favorite… This boutique hotel is encapsulated amongst trees, spring blossoms and evergreen shrubs, and all nine exclusive suites blend beautifully with their contemporary, colonial and Moorish décor and design. It’s like stepping into a time machine, only with all the lavish extra-added amenities. One word best describes the scene and that is romantic. Its romance lies in the sequestered location and connection with nature. Emulating the allencompassing feeling, it celebrates love, connection, relaxation and the finer things in life.

Try this: Visit the restaurant and book a Cosmorganic menu adventure. Then await the magic carpet ride that the incredibly talented Chef Chantel Dartnall so effortlessly navigates. Order the Grande Degustation with wine pairing, and prepared to be swept off your feet. It’s an all-star lineup, beginning with the ‘Song of the Sea’ (salmon, Kombucha and Yuzu), and ending off with the belle of the ball ‘The Gift of Quetzalcoatl’ (chocolate heaven). From the delicate velvety textures of the salmon, to the local and European cheese selection, to the grand finale; the gift of love, the extra bitter blend of dark chocolate – it’s all heavenly and you’re sure to love every bite. Also visit the Tienie Pritchard Museum on site. It’s a rare privilege to view the unique pieces by sculptor Tienie Pritchard. Breakfast

Words Cassidy Taylor-Memmory

FOR HEROES! Healthy, nutritious and divine W ith the summer season in full swing, it’s time to let go of our comfort foods. Dreading it? You shouldn’t be, because the new Doppio Zero menu is making it easy! In fact, the nutritious selection of plates is so good, the Doppio Zero at Hazeldean Square centre is absolutely buzzing on a Sunday morning!

From cyclists treating themselves to a well-deserved breakfast, to families spending their Sunday mornings together, the new menu has something for everyone. A vibrant and trendy décor element greets you as you make your way to your table, passing the delicious

breads and confectioneries on the way. You’re welcomed with a colourful menu that encourages you to make the right choice.

With the inclusion of wholesome ingredients such as turmeric, matcha, acai powder, edamame beans and black rice, everyone is bound to find something delightful. You may end up trying something completely new! The new menu, which was put together by dietician Kelly Ansley, aims to be as tasty as possible, while delivering a healthy dose of nutritious value. And who doesn’t want some of that? For each day of the week, there’s a juice of the week which includes ingredients like ginger, carrot, apple, orange, turmeric and beetroot, among many others. If the idea of a full glass is a bit daunting, you can ask for a sample shot. You can also indulge in a power shot - designed to give your body a quick boost. Plus, a power shot is a bit easier to throw back

for those who aren’t big fans of freshly squeezed juices. With poke bowls being all the rage at the moment, Doppio Zero have created ones that are not only bright in terms of their nutritious ingredients, but are curated so all the flavours work well with each other. Our top pick would be the Salmon Poke bowl, which includes black rice and edamame beans, along with the ginger chilli cured Norwegian salmon and thin slices of pickled ginger. Absolutely delicious! Looking for your latte fix? They’ve got you sorted with turmeric, matcha or spiced rooibos lattes. Excuse us while we dash to Doppio Zero for a turmeric latte, which is a total golden hit! With refreshed décor, and a new menu which remains true to Plaka’s long-standing philosophy of modern traditional Greek faire, this place has got to go on your ‘must-try’ list of mouth-watering eateries. The menu includes traditional favourites like calamari, moussaka, kleftico, whole grilled linefish, prawns and lamb chops, as well as more contemporary dishes. Think honey-mustard pork fillet, and a delicious, fully-loaded fisherman’s pasta.

cover feature

Believe it or not, Plaka has been South Africa’s go-to Greek restaurant for almost 25 years, so they’ve got to be doing something exceptionally right! Now, the family owned restaurant chain has opened its new look store at the Menlyn Park Mall, and it’s an absolute treat, Hello Pretorians!

‘Plaka is the heart-beat of the Greece’s modern capital, and being on the Northern and Eastern slopes of the Acropolis, it’s also the old historical neighbourhood of Athens,’ says Angelo Haitas, founder and owner of Plaka. ‘It’s this tapestry of traditional culture within a modern society that we are bringing to Plaka in South Africa.’ The indulgent menu was designed around Plaka’s ethos of ‘eating together’, and includes ‘The Family Table’ - a selection of popular hearty meals, generously served with a variety of salads and side orders for family or friends to share… all whilst offering unbeatable value! We’ve got to mention the bottomless soda is a nice touch. What we love the most about this spectacular little spot is that each dish has a special dose of Greek magic to make it authentic and delicious. Meze means ‘small plates’ – think feta in phyllo pastry, grilled octopus, fresh olives, hot toasted pita, tzatziki, red pepper dip, Greek salad, and kebabs. Delish! Although they say ‘small plates’, they’re bigger than you think… Don’t be piggies like us, and go nuts ordering plate after plate after plate, only to realise that your eyes are far bigger than your tummies.

Street food we all know and love, such as yiros, souvlaki and toasted pitas are, of course, on offer for a quick meal on the go.

Words Supplied Images Supplied

Their heritage extends from the plates to the décor, which includes fresh blue mosaics, touches of bright bougainvillea, and soft wood finishes, which all form part of that authentic Greek theme and feel. Customers can also take home a small piece of Plaka! That’s right, there’s an in-store deli that sells many of the ingredients used at Plaka - cheese, olives, olive oil, pastas, home-made Greek biscuits and many other Greek delicacies. Were you on a diet? Guess you’re not anymore! iming to redefine the city’s fine-dining scene Fortunato Mazzone’s food philosophy shuns pretension. ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,’ and that’s what you’ll get at Forti Grill and Bar – sophistication. of an opera piece - just to make someone smile. Above and beyond and an immersive experience, there really is nothing quite like it. Above all Forti prides himself on his ‘happy kitchen.’ “You can taste the passion and happiness in my food” he says. His restaurant mirrors this philosophy. Although the venue is plastered with masterpieces by Forti’s favorite artist, Carinda Applegryn (available

for purchase at the restaurant), the menu is what shines most. Gastronomic delights await you... from the finest Australian Wagyu beef in the country to freshly prepared sole. Each ingredient is thought out, perfectly manicured to fit the plate and rewrites the rule book of what acceptable fresh food items truly are. Most dishes only comprise of five ingredients - again proving greatness in simplicity. For starters, try the simple Caesars salad; simple, fresh ingredients served with their homemade style dressing. For mains, order one of the freshly prepared pasta dishes, organic fresh fishplates, or one of the fine meat dishes. Whatever you do, don’t forget to order a side of the potato roasted in duck fat! There’s also an entire page on the menu dedicated to vegans. There’s an option of a five-course tasting menu, with wine pairing or without, and if you’re famished and adventurous, go for the nine course-tasting menu. Perhaps you’d like to opt in for experiential dining and book a spot at the chef ’s table and watch the master chefs in their natural habitat. Or maybe you’d like to take a slice of Forti’s home with you from the deli, which stocks Nick’s & Forti’s gorgeous wines, olive oils from Tulbagh, freshly baked breads and a butchery that serves the finest meats. Whatever your preference, whatever your heart desires, Forti’s delivers.

MONKEY TIME!

WHAT: You’ll probably wrap up at the market by 9:30am, with a whole day ahead - and possibly some hyper kids after all those koeksisters. What better way to let them wind down than by heading to The Pretoria Zoo. Situated on 85 pristine hectares in the heart of the Jacaranda City, the National Zoo offers animal lovers a staggering 9500 animals to view - mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.

DINNER AND A SHOW

WHAT: Hot, fresh vetkoek and pancakes at Boeremark market early on a Saturday morning? Um, yum! It’s where old school market meets all things ‘on fleek’, as the kids say. Good old hospitality, with all the traditional things you expect from a market - as well as a whole lot of niche goodies to buy and try that you might not see anywhere else.

WHAT: Get a babysitter and head out for a delicious dinner and an awesome show. For a little comedy, some drama or dance, check out what’s going on at anyone of these well-known and well-loved spots…

PS: There’s also the banting market on the first Saturday of every month. So worth a visit if you’re a medium fat, high protein kind of person. Next market is on 4 November.

T

he South African State Theatre has a whole host of exciting productions and shows up hidden behind its curtains for the month of November. Here are our top choices…

CLOCKING IN brings Miss Emmah Mabye’s first and recently published poetry collection to the stage in a powerful performance piece that we highly recommend you see – if it’s your sort of thing, that is. This production will embrace the journey of discovering mans tripartite being – this embraces the spirit, soul and body through poetry, music and video. It is an 8-year journey in total, starting with Emmah’s early days as a writer, progressing to where she stands now as a powerful performance poet. arts & culture

TIME TO DANCE… AM I FREE will be a powerful piece of interpretive dance that will explore the true meaning of the word ‘freedom’. It questions the inevitable responsibilities that come with this supposed freedom. Freedom in our country was hard earned, and yet people still lack the common understanding of what it truly means. This show will open your eyes and rock you to your core. You don’t want to miss it. WHEN: 29 November to 10 December TICKETS: R80 per person

FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ… Prepare for a performance full of soul as talented vocalist, Ncamisa Nqana takes the stage in A BIRD WITH MELODIES. It’s the story of a songbird from Mamelodi who expresses herself best through song. You’ll be taken on a journey through song, poetry, acting and dance in this incredible artistic package. Prepare to feel the emotion, feel the message as Ncamisa’s powerful vocals take hold, accompanied by a sextet, rhythm section and two saxophones. Three poets will also join in the fun! at Square Time Café

ith a pub-like setting, Square Time Café in Boardwalk, Pretoria is a local restaurant that always has a vibe going on - no matter what day of the week it is. Locals love it, and so will you!

There’s a whole page dedicated to all types of fun shooters, like the Harlem Globe Trotter, Picasso, Flat Liner and a lot more that require parental guidance.

However, it’s the cocktail specials and cold beers that really bring in the crowds – especially when there’s a rugby game going on! With a history of over 10 years in the serene surroundings of Boardwalk Square, Square Time Café is always guaranteed to be a good time with a group of friends. Not only do they deliver tasty meals and bring us refreshing drinks that quench our thirst, but the friendly waiters at Square Time Café always make us feel welcome. It’s like

we’re family – just another reason why we keep going back for more. That, and the fact that it’s quality food at affordable prices. Who can resist a deal like that? Did we mention the outdoor area? Perfectly suitable for those weekend sundowners. The upstairs enclosed patio and bar area always has a funky vibe going on. We think it’s time to join them on a Tuesday night for their quiz night, don’t you agree?

From sizzling steaks and creamy pastas, to flavourful chicken dishes, and perfectly prepared pizzas, there’s something for everyone, and the food never disappoints - no matter what you’ve ordered. repare to be transported to another era, where luxury and elegance are a lifestyle, and not a treat. Perfectly situated on the hillside in Waterkloof Ridge, Castello Di Monte will give you that delectable taste of Tuscany you’ve only ever dreamed of. This stunning five-star estate is surrounded by landscaped gardens bursting with olive trees and lavender bushes. Its natural beauty will catch your breath in your throat. All sixteenth century splendor enhanced by modern amenities. This is a place of serenity, and if you’re after that well-deserved break, then we highly recommend you book a night or two here.

here, thanks to the talented chefs who dish out the international cuisine. Did we mention that you order a wellness treatment that will take place in the luxurious comfort of your own room? Plus, the sauna and steam shower will melt your troubles away, while the outdoor Roman styled swimming pool is the ideal place to top up your tan while you sip on cocktails from the bar.

When you’re staring out at the spectacular views of the hills around the capital city, a glass of delicious vino in hand, you’ll forget where you are. In fact, we’ll forgive you for thinking you may stumbled across a secret paradise. Castello Di Monte is the perfect pinch of Italian flavour in our African landscape. The walls are covered in elegant art, and there are dramatic, sweeping granite stairways that will tempt you into descending them like a Tuscan princess. Never have you experienced such opulent surroundings.

Each gorgeous room has all the traditional ‘must-haves’; individual controlled satellite television, air-conditioning, underfloor heating, a stocked mini bar, free Wi-Fi, a personal safe, telephone and a coffee and tea station. However, it’s the Presidential and Honeymoon suites that will make you feel like absolute royalty. The Presidential suite has a magnificent separate shower room and bathroom, as well as a double volume walk in closet (internal squealing!) and a fireplace – perfect for those cozy nights in. The Honeymoon suite is decked out with an incredible oval bath – and a spa bath!

Castello Di Monte has seven intimate dining areas, and a menu that will make your mouth water. There’s no shortage of variety

Andisiwe Dweba

I

f the name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen it (and her) on Generations the Legacy. Did we mention she’s also a voice-over artist? When she’s not on the big screen, she’s lending a helping hand to the community.

What was it like growing up in the Eastern Cape? The coast is my favourite place to be, so growing up in the Eastern Cape was tranquil and peaceful. I had a happy childhood! What have you always wanted, and did you get it? I have always wanted to be on television and, yes now I’m on the biggest channel in Sub-Saharan Africa.

What’s the most amazing role you have ever had? I once played a high school bully. I hated bullies when I was back in school, so playing one made me confront and understand those type of people. They aren’t always bad, but they are troubled.

Tell us about the motivational speaking you do for schools… I’m very passionate about young people and peer pressure because I have two teenage brothers who look up to me and think the world of me! I share a lot of ideas with them and they always motivate me to give advice to others, which is why I do what I do. I also think being in the public eye, I have a platform of talking about important issues and have people listen, so we can educate and converse about important social issues.

What is your favourite outdoor pastime? Hiking, and long walks on the beach.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? Be fearless and fierce in chasing your dreams. T @SiweDweba @siwedweba
