The Japan-based designer brand, whose philosophy of ‘simplicity, nature and good quality’, is everything you could dream of. The best part? They update their products every seven days - giving you new goodies, at incredibly reasonable prices. We attended the launch, and to say that we shopped ‘til we dropped would be putting it mildly. Seriously Hello Pretorians, do yourselves a favour and check it out – your festive shopping has never been easier! Another must-try has got to be the gorgeous Cradle Restaurant, located at the Cradle Boutique Hotel in Lanseria. Who doesn’t love heading to the Cradle of Humankind? Go for the food, stay for the view! This place will take your breath away, and it’s totally worth the drive. Consider it a well-earned, day-time adventure. We highly recommend that you do the Malapa Fossil Tour – a guided tour that lets guests experience two famous fossil dig sites – magnificent. If you’re after a pamper session, then head to the gorgeous Moyen Skin & Wellness. From nails and massages, to hair removal, bronzing and even facials… this spot is luxury personified. lifestyle LEEatTEMPS DE DÎNER like one of those French girls! As you enter The Three Ducks or in French, Les Trois Canards, you’re welcomed by soft mood lighting and French finishing touches. The menu has traditional French fare, but there are burgers, pastas and other dishes suited to the local palate, prepared with the same French flair. Master chefs have been toiling in the kitchen for decades to make this a top French destination for discerning foodies – and they’ve succeeded! Go all-out and splurge if you’re celebrating, or enjoy bistro items that won’t break the bank. Either way, you’ll enjoy a divine evening

out. The wine list is comprehensive and we happily sipped on a bottle (or two, sshh!) of Graham Beck Waterside Chardonnay – a great choice for any meal. Starters had to be French – obviously, so we chose Escargot and the Bouillabaisse, a seafood soup with prawns, mussels and fish. Not the usual small portions that are characteristic of French cuisine, the starters were South African-sized and seasoned to perfection. Our ginger, garlic and peri-peri prawns, served with risotto, was a delicious fusion of flavours with

the prawns prepared perfectly. We also tried the kingklip, which was smothered in a melt-in-the-mouth sauce. The service is attentive, but not intrusive, and all the dishes are meticulously crafted by the experienced chef. The Three Ducks celebrates all things French – their breakfasts are affordable and have a special touch, with light meals served with crepes, croissants and baguettes. The restaurant is proudly dogfriendly in the pavement area, and dog lovers are invited for a coffee while walking the pooches. Bon appétit!

O

ur number one reason for being in love with Karoo Café? Their food philosophy. Karoo Café avidly supports living consciously, the use of honest ingredients and the creation of a sustainable community. For many South Africans, the Karoo is just a bleak landscape you have to get through on your way to Cape Town. However, for those who stop off in the farms and small towns that are dotted around the Karoo, the semi-arid region comes to represent the simple life. Farmers lavish hospitality on passers-by, and strangers become fast friends over a hearty meal.

Karoo Cafe serves boere cuisine… think Skilpadjies - lamb’s liver wrapped in ‘netvet’, served with a pap muffin and chakalaka. Delish! The lunch menu is packed with similarly authentic fare – roosterkoek served with fruit preserve and condensed milk, pumpkin fritters, Karoo lamb chops and lamb potjie. The oxtail slow-cooked in red wine and tomato, and the ostrich curry are two Karoo staples to satisfy even the most diehard of foodies. Decorated in an eclectic yet homely style, this venue is the ideal place to kick back and enjoy an ice-cold craft beer. It pairs well with the gourmet Karoo lamb burger, served with caramelised onion, potato wedges and mayonnaise. Fresh ingredients are supplied by a handpicked group of food organic growers, boutique producers and small farmers, while foodie factory Gudgu supplies old-school cordials, pink lemonade and ginger beer. KAROO KIND OF

The unique Karoo Café, as well as the other artisanal enterprises on the property, is a little taste of the Karoo in urban Pretoria. It’s a great place to take the kids on a Saturday morning, but there is a child policy. While the staff regard ‘all children as little angels’, they do ask parents to keep little ones’ quiet and seated at the table – or at the very least, to keep a close eye on them. The venue has open water features, many stairs and hot fireplaces which you’ll have to watch out for.

Pretoria’s artisanal food producers demonstrate their creativity and passion through their stalls and food trucks – and the excellent quality of their produce. A festive ambience is created with rows of bunting hanging between the trees and

This is the first time a cultural event of this scale will be hosted in Africa, and having South Africa as the host nation is the highest honor. The City is eagerly gearing up for the arrival of nearly 30,000 singers, that will represent 70 countries around the world as they participate in the eleven-day competition. They are sure to have many unique, memorable experiences and cultural encounters as they’re submerged in the warm hospitality of Africa.

The World Choir Games is the world’s largest choral competition and was hosted for the first time in Linz, Austria in 2000. Next year, this magnificent competition will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in the glorious Jacaranda City. It’s the perfect location (we think) because the City of Tshwane is a dynamic meeting place that truly reflects the essence of South Africa.

All amateur choirs of the world are invited to participate in the event, as there are numerous participation options to consider. The Champions Competition is for choirs with international competitive experience or comparable credentials. The Open Competition is there to give choirs the opportunity to gather valuable experience from an international competition. The Non-competitive evaluation is for those who don’t want to compete, but wish to be part of the international event. Here, a panel of international experts will provide an evaluation of your 15-minute programme, and discuss the outcome with the choir in an open, amicable atmosphere. The Individual Coaching sessions allow choir participants to perform in a session alongside a choral music expert, who will rehearse a selected piece with the choir, to provide new artistic ideas and impetus. The Friendship concerts are a collaboration with other choirs in various public venues the city of Tshwane and South Africa. These public concerts give each choir the chance to present their musical traditions and costumes of their native land to enthusiastic locals. The World Festival Singers are a unique combination of a massed choir consisting of 1000 singers that will perform during the Closing Ceremony of the event. A number of folk songs from all continents will be performed, as well as popular songs, and traditionally the ‘Jazz Hallelujah’ and ‘We are the World’, which will get the audience involved, ensuring they never forget this brilliant event.

In addition to this, there will be a series of workshops, seminars and open rehearsal sessions on offer. During these, choirs, conductors and individuals will be introduced to international choral literature, singing styles, and performance practices and have the chance to mix with other singers, get instructions from renowned experts and perform together. Lastly, the Special Conductors Programme aims to expose the conductor to the world of international competitions and events. This will include an introduction to the World Choir Games concept, network opportunities with conductors and choirs from around the world, rehearsals of the World Festival Singers where applicable, workshops and special discussions with the world class jurors.

spree! H

Mi-so-excited!

ello Pretorians, you’re dreams have come true! Japanese fashion and beauty retail giant, Miniso have just opened their second store in South Africa, and it’s perfectly located in Menlyn Park Shopping Centre. We’re not joking when we say we adore everything about this spot! The store is spacious and squeaky clean, but the best part is that it’s absolutely jam-packed with goodies! There’s a little something for pretty much everyone at Miniso… think beauty products like compact mirrors and cosmetics, bags, purses, gorgeous little home décor items like vases, mugs and ceramic frying pans, as well as sunglasses, adorable stuffed animals that your little ones will love, and tons (and tons!) of gorgeous jewellery. It was a serious shopping extravaganza at the launch, which happened on a gloriously sunny Saturday morning. The lavish event was hosted by the lovely Pearl Thusi and tons of local celebrities, including Tamara Dey were in attendance, eager to fill their baskets with fun. Miniso has over 200 stores in more than 50 countries, and word on the street is that there are plans to open another 50 stores across South Africa. Whoop! What we love about this brand is that Miniso update their product offering every week. A BIT OF BUSH

I

Bistro

We have your next weekend outing sorted!

t all starts with a visit to the Cradle Restaurant but, trust us… you’ll want to stay long after your meal has ended. That’s because this magnificent destination is about much more than the food. It’s an entire experience, which starts the minute you leave the urban fringe. You’re only a few kilometres away from Africa’s busiest hubs, but the change in scenery will make you feel as if you’re in another country – and you’ll notice the calming effect on your stress levels immediately.

international flair. Think grilled lemon and rosemary lamb chops served with a dollop of creamy tzatziki, Mozambican-style chicken accompanied by grilled chorizo, or a hearty Moroccan-inspired lamb shank. Health-conscious diners also have delish banting-style choices.

You’ll be stunned by the venue, thanks to the landscape… from the veranda of the magnificent stone, glass and steel restaurant, you can see nothing but bush, right up to the horizon. The view is nothing short of stupendous, but why leave it as a view when you can go exploring? The Cradle offers two-hour morning and afternoon game drives, but you can also go for a guided walk. Keep an eye out for game - the reserve, which plays host to the hotel, is home to leopard, brown hyena and several antelope.

The breakfast menu is a blend of traditional and local favourites… the Farmer’s Breakfast dishes up bacon and boerewors with tomato smoor. You could also go for shakshouka; a spicy stew of tomatoes and peppers, forming a tongue-tingling nest for poached egg, or try an Italian omelette loaded with mozzarella and basil.

For people who aren’t overly fond of game viewing, the restaurant offers a guided fossil tour, which incorporates visits to two dig sites. There’s plenty to keep you occupied if you’ve decided to make a day of it, but since the restaurant is so close, you could easily come for lunch (or breakfast), and be back in time to catch the rugby!

12

You won’t be disappointed. The Cradle’s food philosophy reflects its bush setting, while giving a nod to contemporary bistro trend. Choose from starters like creamy biltong soup or venison carpaccio, and mains with distinct

Final verdict? When you visit the Cradle, you should definitely make a day of it. With so many different experiences to enjoy, in addition to the kind of food that makes you want to linger over the lunch table, you’ll leave for home feeling entirely revived.

Words Lisa Witepski

Our recommendations? The salad of caramelised pear, bacon and blue cheese, drizzled with a Turkish fig dressing. It was a wonderful study of contrasts, at once crunchy and creamy, with the salty, sweet and sour notes blending perfectly. Next up, the fillet - served alongside exotic mushrooms and a creamy sauce. Malva pudding seemed the best way to end the meal, although the creamy tiramisu is also delish.

ARTE ‘Arte’ is an Italian term for collective artistic creation. Your love of classical music and classic plays will merge in this spectacular theatre show. Arte (Presented by: The Method Actors’ Training Centre) is part of the Gauteng International Arts Festival and will interlink monologues from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, and Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, to create a cohesive, artistic adventure. Classical pianist, Willem de Beer will join six actors as they perform the monologues and a single dialogue, which will all be linked together by gorgeous classical music interludes. Prepare for an emotive journey through art and the human condition, with a little improv thrown in when necessary.

Words Victoria Taylor

Arte is a celebration and tribute to a few of the greatest dramatists and composers. The performance reminds us of our ability to transcend tragedy through creation and the beauty of art. POISON OF THE MONTH

Launch date: The brand

dates back almost a century, but Aperol has only been available in South Africa since 2012. Working with a secret recipe, brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri first unveiled Aperol,an Italian apertivo, at the 1919 Padua International Fair. The name ‘Aperol’ is a play on apéro, the informal French term for an aperitif.

How it’s made: Aperol is

made from sweet and bitter oranges, rhubarb, herbs and roots. It’s alcohol volume is just 11%.

Flavours: Refreshing hints of sweet and tangy orange, with a trace of woody bitterness.

Cool fact: Aperol’s signature

cocktail is an Aperol Spritz – which appears in the records as far back as 1950. This iconic, classic combination shows no signs of dating. If anything, its popularity has pushed Aperol onto the list of IWSR Top 100 Spirits brands for 2017.

Try one at: Marble in

Rosebank, The Landmark, or Gemilli’s in Bryanston.

Best cocktail: An Aperol Spritz Combine three parts Prosecco (or dry bubbly), two parts Aperol and a splash of soda. Serve in an ice-filled glass, garnished with a slice of orange. 5 www.aperol.com T @AperolSpritzSA @AperolSpritzSA

A

opens new Pretoria office

drienne Hersch Properties has sold and bought homes for its customers in just about every suburb in Jozi. Now, it’s time to share the love in the Jacaranda City!

“When you’re in the business of finding people homes, it takes you places. The business grows with the market’s needs, so I’m elated every time we open the door to a new office. That feeling never gets old. It means that after all this time, we’ve still got it!” laughs Adrienne Hersch, CEO & Founder of the Adrienne Hersch Property Group

Words Carly Ritz

The company’s newest office, Adrienne Hersch Properties Pretoria East opened in June this year, and takes the firm count to four in Gauteng. “We’re delighted! The region was selected because it’s perfectly aligned to current and potential client needs. Growth and expansion are core to our strategic development plan. It’s an opportunity to engage and meet new people as we expand the AH community. This business is about people, and the more we invite and welcome into the field, the better.” Located in Hillcrest Boulevard on Lynwood Road Pretoria East, the office is designed to service the Pretoria East area, Centurion and Midrand. “It’s an ideal spot for us

as the location is highly visible, and the area is popular off the back of its rapid growth, with many highend developments, both residential and corporate. Pretoria is becoming an increasingly desirable residential region, attracting a diverse range of South Africans.” Adrienne Hersch Properties Pretoria East will be led by Annalien van Rooyen, who has many years of real estate experience and expertise in residential sales and rentals. Daniel Hersch, the head of Adrienne Hersch Properties Business Development adds, “Our new office is definitely going to be a valuable asset in the Adrienne Hersch fold. Some of our existing clients who are based in the Pretoria East region, will enjoy the proximity of our new premises. Bringing our local expertise, combined with skills and quality processes, to the region will be extremely beneficial to the area. We look forward to assisting new buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants in the real estate process.”

The addition in Pretoria East is testament to the Adrienne Hersch Properties position as one of Gauteng’s premier and professional real estate brands, which was founded in 1991. Adrienne Hersch Properties has been awarded for marketing excellence over the years, and the company’s accolades speak volumes. “We’ve certainly had some proud moments. Receiving two awards, ‘Highly Commended Real Estate Agency South Africa’ and ‘Highly Commended Real Estate Marketing South Africa’ at the prestigious International Property Awards in Dubai is certainly up there,” quips Daniel. Adrienne Hersch Properties Pretoria East brings a host of professional services to the doorstep of many new clients. Clients will be the clear winners here, as AHP is known to deliver a high end real estate service and expertise as their differentiating approach. “We can’t wait to meet you, so please come and visit!” Adrienne concludes.

What’s the most difficult aspect of your job? One thing you need to know about my career; it’s not just an 8 to 5 job. Sometimes I need to be ready at night, early in the morning or over the weekends. It’s all about planning, and how you can make everything you do work to its best advantage. With a good team behind me, managing myself and my brand, anything is possible! What should you consider when choosing an outfit for the day? Never just choose an outfit for the sake of getting dressed. It’s always important to dress according to your goals - and every day you should have a goal! Whether it’s to get a salary raise, a new job, a date or even just going to social event. Always ask yourself ‘what do I want to achieve from today?’, and then choose an outfit that’ll help you achieve that goal. Who would you love to work with the most in the world? Ryan Seacrest! I don't know if people know how successful this man really is. He owns a few businesses which are very successful, and his presentation skills on stage, tv and radio are quite impressive.

Saturday night dancing, or Sunday brunch with mimosas? I love a good brunch. Dancing is always fun, but as we all get older, we soon realize that we look way better in the mornings when we’re fresh! 5 www.francoislouw.co.za | f @francoislouwbeauty | T @FrancoisLouw

Where’s your favourite place to eat? I have two… I’ll either go to Tin Roof Cafe or Kream. Their service and food is amazing, and you’ll never be disappointed.
