Now, don’t judge a book by its cover… this magazine may be small (for the moment), but it’s absolutely jam-packed with delicious eateries, must-see shops, theatre shows and so much more. Firstly, I’ve got to congratulate our cover star – Nataniël is celebrating an incredible 30 years in the entertainment industry, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Not that we would ever want him to! Remember when he starred alongside the legendary Chef, Gordon Ramsey in those chuckle-worthy Checker’s ads? He’s also published numerous books, staged more than 70 original theatre productions, is an ambassador for Child Welfare SA and heads his own charitable foundation, The Nataniël Progress Project. I’d like to thank him for keeping his die-hard fans thoroughly entertained, and wish him 30 more successful years in the business. Now flip over to our cover story to get the full scoop on his awesome new show!
Speaking of shows, our Arts & Culture section has an amazing exhibition you simply must see… It’s all about how you, the viewer of art, see the piece, and how you interpret it. To dub this exhibition as ‘interesting’ isn’t giving it enough credit – it’s mind-boggling! For those of you who aren’t into the art scene, and are a little more country, the Rockwood Theatre is hosting a fantastic tribute to country, folk and acoustic rock singers. The show has a stellar line-up… think Vernon Barnard from The Voice, Nadine Sisam, Kieran Rennie, Stephan Nel, Candice Kennedy and many more. It’ll be fun for the whole family. Our calendar is overflowing, our first Restaurant of the Month is a local favourite and our Leisure Activities section is fun personified! You’re going to love this little magazine… trust me!

shwane’s renowned singing celebrity chef, Fortunato Mazzone - AKA Forti, has just opened the first restaurant to have his namesake! Forti Grill and Bar is one of the hottest spots to open in Time Square, Menlyn and we can see why…
Situated on the upper tier of the buzzing casino complex, this spot offers diners spectacular views of the area, and the other latest hotspot in the area – Menlyn Maine. However, it’s the venue itself that will captivated you. Forti’s has a gorgeous, luxuriously appointed dining room and a state-of-the-art showpiece kitchen that gives guests a full view of all the delicious action. Did we mention the pasta bar, where fresh pasta is made in real time for customers who want to watch the show?

You can expect classic fresh pasta’s like creamy Penne Arrabiata, beef and vegetarian ravioli and steaming hot lasagna. There’s also a few new treats including a ton of Vegan friendly foods (think roasted potato Villa Murat), Duck Confit Alla Tito and even old school Crayfish Thermidor. Not to mention the 5-course gastronomic tasting menu, the 9-course ultra tasting menu and the Italian feast. Mamma mia, that’s a lot of food! And we’re going to try it all… mwa-ha-ha

HARD ON HUNGER! You can’t rock out on an empty stomach
S
itting in the newest addition to the Hard Rock Cafe stable at Menlyn Park in Pretoria, we remember the opening of the Joburg branch, a few decades ago. That HRC became a huge hit with lovers of rock ‘n roll, serving memorable burgers and good sounds in equal measure. The word legendary comes to mind... The Hard Rock Cafe began as a burger joint in London in 1971, serving downand-dirty American cuisine and decking out the place in music memorabilia The recipe for success has since been exported all over the world, finally arriving in Pretoria! The vibe’s attracted a loyal band of rock ‘n roll Pretorianers who have made this their after-work hangout. They’re already on first-name terms with the super-friendly duty managers and servers - it’s just that kind of place.
Words Andrea Vinassa
If you go early, you can catch the mellow crowd and unwind a bit before you head home to reality. The music isn’t too loud, but as the evening heats up, so do the decibels. The later the louder – definitely a nostalgia fest for those who listened to music when music was still music.
Lovers of rock will appreciate that because HRC doesn’t believe in ‘background music.’ You might even get a glimpse of Jon Bon Jovi’s guitar through a glass cabinet! The familiar logo is welcoming and there’s always something going on... Tuesday is
quiz night, resident DJ's rock out on Friday
nights and the venue often hosts open mic nights and live local talent throughout the week. Even if you’re pathologically funresistant, you won’t be able to resist the persuasiveness of the MC.
If it’s good for vegetarians, it’s definitely a carnivore’s paradise. The Hickory Barbeque Bacon Burger comes with a generous handmade patty grilled to perfection, accompanied by smokey bacon, a hint of caramelised onion and softly melted cheese – all that between two buns. Prepare yourself for a surprisingly subtle, impeccably balanced flavour sensation. This one scores high on the ‘repeat business’ scale. Memorable indeed.
The regulars report that the food is consistently spectacular. This place specialises in delivering juicy burgers with scrumptious sauces served on the side, and the fries are sublime. This is not a term usually associated with chips, but these delectable potatoes are out of this world! Vegetarians will appreciate the presence of a decent burger on the menu. What would a vegetarian be doing in a burger joint, you ask? Would it surprise you to know that Annie Lennox, Bryan Adams, Alan Wilder from Depeche Mode, Bob Dylan, Billy Idol and Chris Novoselic from Nirvana are all vegetarians? Got to have something on the menu for them, right? The Veggie Leggie (as in legendary) Burger comes with a tasty patty mix of chickpeas and carrot topped with grilled zucchini, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, red onion and vine-ripened tomatoes. The well-proportioned burger is truly delicious and hardly leaves room for dessert. Excellent value at R109.

This exhibition focuses particularly on the concept of visual literacy and the dialogue between artistic 'intention' and the viewers 'understanding' of art. Researchers found the average person spends just 17 seconds looking at an artwork in a gallery or museum. However, this exhibition argues that to understand an artwork, the viewer needs to slow down and take the time to see the art in the work. Understanding an artwork is a complex process. It’s an eye-opening, thought provoking exhibition.
THE NATIONAL CULTURAL HISTORY MUSEUM The National Cultural History Museum explores South Africa’s cultural diversity in various permanent and temporary exhibitions. Exhibitions include rock paintings and engravings

T
here are tons of things to do, see and try in any city, but at Hello Pretoria, we’re after the gems. We want to find the not so well-known spots, and it’s your lucky day, ‘cos we’re in the mood to share too! Capital Craft Beer Academy It’s easy to find a tipple in town, but if you’re looking for a beer education, that’s a totally different story. An establishment that specializes in food and beer pairing, Capital Craft Beer Academy is as much a restaurant as it is a beer university… and all-round cool, lifestyle hang-out spot. On a mission to promote the craft brewing industry in South Africa, Capital Craft Beer Academy has two outlets; one in Menlyn and one in Centurion, with mobile bars and their famed annual beer fest held at the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens. Acquaint yourself in a warm and friendly spot (all craft beer virgins welcome) with the world of barley, wheat and hops.
Camera Obscura – University of Pretoria So, this one may seem a little nerdy, but it’s one of those cool things that not many people know about. Although, now you do! Our description just won’t do it justice, so best you go see for yourself. Hidden away at Pretoria University is this Camera Obscura (precursor to the modern camera) – which offers an all-round view of the Jacaranda City. A Latin term meaning ‘dark room’, this is exactly what you’ll find. A dark room - with a pin-hole camera and other sophisticated instruments and lenses that the students on duty will explain. We’re smart but not that smart. Not open to the public, you need to call ahead and book (minimum of 5 people) for an opportunity to see the whole of Pretoria in turn, as you change the direction of the lenses. The best time to visit is in the morning, and on a clear day, to see to see the city center illuminated by the sunlight from the east.Entrance is free but be a sweetheart and donate to the Science Exhibit. 5 www.up.ac.za 1 012 420 3767

The Wonderboom From science to horticulture (we’re interesting like that), comes a unique attraction that HP only recently discovered for ourselves… a 1000-year-old fig tree, just north of the Magaliesburg Mountains in Pretoria, and now, a national monument. The Wonderboom stands 25 meters high and has a 5.5 diameter main trunk. It’s quite a sight, with its drooping branches and circle of new trunks around the original tree. The area around Wonderboom is now a nature reserve, which is a lekker spot for a picnic or braai with tons of picture opportunities, if you ask the dassies nicely. Wonderboom Nature Reserve also offers many hiking trails, including the Wonderboom Fort - one of four forts built around Pretoria for protection against the British. The fort now lies in ruins, but still provides breathtaking views over the city.

f you haven’t yet heard about Blos Café in Faerie Glen, we’re about to change your life. Not only does this gorgeous little café serve mouth-watering food, it’s also just opened a cozy Guest House. Blos Café is simply stunning – a refreshing mix of authentic Farmhouse and modern panel glass, timber interiors and retro vintage décor. Although they love dishing out, this spot isn’t only about food. There are so many options for venue
hire; intimate private rooms with Wi-Fi, banquet style areas, a cellar and private deck with outdoor fire place. There’s even a chapel – there’s nothing this venue can’t do! More recently, Blos Café opened the BLY Guest House on the same property. A luxury Bed & Breakfast that’s perfect for travelling business executives, tourists, brides and grooms and family fun. The property is surrounded by lush tree tops and natural vegetation, and it flows through to the rooms. Tree motifs line the walls, much of the furniture is wooden and there are gorgeous pops of greenery from many plants dotted throughout the space. The rooms are cosy, with warming fireplaces and faux-fur pillows laid on the
plush double beds. The love of nature is evident Blos Café firmly believes in minimal waste and use their offcuts to make organic compost. Whether you’re popping in for a bite, a night of lively entertainment and craft beer, or settling down for a weekend of conferencing and work, Blos Café and the new BLY Guest House is a slice of serenity in the big city.
