Miele steam ovens generate the steam in a number of different ways – these include:

A CELEBRATION OF BUBBLES Don’t miss the inaugural Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo Celebration of Bubbles Festival taking place at the Inanda Country Club in Sandton on 29 & 30 March 2014. Tickets are available at webtickets.co.za or at the entrance. Date: 29 & 30th March Venue: Inanda Country Club, Sandton Tickets: R250 from Webtickets or at the entrance Open times: 12:00-18:00pm

• MultiSteam is the highlight on the new Miele steam ovens, explains Mercia: “This technology is predestined for use on the new Miele DG6400 built-in steam oven with a 38-litre cabinet, and the combination steam cookers in the larger 48-litre XL format, namely the DGC6600XL and the DGC6800XL combi-steam ovens.” So how does it work? Water from the tank is pumped into a powerful steam generator located behind the inner cabinet. The steam is admitted through 8 inlet ports (6 on combination steam ovens).
This shortens heat-up cycles, distributes steam fast and uniformly and results in perfect cooking results. MultiSteam technology is unique to Miele, and as such, it is immediately recognisable. Steam ports are integrated into a module on the rear panel of the steam oven. The MultiSteam symbol and the Miele logo are discreetly illuminated by LEDs (depending on the model).
 • MonoSteam is the tried-and-tested approach to the steam generation at Miele, in which steam is produced by boiling water in a tank, and then it is admitted to the cabinet through a single port. “MonoSteam is ideal for smaller models with smaller 24-litre and 32-litre cabinets. These include the built-in DGC6400 combi-steam oven, and the DG6010 ed countertop model,” explains Mercia. Hello Johannesburg March 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

A craving for Crave Illovo Healthy Fresh Food Fast

H

ello Joburgers, we would like to introduce to you the latest fresh food store to hit the streets of Jozi. Crave Illovo is a simple concept: ‘healthy fresh food fast’ and in today’s world, what more could you possibly crave? The owners Dylan Lowery and Jean-Marc Ducasse. both studied at International Hotel School for three years. Then with a further 8 years experience the two combined and mutually decided to run Crave Illovo. The two wanted an independent idea, they wanted to dig deep, understanding the consumer and introducing a place where you could eat at every single day and never get fat! Sounds too good to be true?

20

Well beautiful people of Jozi, believe it! “People are so important to us- both in terms of those that work with us and those that we serve. We always find time for a party here and there and take great care making sure everyone is happy in their work.” Dylan and Jean also decided to tackle the new venture hands on and to leave no stone unturned, thus there are no managers in the store... they are the managers. They put credit into 100% commitment. So here are some fun facts about Crave Illovo: - They are environmentally friendly - The only use organic products and serve organic chocolate - They even serve fresh popcorn,

daily - There is a soya milk option - They are introducing wheat-free wraps and pizza bases - They will also soon be offering hemp: organic protein powder - They offer outside catering - They serve one of the best salads in town: The warm Asian chicken salad - They offer FREE delivery (within a 5km radius) - They offer a cellphone charging station - They are open 6am-5pm week days and 7am-3pm Saturdays Crave Illovo is a truly unique experience, sourcing the highest quality products from around town and bringing in top-of-the-line, friendly staff. The ambiance is lively, with its spacious and inviting interior, it’s a

great place to stop by for the freshest food in town. The food is freshly made each and every day to ensure quality and freshness. The leftovers are then distributed to charities and homeless shelters. If that isn’t reason enough to visit this superbly impressive café, then we don’t know what is. Allora Ristorante Classico is designed around the concept of a traditional Italian village. The focal points of the restaurant are the central fountain and the very distinctive wood burning ovens, enchantingly decorated using warm mosaic brickwork that gives a sun- drenched effect. nce a power station in the 1920’s now turned cultural hub of arts and culture in the Newtown Precinct, the Turbine Hall has fast become the go to venue for exhibitions, events and creative inspiration. The Turbine Hall’s rich history is without doubt part and parcel of its intrigue and charm. Originally the last and largest of three steam-driven power stations built in town to supply electricity to the city, it was shut down in 1961 with the of expansion of Johannesburg’s Central Business District. Re-equipped to be used as a standby and for peak loading periods, it continued to function through the 70s. Today the Turbine Hall houses the offices of AngloGold Ashanti and other businesses, and is home to the forum company’s conference and wedding venue. Beautifully preserved to honour its former glory, Glynis Hyslop, the forum company’s

managing director was adamant that throughout the refurbishment process the founding principles of the entire project would be to ensure it remained a pristine heritage site. And once you step inside, you’ll appreciate that sentiment. So always in search of new eating experience, we booked ourselves a spot for The Forum Company’s Underground Dining 3-course affair. Whether its dinner for two or a group of friends catching up, here’s an excuse to dress up to the nines for a night on the town with dinner and dancing. To whet your dining appetite take note that these dinners happen but once a month so booking is essential. Burger King is a well-known international fast food brand and it will be launching its first of the Gauteng stores on Saturday, 1st February 2014 at the newly build Park Station North foodcourt. Burger King joins a number of national brands that have already been introduced at Park Station in line with PRASA’s new Real Estate strategy that entails increasing the revenue contribution from its vast property assets while at the same time improving customer experience The new and modern foodcourt at Park Station, where Burger King is located, was one of PRASA key projects completed in October 2013. The facility boasts exciting tenants and now serves as a seamless link between Park and Gautrain Station. The completion of this project symbolised a significant milestone towards PRASA’s programme to upgrade the entire Park Station precinct. The Company has committed R500million over the next three years to upgrade Park Station’s infrastructure and expand its retail offering in line with increasing demand for the station. This is part of a significant drive by PRASA to modernise its stations country-wide in prepara-

yama, Uniwors, Anat, Debonairs, King Pie and Snax Shack. The role and function of many PRASA’s stations will change in future, as the agency works to improve the overall passenger experience by revamping and modernising stations, creating intermodal transport hubs and introducing retail and other services. These add-on services will attract even more people to the station and thereby help PRASA to

increase the income generated by PRASA’s extensive property portfolio.

PRASA aims to become an effective and self-sufficient organization that provides superior public transport

solutions as well as convenient facilities for commuters and communities residing near its train stations. Major stations such as Johannesburg Park Station, Cape Town, Germiston, Mabopane, Durban, Berea Road, Pretoria and others will become significant intermodal facilities and offer significant retail and other

THE PANINI BROTHERS Come and say Ciao

T

he story of The Panini Brothers is pretty simple, The Panini Brothers was founded in 2013 by Italian brothers and a good friend. The concept was aimed at mimicking the classic Italian concept of coffee bars and delis. Their passion for good food and aromatic coffee stems from a very typical Italian upbringing, and this is clearly evident by who runs the kitchen. The kitchen is run by their feisty and passionate mamma and godmother AKA: Mamma Rosaria and Zia Patrizia. You don’t get much more Italian than these women, as they were born and bred in Rome. Their philosophy is comprised of the following words: Fresh, Simple, Home-made Italian goodness, and their philosophy is echoed in the manner in which the food prepared. Additionally, The Panini Brothers is not your typical run of the mill Café. If you know anything about Italian people – you will know that their love is in the food that they make and spreading love gives them the greatest joy, thus their customers become part of the family. There is a method to all the madness and without a doubt you can walk into Panini Brothers and Zia Patrizia will be cooking up something different everyday. Panini Brothers want to share the delicious meals that their Nonna and Mamma have mastered, therefore the panini’s are made on

site daily, using fillings of the finest ingredients, both local and imported products. And of course no Italian Café is complete without a good cup of coffee and Panini Brothers serves Lavazza coffee – Italy’s favourite coffee. There are also a number of signature dishes available, which are all homemade of course, however there is a limited number available per day to ensure the highest quality. There is also the option of creating your own salad or Panini and there are a variety of scrumptious pastries and imported French croissants to choose from. Panini Brothers also do platters and cater for all types of parties. The Panini Brothers 011 783 5438

Celio The must have international clothing brand for men’s ready-to-wear

I

n February Hello Joburg saw the launch of French men’s clothing retailer Celio at the Sir James van der Merwe Rooftop Bar in Johannesburg. The venue was quaint and rustic, sporting interesting statues, furniture and a mural of pictures and frames that was interesting to the eye. Placed at the entrance of the venue was a welcoming committee that encouraged patrons to partake in placing ‘locks of love’ on their own make shift Ponte Des Arts Bridge. French roll-sandwiches, and a cheese and fruit table that could put any Camembert lover in heaven. But I digress… Celio, founded by brothers Marc and Laurent Grosman, has become “The must have international clothing brand for men’s ready-to-wear” Says Laurent Morin, Director of the South African and Middle East stores, at the launch party. Celio strives to bring affordable fashion to men and reinterpreting the male wardrobe by tailoring to the specific climates’ cultural features, more specifically their 2013/2014 range, through 1) Urban; devoted to elegance. “In which each piece is tailored with fine details and is perfect for everyday wear”. 2) Free; devoted to designs that “remain true

to the brands values and have strong military influences.“ Keeping to a monochrome palette that composes on shades of brown, grey, khaki and sometimes electric blues and greens. 3) Club; devoted to the suit; offering new looks combining “precision and quality in the tradition” with twists in the tailoring and accessories. Top Billing’s Jonathan Boyton-Lee, looking suave in Celio Denim Jean’s, emceed Les soirées launch. With that said, Celio sells more Jeans than other popular denim retail stores in Europe. Darren Lurie, style advisor from “Off-the-cuff”, who focus on teaching men about fashion and how to use it as a tool to enhance their image, spoke about Celio’s take on Denim: “Denim is classic and I like the fact that Celio experiments with different cuts of denim. Keeping it fresh, trendy but still classic. “ Famous faces at the launch were that of Miss Earth 2012 Tamerin Jardine and her racecar-driving beau Gennaro Bonafede who finds the range “enticing”, Television and radio presenter Jen Su and Mr. South Africa 2012 Andrew Govender amongst others. Main Street Walks (MSW) is a concept that encourages people to rediscover the inner City and ultimately, the buzz of Johannesburg. The best way to connect with the city nucleus, like any other in the world, is by foot and by means of public transport. Have the imagination to go beyond conventional tourist packages: our guided tours, which start westwards from Arts on Main, navigate the city with the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system. Like all people who are passionate about the city, MSW knows that there are endless possibilities for authentically grasping the CBD’s magic.

EXPLORING JOBURG’S INNER CITY Why Not Take A Tour Of Your City With City Sightseeing & Joburg Places

F

eel Jozi’s heartbeat on City Sightseeing’s Red City Tour featuring 12 exciting stops. Africa’s most vibrant city is even more spectacular from an open-top bus; its rich heritage even more compelling via commentary in a language of your choice. ‘ This year the CitySightseeing bus marks something treasured, something memorable. When was the last time you took a tour of your own city? When was the last time you felt like a tourist in your own city? We seem to have misplaced parts of our South African constitution; we seem to have mislaid our South African birthright. And 2014 is the time to take that all back!

“WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU TOOK A TOUR OF YOUR OWN CITY?” City Sightseeing offers an unmatched and unforgettable tour through the Johannesburg CBD that stops at all the top tourist attractions. The tour operates on a hopon, hop-off basis, which means you can climb off the bus at any given time and then get back on the bus when you are ready. You can also choose to stay on the bus for two hours and you can experience the best of Johannesburg with the onboard commentary, which explains the story behind the sites- available in 16 different languages. It really is a special way to participate with your city and that’s exactly what

the Hello Joburg team decided to do. Our day began at the Gold Reed City Hotel where we had a lavish buffet style breakfast. Within the greater scheme of Johannesburg, Gold Reef City is almost at the center, located halfway between the inner city and Soweto. It certainly was nostalgic as most weekends as a child; were spent at The Gold Reef City Theme Park, which is one of Jozi’s most popular attractions. Equally rewarding is exploring Jozi’s Story of Gold. ‘Here you can walk along the streets of a replica village, resembling what Johannesburg looked like in its early days, shortly after the discovery of gold in 1886.’ The highlight: being able to descend into the underground mine.

“YOU COULD POSSIBLY SPEtND AN ENTIRE DAY IN MAIN STREET” Furthermore we then got picked up by the bus from the Apartheid Museum, which is an inspiring location as it of course portrays the full brutality of the apartheid system. We spent a leisurely thirty minutes on the bus before hopping off at The Financial District on Main Street. Here we witnessed the attractive Leaping Impala or Impala Stampede sculpture, donated by the Oppenheimer family the city in 1960. Advancing along Main Street Mall is another absorbing golden sculpture, the rhino. This is a replica of the much smaller Mapunbugwe Rhino – a golden artifact unearthed by University of Pretoria archaeologists in 1934. You could possibly spend an entire day on main Street and enjoy a coffee

at City Perk Café or head to Darkie Cafe in Anderson Street for fusion cuisine or to the Mapunbugwe Hotel Apartments with its famous Vault Bar. However we had to move along as we only had half a day and there was a great deal more to visit.

Hotel. The day was truly a remarkable experience, a magical formula for the enthusiasm of Joburgers and a brand that acts as a magnet to draw more tourists into our beautiful city. “Hop on to see Johannesburg like you have never seen it before”

Sitting back and relaxing on the Rea Vaya bus to our next stop, Gandhi Square, The Fashion District- with the Fashion Kapitol at its center -and Little Addis it became apparent that there was still so much to learn about our city. It was quite unnerving whilst also enticing to know how little we know about our city. The City Sightseeing Bus as well as the Rea Vaya are indeed catalysts to ensure the easy flow of knowledge and education amongst the people of Johannesburg and its tourists. In addition Little Addis was remarkable, there was a trend towards economic success, interaction between its people and an Africa, which showcases growth and progress. We stopped at an Ethiopian style, Little Addis Café and had their famous meat and veggie combo injera platters as well as several traditional Ethiopian delicacies, Topping it all off with the best coffee in town; authentic Ethiopian style coffee, brewed right in front of us. What a treat!

By: Bianca Maletsky (@beemaletsky)

“WE STOPPED AT AN ETHIOPIAN STYLE, LITTLE ADDIS CAFE” Regrettably our tour of Johannesburg had to come to an end and lastly we returned to Gold Reef City

ROODEPOORT THEATRE GETS REVAMP Joburg City Theatres Launched The New And Improved Roodepoort Theatre

A

n ambitious redevelopment of the Roodepoort Theatre was given the go ahead and on Friday, 7 February 2014 Joburg City Theatres launched the new and improved Roodepoort Theatre.

“Joburg City Theatres launched the new and improved Roodepoort Theatre.” Roodepoort Theatre was established in 1981 by the City of Roodepoort and throughout the years there were several names changes (Sasol Promusica, Promusica Theatre, JoburgPromusica) and the vision of the theatre has taken many a turn on the road to success. This created confusion amongst patrons and as a result the theatre lost its identity. It is essential therefore that the theatre re-establishes itself within the community and surrounding areas. A new identity for the theatrehas therefore been built around development, creativity, innovation and fun. Branding for Roodepoort Theatre is not merely about a new logo, it represents the personality of the organisation – the invisible aura that surrounds the theatre.

44

The theatre is a safe and entertaining, vibrant place to take the families, with a diverse programming, which meets the vision of Roodepoort Theatre under the management of Joburg City Theatres.

“The theatre is a safe and entertaining, vibrant place to take the families” The vision of the Roodepoort Theatre is to be recognised for the meaningful impact the Theatre makes towards social development and cohesion through Youth Development. Roodepoort Theatre’s mission is to use its infrastructure as a vehicle to enrich the lives of the youth, by selecting art genres proven to effect meaningful development. Roodepoort Theatre’s audience development strategy will focus on children and youth aged between 2 and 35 years of age, and families. The market for a youth theatre seems to be a solid growth phase and significant revenue benefits can be realised from investment in this genre. In order to meet the required targets of the City of Johannesburg and link our programme to meet the strategy of the Joburg 2040, Growth and Development Strategy Roodepoort

Theatre will be introducing the following programming: • Early Childhood Development programmes • Devastating outcomes of Drinking and Driving Programme: “Too much Punch Judy” will be produced in April 2014; the production will educate high school leaners about the devastating outcomes of drinking and driving. • My Band Project and a Community Youth Festival, National Eisteddfod Academy to name but a few will also be introduced in order to support youth development and social cohesion. The complex will stage almost 100 productions and events per annum, which in turn hopes to attract over 60 000 visitors each year.

“The complex will stage almost 100 productions and events per annum, which in turn hopes to attract over 60 000 visitors each year.” The re-launched programme will kick off with a special performance of

Aria! Opera for Everyone on Friday 7 February 2014 and is by invitation only. This performance will be aimed at both the newcomer to opera as well as the connoisseur. In addition, a Family Day took place on Saturday 8 February 2014 from 12hoo-17h00 and was open to the greater Johannesburg community. That Day showcased a number community acts: comedians, magician, bands, dancers and singers. The event, being the first of its kind, was free. The redesign also includes a restaurant called Stages. After the successful launch of Stages at the Joburg Theatre, it was decided that Roodepoort Theatre would also have a Stages restaurant. Although Stages Restaurant is a new entrant in the South African hospitality industry, it is already drawing in a diverse range of customers. When you want to negotiate deals with business associates over breakfast, Stages is the place to go to. When you want to take your family out for a quiet evening treat, you may not have to look beyond Stages. The menu contains all the dishes that you would expect from any reputable restaurant. “However, it is the quality of the food and the service one gets that makes all the difference,” says Branden Karim, General Manager of Hospitality & Catering. For interviews, images and other information requests, please contact Nevolan Reddy Nevolan@roodepoorttheatre.com

The Roodepoort Theatre has come a long way since its initial opening in February 1981. The Theatre was constructed in what would prove to be the last decade of Apartheid. The Roodepoort Theatre was re-launched on the 7th February 2014, with a new look, a young and energetic staff compliment and a program that was sure to appeal to a vast and diverse audience. The launch was held over two days with a number of top acts all performing over the two days. The 7th February was the official re-launch with City Officials and key stakeholders of the theatre being invited. The 8th of February was opened to the public and saw a mix of stand-up comedy, dance groups and bands. The festivities on the 8th were for the entire family as this is the vision of the Theatre

HJ:.Born in Cape Town what is it that you prefer? The laid back seascape lifestyle of the Cape or the hustle and bustle that is Joburg

hile you were cooking up all sorts of deliciousness from A Week in The Kitchen, we were busy cooking up even more deliciousness in Another Week in The Kitchen.

NR:If only things could be a bit more balanced… If we could have roughly 80% less hipster coffee shops in Cape Town – I think everyone will agree that still leaves us with enough hipster coffee for us all to live on and if we had 80% less crime in Johannesburg I think we can also agree that still leaves the criminals with enough theft and murder to live on.

And it may be hard to believe, but it is even better than the first.

HJ:.You’re a father now too, so is a lot of your new material based on personal jokes about bringing up kids? NR: I do make more jokes about bringing up children but seeing as though there are about two billion children on earth – I wouldn’t call the jokes personal. Then again, the first time my child urinated into my eyeball, I took it pretty personally. HJ:.Your accents are brilliant, from a jewish kugel to Desmond Tutu, or a stereotypical Indian you always seem to progress in stand up comedy. What is the secret? NR: Being an only child. HJ:.Can someone learn to be funny on stage?

NR: Possibly, but that someone would also have to learn to withstand endless ridicule and torment and take on abject fear as a career path.

handy. HJ:.What are the secrets for telling everyday jokes in order to get the biggest laughs? NR: Well normally (as part of the comedian code) I wouldn’t say, but I feel a kind of affinity for your readers suddenly so here goes: just before you deliver the punch line, put your weight onto your left foot. Works every time. HJ: What is the difference between trying to write jokes and develop stand-up comedy material? NR: Writing stand-up requires sharing your deepest, darkest most embarrassing thoughts and feelings and potentially offending every single person in your life to the point where none of them will return any of your calls. Writing jokes can then come in

Opel in 2013 again sold more than one million cars globally

G

eneral Motors has published its global sales figures for 2013 and Opel is among the winners. The Rüsselsheim based manufacturer continues to be the second largest brand of General Motors and strengthened its position as the third-strongest passenger car brand in Europe according to preliminary figures.

“the thirdstrongest passenger car brand in Europe according to preliminary figures.” In a difficult market environment,

Opel sold 1.064 million vehicles. Opel and its sister brand Vauxhall in the United Kingdom achieved a market share of 5.61 percent in the European total vehicle market compared to 5.59 percent the year before. This is the first year-on-year growth in market share for the brand in 14 years. “Our new models ADAM, Cascada and Mokka in particular contributed to this improvement, in spite of an overall difficult market environment. We have already received 62 000 orders for the ADAM and 177 000 for the Mokka”, said Peter Christian Küspert, Member of the Management Board, Sales and Aftersales. The result is broad-based. Opel/Vauxhall was able to increase its market share in eleven countries year-onyear, among them core markets like Germany, the UK and Spain, as well as the growth markets Turkey and Russia. In the German passenger car

market, Opel increased its market share according to the Kraftfahrtbundesamt (Federal Office for Motor Vehicles) to 7.0 percent, compared to 6.9 percent one year ago.

“In a difficult market environment, Opel sold 1.064 million vehicles.” The top sellers Astra and Corsa again were among the ten best-selling models across Europe in 2013, reaching positions seven and eight. The Mokka small SUV entered the market strongly and conquered second place in its segment for the full year, while the new Insignia was number two in its segment, not including premium competitors.

In the UK, Opel/Vauxhall’s single largest market, the Insignia and Zafira finished number one and Corsa, Astra and Mokka number two in their respective segments. In Opel’s home market in Germany, the Meriva stood out as the best seller in its segment. The Corsa and Astra beat their direct competitors to second place in their respective segments. Opel also continued to be successful in Hungary where the brand led the passenger car market for the third year in a row. Opel reached the number three position in Austria and Greece and registered the highest market share of the last six years in Spain, reaching 6.98 percent in the total vehicle market. In South Africa Opel continues to expand its product portfolio as part of the renewed focus on the brand.
