovingly into each other’s eyes. Yip this is the ideal date spot for a drink, or three! Perhaps you’re not too sure of your date and eating seems long winded, so we recommend drinks instead. What to order: Epic Fornications. Sorry, not sorry, that’s the name of the cocktail. Or opt for the fanciful route and impress your date by ordering the Tennis-ee Williams cocktail; vodka served in a teacup, with passion fruit & litchi juice, lemon curd, verbena liquor, coriander - and a biscuit and if you happen to hear tummy grumbles order some of their bar snacks. 144 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood, Randburg m 011 268 6485 K www.streetbar.co.za

THE SNACKS LINETH THE TUMMY Our favourite spots for cool vibes, drinks and of course easy and delicious snacking We like a good party as much as anyone. But we like waking up the next day feeling semi-fresh too. They say prevention is better than cure! There are many ways to avoid that all fall down scenario, one being to line the tummy with food which slows down the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream. We also have some food suggestions for those eating before they go out #budget is a real thing! A great place for hard-earned after work phuza drinks, the Milk Bar’s African inspired décor and menu is particularly lekker if you are showing some international friends or clients around. The drinks are simple and well-priced from 2M, Black Label and Striped Horse Lager to gin or tequila. We really like the no fuss or frills Line that stomach: Try one of their flatbreads or some bar snacks like the triple cooked chips (yes please), lamb meatballs, chilli bites, wet biltong and bobotie nachos! 21 Keyes Ave, Rosebank, Johannesburg, 2196 m 010 594 5128

Hoggs Illovo

Curb the judgement, will you! We all know there’s a time and place for a sports bar vibe and because this one’s in Illovo, the floors aren’t as sticky, and the drinks have a little more finesse. You might just be surprised by all the suits packed into the place from 5 pm on any given Friday. From the craft beer to the variety of spirits, clearly, something is working. Milk Bar rosebank For those eating at home before a big night out, here are some of the best foods to have if you want to reduce the effects of alcohol. Salmon – it has essential vitamin B-12 levels and omegas which alcohol depletes. And it helps with memory loss – could be important after too many tequilas.

Quinoa –weird but it works as its high in

fibre and slows the stomach’s emptying time.

Eggs – also great the next day (with loads of butter) in case you didn’t wake up that fresh after all, eggs have essential amino acids that assist in breaking alcohol down.

Milk – it keeps you hydrated and is also high in potassium which your body tends to lose when you’re drinking.

OF THE MONTH Malfy Gin Rosa

Hot on the heels of Malfy Con Arancia, the latest offering from the Torino Distillati is just in time for summer: Malfy Gin Rosa.

PINK GIN FIZZ

Ingredients Malfy Gin Rossa Prosecco Grapefruit

About: As the name suggests, the gin is a delightful pink colour and, typical of the exceptional Italian quality we’ve come to expect from Malfy, no detail has been spared. Presented in a frosted bottle decorated with traditional Italian glass painting techniques, the liquid bears testament to the centuries of experience and heritage behind the Vergnano family and the traditional pot stills used to produce it. How it’s made: Juniper, grapefruit skins and rhubarb are infused in Italian grain spirit for 36 hours which results in Malfy Gin Rosa’s beautiful blush pink colour. This infusion is then blended with a second distillate of juniper, coriander, lemon peel, orange peel, Angelica root and Orris root for hours before finally being blended with pure, natural spring water from the Rocce Azzurre spring in the heart of the MonViso Mountain in the Cottian Alps.

Method:

Mix one-par t Malfy Gin Rossa with two par ts Prosecco. Serve in a champagne flute. Garnish with a (Sicilian) grapefruit twist. K www.malfygin.com Q @MalfyGinSA D @MalfyGinSA E @MalfyGinSA

❶ Flavours: Malfy Gin Rosa expertly combines classic Southern Italian citrus, Pompelmo Rosa (pink grapefruit) with Rabarbaro (rhubarb), which is grown widely and used in many classic Italian drinks such as Aperol. Try one: Malfy Gin Rosa balances the bittersweet grapefruit and rhubarb flavours, with subtle juniper to offer a mouth-wateringly complex finish. The Southern Italian citrus aromas and hints of juniper coupled with the pink blush colour of the liquid make Malfy Gin Rosa perfect for a wide variety of summer cocktails… always garnished with a slice of grapefruit and sipped among friends! THE WORLD

of DIGITAL ART

Meet Luca Boni

There’s an authenticity in the work of an artist who is as eccentric as their creations. Luca Boni is one such artist.

T

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied

he artist once told his parents he wanted to be a vet or would happily drive a yellow taxi. But it seemed that the arts had a different plan for him as he took up illustration. “It’s definitely something you’re born to do,” he told us. “It kind of chooses you,” says the guy who has dabbled with this craft for 26 years but really dedicated the last four years to making it work. Armed with oils, pencils and acrylics, Luca creates his masterpieces by hand or digitally using Photoshop and a Wacom. Luca explains. “I use photoshop with a Wacom tablet which is basically a virtual piece of paper. With regards to the process, I lay down basic shapes using a brush within photoshop like you would on a traditional painting, then I explore and refine the lights and shadows, colours etc. until I have the desired result.  ‘But is that really art’ your Marc Chagall obsessed grandmother pipes up from over your shoulder? Annoying to hear in 2018 we know. Thankfully most perceptions of digital art not being real art has

long passed us by and the work of digital artists like Bruce Branit (think Stat Trek visual everything) and Japanese digital artist, Kagaya Yutaka (check him out now if you haven’t) have all but smashed those types of granny platitudes. From appropriation art to monochrome pieces that pop with a single colour, technology is deeply ingrained in the discipline today. Modern critics will tell you that art is the ability to manipulate any medium to capture an audience – and if the result doesn’t inspire, well then you really have a problem. So, what inspires Luca? “That's a tough question, I try not to wait around for inspiration but when it does happen like recently, I saw a car guard with a reflective vest and thought "oh man, I just have to paint that". Luca is currently working on a project called Aldo which he describes as a free to play mobile game about love, heartache and a stupid horse. We’ll be telling you more when we know more but what’s not intriguing about heartache and a stupid horse right?

WHERE TWO OCEANS MEET:

DURBAN AND CAPETOWN The ultimate seaside dream Whether you’re obsessed with being a beach bum or witnessing a sunset fall over the horizon, these two major cities are addictive. We’ve seen and done it all, so we thought we would offer two travel options that are slightly more distinctive. And if like us, you’re all about edifying that summertime feeling and you’re demanding more ocean breezes, relaxation and piña coladas, then this is just for you. DURBAN Go to Zimbali Fairmont Resort- North Coast- for a well-deserved week of indulgence The Fairmont Zimbali Resort situated inside the exclusive Zimbali Coastal Estate is an imposing oasis and is just a short 30-minute drive from the airport. After your 45-minute flight lands, you’ll either be collected by their shuttle service or hire a car and drive. There really is nothing else like this immaculate resort style offering in South Africa. It’s a little slice of heaven in the heart of Durban. The first thing you’ll notice is the abundance of plants and overgrown vegetation, it’s a tropical retreat that offers complete privacy. The resort has a Bali style architectural feel with vervet monkeys swinging from above and the Indian Ocean in front of you; it’s truly a remarkable location. Discover the hotel’s offerings, which impress with 154 guest rooms and suites, including a penthouse and presidential suite, as well as 18 Fairmont Heritage Place villas, the Willow Stream Spa with eight treatment rooms, five restaurant offerings, a health club and two swimming pools. This is why we fell head over

heels for this resort; you could easily stay the week and never get bored. The rooms have magnificent ocean views and beds fit for kings and queens, there is even a turndown water bottle service and a large luxurious bathtub that you just might sit and soak in for hours with a glass of bubbles, listening to the sprays and breaks of the ocean. Its homely yet luxurious and motions just the right amount of comfort. The highlight of our weekend was the Ayoba Mexican restaurant and day pool. It’s a beach club, barefoot and cocktail- in-hand kind of ambience. There is a wood fired pizza oven for the most delicious Mexican flatbreads, cheesy traditional style nachos, chilli poppers, burritos and crunchy beach bar tacos. To wash it all down you’ll have to force yourself to have one of their Margaritas. Choose from the classic to the more inventive, like the cinnamon and pineapple margarita or the guava and chilli margarita - shaken or frozen they are deliciously delectable. For dinner, we also adored the live piano entertainment at The 31 Degrees Bar and recommend sipping on an African Queen cocktail just before dining at their fine dining Osa Indian restaurant. They serve authentic Indian food served by an authentic Indian chef who concocts dishes from Northern India with a traditional Tandoori oven. Ensure you spend at least one full lazy day on the private beach in front of the resort, exclusively for Zimbali hotel guests, it’s an untouched sliver of bliss, pristine, unspoiled sand dunes and an ocean view that will sweep you off your feet. It’s visually spectacular.

Go to The View Boutique Hotel – Amanzimtoti - for a secluded weekend break Nestled in Amanzimtoti Kwazulu Natal this five-star boutique style hotel ticks all the right boxes. You’ll see a different side to Durban because you’re far away from the city lights and close to the cheerful coast. What was once a town you simply passed through has now become a gem of a destination. You’ll fall in love with this little beach town and its laid-back surfers and deep blue waters. This pretty coastal town is quaint and charming and allows for the perfect weekend getaway. If you’re able to, try visiting in June or July, as there is a Sardine run, well worth a visit! The hotel is not your standard chain but rather offers surroundings that are tranquil and peaceful, and you won’t see anyone you know. It’s the kind of sabbatical where you can unwind with a book or three and have permission to be reclusive. Plus, the sunset over the hotel is utterly mesmerizing. The hotel offers exceptional comfort, especially having recently renovated the rooms, which are all uniquely designed and offer complete luxury. The rooms are spacious and comfy and with a balcony overlooking the ocean, you might never want to leave. They also have a fitness centre, swimming pool and exclusive spa on site, which offers a full menu of treatments from massages, to customized Dermalogica facials,

scrubs and body wraps, OPI manicures and pedicures, reflexology milk baths and tailormade packages too. This weekend escape is all about revitalizing and rejuvenating the body, mind and soul, so while you’re taking care of that don’t forget to satisfy your cravings too. They have an excellent restaurant, Giorgio’s, where you’ll enjoy breakfast sipping on Americanos whilst pecking on freshly baked croissants, blueberry muffins, banana toffee oats and a proudly South African traditional egg breakfast, whilst being hypnotized by the ocean view. Dinner is also served in Giorgio’s with a romantic and dreamy setting where you can choose from delightful culinary delights like a Dolce & Gabbana pizza with creamy gorgonzola and tangy caramelized onions, a garlic prawn and mussel pasta served in a creamy white wine sauce or the fresh fish of the day.

If you’re lusting for wellness we have just the location. Forget Stellenbosch and Franschhoek we have a new favourite. Last month we visited this exclusive charming little venue in the Helderberg Mountains and were awestruck by its raw beauty and everlasting winelands. If you’re looking for a lighter, brighter holiday experience then this ticks all the right boxes. We couldn’t think of anything better than escaping the Jozi hustle and bustle and unwinding in the Cape Winelands for the weekend. You’re definitely guaranteed to enhance your energy and sense of purpose.

the solid foundation of this lodge. Laid-back luxury is what we opted for, and so, we had a three-night detox and yoga retreat adventure. But don’t assume simplicity, you will have a butler on call all weekend long, it’s a retreat your way. There is a restaurant in the lodge as well as a hedonistic pamper haven awaiting you at their spa. We were served beautiful bountiful bowls for all meals. You can opt to create your own, whether it’s grilled line fish, butter beans, quinoa, roasted veggies, kale or homemade tahini dressing, name it they offer it. We also loved the Mexican bowl jam-packed with generous cheesy nachos and fresh guacamole. So, whether you prefer an all vegan or vegetarian detox or you would rather have a glass of wine at lunch, your wish is their command. But our suggestion is that you have to try their berry smoothie, which is served to the room with freshly picked lavender from the garden. P.S the restaurant will be changing this month into a Spanish tapas bar. The yoga retreat does not take place at the lodge but is just a short drive to Lourensford wine estate. The lodge offers a complimentary shuttle service to and from the wine farm. Snuggled inside the Lourensford wine estate are 37 dams, five rivers and the life retreat studio. From yoga retreats to corporate packages, reiki, astrology, Pilates, endocrinology, massages and meditation to oneof-a-kind experiences, they offer it all. Amongst the berry and fruit trees and a variety of indigenous plants you’ll experience wellness like never before. It’s the first of its kind and pure genius to create a yoga and wellness centre inside a wine estate. What you’ll quickly realise is what sets the studio apart are the specialised instructors. We recommend attending one of Ryan Gary Edmonds or Samantha Aronson’s classes. They are highly trained, intuitive and offer stellar expertise in their craft.

The Silver Forest Boutique Lodge & Spa Life Retreat Studio offers you the opportunity to tailor make your perfect Wellness (or Adventure). AT SEA

If you’re looking to plan an unforgettable meeting, incentive trip, conference or event, look beyond the usual land-based venues to the open sea! In the past, conferencing technology on cruise ships had a bad rap. Today, many cruise ships are extremely well equipped to handle groups for all kinds of MICE events. In fact, cruise companies have used new-builds as an opportunity to incorporate technology that gives land connectivity a serious run for its money.

How did you get into the entertainment Industry? I get this question a lot and I would argue that I started my acting career in 1989, when I played an Elf on stage for a school play it was all uphill from there. A behind the scenes fact about competing in Mr SA? The competition is real! The CEO has transformed the image of Mr. South Africa and initiated quite a few tough challenges which push the contestants to really work for the title. It is not just about being pretty or well built, which was my initial concern as a 35 year old.

verbal and physical bullying and it hurts me that I cannot do anything to stop it. I have witnessed grownups and senior citizens still suffering the effects of bullying from when they were a younger. We as a society do not realise enough how serious bullying is and what the consequences are.

Tell us about your efforts to raise funds for antibullying. The raising of funds has been a challenge itself and I find I get a lot of private messages from people who have been bullied admiring the fact that I agreed to put my body on the line with many other personalities, but no financial contribution. My motivation is to train hard for a fight to raise awareness and thereby creating more sponsorship to foundations like the JAG Foundation. Ticket sales are what inevitably go towards raising awareness. The cause is more important that the fight itself and I do feel that bullying in all formats and its consequences does not get enough attention.

If you could redesign the food pyramid without any dire health consequences, how would it look? This may be a naughty answer... Right on top of the food pyramid I would say desserts minimum three times a week. I think eggs are underrated (I keep 15 boiled eggs in my fridge weekly), and is a great crack and snack. As for cereals and breads, I prefer potatoes. And when it comes to vegetables and fruit it is always good to have them daily. I firmly believe that life is too short not enjoy the creations that may be presented to us at eateries and it all comes down to portion size. I have eaten around the world and I hop around to restaurants when I can with a good friend of mine. We share everything ordered which means taste buds are satisfied, experiences are enjoyed and waistlines are happy at the same time. (She posts using the hash tag #sameanderer on Instagram.)

Why do you relate to the antibullying cause? I was bullied a lot at school because of cultural differences, being overweight and being in a new school and environment during 1994. There is online bullying,
