t would seem that autumn did a duck this year and winter ar rived unannounced. But there is still plenty to see, do and eat this month so don’t consider hibernation just yet. On that note, while we know that the city of Tshwane is home to some of the country’s top restaurants, if there is one place you just have to visit this month it is Forti Grill & Bar at Times Square in Menlyn. Owned and run by internationally acclaimed Chef, Fortunato Mazzone, this is contemporary Italian food served in a fine dining environment without the pageantry. And the food is simply sensational. If you catch Forti on the right night, he may just sing for you as well. Talk about dinner and a show! It’s also the month to celebrate Mom considering we all spent around 38 - 40 weeks warm, safe and well fed in her belly. So if you are stumped on gift ideas, we’ve taken the liberty of sourcing a variety of gorgeous, floral items for you like the Valdo Floral Edition Brut or some floral bling. It’s a bouquet of gifting in this month’s shopping section on pages 10 and 11.

NOTE

Check out this month’s selection of spas fit for a motherly visit too, on page 13. These serene destinations might be just the thing that mom needs after a morning meander which is what we’ve suggested on page 18. If mom (or dad) is a fan of local history, check out the Rovos Station, voted one of the top seven trains in the world by wired.com. Rovos Rail has given the now privately-owned station a revamp keeping the historical allure intact for train passengers and visitors. We also highly recommend the on-site railway museum. See pages 20 and 21 for more info and cultural activities in Pretoria. And if dad’s feeling a little neglected this month, tell him to keep last year’s Happy Socks on as our June issue is just a month away. Till then, take care and enjoy exploring Pretoria as I have this month!

Brooklyn

Brooklyn is located almost in the centre of everything that’s hip and happening. It’s just a three-minute drive to The Village in Hazelwood, Brooklyn Mall and the University of Pretoria and the people living there seem to enjoy a healthy, balanced lifestyle. If they don’t, they definitely know how to look the part.

People of

PRETORIA

Karien van vuuren

lifestyle

BRING ME TO

She’s a mom of three daughters which evidently makes life a challenge. This put Karien on a quest for the best spots in Pretoria – not only to escape but to enjoy with family and friends. Karien van Vuuren has been living in Pretoria for almost 22 years and we asked her to share her favourites with us:

What is your favourite place to wind down? Bellbottoms, an antique shop in Pierneef street, Villieria. I can spend hours there. They have fun and different items like toys, fancy gloves, vintage clothes and even an old petrol pump. 5 www.antiqueroute6pretoria.co.za

Brooklyn is filled with old houses that have been restored to their former glory. Some of them at least. Others have been crafted into some of Pretoria’s finest guesthouses, like Osborne House. Brooklyn is also home to one of Pretoria’s finest schools, Pretoria Boys High and a private residence, Sonop. Many houses have also been turned into communes for students, so the neighbourhood has a good balance between older residents, young families and students. Due to the nature of the community, the area has developed tremendously with trendy coffee shops that cater for students, but also for families and

pop-up markets that have residents queuing for corndogs, craft beers and doughnuts. Brooklyn Mall and Design Square is one of the main entertainment hubs in Brooklyn. It offers a luxury shopping experience with 220 specialist retail stores and Brooklyn Square boasts trendy restaurants like Tashas, Moo Moo, Tribeca, Starbucks and more. Brooklyn also boasts a few other restaurants like Signature Restaurant, which is still a favourite to dress up for. A popular spot is Ginger and Fig, their menu includes quite a few banting and vegetarian options and their homemade fettuccini is out of this world. They also have a few deli items and freshly baked bread that you can take home. Taras Bulba in Brooklyn street is a relatively new Portuguese steakhouse in the area and also boasts an impressive menu. For the sweet tooth and the coffee snob, Aroma in Lynnwood street definitely takes the cake. Here you’ll find some of the best ice cream in town and residents often combine their Sunday afternoon stroll with a stop for a delicious cuppa.

Where do you like to take your kids? Definitely the National Zoological Gardens with a picnic basket under the arm. It’s maintained very well and there is always something new to see. 5 www.nzg.ac.za Which Pretoria markets would you suggest? The Boeremark has been our favourite for years. There’s just something about being up at the crack of dawn, buying steaming hot coffee and fresh pancakes and filling your basket with the week’s vegetables, meat, sauces and flowers. Not to mention the freshly baked bread. 5 www.pretoriaboeremark.co.za Your favourite coffeeshop? I actually have two: The Vintage in Menlopark. Their coffee is Pretoria’s best and their profit goes to three NGOs. Spout at The Village is also an experience. Their date loaf is almost better than my grandma’s! 5 The Vintage: www.vintagecoffee.co.za f Spout: www.facebook.com/spoutcoffee Hello Pretoria • May 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

or those who enjoy the outdoors, the streets of Brooklyn are always a treat. Walk down Mackenzie street in October, with its Jacarandas in full bloom, and see why. In adjacent neighbourhoods like Nieuw Muckleneuk and Groenkloof, you’ll find impressive parks like Magnolia Dell, Jan Cilliers Park and Groenkloof Nature Reserve, which are often visited by their neighbouring community.

Where do you prefer to have a date night? Tin Roof Café at Mooiplaats, just outside of Pretoria. It’s peaceful, earthy and the food is great. 5 www.tinroofcafe.co.za

Forti Grill & Bar Authentic cuisine made with a theatrical flair!

Contemporary Italian, served in a fine dining environment without the pageantry. That’s how internationally acclaimed Chef Fortunato Mazzone describes the menu at Forti’s Grill & Bar

Chef Fortunato Mazzone

W

hen the team at Sun International imagined a world-class casino and entertainment hub, naturally it would need to come with an impressive culinary line-up. So, they scoured the local food scene and handcurated a list of eateries from concept kitchens to casual and fine dining spots to create a premium eating experience to rival some of the country’s most established dining venues. It’s a foodgasm waiting to happen. If you haven’t ventured that way just yet, you have been warned!

ʻ

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied

Of course, Forti Mazzone was on that highly coveted list, and in high demand too. While some were fighting for a place in the sun, Forti just took it as it came. “Sun International actually approached me and convinced me to come over the period of a month. They can be very “persuasive” – says the gregarious fifth-generation Italian restaurateur as only he can. And foodies the country over, are pretty pleased it all worked out that way.

“It was time,” said the chef-patron about opening a place featuring his own name. No stranger to the industry, Fortunato birthed and raised popular high-end Italian restaurant Ritrovo, the BICCCS coffee shop brand and late-night Pretoria hangout Priva, all of which are already part of his exceptional culinary legacy. So, when people started whispering about glass enclosed kitchens, tasting menus, an outside and inside section as big as each other, a butcher shop on site, and walk-in humidor, two private rooms and a cellar, those who knew Forti knew there was a show stopper on the way.

He might be a chef, but Forti Mazzone is also an extraordinary storyteller (and talented performer for those lucky enough to have caught one of his singing renditions.) Every dish on the menu is as much a culinary experience as it is a chapter, milestone or cliffhanger in Fortunato’s personal and familial journey and history. From his famous oven roasted prawns, an ode to his father or his impressive and enviable Vegan menu inspired by his mother, each dish has a story.

nothing is more rewarding than every time a regular customer returns.

I have never forgotten the basic principle that your client, especially your regular, is the person who puts bread on your table.

So, for the reader who has never pulled up a chair at Forti’s table yet, here are some of the must-have items according to the man himself. “Our meat which comes from Brian Angus Woodview Farm is brilliant. Our Wagyu is out of this world. My father’s recipe prawns are the best in South Africa and all our pasta is freshly prepared to order.

But as good as the food is, there can be no compromise on quality and service. Forti takes a moment to step back from all the hype and fanfare to really focus on what is important in this business. “We are in the hospitality industry. Many restaurants forget this and almost consciously make clients feel intimidated or unwelcome. I have never forgotten the basic principle that your client, especially your regular, is the person who puts bread on your table. Without your client, you don’t have a business. I want people to feel as welcome and as spoiled as possible, with very personal and attentive service that is ultra-friendly but never forward.”

Forti’s menu also boasts significant options for vegans which is exciting for those who are often just an afterthought on a non-vegan type menu. “My mother has been a strict vegetarian since 1969 so I have always had a big vegetarian choice. A dedicated vegan menu is still a dream for me as it is an evergrowing market segment.”

ʼ

And years later, when you ask Forti what he considers as highlights of his illustrious career, he still says that

The ever energized and engaging Forti lets us in on how he deals with rude customers and occasional staff. ‘I tell rude patrons to take a hike. I like to be surrounded by like-minded people – when it comes to staff and customers. It keeps our energy in the restaurant amazing. By the way, it happens very rarely. Most of our customers and staff are divine.”

To what does Forti attribute both the restaurants and his personal success, you may ask? “Hard work and consistency. And never compromising on service or ingredients.” Top Floor, Time Square Sun International Casino, corner Aramist Ave and Corobay Ave, Menlyn Maine 1 012 003 6180 0 info@forti.co.za 5 www.forti.co.za T @AtForti

t n a r u a t s e R THE MONTH OF

Whether you’re looking for a night out with the girls filled with cocktails and delectable meals, or a laid back lunch on a Sunday with family or friends, we’ve found that Mozambik near Silver Lakes is the answer for everything.

A

s soon as you walk up to the restaurant, you are warmly greeted by the staff and immediately feel relaxed. The tables are set with a brown paper tablecloth that the waiter will write their name on, just so you don’t forget. Before your drinks arrive, you get a small paper cone filled with peanuts, a true Mozambique restaurant tradition that helps diminish your hunger pains as you smell all the delicious scents that fill the air. One of the best ways to feel like you’ve been transported to the white sandy beaches of Mozambique with your friends is to share a jug of R&R – a mixture of Mozambik Rum and Sparletta Sparberry, be careful though, that sweet taste comes with a powerful punch. Next up, after sipping on your R&R, we highly recommend the creamy snails dish for starters; the chicken livers in a mild sauce or the prawn rissoles while sharing a bowl of

Known for their seafood, the prawns are always a firm favourite.

ʼ

For your main meal, where does one even begin? Known for their seafood, the prawns are always a firm favourite. If prawns aren’t on your mind though, a combo of calamari; chorizo and green olives in a garlic, lemon and herb sauce is another winner! The steak trinchado in a creamy white wine sauce or the

chicken prego roll are also popular options and it’s easy to see why – they taste delicious! To end off your lip-smacking meal, it’s a toss-up for us! The chocolate rissoles and the chocolate lava cake never disappoint. However, sometimes we are so in the mood for a Mozambique-like pudding called the 365. It’s an upside down Crème Caramel served with a caramel sauce. With establishments located around Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal, we love spending our weekends at their Silver Lakes branch thanks to the amazing service and delicious Afro-Porto meals. arts&culture Reminiscing at Rovos’ Station Like the Rovos Rail family business, the former Capital Park station from which you depart on your Rovos Rail journey has many stories to tell. The station plays a huge role in the experience of passengers at the beginning or the end of a trip.

20

Rovos Rail has given the now privately-owned station a revamp and kept historically relevant artefacts intact for train passengers and visitors to appreciate. The Hello Pretoria • May 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

steam and diesel loco shed has been cleaned up and the former offices have been converted into the railway station. Most of the structures have either been rebuilt or are converted ex-SAR buildings. The station platform and the clocktower are both new structures that have been added to enhance the Rovos Rail experience. Capital Park Station’s diesel and steam water tank is still in working condition and is currently being utilized and the semaphore signals and footbridge add to the atmosphere. The on-site railway museum is constantly developing and it is the Vos family’s goal for the Rovos Rail Station to become the leading working train museum globally. The museum is small and quaint and takes passengers back to their childhoods with an original phone box, parking meter and old trains, as well as special collector’s items that have been beautifully kept. Rovos Rail’s guests are welcomed

with drinks and canapes at the station and are often given an introductory speech by the owner, Rohan Vos (hence, Rovos), which sets the tone for the exciting journey ahead. Vos then also habitually takes guests on an informative and educational tour around the station grounds before the train’s wheels start turning, explaining the workshops and loco sheds with unfailing enthusiasm. The museum, marshalling yards, train renovation and repair facilities and welcome centre are all run by him. Vos is an enthusiast of note and with the help and support of his family, he has brought Rovos Rail and its station to what it is today. It is said that he attempts to be at every departure from Capital Park Station to welcome newcomers and repeat passengers. He also enjoys giving everyone a little imprint of what he has created over 25 years. 1 012 315 8242 0 reservations@rovos.co.za 5 www.rovos.com

Where is the station? Pretoria’s main station should not be confused with the Capital Park Station. It is very close to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and can be found in Transnet Avenue.

Lobola at the Station Rohan Vos, the founder of Rovos Rail, has four daughters and the members of the Vos family all play certain roles in the Rovos Rail Company. His second daughter, Bianca, married an Australian chap, who actually paid lobola for his bride! The Nguni cow and her calf now stay at the Capital Park Station.

t’s like exploring a bygone era when you step into the station building. Even before you set foot on the Pride of Africa, the Rovos Rail’s luxury train that has been voted one of the top seven trains in the world by wired.com, you are taken on a trip down memory lane. The station lounge has a certain elegance to it and takes you back to a time when you had to dress up for dinner and where sophistication was key. Capital Park Station (aka the Rovos Rail Station) serves as the departure and arrival point for all Rovos Rail journeys, leading to destinations like Cape Town, the Victoria Falls and even Dar Es Salaam (a 12-night journey). Passengers rave about the welcoming experience and the incredible atmosphere of the station on blogs, social media and TripAdvisor.

and whether you’re a honeymoon couple or family of four, this hotel caters for everyone. You're spoilt for choice with options from junior suites to family villas with infinity pools, to the more exclusive hillside villas with views that will freeze time. Don’t be mislead by their generous selection of 313 rooms because the most notable aspect of this resort is the space - you feel like you’re the only ones on the island. There are five swimming pools, two pristine beaches and the largest spa along the Indian ocean! There are baths and showers in the bedrooms of monarch standards, five gourmet restaurants as well as a takeaway snack outlet and five bars. Don’t expect mass consumption or low quality, the gastronomy and personalized service

run like a well-oiled machine. The beauty behind this concept of spoilt-for-choice is that you’re never bored; you can easily book a ten-night stay and have a unique experience every day. Your days and dreams collide as you start with a morning meditation at the exquisite U Spa, followed by a detoxifying Balinese style massage inspired by the exotic island aromas and a dip in the hydro-thermal pools. CONSTANCE LEMURIA - Praslin

The only 18-hole golf course in The Seychelles and a Green globe certified hotel.

O

ne minute you’re eyeballing the evergreen lawns, the next you're focusing on the most exquisite beach in all of the Seychelles - Anse Georgette. Pristine white sand and azure waters captivate all five senses. Hop on a golf cart and then walk less than a kilometre through the towering trees to marvel at this natural beauty, which has been named one of the three most beautiful beaches in the world. Next, head down to the infinity pool cascading into second and third plunge pools and order a tropical cocktail at the Legend Pool Bar. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy,

you can select another option as there are five bars in total and four restaurants. Sample fresh seafood from the Indian Ocean in Creole style at The Nest Restaurant, with stretches of turquiose waters and views that go on to infinity. If you were planning on proposing, this would be just the spot. At Constance Lemuria, one simply reconnects with nature. Not only is this a turtle sanctuary, but the lush landscape, titanic flora and fauna and the exclusivity of this hotel will dazzle you. It's five-star luxury all the way. 5 www.constancehotels.com

PARADISE SUN - Praslin Discover the ethos behind the Tsogo Sun brand right here in the heart of the island with the most extensive service, quality and mastery in the hotel provision.

D

o not go before visiting this island paradise, and while the rooms are well groomed and tick all the right boxes, what stands out is the location. Set on one of the most spectacular beaches in the world, this piece

of paradise sets the Seychelles apart from the rest. After your tropical fruit breakfast, you’ll head on down to the recliners and never leave. Under the palm trees with an outstretched beach at your feet, you can meander down the oceanfront for a brisk walk while admiring the raw untouched beauty. The water is so flat you can bring your fashionable flamingo floaty along and watch as the fish tickle your toes. Crystal clear water with a Mojito in hand, we think it's safe to say this is heaven on earth.

The hotel also offers spa treatments, childcare facilities, an entertainment centre, deep-sea fishing, snorkelling and sunset boat cruises. There’s a daily activity itinerary and lots in store for the children. You can also take a boat trip to Aride Island or Curieuse Island, but we would recommend doing nothing. Simply wine and dine at their beachfront St Pierre Beach Restaurant, which serves bountiful buffet dinners and then just relax, and breath in the breath-taking views. 5 www.tsogosun.com

What are two items you cannot live without? My iPhone and my MacBook air. Any NY resolutions for 2018? Set and keep boundaries with people. I’m a bit of a people pleaser, and that has consequences to your health, finances and happiness. You may lose some people in the process, but you’ll lead a more authentic life.

What do you take with you when travelling? For work travel I’d take my phone, wallet, Mac and passport, plus Louise Carver Collection jewellery and a Vesselina Pentcheva dress for performances. For a holiday, I’d take a good book, sunscreen, my phone, wallet, passport and a Hermanna Rush kaftan. What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made? Best: So many, but I really love my home. Worst: Any of my 5-inch heels. They’re so pretty but they stay in my cupboard - I just can’t endure the pain! What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read lately? You can’t hum while holding your nose closed.

You’re a South African folkrock singer- songwriter and pianist. Which of these do you hold closest to your heart? Definitely singer-songwriter. I’ve worked in many different genres of music around the world, but the most important thing is always the song. Without that, you have nothing.
