Our team recently spent an evening at The Belgian Triple – the home of SA’s largest selection of Belgian craft beer. In fact, they’ve even got a unique gluten free beer! All these thirst-quenching beers are paired with a delightful menu that’s been created by five-star chefs, so flip to our Nightlife section to see pictures from our evening of indulgence.
When it comes to the food front – we’ve got you sorted! From crispy crust pizzas at Toni’s Pizzeria and freshly baked pastries from Afro Boer, all your craving’s will be satisfied. Our featured restaurant of the month is the gorgeous Blue Crane Restaurant and Bar, which is located next to the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary. Not only does this spot serve up an amazing Sunday lunch, but the views are spectacular. We highly recommend you make the time to pop in, – you won’t regret it one bit We also had the opportunity to check out the WAXIT Salon in Menlyn Maine, so be sure to read our review in the Beauty section. This is our go to spot for waxes, threading and must-have products. The staff are attentive and incredibly helpful, and our entire experience was a dream come true. RUN4RHINOS FUN RUN This incredible initiative was created by the veterinary science students of Onderstepoort, in order to raise money to help rhino’s in our country. Runners can expect a fun day out for the family – including the four-legged members, but they’re required to be on a leash. Participate in a fun 5kn run, or a slightly more challenging 10km run and then spend the day soaking up the sun. It’s for a very good cause after all! #PUMPFORPEACE Music and sport come together for charity with these spectacular events! Headlining the Pretoria outdoor concert are firm favourites The Parlotones and Karen Zoid, as well as a host of other talented artists. The #pumpforpeace events were originally launched in Lesotho, and all proceeds from each concert will support the revival of music and sport initiatives and charities in disadvantaged communities, as well as the construction of new pump tracks – which are looping, exhilarating tracks for cyclists of all ages. IT’S IN THE CRUST ant to know how to tell if a pizza is really, really good? It’s all about the texture of the pizza base, and Toni’s Pizzeria passes the test with flying colours!
Located in the suburb of Rietfontein, one of Pretoria’s older areas, the restaurant was once a residential home. It’s now been converted into a warm and inviting eatery, making it a home-awayfrom-home for groups of friends and families who want to take a night off from cooking.
Toni’s only uses the best in Italian ingredients, including specialty meats like prosciutto and coppa, to serve mouth-watering meals. Our favourite pizza is the Salmone e Fragola… topped with crème fraiche, smoked salmon, sour cream and chives, strawberries, rocket, mint, caviar and lemon – it’s a taste revolution. All the standard pastas and pizzas are available – and delicious! However, it’s the gems found lower down on the menu that really have the wow factor. For example, the Coscia D’angnello comes with a roast leg of lamb, yoghurt, feta, olives, mozzarella and coriander.

The Salsiccia Piccante’s topping consists of cherry tomatoes, chorizo, grana padano, anchovies, olive oil and basil. Is your mouth watering yet? A visit to the Kingdom of Morocco turned owners Joehan and Louise Erasmus on to the magical culture of this desert land, and they returned home laden with beautiful objects and handcrafts. Clearly, they’re living their passion, as they’ve completely transformed a house into an authentic Moroccan venue, store, cafe and guest house. Prepare to be dazzled as you enter the restaurant through La Riad, their conservatory venue which can be transformed into an enchanted space for weddings and private functions. The next floor up is the showroom - stocked with tagines, the traditional Moroccan earthenware pot, gifts, flamboyant handcrafts, scarves, lights and all things Moroccan! The owners did extensive additions to the original house to create this alluring wonderworld of Morrocan patterns and designs. The entire venue is a labour of love. Reminiscent of a Marrakech rooftop, the cafe and deli sits at the top of the building. The attention to detail doesn’t stop with the décor - the extensive menu is packed with every conceivable Moroccan delicacy and spice… and you’re going to love it. We ordered the perfectly prepared Tomato Lamb Tagine to share. Served with couscous, saffron and cinnamon and cooked in a tomato concasse, it is a flavour extravaganza.On display is a mouth-watering range of Moroccan sweets and desserts, all delicately prepared with exotic ingredients like coconut syrup, mint syrup, caramelised almond topping, Turkish Delight, rosewater, dates, kumquat and saffron. We’ll certainly be returning for the Sheklat Malika Chocolate Queen, which is described as ‘a decadent rich chocolate tart with nuts, dried cranberries, spices and a hint of chilli served with rose flavoured whipped cream.’ Well… there goes the diet.

he exceptionally talented chefs at Afro-Boer have ingeniously reinvented time-honoured traditional dishes for the modern age. If you’re anything like us, you’re going to love them.
You’d be hard pressed to find a restaurant that serves a range of cakes – and a selection of quirky artisanal beers! Introducing Afro-Boer. Situated in a grand restored home with a voluminous ‘stoep’ and glorious kid-friendly garden, Afro-Boer is far more refined than its name suggests. The ambience reflects the different influences that make up Pretoria culture, and nothing expresses this fusion like their range of rooibos beverages. You can even enjoy Kooktee, which is traditionally found in old farm kitchens, simmering away on the coal stove. There’s an assortment of delicious cakes on display that can be paired with the restaurant’s amazing coffees. They specialise in unique coffees that you won’t find anywhere else; like Moerkoffie - an espresso sweetened with condensed milk and capped with foam. The Pour-Over presents freshly ground coffee beans in a drip filter, using a slow pour-over hot-water method. However, this one takes the cake; the Créme Brulée Latté, featuring espresso poured over home-made custard. Divine! We’re fans of the Eggs Benedict, but if you’re looking for a more authentic experience, the kaings and pap will satisfy you. It’s an Afrikaner dish of fried pork or sheep’s fat, served with whipped moskonfyt flavoured on putu pap. Tradition meets sophistication in fusion dishes like the Biltong Carpaccio Flatbread and Frikkadel Braai Brood. The delicious journey doesn’t have to end there… Afro-Boer bakes cakes for special occasions, as well as quiches and pies that can be taken home. They can hardly keep up with the demand for their hand-made ciabatta rolls, whole wheat loaves, farm milk loaves, English muffins, and sourdough loaves. “Ek en Julius het in Januarie 1992 in Kaapstad ontmoet toe ek nog ’n jong leerling-haarkapper in ’n klein salonnetjie was. Julius was ’n brandarm verkoopsman, maar ek was onmiddellik ontsettend aangetrokke tot hom,” onthou Hannon.

Hy het nou eenmaal ’n slag om mense se aandag vas te vang en boonop is die kamera mal oor hom. “Terwyl ons begin werkwinkels doen het, het ons agtergekom watter groot behoefte daar aan ordentlike salonprodukte teen redelike pryse is,” sê Julius. Hulle het hul eie haarprodukte begin verpak en Hannon het letterlik van salon tot salon en van die een dames-teegeselligheid na die ander gegaan en sy produkte begin bemark.
“Behandel mense met respek, moenie bang wees om te gee nie, en maak die beste van elke dag. Hulle besef die waarde van hul personeel en stel kundiges aan om spesialis werk te doen. Terwyl Hannon die kreatiewe gees en Julius die finansieële en bemarkings guru is, is Annemarie weer verantwoordelik vir die operasionele uitbreiding van HANNON en verseker dat die kwaliteit van die HANNON handelsmerk ten alle tye gehandhaaf word.

Some people believe that when your photograph is taken, so is part of your soul. The idea of a photographic image as a trace of the subject matter, and the site of memory is not a new one. Schönfeldt's installation is inspired by photographs, as well as archival documents and includes various versions of coats of arms, etchings and art works. All of this spans an incredible eight generations of ancestry. As you walk through the installation, you’ll be surprised with every turn. There’s so much to see, you may want to take a few hours and fully enjoy the whole thing.
The Sasol New Signatures Art Competition Exhibition Now in its 28th year, the annual Sasol New Signatures Art Competition has collaborated with the Association of Arts Pretoria. It is the longest running art competition on South Africa and works as an incredible platform for emerging artists to promote themselves, and their work, to the art-loving public. The winner of last year’s competition, Zyma Amien will host her first solo exhibition during this exhibition, so it’s a definite must-see! An exhibition of the winning works will be held from 31 August to 8 October at the Pretoria Art Museum, corner of Francis Baard and Wessels Street, Arcadia Park, Pretoria.

ho knew there was such a stunning place, so close to Pretoria… and Joburg? The incredibly lucky residents in the Crocodile River Reserve smile, because they know that this will be one of the first things visitors say when they bask in the glory of the sweeping grasslands, koppies and mountains of the Reserve.
Picture this… greenery as far as the eye can see, butterflies flit from flower to flower and birds swoop from the trees. It’s the picture of serenity. The air is the same (obviously) but it will feel like the cleanest, freshest air that has ever entered your lungs. Three of Gauteng’s major rivers the Jukskei, the Crocodile and the Hennops - all weave through the Reserve, before merging together to flow on to Hartbeespoort Dam. Nature abounds in the Crocodile River Reserve, it’s an environmentalists' dream come true. Love bird watching? There are almost 300 species that call the Reserve home, including the Blacksmith Plover, Barn Owl, Blackcollared Barbet and African Finfoot. There are more species of indigenous trees in this reserve than there in the whole of the United Kingdom – which is saying something! The lush green

landscape is only amplified by the gorgeous pops of colour created by the various wildflowers that grow in abundance. These make perfect homes for scorpions, spiders, butterflies and various other goggas that scurry between the rocks.

Join the annual geology walk – because Geology rocks! These excursions are perfect for curious children. Every now and then, there are talks from an expert. Usually there photographs to bring the topic alive, and sometimes there are even experiments and demonstrations. Just keep an eye on the Reserve’s website to find out when the next ones are taking place.
Efforts to conserve this 10000ha area started in 1987, with the creation of the Kareebosrand Conservancy, which then expanded into the Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy during the 1990’s. As urban development moved ever closer, residents decided that a formally proclaimed nature reserve would be the best way to conserve and protect the magnificent natural assets of the region. If you haven’t paid this magnificent spot a visit, we highly recommend that you do – soon!

Food wise – expect head chef Ross to wow your palette with amazing, and hearty fare such as traditional kroketten and bitterballen, to moules escargots and kriek braised pork belly. The menu is warm, hearty and diverse. We recently hosted one of our exclusive Hello Recommends events at this fine spot. We were blown away by the fantastic service, and the delicious food that appeared out of a very small kitchen. The passion that flowed from both owners as they chatted and shared their story with our guests was inspiring. Hint – make sure to try the Delirium Red and The Delirium Tremens beer. They’re unique in flavour, easy to drink and certainly provided quite the talking point at our table. The Belgian Triple is open 7 days a week, but do check the website for exact times.

Tell us about your new album Truth, Lies & Boys My EP is about just that - truth, lies and boys! I wanted to share music that was honest and relatable. The element of truth comes from that. Some of the songs are about some experiences with boys in my life (romance and friendship), so I felt that this title was a perfect description of what the EP holds in three simple words. Where does your inspiration come from? As cheesy as it sounds, my experiences inspire my music. Experiences with those around me, my relationships and the things I feel deeply about sharing. I believe that to be authentic, I need to write about what I truly feel, and have the confidence to express it. Which two women (dead or alive) inspire you, and why? My mother and Barbra Streisand. My mother is the strongest and most giving woman that I’ve ever met. Her love as a mother inspires me, and has always been the reason why I believe in human connection. Barbra Streisand is so incredibly talented and poised! I adore her, and look up to her as an artist. Where is your favourite place to hang out in Pretoria? Industrial Coffee Works.
