he Royale SA is a Cuban paradise revealed. Having only opened its doors 4 weeks ago, this new eatery is based on Cuba in the fifties (before Castro, pre-communism and the revolution). Whether you dine in the courtyard under the ceiling plants, or sit inside under the cascading trees, there’s no other place in Joburg that offers this experience. Grab a seat at the eclectic bar section and order a drink. Beer drinkers might go for a Corona, but this bar is all about the rum - Bacardi rum to be exact. How about an oldfashioned rum style, a Bacardi mojito, or a refreshing rum and cola? We recommend the bloody Mary with a twist. The Michelada (Mexican Bloody Mary) is like a Bloody Mary; savory and spicy with a kick of corona. Or order your rum for dessert in the sticky waffle with rum sauce! Porkophiles rejoice! Everything is better with bacon, and this menu is jam packed with piglet gifts. Appparently the Mojo rubbed pork belly is to-die-for; slow baked in a sticky sour orange basting. The ham and cheese croquettes are deep fried favorites, and let’s not forget the chorizo fried rice. We ordered the cheese bean and rice, Cuban chicken, sweet and sour grilled squid and the seasonal veg. For herbivores, the owner’s developing a plant-based menu, so watch this space! Strictly speaking, they’re meant to be tapas style dining plates, but the portions are plentiful and its certainly value for your buck. You’ll probably party the night away… rum is on tap until 2am. Just saying. Open from Wednesday 11am for lunch and dinners through to 8pm on Sunday

The location is unique and distinctive because it’s based in a home-like dwelling. Comfortable and intimate, diners will thrive in such an intimate setting, which lends itself to its exclusive ambience and modern design. Each room is filled with artistic compliments and contemporary furniture. Chef Ence Willemse is the prodigy behind this brand; he’s the owner and cook, and offers a thoughtfully curated seasonal menu in a beautiful space. NCW is a fine dining eatery, with intimate nooks for private events, cocktail parties and functions. It has a stunning outdoor patio for birthdays and celebrations, and a lounge where you can sip on a glass of red and listen to the piano playing in the background.

Great food, great wine, great times! The food is what makes this restaurant purr, and we enjoyed their six-course dinner menu at R525 per person. Expect small plates because it’s about quality, not quantity. The Sweet Peas is a fine appetizer; a serving of pea puree, poached quail eggs and herb ice cream. The panna cotta is unstable in all the right places, and is served with fresh peaches, meringue and cardamom ice cream. Other dishes to look forward to are the pâté en croute, and the luscious crown roast chicken. The wine menu echoes the restaurant setting… it’s humble, with only four sparkling options, seven white options and seven red options. However, there’s a vintage wine cellar where you can pick your very own poison! The restaurant is open Saturday afternoons for sundowner sessions, including a classic margarita or a refreshing aperol spritz. On Sundays, you’ll relish in the Sunday feast (think smoked brisket, linguini pasta and roasted chicken pie), which is served to the table. rowing up on the farm in Zimbabwe cemented Chef Johannes’s love for the open country. However, it was during the annual holidays at Victoria Falls when he fell in love with the opulence of the five-star properties. He knew, in some way, he’d be involved in hotels one day – he just never guessed it would be as a chef.

‘I always wanted to be a book keeper…or an artist,’ says Chef Johannes. His dad was a book keeper and his family knew a well-known artist. It’s hard to imagine this passionate and creative young man balancing books, or lost in paintings. We’re very happy he wound up in the kitchen instead! He returned from school one day and discovered a pamphlet from the International Hotel School in his book bag. ‘I’ve no idea how on earth it ended up in there – no one even came to the school, but there it was…’ he says. He begged his parents to attend the hotel school’s open day in Durban, and the rest is culinary history.

The 40-seater restaurant serves contemporary cuisine amongst beautiful art works (many of them depicting Amy Winehouse – get it?), and overlooks the beautiful garden and pool. They grow their own herbs, fruit and veggies on site, and many of these feature on the menu – which changes quarterly. They even have a bee hive which delivers fresh honey!

Chef Johannes is crazy about his latest creation – the cucumber salad. It features three types of cucumbers pickled and prepared in different ways. Each has a unique flavour and is served with an apple and green olive salsa (featuring fresh fennel from the garden), and a mint and cucumber sorbet. The sun’s rays can cause noticeable changes to skin, like freckles, age spots, leathery skin, wrinkles, a blotchy complexion and skin cancer. Repeated unprotected ultraviolet exposure breaks down collagen in the skin, even when exposed to the sun for short periods. While decreased collagen production is part of the ageing process, in combination with sun exposure, the effect is detrimental. Sun damage can show signs of ageing as early as your twenties, but the real damage comes between the ages of 35 and 49. Youngsters should protect their skin early, even if they can’t see the damage sunburn causes. Good sunscreen is an absolute must! The best kind is a broadspectrum sunscreen to protect skin against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate the deeper layer of the skin, whereas UVB rays are responsible for the topical burning of the skin.

Factor (SPF) protects against the sun’s UVB radiation.

Approximately two tablespoons of sunscreen should be applied to the exposed areas of the face and body, with a dollop the size of a R5 coin to the face alone. A higher SPF (between 30 and 50) is ideal. As sunscreen washes and rubs off and the chemicals break apart in the sun, it should be re-applied regularly. For further protection, an oral anti-oxidant supplement such as Ovelle or Heliocare can be used, but it’s advisable to use these in conjunction with a topical product. Prevention is better than cure, but we can experience over-exposure. Fortunately there are treatments that can help counter the damage that may have transpired. Stimulating collagen production in the skin will restore the elasticity and return your skin's plump appearance. Specialized lasers and chemical peels are particularly effective in treating and restoring damaged skin. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ solution as each individual’s skin concerns are unique.
