foreword

What has been your highlight of 2019 thus far?

Hello Pretoria is published by Spinner Communications (Pty) Ltd. Established in 1980 Hellopretoria.co.za That’s so easy! The Spinnercom.com arrival of a special little man into our lives! Lord Jaxon.

Becoming a mom for the second time

Hello, Pretoria! It feels like today should be marked as one of the hottest days of 2019 and Majoor, our Great Dane is lazily stretched out next to me – barely moving. Outside the Jacarandas are now in full bloom and the heat is really not showing much grace to lawns or lavenders. We are all hard-up for rain and I can almost feel the tension in the air as I encounter Pretorians while embarking on my daily routine. The rainclouds build up and disappear, leaving us to look up to the skies in disbelief. But, it’ll come. Like all things in life, this is just another lesson to be learnt: Our time is not always the best time. Meanwhile, November has a lot of positive things to look forward to and in this issue with Pretoria-born Jo Black on the cover we share our insights with you on what to do, where to go, how to plan and when to buy. I met Jo Black roughly six years ago when he was working as a contractor on a farm in the Kalahari. As he sang songs beside the campfire, neither of us had any idea that he would soon be famous – South Africa’s own George Clooney, guitar in hand! Meeting up with him and chatting to him about his journey was inspirational to say the least. Read more about him and his various ventures on page 6. If your savings account has run dry (like our garden) and you’re homebound for the holidays, we’ve got some fun Instagrammable Pretoria-based options for you to explore that will probably make your friends wish they had stayed. We also feature some of Pretoria’s best swimming pools to take a dip in – probably one of the best answers for a day like today. Then we take a stroll through some of Pretoria’s most beautifully painted Jacaranda streets and give you some insider tips on where to take the best photos. Furthermore, we guide you through the simplistic, yet luxurious dining experience at the local Fermier Restaurant and we show you one of the latest hotspots in town: Goddess Café. Only a month or two ago we all wished for a hot, scorching summer day to come our way and now it’s here! Let’s embrace summer by really enjoying our city to the full this holiday season. It’s such a great time to be in town. P.S. Check out our online page (page 3) where you will be able to take part in some exciting competitions this month and see what you’ll be able to read more about on our website: www.hellopretoria.co.za. Enjoy the read, HP!

JO

Hello Pretoria • November 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

S

ix years ago, Jo Black never imagined to be where he is today. His response to how it feels to be SA’s George Clooney was: “It’s not a great feeling.” He can’t even walk into Nespresso without people freaking out, because they think he’s the guy on the posters! “Why do you want to look like George Clooney if you can be Jo Black?” he asks. He was also named Mr. Pretoria North in 1999 and more recently he got crowned Sarie’s most attractive man in South Africa. “Do you know how you can become the most attractive man in South Africa? Grow a beard, let your body go and then buy your mom SMS bundles that she can vote for you.” Jo’s biggest beard tip: Hello Kitty detangling spray (which is now off the market, boo!). He now uses Johnsons’ detangling spray.

Family comes first In addition to being a very successful singer-songwriter and South Africa’s most attractive man, Jo wears numerous other hats too. First and foremost, he is a husband to his lovely wife and a father to his ten and sever-year-old daughters, “going on sixteen and seventeen” he adds with a nervous laugh. He met his wife when he went for an interview at a car dealership. It was on that day – the first day he saw her – that he told her that he was going to marry her. “She says I was arrogant. I wasn’t really arrogant; I was just so amazed. You

either keep quiet and regret it for the rest of your life and just tell your friends about this beautiful girl you met, or you tell her.” They started dating in 2005 and have now been married for 11 years. His own stage Being a go-getter and entrepreneur like Jo Engelbrecht (yes, that’s his actual surname), he jokingly says that he thinks it isn’t much fun being in his head. “I know what it feels like to have this brain between my ears and it’s not so much fun.” He is one of the partners of The Bearded Butcher – a theatre restaurant that has been a big dream of his for many years. “Five to six years ago – due to fate – I started to make biltong. When my friends went hunting I would process their meat and make biltong to sell. I started a Facebook page, The Bearded Butcher and told my wife that one day The Bearded Butcher will be a massive biltong company and restaurant. When I got this opportunity and my partners and I were thinking of a name, my wife reminded me that the name had always been The Bearded Butcher. This venture happened because of a couple of guys who think out of the box like me.” There is a section at the restaurant that has specially been allocated for Jo’s biltong and he is in the process of setting that up. He is, however, very specific about how it’s made which means he wants to make it himself. “I personally think I make the best biltong I’ve ever tasted.” You can also enjoy The Bearded Butcher’s brew at the restaurant, as well as his own coffee brand – The Bearded Butcher’s Roastery - which you will only find at the restaruant and nowhere else. Performing in his own restaurant is an emotional experience for him. His recent show – Terug na die begin – really took him back to the way things were. He left his band at home and there were only two guitars on stage. “That is what I did for sixteen years. I tried to perform in similar places and all the people that were there didn’t come to listen to me, they just chose that restaurant to dine at.” Now he gets to perform in front of 400 people at his own venue and they actually come to listen to him sing. “If you know where it comes from, this is a huge blessing,” he says. Songs with soul All Jo’s songs come from a personal place in his life. “When I started with my second album, I realised that I had 35 years for my first album. Stories that I wrote an album with. For the second album, I only had a year and a half and life was so fast and busy that there were

BLACK

He might refer to himself as a “skarminkel” from Pretoria North, but he’s been dubbed South Africa’s George Clooney and he is clearly also not just a singer-songwriter, but a formidable entrepreneur. not really new stories… It might have been my situation, but I always think of everyone’s common pain. The one thing that makes you and me similar is joined pain. I can say that I’ve been depressed because I didn’t have money, but you have been depressed because you lost someone in your life. Our joined pain is depression; not what happened to us. It’s the emotion we feel. So, if I write a song like Vrede Vind, it might have been written for my grandfather, but you have probably also lost a grandfather, great grandfather or father. Immediately, my song becomes yours and that is how I go about my writing. Everyone needs to experience my music like I do.” Be That Guy Jo has been visiting schools around the country for many years with BTG Everyday Heroes. “It’s my non-profit organisation and in the last three to four years I’ve visited over 550 schools. It’s more than just a talk. I make contact with the schools, give a motivational talk about how we just need to love and help each other more.” His brother also has a piece in the pie here and does leadership identification and seminars in combination with this. They also do Geared for Life adventure camps and Jo just wrote an app – Heroes Anonymous – which is an anonymous reporting system given to schools allowing children that are feeling helpless due to bullying, fights and suicide feelings to report the situation on a private portal. “I’m looking for Jo at thirteen to tell him to lift up his head. I’m looking for Jo at sixteen to tell him that it gets better as you get older.” Did you know? Jo Black and Roan Ash have been friends for probably the past eight years. After being introduced to each other, Jo asked Roan if he’d like to write some music together. The next morning, Roan pitched at Jo’s house at 9AM “and then he stayed for three weeks. On my couch.” They then had a band that performed for six years and Johan Vorster noticed them both at a show in which they performed together. “Now he is Roan Ash and I am Jo Black and our band’s name was What ships are for.” For the last three years both their careers skyrocketed and they don’t get the opportunity to perform together anymore, which is why they booked the Sun Arena for their recent colab performance. Can you keep a secret? Jo will be releasing a new album in 2020 and all he can say about it is: “It’s something you didn’t expect. I’m going back to my roots.” Hello Pretoria • November 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

JACARANDA

JOURNEYS in Pretoria

Pretoria is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa – especially during the Jacaranda season when all the streets turn purple (and some even white).

I Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Renate Engelbrecht

in Celliers Street in Sunnyside you will find a plaque commemorating the planting of Pretoria’s first two Jacaranda trees. It is situated at the Myrtle Lodge which forms part of Sunnyside Primary School. The trees were planted by JD Celliers in 1888 and even though they were imported from Brazil, they’ve become an integral part of Pretoria’s culture. Who can imagine Pretoria without its Jacarandas? Today, the whole of Pretoria is filled with Jacarandas and between September and November the purple flowers lure locals and tourists to its streets. Even Nelson Mandela was a fan. In his inauguration speech on 10 May 1994 he said: “To my compatriots I have no hesitation in saying that each one of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous jacaranda trees of Pretoria and the mimosa trees of the bushveld.” White gems Did you know that there is a street in Pretoria that boasts white Jacaranda trees? These trees are said to be sterile and were imported from Peru by Pretoria resident H. Bruinslich. If you are looking for a different twist to your photos, visit Herbert Baker Street in Groenkloof to view these beauties.

Picnic with a view The Union Buildings is probably the best spot to get a good view of the city’s Jacarandas. Pack a picnic basket, throw out a blanket and take in the splendour of purple Pretoria. It is also to the East of the Union Buildings, in Government Avenue, that you will find the only place in the city where Jacaranda trees have been planted in double rows on both sides of the street. This was initially done to provide shade to government officials walking back to their residential area of those days, Bryntirion Estate. Good luck charm The Jacaranda flowers are not only there for their beauty. Students from the University of Pretoria and other surrounding colleges and universities believe it to be a good luck charm. If a Jacaranda flower lands on your head, it is believed that you will pass all your subjects! Local photographers’ secret spots l l l l l l

Hello Junior Nanny Hunt - Finding one fit for your family

This time of the year is filled with events, year-end functions and Christmas parties and finding someone trustworthy to look after your little munchkins could easily cause unnecessary headaches.

W

hether you are looking for a full-time nanny who can help you out with the kids, as well as household chores or whether you are looking for an au pair who can watch the kids while you attend all of your end-of-the-year events (plus those crucial date nights that you’ve had to cancel more than once), we’ve gathered some tips and ideas on who to call and where to go.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Renate Engelbrecht

Find a nanny To find the perfect fit in terms of nannies is a vital part of running your household. Securing a happy and safe environment for your children for when you are away is very important and that is why you can’t just hire a nanny on hear-say. Super Nannies has been one of the most trusted nanny training and placement companies since 2006. Like you, they believe your family deserves a super nanny and whether you are looking for a nanny or looking to train your current nanny, Super Nannies is the go-to solution. Their nanny training courses have a very strong childcare component and they work with other service providers that offer additional courses like domestic cooking classes, swimming and driving lessons. 1 www.supernannies.co.za Au pair options Pretoria also has a vast amount of au pair agencies for you to contact, with many keen au pairs who would love to look after your fun little ones (or your difficult teens). This includes Little Sunshines, Au Pair Love and Care, Absolut Au Pairs, Kidos Au Pair and Au Pair Agency. Working through an au pair agency helps you to eliminate any possible hick-ups with most agencies’ candidates undergoing rigorous vetting processes. They are also required to provide verification of all documentation. 1 www.littlesunshines.co.za 1 www.aupairloveandcare.co.za 1 www.au-pair.co.za 1 www.kidosaupair.co.za 1 www.aupairagency.co.za

How to choose the perfect match Have a list of non-negotiables. Whether it is that the nanny needs to have a licence or that the au pair needs to be able to speak German in order for your child to learn another language, it’s all up to you. Schedule an in-person interview in order to get to know the person better. Draw up an agreement. This will prevent confusion in the long run, so be very thorough. Invest in a trial run. This is the ideal opportunity to observe the nanny or au pair’s personality and how they fit into your family’s dynamics. Welcome the nanny or au pair as part of your family. In order for her to make your children feel comfortable, she needs to be comfortable too. Be patient. Finding your rhythm within a whole new family environment could be quite hectic, so give her time to adjust. But at the same time make sure that certain rules are communicated clearly – things like bedtime, nap times, snacks and more.

TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE by being colour conscious

Colour Coach Lien Potgieter says we need to become more colour conscious in order to become who and what we want to be.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Supplied

Transform yourself Lien uses colour as a therapy tool at The Colour Option, with eighteen different colours representing certain meanings. In today’s world, the psychology of colour is mainly used in the marketing and advertising sphere and we often forget that what we wear, eat and decorate also has an impact on our mood and wellbeing. By being more colour conscious, you can get to know the hidden meanings of different colours and eventually identify personal feelings, thoughts and beliefs that could hinder you from being the person you want to be. Transform your business Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and a positive mindset are two of the fundamentals when it comes to success in business and Lien says that colour undoubtedly has an impact on your EQ. Her client assessment helps people to become more self-aware – an important component of emotional intelligence. Your personal colour choices reveal positive and challenging aspects in your personality. Your colour dislikes translate into things you’re not interested in and your current favourite colour gives you clear direction. Colour therapy is very much about selfdevelopment – becoming a better you, a better parent. Lien even wrote a book about it, called Become Colour Conscious and Transform your Experiences. She is currently also busy with a children’s book with therapeutic stories for kids between the ages of eight and eleven. The book mainly focuses on change, emotions, self-image, empathy and storytelling.

HP’s November Colour Crush: VIOLET According to Lien, this means that we need to stretch our imagination and be open to receive knowledge from unusuaal sources. Downfall: We need to forget the past and not worry about the future. We need to live in the moment.

COLOUR GUIDE:

Red eliminates negative thoughts. Orange Gives confidence and makes you feel secure. Yellow helps with concentration and the relief of nervousness, fearfulness and indigestion. Green Eliminates tension, anger and impatience and creates stability. Blue Brings calmness. Indigo reduces the feeling of restlessness and sadness. Violet works wonders for insomnia, nightmares and migraines. Pink the colour of self-love. It also helps to calm aggression.

Did you know? You can win a one-on-one session valued at R850 with Lien Potgieter (online or in Auckland Park, Johannesburg) and explore your being though colour. Whether your challenges lie in your wardrobe, your diet or your home décor, you’ll be able to find ways in which to transform your life by being more colour conscious. GOZONE A health concept

Gozone water has been making waves in the purified water industry officially since 2013 and with their expertise and knowledge they indirectly have a huge, positive impact on their clients’ health.

Why drink Gozone?

Although certain measures are taken to ensure that public drinking water is safe for consumption, it can still contain trace amounts of contaminants that could have a negative impact on your health. It is unfortunate that in South Africa chlorine is the main product used to clean our drinking water by all municipalities – a chemical that has been proven to be one of the largest causes of cancer. Several studies have linked chlorinated water to an increased risk of colorectal cancer specifically. Due to maintenance being supplemented with chemicals and large amounts of sediment in rusty old water pipes that pose as breeding ground for bacteria, it is very important to first remove these impurities from water before consumption and that is exactly where Gozone comes in. They deal with industrial water purification on a daily basis, so it’s safe to say that they can be trusted. In the end, Gozone’s overall concept is health – a great concept in a world where people are becoming more and more health-conscious.

16

Hello Pretoria • November 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

ccording to two of the directors, John and Len Oort, there is a need in the South African market for sustainable entrepreneurship. They chose to use their entrepreneurial expertise and pour it into their water business, Gozone. They’ve smoothed out the flaws that they have identified in other companies and used it to build Gozone’s three pillars: Being price competitive against competition, having products that are competitive when it comes to look and quality and then also being brand competitive.

A

through offering pure drinking water (bottled and refill), sparkling water, healthy juices, ice and more.

Except for being entrepreneurial experts, they also have an even more important role to fulfil which comes in by being ethical in creating sustainability in a hardening economic environment. It is their aim to have all the Gozone branches become leaders in the field of health and wellness, ethically providing solutions to their growing client bases

Gozone is truly going from strength to strength, with a presence in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana and with a new merger that recently took place with Accumation Projects they now also specialise in all automated filling lines, manufacturing high volume machines with a recent installation done in Australia. 1 www.fermierrestaurant.com

Most water companies use reverse osmosis to purify water, which results in ineffective hydration. Gozone has mineral reintroduction filters that reintroduce certain salts and electrolytes that lead to effective hydration. As John puts it: “A lot of people use ozone, but Gozone does ozone right, being the actual manufacturers of up to industrial ozone generators.”

Benefits of drinking purified water: l Nourished, hydrated and

glowing skin

l Improved scalp and hair health l It assists in losing weight l It keeps your joints and

muscles healthy

l It aids digestion l Bacteria, algae, fungi, parasites,

metals like copper and lead and chemicals are removed

Luxurious simplicity at

FERMIER There’s a certain romance attached to a sandy walkway lit by candles in paper bags. Add to that the full moon and superb fine dining in a rustic restaurant and we’re on cloud nine!

A 9-course meal calls for an evening without worries and Fermier’s peaceful atmosphere helps that along splendidly. Together with the glass of bubbly, we were served sourdough bread with homemade butter, duck liver and dukkah – a humble, yet divine start to an exquisite fine dining experience. Crayfish with apple and Kalahari truffle followed and thereafter Ceviche. The sweet bread with capers, anchovy and grapes was served together with a beautifully cut egg filled with a white onion velouté. After that we were impressed with asparagus with duck egg, verjus and truffle naude white 2009 and the Kingklip with pomme anna, peas and confit lemon served with a van Wyk’s Riesling was definitely one of our favourites! The Quail with beetroot, cherries and plum chutney followed and then the lamb with kaiings, cabbage and celeriac. Dessert consisted of two dishes – Huguenot with strawberries, vanilla and beurre noisette and then lastly banana and white chocolate with yoghurt, lime, salted caramel and coconut tuile. If that’s not a meal to your liking, we don’t know what is! Fermier’s interior simplicity and its warm atmosphere undoubtedly and cleverly lets the gently and beautifully plated dishes stand out. If you’re looking for a restaurant to impress, this is it.

H

Fermier Restaurant surprises time and again with an intimate space that allows you to calm your senses and really take in every moment intentionally – that includes observing the chefs at work with an open kitchen that displays their every move. With its rammed earth walls and recycled wood used for the cladding and the doors, the restaurant has a rustic, farm feel and the crockery, tables and chairs have all been designed by artists located at the Karoo Yard. It’s dining with a twist – luxury on plates among simplicity that makes you feel grounded.

18

After being chauffeured to the door by flashlight, we were guided to a two-seater table – one of only a few. The chairs were draped with sheep skin before we were seated, and we were each offered a glass of bubbly – the best way to start off! Then came an evening of pure indulgence. Watching chef Adriaan Maree and his team create magic on plates in this calm and secluded setting is definitely an experience to add to your Pretoria bucket list. In preparation of the festive season

Baking an apple pie is one of the best ways to make a house feel like a home. In fact, it’s a timeold trick used by real estate agents on show day and - even to this day - remains one of famous chef JAN’s ultimate Sunday rituals. He shared his recipe with us, which means now you’ve got pudding sorted for Monday (when it tastes even better). This Apple Pie recipe was given to him by his great friend, Jeanette van Maanen, in Apricale.

APPLE & WALNUT PIE Cooking time: 2 hours Serves: 8

Ingredients:

For the pastry 300g (535ml) cake flour 100g (120ml) caster sugar 2,5ml salt 200g (220ml) unsalted butter, cubed 1 egg 30ml cold water For the apple filling 100g walnuts, shelled 8 Starking apples 100g (110ml) sugar 60g raisins 20ml ground cinnamon 1 egg yolk, beaten

Method:

For the pastry Place the flour, caster sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl and mix the ingredients together with a fork. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients using your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the egg and bring the pastry together using your hands. If the pastry is too dry, add some cold water and mix thoroughly until a dough forms. Wrap the pastry in a damp kitchen cloth and let it rest for 1 hour at room temperature.

Recipe: Jeanette van Maanen Images: www.janthejournal.com

For the apple filling Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Spread the walnuts over a baking tray and toast in the oven for about 10 minutes. Then, take it out and let it cool for about 15 minutes. Chop the walnuts fine with a sharp knife. Peel and core the apples. Have a bowl of cold water with salt ready to keep your peeled apples in. Dropping your peeled apples in a light brine solution will prevent them from browning. Slice the apples into very thin slices. Dry the apples and place them in a large mixing bowl. Add the sugar, raisins and cinnamon and mix through. To assemble the tart Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Roll ⅔ of the pastry out (very thinly) onto a floured surface. Spray a 20cm springform, loosebase cake tin with non-stick food spray. Line the tin with the pastry and cut off the excess pastry hanging over the edge of the tin. Spoon in the filling and then roll out the rest of pastry onto a floured surface. Cut the pastry into long 1,5cm strips and place them on top of the filling in a criss-cross pattern (or any pattern you prefer). Push the edges into the pastry base and brush the pastry with the beaten egg yolk. Bake your pie for 1 hour. Once you’ve taken it out of the oven, let it rest for about 15 minutes before carefully removing the pie from the tin. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. 1 www.janthejournal.com

for November and December

If there is one thing that gets us in the holiday mood, it’s movies! A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK In this romcom by Woodie Allen a young couple’s plans for a romantic weekend in New York turns out to be everything but romantic. Timothée Chalamat (Gatsby) plays the role of a super-rich businessman who can’t choose between his university love (Elle Fanning) and a seductive actress (Selena Gomez). Gatsby plans an exciting tour through the city for him and his girlfriend, Ashleigh. His well-planned itinerary rains out, though and in the end they barely see each other as Asheligh is occupied with a journalism story on filmmaker, Roland Pollard (Live Schreiber). While she has a day filled with exciting encounters, Gatsby finds himself alone in the streets of

New York and eventually meets up with an ex-friend’s younger sister who now has a refreshing self-confidence and a humble personality. New York’s rain plays a very important role in the film. Allen wanted the rain to be a symbol of love and romance. He says that New York is beautiful on those grey, rainy days and that there is something special to the soft light and the idea that the streets are being washed clean. This movie is Allen’s 49th release and it’s his version of the classic Hollywood-style romance. He says it is a love story and he was excited about the idea to paint it against the background of a rainy, romantic New York. In cinemas: Since 25 October PAIN AND GLORY The latest film by the acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Admodόvar is a tale of memory, regret and making peace with the past. It is said that this movie is not just his most personal, but also one of his greatest. Pain and Glory blurs the line between art and life and mixes autobiography with fiction. Sporting a salt and pepper beard and a shock of hair, Antonio Banderas plays the role of filmmaker and onetime provocateur Salvador Mallo and he perfectly captures both the strengths and weaknesses of his character. The film has two tracks – the present in which Salvador makes amends with an old collaborator and friend, Alberto and then

30

promptly gets hooked on heroin which, mixed with his painkillers and generous helpings of alcohol, makes him drift into the past which is the second track of the film. The flashbacks takes him back to his childhood with his mother, Jacinta (Penelope Cruz) in their rural home. Julieta Serrano magnificently presents his mother in her 80s too. This semi-autobiographical film about a master filmmaker reflecting on his career is a study of acceptance, revelation and reconciliation. It is Spain’s official entry for the Foreign Language Category at the Academy Awards and has already won two Cannes Film Festival Awards for best Actor (Antonio Banderas) and Best Composer (Alberto Iglesias). The enduring allure of

MAURITIUS

Flour-like sand, sugar-cane plantations and year-round soul-soothing sun strike an irresistible chord.

Best for: Equal measures of relaxation and activity

Sometimes only Mauritius will do – a dreamy Indian Ocean island where the beaches are eyesearingly white, the water is as swimming-pool blue as it looks on the postcards and the deliciously reliable weather makes it a winter-sun showstopper. Here, more than anywhere else, it’s crucial to pick the right home for the week.

T

he archipelago of Mauritius is thrilling to fly over, and the airplane view of calm lagoons and pancake-batter atolls is sure to blast away any short-haul fogginess. Fly in the morning and be there, barefoot, by lunchtime … or at least cocktail hour. Still sensationally unspoilt with dramatic natural topography, Mauritius feels almost otherworldly ... and there are some deeply smart places to stay. Whether you’re looking for an isolated stretch of sand or a familyfriendly resort, Sun Resorts has enough options to suit every type of traveller. So, what are you waiting for? Hello Pretoria • November 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Discerning guests seeking a blissful haven will instantly fall in love with the grande dame of the Sun Resorts group, the magnificent fivestar Long Beach. Fringing the famed beach at Belle Mare along the untamed East Coast of Mauritius and encompassed by dense tropical gardens, the resort manages to be both incredibly spoiling and completely laidback. The generous luxury rooms are tastefully kitted out with sleek and stylish furniture and natural, mid-toned décor. Each one features a private balcony or terrace and close access to its stretch of beach, garden or pool. That’s not all – king-size beds, speedy Wi-Fi and air-conditioning add to the ultimate personal comfort. If you can, book a Junior Suite with a sea view, which has a stunning sea view including a spacious private furnished terrace overlooking the lagoon. There are several slick restaurants serving elegant food – think inviting breakfast buffets at Le Marché, fresh seafood, shellfish and local specialities at Tides, spectacular Italianinspired dishes at Sapori and Asian cuisine with a modern flair at Chopsticks. Wine buffs should head to our top pick, the quietly glamorous Hasu. We highly recommend the five-course wine-pairing menu, which presents some of the most pristine plates we’ve ever seen, all washed down with perfect wine pairings.

Spa buffs are equally well looked after. Go fully horizontal at the super-luxe Cinq Mondes spa hidden amongst lush gardens and surrounded by water – there are authentic traditional treatments and terrifically good back, neck and shoulder massages as well as high-tech anti-ageing facials and Shellac mani-pedis. The best part is that while you’re enjoying some me-time, the children can be kept blissfully busy at the Sun Kids club, where they can try exciting archery lessons taught by a professional coach, pizza-making classes, painting classes or yoga sessions. Ile aux Cerfs leisure island is the best reason to visit Long Beach. Keen golfers can learn how to play or perfect their swing at the Golf Academy, challenge themselves to an 18-hole course designed by two-time Masters Champion Bernhard Langer or relax on Fillbusters, the exclusive beach for golfers. On the private beach, guests are left alone on their little dot to mooch around the fresh coconut and cocktail bar, stretch out on a day bed or take a dip in the turquoise water. There’s also a public beach, beach restaurants, an adventure park and a wide variety of water sports. Back at the resort, there’s an abundance of beachside activities, land-based activities and water sports. Try the snorkeling, one-hour nature trail and wall climbing. There are also some unforgettable experiences centred around wellbeing, art, food, music and sports from sunrise to sunset as well as chic bars, live music and culinary experiences in the evenings. 1 www.longbeachmauritius.com

A testament to the aesthetics of colonial estates in a bygone era, today the refurbished resort is the epitome of a holiday in paradise.

Guests therefore have the advantage of enjoying the benefits that two spectacular hotels have to offer, such as a wide variety of unlimited land and water sports that are on offer free of charge to all Sugar Beach guests.

Expect a large sushi and sashimi selection plus dishes like seared tuna tartare, rock shrimp tempura, sea bass ceviche and wagyu rib eye steak. The way you spend your time in this

waterworld wonderland is entirely up to you. Spend the day blissfully lounging at the pool or on the flawless beach. SUGAR BEACH

Fresh, fruity cocktails are synonymous with a fine beach holiday at Sugar Beach, so a mixology class with one of the resort’s talented barmen should be right at the top of your to-do list. Another way to embrace the dusk is with a special Mauritian-themed cocktail hour with front-row seats to a gorgeous sunset. There’s no better way to start your day than with invigorating sunrise activities like yoga, Bodyblade or Zumba followed by a healthy detox drink to boost your system. Come sunset, watch the dramatic descent of the sun into the ocean from the water itself on a stand-up paddle board. Water lovers can also indulge in exploring the colourful marine life in the topaz lagoon, enjoying a group activity in the pool or learning a new water sport. Those who’d prefer to not get in the water can view vivid corals and beautiful sea creatures on the phenomenal glass bottom boat or navigate tropical terrain with an exciting mountain bike excursion. 1 www.sugarbeachresort.com

ME-TIME AT

YouBar The perfect on-route escape

L Youbar in Illovo sure has the know-how when it comes to royal treatment – from the friendly welcome to the professional way in which they let you let your hair down, even if it’s just for a moment.

ocated at the Thrupps Illovo Centre, YouBar is the perfect spot to get that beauty fix that you’ve been postponing for so long. If you’ve got some time to spare on-route from or back to the Rosebank Gautrain Station, it’s an easy find and a guaranteed moment of pure relaxation and we say: take it and make it yours! HP loves: That it’s only a few minutes’ Uber (about R30) to Youbar from the Rosebank Gautrain Station, which means you get to spoil yourself on your way back home from your Joburg office. The YouBar space is welcoming with beautiful, tasteful décor and a variety of colours to choose from for your pedicure! In fact, we were lucky enough to be some of the first clients to get to choose from Morgan Taylor’s latest summer range and we just loved its bright options. While indulging in a cup of Rooibos tea on a mirrored tray, we got to compare and choose our favourite colour – Tickle My Keys. It seems that this is the one place where you'll find returning customers all day round. They’ve clearly built up a client base that feels like family and they treat them as such. Even while being an out-of-towner, we felt right at home and that says a lot. We got to experience YouBar’s popular Africology Signature Pedicure, which included an African Potato Wrap which is known for its healing properties. It also S LOVE acts as a brilliant immune booster, is very hydrating and contains Rooibos which adds some antioxidants - a great add-on to any treatment. This 75-minute treatment is pure bliss and apparently many who return for it have come to love it mainly because it's a treatment that allows you to indulge in some me-time. But that’s not all… While the African Potato Wrap does its magic on your feet, you also get to have a neck and shoulder massage!

In addition to their nail bar, YouBar also does waxing, massaging, facials and even eyelash extensions, so if you're ever in the area, be sure to pop in. The Thrupps Illovo Centre boasts numerous restaurants, as well as a Clicks and a Wellness Warehouse, so you’ll be able to do that lastminute errand run before you head home too. 1 www.youbar.co.za Hello Pretoria • November 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

A mechanical trap launches clays at various speeds and different angles and five delegates can shoot at the same time. The shotguns have been modified to fire laser beams at the clays in an environmentally (and client) safe environment and there is no kick or recoil. Spectators can follow the progress on an electronic scoreboard. You can book a photographer at an additional cost and if you’d like to bring your own picnic basket or bring a braai an additional fee will be charged. They also offer the option of a catered lunch at an additional cost. It might be a bit of a drive from Pretoria, but the experience will definitely be worth it! NICHOLIS LOUW

He sang in pubs at the age of 13, he’s been flying solo in the industry for 16 years and you might not know it, but he’s got an opera background. Nicholis Louw is full of surprises at the end of this year…

What’s new? We’ve released a new single – World in Union – in record time! My head is spinning! I recorded the single with Liesl Pieters, basically because there was no one else who could sing it so well. I told Liesl that we need to be very careful, because we’re treading in the footsteps of giants. PJ Powers is a world-renowned artist and very talented.

expensive to record. I’ll do it piece by piece. I think the opportunity you have with singles is that you can release different things months apart. If you release singles, you can do whatever you want. What do we not know about you? I did professional racing in 2014, I am married and have a 4-year old daughter and I would like to bring out a swing album at some stage.

Not many people will know this, but World in Union was written between 1914 and 1916 and it formed part of a production called The Planets. PJ Powers then recorded it in 1994 and got people to write additional lyrics for it – great lyrics. We might have needed this song in 1994 but let me tell you – we need it now more than ever.

Your favourite place in Pretoria to perform at? There is a lodge just outside of Pretoria called Gabatta and I’m doing a Christmas show there on 15 November with a couple of school choirs. We did it last year as well and I really enjoy performing there.

Why this song? It’s Rugby World Cup! That’s the first reason – to support the Bokke. But, if you listen to the words, it is as if it has been written for South Africa and we need it a thousand times more now than in 1994. It’s a message of hope.

What do you do to relax? I like to get into the car and drive. I don’t do it that often anymore now that I have a family, but I always went driving for about two hours in the evening. I loved it. Today, I relax when I drive back home from a show.

What else can your fans look forward to? After what I’ve learned by releasing my first single, I can now start releasing more singles. I might only release another album after the tenth single, because an album is very
