t’s the month of love Hello Joburgers, and we’ve put a lot of love into this issue. Jan-you-worry is far behind us (finally!) and it’s on to bigger, better and more lovelier things! I’m a romantic – I’m not ashamed to admit that I love the idea of being swept off my feet and wooed. However, I’m not a big fan when it comes to Valentine’s Day, purely because I think love should be celebrated all the time, every day. In light of this, the Hello Joburg team and I decided to mix this up a bit with our February issue, AKA the Love issue. Usually it’s the women who get spoilt rotten for Valentine’s Day – but we’ve decided to focus more on the lads this month. In fact, we even asked a few guy friends for their ultimate date night ideas, and they didn’t disappoint. Whether you’re a foodie, a man of adventure or more of an inside kind of guy, our ideas will guide your girlfriend in the right direction. Speaking of the right direction, you’d be heading that way if you popped into our Restaurant of the Month – The Braai Room. Vegetarians may want to skip this part. This place is a meateaters dream come true. In addition to having an incredible, budget-friendly menu, The Braai Room by Country Meat has a deli, butchery and so much more on site. THE FEAST OF YOUR DREAMS

A 5-star experience at Aurelia’s

urelia’s is the pot of foodie gold at the end of the rainbow, nestled in the northern façade of the award-winning, gorgeous 5-star Peermont D’oreale Grande at Emperors Palace. When we give it 5-stars, we mean it. And one of those stars can be found in the kitchen.

African inspired nibbles in the food… a Rooibos tea crumble, honeycomb from Johannesburg and figs from the Western Cape. Not only is Aurelia’s beautiful, but it’s the perfect spot for a schmoozy business lunch, family outings and (more importantly) romantic occasions. The décor is all red, cream and gold, with hanging lights and a bar and island-style buffet area slap-bang in the middle. As you walk in, your eyes wander over the chairs and tables, across the bar and through the floor-toceiling concertina doors onto the patio. You can have your meal under one

The man heading up this divine place is Emperors Palace Chef De Cuisine, Justin Jonah – and golly, what a fun character he is. Born in Durban, he spent his childhood frolicking by the sea (lucky fish!) and admits that growing up by the ocean gave him an immense appreciation for fresh food. “You want to try maintain that sort of fresh integrity in food. So if you cook it, you don’t bombard it with a hundred ingredients. You just want to stay true to that freshness.” Despite wanting to be a carpenter as a child, Jonah soon discovered his love of food, and his desire to be in the kitchen. “Back in 2002, it wasn’t ‘cool’ to be a Chef. It was a pretty low paid job,” Jonah explained, adding that his mother was less than impressed with his career choice. “I took a chance, I decided not to go back to college. It’s been eleven years now and I’ve never looked back.” We’re incredibly grateful for that, and once you get a mouthful of his work, you will be too. His cuisine is inspired by his childhood memories, and all he wants to do is share that with the diners that visit this stellar spot. “A lot of the food, the menu items and the ingredients have been with me through my entire career. It’s a statement of where I am in cooking, where I am in my style of food and it really is a part of me on the menu.”

ello Joburgers, whether you love or hate them, braai’s are a big part of who we are as South Africans. The Braai Room has escalate this humble cuisine to new heights, and we honestly don’t know where to start…

The winner for us had to be the 350g fillet, cooked medium rare – it was incredibly soft and oh-so-juicy. We opted to have the potato and biltong salad on the side, and it’s the kind of salad Ouma would be proud of. Creamy and salty, thanks to the biltong – it went down a treat. We’ll admit, we took a bit of a leap ordering the Bloody Mary sauce (complete with a shot of vodka), but even that knocked our socks off in all the right ways. The chimichurri sauce that comes with every steak course had an incredible punch of flavour (use lightly!) and helps your tongue feel the texture of the meat. Simply divine!

The thing we love the most is about this place? They support local bakeries and whatever offcuts they can’t use and bread they don’t sell goes straight to charity!

For starters we had the trinchado potjie – served in a gorgeous miniature Le Cruset potjie pot, with crisp, freshly baked bread on the side. This serving of grilled rump cubes swimming in a hearty garlic, tomato, onion and chili sauce is the perfect dish for when winter sets in. It will literally warm you to your toes! You’re also lucky to get three slices of bread because that sauce is so scoopable. Another must-try is the hot Buffalo wings. you don’t. Twice baked and drenched in sauce, the wings are a bit on the spicy side but the accompanying blue cheese dressing with celery is the perfect compliment. Dunk away! After that, we were eager for our mains. First up, the bacon and brie burger, topped with pickles, red onion and tomato and served with hand-cut chips. Brie is a pretty strong cheese, but there was the ideal amount melted between the delicious patty and crisp bun. And those chips… to-die-for!

WHAT: The good old picnic is a romantic, private and economical date idea. WHERE: You could do it in your garden. However, Joburg has some lovely spots, like Kloofendal - a cultural heritage and eco-tourism facility in Roodepoort. Just 25 kilometres from the city centre and about 8 kilometres from Soweto, it’s a worthwhile outing. The Reserve is home to duikers, mountain reedbuck, hedgehogs and dassies, there’s a stone amphitheatre with picnic and ablution facilities, and walking trails.

Weights and Measures is a highly engaging, traveling public art project, conceived by Bradley McCallum, which examines international justice through the means of portraits. In attention grabbing detail – the exhibition is constructed of large-scale oil paintings of defendants, photographs of justice practitioners and audio installations of witnesses and the voices of victims seeking justice. McCallum’s exhibition will challenge you to think critically about the legacy of international tribunals, the issues facing the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the predicaments central to genocide, atrocity crimes and human rights abuse. The exhibition will debut in South Africa, before travelling to countries that have experienced war crimes, and culminate in The Hague, the home of the ICC.

A Pile of Stones is composed of a body of work that protests the actions of ISIS, and although capturing the horror, also weaves in the sadness and reluctance of those gathered watching the incidents unfold. Life behind the wheel of a Ford Everest 2.2

It’s as simple as popping the car in neutral, and engaging the required buttons. Now a slight release of the pedal and the car guides itself up and down the hill - all you have to do is steer. We had a few hair-raising moments on the 4x4 course, when all we could see was the sky, but our trusty Everest scaled the hills in no time at all.

Getting to drive the manual and automatic versions was the best of both worlds, as we often get used to driving one specific type of vehicle. Did we mention that we also got to do a proper 4×4 course in the car? Highly exhilarating!

Boasting seven seats, and in-car sensors that reduce external ‘white’ noise – we comfortably fitted all our luggage in to the boot by folding down the two back seats, and enjoyed a really quiet drive. We didn’t even realise it was so quiet until someone from Ford mentioned the sensors. The lane sensors are also super handy. Should you stray from your lane, the car will warn you, as well as when someone is approaching in your blind spot, or getting too close to you. You’ll receive a dashboard notification,

allowing you to take the necessary precautions to avoid a collision or other swerving drivers. We’re the first to admit that we don’t know much about torque and engine sizes, but we do know what a smooth ride is. And this is it! Cruise control is a massive plus – no more stressing about those pesky cops hiding under every bridge or behind every bush. The Everest plots your speed, and helps you keep it there.

The Ford Everest 2.2 also comes complete with a tow bar so you can take your jam-packed trailer, your boat, quad bikes, or even your horse box along with you! Now make no mistake, it’s not just a ‘pretty’ 4×4 – it literally has all the latest technology you need to get you over the steep speed bumps outside your local school, as well as over 45 degree hills if you enjoy ‘roughing it’ a bit.

Mondiall Kitchen & Bar - V&A Waterfront Having just launched their summer menu, Mondiall Kitchen & Bar has been operating for three years and is beautiful and serene. It's set in a contemporary Brasserie style which means the restaurant is casual and informal, but remains upmarket. Restaurateur Patrick Symington, of Cape Town’s Café Dharma and Asoka fame, says that the Mondiall formula remains unchanged, and will continue to offer sophisticated, but casual brasserie-style dining experience with refined comfort food. Think of it as a modern farmhouse - collared shirts with slipslops. Their sophisticated culinary eatery is much loved, especially with their rolling view of the water’s edge, as well as Table Mountain. It truly is a great place to unwind and indulge. And indulge we did! For mains we dived into the creamy, melt-in-themouth risotto of the day - authentic Italian style mushroom risotto which was (cooked al dante) to perfection. We adored the spice crusted seared tuna which was jolted with a romesco sauce, crushed new potatoes and a fresh, zesty gremolata. We regret not trying their legendary 100% Wagyu cheeseburger served with gherkins, umami ketchup and hand cut fries. Be sure to leave space for pudding. Their sweet delicacies are all encompassing. Think Rooibos and honey crème Brule, lime meringue with coconut and almond shavings and fresh strawberries, surrounded by a decadent lime custard and a peppermint crisp parfait with flaky, buttery shortbread crumb. Complete your Mondiall meal with their Black Insomnia - the strongest coffee in the world- which comes served in the traditional way as well as a cold-brew Black Nitro.

Franschhoek - wine down in the wine lands Anthonij Rupert

This wine estate is a great excuse to let all your city woes go and embark on a fairy-tale like experience. Anthonij Rupert Estate began in 1982, but the original farmhouse was built around the 1830’s. The farmhouse embodies tradition, embraces history and adds to the distinctive nature of the property. Upon entering the estate, you’ll feel enthusiastic about its natural beauty, rose and herb gardens, evergreen trees, olive groves and of course, the vastness of the vineyards. With so much to explore, we recommend booking a glorious high tea (R180 per person), as well as a wine or sparkling wine pairing.

Whilst sipping on some red nectar, we learnt all about the Anthonij Rupert wine range. There are five; The Protea, The Terra Del Capo, The Cape of Good Hope, the flagship Anthonij Rupert wine range, The Cap Classique range L’ormarins, and also the Litchi Eau de Vie, which is a brandymeets-grappa-style white spirit. Begin with a lavish lunch, served in the Terra del Capo Tasting Room. Surrounded by glass doors, you’ll be able to witness the winemaking process while you nibble on a few tapas style dishes. The peach and plum caprese salad with basil and bocconcini is reason enough to visit the estate. Busting with summer flavors, freshness and elegance, it’s lip-smacking! Try the cold smoked olive oil poached Franschhoek trout with candied shaved fennel and pink peppercorn crème fraiche – it’s presented under a glass of smoke and magic, and every bite should be salvaged. P.S. Don’t forget to try one of their cocktails - especially the Litchi Mojito with their beloved L’ormarins Litchi Eau de Vie, fresh mint and crushed ice. It’s tempting not to go back for seconds. Stellenbosch - frolic through the wine lands Hartenberg

We like to think of ourselves as wine aficionados. Not only does it sound super chic, but lately, we just can’t get enough of the vintage. So when we heard that Hartenberg Wine Estate, which has over a hundred species of birds, offered picnic experiences, we just had to try it out for ourselves. This 180 hectare estate was established in 1692, and when you stand before the gigantic wooden cellar doors (the oldest in South Africa, by the way), you can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia. There’s something extremely special about this estate because there’s heritage. Here lies tradition, and it’s all encompassing. Johann Van Der Merwe, the destinations manager, kindly took us on a private wine cellar tour, where they store and mature wine underground. They also offer private events and functions in this exclusive space. Don’t fret Hello Joburgers, there’s underground heating available because the cellar is glacial-like, especially during the summer months. As you enter this dreamlike space you can’t help but notice the twelve glass art pieces throughout the walls of the cellar. The pieces showcase the twelve steps of the original winemaking process. The estate has deep-seated roots in history, and with such pride for their story, we couldn’t wait to taste some vino. Our absolute favorite has to be The Gravel Hill Shiraz, which is also their flagship wine. We were spoilt with the year 2006 - with its spicy notes and tangy, aggressive tannins, it was perfect and complex due to its bitter qualities. Another treasured choice is the Eleanor Chardonnay - this wine is wooded and creamy, and because the grapes are handpicked you can taste its excellence. This wine is also extremely cherished because it was named after Eleanor Finlayson, who worked the fields of Hartenberg and had an incredible passion for the vineyards.

4 Hermanus - explore the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Bouchard Finlayson This boutique winery is certainly worth visiting because it’s just an hour and a half outside of the main city and not only does it serve some of the finest wines in the Cape, they also serve one of the best cheese boards you’ll ever have the pleasure of devouring. What we love most about this estate is its winemaker, Peter Finlayson. Peter has such a wealth of knowledge and a passion for his trade that it’s impossible not to fall in love with it too. It’s no wonder this estate is well known for producing world-class wines. You can’t leave without tasting some of the flagship wines in this pioneering wine valley. The Hannibal 2014 is called a ‘symphony of flavors’ for a good reason – it’s rich, full bodied, and jam packed with character and refinement. It’s a cut above the rest. On the white side of life, the Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay 2015 is glorious - unwooded and makes for a wonderful alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. Not too sweet, not too tart… it’s the perfectly balanced wine. However, the crème de la crème has to be the Galpin Peak 2013 Pinot Noir, which has received numerous awards. It’s that smell you get from freshly fallen damp leaves, you’ll taste sweet berries and black cherries, piquant and lovely.
