Get to know Hello Joburg Magazine editor

Q. Which store and mall would you like to max out your credit card at? Zara in Sandton City for fashion without a doubt. If I could only shop for clothes at Zara for the rest of my life, that would be just fine by me! Then also the Cosmetics Gallery in Hyde Park Corner for beauty – it has all my favourite cosmetic brands, including MAC, Lancôme, Chanel and Sisley. Q. What’s the worst Jozi restaurant you’ve ever been to? It must be Craft in Parkhurst. I just can’t understand the type – every meal I’ve had there has been tasteless and I can't justify paying R120 for a substandard G&T that isn’t even Insta-worthy.

Drinking champagne – I am a woman after all!

Q. Describe yourself in three words… Dreamer, perfectionist, powerful. Q. If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be? I’d love to be a pro at yoga. Q. Name three things still left on your bucket list. To publish a book, live and work in New York and get engaged on the rooftop of the Terrass Hotel in Paris (hopefully!).

2

Q. You’re running late for the weekly editorial meeting. Do you: A) turn up the music and dance, B) grab a coffee on the way or C) be lame and message your boss to let him know? Definitely B. There’s always an extra 10 minutes for coffee – especially if it’s a vanilla latte from Motherland Coffee Company. Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Dessert-wise, it’s the ‘gold bar’ of caramel mousse from Level Four Restaurant at 54 on Bath. Just go and try it – trust me! Q. What’s the oldest thing in your refrigerator? Joburg based Zinah is ready to wow the music industry

wwith her latest single, Ever Been. Since beginning her

journey at the age of seven when she decided the arts was her calling, she’s never looked back and has seen her passion take her to Europe as part of the Whitney Houston tribute shows in late 2016. Most recently, she set to the stage as the host of Born To Perform 2019 Shineat the Monte Casino Teatro and now she’s putting all her energy into releasing her original work. This is what a typical Friday in Zinah’s life looks like. E @zinahrose D @zinahrose Q @zinahrose_ 07h30 I wake up and shower, but I usually check my cupboard first to see what I’m going to wear for the particular shoot I have scheduled for that day. I then put my makeup on and get dressed. 09h30 I don’t usually eat in the mornings if I have a shoot – I always eat afterwards. But I always drink hot water with lemon and honey because it warms my voice up and clears my throat. It also brings a brightness to my skin! 10h00 This is the time I’d arrive at location we’ll be shooting at. Because I know the camera crew is still setting up, I sit in the car and just run through my script on my own and mentally prepare myself for the job. 10h15 At this point, the producer would run the script with me and check if I’m saying certain things the right way for putting the right emphasis or the correct syllables, etc. We then start playing with camera angles to see if they work with the light. 12h00 It usually doesn’t take long to shoot the inserts they need for a particular video. In this case, it would take about an hour or hour and a half. 15h00 My musical theatre class begins at this time. My first girls’ group is an hour. I then have a private lesson with another student doing performance arts of musical theatre preparing for their exams. 18h30 My Fridays are always relaxed. Well, I try keep them relaxed because I teach on a Saturday morning at 08h30. So, I’ll grab a glass of wine and watch a movie in my room and pass out from there. 20h00 Lights out! Unladylike AND LOVING IT Most of us like to be liked. It’s totally human. If you’re winning at the like/share/ comment game, then keep going! But it’s also exhausting having to dot the i’s and cross the t’s all time to keep your dude happy. This month, we’re owning some of our more ‘annoying’ traits and if bae don’t like it – well, then, bye Felicia! Public displays of affection When we’re in love we don’t care who knows it – so shape up or ship out. If you don’t like being kissed in public or holding hands at the movies then find someone equally indifferent. Gone are the days when women have to hold themselves back or behave themselves because you feel ‘embarrassed’ – trust us, she’ll find someone who wants to love her and let the whole world know. So next time she plants a sloppy wet kiss on your cheek in front of your mates, go with it or go home.

6

Feelings for days If the sound or sight of a woman’s ugly cry scares you, maybe it’s time for a little introspection. In most cases men don’t have difficulty with your emotion, but with their own and that’s not your problem – it’s his. We’re not saying kick him to the curb because he’s out of touch with Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

both your and his feelings, but let him know that if he wants to stay with you then he needs to lose the fear that displaying emotions will counter his mandate as an ‘oke’. Take me for who I am So you paint your nails shocking pink, dye your hair blue and snort and laugh during funny movies and he can’t sand it. Men who want to change physical attributes and habits or influence your appearance will slowly start wanting to change a whole lot more. The truth is they are probably a little shallow and insecure themselves. Snort on, guuurl! Girls’ night He sulks when girls nigh rolls around because A) he has to cook for himself and B) you may come home a little tipsy and rowdy and overshare about the things you discussed with your pals. Best he put on his big boy undies especially if you have been on the receiving end his ‘one more drink after work with colleague’ or his best mates stag night. Alternatively, a cute puppy will also be more than happy to have you home and listen to the details of your night out. Movie-rupting You’ve agreed to watch a ‘skop, skit and donner’ flick with him rather than Renee Zellwegger new series What If on Netflix. The show’s plot it either a tad inconsequential or hard to follow so you ask a few questions and it drives him nuts. Well there goes his turn with the TV remote if that’s the case. If you’re watching testosterone trivia with him, the least he can do is keep you informed. Happy Women’s Day to all our female readers. Here’s to doing the things you do without judgement or complaints!

CANDICE PHILIP The female chef of the moment

At Grei, head chef Candice Philip brings elements of the unusual to your dining experience. Whether you’re looking for one of the best tasting menus in Joburg or simply a high-class spot to celebrate a special occasion, she has you covered for a candlelit dinner à deux. Tell us about some of the wines included in the wine pairing option. Some of the favourites are the Castiglion Del Bosco Chardonnay 2018 from Toscana, Italy paired with the springbok starter and a classic Cape blend, Meinert Synchronicity 2015, from Devon Valley, Stellenbosch paired with the short rib main course. There’s a non-alcoholic juice pairing available as well. These juices are all prepared in-house, keeping with the concept of the herbaceous flavours by including herbs that talk to the specific dish that the juice is paired with.

Where did you grow up and how did it shape you as a chef ? I grew up in Northcliff, Johannesburg. Johannesburg is such a great melting pot of people and this has brought so many different influences into my life, allowing me to be exposed to different ways of thinking and looking at things. I’m now based between Fourways and Sandton. Tell us a little about your career journey up until now. I’ve had an amazing journey over the last 13 years. I’ve done many competitions and was part of the SA Culinary Team for a couple of years. I’ve wanted to own my own restaurant from as young as four or five years old, but after finishing school I actually wanted to study interior design. Instead, I got an internship at Gallagher Convention Centre (in those days it was called Gallagher Estate) and then I joined The Saxon Hotel in 2005. Since then, I’ve been privileged to work alongside some of the country’s best chefs, including David Higgs, Luke DaleRoberts and Rudi Liebenberg. What’s the concept behind Grei? Grei means ‘a society of people’ and as a colour, grey is colour without colour. This has been a huge inspiration in developing the look and feel of the space, and menu. It’s a calm, neutral space, which allows the smell, sight, colour and the detail of the food to really ‘pop’. We’re showcasing a subtle herbaceous angle and celebrating these flavors in the form of a six-course culinary journey.

How would you describe the newly launched Hibernal menu? Hibernal showcases a variety of flavours and Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

How does your relationship with Sought After Seedlings influence your dishes? I work very closely with Linda Galvad from Sought After Seedlings and together we plot the way forward for each season in terms of what I would like to have in the garden and what new things might be available. What’s your number-one guilty pleasure? Dad’s braai, mom’s version of bobotie and hummus.

textures that capture the essence of our highveld winter. I love winter and the bold flavours we are using throughout this menu. I feel that if winter had a taste, it has been perfectly emulated in Hibernal. Some of the star ingredients are Jerusalem artichoke, veal sweetbreads, short rib, nasturtiums, liquorice and rooibos.

What are your top tips for up-andcoming female chefs? Work hard, stay strong and don’t take everything to heart. Also, don’t be afraid to be different! WORK IT, GIRL! Essentials for every working woman

Avoid burnout Nothing says power like a power bank – literally. These nifty little companions are an absolute essential for working on the go. The Remax Mirror Power Bank (R499 from Takealot) is a great option. You’ll never have to lose any important work to a dead battery again – just plug the power bank into your phone or laptop when they need charging. This power bank is extra handy because its reflective surface acts a compact mirror. Not to mention the fact that the Rose Gold design is also really stylish. Who said accessories couldn’t be functional?

12

Bubbles and bubbly After the work day is said and done, every woman needs a chance to relax. Enjoy some time off by sipping some champagne in a tranquil bubble bath. Make it out of this world by chucking in an Intergalactic Bath Bomb (R69.50 from Lush) from Lush. Watch as the water turns to sparkling blue, giving your mind and skin a treat – because even career women enjoy a bit of glitter, right? Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Lady in red A killer red lip is an essential that is sure to brighten any womsn’s working day. MAC Russian Red (R130 from MAC) is a versatile option that also comes in a mini version, making it even easier to throw into your handbag or desk drawer. The matte formula of this lipstick means that it will last all day and that it’s less likely to smudge and end up on your teeth (which, let’s face it, is almost every woman’s worst nightmare!).

Be a green queen Whether you enjoy a cappuccino, matcha latte or just a good old cup of Five Roses, there’s no need to buy a plastic cup every time you need a drink. With so many amazing reusable cups on the market, it’s silly not to have one. Ecoffee Cup (R259 from Superbalist)) is a brand which offers lightweight cups made from sustainable bamboo fibre. They have a number of interesting and quirky designs available, from inspiring florals to skulls. If you’re worried about the hassle of having to carry around an empty coffee mug, you can get a Silicone Collapsible Coffee Cup (R133 from Takealot) from Takealot. That way, when you’re done with your drink, just press your mug into a compact ring and pop it into your handbag. Not only will you be helping to save the environment, you’ll also be saving money, as many coffee shops offer customers a discount for bringing their own cups.

If the bag fits... On the topic of bags, every working woman knows that having a great one is essential. It needs to be roomy enough to fit your laptop, structured enough so that your meeting notes don’t get crumpled (again) and it also needs to look cute. The Pebbled Shopper Bag (R449 from Superbalist) from Mango ticks all those boxes. Not only will this black faux leather bag fit everything you need, it will also match all of your work outfits. Its pebbled texture will give your outfit some visual interest and the gold hardware adds an element of luxe.

Women in the workplace is definitely the norm, but it hasn’t always been. So, for all you career girls out there, why not celebrate how far you’ve come this Women’s Day and treat yourself to some of these work life essentials?

f you’re in the market for long, voluminous lashes, you’ll be happy to know that Joburg is chock-full of beauty studios. I’ve tried many of them, but the most impressive so far is one right on my doorstep that I only discovered recently. A typical full set lasts three to four weeks – I’ve tried and tested this myself – so you won’t have to fret over curling or applying mascara! Flutter lash, brow and tanning studio gives the impression of elegance and serenity with grey walls and furniture, purple décor and comfy beds that are so soft you’ll probably fall asleep while one of the lash gurus use their pinpoint precision to give your eyes natural-looking fringe. The spot’s relaxing atmosphere, cleanliness, and polite and accommodating staff only adds to the draw.

Your lashes (choice of classic, volume or hybrid) are completely tailored to your specifications and eye shape and position, and prices range from R700 with a junior lash tech (over one years’ experience) to R1000 with a senior lash tech (over four years’ experience) for a two-hour full set application. If full-on glam isn’t your thing, I highly recommend the 90-minute ¾ set (R750 with a senior lash tech). Volume and hybrid lashes are an add on of R150 for a ¾ set and R300 for a full set. As if you needed more reason to book an appointment ASAP, Flutter also offers semi-permanent and permanent makeup, from top lash-enhancing liner and keratin lash lifts to microblading and ombre shaded brows plus Vinylux and Shellac mani-pedis and Norvell Spray Tans. Your genes

Sparks will fly when you enter this jazz and blues club…

AND WHAT THEY MEAN

DNAnalysis: what’s all the hype about? We don’t know about you HJ, but it seems the latest craze at the moment is DNA testing. So we wanted to delve a little deeper and find out for ourselves, was it worth the splurge and what was all the hype about? What is DNAlysis: South Africa’s premier genetic testing laboratory What’s their main focus: Health and wellness uniquely tailored to you. Custom designed DNA testing for chronic diseases, weight management, diet, skincare and much more What do they test: They test an individual’s genetics for an unparalleled insight into personal dietary and nutritional needs, and determine how they respond to medication.

What does it involve: a simple DNA test which uses a swab to collect cells from inside of your cheek. This is then mailed to the lab and your results will be provided in a few weeks What do you do with the results: provide the tools to accurately transition genetic results into realistic health solutions

24

Summary: So basically they’re testing our genes and defining how our genes predispose us to digest certain foods in specific ways, or manage how we lose or gain weight or how we react to medication. Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Why is this important: these tests will asses whether, for example, you have genetic variants associated with diseases like Alzheimer's or certain types of cancer. Or whether you are gluten or lactose intolerant. But the point of the tests is the intervention; these gene variants are not enough to cause disease on their own. They are risk factors that are modifiable through the right diet and lifestyle choices. How many tests are there: You can select how many tests you would like to have done, there is an option of health, sports performance, diet, oestrogen levels, your skins health, how you react to pain, how your body reacts to cardio and how your body processes certain statins, antidepressants, Beta Blockers and anticoagulants. What we found: DNAlysis is non-negotiable it is an absolute must! Think of it as an investment into your future and yes, although it might be

rather daunting to find out whether you’re susceptible to cancer or Alzheimer’s, wouldn’t you rather know now, alter your lifestyle to live healthier for longer? But you’ll have to dig deep because it’s all up to you. Whether it is changing up your exercise routine or not eating certain foods that cause discomfort or bloating or do not aid in digestion. We’re all for prevention, reducing intolerances and diseases and having a longer life expectancy. North Block,Thrupps Illovo Center, 204 Oxford Road, Illovo m 011 268 0268 K www.dnalysis.co.za

Words Bianca Spinner Image Supplied.

Who are they: The DNAlysis team is experts in their field and their focus is on quality and on health. They have an extensive network of healthcare practitioners who will interpret your report for you and provide actionable insights. The results are fragmented and you’ll find out what these results mean and where your future focus must lean towards.!

The Core Fitness Studio sits in a corner of the giant gym, hidden behind walls and no windows, you’ll not be sure of what to expect until you’re scanned through the turnstiles and enter the studio. While you could easily assume you’ve entered an underground night club, the treadmills, individual mats and weight stations remind you that this is, in fact, a gym class. Despite the lack of windows, ventilation is good and the nightclub lights will get the balls of your feet itching to dance. You’ll also not feel like you’re in a ‘fishbowl’ and be less self-conscious when you’re sprinting on the treadmill. t n a r u a t s e R THE MONTH OF

CAFÉ DEL SOL CLASSICO Lovingly old-school and classically Joburg

T

here are seemingly endless reasons to love Italian food: giant wheels of Parmesan, stylish antipasti, spirals of tagliatelle, crusty sourdough pizzas and hearty vegetarian options are just a bunch. Joburg is home to all sorts of Italian restaurants offering finely-crafted specialties – some draw from the traditional trattorias of the fashionable north and others from the rustic south – but there’s only one that suits every occasion, and that’s the family-ownedand-run Café del Sol Classico. Aspiring restauranteurs in Joburg should study this convivial Olivedale pioneer. Though it opened in 2007, Café del Sol Classico remains unsurpassed in the neighbourhood. Affable owners Mamma Luciana, daughter Chiara and son Ryan handle the inevitable wait (due to the limited reservations policy) with panache. The family has built a strong local following for their comforting Italian cooking, and Luciana plays the nonna role admirably at this modest spot – a throwback to the reliable, cheerful trattorias that used to define the East Village.

glass of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut and the angel hair-wrapped prawns. Fruity notes of apricot, pineapple, peach, pear, brioche and vanilla in the champagne complement the lemon-infused mashed avocado that the prawns are served on perfectly. Another starter that would be hard to improve on is the Italian primevera rolls: spring roll pastry filled with imported Parma ham, rocket and smoked mozzarella and then deep fried and served with a creamy white wine sauce. Pasta is really the best thing on the menu. Toothsome spaghetti strands are tossed in a generous jumble of vodka-flambéed salmon, leeks, asparagus and creamy Napoletana sauce, while a soothing carbonara features cylindershape penne gooey with a sauce made of cream, egg yolk, Parmesan, garlic and parsley plus real pancetta. Even simple pastas, such as the basil pesto with chicken strips, a dash of cream and a hint of lemon, are superb. And you’ll have no trouble finding a wine to match your pasta of choice – Café del Sol Classico’s list is one of the city’s best. Café del Sol Classico is also one of those rare Italian restaurants with desserts worth saving room for. Salt, not sugar, is the star of the fan-favourite salted caramel brûlée served with

popcorn ice cream. However, it’s the pavlova – husk meringue with its fine, sticky hull giving way to a velvety, supercharged vanilla cream and fresh berries – that cements the restaurant as the dessert whisperer of Joburg dining. As a plus, the service is swift and friendly – the waiters are well-versed on the menu and work the room as a team. Whether it’s for a casual get-together, romantic dinner or celebration, the next time you’re hungry, Café del Sol Classico is here to embrace the Italian culture’s favourite activity: eating. It’s a relaxed environment conducive to good conversation and everything’s splendido! The old-world charm of redand-white décor and flickering lamps plus quirky quotes and a host of awards adorning the walls may help explain why this 12-year-old honest-to-goodness Italian restaurant is still tough to get into on a Saturday night.

hile sipping on a glass of the finest Cinsault from the Swartland and being mesmerised by a breath-taking view, it’s impossible not to fall head over heels in love with our city of gold. It is right here at the brand new Kranz restaurant inside The Northcliff Boutique Hotel, where you will get a taste of the high life. But please do not expect fine dining, ornamental white tablecloths or a buzzing pretentious gaggle. Instead you’ll feel right at home, it’s like dining at your besties, if they owned the second highest natural point in the city. Now as we mentioned the view would knock your socks off, whether you visit for a luncheon or a dinner, it’s spectacular and reason enough to visit this shiny new eatery, fortunately the food is delicious too. Glamorously perched on Northcliff hill you’ll follow the windy roads and enter the intimate thirty-seater restaurant. It’s important to note: you have to book before you arrive! The best way to indulge at this restaurant is over a three course a la Carte meal. The menu is simple with five starter options and six main options. We recommend starting with the hearty South Indian Matar Paneer and the seared duck breast for mains or their signature oxtail ravioli. , Jaco Minnaar, the Northcliff operator adds “We are also proud of our diverse wine list of limited edition vintages from boutique South African vineyards hand-picked to complement each dish on our menu.” 10 Solution Close, Northcliff m 087 898 7856 1 www.thenorthcliff.com E @thenorthcliff Q @thenorthcliff Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Lerato's CORNER A candid review … SHUCKED - AN OYSTER BAR

O

ysters are well-loved by seafood loving-folks, so it’s big news that a dedicated oyster bar has opened in Joburg. Owned and run by the same twin brother team as The Royale, Shucked - An Oyster Bar occupies the space that was once Warm & Glad at Albans Square on Jan Smuts Avenue in Craighall. I popped in a few weeks after it opened to slurp up some gems of the sea on a Saturday afternoon. As soon as I stepped inside, I thought to myself that this is possibly the most discreet restaurant in the area. The tranquil scene inside – think pink walls, pink suede seating, hanging plants and dark food furnishings – is the antithesis of the bustle outside. The basic style of this oyster bar has a continental charm, while the plush bar carries a timeless ambience. The restaurant is tiny, so my lunch date and I were lucky to be seated at a comfortable table inside. We saw lots of people walk in and be seated at the bar or against the railing out on the balcony, which isn’t ideal when you’re about to splash serious cash on a fancy meal. We started off with a round of cocktails – I had the classic Singapore Sling and my lunch date had the Grasshopper. The cocktails were superb, but we were disappointed that they weren’t measured correctly, as they both arrived looking only three-quarters full. At R90 a Singapore Sling, I felt pretty ripped off, especially because the presentation was lacking too – both drinks were simply garnished with a mint leaf and mine was served with a plastic straw (seriously?). For lunch, we ordered a dozen oysters with a variety of different dressings plus the beer-battered kingklip and chips to let the freshest flavours of the sea shine. Shucked serves both fresh and grilled oysters – six fresh will cost you R150, while six grilled costs R165. If you opt for fresh, you’ll have 14 different dressings to choose from and if you go for grilled, you’ll have six. The oysters were delectable and presented some very interesting flavours, however, the kingklip we weren’t so sure about. The generous portion of fish was delicious and fried to perfection, but we weren’t convinced that this was actually kingklip. I’ve wined and dined at many top restaurants and never have I been served a piece of kingklip this size and found it to taste exactly like hake. After mains, we had mixed feelings about Shucked and the abrupt service wasn’t exactly helping, so we decided to skip dessert and call it a day. I concluded that while it’s easy to see why many appreciate the calm that is this new oyster bar and enjoy the seafood specialties at their leisure, it’s more of a novelty than anything else. If you’re looking for a new spot to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or have casual drinks after work, Shucked is worth checking out. Just don’t hold your breath because the food and drink offering isn’t as polished as you’d expect it to be – and don’t be shocked when a draught beer that will cost you R30 down the road will cost you R60 here (#justsaying). Joburgers love new dining concepts, but being ripped off? Not so much!

WOMEN WHO

DRINK TOGETHER... We drink wine all year round. But given that we’re celebrating women this month, we selected three extra special “lady” friends to drink with...

First, a drink with

Sophie

The lady you can count on

Ah, the Iona Sophie te’Blanche Sauvignon Blanc – how we love you, even though you’re one helluva famous lady who doesn’t exist. Now that’s a feat! This wine is possibly one of South Africa’s most well-loved Sauvignon Blancs. Sophie’s the girl you have known all your life and can really trust. She’s reliable, consistent and vibrant courtesy of some zesty lime, pear and fresh cut apple flavours. She brings playfulness to lunch and is always light and fresh – no matter how hard the day she had. Pairs well with: She loves a good salad, especially with some roasted baby tomatoes and rich feta, and she won’t say no seafood either. Fun fact: Sophie te'Blanche is actually the nickname given by those who worked on the vineyards who couldn’t pronounce Sauvignon Blanc and is the inspiration behind this loved wine, produced from grapes grown by dedicated farmers in Elgin and the Cape south coast. Price: Available at most outlets, but you’ll probably get the most bang for your buck from Markro at around R80.

Then, a drink with

Catherine Marshall

The lady you want to be

Oh, she’s a hit with any audience alright and definitely has you sit up straight when the sommelier or dinner party host invites her to the table. It’s hard saying no to a Catherine Marshall Pinot Noir on Clay Soils. She’s balanced and composed with a fruity touch of berries but seductive and silky too lingering on your palate long after she’s said goodnight. With grapes selected from two cool sites in the Elgin Valley and grown mostly in clay soils with high iron content, this wine has a blocky, textured tannin structure and earthy savoury notes. Pairs well with: A real South African, Catherine love a good meat dish from duck to lamb to beef. Fun fact: Catherine Marshall is the first wine in South Africa to be named after its actual female wine-maker. Price: From around R195 (depending on the year).

And lastly, a drink with

Madame Lily Bollinger

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied.

The woman you wish you met

Now this was a woman after our own heart. Lilly Bollinger, who married into the Bollinger dynasty and went on to run it from 1941 to 1972, agreed to a rosé under one condition: it had to be extraordinary. See why we love her? And that’s how La Grande Année Rosé was born. A blend like no other, this is like a creamy fruit mousse ranging from peach to grapefruit with a sweet shortbread biscuit after taste. Simply delicious! Pairs well with: LIFE! Everything. But if you must eat, pair these bubbles with crayfish, lobster or salmon. She’s also a fantastic match for Japanese cuisine and some of the milder Asian dishes. And, of course, what kind of bubble would she be if she didn’t pair well with a tart? Fruit tart that is! Fun fact: When asked when to drink champagne, Lily famously replied: “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.” Price: Definitely for special occasions retailing around R1,300 at Norman Good Fellows. Heads up – it\s not as regularly available as some bubbles snobs might like! Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

SLOW IT DOWN AROUND TOWN Living in Jozi doesn’t have to be all rush, rush, rush

Sometimes Joburg seems locked on turbo setting. From earning rent and squeezing in fitness classes, to studying and maintaining a thorough knowledge of celeb feuds, there just aren’t enough days in a week! Luckily, there’s a whole load of activities that press the pause button hidden among the speed and stress of Jozi. We’ve rounded up some slow-paced things to check out (no rush though!). It’s not surprising that you can find so many different styles of yoga in Joburg – the City of Gold has a reputation for diversity to uphold (greatest city in the world, you know). But there’s truly something for everyone and anyone – even those who prefer to take outdoor fitness classes can try yoga on the upper level of the pool deck at the DaVinci Hotel and Suites on the first Saturday of every month from 08h30 to 09h30. Tickets cost R115 each and include an invigorating outdoor yoga session plus a lavish complimentary breakfast at Maximillien. Grab your water bottle, pull on those spandex pants and hit the mat! Mindfully, of course. Time spent: a one-hour-long yoga class followed by an hour or two at brekkie and you’ll feel well and truly unplugged.

Poison

OF THE MONTH

Pompelmo Spruzzo Ingredients: 30ml Campari 30ml vodka Juice of half a grapefruit Mionetto Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut Grapefruit wedges and fresh mint leaves as a garnish

Mionetto Prosecco

Prosecco is rising to the top of the bubblies

Method: Blend Campari, vodka and grapefruit juice in a cocktail shaker, shake well and pour over ice in a pre-chilled glass. Top with Mionetto Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut. Serve garnished with grapefruit wedges and mint leaves. Cin cin!

A

glass of bubbly elevates any occasion and Prosecco – the premium Italian variant – is leading the growth in the sparkling wine category worldwide for a number of reasons. Prosecco is delightfully easy-drinking: crisper, slightly sweeter and more delicate than champagne, partly owing to the Italian ‘charmant’ production process which involves fermenting in steel tanks, rather than in the bottle (as with champagne). The lively, fruity, floral ‘glera’ grapes used for Prosecco are the second reason for its undeniably fresh taste.

Secondly, at R199 per bottle for the world’s best-selling Prosecco, Mionetto (finally available in South Africa), it’s now possible to enjoy an imported, premium glass of bubbly as an everyday luxury. Made in northern Italy in an area called the Prosecco DOC, which is protected by the Italian Alps, Mionetto is the archetypal Prosecco: feminine, sophisticated and classy. At approximately 80 calories per glass (as opposed to over 200 calories per glass of red wine), it’s swiftly becoming a favourite after-work aperitif or an accompaniment to summer brunches, sundowners on the beach and the obvious choice to sip while browsing at First Thursdays.

Available in three variants from select outlets selling high-end wines and Italian products, Mionetto Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut is a beautifully aromatic wine with notes of honey, black liquorice and acacia blossom, while the Prosecco DOC Treviso Extra Dry is a smooth, crisp wine that replaces the liquorice notes of the Brut with an unmistakable apricot fragrance. The Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Extra Dry boasts inimitable aromas and flavours of green apple, acacia blossom and full-flowering wisteria.

Thirdly, today’s consumers appreciate the tradition and craftsmanship of a beautifullymade, authentic drink. Mionetto elevates any occasion with a touch of Italian flair, offering bubbly lovers a taste of the Italian way of life. Established in 1887, it’s grounded in a longstanding tradition of uncompromising winemaking which appeals to the discerning drinker.

telling untold women’s stories The art of powerful South African story-telling

Historically underrepresented in the arts, women bring a nuance and sensitivity to the stage and screen that’s able to regale audiences in ways that men simply cannot. We caught up with award-winning South African playwright Amy Jephta, as she prepares for the Royal Court Theatre commission for the Edinburgh International Festival later this month.

Winner of the 2019 Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre Award, although a playwright by nature, Amy has also built a reputation as a filmmaker, activist and academic and has been part of continuing the charge in local and international initiatives to promote opportunities for women playwrights and tell other women’s stories. “Because women have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts, our voice always feels ‘new’ and our perspective is fresh. Good stories are rooted in your personal experience or speaks to something truthful in human nature.” With that context, it’s easy to understand why her feature film, ‘the Ellen Pakkies story’, has resonated so deeply with audiences.

Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

In 2007, the death of 20-year-old Abie Pakkies caused a stir in South Africa and the world. The most heart-wrenching part of the case was that the murderer was his mother, Ellen, which Amy took on. “I instinctively connected with the story and with Ellen, the mother behind the headline. I think it’s because she reminded me of every mother, teacher and aunt I’ve known throughout my life. I grew up in the Cape Flats and I think older women in the Flats have something in common – a resilience, a toughness about them, but also a kind of humour and joy. I found that warmth in Ellen and immediately had a connection to her and to the story.” In taking on the case, advocate Adrian Samuels was determined to prove that Ellen Pakkies had no choice. The story has traveled far and wide. Ellen premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was selected as the opening film for the Toronto Black Film Festival and was screened at the Afrykamera Festival (Poland), Seattle International Film Festival and Pan

African Film Festival (Los Angeles) before its national cinema release. Ellen was South Africa’s official submission to the 2018 Golden Globes for best Foreign Language Film. Despite long-standing naysayers who hark on about theatre being a dying art, Amy believes otherwise. “I don’t think we’ll ever not need live performance. It’s too vital. Added to that our country’s long tradition rooted in struggle theatre and the ability to make something out of nothing (we work on tiny budgets in difficult venues, and still make magic), theatre and the arts remains alive and well in South Africa. A representation of a unique intersection of cultures.” As a screenwriter, Amy has three feature film credits to her name including the Afrikaans romantic comedy Sonskyn Beperk (West Five Films: 2016), the LGBT drama While You Weren’t Looking (2015: Out in Africa) and the biopic Ellen: The Ellen Pakkies Story (2018: Moving Billboard Pictures).

ust back from National Arts Festival and in pre-production for her first feature film that will shoot later this year, Amy Jephta is also writing a play for Royal Court Theatre commission for the Edinburgh International Festival later and story editing and writing a 13part drama series for KykNet. She’s busy, to say the least!

eldom do you meet a CEO of a company who believes so fervently in the business he leads and in the lifestyle he endorses. Shabeer uses his vast knowledge of the South African recycling industry to educate everyone he meets on the importance and impact of recycling on our economy, our environment, and the livelihoods of those touched by it. In 2006, he made a strategic career move and took on the responsibility of driving and heading up The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC), a company committed to increasing glass recycling in South Africa whilst uplifting impoverished communities through job creation and skills development in the recycling sector. “We decided to run the Art for Glass Graffiti Competition and doing something a little different this year. By refreshing a few of our large glass banks with colourful art done by our graffiti finalists, they will become more visible, catching the eye of would-be recyclers and will ultimately become the starting point for more conversations on social media around glass recycling,” says TGRC CEO, Shabeer Jhetam. “

Meet

SHABEER JHETAM CEO of The Glass Recycling Company “Passionate” is the first word that comes to mind upon meeting CEO of The Glass Recycling Company, Shabeer Jhetam.

“We want to bring the fun into recycling and want people to feel that recycling is something cool they can do. Beyond having their Instagram-worthy artwork immortalised on a glass bank in Joburg, the top three competition entrants will also win amazing prizes, including cash prizes worth R 60 000, with the 1st prize being R30 000, 2nd prize amounting to R20 000 and 3rd prize nabbing the talented entrant a cool R10 000,” Jhetam concluded. As the industry leader in this area he believes in the infinite potential of glass to make a real and positive contribution to society, and so he and his team are focused on bringing the value of glass recycling to life, through enabling and inspiring communities to adopt positive recycling behaviors. Shabeer knows TGRC needs to have an influence on people when they are about to discard a bottle. “At that precise moment we need them to think about the importance and value of glass, and to consider recycling it instead.” he concludes. ith limited entertainment options compared to the likes of Broadway or Times Square, it’s very exciting to be invited to a brand-new spot in Mzansi. So, when we heard that National Geographic was previewing their new six-part mini-series, The Hot Zone (based on Richard Preston’s bestselling book of the same name), at Parkhurst’s new Egrek Cinema, we just had to tag along.

experience for an exclusive bunch of people and, well, that can only go one of two ways. The Egrek will either become the new select home for a bunch of Parkies who can afford R120 a ticket or it will struggle to get bums in seats. For the moment, there are a couple of commercial films showing like Rocket Man and Aladdin in a bid to get traction and generate interest, but we hear the long-term idea is to show more independent films (how exciting!).

The mini-series seems very interesting as an aside – starring Julianna Margulies of once ER fame –which documents the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the US in 1989. But back to the venue: barely three months old, the Egrek is a 30-seater cinema with fresh popcorn, a coffee bar and slush machine #winning.

In terms of location, it’s awesome to have a spot to go see a flick that doesn’t require going to the mall. Of course, there’s also an array of fabulous places to grab a bite before or after the show. More signage could help and shout out to venue for the ramps for wheelchair accessibility!

Slaying

ON STAGE Why your next event needs a female keynote speaker

In a not-too-distant past, many a conference or event programme resembled an 80s lawn bowling team. Well, we don’t see people clamoring for seats for the next Bowls SA Masters Singles Championship now, do we? But when Arianna Huffington comes out for a Discovery Leadership Summit in Sandton, it’s a different story altogether.

52

Know who you’re talking to Extensive research shows that group intelligence is increased when there’s a diversity in a room. It isn’t a difficult concept to understand. An all-male panel or lineup of speakers offers little value to your audience or event in today’s world – unless you’re addressing the bowls team. With diverse groups of people attending events comes a critical need for voices that resonate with and reflect that audience. It’s that simple. Today, not having a balanced representation, not having a woman on stage, is a liability for your conference and in short will turn people away. Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

The narrative has changed Yes, there was a time when an audience looked to a speaker for action – how to get things done! But now we have the Internet and Suzelle DIY for almost any ‘how to’ question. Audiences who live and operate in today’s collaborative and emotional economy need a different kind of help and motivation. They want advice and guidance on how to manage people, relationships and ego – and women are simply better poised than men to tackle the topic. Sharing is caring It’s not that men don’t reflect on lessons learned, it’s just that most women do it better. Oprah Winfrey, the undisputed queen of daytime talk television, has never shied away from sharing her failures and resultant insights, winning over her audience time and time again. Talking about your personal botches is more than an opportunity to teach lessons – it creates a platform for connecting people from all walks of life. Airing your failure is not quite the execution

many men consider it be. Just as you bounced back to tell your story, others will understand and ultimately draw strength from your experience. Stop. Collaborate and listen! It’s easy to spot the speaker talking at you rather than with you, especially when it comes to Q&A time. Many men have a script that they stick and are likely to steer any questions received back to that narrative to land their message. That’s understandable, but women are different. As inheritably better listeners, female presenters can pivot to transcend their notes or rehearsed words to sincerely consider questions asked and offer a meaningful response – and that’s ultimately what will bring people back to your event the following year.

Words Candice May Images Supplied

S

outh African businesses and professional conference organisers are catching onto the immense power and value of women when it comes to curating a meaningful lineup of speakers at a conference. Those who claim that the ‘pool’ of speakers is too small or that women don’t have the same impact on stage as men are talking big fat BS and need to rethink their strategy pronto.

Turning your

SPACE IN OUR SPACE Our guide to moving in together – almost seamlessly

Words Carlly Ritz Images Supplied

You like your gun metal couch with the pop of colour from your grandmother’s green scatter pillows. You admit that you’re emotionally attached to the framed photographs of every dog you’ve ever owned that line the passage of the wall. But now that your other half is moving in, it may be time to move things around a bit. Handle with care Moving in together is a big step in any relationship and can be a source of conflict if not handled carefully. You’re both used to living in a certain way, you both like your own things and you both have your own unique sense of style (well, hopefully at least one of you does). The best advice we can give you is to talk this one through. Discuss what you both expect and would like each step of the way. Go easy on each other’s sentimental items (one person’s glass ashtray is another’s great grandmother’s wedding gift from her fourth husband), but be willing to chuck out the mess and clutter that neither of you need – life-sized figurines, contraband and porn are fair game when it comes to the garbage pile. Start afresh This is the perfect opportunity for a makeover or spruce-up. Why not mix things up and level the playing field? Consider rearranging the furniture and combining your furniture and décor items to make a beautiful space that reflects both your styles and interests. It’s likely that one of you has couches that have seen better days

and the other has just bought two vintage tan sofas on sale – now that’s win! Why not sell the older fridge/washing machine/bed and use it to buy a new rug for the lounge that you both love This type of compromise and approach will also go a long way in determining how you deal with future conflict as a couple. Give each other space Nothing says ‘you’re kinda in my way’ like being given a bar stool to hang your clothes. Yes, we’ve seen it happen. It’s important that the partner moving in has adequate space for clothes and personal items. Divvy up the cupboard space equally or get creative with cool storage ideas, from funky shelving to old school cabinets. Think before you pee Yup, this is a metaphor (mostly). When you and your partner move in together, you can’t suddenly turn into a territorial Pitbull or the bratty kid who never shared. Living together means sharing everything –think time in the bathroom (#showerhour), who sits on the comfier couch and when (#shotgun) and, of course, who decides on the evening’s entertainment (#remotewars). Whether you work out a schedule, alternate each night or a flip a coin is up to you – as long as you make a plan and stick to it. On the topic of real peeing, however … always leave the bathroom the way you found it to avoid an unnecessary argument. Hello Joburg • August 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Life Baby South Africa has revolutionised the way we see infant mobility and the way we view this water healing concept. Here, we get to know Vicky, the owner and brainchild behind the Life Baby hydrotherapy concept who’s also a fierce female and an absolute inspiration.

What prompted you to open Life Baby? Opening a playgroup over eight years ago and noticing a significant number of children with low muscle tone and sensory problems due to not enough exposure to water as babies. Water helps increase sensory, gross and fine motor movements and has other benefits, from swim safety and skill profession, to increased vocabulary and problemsolving skills. We’re the first infant floatation centre in Africa. Give us a rundown on the benefits of floatation. Floatation assists in core stability and preventative maintenance for several developmental milestones. This technique also assists with colic, reflux, teething, congestion and constipation. Our aquatics and swim safety techniques follow a soft method of slow skill progression, while our one-on-one service helps each baby understand what movement they’re doing so they can slowly progress to understand each skill they’re doing in and around the water. This follows with our Peter Walker trained infant massage specifically designed for our babies struggling with colic, constipation, congestion and our babies delayed in crawling, walking or rolling. Let’s pretend we’re all first-time mums. Explain Life Baby to us in one sentence. A baby’s most critical stages of development are the first 1,001 days of life – Life Baby South Africa brings the perfect environment in preventative maintenance.

Did your own children also have early exposure to water? I have two children. My first born had colic for seven months and I wish that someone had shown me how to naturally strengthen my daughter’s tummy. My second born, on the other hand, was placed in the water from five days old. I saw huge differences in their developments and immunities as well as their confidence and swimming techniques in the water. What’s the most inspiring story you’ve ever encountered at life baby? The story of our little warrior named Phenyo, who was born with a rare form of tibial hemimelia. We had to raise funds to get her to America for doctors there to save her leg. She’s in the final process of recovery and will be returning home to learn how to walk and to have the best possible future we could get for her. Through this whole process, she’s been happy, strong and confident. Greenstone:

You say infants from two days old can benefit from the flotation method – how? As I just mentioned, a baby’s first 1,001 days are critical in their life stage of development. We believe in following a relaxed, holistic approach to assist in strengthening the tummy and other crucial areas they struggle so much with today. Their bodies are at a 90% less body weight in the water, so we use a soft air-filled device that allows maximum movement and mobility. We have an allocated timing per baby as it’s crucial not to over stimulate the baby or over expose them and have had over 50,000 sessions to date. Now that we’ve perfected this technique, we’d like to further educate our moms through proper qualified and trained Life Baby South Africa locations.
