e’ve been dreaming of a white festive season. If the white runs out, we’ll pop open some red.

Now that our priorities are sorted, it’s onto the second most important thing. ‘Tis the season to be jolly well fed, isn’t it? So why not indulge at Kream in Brooklyn? It’s our restaurant of the month for a reason… it’s a gorgeous space and the food is quite simply marvelous. Gourmet sushi, vegetarian risotto, Cajun Pan-fried Hake and even a rainbow Candy Crush dessert… your tummy will be overjoyed with the selection. While many of you will be jetting off on sunbaked vacations with your families, some of you may be staying home for the festive season. And there’s nothing wrong with that! If you’re a regular reader of this mag, you’ll know that there’s absolutely no place I’d rather be for Christmas than right here, at home. The weather is amazing, the streets are quiet

2

and every single soul in town is wearing a smile. If you’re staying put over the holiday season, then have we got a treat for you! This month’s mag is filled with fun… we’ve found an amazing flower market, a Greek eatery with a twist, some nature for you to soak in, and so much more. You certainly won’t run out of things to keep the boredom at bay when you have this issue tucked away in your bag. Whatever your plans are for the holiday season, I sincerely hope they bring a smile to your face. I hope you spend it with people you love, doing things you enjoy, and eating the very best food you can find. Indulge, take it easy and unwind. Jingle all the way, readers! Nobody likes a half-assed jingler.

o you remember a time where News Café wasn’t around? No, neither do we. This vibey hotspot has remained a constant on the nightlife scene – and for good reason. And that reason just got a whole lot better, because the iconic brand is unveiling a fresh look and feel with their restaurant at the new Mall @ 55. Firstly, we’ve got to mention it’s a big year for the brand, who is celebrating its 22nd anniversary. Secondly, the branch at Mall @ 55 is News Café’s biggest store to date, making it the perfect venue for large events, parties and a general, whopping good time in this fastdeveloping node of Centurion.

6

The brand is heading towards a

more cosmopolitan and urban visual direction, but the changes are subtle… crisp, cool, elegant. The new branch at Mall @ 55 has subtler blue tones, and they’ve introduced the brand’s hero colour – black. These changes aim to reflect a timeless, elegant identity for the multiple award-winning franchise. The lighting fixtures, bar and overall aesthetic showcase the sleek interpretations of the upmarket ambience everyone expects from News Cafe. Take a seat outside and indulge in some people watching while you dine, or select a booth inside and marvel at the spectacular views offered by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The venue is spacious, and the bar is a masterpiece in its own right. With a smooth granite top and flashy amber lighting, this bar was literally made to serve you smooth, refreshing beverages. Our favourite things about this smashing

new branch is the incredible wall art behind the bar (it will gaze deeply into your soul) and the eye-catching ‘wave wall’ made out of flexible wooden panels. It’s edgy and on trend – just like News Café is, and always has been. The look may have changed but one thing hasn’t – the vibe. The perfect combination of a coffee bar, cocktail bar, restaurant and an entertainment venue, News Café has it all. Good service, tasty food, absolutely divine cocktails and an entertainment aspect that will keep you heading back weekend, after weekend. laude Monet once said, ‘I must have flowers, always and always’, and it seems we can’t agree with the artist any more. Epitomes of joy, flowers have many different meanings, and are always bound to bring a smile to someone’s face. In the Equestria area of Pretoria, situated next to a thriving garden nursery, as well as a quaint farm stall, you’ll find the Roots Flower Market.

This flower shop adds an innovative and artistic touch to their designs, and is bound to have whatever you’re looking for. From Proteas and sunflowers, to lilies and more; Roots Flower Market receives fresh flowers three times a week, and ensures

they’re well looked after in their cool room. Able to cater for all your floral needs and any event, you can even order customised flower crowns – perfect for the all glamorous summer parties! Future brides will also be happy to know that they sell dried and fresh flower petals to use as confetti. A little birdie also told us a cute coffee shop will be opening next to the store! A great cup of coffee and some beautiful blooms, what more could a girl ask for? We can’t wait to pop in when it opens - plus we know their tables will have great flowers as décor. Whether you’re looking for flowers for a bridal shower, a corporate event, a birthday, or just to spoil yourself (which is always something we encourage!), you’ll know where we’ll be looking. The team at Toula’s has also switched up their menu. They’ve added a mix of traditional Greek dishes with a fusion of modern, freshly thought of Greek dishes. This restaurant is a great place to meet with friends or have a Sunday lunch with the family, it even has a great play area for the little ones. Toula’s is all about sharing! Instead of main meals, they offer mezedes. The idea is to order different dishes to place in the middle of the table, and everyone tastes everything. You can’t go to Toula’s and not begin your dining experience with some pita breads and their delicious dips. Our personal favourite is the Taramasalata. After warming up your taste buds, choose between vegetarian, seafood, meat and kota (chicken) mezedes, as well as a variety of salads and delicious sides to accompany your mezedes. Followed by some Halva ice-cream, or perhaps some classic baklava, and we guarantee that you’ll leave with a fully tummy and a smile on your face!

dining out KREAM Located in Brooklyn, Pretoria, Kream is a trendy, upmarket restaurant which strives to provide the best food and service. These are the aspects they bring together to create an unforgettable dining experience. Now celebrating 10 years (which is pretty impressive for a restaurant these days), owner Tufan Yerebakan has established and developed Kream in to a trendy, one-of-akind experience for many. Serving delicious modern cuisine in an artistic environment, this venue combines the two to provide a great sensory experience.

12

Let’s start with the art, shall we? The walls are bedecked with beautiful art pieces that we’re sure belong in some important collections. From paintings, to a bronze sculpture standing under a waterfall (with real water, might we add!), there’s

so much to look at. You’d be forgiven if you didn’t make much conversation during your meal.

We were super impressed with the personalised service, the attention to detail – not to mention the beautifully plated dishes! Kream was certainly an unforgettable fine-dining experience… excellence from start to finish. Fish prepared to perfection, fresh cuts of meat, and beautifully presented plates just add to the ambiance and experience. The restaurant’s setting provides private dining, closed booths, and terrace seating options utilised by many clients for their business and leisure needs. The upstairs glass walled room provides not only exclusivity, but also a great view of the downstairs area. Kream offers a wide array of wines from all over the world – a handpicked selection of only the best wines from only the best estate, in a rather impressive cellar located in the entrance hallway. Poison

OF THE MONTH Tullamore D.E.W. Triple Distilled Whisky

Mid 1800’s

AGE OF WHISKY:

Due to it being a blend, it can be anywhere between 4 to 7 years. HISTORY OF THE BRAND: Tullamore D.E.W.

is named after Daniel E. Williams, the man who decided true craft could only come from true character, and insisted that his whiskey was made accordingly. The original Tullamore distillery opened its doors in 1829 in the heart of Tullamore town. Tullamore D.E.W. is the original triple distilled, triple blend whiskey, known the world over for its smooth and gentle complexity.

W

BEST COCKTAIL:

Apple D.E.W. Simple and refreshing! In a tall, ice-filled glass, pour 50ml of Tullamore D.E.W. Then top up with pressed apple juice, and garnish with a lemon wedge. Enhance the baked apple flavour by adding a dash of Angustora bitters.

Hello Pretoria • December 2017 • Hellopretoria.co.za

FLAVOURS: An early floral yet biscuit flavour, with soft spicy notes and a citrus flavour. Then you’ll notice a nutty or even marzipan note, combined with distinctive vanilla in the finish. NOSE: Light, sweet citrus and green apple combined with vanilla undertones. TASTE: Early fresh fruit leads to a definite light spike, followed by toasted wood and a vanilla sweetness.

Compiled by John Quinn & Victoria Taylor

HOW IT’S MADE: The state-of-art distillery only uses three varieties of grain distillations, and three different types of maturation casks. It’s made with grain, water and yeast, and is triple distilled to produce exceptional smoothness, triple blended with golden grain, full-flavoured malt, and rich pot still for greater complexity and Irish true character. The it’s triple cask matured in three cask types - traditional refill, ex-bourbon and exsherry, to create depth and a balance of flavour.

e’ve been told we need to drink more water… so we decided to add ice to the whisky. Don’t judge us, not only is it delicious, it can be drunk while you’re on your diet because it has no carbs. We’ll cheers to that!

A LITTLE R&R

N

for the whole family!

estled in the Magalies Mountains is a sanctuary for families. Yes, you read that right – the perfect family vacation has been discovered. You can thank us later, because right now, you should be booking yourself into the Protea Hotel Hunters Rest in Rustenburg…

Not only is the drive gorgeous, it’s also just over an hour and half from Pretoria, making it the ultimate vacation destination. Not too far from home, but far enough to make you feel like you’re on an actual holiday. While the hotel is currently branded as a Marriot/Protea Hotel, it’s owned by Fortis Hotels, who are in the process of launching their own brand. Protea Hotel Hunters Rest will then be rebranded as Fortis Hotel Hunters Rest.

24

The location is simply breathtaking; expect a horizon of green with

dramatic splashes of purple – the Jacarandas are dense here, and we absolutely adored it! As you arrive, you’ll drive passed the sprawling nine-hole 18 tee golf course (that’s dad sorted!), mini sports green and putt-putt course (that’s the little ones sorted… for an hour!). After giving you a full breakdown of the activities available onsite, the friendly, knowledgeable staff will direct you to your home away from home. Protea Hotel Hunters Rest has a total of 98 en-suite bedrooms and family suites to ensure that everyone sticks together. Each room has a

balcony with one of those amazing views we mentioned earlier, as well as the usual facilities, including air-conditioning, a coffee and tea station, DStv, hairdryers and free Wifi. Now this, we loved - the hotel has Wifi boosters throughout the premises, so you’ll have a proper connection no matter where you are! That’s a big tick in our books, because there were so many picture-perfect spots. The rooms are more like little chalets, but they share connecting walls, and some even have interleading doors. Each one is spacious and cozy, with separate

there’s also a nature reserve with hiking and biking trails, and a volleyball and tennis court. Not to mention all the activities nearby, including malls, Olifants Dam, Hartebeesport Dam and Sun City.

The hotel’s on-site farm-to-table George Wellington restaurant serves up some seriously scrumptious grub. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner – we know, the little ones are always hungry! Expect a selection of fresh fruits and juices, cold meats, freshly made curries and roasts, and even hake cooked in custard. Yes, we tried it and, yes, although a bit strange, it was divine!

Did we mention the Hunters Rest Health & Beauty Spa? Tucked away on the grounds is this magical house of pampering, where you can spend hours getting plucked, preened, and rubbed down. From manicures and body wraps to full body massages with hot stones and waxes… you’re going to love every moment. There are couples’ packages available, and there’s even a kiddies menu – yes, that’s right! You and your little ones can have an entire pamper party, complete with chocolate face masks and manis.

There’s no time for boredom here; Protea Hotel Hunters Rest has thought of absolutely everything. For the children, there’s a baby pool, both a heated and cold swimming pool, a putt-putt course, an indoor and outdoor playground, a farmyard complete with pony rides, and the option of renting bicycles. In addition to all this,

lounge areas, and the most adequate wardrobe space we’ve ever seen. The entire hotel is a nonsmoking hotel, but it does provide ashtrays on the patio, should the craving hit.

If a fun filled family vacation is what you’re after, then we highly recommend that you check yourself (and your brood) into the Protea Hotel Hunters Rest. You will not regret it!

7Garth minutesTaylor with

At the age of 7, he received his first guitar and taught himself how to play. At 9 years old, his mom taught him his first chords on the piano… and now, Garth Taylor is coming up on 20 spectacular years in the music industry. Obviously, we had to catch up with him, and find out how he intends to spend the festive season… You’re about to reach 20 years in the music industry. How does that make you feel? It makes you feel old, to be honest! But luckily, I started out very young so I’m not that old, haha! It makes me feel accomplished and successful, because that's all I’ve been doing the last 20 years. I think I had a good run at it thus far, and many more to come. What are your music plans for 2018? It would be to write and release more singles. I’m hoping to release a full album and call it ‘20’. I’m also looking at touring more. What inspires your music the most? People around me have inspired me; seeing all types of relationships around me. For example, mother and son, boyfriend and girlfriend. I can sit for hours watching, and listening to people's stories that truly inspire me. I love stories! What’s the most difficult part of song-writing? Putting my ideas into words. Often you know what you want to say, it's just… how do you say it? What are your plans for the festive season? Definitely to do as little as possible! As musicians, we’re generally crazy busy performing around this time. This time round I’ve decided to relax. What is your favourite thing about the festive season? The general mood… people are more relaxed and friendly.

Any New Year’s plans? I want to relax, pretty much the same as my festive season plan. I've always travelled, but this year I want to enter the new year quietly and with reflection.

Your number one New Year’s resolution for 2018 is… Not to have a resolution. Where’s your favourite place to eat in Jozi? I like to eat at home. I'm always on the go and traveling, so it’s always nice to have home cooked meals.

Words Victoria Taylor

What’s your favourite thing about Joburg during the festive season? There’s no one around and there’s no traffic!
