SPIRIT OF THE DANCE Joburg Theatre’s Most Popular Show Returns For An Unprecedented Sixth Season

O

thers have come and

gone. But the most popular Irish Dance Show to ever visit South Africa now returns for its sixth unprecedented season on the stage of The Mandela at Joburg Theatre. The international smash hit SPIRIT OF THE DANCE is one of the most successful shows ever to come out of Ireland and has been seen by more than twenty million people around the world.

“THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SHOWS EVER TO COME OUT OF IRELAND” First visiting Joburg Theatre in February 2009, the record-breaking dance

10

show returned “by public demand” for a second season the same year, then again in 2003, 2005 and 2009. SPIRIT OF THE DANCE has given more performances – over 150 to date – than any other show in the history of this theatre.

“A SPECTACULAR BLEND OF TRADITIONAL CULTURE THAT HAS THRILLED AUDIENCES FOR THE PAST FIFTEEN YEARS” Irish in origin and bursting with raw energy, SPIRIT OF THE DANCE is a breathtaking production featuring a spectacular blend of traditional culture that has thrilled audiences

for the past fifteen years. Powerful, show stopping Irish Dance combines with the passionate Latino rhythms of Tango, Flamenco and Red-Hot Salsa to produce a thrilling, heartpounding production.

“ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING AND VERSATILE DANCE SHOWS EVER” The world champion dancers of the Irish International Dance Company sound like a runaway express train and their frenzied skill and military precision sends shivers down your spine. Not one Irish dance shoe steps out of line as the thunderous feet perform as one, with an excitement that leaves audiences screaming for more. SPIRIT OF THE DANCE delivers

a foot-stomping entertainment spectacular with dynamic lighting, dazzling costumes and stunning choreography.

“Our patrons have been asking us to bring SPIRIT OF THE DANCE back, but for the past five years there just hasn’t been a company available from their world tours,” says Bernard Jay, Executive Producer for Joburg Theatre. “I’m thrilled that finally we’re getting back one of the most entertaining and versatile dance shows we’ve ever presented on our stage.” THE DEETS The Mandela Theatre, Joburg Theatre Complex, Braamfontein 3 to 15 June 2014 Tickets on sale from R160 per person. www.joburgtheatre.com or 0861 670 670

THE EATERYJHB A Quaint Little Spot With a Whole Lot of Soul A cosy French bistro in Parkmore, The EateryJHB is a quaint little spot with a whole lot of soul. Off the beaten track from the decor to the food, you’ll find many a professional typing and eating over lunch. It’s a versatile little spot though so if you need a romantic setting for a date or a bustling spot with a vibe on Saturday night, we really do recommend it too. The food is different and beautifully presented. Big fans will recommend the unusual meat cuts like authentic beef tongue with Dijon mustard. But the Kabeljo and the Rump are also something to write home about. They describe their food as fine dining without the pomp. But don’t let the short menu fool you. It’s still going to be a challenge to decide on what to eat as each dish is created to wow. With great wine pairing suggestions and a variety of cuisines from oysters to Tandoori chicken, there is something on the menu for every palate. And seeing as though the menu changes every two months, there is always a reason to go back. With a strong green ethos and belief in sustainability be assured that only the most ethically produced and prepared ingredients will grace your plates. CHURCHILS An Upmarket Venue Tailored For Your Bar & Bistro Fan

From the crazy cats who started some of Joburg’s most popular entertainment venues like Vacca Matta, Movida and Buddha Ta comes a new, slick and pretty happening spot called Churchills. And if the above mentioned night clubs weren’t your cup of tea then, please don’t worry. Churchills offers an entirely different experience. Moving away from the loud doof doof club scene, comes an upmarket venue tailored for your bar and bistro fan and smack bam in one of Joburg’s most central scenes too - Melrose Arch. Just a few weeks old, if you haven’t been already, do yourself a favour and go. It makes for a great evening out. Classic, warm, cosy and inviting with its British style decor, quality menu and wide drink selection, it is the perfect spot for a function, drinks after work or a bit of a razzle on the weekend. Enjoy a selection of some of the world’s finest cigars, premium whiskies and luxury champagnes while you chat to friends without being drowned out by the beats. The decor changes gradually as you move around the venue but the grungy, smoking library lounge is our favourite. Finished off with gold plated booze bottles, skull shaped candles and dusty books we felt right at home in the wing backed velvet chair sipping our wine and puffing on our electric ciggies. SILVERSTAR

IS SURE TO ENTERTAIN

The Vape craze hits Joburg If you have half a social life and have been out and about in the past few weeks you are bound to have noticed people sitting comfortably in non smoking areas of restaurants and pubs puffing away.

Hugely popular in Europe, Joburg is fast adapting to the electronic cigarette trend. Stephen Fernandes runs the only VapeShop in Johannesburg. Their kiosk in Melrose Arch has been nothing short of a train station since it opened 2 months ago. Fernandes says “sales have been promising. Everybody is dying to quit smoking. We are trying to share the experience that changed our lives. Our biggest value is in our customers’ experiences. Word of mouth referrals really make a big difference” And while they are designed for recreational use the bottom line remains that a lot of people end up quitting. The Vape Shop is a leading supplier of electronic cigarettes, e-liquids (flavours) and accessories. Fernandes is strict about what electronic cigarette products they stock. All their brands and products are tested, reviewed and carefully selected by a specialised team .

Silverstar is Tsogo Sun’s casino and entertainment destination in Mogale City and is currently undergoing a R560-million expansion This exciting redevelopment facelift is adding a host of family entertainment and dining facilities to the complex to secure its position as the premier destination in the West Rand. Visitors will soon be able to experience a host of new offerings: • Cinema complex boasting the latest 3D technology • An extended children’s entertainment area with the latest arcade games, a 12-lane bowling alley and laser-tag games • Six new restaurants which include a variety of food offerings such as Thai, Seafood, Italian, Portuguese and Al Fresco. A great new highlight is also the Publicity Grill and Bar for a casual family dining experience with live entertainment.

Always one to try out a trend I bought myself an eLeaf. The eLeaf is one of the VapeShop’s leading brand of electronic cigarettes. Designed to bring a new revolutionary approach to electronic cigarettes, this particular one is designed with the coil or heating element at the bottom opposed to the traditional top coil systems which I’m told creates a smoother more flavoursome vapour experience. But there are other brands as well which include iSmoka, Joytech, Innokin and Kangertech. Like any new technology the industry is moving at a rapid rate. Fernandes is naturally ahead of his game eyeing out developments in order to offer his customers the best vaping experience. So what’s the big deal you ask? Being an eLeaf smoker myself I can tell you that since I bought my e-cig 10 weeks ago, I have not smoked a single cigarette. No wonder the e-cigs are so popular. On that note let’s talk about the health risks. While nothing is healthier than breathing fresh air and it is a controversial topic, Fernandes talks from experience, “If you ask any e cigarette smoker what are the health risk they will go on a long ramble how they feel healthier and there are thousands of harmful chemicals in traditional cigarettes. It is about mitigating the risk of traditional cigarettes and using a healthier alternative. In my experience the health risks are about 1% of normal cigarettes.” www.vapeshop.co.za

• Four of these restaurants surround a large outdoor square that will offer regular entertainment and features a state-of-the-art 62m² high definition screen to be used for major sport events. • A domed events arena for concerts, festivals and expos Whilst construction is underway, Silverstar still has a wide array of entertainment attractions. These include a world-class casino, a 34-room luxury hotel, an award-winning spa, regular concerts and events as well as several restaurants including Steak, Black Cherry Coffee shop, and Billy G – a buffet restaurant. The exciting development is set for completion in September. Come and explore this beautiful corner of Jozi and be surprised! describes the new menu as a sophisticated culinary journey that will appeal to a wide dining audience.” The most popular items on the menu remain - such as lamb knuckle curry with basmati rice, poppadum and condiments and our signature Lacuna Crème Brule - but the hotel has reformed the overall profile of the menu based on world-wide food trends and what our customers have told us in the past year or so. As a result of this, the new Lacuna Bistro menu incorporates some Nigerian influences such as like chicken pepper soup and Jollof rice - as well as Mediterranean, Asian and American inspirations that range from tapas and snack platters to gourmet salads and sandwiches to indulgent

However, the wine list is extensive and varied so Chef Orr encourages patrons to discuss personal preferences and alternative food and wine pairing options with the trained staff before ordering.

SANDTON BAR THAT BEATS TO ITS OWN DRUM Meet Head Barman At Hard Rock Café Johannesburg - Tyrone Botha

I

f you want an authentic report on the ins and outs of a good restaurant - ask the guy who runs the bar. He has a birds eye-view of the whole playground. From his vantage point, head barman and supervisor Tyrone Botha sees everything a little better. To tell the truth he sees it all. ‘’People are a crazy bunch, fun, but crazy… I have had people that want to come behind the bar to make cocktails. We have the full range from people just looking to relax and then the inebriated customers who believe they are the best dancers in the house. ‘’

‘’PEOPLE ARE A CRAZY BUNCH, FUN, BUT CRAZY…” The Hard Rock Cafe Bar in Mandela Square in Sandton, really is in a league of its own though. So it’s a

no brainer why people flock to it. With 5994 drumsticks strung from the roof to the original drum set that Matt Sorum of Guns and Roses used on the longest running world tour in rock n roll history which now sits behind the bar, genuine “Hard Rockers” have been known to go the distance.

“THE ORIGINAL DRUM SET THAT MATT SORUM OF GUNS AND ROSES” Tyrone recalls a traveller from abroad with the sole purpose of visiting the café. There are of course many internationals that pop in but Tyrone talks about one that really stands out. ‘’We had one guy who flew in from Germany, came to Hard Rock Café Johannesburg, had a Hurricane and a Legendary Burger and flew back to Germany that same night.” That’s love right there so where do we sign up for that lifestyle? The reception of Hard Rock Cafe by the locals has been nothing short of

familial and celebratory which has as much to do with the service as it does the genuine rock and roll vibe that meets you the minute you step inside. It speaks to their motto too explains Tyrone, ‘love all, serve all’

“GENUINE ROCK AND ROLL VIBE THAT MEETS YOU THE MINUTE YOU STEP INSIDE” Now for the fun part. What to order? So for the uninitiated, the extensive local menu may feel overwhelming (and is delicious from top to bottom) but you can’t go wrong with the Legendary Burger - just ask the German guy. And to wash it done. Tyrone suggests the Watermelon Margarita with the Bahama Mama coming in at a close second. But if you reckon you have what it takes to pull up a chair at T’s bar as a real member of the family then try the Hurricane. Considered as the Café signature drink, he describes it as Hard Rock in a glass. ‘’I would

definitely recommend that you have one when visiting Hard Rock Café Johannesburg. Prepare to have a new favourite drink.’’ It’s obvious that Tyrone loves what he does. ‘’I come to work with the goal of making every single person that walks through our doors and sits at the bar, realise that there is no other place like Hard Rock Cafe. You make drinks, you meet great people and you work as hard as you can amongst the most amazing staff behind the bar.’’ As for the team of bartenders he works with? Tyrone responds ‘’I would say it is almost impossible to describe them in words, come to the bar and see for yourself. We have premium liquor and the best cocktails made with flair and passion. The vibe is what sets our bar apart. Don’t ask how I know about the number of drumsticks though.” THE DEETS Hard Rock Café Johannesburg Nelson Mandela Square Sandton 011 784 3144 By Carly Ritz @carlyritz

JOBURG RESTAURANT GROUP SORING TO NEW HEIGHTS Meet Sean Barber, Propriator of The Highly Successful Rockets All Stars Restaurant Group

S

ean Barber is the force behind the Rockets All Stars brand. What started as a flagship restaurant on Rivonia Boulevard is now a nuclear family with Rockets Parkhurst, Rockets Express in Sandton and Rockets Lolitas Tapas Bar in Parkhurst closing the loop. Pretty impressive for the guy who qualified and worked as a Chartered Accountant in London. But the creativity in his blood pumped too fast and he needed a change of pace. “It was killing me, and I had a hunch that restaurants was something I would be passionate about. If you can find a passion in something, you are halfway to becoming successful at it!” Joburg’s foodie family can be grateful he came home back to SA.

“JOBURG’S FOODIE FAMILY CAN BE GRATEFUL HE CAME HOME BACK TO SA” The first thing that people want to know is why Rocket? Although it is his favourite herb, it was not the inspiration for the name and if you know Sean then you’ll know that predictable doesn’t appear anywhere in his lingo. “It’s because I have

26

always loved the name, and thought it would work brilliantly for a restaurant. I have recently added an “S” to the name, making it “Rockets”, which is in no way because there are four stores, but more because I have an intense interest in Feng Shui and Numerology and the numbers for me make more sense. “

“IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO HAVING AN UNBELIEVABLE PRODUCT MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE” When it comes to what determines location Sean cuts through the myths and ghost theories. It all boils down to having an unbelievable product more than anything else. Sean adds “Once you have those in place then you can make sure you have a location that compliments your product. If you find a great location in which you have a high footfall, then it does make your chances of success that much greater, but remember, with high foot traffic comes high rent.” He adds that once you identify your target market set up nearby as most people like to go out for a meal relatively close to home. Running a restaurant is not for the

Hello Johannesburg May 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

faint-hearted, the idle or the fearful. For Sean there is no room for error here. “You have to have an unrelenting pressure on the quality of your food and service. You must be as fanatical about the quality of the last meal out of your kitchen as you were for the first meal you ever produced.” Other advise for budding restaurateurs include creating an environment in which people want to be. From the paint you use on the walls to the music that sets the tone, the customer’s experience starts the minute he steps into your restaurant. You need to grab him right there!

“CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH PEOPLE WANT TO BE” Sean feels strongly about the Feng Shui principles implemented thus far and won’t build in a place that has not had a full audit performed. “It is integral to that intangible welcoming feeling that someone feels when they walk into a space and immediately feel relaxed. There is so much more out there in terms of energy flow to which we as Westerners are completely oblivious.” But Rockets success suggests it’s a whole lot more tangible that we can even begin to unbderstand. Sean’s hands on role in the success

of his business is crystal clear. It is easy to distinguish an owner managed restaurant from one that is manager run. Sean feels strongly about creating and establishing your presence in your own restaurant. In this way not only does the boss set the tone for the rest of the staff to follow but allows you to lend your support to them too. But always offering a balanced perspective, Sean adds that it can also be a double edged sword “in that if you want to grow your brand, there is a point in which you have to step away in order to open new stores. I think that if you grow too big, then you run the risk that this required amount of attention is no longer a possibility and something has to give. The trick is to hire the right team, and make sure that they believe in the culture of your brand and your business. “ For the uninitiated, if you haven’t been to Rocket’s Lolita’s (next to Rockets Parkhurst) yet, you have no idea what you are missing. From extensive craft beers to fine wines and delicious cocktails and sushi comes a touch of brilliance to the whole experience. Check out the Tapas menu which is sensational. uring extensive travels, working and living abroad and many a plate of different, international cuisine, a couple of food lovers, husband and wife team, Christo and Marthie Crafford, also experienced sensational gourmet food from food trucks. Martha’s MOJO, the operating company, was established in 2013 and the first truck, 5 Star Street Chef started to roam the streets, so to speak. The second brand, Amexicano is now under construction. The Martha’s MOJO Food Trucks might just be the thing you need for your next event. Catering for various occasions, they are at markets such as Jozi Food Market, Irene Country Market and Capital Urban Market and festivals, corporate functions, movie shoots, private functions (weddings, birthday parties) and even street pop ups like good ol Greenside or Parktown North. “Where there is hunger for delicious gourmet street food that is freshly prepared, we ‘pop up’” says Teresa Fouche, the operations manager. Social media plays an important role in their model from start to finish. With a strong social media focus, their Facebook and Twitter profiles are a hub of chit chat, food bragging and socialising. “Our patrons use this to follow our movements around Gauteng and know where to find us and comment on their experiences.” says the owners. They regularly update the locations and details about

the events and menus on their social media profiles.

CRAFT BEER CORNER WITH LEAGUE OF BEERS Rob Heyns Shares His Knowledge About Craft Beer

R

ob Heyns from League of Beers has been educating us about craft beer. Last month he discussed the five points of tasting craft beer: Appearance, Aroma, Flavour, Mouthfeel and Overall Impression.

Quality, simplicity, freshness and personal care

This month, he discusses how to measure a craft beer aroma accurately: When it comes to craft beer aroma, you need to judge it from a glass and not from a bottle. This is practical. Firstly because you look ridiculous trying to get your nose into a bottle, and secondly because a lot of the smells are only properly released after the beer has been poured out (into a glass, not into an awaiting mouth.)

“THE AROMA OF A BEER IS HUGELY LINKED TO THE FLAVOUR OF THAT BEER” Step 1: Open the beer (it is also difficult to smell a closed beer), pour it into a glass and move it towards your nose. The volatile aromas are best found as soon as you pour the beer (volatile as in ‘active flavour components’, not ‘explosive’. Don’t worry. You’ll definitely keep your nose intact.) Step 2: I like to call this the drive-by aroma test. Basically, you keep your arm at 90 degrees and drive the beer below and past your nose. Try not to flinch. Step 3: Put your nose in (the glass, not the beer) and take a solid sniff. I always think it’s a good idea to try a few different sniffing techniques

(Don’t do this too thoroughly or you’ll end up with beer all over your face and shorts.) Open your hand and take a good, strong whiff. That is some intense aroma right there. With that slight vacuum, you’ve captured the main aroma characteristic of the beer and then released it into your happily expectant nostrils. The aroma of a beer is hugely linked to the flavour of that beer. Next month we’ll be discussing beer flavours and how to taste for different elements. Yours in beer, Rob www.leagueofbeers.com @leagueofbeers

to pick up different elements. Take some long, deep sniffs and then take a few rapid, short ones and see if you pick up different aroma compounds. Step 4: Put your hand on top of the glass and swirl the brew around. A CELEBRATION OF ECOLOGY & LUXURY INTERTWINED

Midori Salon was conceived by Anisha Patel. A dynamic and creative interior designer, with the ability of turning any space into a masterpiece. Her passion for Eco Friendly living has filtered into almost every aspect of her lifestyle. So when Anisha ventured into opening a Salon, Midori Eco Salon an inevitable. Midori Salon was designed with only recyclable materials, and hosts a variety of light green or Organic products. Staying true to its name, Midori, which translated means Green in Japanese.

Hello Johannesburg May 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

H

ello Joburgers I promise you that Midori Eco Salon is the best thing to arrive in Jozi since the Nelson Mandela statue on Sandton Square. It may be one of the best salons in all of South Africa since it launched in 2012 . Don’t you love the sound of a committed Eco Friendly Salon catering to all grooming and pampering needs for men and women? And if that doesn’t grab your attention then how does this sound… You are offered a complimentary welcome beverage of your choices on arrival, there is an in-house limo service to transport you to and from the salon but wait there’s more, Midori is the ONLY salon in the Southern Hemisphere Equipped with WiFi iPad’s at all grooming stations for your convenience. Sold yet? I thought so!

“THE BEST THING TO ARRIVE IN JOZI SINCE THE NELSON MANDELA STATUE” I can honestly say that visiting the Midori Salon was possibly the greatest moment in my life. It is tucked away inside the Greenpark Centre, Benmore, and the beautiful design, elegant look and natural detail romantically add to the feeling of indulgence, of spoiling. And my favorite part about the look and feel is that everything is recycled,

reprocessed and salvaged into stunning pieces of art and décor. From the gleaming crystal chandelier to the tiled floors even the mirrors are recycled hence why it truly is an Eco salon.

“BEAUTIFUL DESIGN, ELEGANT LOOK AND NATURAL DETAIL” What’s more is even the hair and beauty products are green, organic and natural. They are gentle and kind on the skin and body. Midori actually means green in Japanese and Anisha Patel is the genius behind the brand. I say genius as she has managed to create a holistic and calming environment whilst still keeping it contemporary and absolutely fabulous. Her passion for Eco Friendly living has filtered into almost every aspect of her lifestyle. So when Anisha ventured into opening a Salon, Midori Eco Salon was inevitable. Hello Joburgers please I urge you to delve into the Midori world because I promise you, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. In fact you might even thank me. WHO IS DJ EUPHONIK & WHY DOES HE LOVE JOZI SO MUCH? Why does Euphonik call Joburg home and how does the city influence his life by Carly Ritz

O

ne of the country’s most sought after djs, Euphonik or Themba Nkosi as his parents named him considers himself a DJpreneur. Cool right? Why didn’t we think of that? “ He sums up what he does best in 21 words. ‘’ I play music in small dark rooms called clubs. My core is a DJ and my entrepreneurial spirit stems from that.’’

I play music in small dark rooms called clubs. My core is a DJ and my entrepreneurial spirit stems from that.’’ Born in Mpumalanga, KwaNyamazane, the Jozi based DJ is opening a store in Braamfontein later this year. Definitely something we will keep you posted about. What we can tell you in the meantime is that the shop will be called Debut and long-time friend and fellow muso DJ Kent is also in the mix.

‘’I am blessed to be able to go to bed excited about waking up the next day and do what I love. I’m a beast of passion so I never touch what I don’t enjoy and I’ve never had to.’’ With international travels planned later on in the year for Spain, Tokyo and Holland, you wouldn’t be wrong to say Euphinik is living the rock star life but he keeps his words humble, ‘’I am blessed to be able to go to

46

bed excited about waking up the next day and do what I love. I’m a beast of passion so I never touch what I don’t enjoy and I’ve never had to.’’ And in case you didn’t know already, this DJ loves Johannesburg as much as we do. ‘’I love the spirit and the energy of JHB. Anything is possible here and to survive you have to hustle and be head strong in your endeavours. The city is also arguably one of the best looking in the world and it’s not too far from Benoni where my parents live.’’

’I love the spirit and the energy of JHB. Anything is possible here” Naturally there are a couple of things he doesn’t love as much like the ‘dog eat dog’ mentality for one. Most of us know all too well about the Joburg rat race. Euphonik doesn’t see the necessity for the cut throat environment , ‘’I believe there’s always enough to go around for everyone because God creates things in abundance but in Jozi 99% of the people believe in order for them to make it someone else needs to lose out.’’ So here is the Euphonik run down on what is cool and happening in this city of gold: Hello Joburg: Favourite spot for a chow? Euphonik: Mash in Bryanston. They make traditional African food served in true north style. HJ: For a drink with mates? Euphonik:: Churchills in Melrose it’s central, it’s classy and all my mates love it. HJ: Hotel? Euphonik: Protea Hotel Fire & Ice in Melrose I’ve never slept there but it’s very charismatic and run by forward thinking people.

Hello Johannesburg May 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

HJ: Where to chill? Euphonik: Sway nightclub in Sandton. No two nights are ever the same there and I love that it looks and feels what clubs used to be like back in the day. HJ: Favourite shop? Euphonik: I frequently shop at Sandton City. It is a one stop for

everything and offers the best shopping experience. HJ: Favourite market? Euphonik: By far Neighbour Hood Goods in Braamfontein. Good food, good people and never a dull moment. HJ: Club (to play in)? Euphonik:Nicci Beach in Boksburg.
