FEATURES: DEAR CHEF

16

Never mind Dear Diary, come and share your feelings with Dear Chef between 8 -10 April 2014. Just saying! While still busy putting the icing on the cake, we spoke to Stefano Mihalitsianos about his brand new deli - Dear Chef. If warm baked treats, fresh pain au chocolat and a tart or two get you excited then take note. JOZI ON A BUDGET

It’s true - it’s expensive to eat out these days. But in some places, it’s a little cheaper than others. Which is why you keep us around - naturally. We did some scouting from breakfast, lunch and dinner. Enjoy! JOZI COFFEE CULTURE

20

If there was a way to bottle all of Joburgs glorious coffees and their cultures, we would be delighted. However Jozi really has so much to offer that we had to handpick our favorites. Bursting with all things coffee, I decided to dig deep into everything roasted, including beans

and heavenly aromas. Exciting things are happening on our streets and now is the time to enjoy our cities coffee civilization.

Walter Sisulu Square is a prominent location in Jozi which consists of a hotel, a museum, restaurants and a function facility to host events for locals and tourists. Having defined itself as a heritage site, Walter Sisulu Sqaure is a tourist attraction, an authentic depiction of the integration of all people within the hub of South Africa. REVIVAL OF ROODEPOORT 48 & 49 THEATRE Roodepoort Theatre was established in 1981 by the City of Roodepoort and throughout the years there were several names changes (Sasol Promusica, Promusica Theatre, Joburg Promusica) and the vision of the theatre has taken many a turn on the road to success. This created confusion amongst patrons and as a result the theatre lost its identity. It is essential therefore that the theatre re-establishes itself within the community and surrounding areas.

Too Much Punch for Judy tells the true story of an incident which happened on May 20th 1983. Using only the words of those involved or closely affected, the play explores the problems surrounding the death of Joanna when her sister was at the wheel in a drink-drive incident. The play looks at the sister’s relationship with each other and their mother. It then concentrates on the actual crash and immediate aftermath, mainly through the eyes of the first witness at the scene. PC Chris Caten, in real life a good friend of the family, then has to break news of Joanna’s death to her mother and Judy in turn, before the mother and daughter are left to deal with their loss. STER-KINEKOR ANNOUNCES OPENING OF THREE NEW LUXURIOUS CINE PRESTIGE SITES Continuing in its efforts to ensure that South Africans experience cinema in the most advanced theatre environments, Ster-Kinekor is delighted to announce that it is expanding its luxurious Cine Prestige theatre offering to three more sites. In the next few months, the ultimate venue in which to relax and enjoy a movie will be available to cinema-goers at The Grove in Pretoria East, at its flagship site at Gateway in Durban and in Sandton City in Johannesburg. “The exclusive Cine Prestige concept, the ‘business class’ of cinema theatres, was launched at The Zone in Rosebank in 2012, and extended to our new complex at Cradlestone Mall, which houses two of these cinemas, when the mall opened in

November last year. It has proved to be an extremely popular option in which to watch a film, and our decision to introduce this upgraded format at more of our cinemas is as a result of positive audience feedback. The builds at these new sites join our growing Cine Prestige offering, and bring the number of these luxury cinemas to an impressive eight,” says Fiaz Mahomed, CEO of Ster-Kinekor. These innovations follow the company’s roll-out of the full digital conversion at all Ster-Kinekor cinemas towards the end of 2013. The result of this is that now every site boasts the latest in digital projector technology and quality surroundsound speaker systems, as the company continues to satisfy cinema audiences’ demand for the latest in cinema technology. www.sterkinekor.com | 082 16789Facebook: SterKinekor Theatres | Twitter: @SKTheatres

PARK CAFE Known for their brilliant breakfasts and light lunches, if you haven’t been to Park Cafe then you are missing out. #AvoidFOMO A daytime cafe that serves coffee with a serious zing and uses only the freshest ingredients, the Park Cafe is adored for its Express Breakie among other menu items of course. How about spicy tomato and crispy bacon served on toasted ciabatta to get your day started and maybe the chicken mayonnaise Salad with avo, almonds and parmesan to keep you going from lunch on.

The café is owned and run by sisters Vicky Ross and Lexi Reckling who also own the adjacent Polish Nail Spa. Filled with an eclectic mix of customers from the artsy to the more serious business meeting, day after day, the café is an easy place to have a quick cup of coffee or linger over an indulgent lunch. While the owners may not be trained chefs, their food just goes to show that learning on the job can be just as good - if not better. No offence to our Pruleith trained ladies and gents of course. NORTHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE IS GROWING ITS FAMILY Loyal shoppers and visitors are sure to have noticed that there are many changes happening at Northgate Shopping Centre! With an inclusion of new entrance, more fashion stores and store expansionscosting a massive amount of R150 million - the centre will be equipped to fulfill all your shopping desires. Northgate Shopping Centre was built during the time when ‘bigbox’ discounters became the fashion. The successes of Pick & Pay Hypermarket first launched in Brackenfell, Cape Town, was instrumental in the development of Northgate Hyper. With dreams of creating a centre offering convenience when most people bought groceries once a month or once a week from a value ‘bigbox’ tenant, Sasol Pension Fund joined forces with architect Bental Abramson and builder Wilson Bailey Homes to make their dreams a reality – Northgate Shopping Centre was the answer. Owners and Management of Northgate continue to dream big for this successful centre and an expansion is already underway to bring the mall up to a brilliant 100 000sqm of glorious retail space. An additional 1 500sqm will be added including a new entrance and fashion wing across from the Clicks store. Fashion stores include Cotton On, Cape Union Mart, Factorie and many more! The new fashion wing and entrance is planned to open by April 2014. Boardman’s, Mr. Price Weekend, Jay Jays, Sterns, Truworths and Woolworths will be expanding into bigger stores and some will be relocating into new homes within Northgate. A traffic circle will be implemented by the Engen Garage and McDonalds off of Northumberland Road easing the flow of traffic in and out of the centre. The parking at Entrance 7 (Checkers and Dis Chem entrance) will be complete by mid-November giving shoppers more parking space. The final completion date for the entire project is the 4th of August 2014 and we couldn’t be more excited for the fresh new additions that will join the Northgate family. www.northgate.co.za | 011 794 1687

Dear Chef Brand New Continental Deli & Restaurant Opening In Bedfordview

N

ever mind Dear Diary, come and share your feelings with Dear Chef between 8 -10 April 2014. Just saying! While still busy putting the icing on the cake, we spoke to Stefano Mihalitsianos about his brand new deli - Dear Chef. If warm baked treats, fresh pain au chocolat and a tart or two get you excited then take note. Getting straight to the point - what can the hungry expect? Well this is the spot to fill your basket with some of the world’s finest ingredients you can find on this side of the equator. Then go straight home to prepare wholesome, healthy meals in the comfort of your own home. Dear Chef offers ingredients that aren’t readily available in your average grocery store - that’s enough to excite any foodie if you ask us.

Well it seems Dear Chef has a solution. “With our delivered catering, we meet our valued foodie’s needs in preparing meals for the family dinner table, or the corporate function’s canapés and delicious three-course spreads. In visiting our store, the extensive continental deli display, coffee bar and retail section allow for one to browse freely as if stepping into their very own pantry. Our customers will observe an array of beautifully cooked meals, inspired by the old, rustic recipes yet modelled on the new, healthy alternatives. Customers can expect to be allured by the finest ingredients, infused oils and spices, delectable cold meats and cheeses of continental Europe, all while sipping leisurely on a freshly squeezed juice.” Um - yes please! Where has Dear Chef been all our lives?

“HEALTHY MEALS IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME”

“OUR CUSTOMERS WILL OBSERVE AN ARRAY OF BEAUTIFULLY COOKED MEALS”

Stefano knows that most of us get caught up in our busy days and find ourselves too occupied to worry about cooking at the end of it - ultimately sacrificing on the quality of our meals for the sake of convenience.

Very much a family venture, Stefano explains just how the dynamic works. Take a group of old friends and family, combine their common interests and adoration for food with a knack for preparing something yum, and a little business know-

16

Hello Johannesburg April 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

how and Stefano says it is the best company you could hope for. And it’s that feeling of family that he wants the customers to feel too. “We want to engender an environment in which people feel at home and comfortably tend to their culinary curiosity and needs, all the while sharing a story with us about their weekend. It is of the utmost importance to me, one could say my main priority, to form solid customer relations and maintain good service for the long term.” The rise in eateries in Bedfordview in the last few years reflects an inquisitive palate in the suburb. Add to that Stefano’s history of living in the area for many years and it’s a perfect match. “We know our environment and our community well. It is the perfect platform off which to start our tasteful empire and fill the gap in the market, and the stomachs!”

“WE KNOW OUR ENVIRONMENT AND OUR COMMUNITY WELL” As for their signature offering? Stefano is prepared to sign off on the fact that everything is signature. “Our products and ingredients are all handpicked; our recipes measured

with care and precision. If we can’t make something properly, we won’t offer it at all.” But if he must choose? Try one of their ready gourmet sandwiches with a smokey Spanish Ham and creamy Stilton, or if you’re in the mood for Mediterranean, perhaps a portion or two of the best moussaka you’ll ever taste! We will definitely take him up on that.

“TRY ONE OF THEIR READY GOURMET SANDWICHES WITH A SMOKEY SPANISH HAM AND CREAMY STILTON” Bubbling with excitement as launch day grows near, of course Stefano has had the odd sleepless night that any new parent would in the build up. But the excitement certainly outweighs the jittery pre-open nerves. He leaves us with some words of wisdom “after all, a crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety. We would have to agree! THE DEETS: Key West Shopping Centre, 43 Van Buuren Road Bedfordview 011 450 0120

RISE SHINE

MUGG & BEAN

(anywhere) - but we really like the one in Killarney You can’t really go wrong with a M&B breakfast and bottomless coffee now can you? And don’t think it’s all muffins, and chunky toasties either. What to eat: Delite Breakfast: Poached egg and hickory ham on health toast with cream cheese, cherry tomatoes, spring onions and a side of fresh apple. Cost: R39.90. Tip: A slice of lemon meringue may not have been budgeted for by your bank or your hips - but it’s worth the guilt. THE DEETS: www.muggandbean.com 0860 672 326

TASHA’S

Don’t roll your eyes. Not everything on the menu requires a second mortgage so be smart with your choices. In fact, if you’re price savvy you can get away with a seriously healthy and filling breakie for under R50. What to eat: Forever Young; rolled oats soaked in apple juice mixed with crunchy muesli topped with yoghurt, mixed berries and maple syrup served in a glass. Cost: R48. This one is pretty manageable on your lonesome and in its tranquil setting you can catch a break from your significant other. SENSATIONAL SUGA Cakes – Sweet Treats – Desserts

L

avish tarts, beautifully decorated cakes, fancy desserts and meltin-your-mouth sweet treats. What’s not to love? I had to sit down with Crystal, the owner of Sensational Suga to find out more about her venture into the world of sugar. Tell us a little bit more about Crystal and where your sugary journey began. Sensational Suga was inspired by my love of chocolate, sugar and all things sweet. At first it was just a personal little indulgence – crafting cappuccino balls to munch on all weekend, baking meringues to pass a Thursday night or decorating cupcakes just because it was three months, two weeks and four days to my birthday. But I soon realised that, like everything else in life, baked goods taste even better when shared with those you love. With that, weekends previously reserved for use solely as a time to catch up on my marketing studies, turned into baking marathons. It wasn’t long before the word spread by mouth and it suddenly dawned on me that it really is possible to live your dream and do what you’re passionate about.

24

So with that, Sensational Suga was born! You are an ambassador for “Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer” share with us a bit more about this and your involvement in the cause. I got involved with Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer during the National Cupcake Day in September 2013. The event is to create awareness and raise funds for children with Cancer. This is a solely community driven project where they ask “Cupcake Angels” to bake and donate cupcakes. Last year the event was held at 45 malls across South Africa and R1, 1 million was raised on the day. I am a PROUD ambassador for Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer and I urge all the bakers out there to get involved by hosting your own Party of HOPE at your company or child’s school. This charity does not only focus on fundraising but also on educating the parents on the Cancer Early Warning Signs. Early detection saves lives! Some bakers seem to focus

Hello Johannesburg April 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

on the beauty of the cake but the taste is just not there. Other focus solely on the taste. Where do you draw the line between creating a good-looking product and paying attention to the actual taste? To me taste is not negotiable! With society focussed on their weight, every calorie needs to be worth it. People eat with their eyes, so whether it’s a cupcake, meringue or cookie, it needs to look attractive. You must get used to all the yummy goodies that you bake all day but what is your ultimate indulgence? Honestly… a cup of tea, my spoon and a bowl of chocolate ganache! What is the best way to repair a cracked cake, when it flips out of the pan and some of it decides to stay in the pan? Preparation is crucial in baking! Spring-form baking tins work the best. Ensure that you have coated the tin well with Spray n Cook beforehand. Alternatively you can line the tin with baking paper. If you’ve skipped both these steps and the

cake cracks, you can spread a little icing onto your cake plate to ensure that no broken pieces fall off. You can also use some icing to stick loose pieces back together. Voila! What are some of your tips for decorating the perfect cupcake. - Use only the best ingredients: real butter, vanilla pods or es sence, fresh eggs etc. These all add to your final product. - Make sure that your cupcake has cooled down before icing it. - Buttercream icing is an easy yet delicious option for all ages. It needs to be the right tempera ture or you’ll struggle if it’s just been taken out the fridge. - Play around with different nozzles for pretty designs and add a little colouring to pretty them up. Alternatively, add a few sprinkles. - Be consistent with the pressure you use when icing with a piping bag. - Lastly, practice makes perfect, so don’t give up! “BE WARNED, THE CHOCOLATE MUFFINS ARE ‘MORE-ISH’” For something sweet you have to try the apple cake soaked in cream or the Portuguese tarts. And some will tell you that Grate makes the best French croissants this side of town. Having an early morning meeting with clients at the office? Grate provides fresh muffin and fruit platters and warm oats and honey that will get any meeting off to a good start. They also deliver right to your door and record time for the hungry too. It’s fantastic, and its popularity is slowly growing as it is spoken about non-stop by hipsters and those who have a love of beer…or films…or mixing metaphors.

hich do you eat first ... the ears, the feet or the tail of your chocolate Easter bunny? Regardless of where you start, there’s something about Easter chocolate that captures the imagination, no matter what your age. Maybe it’s the ceremony of unwrapping the bright foil, or the satisfying crack as your teeth break the glossy chocolate shell. Whatever it is, Easter just wouldn’t be Easter without chocolate. Easter isn’t just an excuse to eat chocolate – it’s practically a licence to indulge, making Easter a massive industry worldwide. In America, some 90-million chocolate bunnies are produced annually; Americans spend almost $2.1bn on Easter chocs and sweets each year. In the UK, Easter chocolate sales are worth around £500m a year. While there are no similar figures for the local market, Easter is nonetheless a high-demand period for chocolate. This year, Beyers Chocolates will make over two-million hollow chocolate eggs and one-million hollow chocolate bunnies, using 200 tons of chocolate to fill its Easter orders from major retailers around the country. (You’ve probably been chomping on Beyers’ eggs, bunnies and chocolate chickens for decades without even realising it, since Beyers Chocolates has been producing house-brand Easter goodies for South Africa’s top

retailers for almost 25 years.)

Beyers Chocolates will also be producing thousands of Easter gift boxes of hand-decorated chocolates and truffles under its own brand this Easter, to ensure there’s an Easter treat for all ages. “Easter isn’t just for children,” says Beyers. “It’s a time when everyone can experience the joy of chocolate.” EASTER CHOCOLATE TRIVIA

Dining With A Great View

• The first chocolate eggs were made in the early 1800s. They were handmade using a painstaking process of lining egg-shaped moulds with layer upon layer of chocolate. • Early chocolate eggs were available only in dark chocolate with a smooth finish, and were decorated with chocolate piping and marzipan. • The ‘cracked-egg’ finish is known as the ‘crocodile’ finish. It was introduced by a German chocolatier as a way of hiding imperfections in the chocolate shell. • The world’s biggest chocolate Easter bunny was made right here in South Africa. Sculpted by local artist Harry Johnson in 2010, this 3.82m tall, three-ton bunny is the world record holder when it comes to chocolate bunnies. After being exhibited in Sandton City, Joburg, it was broken up and shared amongst some 250 disadvantaged children. www.beyerschocolates.com | Beyers factory shop, 28 Derrick Road, Spartan

CARTIER LAUNCHES NEW PANTHERE FRAGRANCE A symbol of Cartier Femininity

“The panther is of all the animals the only one with a naturally pleasant scent. The smell of the breath of the panther is agreeable to all other creatures, which is why she hunts hidden from view, luring her prey with her scent.” - THEOPHRASTUS

S

o, what exactly is the symbolism behind the brand new La Panthere fragrance by Cartier? The panther is the symbol of Cartier femininity: divine, exquisite and rebellious simultaneously. In a word: free. Free to love and live life to the full, with passion, eye to eye.

“FREE TO LOVE AND LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL”

The panther first inspired a Cartier perfume
in the 1980s. The fragrance captured the zeitgeist of its day but was in need of an update,
a more contemporary silage, an unexplored, almost paradoxical accord: a feral floral. The Hello Joburg team were invited to the launch of the lavishly, extravagant fragrance which was held at the Cartier Store in Sandton City. With its fresh, evocative notes of the fresh flower gardenia the fragrance is illuminated by the pure, rawness and reactionary of the presence of the lively flower enswathed in velvety
chypre nuances. We were mesmerized.

“WITH ITS FRESH, EVOCATIVE NOTES OF THE FRESH FLOWER GARDENIA” The aesthetics: The actual bottle is carved from within in a groundbreaking feat of craftsmanship. It would be a travesty to throw the bottle away, it’s a keeper, it’s a trea-

sure. “A panther poised like a heart of precious stone is carved within a block of glass. This enigmatic, masterfully executed bottle endows a feline presence with feral tones. The unprecedented bottle is carved from within an incredible feat employed for the first time in perfumery. As the secrets of its mystery clocks once fascinated, the Maison captures the imagination once again with another enigmatic technique.”

The aroma: The beautiful fragrance is encapsulating and can one easily fill the room with the fresh fragrance and marvel in its fierce yet floral ambiguity. Its impossible not to focus on the scent which is like a color in a way, you feel it, you see it, you marvel in it. With La Panthere the air seems as if its filled with traces of blush and powder, French Champagne, aromatic liquors and tobacco and of course a fine gentleman.

“A PANTHER POISED LIKE A HEART OF PRECIOUS STONE IS CARVED WITHIN A BLOCK OF GLASS”

“SIMPLY PUT IT’S A MASTERPIECE”

How? This extraordinary totem elicits wonder and fascination. Square jaw and beveled eyes gaze out from an angular head sculpted line by line. The streamlined, facetted features of the pared-down design are softened by the gentle glint of sunlight. Simply put it’s Masterpiece.

The La Panthere fragrance by Cartier is positioned with the world’s powerhouse fragrances, depicted by high-profile societies. It is truly a work of art! THE DEETS: Store U13, Sandton City Shopping Centre, Rivonia Road, Sandown 011 666 2800 www.cartier.com By: Bianca Maletsky @beemaletsky

he name “Sorbet” first appeared halfway down the list when Ian Fuhr initially embarked on the opening of the Sorbet stores. Although it was a well-known ice cream, the name Sorbet conjured up images of freshness, tantalizing taste and beautiful pastel colours. Ian phoned Liz Goldberg (who used to own a home salon before joining Sorbet) and said, “I love Sorbet” and Liz said, “Me too”…. and at that moment the brand Sorbet was born…

The Sorbet stores were officially launched on the 1st of August 2005, with 5 salons. In October 2006, the Sorbet Society loyalty program was launched. “This has become the backbone of the entire business and is currently approaching 100,000 members.” Today in 2014 there are fifty-eight sorbet stores in Gauteng alone and ninety throughout the country. Why is Sorbet so successful? Well it is really quite simple and unpretentious. Sorbet wants to colour you happy while you indulge, relax, unwind and get pampered to the max. It’s cheerful and fresh and will brighten up your day in an instant. The stores are created in such a comfortable and delightful manner that you really just want to hang with a friend and enjoy a cup of tea whilst satisfyingly enjoying a

Moreover it seems us Joburgers really value peace and not being pulled in every direction. We value our time and money, especially just converging from a recession. And the good news is that Sorbet understands and empathizes with our values. Its affordable, it’s tranquilizing and it even makes you smile. We were certainly smiling from ear to ear when we visited the Parkhurst branch. Immediately after stepping into the store, we felt serenity, a comfort, it felt just like home. We of course had a little pampering of our own and were treated to a marvelous Dermalogica Facial and then enjoyed a Deluxe Manicure. Talk about being spoiled right! Lets put it this way, the beauty therapist had to literally drag us out of the bed… yes it was that gratifying! But we have to say the most remarkable and inspirational aspect about Sorbet is not the aesthetics of the stores or the first-class treatments but rather the 5 Driving Principles that they follow to achieve their highest purpose and the community’s highest value and purpose: • Passionate Service • Selfless Community • Servant Leadership • Unwavering Integrity • Individual growth THE SORBET PROMISE: IF YOU ARE NOT TOTALLY SASISFIED WITH YOUR TREATMENT YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY THE DEETS: 011 202 7940 4th Avenue Parkhurst info@sorbet.co.za www.sorbet.co.za By: Bianca Maletsky @beemaletsky

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST THE FLU THIS WINTER Winter Remedies & Tips On Preventing Flu

S

Summer is coming to an end and according to Solgar expert Dr Rowena Thompson we should start preparing ourselves now against the flu. Here are a few interesting points on winter remedies and some tips on how to prevent colds and flu. . According to Life Extension, receiving an annual flu shot is an effort many individuals, make in an attempt to prevent influenza infection. The reason is that it mobilizes what is known as acquired immunity. After the body has been “primed” with specific, non-infective viruses in the form of a vaccine, the immune system can then make antibodies to protect against future infection with these viruses. However, for a flu vaccine to even begin to protect against the influenza virus contained within it, the vaccinated individual must first have sound immune function so that the immune system can properly respond to stimulation by the vaccine’s antigen. Scientists have recently found a way to boost the effectiveness of the flu vaccine. Exciting new evidence shows that, taken together for two weeks prior to vaccination, the amino acids L-theanine and L-cystine enhance the efficacy of the flu vaccine. This delivers strong protection against the flu virus. Remarkably, this same combination has been shown to reduce the incidence of the common

cold by 58%. L-Cysteine 500mg and L-Theanine 150mg are available from Solgar at selected health shops and pharmacies. FLU PREVENTION TIPS FROM SOLGAR

Rediscover your Spirit

Teach your children about good hygiene. Simple practices like the ones below can help prevent colds and flu. - Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. - Stay away from people who are sick. - Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. - Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. - If someone in the household is sick, try to keep the sick person in a separate room from others in the household, if possible. - Keep surfaces like bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, kitchen counters and toys for children clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label. - Throw tissues and other disposable items used by sick persons in your household in the bin

Walter Sisulu Square eKliptown: Make sure the next turn is yours… A turn to Walter Sisulu Square eKliptown

W

alter Sisulu Square is a prominent location in Jozi which consists of a hotel, a museum, restaurants and a function facility to host events for locals and tourists. Having defined itself as a heritage site, Walter Sisulu Sqaure is a tourist attraction, an authentic depiction of the integration of all people within the hub of South Africa.

“proudly hosts the first 4 star hotel” A bit about the history of the area: Walter Sisulu Square is the place where the Freedom Charter was drafted in 1955, and in 2005 was opened to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Charter, whose articles have become the cornerstone of the South African Constitution. The Walter Sisulu Square is part of what we call the Eco Museum together with Kliptown , the first multiracial township in South Africa with integrated religions and a lot of “soul fire “ from locals who

kept the spirit of ubuntu burning despite obvious challenges. The Walter Sisulu Square proudly hosts the first 4 star hotel in the township whilst still boasting one of the most effective hawkering trades in the country, with very little distinction to what was originally there even in the 1950’s, the buzz which was the main reason why the Freedom Charter was drafted here.

“Walter Sisulu Square is a Heritage site” Because Walter Sisulu Square is a Heritage site it draws a lot of tourists and scholars, both on school level and tertiary level for research and insight , but as business hub it attracts formal and informal entrepreneurs with both commercial and retail flair. More exciting about a visit to Walter Sisulu Square is the Eco Museum element where one can go on a tour around the Kliptown township to see the surrounding area as it was in the 50’s, feasting eyes on prominent places and the ordinary people that where there when the Congress of the People meet on these grounds

“provides and validates their freedom and rights as voters in South Africa.” What does the Walter Sisulu represent to Joburgers? Walter Sisulu represents a proud South African history, whilst giving an entertainment hub for Joburgers and travellers. There are monthly Rhythm Cafe session which draws Joburger’s and Sowetan’s. The Hotel and Restaurants are used by Joburgers for hangouts, whilst the food market is a favorite to locals, spaza shop owners and housewives. It is a tourist destination that each and every Joburger should make time to see as it provides and validates their freedom and rights as voters in South Africa. The place itself was built mainly by businesses and locals, who are Joburgers and thus should be seen as a beacon of hope that all is possible when we work and stand together as it was even in 1955 How has it remained contemporary? The diversity of tenants at The

Square, keep the place contemporary by the clientele they attract. The infrastructure and design of The Square is intended to be as timeless as possibly accommodating any form of role one wishes The Square to play, but most importantly the events hosted at The Square draws individuals from all sorts of life and demographics, and the Marketing team is working on marketing approach that will enhance that even more Some of the various events/functions the square has hosted: We have hosted the 6th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, Miss World twice, M-net Channel O awards twice, Presidential events , governmental events, various musical festival, example Black Coffee’s Africa Rising, Red Bull, Adidas, expos example Bridal and Beauty Expos, The Soweto festival and has even been used as a fan park and a shooting location for movies, TV adverts and documentaries Cnr Klipspruit Valley Road & Union Road Kliptown, Soweto. Nothing Better Then A Movie Night Out With The Girls

MARRYING BLACK GIRLS FOR GUYS WHO AREN’T BLACK by Hagen Engler

BELLE Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in 18th century England.

What happens when a white-guy goofball, armchair liberal hooks up with a blackdiamond, Africanist and shoe fetishist? Marrying Black Girls for Guys who aren’t Black describes Hagen Engler’s journey from being the whitest person this side of a Smokie concert to being slightly blacker. Living with a gorgeous, militant black woman has helped this exFHM editor understand cultural and economic reality as well as realise that while he can appreciate the kwaito-house works of Oskido and the later releases of Letta Mbulu, he will never enjoy Basketball Wives, Kenny Lattimore, or boiled tripe.

- J.F SPINNER

CLICHéS

Marrying Black Girls for Guys who aren’t Black is a brilliantly funny book on our emerging, common culture. It’s cultural exchange over the TV remote; race relations in the contested space between the sink, the toaster and the microwave, as yet another mixed marriage cocks up the race debate. LIFE •

CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY Make Freedom Day About More Than a Long Weekend With City Sightseeing

T

he 27th of April is Freedom Day, which is marked by a public holiday. Good news because this year it falls on a Sunday, meaning that Monday the 28th is a holiday and so we all get to enjoy a long weekend.

“BUT FREEDOM DAY IS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN A DAY OFF” But Freedom Day is about so much more than a day off. It is a day that celebrates freedom and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994. This year is of particular significance as we are celebrating 20 years of democracy.

“A FUN, MEMORABLE DAY OUT FOR THE KIDS” The meaning and reason behind Freedom Day is one that we should also teach our children about so that they too can understand how far South Africa has come and be proud of a democratic South Africa. However – don’t think of it as a sombre history lesson – this year grab some tickets for the red double decker open-top City Sightseeing bus and take the kids on a fun adventure that also lets them learn about the significance behind Freedom Day. City Sightseeing Johannesburg & Soweto run an unforgettable tour through the Johannesburg CBD that stops at all the top attrac-

tions, such as Gandhi Square, the Roof of Africa on the 50th floor at the Carlton Centre, the James Hall Transport Museum, the Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City, the Mining District, the World of Beer, Newtown Precinct, Origins Centre at Wits, Braamfontein and Constitution Hill. The Soweto Tour extension to the existing Red City Tour offers a personal, in-depth and unforgettable tour of Soweto’s hot spots and is the perfect way to experience Johannesburg’s largest and most vibrant township. Soweto is home to thousands of South Africans and the site of some of the most iconic events in our history, so tour goers must be prepared for a fascinating look into kasi living and the history of South Africa’s freedom struggle.

“TWO NOTABLE STOPS ON THE RED CITY TOUR THAT ARE RELEVANT TO FREEDOM DAY” Two notable stops on the Red City Tour that are relevant to Freedom Day and which provide a sense of understanding of the struggle to overcome apartheid, are the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. The Apartheid Museum is a worldclass facility with mesmerising and interactive displays that includes lots of video and film footage and it is set within a remarkable building - it is a celebration of the human spirit for overcoming adversary. This is the perfect place to take the kids - walk through and explain the displays to them and witness the efforts of those involved in the anti-apartheid struggle. After exploring the museum you can then stop and enjoy a coffee, cool drink or milkshake at the

coffee shop and enjoy some retail therapy at the curio shop. Constitution Hill is an important, interesting and symbolic place. Johannesburg boasts a large number of heritage sites, but leading these is Constitution Hill which comprises a series of museums located in former prisons, including the Old Fort, the notorious No 4 Prison and the Women’s Jail. The hillside is also home to the Constitutional Court South Africa’s highest court (the art collection housed within the court building is also a must-see, featuring conventional art pieces, as well as objects of arts and crafts that are incorporated into the building itself).

“A GUIDED TOUR OF CONSTITUTION HILL IS WELL WORTH EXPERIENCING” Until the end of April, Constitution Hill has reduced their tour fees from R50 to R20 so make sure to hop off at Stop 12. A guided tour of Constitution Hill is well worth experiencing as you get to also hear the stories behind the sites. The Red City Tour operates on a Hop-On, Hop-Off basis, which means you can choose to climb off the bus at any of the stops along the route and then get back on to a later bus when you are ready. Tailor made sightseeing which is safe, reliable, affordable, informative and fun – accompanied by the onboard commentary which explains the story behind the sites and is available in 16 different languages – including a fun kid’s channel. Arrive on the world class Gautrain and connect to the City Sightseeing

bus at the Gautrain Park Station to enjoy a safe, fun and unique tour of Joburg. Alternatively parking is available on the roof of the new Park Station and at Gold Reef City. The City Sightseeing tours offer a unique perspective and you can experience an entirely different side to the city of Johannesburg – memorable sightseeing that the entire family will love. Find all the specials, times and tour options online and best yet – because City Sightseeing are committed to being a friend to your pocket - you can also book further discounted tickets online!

“2 KIDS FREE ON WEEKENDS, PUBLIC AND SCHOOL HOLIDAYS” From 6 May until the end of October City Sightseeing will be running their Kids Special where on weekends, public and school holidays, two kids under the age of 18 can travel for free on the bus with any paying adult. THE DEETS: Buy discounted tickets and find detailed information on the City Sightseeing Joburg and Soweto tour options, the times and stops along the route visit the website on www.citysightseeing.co.za or contact 0861 733 287.

HELLO JOBURGS BEST SOCiAL HANGOUTS A Selection of Jozi’s Top Cocktail Bars & Pubs

I

t’s been a long day and you need to wind down. Maybe you’re clubbing days are long gone and you’re not ready to drink tea on the stoep with gran. Never fear, we are here. Below we list 5 of our top bars in Johannesburg.

3)

ISLAND BAR AT THE SOUTHERN SUN HYDE PARK SANDTON

We already know that views and height are a magical ingredient when it comes to after hour drinks at sunset or any time for that matter. The panoramic view from the top is more than enough to take the edge off after a mad day or week. Drinks are a little bit on the expensive side but the view makes up for it.

THE DEETS: 123 Rivonia Road, Sandton www.hisandton.co.za 011 282 0000

4) RADIUM BEER HALL

6) KATZY’S AT THE GRILLHOUSE

The oldest surviving bar and grill in Johannesburg, The Radium Beer Hall is said to have once been a shebeen. True or not, it is most certainly steeped in historic ambience. It’s framed newspaper headlines that dot the walls, faded pictures of pre-war soccer teams and shots of jazzmen who have graced it’s stage remind you of the quirkiness, strangeness and uniqueness that is this city. Oh and the drinks are pretty cheap.

You might remember it from you party days but Katzy’s has had a serious make-over in the last five years – in case you missed it. It has kind of grown up with us if you like. Now that’s emotional I know but it’s a cool time out too from a long day or week at the office.A classy music venue where you can sink into one of their large leather couches and enjoy an evening of good music, whiskey and fine cigars. They also serve a large variety of cocktails, different whiskeys, cognacs and bourbons. Be sure to dress up for the occasion!

Check it out here www.mapungubwehotel.co.za. But we prefer to fast track to the bar. 2) THE GRIFFIN The Craft Beer Gastrobpub has certainly earned its stripes since making camp on top of Trabella’s (one of our all time favourite pizza spots) Whether it’s chilled afternoon drinks on the deck after work or a bit of that old thumping night life you hanker after later on in the evening, this is your spot. We are particularly fond of the cosmos. It is also one of the few places that serves Haute Cabriere Chardonnay Pinot Noir by the glass. Hallelujah. There really is no need to sell this place. With its crystal blue pool, lounge chairs and attentive staff, afternoon drinks watching the sun set over Joburg isn’t too shabby. You can’t go wrong with a strawberry daiquiri here. You can also retreat to the Whisky and Cigar Bar to up the ante.

TOYOTA STEPS UP THE FUN FACTOR FOR ITS ALL-NEW CITY CAR

LAND ROVER SA SAYS ‘NINE’ TO ITS GERMAN SUV RIVALS

The New Aygo Was Revealed Last Month At The Geneva Motor Show

The Landrover Evoque is First To Market With 9-Speeds Automatic

T

he new Aygo, revealed last month at the Geneva Motor Show, is another example of Toyota’s commitment to build ever-better cars that catch the eye and are genuinely fun to drive. A distinctive and characterful design – dubbed “J-Playful” in reference to Japan’s hip youth culture – and a wealth of customisation options show how Toyota has made fun a key element in crafting its new city car.

At the same time new Aygo builds on the qualities that made the original such a success throughout its lifetime, keeping the car compact, nimble and reliable, with genuinely low running costs. The latter are supported by revision to its awardwinning three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine to secure class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Full details of the South African model range and prices will be announced nearer the on-sale date later this year. www.toyota.co.za

THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ S 65 AMG The Only High-Performance 12 Cylinder Automobile From a German Premium Manufacturer

T

welve cylinders, twin-turbocharging, 463 kW (630 hp) of output and 1000 newton metres of torque – the new S 65 AMG sets new standards as the most powerful vehicle in its segment of the market. Exceptional performance and outstanding dynamism – these are the hallmarks of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine. With its reduced fuel consumption and compliance with the EU 6 exhaust emissions standard, the new V12 saloon is fit for the future.

Two innovations, the head-up display and the touchpad, represent further enhancements in terms of comfort and safety. The S 65 AMG is the only highperformance 12-cylinder automobile from a German premium manufacturer – and it is a car with a pedigree: the first generation of the S 65 AMG was launched in 2003, with the second generation being produced from 2006 until 2013. www.mercedes-benz.com

The AMG sports suspension based on Magic Body Control comes as standard with Road Surface Scan, the world’s first suspension with eyes. It goes without saying that the S 65 AMG offers supreme exclusivity in design and equipment specification.

Hello Johannesburg April 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

I

n a South African first, the MY14 Evoque marks the local debut of the ZF 9HP transmission – a groundbreaking design which sets new standards. It is fitting therefore that the Evoque, an innovative and class-leading vehicle that set new standards when introduced late in 2011, should be part of this trend. Compared to previous 6-speed automatic transmissions for fronttransverse installations, ZF’s 9HP cuts fuel consumption and consequently also CO2 emissions. The technical basis for the great efficiency of the 9HP is the very high transmission spread – and yet particularly small gear steps thanks to the nine ratios. This not only enhances ride comfort but also makes sure that the engine always runs in the most efficient speed range. A revolutionary transmission concept uses four individual gearsets and six shifting elements. This required some very innovative packaging and the gearsets are not stacked one behind the other on a longitudinal axis but are ‘nested in’. This concept was supplemented by using hydraulicallyoperated constant-mesh elements:

They can be integrated without major impact on the transmission length and feature a high level of efficiency. Remarkably, it is just 6 mm longer but 7.5 kilograms lighter than the six speed transmission it replaces. A torque converter is used as the standard starting element in the 9HP. A multi-level torsion damping system minimizes hydraulic losses by quickly closing the torque converter. With its direct drive it reduces fuel consumption and enhances comfort as well as driving dynamics. Advanced software and extensive testing has reduced shift and response times below the threshold of human perception. Direct multiple gearshifts are also possible with the 9HP and give the automatic transmission its sporty character: shift points and shift dynamics can be highly variable depending on conditions and driving style. It has also been designed with an eye on the future; and can cope with torque outputs of up to 480Nm, is start-stop capable and can be hybridized. With the torque converter replaced by an electric motor it easily works as a parallel hybrid. www.jaguarlandrover.com 012 450 4000

that Meetings African 2014 delivered a quality business platform for both buyers and exhibitors. “There were, at 10 169, 2 000 more meetings requested through the Meetings Africa electronic diary system, and all exhibitor and buyer delegates report brisk business from the tradeshow floor.”

“NO DOUBT THAT MEETINGS AFRICAN 2014 DELIVERED A QUALITY BUSINESS PLATFORM FOR BOTH BUYERS AND EXHIBITORS” Meetings Africa’s theme this year

was Advancing Africa Together. This was the first year that Meetings Africa took a decisive step to being a pan-African business event tradeshow, and exhibitor representation from the continent gives every indication that wide African representation will become a reality in the medium term, Mr Nzima added.

“IT’S OUR COMMITMENT, IN MEETINGS AFRICA, TO CONTINUE PROVIDING THE INDUSTRY A PLATFORM FOR CONTINUED GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS” In 1994, the first year of our democracy, South Africa hosted 12 international association conferences, in other words, those conferences that had met the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) ranking criteria. Those 12 conferences brought a total of 5 950 people to our shores. By 2012, we had grown that number to 97 ICCA-recognised meetings, which attracted 52 587 delegates to the country, injecting an estimated R663 million into the South African economy. “It’s our commitment, in Meetings Africa, to continue providing the industry a platform for continued global competitiveness and for ongoing growth. We look forward to Meetings Africa 2015 when the tradeshow celebrates its tenth anniversary by giving the sector; and the regional and international market an opportunity to come and do business with an even greater contingent of focussed and service-driven African exhibitors.” THE DEETS: Meetings Africa 2015 will be held at The Sandton Convention Centre from 23 to 25 February 2015. www.meetingsafrica.co.za 011 895 3000
