t’s April which means hello Easter holidays and hello sweet chocolate dreams - all courtesy of this month’s issue of Hello Joburg.

The Jozi Chocolate Scene on page 10 is heady with cocoa, chocolate and champagne at the best of times but this month even more so as the Easter bunny rolls into town. We made a visit to some of the city’s most delectable chocolatier spots if you’re looking for something really special to get your taste buds going. Then for some quick gifting this month for friends and family, we picked out a few winners for the impending Cocoa Craze should you wish to peruse, check out page 12. We know we’re on a chocolate march but believe it or not, roasted and ground cacao seeds can be pretty good for you too. Don’t listen to the naysayers too closely. We did some research on The Benefits of Chocolate on page 29, just in case you disappear into a guilty rabbit hole. #Don’tDoIt. If all this chocolate talk has you game for something else, then how about something a little spicier? This month we bring you Bargain Buys and All Things Spice at The Oriental Plaza on page 16, who serve up some of the best samosas we have ever eaten. Alternatively, check out our Restaurant of the Month, La Parada on page 24. For those cooking at home this month, we’ve got Wines for Your Plate and Your Glass on page 32, with our selection of top drops that double up as great cooking wines. April is also going to be an exciting month for thespian lovers everywhere as the classic show Chicago takes to the stage once again with its motley crew of shady characters. Find out about All That Jazz at The Teatro this month on page 44. Easily one of the most successful international musical hits of all time, it would be criminal to miss it. For more awesome activities in the City of Gold, visit www. hellojoburg.co.za or follow @HelloJoburgMag on your favourite social media platform. Happy Easter and happy holidays people of Jozi!

Some of us will remember her as the villainous refugee Kamina from Mzansi Magic’s The Queen. Michelle Mosalakae has had a very busy acting career since her debut role in Isibaya in 2017. She has had to learn how to balance her busy schedule on set while representing Revlon with their #liveboldbrigade beauty campaign in 2018. If you are wondering how she does it, here’s a breakdown of how she runs the city in 24 hours: Q @mosalakaem D @MosalakaeM E @michellemosalakae 07h00 I wake up, do a quick Pilates session. I then pray and thank God for a new day. After that it’s time to freshen up and watch the news. 08h30 Hit the gym for HIIT. I love doing sprints or intensive cardio as well as weight lifting, I believe in lifting heavy, I always want to feel strong and physically capable to do anything. 9h00 Shower and then check my emails and respond to any messages. I then go through my schedule for the day with my momager. 10h00 I’m on the road attending various different meetings and castings with a wide variety of people in the industry. I travel quite a lot between cities in a day. 13h00   I always seem to be shooting something whether it’s a campaign,TV show, or interview, so I’ll also be on set for a few hours of my day with my momager right by my side making sure everything is running smoothly.  18h00 I prepare for the following day as well as going through any scripts or sides I need to learn. I also catch up on Instagram and Twitter and I love watching fun and interesting YouTube channels like BAFTA Guru and Backstage. 20h30 Preparing my healthy meals for the next day. I then prepare myself for bed and give myself a good 30-45 minutes for my skincare routine.  22h00 It’s time for bed, fresh face, warm and snuggly pyjamas on and I’m ready to dream up a storm! Star-studded LUXURY

The largest supercar showroom in Africa has opened its doors promising premium luxury with its supercar line-up.

Daytona Melrose Arch

D

aytona, South Africa’s premium luxury and supercar supplier and sole importers in Africa for Aston Martin, McLaren and Pagani and in sub-Sahara Africa for Rolls-Royce, officially launched its new 8000sqm state-of-theart dealership in Melrose Arch on Sunday 10 March 2019. Whilst a Sunday may seem like an unusual day to host such an auspicious occasion, this was done in conjunction with their annual Supercar Sunday at the shopping precinct; attracting almost 100 Supercars for visitors, customers and car enthusiasts to enjoy. Since 2005, Daytona has gone from strength to strength and grown with an esteemed customer base. With the mentality that brands of distinction deserve a distinctive space, a showroom that seamlessly blends a contemporary aesthetic with an industrial style was built. The new state-of-the-art showroom ensures that visitors experience the highest level of comfort and service in a space that is inviting to enter. State-ofthe-art sound systems and video walls add unique energy to the space and the addition of The Melrose Gallery quarterly art exhibition cements the lifestyle appeal of the space. Equipped with a restaurant and coffee bar operated by NAKED (famous for their 100% Arabia coffee bean blends), customer lounges and high-tech technology; the showroom is a space that visitors can utilise for business meetings, lunch dates and coffee stops. A space that brings luxury together in one unique environment.

The showroom is equipped with a 4000sqm advanced workshop and parts facility and is open seven days a week with car detailing being offered on site by BigFoot Car Detailers. Customers can now book their vehicles in for various techniques including paint correction (removal of paint defects and scratches), Swissvax paint protection detail, dry ice blasting/cleaning, Colourlock leather repair & leather restoration, custom vinyl and vehicle colour change wraps, vehicle interior detailing, Gyeon Quartz paint protective coatings and paint protection film applications. “The idea for this unique concept sparked over five years ago, with groundbreaking in January 2017. To see the showroom complete and operational is a dream come true. We are by no means at the end of our journey to open Africa’s largest car retail space, but the fact that doors are open and that my vision is finally a reality – is beyond humbling. Currently Pagani, McLaren and Daytona Pre-Owned are fully operational.”– Justin Divaris, CEO of Daytona. “Aston Martin will be ready to move towards the end of June; beginning of July and Rolls-Royce a few months later. When that happens, we will

officially be one of Africa’s largest, most luxurious car dealerships” - said Divaris. If luxury automobiles and decked out supercars get you all revved up, then we suggest you pop into Daytona Melrose Arch to peruse this ultramodern one of a kind showroom of dreams. 1Whiteley Road, Melrose m 011 301 7000 1 www.daytona.co.za

Ash and Jess opened Meraki Aesthetic and Beauty Studio in April 2017. Ashleigh had a salon from home and so did Jess and so, they decided to join forces and expand and grow their passion and knowledge in the beauty industry. We decided to pop in for a visit to find out more. K www.merakistudiojhb.com  Q @meraki_studio_jhb How long have you been in the beauty industry? We have both been in the beauty industry for over 15 years both having owned our own salons previously.   Take us through your journey as beauty therapists.   Jess qualified as a beauty therapist and worked for a year before buying the salon she worked in. Owning and managing a salon was challenging and she decided she wanted to work from home. Ash qualified and then worked for a salon. She then decided she wanted to work for herself where she ran a successful beauty business for over 14 years Can you share some of your career highlights with us? Our biggest highlight is opening Meraki together. We have had challenges but with our great staff and amazing supportive clients we are super grateful to do this every day. What treatments are offered at Meraki? Generally, we do everything from nails, pedi, green peels, spray tans, slimming, lashes, dermaplanning, permanent makeup, microneedling and microblading. What's the one question women ask you frequently about skin issues? The one question every woman asks is "can you get rid of my pigmentation?". We work with Dr schrammek’s green peel which we are getting fantastic results with. What treatment and/or product are you loving at the moment and why? Ash is super passionate about microblading and permanent makeup, because she loves the transformation and the look on the clients face when they see the results. Jess’s favourite treatment is a combo of the dermaplanning and schrammek green peel. WIN WIN WIN!! Meraki Studio will be giving away a gel mani and pedi with a glass of bubbles for you and your bestie valued at R850. Visit www.hellojoburg.co.za to enter. CHOCOLATE SCENE No one makes it like we do

There’s just something about chocolate that makes most people cocoa. Maybe it’s the combination of sweet notes contrasted by that slightly bitter yet oh-so-rich flavour or, maybe, it’s that heavenly endorphin boost it provides. Either way, we just can’t get enough. So, this month we’re exploring our local scene.

az Watson is the brainchild and designer behind the KiiRA brand. As a native South African and a third-generation gemologist, Taz is as passionate about her homeland as she is about gemstones and jewellery. “Gemology is in my blood and I was raised in the industry…I could name my coloured gemstones before I could tell the time” she says. Taz envisions the brand as a celebration of Africa’s natural beauty, diversity and the potential that exists within the land and its people. Taz not only values the importance of providing beautiful, authentic and genuine jewellery but deeply cherishes the need for ethical business practices and sustainability. It is this ethos that is carried through every aspect of the KiiRA brand. Each piece of jewellery celebrates a unique part of Africa through striking designs that are brought to life by alluring gemstones and diamonds sourced from the continent’s abundant underground treasure chests. All KiiRA jewellery is handcrafted in South Africa and uses ethically sourced African gemstones and conflict-free diamonds. Each component of the brand is carefully selected to provide exquisite, quality products that are authentically African, sustainable and socially uplifting. KiirA’s goal is to provide jewellery that is not only beautiful in its detailing but is also ‘feelgood’ and responsible in its creation. “Beyond the world of gems and jewellery, conservation and community upliftment are close to my heart. KiiRA is my way of combining my passion and compassion. I want to share something beautiful and precious with the world in an authentic, ethical and sustainable way” - Taz Watson

BARGAINS, BUYS AND ALL THINGS SPICE

AT THE ORIENTAL PLAZA The Oriental Plaza or the Plaza as it has been dubbed over the years is synonymous with value bargain buys, a seamless mix of Eastern and Western culture and arguably some of the country’s most sought-after Samosas

For decades the Indian tradesman – and women – have offered real bargains on pretty much any of their wares be it electronics or houseware, exotic Indian herbs, spices and cosmetics. Their real speciality though has always been textiles and clothing including shoes, jewellery and apparels. Prices are not fixed, and well-intentioned bartering and haggling makes for a unique retail experience for all those who visit.

16

The Plaza’s history is rich and rooted in the passion and determination of the traders themselves and their loyal customers. Born in the midst of political turmoil, today’s buzzing plaza tells the story of a group of tenacious Indian traders who were kicked out of Vrededorp and Fietas during apartheid, Hello Joburg • April 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

after the group areas act. As a result of the eviction the white governing regime built the plaza and forced these traders to move their businesses to the plaza. Today the plaza is owned by the shop owners themselves – forming a close-knit community of 320 stores dedicated to best serving their customers and upholding the quality that has come to be expected. The Plaza’s buzzing atmosphere makes it ideal for a casual and relaxed morning meander from store to store with friends and family as the unique contents of each store spills out onto the sidewalks and the remarkable variety of magnificent fabrics stacked around the doors draws you in. The plaza is also renowned for being a destination spot for niche products such as formal bridal-wear, luggage, crockery, electronics and Eastern wear where competitive and healthy bargaining is often the order of the day – especially for those in search of something very specific.

Over the years, the mall has become home to high fashion boutique style stores and has evolved into a family orientated destination with kiddies’ rides and target activities hosted over certain seasons such as Easter and Christmas. Today the Oriental Plaza with its unique open-air atmosphere not only attracts people from Gauteng and surrounding areas but also visitors from all over the continent.  Of course, all that shopping works up an appetite so it would be remiss of us to not mention World of Samosas and the Golden Peacock restaurant. Various snack stores are also available as you explore the wide variety of retail outlets. So, if you’ve never been to this vibrant spot or haven’t visited in a while, treat yourself and your senses to an outing that is hard to beat. 38-60 Lillian Ngoyi Street, Fordsburg m 011 838 6752 1 www.orientalplaza.co.za

Chocolate

For many, chocolate is the main culprit when it comes to migraines, acne and obesity. This is not necessarily based on facts, though. On the contrary, chocolate might even be good for you! Healthy heart According to myvmc.com, there is evidence that suggests that chocolate plays a role in the performance of your endothelium, the tissue layer that lines your arteries. Apparently, consuming chocolate increases the amount of nitric oxide which causes arteries to expand and facilitate blood flow. This also has a positive impact on your cardiovascular health. Flavanol, one of the polyphenols found in cocoa, stimulates nitric acid secretion, which then widens the arteries. Nitric oxide also has antiplatelet effects, which means it protects against the formation of blood clots. There is also evidence that shows that chocolate consumption can reduce blood pressure and that moderate consumption of dark chocolate could reduce the risk of coronary problems. Something that we found fascinating was the conclusion from a Norwegian study which suggests that chocolate consumption can even improve insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of diabetes. While evidence regarding chocolate’s effect on cancer is still somewhat contradictory, there

Sweet beauty As we very well know, nutritional intake has a huge effect on our skin. It also has an effect on our skin’s photoprotection (protection from light). Dietary antioxidants like flavanol in cocoa might have a photoprotective effect on your skin by reducing the skin cells’ sensitivity to UV exposure. We also know that sugar has a negative effect on our skin. So, what about chocolate? According to Emma Hobson from the International Derman Institute and Dermalogica, dark chocolate is the way to go. Why? Dark chocolate contains more zinc, which is a crucial component in the healing process for your skin. It also contains 50% less sugar, which is great because sugar hardens skin proteins, causing premature ageing. The large number of cocoa polyphenols, like flavanol, are terrific antioxidants which in turn have numerous benefiting effects. According to overstock.com antioxidants calm inflammation, helps to firm and plump your skin and make you appear younger while helping with the treatment of scar tissue and the reparation of sun-damaged skin. Dark chocolate prevents the breakdown of collagen, which is important for making your skin look younger. It is also rich in Vitamins A, B1, C, D and E, as well as iron and calcium. Rather go for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. Try Lindt’s LES GRANDES Dark Hazelnut, Swiss Classic Surfin or their EXCELLENCE range. Woolworths also has organic dark chocolate on their shelves which is definitely worth a try. You’ll also find DV Chocolate on their shelves - deliciously pure, dark chocolate. Nova is an absolute niche with the most beautiful packaging! Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… LUPA OSTERIA

I

don’t know about you, but when temperatures start to drop, all I can think about are delicious, carby foods. Y’know – pasta, pizza, all that jazz! I don’t often treat myself to Italian food, but when I do, it better be good. After recently dining at Lupa Osteria in Hillcrest, Durban, I simply couldn’t resist trying out Joburg's newest branch in Fourways. Give up carbs? Over my bread body! Tucked away in Design Quarter, you wouldn’t expect the restaurant to have the ambience of a neighbourhood Osteria, but it sure does. Lots of exposed brick, blonde and almond tables with no formal dressing, white metal chairs and playful contemporary touches make it a warm, inviting space – one that passers-by inquisitively peer into. Browsing the menu took quite a while – it’s a tough life when everything looks so good (#foodiesproblems!). I was lunching with one of my besties, so we decided to each order a Lupatini, shaken with Absolut vodka, rum, cranberry juice and fresh lime. The cocktails were excellent – I may have just drunk mine a little too fast (it was just so delish!). Before our meal, we were contemplating whether to have starters and mains or mains and dessert and eventually decided on the latter. I regret not choosing the former, as it takes a lot for a dessert to impress me and the one, we chose, unfortunately, didn’t blow us away – but more about that in a bit. For mains, we went the traditional route. I ordered the Spago pizza topped with bacon, avocado and feta, and my friend opted for the highly recommended Penne Alfredo with ham, parmesan, mushrooms and cream. The pizza looked delicious and after tucking in, I can confirm that it indeed was! The pasta, which I was lucky enough to have a few mouthfuls of, was the star of the show though. The portion was huge, which meant my friend and I both took home a great dinner and post-dinner snack (naughty us!). After being taken by surprise with mighty generous main meal portions, we decided to share a dessert. We went for the Cremino al Cioccoloto – Nutella crème brûlée, smashed Amaretti biscuits, salted caramel gelato and Italian meringue. While it sounded amazing, it was just way too sweet for me, which was really a pity as I’m obsessed with Nutella and anything salted caramel. However, my friend, who has a seriously sweet tooth, said the dessert rocked her world. So if you’re a sucker for the sweet stuff, give it a try! In addition to cocktails that disappeared too fast to be socially acceptable and portion sizes beyond compare, the service was top-notch. Our waitress knew all the intricacies of the menu and the manager was checking up on all the tables. Overall, Lupa Osteria Design Quarter gets a thumbs-up from me. It’s not as popular and perpetually busy as its sisters (so don’t go expecting too much of a vibe), but it is an affordable Italian eatery that serves up simple pizza and pasta done extremely well – just like an Osteria should.

chef OF THE MONTH

CRONJE

Ever wondered what it’s like to be transported to an escapist fantasy world that combines a restaurant with ‘future theatre’? Chef Jacques Cronje, Group Executive Chef of the Milk & Honey Group SA, talks to us about what it’s like heading up the kitchen at the spanking new underground avant-garde wonderland that is Alice & Fifth.

28

Did you go to culinary school? I studied at Food and Beverage Institute (FBI) in Bloemfontein where I obtained an Advanced Diploma in Culinary Art, Pastry and Kitchen Management. At FBI, we were trained by chefs who’d been part of the South African team during their careers – think Nico van der Walt, Lesley Jacobs and Kevin Gericke. These are some of the best chefs in the industry and helped shaped me into the chef I am today. Hello Joburg • April 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

What kind of food do you offer at Alice & Fifth? I started working for the Milk & Honey Group SA in February last year. Since then, one of the projects I’ve worked on is the menu development at Alice & Fifth. The design of the menu was outsourced, but I gave input and was involved from start to finish. The luxury-dining establishment boasts a steakhouse feel and a South African menu with a chef ’s twist. My favourite dish on the menu is hands-down the oxtail with steamy herb dumpling. I just love how all the elements come together in this dish! How involved are you in the beverage component of Alice & Fifth? I helped design the cocktail menu to ensure that our cocktails complement the dishes on offer. At the moment, I’m also working on sharpening my wine-pairing skills by doing some training. Pairing a perfectly executed

dish with a bottle of fine wine makes all the difference when experiencing flavours. How do you test the quality of your ingredients? I ensure that I only use the best quality ingredients by simply finding out where they come from. I have a very close working relationship with all of my suppliers and am constantly doing site visits and researching new suppliers. I also feel and smell all my freshly delivered goods to make sure they’re good enough to use. When are you happiest at work? When it’s super-busy – that adrenaline rush is what keeps me going – or when my team works well together and we pull off a superb dinner service. Sandton Sun, corner of Alice Lane & 5th Street, Sandton m 010 020 7382 1 www.aliceandfifth.co.za

Words Candice May Image Supplied

Why did you decide to become a chef ? I grew up in Limpopo where I spent a lot of time in the kitchen helping my grandmother bake all sorts of yummy treats. That is where my love for food and passion for cooking began. In high school, I took hospitality as a subject and was lucky enough to travel to Thailand and the UAE to attend cooking classes. After finishing school, it was a nobrainer – I wanted to become a chef.

t’s not every day that you get to linger alongside luxury of this kind, which makes Naked @ Daytona so unique and special.

Naked Coffee is not new to Jozi, with a presence in Kramerville, Morningside and Sandton. The latest shop has returned home to Melrose Arch and stands between a collection of Aston Martins, McLarens and Rolls-Royces at Daytona. It’s quite an experience walking into Daytona which Naked Coffee shares a space with; a lavish showroom surrounded by the smell of aromatic coffee that welcomes you with a seductive lure to sit down between the shiny supercars. You’ll soon come to the realisation that it’s the perfect, bespoke, inspirational space - that’s decked out with Paul Blomkamp’s work hanging on the walls - to work, get creative and meet for some incredible food and out of this world coffee that you just have to try for yourself. Their regular travels add interesting ideas and flavours to the menu. Naked @ Daytona currently boasts an all-day breakfast menu, with an exciting lunch menu to be launched in April. The breakfast menu is the perfect fit for businessmen who like to indulge in cars, coffee and banana bread, but also for the health-conscious who prefer gluten-free options and acai bowls. The smashed avo with pistachio and dukkah crumble is a big hit and if you’re keen on something other than coffee (which is weird when you’re at Naked, just sayin’), you’ve got to try their ginger Bundaberg. alking into Jasmine Fusion at The Marc, its old, refurbished chairs and high ceilings will most likely catch your eye. It’s simple, yet elegant.

Coming from many years in hospitality, including owning a Fishmonger Restaurant, opening the only Halaal fine dining restaurant in Johannesburg was quite exciting. It’s a unique restaurant with a menu that changes every fortnight and its fusion cuisine not only caters to the Muslim community, but to anyone looking for a new fine dining experience. From his travels, owner and chef Naadir developed recipes with influences from countries like Malaysia, Marocco and Singapore. Their prawns, which is their current bestseller, are served with a coconut base, risotto rice and some Indian spices. Another favourite is their Lobster Thermidor, one of the Fishmonger recipes they just couldn’t leave out. The Orchid Street Crab is another very interesting option among the entrée menu’s eight to ten dishes, with a Singaporean influence. They also serve a traditional Maroccan Tagine which is made from a recipe Naadir found in Marrakesh. It’s cooked for an hour and a half and is sold out every day. They bring in the fusion element to this dish by serving it with Indian naan. You might struggle to decide on dessert. From Lemongrass Coconut, which is a lemongrass jelly with coconut cheesecake, to their famous Cannoli - Italian pasta (which can double up as lasagne if you cook it differently) with a delicious ricotta cheese filling. It’s as authentically Italian as one can get. Jasmine Fusion is open for lunch and dinner. 29 Rivonia Rd, Sandown, Sandton m 010 001 3881 Q @jasminefusion

MALT IN YOUR MOUTH

Angelo Kellaris: Malt Barrel & Fire Synonymous with whisky, beer and signature shakes, this modern gastropub showcases malts made for everyone.

G

rowing up Greek, in his dad’s coffee shop, Angelo was raised ringing up the till and dabbling in the deli from his teenage years; before officially learning the trade whilst working on his marketing degree. He opened his first coffee shop when he was just 21, before opening News Café in Menlyn. The experience was an eye-opener, and looking to broaden his horizons, he pursued his passion for finer dining with Rhapsody’s Menlyn in 2006. With an appetite for adventure and a penchant for projects, Angelo decided to diversify even further, with a sports bar at Loftus Versfeld. Having almost done it all, he decided to incorporate his experience, and open something centred around whisky and beer; “as in malt,” his developer retorted and the name stuck. With great coffee, good food and artisanal handcrafted cocktails, Malt is an expression of Angelo’s gastronomic journey over the last two decades. Despite the incomparable beverage selection, Angelo believes that while you can get a drink anywhere, good food is far more sought after and is at the heart of his business. He’s come a long way from the pancakes he made as a young boy, splashing oil across the kitchen and even though he prefers developing recipes, which his team executes and perfects, he has his finger on the pulse when it comes to international inspiration. He is passionate about research and amalgamating ideas inspired by chefs he admires and respects. Angelo’s secret to success is the unparalleled quality he offers, from his service to his ingredients, consistency is key and he never loses focus on what is happening in the kitchen. To Angelo, atmosphere is everything and Malt is exceptionally inviting, with warm wooden and copper finishes accentuated with ambient lighting. Angelo believes that a place should make you feel something when you walk in; and when you walk into Malt, you’ll feel right at home. WINES FOR YOUR PLATE AND YOUR GLASS Top drops that double up as great cooking wines

“I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put some in the food.” For tasty food, you should only cook with wine that you’d drink in the first place. Whether you want to open a bottle especially for that perfect pasta sauce or need a way to make sure you don’t waste what’s left after drinking a glass or two, these ‘cooking wine’ inspired pasta dishes are a fabulous way to enjoy a top drop on your plate as well as in your hand.

Heaven on Earth Natural Sweet Wine NV (Vredendal) The famous Heaven on Earth by Stellar Winery is actually an enjoyable dessert wine on its own but adds a real burst of flavour to pasta dishes too. Light gold in colour with a very fragrant nose that’s reminiscent of roses, apricots and pine trees on a hot windless day, this wine is light in the mouth and has delicate flavours of the roses and apricots held together by wisps of Rooibos, ending with pine nuts. It has a good acidity that prevents a cloying sweetness and allows a clean finish. Make pasta a heavenly meal by adding this wine to classic dishes like mushroom-based pasta, vegetable lasagne and spaghetti carbonara. It also goes well with cheese-based and green pesto sauces. Before dinner, you can serve this wine chilled as an aperitif and after dinner, poured over ice cream or served with a cheese platter. R780 a bottle from www.bottleshop.co.za

Zonnebloem Merlot 2014 (Stellenbosch) 

Some people cook with wine because they know that as an acidic ingredient it makes magic out of marinades and sauces as the alcohol evaporates and the flavour lingers. Boiling down or simmering a dish with wine concentrates the flavours to really showcase the other ingredients. Others cook with wine because they simply cannot drink the bottle on their own. How would that look? #DrunkChef. Whatever your reason, there is no doubt that a rich Bolognese pasta sauce needs a good, bold red while being cooked and then of course to accompany the meal. We think that the Zonnebloem Merlot is a firm favourite for the chef, the sauce and the guests. #everyonegetswine. An elegant medium-to-full-bodied wine with delicate red fruit like mulberries and well-integrated wood flavours, expect that smell you get when you open the cigar box as well as a trace of violets and chocolate. R88 a bottle from www.bottleshop.co.za

This gorgeous Pinot Grigio starts off fruity with golden apple and light peach aromas that are complemented with touches of stone fruit and floral notes. On the palate, flavours of nectarine and peach intermingle with honeysuckle opulence and fresh lime zest that perfectly offsets sweetness for a perfect balance of acid. Pinot Grigio pairs well with lighter foods that have delicate sauces blended with olive oil, fresh herbs and shellfish so add a splash to a classic Spaghetti Vongole dish and enjoy a chilled glass as you dig in. A LONG MARCH TO FREEDOM

36

or Mr Dali Tambo, son of Oliver Tambo, CEO of the National Heritage Project NPC and originator of the National Heritage Monument, the Long March to Freedom Exhibition holds much more than almost 100 bronzes and an estimated value of R100 Million. It holds history. It holds sentiment. And love. Love for his parents, Oliver and Adelaide Tambo, but also love for a country he clearly holds dear.

Mr Dali Tambo is currently busy working on a documentary about Oliver Tambo and in working on it, he says he has once again realised that his parents’ story is one of love and revolution. Their story formed part of a bigger one – a story of a country which saw its people turn at the very brink of catastrophe to forge a new future for its people by shaping a Constitution where the rights of every individual are protected and defended.

Mr Dali Tambo has devoted seven years to seeking funding and support for this project and exhibition that will remain at Maropeng for a period of six months having started in January 2019. The exhibition was previously located at the Fountains Valley Resort in the City of Tshwane and attracted hundreds of visitors there. Now located at a world heritage site, the National Lottery funded statues might even draw more attention. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site boasts over 400 tourism offerings and Maropeng and Sterkfontein are receiving over 30 000 visitors per year. It seems to be the perfect fit for the Long March to Freedom Exhibition, teaching South African learners and students, as well as local and international tourists more about South Africa’s heritage.

South Africa has experienced the ravages of slavery, colonialism and apartheid. With the exhibition, Maropeng seeks to tell the story of human frailty and human survival, in all its complexity and depth. Here, people can reflect on where we have come from, but also consider where we currently are and contemplate our future.

the exhibition also reflects the inter-connected nature of the human spirit. It represents the unquenchable human desire to be free and it showcases the struggle of individuals against the backdrop of a collective narrative which fought tirelessly against oppression. It tells the South African story of oppression to freedom; degradation to respect; enslavement to liberation. It speaks of a future filled with hope.

The exhibition is an ode to the veterans of the struggle who fought against Apartheid. It represents the journey of South African people like Oliver and Adelaide Tambo and Nelson and Winnie Madikizela Mandela, who fought for freedom and democracy. The struggle was not isolated; it relied on numerous contacts and connections from around the world, which is why

Winnie Madikizela Mandela and Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jnr’s bronze statues were recently unveiled at the site – be sure to make a day of it and take time to walk through these magnificent art pieces. You’ll be surprised at the emotions they provoke – the biggest of them all: Love for our country.

arts&culture AND ALL THAT JAZZ Chicago is back in town

Classic, sensual and sexy, award-winning Broadway and West End musical Chicago is back at Montecasino’s Teatro this month.

The multi-talented all-South African touring cast, band and crew have been on an international year-long tour that has taken them across the globe (winning much global acclaim) but finally bringing them back to home soil earlier this year ahead of the South African leg of the tour. Once they wrap up here, the show will head to Europe as the cast continue to fly the flag and wow global audiences with incredible local talent.

nothing quite like Chicago on stage. Originally staged in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2005 and again, owing to popular demand, in 2008 at Montecasino’s Teatro and Artscape, this show has been enjoyed by more than 210,000 theatre-goers in South Africa. After eleven years, this sensual, seductive smash hit musical returns to these venues bringing back some of South Africa’s most well known and loved faces too. Back for the show are leads Samantha Peo (Cabaret, West Side Story, Strictly Come Dancing) now in the role of Velma Kelly and Ilse Klink (Mamma Mia!, Show Boat, Isidingo) who plays Matron Mama Morton for the third South African season. Other local favourites include Craig Urbani (Sound of Music, Rock of Ages, Scandal) as devious lawyer, Billy Flynn, KJ Haupt (Rocky Horror, Carmen, Phantom of the Opera) as Mary Sunshine with Carmen Pretorius (Sound of Music, Jersey Boys, Lien se Lankstaanskoene) and Grant Towers (Funny Girl, Sound of Music, Avenue Q) joining the company in the principal roles of husband and wife, Roxie Hart and Amos Hart.

Chicago was first created by the legendary Broadway trio of John Kander (music), Fred Ebb (book/lyrics) and Bob Fosse (co-author, original director and choreographer) in 1975, and was based on a 1926 Broadway play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a journalist from the Chicago Tribune who had covered the sensational trials of two women, both of whom were accused of killing their lovers whilst under the influence of drink and jazz. Easily one of the most successful international musical hits of all time, an estimated 31 million people have seen the show, which has played over 32,500 performances worldwide. It would be criminal to miss it. For more information visit Computicket or the Montecasino website.

A

story well known and loved by South African audiences, Chicago tells the tale of a nightclub singer, a double-murderess and a smooth-talking lawyer that has captivated audiences worldwide since the 70s. A story of greed, murder, ambition and fame and with sensational dancing, a singalong soundtrack and sophisticated set, this show is a guaranteed winner for those wanting to indulge in some theatre this month. But if for some reason you have annoyed the missus lately, maybe let her cool down a bit before you book – some of the content is a little dark for cheating husbands and their annoying idiosyncrasies #justsaying.

Agatha Christie’s

THE MOUSETRAP H

ere at HJ we love a front seat to a classic show, so we made a point to see Agatha Christie’s murder mystery great, THE MOUSETRAP as it wrapped after a successful run at The Pieter Torien theatre last month. Set in the guest-house of newly married couple Mollie and Giles Ralston, all hell breaks loose when a ferocious storm traps a motley crew of guests inside Monkswell Manor and someone is murdered. One by one the suspicious characters reveal their disreputable pasts (classic “who-dunnit”) until at last, the unlikely murderer is revealed. By all accounts the show served as a great production, with fantastic costumes and stage design, we absolutely loved it - but as regular theatregoers it would be remiss not to offer a tiny bit of constructive commentary. #DontBeAHater We couldn’t help but notice a stack of Vogue Magazines alongside the sofa, front and centre in the guesthouse lounge. Nothing too out of the ordinary just yet as the first British Edition of Vogue landed in 1916 and the story is set in 1947. But what did suddenly trip us up from our late 40s day-dream was one of the characters reading said Vogue with an advert for a Motorola smart-phone on the back. Clearly a current version of the mag which albeit might seem pedantic, for someone engrossed in the story like us, such detail brings you straight back to just a seat at Montecasino. The devil is always in the detail isn’t it? Use it or lose it directors. Stay tuned for more arm chair reviews as we seat hop from one Jozi theatre to the next.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT explore your new favs

We’re almost done with the first quarter of 2019. Rather than fill this page with clichés it seems about time that we explore a whole new world of entertainment. This month, we’re looking at the content you probably don’t know you love yet. So, get ready to try a whole new way of relaxing during your downtime.

Avengers assemble! The final chapter in a long drawn out saga has arrived. Avengers: End Game, the final telling of the story that began way back when with the first Iron Man Movie, comes to a close this month. The movie is set to drop towards the end of the month and will see all our favourite superheroes come together to save the world one last time… maybe. If you’ve missed the Avengers train up until this point (HOW?!) now might be a good time to jump on. If you know how it ends the rest probably won’t matter.

Ani-WHAT?

Words by Sam Wright, Images Supplied

Ah, Netflix. A glorious invention that allows us to spend weekends in our pyjamas re-watching the entire show run of How I Met Your Mother. Or, you can explore the rest of the streaming service and try out a whole new genre of television. It’s called Anime and you might assume it is just “more kids cartoons”. You’d be wrong. Anime originates in Japan and is hand drawn and then computer animated artwork that is then used in movies and series. The stories are very real and very much for adults. If you’re interested to dive in, Netflix has a host of anime ready and waiting. Our suggestion, One Punch Man, it’s is a nice way to ease into the style of anime and the soap opera type stories you’re likely to encounter. Lesser Known Somebodies Simmi Areff is a stand-up comedian but is also the host of Lesser Known Somebodies, one of South Africa’s biggest podcasts. The podcast is available on Apple Music, Soundcloud and a host of other podcast services. In it, Simmi chats to remarkable South Africans and finds out what makes them just like you. This isn’t your usual interview series. For starters, Simmi injects his own personal discoveries and thoughts into the mix but also, he really allows you to feel like you’re sitting at a coffee table engaging with his guests.

Learn to play

Most people are terrified of picking up a controller and trying their hand at video games. Enter the new LEGO Movie 2 videogame. This is a great introduction to the world of video games. For starters, it will take you back to your childhood when the yellow brick was your favourite toy. You’ll also get to enjoy the slick humour we’ve come to expect from LEGO movies but bundled into a video game. The game is easy to play, highly entertaining and a great laugh. Better yet, rope in your significant other or child for some co-op fun. Video games and family bonding in one. You can grab the game on PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch - so there are no excuses. It’s time to get your game on. Hello Joburg • April 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

An uphill battle to keep Boks in SA with overseas scouting According to Bulls Director of Rugby Alan Zondagh, it might become increasingly difficult to keep Springbok players on the national team after the upcoming Rugby World Cup as some huge amounts are being offered to players at the moment to join clubs overseas. Zondagh believes that while franchises and SA Rugby will do everything they can to retain players it will be very difficult to argue against the financial incentives.

T

he Seychelles remains an untouched, pristine, masterpiece of nature and a sanctuary, not only for some of the rarest species of flora and fauna on the planet but, increasingly, for discerning travellers weary of the tired clichés and humdrum experiences served up by run-of-the mill-tourism destinations. It is here, amid the almost surreal natural beauty of the islands, their enviable lifestyle and the opportunities they offer for once-in-a-lifetime vacations, that the words ‘unique’ and ‘authentic’ reclaim their original - and proper - meaning.

tired spirits can be refreshed, and the stresses of the modern world washed away. Seychelles has been blessed with all of this…and more. Against the backdrop of its legendary island beauty, this is where Man’s timeless yearning for harmony folds seamlessly into reality and where there is always ample time and space to enjoy life the way Mother Nature intended – soulfully. In an overcrowded world that is, in so many cases, becoming more polluted by the day, Seychelles is fast gaining recognition for the enormous potential of its tourism industry. There are several excellent reasons for this awakening of interest and each of them points

to a unique treasure that Seychelles possesses, treasures that together place it head and shoulders above rival island destinations. Seychelles Tourism’s slogan, ‘The Seychelles Islands... another world’, is the embodiment of the concept that Seychelles remains one of the most otherworldly, environmentally-intact destinations on earth with only 160,000 visitors a year. Certainly, one of Seychelles’ greatest assets is the exotic diversity of its multitude of islands and the variety they offer to visitors wishing to take in a selection of islands during the course of their stay. Each isle has its individual geography and

day or honeymoon beneath swaying palms alongside silken waters fringed by the silver-soft sands of discreet island hideaways.

Today, Seychelles boasts a wide range of accommodation options ranging from the opulence of five-star resorts with their vast choice of amenities to the authentic - and affordable - charms of smaller local hotels, picturesque Creole guesthouses and self-catering, each occupying their own special niche and each a perfect stepping-stone for exploring the numerous wonders of the destination.

Seychelles has all this to offer and more but perhaps its most enduring attraction is the security it offers and its enviable pace of life amid the beauty, tranquillity and multi-racial harmony of the islands.

Among all of Seychelles’ islands, there are currently only 16 host hotels, several of which offer the most luxurious amenities and all of which possess their own natural charm. The islands of Bird and Denis located to the north of Mahé, Frégate to the west and Desroches and Alphonse to the south each offer diverse and unforgettable, get-away-from-it-all, experiences. Those fortunate enough to travel to the islands of the far south will be rewarded by the heartstopping beauty of Cosmoledo, Farquhar and the jewel in Seychelles’ crown, Aldabra, with its magnificent lagoon and teeming wildlife. An efficient network of inter-island ferry, plane and helicopter transfers will accommodate almost any itinerary affording the visitor the opportunity to explore and discover the unique features of each island. Equally, the wonderful variety of Seychelles’ flora & fauna with its high proportion of endemic species nurtured within one of nature’s last pristine sanctuaries makes it an exciting destination for naturalists, ornithologists and ecotourists alike.

International sport and recreational fishermen enthusiastically return to Seychelles’ waters that already boast several world records for Pacific Bonito and Dogtooth Tuna. The abundance of Wahoo, Bonito, Dorado and several species of Tuna make a day’s fishing trip an unforgettable experience, allowing you to savour the finest tasting fish on offer anywhere in the world. With so many islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, it is little wonder that another of Seychelles’ outstanding resources lies in the impressive diving opportunities it offers to experienced and novice divers alike. Myriad dive sites promise a marine extravaganza as diverse and vibrant as it is unique. Colourful reef fish, octopus, lobster and turtle flash in the shallows surrounding the inner islands, while more adventurous dives offshore include the ‘Ennerdale’ wreck and rocks that are the playground for larger groupers and stingrays. The dedicated and accredited diving centres of most hotels and island resorts offer everything from one-day introductory courses to international diving instructor certificates.

Chartering a yacht provides perhaps the most rewarding way of discovering the hidden treasures of the archipelago at one’s own pace and whim, cruising in cyclone-free waters and enjoying a dazzling array of inner islands with golden beaches fringed by warm, turquoise waters. Further afield, the virgin territories of the Amirantes and the Southern Island Groups offer unparalleled opportunities for big-game fishing, diving and island adventure amid turtles, mantas, dolphins and whales in places where few have gone before. BEYOND THE BOARDROOM

Business trips need no longer be strictly business thanks to the no-boundaries, blurring-work-andpersonal-life millennial generation. Africa’s economic hub is one of the top cities around the world where it’s ‘no work, all play’ with its urban revival and edgy street art that put a spin on the serious corporate high-rises of Sandton and surrounds. Joburg gets the nod for being both hip and happening in 2019 from us! We’ve rounded up our top leisure activities that promote its lifestyle offering. A day trip to Black Horse Brewery Great news, drinkers: Joburg craft-beer revolution shows no sign of slowing down. Just an hour’s drive from Joburg, Black Horse Brewery is a boundary-pushing brewery that’s brewing up some killer facilities as well. Perfectly positioned on a scenic road leading to the edge of the Magalies River in Magaliesburg, Black Horse Brewery is part of the Black Horse Estate and is co-located with a craft distillery and restaurant and offers accommodation and conference facilities. The brewery boasts a mash/lauter tun, a boil kettle and six 400-litre fermenters. Dig into one of the bucket-list burgers that are towering with toppings and wash it down with suds in the form of five tasters, pints, ‘tiny’ 300ml pints or two-litre ‘growlers’. 32 Zeekoeihoek Road, Magaliesburg m 082 453 5295 1 www.blackhorse.co.za

A power lunch at Truffles on the Park Need a discreet destination to eat while you discuss a deal? Looking to butter up your boss or impress a client? When there’s a business meeting on the menu, book a table at Truffles on the Park, a brand-new bistro in the popular Mushroom Farm Park - a mere stroll away from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and banking district. Upon stepping inside you’re greeted by the outside, with glazing apertures opening to reveal vistas across the park. But one can’t help but be drawn back inside by the abundance of botanical elements. The menu features an extensive selection of artisanal small plates, from dukkah-rubbed lamb cutlets and miso-glazed short rib to Atlantic salmon and charred octopus. To drink, you can choose between over 40 clear spirits to accent the floral notes of rose, elderflower, lavender, hibiscus and violet.

After-work drinks on Tsogo Sun hotel decks Choosing the right sundowner spots in Joburg can be a tricky task. You want to impress your co-workers, but you want to beat the post-work crowds. Some of the best straightforwardly superb spots are nestled within Tsogo Sun hotels at the pool decks. Settle in for an after-work session at Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park and sample cocktails in the splendour of an unforgettable Highveld sunset. The Friday Sundowner gets the weekend started with a line-up of top local DJs from 16h30. A more refined and relaxed atmosphere awaits you at the tranquil PerrierJouët Champagne Garden at 54 on Bath in the leafy suburb of Rosebank. Offering a signature blend of luxury, style and intuitive service, the champagne garden’s enchanted ambience is unmatched. It’s nearly 17h00, right? 1 www.tsogosun.com

MUJTABA MUSTAPHA Interior Architect: Mufudi Design Studio

M

ujtaba was born in 1985 and raised in a small town in the North West where his childhood memories were filled with many challenging, but exciting experiences. He has always been a free-spirited, adventurous and rather rebellious individual, who prefers to wander the path less-travelled. After completing his schooling career Mujtaba found himself undecided about which avenue to follow. He was pressured into studying a BCom degree which, due to his lack of interest, fell incomplete. Inspired by his older sister, who was studying architecture at the time, Mujtaba became captivated by the design environment, its expression, and the opportunity to create. This lead him to enrol in a degree in Interior Design at the University of Johannesburg. “I loved it and was good at it. I began to explore my creativity. This was enhanced by the talented individuals I was surrounded with” he says.

58

As an Interior Architect Mujtaba works on everything regarding the interior space from conceptual designs, spatial layouts, wall, floor and ceiling details to lighting and electrical layouts as well as material specifications. “We Hello Joburg • April 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

also collaborate and coordinate with architects, contractors and suppliers. We come together as a team from the inception of the project, to ensure all requirements and elements have been considered and suitable solutions have been met”. Mujtaba says that his favourite and most challenging project to work on to date has to be the Tariq Bin Ziyad Mosque, a timeless structure, located in the heart of Linbro Park. “I was so privileged to work on this. A fusion of  vibrant colours and intricate calligraphy, mixed with complex patterns of Islamic art, added to this harmonious and mystic structure that brought the community together, both physically and spiritually”.  Mujtaba says that having been a part of the passionate and dedicated team working on this magnificent project was really rewarding. As for his opinion on the top décor trends for autumn 2019, Mujtaba says BE BOLD.

“I'm currently loving layering the interior space with deeper jewel tones, luxurious velvet, brass details and bold artwork. This takes away from the usual minimalist shades of grey interiors that we tend to see everywhere, and brings with it a lot of character and visual interest” he says. Mujtaba’s top three interior tips: L et your interior space be an expression of your individuality and personality.  Choose a theme and have references. This simplifies the decision making-process.  Create depth and visual interest by layering colour, texture, form and materials.  Q @Mufudidesignstudio 1 www.mufudi.com  k info@mufudi.com

Words Danita Pilley Images Supplied

So, what inspired him to create Mufudi Design Studio? Mujtaba says that the 8h00 to 17h00 system and ploughing through traffic in the mornings and evenings was exhausting for him and negatively affected his creativity. “I decided to break away from this mundane regime and work towards building an interior design company of my own. With God's grace and the continued support of those around me, Mufudi Design Studio was established in March 2018”. Mufudi Design studio serves as a personal space from which Mujtaba informs, inspires and assists people to transform their interiors into a unique and personalised expression of themselves.

Artist Ashlinn Gray, South African born singer-songwriter, plays with the light and dark sides of her struggle for truth and authenticity. Ashlinn began to write her first songs at the age of 16 and has since released her self-titled debut EP, along with first single Battleships, which made the iTunes top 40 and dominated the airwaves, charting on top stations across South Africa. The 21-year-old has now recently made a move to the USA where she recorded STFU and performed shows at famous venues such as Hotel Cafe. We just had to catch up with her to find out more!

What’s your favourite thing about the music industry in Jozi? The variety! We have so many different sounds and cultures in our music that it is so distinctly South African. You can’t hear or feel anything else like it anywhere in the world. It’s what makes our industry so unique. What’s your top three wardrobe essentials? A jacket that stands out. Something black. Either a top, pair of pants or both. There is always black in my looks. A cute pair of sneakers, preferably platform.

Hello Joburg • April 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

One piece of advice you would give to aspiring musicians? Be true to yourself  and authentic. Your story should always shine through in your music and that's what people will pay money to hear.  Your favourite career memory to date? When I played Lusito Land Festival, someone proposed while I was singing. It was so beautiful. The crowd went wild and in that single moment, everyone had a smile on their faces. Do you have a specific creative process when creating music? I love to start my process sitting at the piano, playing around with chords and just singing whatever comes to mind. Sometimes it’s lyrics, other times it's melodies. A lot of the time I find my creativity peaks in the car. I wrote my latest single ‘STFU' that way. What can your fans look forward to from you this year? I’ve been sitting on a lot of new music over the past year and I’m really excited to release it all. I’ve been working a lot on my sound and I can’t wait to share it with my fans. My new single STFU is going to kickstart it all!
