P

ride Month: The time of year when everyone in South Africa remembers that LGBTQ+ people exist, and brands rush to release special-edition rainbow everything. As the editor of Hello Joburg Magazine, it’s an honour to have created a colourful place in print magazines and on the Internet that celebrates queer chefs and artists and our fiercest allies 365 days a year. But scepticism aside, we’d be remiss to not amp up the fabulous festivities to coincide with the month’s celebrations. First off, we have a glittery guide to Joburg’s LGBTQ+ community and culture, which covers everything from how homosexuality is no longer taboo in the City of Gold, to Joburg’s gay-friendly neighbourhoods and pink tourism offerings. Once you’ve got those facts straight (pun intended!), check out our roundup of must-do leisure activities hosted by Pride of Africa and best queer nightlife spots for cabaret, drag, dancing and beyond. Another interesting read can be found in the Arts & Culture section. The changeability of gender roles in the arts is something to be celebrated … and makes for one of my personal favourite features in this issue. Of course, we’ve still got all our usual features this month. Our Restaurant of the Month is the new Mythos at The Zone @ Rosebank and you can trust me when I say it’s just the place to satiate a serious Greek craving in Joburg. Plus, we’re taking our readers on a tour of our favourite restaurants to pig out at, from Zio La Famiglia in Hyde Park to The Jozi Girl Eatery in Broadacres. But we’re warning you: It’s only for those with stomachs of steel! Also be sure to our Beauty & Wellness section for lippies we’re lusting after this season, and Travel for how to rediscover Cape Town – whether you’re an art fancier, a tree hugger, a food buff or a slumber specialist. We’ve got other special surprises in store too. To paraphrase Erika Jayne’s iconic meme, we’re going to give the gays (and the rest of the LGBTQ+ community!) everything they want. We haven’t put together an issue that celebrates all things LGBTQ+ just to do it. It’s important to remember that the community doesn’t exist for the amusement and entertainment of straight cis people – they’re a marginalised group facing very real attacks on their right to simply just be and love who they want to love. We want to make sure our voice plays its part in helping them do just that. Happy reading!

Chris Colfer’s real-life identity and role in Glee gave the world a glimpse of LGBTQ+ realness.

The store has a number of unique features like a denim bar, a play area for kids and digital multi-zone screens with in-store music. There are also new beauty rooms which have taken the traditional beauty counters to the next level. That’s right – M&M’s has brought out a new Salted Caramel edition. These bite-sized snacks are made of a soft and luscious caramel centre, covered in delicious milk chocolate and enclosed in a colourful candy shell. In celebration of this new launch, we chatted to Yellow, the M&M’s mascot for the new flavour, to find out what life is like as an M&M and to get some more details on the new release. Spoiler alert: He’s a big sweetie! E @mmssouthafrica Q @mms_southafrica Describe a day in the life of an M&M. Being an M&M’s mascot is awesome, dude! Ever wondered what it would be like spending every day with your best bud doing fun things? Well, that’s exactly what it’s like to be an M&M’s mascot. I pretty much get to hang out with Red all day, which is awesome ’cause he’s my best bud. And we do fun stuff like go to the movies, movie premiers and swimming, or whatever Red decides we’re going to do, I guess. Oh yeah ... and have fun. We always have loads of fun!

Inspired by their release of Y Eau de Toilette, Y Man Eau de Parfum is the newest addition to the YSL men’s cologne range. Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levine is the face of the new fragrance, which was created by perfumer Dominique Ropion. Described as deep, fresh and masculine, the scent is built around a duet of bergamot and ginger, but is contrasted with fresh citrus, cuts of crunchy green apple and aromatic and sensual woods. The background of the scent has notes of amber wood and Tonka bean. Available at selected Edgars, Woolworths, Truworths and Foschini stores as well as the YSL Beauté Boutique in Sandton City. 1 www.yslbeauty.com

What’s the best thing about being an M&M? Uh? I’d have to say … getting to hang out with Red every day! And doing cool stuff. What’s the worst thing about being an M&M? Well, there was that one time that Red yelled at me ... but that’s just Red sometimes, you know? Like I said, being an M&M’s mascot is awesome so there’s nothing ‘worst’.

A pioneer in the South African gin game, Hope Distillery (formerly known as Hope on Hopkins) is no longer only distilling their own gin, but gin for other brands like Musgrave, Bloedlemoen and Clemengold. They’re also making other spirits such as vodka, agave and rum. To suit these changes, the brand has developed a new visual identity that’s understated but sophisticated. The distillery has also renamed some their products – for example, Hope’s Salt River Gin is now called African Botanical Gin and has been described as South Africa in a glass. 1 www.hopeonhopkins.co.za

I think SA is in for a real sweet treat. *chuckles* Tell us a bit more about the new flavour. All I know is it has a chewy centre and it’s pretty delicious. You can get the new flavour at all major retailers nationwide. Oh, and it’s a limited edition. What’s the best way to eat M&M’s? Any way you want. It’s all good. It’s the world’s most shareable snack so my guess is to share it? I like to share mine with Red. What’s pretty cool is that Drizzle & Dip,The Sweet Rebellion and Angie Batis will be sharing some tasty recipes, so those will be fun ways to eat them too. IT’S A PRIDE THING Our glittery guide to Joburg’s LGBTQ+ scene

Joburg is by no means the gay capital of Africa – Cape Town has that crown snatched – but it’s still home to a thriving LGBTQ+ community and culture. The City of Gold is getting its annual helping of rainbow flags, fun-loving crowds and LGBTQ spirit this month ... and the Johannesburg Pride Parade and Festival, which drew 20,000 people last year, is just the tip of the iceberg.

Are you struggling with your identity? Do you feel lost and alone? HJ reader Shenay O’Brien is a singer, performer, drag artist and LGBTQ+ activist who started an online show earlier this year called We’re Queer, my Dear (#WQMD) that’s basically an online guide to members of the community who have identity issues. “We’ve truly grown as a nation and learned to respect each other. There’s the odd culture clash here and there, but I’m proud to say that Joburg has some of the friendliest, most supportive people celebrating in South Africa!” Shenay says. So far, the response to the show has been fantastic, and the season is already in preproduction. Check it out on YouTube and social media. E @werequeermydear Q@werequeermydearsa

WHEN IS GAY PRIDE IN JOZI Gay Pride events oc ? Africa, culminatin cur throughout the month of Octo g be wi th r in South the 30th Johannesb Festival on Saturd urg Pride Pride is moving itsay, 26 October 2019, starting at 11h0Parade and ambitious ‘Pride ofparade from Melrose Arch to Sand 0. This year, oldest annual Gay Africa’ month. Fun fact? Joburg hoton as part of an the 1994 interim coPride march, which bravely started sts the country’s in 1990 before nstitution. Homosexuality is no longer taboo If you think homosexuality is still a taboo topic in Joburg – think again. While this may still be the case in smaller, rural areas across South Africa, it certainly isn’t here. You won’t find a rainbow-flag covered queer village like Athens, Hannover or Chiang Mai in Joburg, but there are restaurants, bars and clubs especially dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community. The Joburg of today is an integrated city with little to no discrimination against LGBTQ+ people – same-sex couples can mingle freely and are welcome at most establishments as well as recognised LGBTQ ones. Sadly, LGBTQ hate crimes are still common though. Even though South Africa’s political climate has progressed over the years, this hasn’t translated to complete acceptance across society. We can’t know for sure the exact levels of hate crime because South African law doesn’t categorise hate crimes separately from other crimes. As with any change in public perceptions, there’s no magic solution and it’s a process that will take time. There are established gay-friendly neighbourhoods If you’re particularly concerned, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll be totally safe if you stay and play in the suburbs of Melville and Melrose. Melville is a centre of creative energy and modern thinking, and the closest thing to a gay nightlife hub. The popularity of LGBTQ-friendly venues comes and goes, but Liquid Blue cocktail bar located on the bustling 7th Street remains of Joburg’s leading gay-friendly bars. The cocktails are some of the city’s best – our personal favourites are the Liquid Blue Martini with passion fruit vodka and the Melville Nights 2.0 Tiki with a Stroh rum float. Another lively spot situated on this strip is Ratz Bar, a little gay bar with classic 80s rock and disco tunes plus a daily cocktail special between 18h00 and 21h00. Other bars worth checking out in the area are Six Cocktail Bar, Hell’s Kitchen, Xai Xai and Smoking Kills. That’s not all – Melville is also chockfull of uber-chic coffee shops, avantgarde dining spots and hipster boutiques. We highly recommend checking out the brand-new The Whippet Coffee, Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar and La Stalla for a fabulous boozy brunch, Winner Winner Jozi for a laidback dinner or La Petite Maison for a fine-dining spoil. As far as shopping is concerned, Reminiscene should be at the top of your list. At this 20-something-year-old vintage shop, you’ll find an abundance of lace, velvet and horn-rimmed glasses … it’s a thrift shopper’s heaven! 27 Boxes, a shipping container development down the road, is also a great place to go if you’re looking for some new treasures for your wardrobe. Pink tourism is more popular than ever Joburg is home to many gay-friendly places to stay. Some well-known establishments are the Hyatt Regency Johannesburg in Rosebank, Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff in Westcliff, Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa in Morningside and Gold Reef City Theme Park Hotel in Johannesburg. But it goes beyond this – on the travel and tourism front, there are many pink travel and tourism companies who are dedicated to LGBTQ+ travellers. One example is Our Way Travel and Safaris, which prides itself

on a collection of gay-owned, gay-friendly establishments and its Pink Route that travels from Cape Town to Joburg and then on to the Kruger Park and further north. Then there’s Holiday Houseboys AKA ‘your gay-friendly tour guide’ that’s all about getting the most of your holiday with a local, private tour tailored to your interests. The company has a presence in cities such as Istanbul, Bangkok, Hanoi, Bali, Kuala Lumpur and, of course, Joburg. If you have your accommodation plans sorted and are just looking for gay-friendly activities to do, our top pick is the The Queer Johannesburg Tour, a walking and bus tour that takes you into the city’s homosexual past – from its earliest days in the apartheid era to the present day – and includes the buzzing suburb of Hillbrow and the township of Soweto. Spoiler alert: There’s pitstop for refreshments at Wandi’s Restaurant, the best-known shebeen in Soweto, before returning home. It’s an activity that visitors and locals alike will love! GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT!  According to the latest statistics, there are between 400,000 to over 2,000,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people living in South Africa.  South Africa has a complex and diverse history regarding the human rights of LGBTQ people. But, today, people in the LGBTQ community in South Africa have the same rights as nonLGBTQ people.  South Africa’s post-apartheid Constitution was the first in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. South Africa was also the fifth country in the world and the first – and, to date, only – in Africa to legalise same-sex marriage.  Same-sex couples can adopt children jointly and arrange IVF and surrogacy treatments in South Africa.  LGBTQ people enjoy constitutional and statutory protections from discrimination in employment, provision of goods and services and many other areas in South Africa.  South Africa’s niche tourism market – pink tourism – is dedicated to LGBTQ+ travellers. rom 21 September to 2 November, the Rugby Fan Zone at the Cresta Shopping Centre’s Food & Entertainment court will be open to all shoppers and visitors. Here, the whole family can cheer on our boys in Green and Gold.

Advertorial

This year, the ninth Rugby World Cup promises to be one of the most intense competitive tournaments we’ve seen on the 2019 sporting calendar – no less with most teams directing their efforts into ensuring the New Zealand All Blacks don’t take home the trophy for a third consecutive World Cup win. Let us rather bring it home! Perfect for the whole family to enjoy the games, the Cresta Shopping Centre Rugby Fan Zone won’t only be screening every game live – there will also be Rugby themed activities, pre- and post-game entertainment as well as thrilling on-the-spot competitions. So, while the winning teams celebrate in Japan, your team of fellow Bok supporters could also be winning fantastic, instant prizes like digital devices, rugby gear and more from the Centre’s Rugby Fan Zone partners; Huawei, African Bank and Gilbert. The Cresta team also knows that not every little one will be glued to the screen, so there’s entertainment for the kids too. Expect a visit from the Centre’s very own CrestAquarium ‘voice of the ocean’, Crestal, who happens to be a passionate rugby fan herself. There’s a host of other interactive activities that will keep everyone cheering. Go bokke! Bringing the Rugby World Cup closer to you The 2019 Rugby World Cup is here – except it’s happening over 14,000 kilometers away in Japan! That’s why Cresta Shopping Centre is bringing you all the Springbok games and all the excitement up close and personal.

FUN FACTS ALL FANS SHOULD KNOW There are just 20 international teams who make the cut and secure a place in the global tournament. South Africa is, of course, one of them (and our firm favourite). Did you know that only four teams, namely New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and England, have ever won the tournament in its 31-year history? As the games unfold, the top two teams of each pool will advance to the quarter finals, while the top three teams of each pool will also receive automatic qualification to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Now, all that’s left to do is check out Cresta Shopping Centre’s Facebook page and website for more info. Then arrive at the Cresta Shopping Centre Rugby Fan Zone with your friends and family and be part of history in the making. You don’t want to miss it!

his new beauty salon is definitely going to draw in the crowds! Without a doubt, there’s nothing quite like it in Joburg – or the whole country, actually. The preferential parlour is quirky, Insta-worthy and oh-so-eccentric … and should totally be on your radar this month. Okay, okay, we’ll divulge – we’re talking about the brand-new Japanese-inspired salon on 6th Street in Parkhurst, Salon Geisha. To use the word ‘salon’ seems unjust because this extraordinary spot is so much more. It was created in a charming, typical Parkhurst home that’s intimate and cosy with buckets of sunlight. But the most impressive thing about this space is the outrageously flamboyant design and décor. Oh, and the Tea Merchant tea they serve, which gingerly arrives in traditional Japanese style with a pot, saucer and all. Our favourite flavour? The JHB Gold, of course! If that doesn’t tickle your toes, put your feet up and opt for a glass of bubbles.

Words Bianca Spinner Images Supplied.

The fact that their email address begins with ‘girlboss@’ is every bit of evidence you need to visit. Founded by Gwen Bircham, who says the concept just came to her one morning, the space radiates self-love, beauty and fierce female power. In Geisha society, women are empowered – they own and run their businesses – but in case you needed a little bit more persuasion, they’re also seen as mystical goddesses. So, guess how you’ll feel after your pamper? Now, let’s get down to the ’gram. There’s a rosy pink cherry blossom tree, which signifies the start of spring and renewal and adds a harmonious Feng Shui to the ambience, as well as blushing pink velvet couches, two locally made life-size Betty Boop figurines, authentic hard wood floors and elaborate neon ornamentation. There’s also a noticeable artistic flair to the space – think Geisha wallpaper and garishly flowered wall art that’s so beautiful it’s almost aural. It’s so easy to get lost in the decorative printed patterns but try focus on your five-star mani and pedi too! Keep in mind that no munchkins (two- or four-legged) are allowed. Sorry moms, but at this exclusive spot you’re forced to enjoy your me-time without the weepy, moaning rug rats! 60 6th Street, Parkhurst m 071 095 0337 1 www.geisha.co.za E @geishabeautiful Q @salon_geisha

TEBOGO MANAKA Good posture versus bad posture

This month, fitness trainer Tebogo Manaka will be exploring two basic exercises:The squat and the plank. “These are simple exercises, but I’ve seen many people doing them incorrectly at the gym,” he says. Allow Tebogo to demonstrate how to squat and plank the right way while noting the dos and don’ts of each exercise. EXERCISE #1: BODYWEIGHT SQUATS Good posture: Your body is folded from your waist. You’re sitting back as if you’re sitting on a chair. Your bum (or glutes) is stuck out. Your weight is suspended on your heels.

Bad posture: Your back is hunched. Your knees are beyond your toes. Your heels are lifting off the ground.

EXERCISE #2: PLANK (CORE) Good posture: At the back, you’re anchored on your toes and your legs are kept straight with your knees locked. Your back is straight and slightly rounded. Your pelvis is tucked in and your abs tightened. At the front, you’re anchored on your forearms and your head is positioned above your shoulders.

Bad posture: Your lower back is sagged. Your pelvic area is unengaged. Your head is in the air. Your body weight is emphasised on your shoulders.

If you have any questions, feel free to DM Tebogo on Instagram!

Mythos ROSEBANK

Where your plate will sing with fresh flavours To satiate a serious Greek craving in Joburg, head to the brandnew Mythos at The Zone @ Rosebank for ultra-fresh whole grilled fish, juicy lamb prepared myriad ways plus a smattering of excellent options for dipping into creamy, garlicky spreads.

F

or years, Greek restaurants in Joburg have felt as hidden away as the army inside a Trojan Horse. However, things have more than come on since Parea’s heydey. The Illovo restaurant is still a hotbed for Greek food, catering to settlements of cheerful Greek and Cypriot expatriates hungry for souvlaki, kleftiko and gigantes as good as they taste back home. But a new breed of restaurants doing modern Greek small plates, ace riffs on the classics and fab vegetarian dishes abounds across the city. Enter the Mythos group of Greek restaurants.

elegant, boasting evil eyes, blue and white décor, plenty of outside tables with umbrellas for al fresco dining and floor-to-ceiling concertina doors that slide back to ensure an excellent indooroutdoor flow. It also packs atmosphere in by the bucketload thanks to multi-generational families and The Parks’ ladies-who-lunch chattering away as well as big birthday groups knocking back Greek wine like Retsina and Onoma.

Then there’s our favourite part – the menu, which is a superb exploration on Greek cuisine. Seafood is the king here: We highly recommend the psari sti skara AKA fresh whole line fish of the day as well as the Norwegian salmon seared and served with rice and teriyaki sauce. Other varieties are also on offer, from east coast sole and kingklip, to sardines and prawns. Of course, you just have to round out your meal with one of the many mezze, such as deep-fried falafels, halloumi baked If flying to the Greek isles for lunch isn’t quite in with a sesame crust and drizzled with honey, the cards, the airy new Rosebank restaurant is pickled baby octopus, sardines grilled with coarse the next best thing. You don’t feel like you’re in a concrete jungle when you step into this gorgeous sea salt, skewers of chicken marinated in olive spot that captures the idyllic simplicity and oil and herbs, and lamb loin chops grilled with warmth of the Greek islands. The space is stylishly lemon and oregano. There’s also a dizzying array

of dips, including delicately whipped codfish roe, oven-roasted aubergine and spicy feta. Meat eaters needn’t despair, as they’re spoilt for choice with many meaty mains. Standouts include the chargrilled BBQ lamb rib rack, grilled beef fillet topped with Kalamata olives, chicken breasts topped with a feta, mushroom olive sauce, and grilled peri-peri chicken burger. On the sweet side, you’re simply spoilt for choice with options like traditional rice pudding, doughnuts, baklava and kataifi. Our personal favourites are the baklava cheesecake, baked with pecan nuts, cinnamon and syrup, and the home-style pistachio and halva ice cream. Epicurean Joburgers, do yourselves a favour and go taste these modern takes on traditional recipes. Coupled with Greek hospitality, we can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon this summer! THE BULL RUN RESTAURANT A temple of dry age and mineral funk

Joburg is a carne-loving town, but one area we truly excel in is steakhouses. Just look at The Bull Run Restaurant in Sandton – it’s a celebratory confab that demands to be marked with a juicy slab of beef in a pool of its own juices on your plate, a steak knife clutched in your hand and a napkin tucked beneath your chin.

he Bull Run Restaurant, located in the city’s financial district across the road from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, is no longer a mustily masculine beef house that peddles in porterhouse. After relaunching last year August following a R20-million revamp, it’s become seen as a modern meat shrine where you can keep it tender with rib eyes, sirloins, T-bones and beyond. There’s even a bronze sculpture that was unveiled during the launch – a raging bull that measures three metres by two metres, epitomising the powerful dynamism of the district. Locals and tourists flock outside the glorified landmark for commemorative selfies with the bull after conquering their marbled meats. When visiting this new-wave meatery, start off at the Dollar Bar, where you can loosen your tie and breathe out your jetlag. The signature Bull Run is hands-down the best drink on the menu. A twist on the French 75, it’s made with a double shot of gin shaken with elderflower, orange bitters and fresh lemon juice, served in a champagne flute topped up with sparkling wine and garnished with lemon zest. The ladies will love the strong yet sweet Candyfloss Margarita, made with silver tequila, Triple Sec and a dash of lime poured over a fluff of candyfloss, or the Chocolate Rose – a delicate combination of rose, Amarula and Nachtmusiek served straight up in a coupe glass garnished with a fresh rose petal. Next, grab a table and get ready to tuck into the famous Prawn Ritz or Cheesey Garlic Prawns to start. The latter, prepared with Café de Paris, cheese sauce and grated cheese with warm pita bread on the side, is the definition of indulgence. For mains, the Jalapeño & Feta Fillet is a must. The kitchen makes sure it arrives at your table still sizzling, stuffed with feta, wrapped with prosciutto and topped with Café de Paris butter and jalapeño. The lamb cutlets gratinated with a rosemary, black pepper and garlic and mustard crust as well as the beef brisket slowly braised in red wine and flavoured with truffle and port are also fantastic choices. Pescatarians will be delighted that there are ample seafood options too, from a generous seafood platter, to a tender-as-sashimi fillet of kingklip basted with lemon, garlic, paprika and olive oil. The menu also offers queen prawns, king prawns and Falklands calamari. Vegetarians will enjoy the fried halloumi and avocado salad or the wild mushroom gnocci. For dessert, don’t miss the Berry Brûlée - a dreamy combo of wild berry baked custard with Boudoir biscuit.

STEVE MARESH

the restauranteur

The Local Grill

dining dining 26outout

Some restaurant owners look for meat suppliers. The Local Grill looks for strategic partners instead and therein, my carnivorous friends, lies the difference. This is certainly no conveyer and process belt operation, so if you’re looking for a quick in-and-out lunch or dinner, go somewhere a little more generic. The Local Grill is a special experience that you’ll want to savour with friends and family.

C

hatting to Steve Maresh, owner of The Local Grill in Parktown North, it becomes clear from the get-go that every single cut of meat, how it’s aged, stored and eventually served is carefully thought out to give the customer a fantastic meal – every time. If there’s one thing you’ll take away from a visit to The Local Grill, it’s that not all steaks are fed or raised equal and most of the time, your average consumers (ourselves included) don’t really know the origin or history of the cut that’s on their plate. Steve has spent two decades trying to change this. Steve follows strict ‘field to fork’ principles, which means the beef is sourced from the best producers, aged on the premises and cut to order. He works closely with some of the country’s best farmers and butchers to not only provide customers with the best quality and most ethically cared for meat, but to educate them about what they’re eating too. Whether it’s grain- or grass-fed, sourced locally or from afar, wet- or dry-aged, all the information is served upfront so you can make the most informed meat decision. Over 20,000 customers a year are taken on The Local Grill kitchen tour. “We offer every customer a tour of the concept kitchen where we share our various cooking techniques and give them a view of the meat locker” says Steve. “This immediately changes the nature of the relationship with the customer. They get to see what takes place behind the scenes, which naturally makes them feel more invested in what we’re trying to do. Our Beef Appreciation classes are also offered with the intention to better educate customers around the meat they eat and how it's prepared.”

Then, of course, there’s the food. It’s clear why The Local Grill has such loyal patrons and attracts customers from all over the world. The grilled calamari starter, which has been on the menu since day dot, is tender and tasty. Squeeze some lemon liberally over it and then douse it in black pepper – trust us. The beef cheek starter served on thyme-infused polenta bricks is rich and saucy and the subtle flavour of star anise in the meat works perfectly. As for the Diary Cow cut, while the meat was slightly tougher than a rump or sirloin, it was without doubt the most tasty and flavorsome piece of meat we’ve ever eaten. By day, the concept kitchen is an innovative beef lab where Steve and his team work with some of the lower carcass cuts that never see the light of day to develop other products. We can’t tell you too much more at this stage but stay tuned for some exciting things on the go. When it comes to the beef lab, Steve and his team put on their sustainability hats to look for innovative ways to use the whole carcass to reduce wastage and ultimately derive value where there wasn’t.

BISTRO DOLCE VITA

It’s one of Joburg’s most popular Italian restaurants and now the owners of Dolci Café have opened a second establishment – Bistro Dolce Vita – in the heart of Sandton. The new bistro is owned and run by chef Jackie Righi-Boyd and her husband Clayton Boyd as well as their partner Sergio Caon, who previously owned and ran Treviso Café in Craighall. Bistro Dolce Vita still has the Italian leaning that chef Jackie has become known for, but it is more cosmopolitan and also includes recipes from other parts of the world. There’s a small permanent menu with regular specials and a rotation of the chefs that work at Dolci Café and Bistro Dolce Vita. The Regent, 21 West Road South, Morningside m 011 581 0232

WHEN IN DOUBT, PIG OUT! Throw out your scales and pile up your plates

We Joburgers are known for our hearty appetites. Whether we’re chowing down on dumplings, devouring burritos or gnawing at ribs, we want those plates to overflow! So, we’re taking you on a tour of our favourite restaurants to pig out at. Warning: this article is only for those with stomachs of steel!

FARM TO TABLE … AND TABLE TO SOUL Amid concrete, skyscrapers and the Gautrain,

the City of Gold, Joburgers needn’t look far to get their fix of olive oil-doused antipasti, meaty roasts, comforting bowls of carbs and maybe even some gelato for dessert. But there’s a certain spot that really takes the cake – er, cannoli, as it were – and that’s Zio La Famiglia. This little gem of an Italian restaurant situated in the heart of Hyde Park goes beyond your average ho-hum red sauce joints and serves up refined versions of classic dishes with unique twists, thanks to chef Jono’s creative blend of techniques and influences that leave you expecting one thing and tasting something entirely different. Start with the caprese prepared with sweet, juicy in-season tomatoes, tomato jam, basil, pangrattato, balsamic and fior di latte – soft, fresh mozzarella that’s our idea of milky perfection. For mains, order the shellfish linguine, tossed with a generous amount of mussels, prawns and calamari and served in your choice of Napolitana, cream or white wine, garlic and fresh herbs sauce. You definitely won’t have space for dessert but order the moreish Nutella cheescake anyway – made on a biscuit crumb and topped with Nutella frosting, you’re guaranteed to lick the plate clean after devouring the entire slice. MEAT IS MEAT AND  AJoburgMAN MUST EAT may be known for its Mexican food –

particularly our tacos – but there’s a type of cuisine from even further south of the border that we have an eye on since Rodizio Melrose Arch opened its doors: Brazilian food. Here, there’s more to the Brazilian fare than your typical steakhouse – think platters of grilled chouriço, creamy chicken livers, chicken trinchado, grilled calamari and fresh Cape mussels plus a selection of tapas, salads, meat and poultry, fish and shellfish and vegetarian dishes. But that's not all – for just R255, meat connoisseurs can indulge in the ‘Meat Rodizio’ and feast on as much as they like of various cuts of slow-roasted prime beef, tender chicken, succulent pork, sensational leg of lamb and traditional chouriço. Simply turn the green side of your robot up to tell the carvers to ‘bring it on’ or the red side up to tell them to ‘stop for now’. the harvest table at the new Olives & Plates Hyde Park proves that people crave the flavour and nutrients of natural ingredients – even if there isn’t a farm in sight. At lunchtime every Monday to Friday, you can fill up on the weigh-and-pay offering, which boasts a beautiful spread of eats made with the freshest ingredients and an abundance of herbs. There’s also a standard menu that includes all the now Olives & Plates classics, from the oak-smoked salmon benedict and organic açaí bowl, to the chicken Caesar salad and sage and supreme chicken fillet. Side note … we’re equally obsessed with the Insta-worthy space that was previously home to EB Social Kitchen & Bar, which has been refreshed with crystal chandeliers plus splashes of soft pink and powder blue. The convenient thing about ghosts is that they tend to hang around old cities everywhere, including Jozi. It ends with a chilling climax in a graveyard – at midnight, of course! 1 www.mysteryghostbus.co.za

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Channel your inner Carrie and Mr Big by visiting Sandton Library and checking out the love letters and love poems of great writers and famous figures. The iconic library is situated on Nelson Mandela Square and offers a place to escape in peaceful, book-filled pleasure with over 92 000 books on offer. The Braamfontein Spruit is one of the most popular mountain biking trails in the country. It’s a greenbelt in the middle of a city and is 60km long, but don’t worry – it’s an easy to moderate level trail. The trail starts in Melville Koppies AKA jacaranda central and runs all the way through to Paulshof. It also joins up with paths from various other points along the route, namely Albert’s Farm, Emmarentia, Delta Park, The Sandton Field and Study Centre in Parkmore, Sandton Field, Riverside and Bryanston Drive. For safety reasons, it’s recommended that you ride in groups of at least four.

YOGA AND BREAKFAST

An invigorating morning yoga session followed by an alfresco breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel - The Westcliff isn’t just a fabulous way to #treatyoself, but also to admire the jacarandas. Steven from Yoga Works gives the yoga class, which is followed by a healthy breakfast buffet – think fruits, juices, smoothies, tea, coffee and snacks – that you can enjoy on the lawns. Keep an eye on the Yoga Works Facebook page for other upcoming events. 67 Jan Smuts Avenue, Westcliff m 072 835 2525 Park at Marks Park Sports Club across Judith Road, Emmarentia and access from North Gate

YOUNG BLOOD Sport of Kings – behind the scenes

Have you ever wondered what goes on in the life of aspiring jockeys, trainers, vets, stipendary stewards and commentators in the racing world? Racing It’s a Rush’s new documentary might give you some insight…

Though many of the jockeys from the golden era are still very much involved in horse racing in other professions – some as trainers, some as Stipendary stewards and others as riding masters and coaches – there is a buzzing undercurrent of ‘young blood’ pulsing through the racecourse and jockey room. A new generation of up and coming champions who are holding their own – some even smashing decade-old Championship records whilst still in their apprenticeship.

stipendary stewards and even commentators who make up the next generation of racing greats. Whilst rivals on the track, away from the races most of the jockeys and trainers are friends and comrades – fiercely protective of one another and the sport they passionately represent. Their careers begin at an early age, thrusting them into the proverbial spotlight whilst still navigating their studies and managing additional pressures most teenagers don’t even consider - such as weight management and injury prevention. Like all millennials, these young bloods have active social lives, but it comes with the added responsibilities and pressures of being professional athletes. It is a sport characterized by highs and lows, moments of sweet victory and devastating defeat, narrow losses and split-second decision making. With interviews with the likes of Lyle Hewitson, Muzi Yeni, Callan Murray and Allistair Cohen, join us as we find out more about the Sport of Kings from the proverbial horse’s mouths. 1 E Q D

Whilst in some respects the sport has seen significant changes over the years – including the introduction of Tellytrack and online betting – it has also remained the same in many ways, including methods of handicapping, race day procedures and the old world charm that accompanies visits to the parade ring and winners enclosure.

A HOT NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN

The best queer spots for cabaret, drag, dancing and beyond

For … drag dining at its finest Occupying a prominent spot on the Illovo nightlife scene, Beefcakes is regularly voted one of Joburg’s best LGBTQ venues. For … 1980s pop, rock and disco Melville cuties can call Ratz Bar their own. This classic, no-attitude gay bar has outlasted many other drinkeries on the strip due to its combination of cosy couches, generous happy hours and friendly bartenders. Home to a friendly crowd of guys and gals, it’s a great place for pre-drinks before a big night out. Come midnight, the tables are cleared and the high-energy dance music draws a mixed, flirty crowd. Daytime brings gawking tourists, but the evenings are still for partying. LIGHTS, CAMERA … GENDER? WHO CARES! A standing ovation for character fluidity in the arts

The performing arts has been challenging gender boundaries for decades. From men playing women in ancient Greece to Nancy Cartwright playing the voice of Bart Simpson, the changeability of gender roles in the arts is something to be celebrated. These are some of our favourite performances.

42

Nancy Cartwright in The Simpsons Bart Simpson is one of the most recognisable cartoon voices in the history of television, like Chucky from Rugrats, which makes sense because they’re voiced by the same person, Nancy Cartwright. Cartwright showed up to an audition back in the 1980s to audition for the role of Lisa Simpson but decided Bart’s character was more interesting (and bratty and rude, obvs). She auditioned and the creator of the show, Matt Groening, hired her on the spot. Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love This is a fictional tale in which an imaginary love affair develops between playwright William Shakespeare (played by Joseph Fiennes) and a young woman named Viola de Lesseps (hello, Gwyneth) posing as a man so she can grab the limelight in one of his plays. Of course, Paltrow, who plays the role of Thomas Kent, wins Shakespeare over … and so begins this romantic period comedy drama for those with a penchant for the genre. The role earned her the best actress Oscar title about two decades ago and in her own words, “Changed her [my] life.” Paltrow’s incredible success in playing this male character takes on Shakespeare’s and the outlandish Elizabethan notion in the 1600s that acting was deemed inappropriate for women. Well, now who’s laughing all the way to the bank, old dead gents? Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor Let’s be honest: A piece like this simply wouldn’t be complete without an ode to Eddie Murphy as one of the most dynamic actors of his time when it comes to invoking different characters – both young and old, male and female. Not only does Murphy play the entire Klump Family in this family comedy, but also gives each character their own unique persona.

Cate Blanchett in I’m Not There In Todd Hayne’s unconventional biopic, I’m Not There, various actors take on the challenge of playing legendary musician Bob Dylan as they portray different facets of Dylan’s public personas. Amongst the lineup of actors, which includes Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere, came the unanticipated casting of award-winning actress Cate Blanchett. Blanchett plays Dylan as he was in the 1960s: A little bit jaded and wickedly witty … and her performance is simply brilliant. Blanchett received many accolades for this particular role, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. If there’s only one thing you take away from this list, it’s making sure that you watch this!

Advertorial

Delivering on its promise to bring the best in entertainment to Pretoria, Time Square has a spectacular lineup of local and international artists gracing the stage at the Sun Arena in October 2019.

P

erhaps the biggest highlight is the internationally acclaimed Dire Straits Experience featuring veteran Dire Straits members, Chris White and Chris Whitten, on the 15th. “They’ll perform one show only during their trip to South Africa and the Sun Arena is where it’s at. What a coup to have these iconic artists on our stage. This is a once in a lifetime experience,” says Brett Hoppé, general manager of Time Square. With a record 120 million albums sold, which continue to increase as new fans discover the majestic band’s massive worldwide appeal, the music of rock legends Dire Straits lives on. Naturally, Dire Straits’ fans attending the show at the Sun Arena can look forward to hearing all of their favourites, including evergreen hits such as ‘Money for Nothing’, ‘Sultans of Swing’, ‘Walk of Life’ and many more others. Between them, they have worked with the likes of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, George Michael, The Killers and many more. Just a few days later on the 18th, some of South Africa’s biggest artists take to the stage at the Sun Arena for Francois van Coke & Vriende.

The show is buoyed by the sellout success of Francois van Coke & Vriende in 2018. Artists and bands who are back for an encore with Francois are Die Heuwels Fantasties, Riky Rick, Jack Parow, Early B, Fokofpolisiekar, Riana Nel, Danie du Toit (Spoegwolf), Laudo Liebenberg (aKING), Van Coke Kartel, Arno Carstens and Coenie de Villiers. Francois will also use the concert to introduce his fans to his third solo album, Dagdrome in Suburbia (Daydreaming in Suburbia). The new album features collaborations with two of the new friends in the lineup for Francois van Coke & Vriende next month, Riky Rick and Danie du Toit, the front man for Spoegwolf. These brand-new collaborations

will be performed live for the first time at the Sun Arena. Riana Nel is another new addition to the show this year and also performed at the Cape Town leg of Francois van Coke & Vriende in May. Expect moving and fascinating insights into Nataniël’s unique perspective on the world as he boldly explores the state of the world today, from his personal life to politics and everything in between. Nataniël will delve into the age-old phenomenon of the big versus the small, the ever-present struggle between the indestructible and the threatened, the constant war between the individual and the establishment, and the tiring debate between the political and the intelligent. “It gives us immense pride to welcome this legendary South African performer back to Emperors Palace – the home of local entertainment,” says Irvin Nkosi, the resort’s Promotions and Entertainment Manager. “From his beautiful blues and jazz numbers to his sensational costumes designed by the awardwinning Floris Louw, this is one show that should not to be missed!” Always fantastical, funny and unpredictable, Nataniël will share the stage with a talented and well-known cast of local artists, including Charl du Plessis on the keyboard, Juan Oosthuizen on guitar, Brendan Ross on keyboards, saxophone and vocals, Werner Spies on bass, Peter Auret on the drums, and Dihan Slabbert and Nicolaas Swart on vocals. TALKING ABOUT IDENTITY

How do you identify? How you define yourself in a world so loud your voice may potentially be drowned out? These heavy topics allow incredible room to create art that not only addresses the conversation, but also presents a host of views that will inspire, scare and entertain you.

The Good Things Guy Brent Lindeque jumped to prominence as ‘The Sandwich Guy’ when he turned a viral game encouraging people to down beers into him handing out food to those in need. The Internet sensation chose to go even further with his influence by setting up The Good Things Guy, a web portal that shares positive South African news every day. Brent is an openly gay 30-something living in Joburg. He opens up about his own struggles and how he remains so positive through his content on his site in both written and video content. It’s the perfect place to find joy and feel revitalised. You’ll fall in love with humans again!

Zephany: Two Mothers, One Daughter Many remember the story of Zephany Nurse, the baby stolen at birth and found at 17, when in a strange twist of fate her younger biological sister arrived at her high school. For the first time in a case that spans 21 years we hear from Miche Solomon, the stolen baby now mother, about her journey from being Miche, to Zephany and back to Miche. Her biography is now available and shares deep insight into her own struggle to find identity in a world so confusing while navigating a bizarre twist. How do you cope when the world you know becomes a lie?

Joker Joker drops on 4 October in cinemas … but the movie isn’t going to be the usual superhero fan films of late. Instead, Joaquin Phoenix takes up a role made famous by Heath Ledger and almost destroyed by Jared Leto, in a story about how the terrifying villain in Gotham City came to be. The movie focuses on how we cope when we try to find our place in a world of depression, crime and sadness, while exploring the effect of loss and circumstance on the psyche of someone still trying to find themselves. It will be dark and somewhat terrifying but is likely to be one of the smash BoxOffice hits of 2019.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie Netflix has taken The Hangover’s Zach Galifanakis and his hit internet show Between Two Ferns and turned it into a movie. The smash-hit show poked fun at celebrities and showcased how ridiculous their lives are. The movie promises the same with your favourite celebrities making an appearance and allowing Galifanakis to point out how ridiculous fame and the new Internet culture is. John Ham, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mathew Mcconaughey, Will Farrell and many others all feature. You’ll laugh a lot and be reminded that sometimes we can poke fun at the ridiculous standards set by celebrity culture.

Rediscover

CAPE TOWN 48

...and become magnetised by the Mother City effect

Hello Joburg • October 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

travel It’s the most beautiful corner of South Africa. The icy crystalline waters of the Atlantic sea blend franticly with the warm currents of the Indian Ocean. There’s a specific scent about it: It’s fresh, crisp and unpolluted; a fragrant frenzy … and you’ll soon know exactly why you came here.

W

e visit Cape Town every year, and without a doubt, so do most South Africans. The city experience is usually compressed into one paragraph of what to do and where to go, but we thought we’d give it a twist. So, we swooped down into Cape Town and moulded the city into four unique adventures fit for all sorts of travellers. FOR THE ART FANCIER: STAY AT THE SILO HOTEL Set inside a refurbished silo grain with a façade unlike any other, this jewel of the Cape is simply a masterpiece. The hotel is designed with convex windows that bulge outwards, artistic flair and intricate precision. It’s like the owners slept inside the dilapidated silo for weeks before it opened just to observe where the best light hits accurately and at what time of day … it’s sheer perfection. The silo is an original structure – a historic building built in 1921 that’s been reimagined by industrial designer Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio in London. It’s a modern, stark and industrial space that’s a piece of artwork in itself. Liz Biden and her husband own this exquisite hotel and it forms part of the esteemed Royal Portfolio collection, which Royal Malewane, Birkenhead House and La Residence also fall under. She designs and styles each and every hotel and is inspired by her travels around the world where she’s always on the lookout for exquisite pieces of furniture, distinctive chandeliers and exotic fabrics. You’ll notice a current theme running throughout all the hotels: The celebration of art. Staying at this five-star hotel, you’ll have your very own museum tucked underneath your room, as the hotel is in the grain elevator portion of the grain silo building. You’ll wake up to breakfast in bed with bubbles in hand and a majestic view of the mountain … and then you’ll marvel at the art pieces in your room and scattered throughout the walls of the hotel. Post breakfast, you can meander to the modern art museum, the Zeitz MOCAA, which rivals the likes of MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London and the Prado museum in Madrid. The focus here is on contemporary African art and discovering some of Africa’s incredible upand-coming talent. Also visit the basement level and get a peek at the hotel’s very own gallery of African contemporary art. The finesse, the cityscape views and the food at the Granary  Café – no Silo stay is complete without a meal here! Assume LOVES top-notch ingredients and beautiful flavours and be sure to order the crisp chili whitebait salad and the prawn tagliatelle.

FOR THE TREE HUGGER: STAY AT DE HOOP COLLECTION NATURE RESERVE Just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town International Airport, this nature reserve is a remarkable place. Here, fynbos smudges the landscape, bontebok roam freely and ostrich trek for hours. There really is only one location to consider upon entering the nature reserve, and that’s De Hoop Collection. There many different types of accommodation options, but we recommend the main manor house, which was first built in 1700. It was originally a farmhouse and the original owners bred Spanish stallions and adored wildlife so much that they left a window open in the roof so the swallows could fly in and nest. This gives way to the De Hoop Collection motto, which is that all species coexist peacefully, just as nature intended it to be.

De Hoop

The Manor House is cosy with three bedrooms that all catch the morning rays and have a classic country cottage feel. Salvaged wooden beams from a shipwreck are used as part of the structure of the house, which has adorned bathrooms with Victorian baths all en-suite with imposing hard wood floors. Outside the house is a commanding oversized fig tree, and if you look beyond it you’ll find over 30 nests with a constant frenzy of chirps, tweets and twitters. It’s the most pleasant sound to wake up to every morning. There are plenty of activities too, so you won’t ever get bored. There are hikes, nature walks, guided walks and nature drives, not forgetting a spa for a relaxing pre-dinner full body massage. Dining is conducted beautifully – everything sings in synchronicity at The Fig Tree Restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We beg you not to leave without trying the flawless trout! After dinner, you’ll return to the room with the scent of smoky wood and relax in the lounge with your favourite novel and a warm cup of tea. Heaven! The whale watching here is  unmatched, as is the amount of activities they have on offer – think LOVES mountain biking, an eco-boat cruise on the De Hoop Vlei, a one-hour vulture hike experience to view these fascinating creatures on the vulture deck, an interpretive marine walk exploring the coastal rock pools and sandy beaches and more. PS: If you travel during August or September, you’ll easily spot whales!

T

he day kicked off at the towering rooftop bar that is San Deck at Tsogo’s Sun Sandton Sun hotel in the heart of Sandton for welcome drinks and dazzling views. Our guests, including Jessica van Heerden (@jessica_ vanheerden), Dee Mandic (@thatstotallyfetch_sa) and Charmaine Ramalope-Makhubela (@ glamfoodiesa), sipped some of San Deck’s most popular cocktails – from the cool San Sunset to the colourful San Martini – while they snapped selfies for the ’gram. After all, cocktails taste better when you’re drinking them in the sky! A short stroll to the Sandton Gautrain station later, we all hopped on the train to Rosebank and were there in a mere four minutes. From there, we headed to the brand-new Mythos restaurant at The Zone @ Rosebank for a Greek feast of different meze, such as falafels, halloumi, dolmades, keftethes, biftekias and souvlakias – not forgetting the bottles of white wine on the side. For dessert, we were treated to one of the best sweet treats we’ve had all year: Loukoumades (AKA Greek doughnuts) drizzled with honey, pecan nuts and cinnamon. Delicious! After lunch, we got back on the train at the Rosebank Gautrain station and took it to Park Station. Another four minutes later, we were getting off the train and into an Uber for a short drive to The Marabi Club, Joburg’s jazz jewel in New Doornfontein. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly bouncers and then taken upstairs to rooftop of The Hallmark Hotel, the boutique hotel that the jazz club is housed inside. It was perfect timing: The cityscape views at golden hour were nothing short of mesmerising. Paired with live jazz and the best cocktails in town (the Skillachi house cocktail is a must-try!), we couldn’t have asked for a better end to the day. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Joburg local or visitor – one thing you simply must add to your Jozi bucket list is a foodie journey through the city using the Gautrain. It’s quick, safe and immaculately clean, and the stations are conveniently within close proximity to some of Joburg’s best-loved restaurants and bars. Cheers to that!

At the country’s only luxury airport hotel, you can expect nothing less than the crème de la crème. A short walk from the arrival’s hall, the InterContinental touts 138 impeccably appointed rooms, including two lavish suites, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the tarmac – but you’ll never hear a plane take off or land thanks to excellent soundproofing. Clear your head at Camelot Spa, where you can opt for massage therapy or a specialised skin treatment while taking in awe-inspiring views of Joburg – the best balm for a busy day – or enjoy the sleek, indoor heated swimming pool, hydro bath and steam room. After some pampering, head to Quills Restaurant, where an 18-metre porcupine mobile suspended from the ceiling sets the tone, while the spirit of Africa is reflected in authentic dishes like slow-cooked springbok shank infused with an apricot and almond merlot jus, and chicken galantine stuffed with pistachio nuts. Set directly adjacent to the airport, the Southern Sun is both an architectural marvel and a biz traveller’s dream. With direct pedestrian access and stacked with 366 comfortable and tastefully furnished en-suite rooms, the hotel is hardly Plan B material. A continental breakfast buffet of fresh bread and pastries, cheeses and cold cuts freshens every morning, and dinners are prime time for Mediterranean-themed dishes at Bernoulli’s Restaurant, from angel hair pasta tossed with diced crayfish tail to pan-fried duck breast fillet served on a sautéed warm vegetable salad followed by homemade blueberry pie topped with whipped cream. Sneak to Caroline’s Day Spa & Salon for a hydration facial, aromatherapy massage, back wrap or hot oil hair treatment and you’ll feel as good as new before that big meeting. PREMIER HOTEL

A mere 2.7km from the airport, the Premier Hotel is pretty swanky for what could easily be another mediocre highway hotel. The 275-room hotel, buffeted by sprawling gardens, looks and feels a little like a tropical oasis – but with better amenities. Take a dip in the pool or, better yet, treat yourself to an Evolving Hammam package at Evolve Day Spa - a signature ritual based on old Turkish baths - that includes a full body cleanse and exfoliation in the hammam room plus a back, neck and shoulder massage. Before you crash, take some time to mingle at the bar and then take the party to the warm and welcoming Kubatana Restaurant for a dinner of high-end African fare. 73 Gladiator Street, Rhodesfield, Kempton Park m 011 393 8000 1 www.premierhotels.co.za

CANDÎCE VAN EEDEN Eye Care Awareness Month is commemorated from 20 September to 17 October to raise awareness about the importance of eye health. With that in mind, we sat down with Candîce van Eeden, owner of Vision Works in Fourways and Dainfern, to find out everything you could possibly want to know about eye tests, glasses and contact lenses … plus a crazy fact you didn’t know about your eyes.

How long have you been a practising optometrist? I qualified from the University of Johannesburg in 2010 and started working in my first practice in December that year, so nine years this December. I’ve owned Vision Works Fourways for four years and Dainfern for three years and have an enormous passion for optometry. I even have a tattoo of a pair of glasses on my forearm. What’s the number-one concern patients have about their eyes? The main reason people come for an eye test is because they experience blurry vision in either the distance or while reading. The second reason is due to eye irritations or infections, and a close third is because they’re suffering from headaches. Should you have an eye test if you suffer from headaches? Most certainly yes. I find it so interesting how many people go to the extremes of seeing physiotherapists, neurologists and headaches clinics – some even go for MRI and CT scans – before going for a simple eye test as many headaches are caused by your eyes. Even if you believe you see clearly, an eye test should be the first thing you do to alleviate headaches. Tell-tale signs that your eyes are causing your headaches include pain at the back of your head (at the base), frontal lobe (forehead) or temporal lobes. The occipital lobe, the part of your brain that sees, is located at the back-bottom section of your brain, hence the headache is located there. This is very often misdiagnosed as neck or back issues. Often, there’s more pain on one side than the other, which is a sign that one eye is either doing all the work or has the larger prescription. Your headaches will also more than often come later in the day after you’ve been on a computer for some hours and aren’t nearly as severe on days off.

64

What eye problems can cause headaches? The reason your eyes can cause headaches is due to any form of prescription. If you’re far-sighted (need glasses primarily for close work), you’ll get headaches when you do close work – including using your cellphone or computer, reading, knitting or sewing – for prolonged periods of time. If you’re short-sighted, you’ll get headaches from being under- or over-corrected. Under-corrected means your prescription is too weak and you have to strain or squint to see clearly, which mainly causes frontal headaches. However, the biggest cause of eye-related headaches is astigmatism; a fancy word that means your eyes are oval instead of perfectly round. This is by no means unique – pretty much everyone who wears any form of prescription has astigmatism. It’s the main form of prescription that can go undiagnosed for several years as you can see everything, but it’s slightly warped or has a mild halo. Most patients who believe they have perfect vision often have astigmatism. Hello Joburg • September 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Tell us a fun fact we probably didn't know about our eyes. Most people don’t know that there are tiny little bugs that live inside our eyelashes. They serve a very important purpose of keeping our lashes clean, however, in some people they overpopulate, causing red, sore, itchy and crusty eyelids. This can be easily treated, so consult your optometrist if you have any of these symptoms. What makes the Mo eyewear range different? We so love Mó! Vision Works Optometrists are the only holders of the brand – it’s our exclusive in-house brand – and we’re exceptionally proud of it. Mo glasses are funky, diverse, unique and very affordable. We import them from Spain and want the South African market to start adopting the same mindset that the Spanish market has, which is that you should change up your glasses every six months. You should have more pairs of glasses than shoes. When you see someone, what do they look at first – your face or your feet? My point exactly! We bring in a completely new range of Mo glasses every six months with over 100 unique styles to choose from. It’s no wonder that many of our patients walk away with more than one. What's the starting price of Mo frames? Mó frames sell for R1,399 and Mo sunglasses sell for R1,500. Discovery medical aid members qualify for 20% off this price as we’re preferred providers. What eyewear trends have you noticed recently? The metal frame is back and in full swing! For the longest time, big, plastic frames have been in fashion, but we’re finally moving over to stunning metal frames. Brands are bringing them out in the most fantastic shapes and colours, and we’re absolutely loving it. Other styles that are still very much on trend are crystal (see-through) frames, rose gold frames and thick, chunky black frames. Round shape frames are still the number-one choice and we just adore them because optically, they’re the best.
