Here comes 2017…

T

he Hello Joburg team is a bit shell-shocked that the year 2016 is already drawing to a close. Never fear, we’re going to shake it off, because we want your year to end with a bang… and everything you need is right in this month’s issue.

While many others flock to the coast, holidays in Joburg have always been my favourite. My family rarely travels during December - we like to stay put and enjoy the quiet, the calm that settles over the city. We spend our days eating until we’re about to pop (everyone should!), lounging by the pool, visiting shopping centres and trying new restaurants. Lucky for you, we’ve become experts at it, and we love sharing our secrets with you. This month’s issue is absolutely packed with delish places to eat, and they’re right around the corner. We spill the beans on Belles Patisserie’s healthy (yet divine!) new menu and the fun hangout spot, Ritual Café in Linden. We’ve gathered the most fun little nibbles – think chocolate covered gourmet popcorn – and we’ve gone totally nuts for the new Turkish eatery in Norwood. We’ll sheepishly admit that we also enjoy taking advantage of those amazing end-of-year shopping deals. Who can resist a sale? If you’re in the mood to spoil a loved one, (or yourself, go on, you deserve

it), you’ll want to stick your nose right into our shopping section. Love this month’s cover? You’ll adore Cradlestone Mall – which just celebrated its 3rd birthday. Not only is the mall beautiful but it’s literally got everything you need. I’d definitely recommend spending a day there if you don’t venture to that side very often. If like us, you prefer to knuckle down and get some work done during the quiet times, we’ve sussed out the top five co-working spaces in Jozi. These spots are life-savers - serving food, equipped with super-fast fibre and filled with like-minded, driven individuals. Plus, they are beautiful! So you’ll definitely dive into a creative streak at one of these spots. After all the work is done and you can finally indulge in some ‘you time’, we recommend crossing Nelson Mandela Bridge and checking out Newtown. There’s a reason everyone’s going there, you know – it’s for the food, the theatres and the absolutely awesome vibe. We’ve let you in on a few must-visit spots, so take advantage. From myself and the Hello Joburg team, we’d like to wish all our valued readers a very happy New Year. We hope you enjoy your travels and return home safely. Spend this holiday season soaking up family moments, tucking them away so that they’re there when you need to look back on them. It’s those moments that will get you through any tough times in the year to come. Here’s to 2017!

SHARING IS CARING

A LIFE OF FLAVOUR

W

There’s a new kid on the block…

hen a new restaurant opens its doors in Jozi, we become frantic with anticipation. We don’t have mountains to climb or walks on the beach, so instead, we eat.

Our restaurants have upped their game in the last year, and this is no more evident than at the freshly opened 47 on Grant. The restaurant is Turkish fusion and the genius behind it is Nadia Sha. She’s on point, from the humble environment, to the ambience and the flavor. This stunning eatery is a rare find - we almost didn’t want to share it! Great food, excellent service, traditionally and authentically Turkish. It delivers. It’s rare when a dish tastes exactly as it looks, but we’re here to tell you that this is exactly the case. These are the most delicious things we ate. Drumroll please…

their creamy hummus and flat bread, which is served straight from their bread oven. The supple dough was hands down, one of the best breads we have ever tried. For our main meal, we ordered the Sri Lankan Pumpkin curry. Spicy and served in a coconut cream equals bliss on a plate. The restaurant’s heart stopper is the open flame grill, which serves up an exceedingly juicy kebab, chicken sheesh or lamb pirzola. All mains are served with a choice of three salad dishes, prepared and designed by Nadia. Pair this with their homemade lemonade and you’ll understand the hype.

T

apas is cool and sassy, so we couldn’t wait to try the brand new Lima’s Tapas Bar in Montecasino. This Latin-American fusion restaurant is everything and more! There is so much to be excited about because it ticks all the right boxes. Lima’s is a showstopper, the crème de la crème. We may be based in Craighall Park but it’s totally worth the schlep. When you sink your teeth into this food you’ll understand why we can’t stop raving about it. Chef Justine Joseph is 24 years old and visited South America to experience authentic tapas. She’s trained at The Hilton and the Four Seasons and has worked at DW Eleven-13. She’s a gem and has commended the Latin American culture in her gastronomy. The menu is extensive so we’ve picked some of our favourites. Be prepared to be aroused! Pick your poison HJ recommends the Nikkei Mule - sultry and spicy, it’s served in a copper mug with Bacardi Gold, jalapeno and lemon juice. It’s shaken, strained and topped with ginger beer. We love the Blood Orange Mojito – it’s the Lima twist on the classic and is a concoction of muddled lime, Bacardi Superior, mint and sugar over crushed ice with blood orange juice. Try the English tea set collection (which comes served in an actual tea set) and The Don - tequila, tea, vanilla, apple and lemon juice. Wowzers! Select your snack HJ recommends the soft shell tacos - salmon, tuna, beef, veggie, pork or chicken. They’re all delectable! We love the salmon ceviche served with corn and sweet potato in Leche De Tigre. Try the selection of sushi, especially the sushi burgers! That’s reason enough to visit! shopping CRAZY ABOUT CRADLESTONE

I

Cradlestone Mall celebrated 3 successful years in November

f you haven’t yet visited the gorgeous Cradlestone Mall then do yourself a favour and check it out, pronto! This mall has spunk, a ton of stores and a whole lot of heart.

Cradlestone Mall has won numerous awards, such as Category winner of The Retail Design and Development Awards, The Spectrum Awards for Retail Design and Development, and the SAPOA Initiative Xcellence in Property Development. What an over-achiever! The Mall is on a green journey - the Precinct upgrade is underway and aims to provide a restructured space around the Mall, giving everyone a better, eco-friendly environment. The thing we love the most? There are in-centre water saving awareness tips to remind customers to manage the resource responsibly. Their rainwater harvesting project can collect up to 130 000 litres of water, which

they use to run public toilets for a period of up to four days. With waste management, 40% of all the waste generated at the Mall is recycled. Solar panels have been installed, helping the Mall save 330 tons of carbon dioxide gasses. In comparison to making coffee, this means they have saved energy equivalent to 35,153,868 cups of coffee! That’s a huge thumbs up from us! Cradlestone Mall also has generators, so none of the stores close if the power goes out. There’s also a number of exciting new stores - John Dorys, Buckley & Boo, Volpes, Aziz Bebe, Telkom, Kids Emporium and Bodytec. The Mall takes initiative - they implement CSI campaigns on behalf of the local community. Under the umbrella ‘Cradle Cares’ the latest campaign, called Hangers for Hope, received Industry recognition and won a SACSC Gold

PYJAMA PARTY!

The adult kind, of course!

W

e’ve heard about living in the lap of luxury… but now you can sleep in it too! Hello Joburgers, we want to introduce you to our latest obsession – Papushka, a line of gorgeous sleepwear and kaftans that you’ll fall in love with! Create by Nishad Khan, the Papushka brand was created to inspire confidence within women. It states on the website that each garment is ‘made with a stitch of love, a stitch of confidence, a stitch of positivity, and a stitch of greatness – all for YOU,’ and to be frank, we believe it. These garments are for women - the new bride, the star-crossed lover, the sophisticated businesswoman, the supermom, the devoted partner and the sensual lover. They were made to make you feel like a goddess, and believe us when we say that it totally will. Choose from silk or tulle gowns (calf, thigh or floor length), gorgeously bright kimonos, chiffon ponchos, incredibly comfortable pyjamas, lace kaftans, and oh-so-sexy pyjama inners. The possibilities are endless!

12

We could spend our summer days lounging in the Hermosa kimono (R2199). It’s incredibly light and it’s available in white, blue and yellow. Or you could opt to use it as a bold splash of colour with some black dress pants. We can’t believe how versatile this gorgeous piece is. Hello Joburg • December 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

We’re lusting after the Jocelyn jumpsuit in sexy black satin (R1 899). It’s got lace trimmings too! Flirty, fun… to-die-for! Another reason why we love this brand? They’re proudly South African! Each garment is designed and made right here in SA, using the best quality fabric. There’s also a limited number of each piece available to buy, so that makes them extra special. 5 www.papushka.co T @PapushkaDotCo @papushkadotco

Words Victoria Taylor

We’re a little obsessed with the Anaya chiffon poncho (R1 499). Anaya means ‘completely free’ in Sanskrit, which is fitting seeing as though both sides of the poncho are open, making it incredibly easy to wear. The blue and gold colours make you think of summer days by the pool and coincidentally, you can wear it over your bikini! What a win!

Gemelli, meaning ‘twin’ in Italian, is the perfect representation of ‘family first’ in the running of his business.

Starting out in an Italian kitchen in Durban, Khojane’s first serving of Pasta Arrabiata was less than average, but he’s mastered the traditional favourite. If you’ve had the pleasure of dining at Gemelli in Sandton, you’ll agree that it is contemporary Italian at its’ finest, with a feeling of family.

Khojane would pay almost anything for a great experience. When asked about the Chef ’s table he would most like to sit at, he revealed that every dish his own Chef Santo prepares has blown his mind. So when he’s not dining at Gemelli, you can find him at his best breakfast spot – Old Town Italy or keeping it simple at Koi. He believes the key to a good meal is a great team. When a team doesn’t get along, he promises you can taste it in the food. It just goes to show that his close-knit Gemelli family love what they do, and who they do it with.

GARTH JOHNSON

Executive Chef at The Maslow

C

onfident, driven, passionate. These are the words we’d use to describe Chef Garth Johnson. It’s really no surprise that this 29-year-old stud scooped up such a prestigious position within one of Sun International’s top retreats.

Garth admits that although he grew up in a great tourist destination, Windhoek Namibia (land of the brave, dessert and wildlife) is not a place known for any culinary achievements. However, that didn’t stop him for attending Chef School in Hermanus in the Western Cape, as he always knew that food was in his future. “Cooking was the only thing that ever grasped my attention from an early age. Food taught me to be curious.”

When prompted, Garth revealed that the inspiration from his food comes from… other food! Or more a flavour will spark an idea or a serving style. “At times I can be inspired by a

20

Hello Joburg • December 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

While most people (like us) would balk at the idea of such responsibility, Garth revels in it. “I was fully aware of the responsibilities involved, when I accepted the position. The stress and excitement is all part of the job. While growing up in this industry, I’ve always chosen the more challenging path.”

A smooth sea never made a skilful sailor. Nothing great, comes easy - which is what I always tell chefs starting in the industry. “I suppose if you make a comparison with other Executive Chefs in the industry, it might be a big deal, but my age does not faze me, nor should it others. This is a job I was hired to do my best in and I will not fail.” We’ve tried some of the dishes at The Maslow, and he does his job brilliantly. Each dish is an adventure, a journey of taste that always ends in satisfaction.

What we love most is that Garth and his team take full advantage of local farms and get most of their fruits, veggies and proteins from local farmers. Local is definitely lekker! Garth also revealed that his favourite ingredient to work with is Karoo Lamb – “It’s got amazing flavour that remains an icon in our country and it’s so versatile.” However, at home, he’s experimenting with loads of vegetarian broths. “Vegetables are amazing, just like meat! I’m focusing more on flavours that develop as opposed to basic preparation.” Just for giggles (and because we’re nosey), we asked Garth what meal he would cook, if he could cook for anyone in the world. “Dinner with Thomas Keller. It would be a variety of snacks. I enjoy playing with flavour in small dishes - Korean Kalbi beef, crayfish dahl with chick pea pancake and smoked olive with feta.” Sound delish! Hopefully we can score an invite. 146 Rivonia Road, Sandton

hile we prefer spending our summer days outside, there’s nothing quite like a pamper day, even if it means being indoors. Aura Salon in Parkhurst is sublime, and boasts luxury as well as brilliance. Tucked away on 6th Street, this salon is a gem, and in addition to loving the ambience, we also love the staff. Now many women have realised that being superwoman isn’t as easy as we thought, and we all need a time out.

We recommend a QMS Classic Collagen facial for R830. This anti-ageing treatment is a wise choice. The market seems flooded with skincare products that aren’t effective, but we assure you this QMS facial helps protect and smooth the skins surface. Most importantly, it reaches the dermis and not just the epidermis (surface level). This facial is perfect for tired or dehydrated skin, and as collagen accounts for around 70% of the skins weight, its ideal for collagen production and immediate results.

As an excuse to relax and be pampered whilst still taking care of your skin, a visit to Aura is mandatory! You’ll thank us later.

Just a tip, Megan offers the best facials, so remember to ask for her when you call or SMS to book your appointment.

Downstairs you’ll find the exclusive nail bar with massage chairs. That’s right, while you have your nails done, your back and neck will also be pampered. Can you think of anything better? We can’t! Keeping your feet in top shape will set you back R310 and you’ll get a foot massage! Offering many beauty-boosting treatments promoting healthy glowing skin and body, you’ll leave Aura with a new found confidence whilst looking your best. JOZI IS A GOOD SPORT

On your marks, get set… go!

E

ver since South Africa hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Johannesburg has raised the bar when it comes to hosting sporting events. Every kind of sport you’re into, you are guaranteed to find somewhere to do it in the City of Gold, because Joburgers feel the gees!

The Soweto Derby sees SA’s Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates battle it out on the soccer field. It takes place at the FNB Stadium in Soweto and attracts thousands of soccer fans and stars, as it’s one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. If you’re a lover of footie, you’ve got to catch the game. The 702 Walk the Talk is one of the most well-known charity walking events in Joburg. Thousands participate in the 5km, 8km or 5km race to raise funds and awareness for charities. Each member that crosses the finish line gets a medal for participating, and it’s one of the most enjoyable events of the year. 5 www.walkthetalk.co.za The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge shuts down half the city and thousands of cyclists push themselves to the limit to participate. Riders pedal an incredible 94.7km, starting at the Riversands Commercial Park through Kyalami, Rosebank, the CBD and back through Randburg and Fourways. Most participants ride for a cause and to date, the Challenge has raised over R53.4 million through the initiative, which has been distributed to more than 127 registered charities. 5 www.cyclechallenge.co.za Every year, thousands participate in the iconic Soweto Marathon – it’s one of the most

popular races in Joburg. It’s not difficult to see why, either. Choose between a 10km fun run, test your skills in the half marathon or go the distance and participate in the full marathon (a whopping 42.2kms!) You’ll venture past some historic places, including the Hector Pieterson memorial, Vilakazi Street, Morris Isaacson High School, Regina Mundi Church, Walter Sisulu Square and the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. It’s a gorgeous route, and a great way to discover Jozi. 5 www.sowetomarathon.com The Sansui Summer Cup is fast becoming one of Jozi’s hottest horse racing events. It’s action packed, full of sun, excitement and fun and takes place every year at the Turffontein Racecourse. Celebrities arrive in droves, dressed to the nines and place their bets on their favourite horses. It’s definitely a lifechanging event. f SANSUI Summer Cup The Hollard Jozi Urban Mountain Bike Adventure (JUMA) is definitely not for the faint hearted! It has two routes – a 54km and 22km urban bike ride through the biggest urban forest in the world… AKA Jozi. It’s so intense that the routes feature storm drains, underground tunnels and even floating bridges. Serious sportsman spend months training in the hopes if pocketing a share of R180000 in cash. 5 www.juma.co.za The Land Rover Africa Cup is one of the most highly anticipated Polo Tournaments of the year. Countries like Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria and more battle sit out on the field in order to take home coveted trophy. It takes place every year at the stunning Inanda Club in Sandton and hundreds of people attend, including some very fashionable celebrities and well-known sportsman. 5 www.inandaclub.co.za

nightlife THE BEST WORST PUBS IN JOBURG

Y

The places that are so bad, they’re actually awesome!

ou know what we’re talking about. The places that you would never admit to frequenting in the sober light of day. The seedy, smoky, sometimes dodgy bars that birth the most epic parties and legendary stories. You only go there late at night, after a few glasses and with friends that you trust.

The Radium Beer Hall - A legendary spot in its heyday, some will tell you that the Radium is the oldest surviving bar and grill in Joburg. Supposedly opened as a tea room in the late 1920s, there’s no tea party happening there today. With its hardwood bar benches, tongue-in-cheek framed headline posters tacked to the wall from years gone by – ‘lesbians lose appeal’ - being a personal favourite and musicians with grey pony tails gracing the stage, the Radium epitomises the good old dive. But we can’t get enough. The paraphernalia on the walls, plonk wine and thin based pizzas make spending an entire Sunday afternoon/early evening at this spot pretty easy. 282 Louis Botha Avenue, Orange Grove. 5 www.theradium.co.za The Jolly Roger - A list like this wouldn’t be complete without the Dodgy Roger in Parkhurst. Its sticky floors, beer stench and cramped bathrooms definitely don’t make it a place to write home about. But the booze are relatively inexpensive compared to places down the road, the music is old school and the pizza is yum. You can be sure that any oddly timed sport game will be shown here – attracting the ‘okes’ and their ‘chicks’ who will pull up a spot and camp out for most of the

day. A word of caution: if you’re leaving the venue under the influence, exit with care. That little sloping pavement as you exit is steeper than you think! 10, 4th Avenue, 6th Street, Parkhurst 5 www.jollyroger.co.za

Giles - A legend in its own lunchtime in Craighall Park, Giles (family owned and run to this day) is a safe place for the locals. With its mid-month pub quizzes and regular faces, it really does defend its ‘small neighbourhood pub’ image since it was opened in 1994 by Ian and Jenni Gillies. However, today, if anyone wants to call it a restaurant with a pub, knock them over the head. The food may be good but Giles is a buzzing pub with a lot of tables to sit down and have a beer at. 9 Grafton Avenue, Craighall Park 5 www.gilesrez.co.za

Give us a shout on the Hello Joburg Magazine Facebook page so that we can add your favourite messy, smoky, stuffy, siff or gross bar to our list, because we think they’re just the best!

CHEERS FOR BELUGA

Russia’s super-premium vodka has launched in South Africa!

B

eluga Vodka is distilled in the small batches in the Mariinski Distillery in remote Siberia and is made using centuries-old traditional Russian methods. Needless to say, it works – brilliantly! Your night out just got a whole lot better.

Beluga Christmas Savory Tini 2 measures of Beluga Noble ¼ measure of Olive juice ¼ measure of Cocktail onion juice ¼ measure of Pepperoncini juice

Walk up to the bar and order a Beluga Vodka on the rocks and you’ll be the most interesting person at the party. Guaranteed. As you’ve probably guessed, we’re over the moon that it’s finally available on South African soil. Beluga’s crisp character is made using a gentle, au-natural fermentation process using malt spirit that is very rarely used in vodka anymore. Different natural ingredient infusions are blended with water sourced from deep Siberian artesian wells. It’s then delicately washed quartz sand, triple-filtered through graphite columns, and then allowed to slow percolate through quartz sand again. Then it’s left to rest for up to 3 months to mature, leaving you with a luxurious soft, smooth vodka.

Stir ingredients over ice, strain into a chilled martini glass, and garnish with a cocktail onion pinned on the cocktail stick. Festive touch: Once you strained your cocktail into a glass, add a tiny spoonful of black caviar, stir gently with your cocktail stick & onion.

Did we mention that each bottle is adorned with a hand-fitted Beluga fish - the source of the finest caviar, and long considered by Russians to be the supreme accompaniment for Beluga Vodka. The bottles are in a word –sublime! 5 www.vodka-beluga.com

arts&culture

A THURSDAY TO REMEMBER he best things in life are free – like First Thursdays. This event (which happens on the first Thursday of every month) is without a doubt, the best way to see Joburg in all its arty, cultural glory.

Words Victoria Taylor

Here’s what you need to know - galleries and a few restaurants and pubs stay open late so that guests can explore the city on foot, stopping at one place and then another to soak it all in. The amount of venues participating is awesome – but can be a little daunting, so don’t think you’ve got to check out every stop along the way. So here’s where you can start… Maboneng This is where it all begins… with a glass of Boschendal at the Living Room. Grab a map, listen to some great tunes and then head out. Stop by Goethe on Main or Hazard gallery for your arty fix before heading to the Bioscope Independent Cinema for a truly South African film. Then hop along to the POPArt Theatre for a cracking good show, before grabbing a drink or a delicious meal at Lenin’s Vodka Bar or the new kid on the block, Che Argentine Grill.

Braamfontein The neighbourhood that never sleeps, Braamfontein was one of the first places First Thursday was held after being bought over from Cape Town. While there’s still a few galleries on this tour, including Kalashnikovv Gallery and Stevenson Gallery, there’s more to see on the culture side. Catch a live Jazz show at the Orbit, grab a drink and some chow at Kitcheners or Neighbourgoods Market and check out the sneakers revolution at Anatomy and PUMA Select - the second store of its kind to open doors in the entire world.

Rosebank This artistic stretch is home to a ton of galleries, including the Goodman Gallery (open since 1966!), Everard Read - Africa’s oldest commercial art gallery, as well as Gallery MOMO, David Krut Projects and the Keyes Art Mile which recently opened and has a number of divine eateries to grab a bite at.

entertainment NON-STOP ENTERTAINMENT The ideal way to kick back and relax

W

ith the December holidays stretching gloriously before you, we have some ideas on how to spend that extra downtime.

Inferno - Dan Brown Where there’s Dan Brown, there’s a blockbuster. Inferno is bound to enjoy the success of forerunner The DaVinci Code. Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon appears in Florence to uncover a threat, with only a few words from Dante’s poem, the eponymous Inferno, to guide him. The book has already been turned into a film starring Tom Hanks.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN Robinson Crusoe It’s a family day out with a new, animated twist on the Daniel Defoe classic about an island castaway. Look out for ambitious parrots, warring cats and fuddled humans, all discovering lessons about what friendship means. The Edge of Seventeen `If coming-of-age movies are your thing, you won’t want to miss this slice of life flick about an awkward teen whose All-American brother starts dating her best friend. The always impressive Woody Harrelson stars in it too! Office Christmas Party The irresistible comedic duo of Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston are at it again. This time in a caper about that time-honoured year-end institution - the office party. It’s serious stuff, Aniston’s office workers must host the shindig of all time in order to impress a client and seal a deal.

Tannie Maria and the Satanic Mechanic Sally Andrew Its local laughs all the way with this charming tale about Tannie Maria, an agony aunt from the Klein Karoo, who stumbles her way from offering advice on failed relationships to dodging bullets from murderous criminals. Look out for delish local recipes. American Pastoral An all-star cast (Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Connolly and Ewan McGregor, who also makes his directorial debut) experience the American dream being rent apart in this film adaptation of Phillip Roth’s award-winning novel. The Sea of Trees Acclaimed director Gus van Sant is back with a look at love. Arthur (Matthew McConaughey), a detached intellectual, travels to Japan’s Sea of Trees in a state of grief but in becoming physically lost, he finds himself.

Small Great Tings - Jodi Picoult Picoult applies her trusted formula to a scenario that’s particularly intriguing, given our current context of Brexit- and Trumpinspired nationalism: a white supremacist sues an African American nurse after the death of his baby, with dramatic results. Cliffhanger - Gareth Cliff South Africa’s favourite shock jock has, by turns, made our jaws drop and killed us with laughter. Here, he gives an intimate look into his journey from campus DJ to muchrespected social commentator.

Bridget Jones’s Baby - Helen Fielding Get out the granny broeks! The woman who made it ok to come out about your dislike of Smug Marrieds is back. She’s about to embark on one of the greatest adventures life has to offer: motherhood. As with anything in Bridget’s life, complications are part of the package. Don’t be put off by the movie, as the story is a little different – and who can resist Helen Fielding’s quirky humour?

GET ON BOARD!

Family bonding and fun for all!

I

n the days where everyone has an iPad, you’re sure to hear a few sighs when you declare that it's board game time. While we at Hello Joburg love our high-tech stuff, we also savour the oldschool side of gaming. Here’s what we’ll be breaking out over the holidays…

Cards of Humanity This game is hilarious in the worst ways and it’s definitely not for the easily offended. It works like this… one player asks an absurd question from one of their black cards and everyone else responds with their funniest response from their white card. It’s a New Age game that will bring out the worst in your friends, and show their true (darkest) colours. Be prepared to laugh your head off and be completely shocked at the same time. Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit

Mzanzi Monopoly Hello Joburgers earlier this year you voted and now the wait is finally over! Monopoly Mzansi, South Africa’s very own Monopoly board game, with 22 proudly South African locations, has launched! If like us, you love anything proudly South African, than you’ll just love this game! Gather your favourite peeps, hop on board the Gautrain; take a stroll through the Maboneng Precinct or Vilakazi Street or the hippest spot in town and 4th Avenue Parkhurst, all from the comfort of your own home!

Battle of the Sexes This one is for when you’ve tucked the little ones into bed and are having a fun night with your full-grown friends. This gender-based trivia battle involves teams of men and women answering questions about the opposite sex – and the results will have you in stitches. It’s the best way to find out how many stereotype your significant other knows. Catan The maker and breaker of friends, Settlers of Catan will test your strategic gaming skills to the limit. Collect resources, build roads and settlements and upgrade them into bustling cities. Some resources you’ll get in abundance, others you’ll have to trade for and it’s all fun and games until someone takes the last brick!

Most of these are available from Game, Makro, Checkers, Hamleys, Toys R Us, Lilliputs, Toy Zone and Toy Kingdom.

Everyone loves trivial pursuit right? We love the Harry Potter version even more! With six trivia categories - The Dark Arts, Hogwarts, Magical Spells & Potions, Magical Objects, Magical People and Animals & Magical Creatures and 600 questions, even the expert wizards will find it a challenge. Accio up a chair and get playing, you won’t regret it! It’s also totally transportable – perfect for summer vay-cays.

travel A HOME AWAY FROM HOME Be a tourist in your own city

We know many Joburgers don’t frequently opt to stay in a local hotel next door, but we highly recommend it. What could be more gratifying than a mini holiday just fifteen minutes away from home? You get to escape the stresses of everyday city life and unwind in the abyss of formal style living. Don’t be fooled - as comfortable as the hotel is, it still showcases flair. Our favourite parts of this hotel are the rooms and restaurant. The rooms are all contemporary-classic glamour adorned with beautiful locally crafted pieces, and individually designed. They’re spacious and provide a sanctuary, a home away from home, so you can tap into complete relaxation. You can lie on the day bed and reflect on the clouds passing by as you stare out at the picturesque pool. It’s this location, situated on such luscious gardens, that calls for the alluring visions. This space becomes your own. There are nine suites to choose from and each offers a ten out of ten experience. The restaurant recently appointed Willie Malherbe as Executive Chef, which explains why there is exceptional food and service! Chef Malherbe is a celebrated cook who trained under top international chefs, and has worked in some of the best kitchens in the world.

Asked where his passion for cooking stemmed from, Malherbe acknowledges his grandmother. “I grew up in a family where food was enjoyed immensely –it was a big part of our daily life, and meal times were a grand affair. My grandmother was the main inspiration for me getting into cooking; she was a phenomenal cook, who used the Larousse Gastronomique as her bible,” he recalls. “We used to go for Sunday lunch with the whole family and she would serve consommé as a starter, using proper stock that she had prepared from scratch earlier in the week.” Being treated to Chef Malherbe’s cuisine for the first time, we had the single malt cured

salmon with beetroot Carpaccio, apple slaw, lime leaf sorbet and rye crisp. It is to-die-for! SAY NO TO HOLIDAY HELL

How to make sure your holiday home delivers on its promises

he holidays are on their way, you’re looking forward to hitting the beach and feeling the soft sand between your toes. The last thing you’re expecting is sand in your bed as well. And a lumpy mattress, to boot – ugh.

Book at an establishment graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa – it’s like a quality assurance stamp of approval. The Grading Council has over 5200 hotels, lodges, self-catering resorts, B&Bs, guesthouses, game lodges and even camping and caravanning sites on its books.

We’ve all been there: believing the websites and Facebook pages of holiday resorts, B&Bs, guest houses, self-catering chalets and hotels and then booking based on blind faith – only to arrive and realise that we’ve been fed a pack of lies.

So, as we gear up for the festive season, how do you know if the spot you’re booking for your relaxing year-end getaway will live up to its own hype? Hello Joburg • December 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

HEALTHY VIA AIR CONS Words Nelmarie Kapp, Product Marketing for Panasonic South Africa

Are they a blessing, or a curse?

S

ummer is here and so is the heat. We’re breaking out fans and switching on air cons… and suffering from hay fever! We’ll bet you didn’t (want to) know that your air conditioner could house nasty bacteria that’s making you ill…

Hay fever unleashes an onslaught of sneezing, a runny nose, or itchiness in your nose, mouth and throat - enough to incapacitate even the toughest individuals.

As much as there are external triggers, there are also internal triggers within your home. These triggers include dust mite droppings, animal dander, cockroach droppings and molds. There are also germs in the air that we pass on to each other at the office or at home. The latest conventional air conditioning units might be able to protect you from most of these elements but research has revealed that they may be making you sick - by collecting and harbouring harmful germs that get re-circulated. The bacteria gets trapped in the filters and multiplies before re-entering your home.

5 www.panasonic.com/za

Panasonic have innovative technology to help ease your allergy pain. Nanoe-G and is an air purifying system that uses nano technology - fine particles consisting of ions and radicals. This technology works on airborne, adhesive and in-filter trapped micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses thus providing a cleaner living environment.

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country.

7 minutes with Kim Jayde Robinson This gorgeous model, fashion blogger, MC and television presenter has a heart of gold. She gave us a rare glimpse into her fabulous lifestyle… What did you love most about your childhood in Zimbabwe? I love the freedom and safety that came with growing up in a small town. Riding our bicycles around town, building forts and mud-huts with my brothers and spending all day outside - young, innocent and free! What are the pros and cons of being a model? It’s competitive! But if you love what you do (and I really do) it’s so worth it, because every photo-shoot or commercial shoot is totally different and unique! It’s not a traditional 9 to 5 job, but I’ve been at it for 6 years now, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. How do you relax? I like to relax at home, watch some trashy reality TV. No make-up, in my comfy PJ’s, and a big bowl of pasta. Bliss! Give us the scoop on your festive plans… I’m going to Zimbabwe for a week - exciting! My mum is also having a massive family lunch in Joburg with tons of incredible food! I foresee myself gaining some holiday weight! Beach life or city livin’? Beach life! Heck yea!

You can’t live without… My cell phone, my bed and my laptop. T @KimJaydeBlog @kimjayde w www.kimjayde.wordpress.com

What are the finer things in life you enjoy indulging in? I’m a serious foodie - that’s the way to my heart. I enjoy quiet days at home with my family, or having my friends over and eating and laughing - those are the simple things that bring me joy.
