Well, we’re here to tell you there’s not a thing to feel bad about! It doesn’t matter if you ate ‘til you popped, danced ‘til you fell over or simply sat around, soaking up the sun… it was totally worth it. Diving head first into the pages of our fresh January issue is also totally worth it. Going along with the ‘new’ theme, we’ve found two hot eateries that you’ve got to try! Roxanne’s Rum Eatery has become a smash hit (divine cocktails), and Chef James Diack has opened a new delicious venture called Il Contadino. Need we say more?

NOTE In addition, our shopping section is bursting with funky, fun summer essentials. Think swimsuits, popsicles, and so much more. Did you know 92% of the produce comes from the farmers around Magaliesberg, as well as his Diack family farm based in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountain range? Chef Diack has struck gold with the location in Parktown North, and his latest venture is Il Contadino restaurant. This intimate, refined neighbourhood-style eatery is so lovely, with its rustic charm and modern-day setting.

hen you hear the words ‘Chef James Diack’ in the culinary realm, you know you’re in for something special. Special because he always ensures his passion and precision are behind every dish, and because he believes in ethical eating, sustainability and giving diners the freshest, ethically grown produce available.

It feels like a place you’d find on the streets of Italy; old world yet modern, upmarket but comfortable. Its inviting and unpretentious attitude welcomes you with open arms. We suggest you order the tranche of organic heirloom pumpkin; coal roasted and served with pan fired oyster mushrooms, sumac, red onion and bulgur wheat, all topped with a delectable nutmeg and parsley crème. It’s a plant-based dish, but don’t fret carnivores, it’s hearty and wholesome. Made from scratch with duck eggs, the gnocchi pesto is another firm favorite, generously portioned and velvety smooth in texture. Yum!

TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING RUM at Roxanne’s Rum eatery!

stormy, or light and sweet, name it, she has it. She also so bigheartedly offers Prosecco on tap! Begin the evening off with a shooter because we’re sadists like that. There are seven rum based shooters to choose from. We recommend the Happy Flapper with Mhoba white rum and banana liqueur. If you’re taste buds tingle more to the bitter side, try the Bitter Lady with white rum, grenadine and lime juice. Prefer to sip your rum? We recommend the Diplomatico on the rocks, or the Spytail Ginger Rum. Spicy, tangy and a boozers delight! P.S. The food is also delectable, from their black bun gothic beef burgers and the tantalising tacos, to their entrancing black waffles, Roxanne spanks all the right spots. Why limit happy to an hour? Let Roxanne remind you what it’s like to live. Let her in, let her out!

I’ve felt the pressures of fighting two battles trying fit into a ‘man’s world’, and to be taken seriously - all while fighting a battle of feeling disempowered through women who compete with one another, instead of supporting, encouraging and empowering each other. Joburg Theatre brings you

THE COLOR PURPLE

T

he South African première production of the Tony Award-Winning Musical, The Color Purple will be wowing audiences at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre from 31 January … and you do not want to miss it!

The musical will be produced by Joburg Theatre and Bernard Jay, and will have an all-star South African team. Chief Executive Officer of Joburg City Theatres, Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema is excited about the city’s foremost stage hosting and co-producing what is sure to be the major theatrical event in South Africa’s 2018 calendar. The Color Purple is based upon the 1982 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker, and the 1985 Warner Bros / Amblin Entertainment Motion Picture, directed by Steven Spielberg. The musical The Color Purple, was originally produced on Broadway in 2005 by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, Roy Furman and Quincy Jones. The recent Broadway revival enjoyed great success, aided by its major Tony Awards in 2016.

Words Supplied

The book and musical arrangements from the Broadway revival will be used in an otherwise new and original staging by director Janice Honeyman, at Joburg Theatre. This sensational show will showcase the talents of a dedicated and talented South African creative team, cast and band. The Color Purple is not just the story of a poor, pregnant 14-year-old with nobody to talk to but her sister and God. It’s an inspiring family saga that tells the unforgettable tale of a woman who – through love – finds the strength to triumph over adversity, and discover her voice in the world. Set to a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, it’s a story of hope: a

testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life. Executive producer of the South African production, Bernard Jay explained that the musical does not shy away from the brutal realities of its origin. “It addresses themes of sexism, racism, the disruption of traditional gender roles, women’s rights and sisterhood – themes with which South Africans live and grapple on a day-to-day basis. The Color Purple, although a vitally important contribution to African American history, will be startlingly relevant to today’s theatre audiences in South Africa.” You can expect to see Didintle Khunou in the role of Celie - a caring and gentle girl whose resilience is truly miraculous and ultimately a tribute to humankind. Lerato Mvelase will be playing the role of Shug Avery, the archetypal blues woman, with her earthy wisdom and singer lifestyle. Didintle and Lerato join a talented all South African cast, featuring (in alphabetical order) Zane Gillion, Sebe Leotlela, Dolly Louw, Andile Magxaki, Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri, Venolia Manale, Namisa Mdlalose, Phumi Mncayi, Neo Motaung, Tshepo Ncokoane, Thokozani Nzima, Funeka Peppeta, Aubrey Poo, Senzesihle Radebe, Lelo Ramasimong, Zolani Shangase, Ayanda Sibisi and Lebo Toko. Jay thought it would be a good idea to collaborate with RADA to create awareness around the issues raised in the story of The

Color Purple. RADA is a non-profit company that aims to take positive, meaningful and effective action to combat life’s atrocities, many of which are addressed in the play. “I want to inspire people beyond watching a story of the human spirit. By collaborating with RADA, we aim to create further awareness of these issues and atrocities against women, and hope to give people the courage to fight and overcome their own nightmares,” he explained. The producers advise that this musical may not be suitable for children under ten years of age. NEED TO KNOW DETAILS: Preview performances start from 31 January. Official opening night will take place on 4 February, with the show running until 4 March. Tickets start at R240. For group bookings of 10 or more, please contact the theatre directly. 1 011 877 6853/6815.

COME FOR THE FOOD,

stay for the fun!

T

he word ‘parliament’ brings many things to mind. However, once you’ve ascended the circular staircase into Parliament Restaurant in Parkmore, it will conjure up mouthwatering memories of meat sizzling on an open grill...

This is one of Parkmore’s hottest afterwork drinks spots, and on a Friday evening, it’s pumping in a ‘this food is divine; these drinks are awesome, and these people rock!’ kind of way. The entire vibe is casual and unpretentious; it’s all about having a good time, complimented by an even better meal. They specialize in gourmet braai food, so expect deliciousness. The décor is raw; copper accents, bare-brick walls with concrete counters, and a bold green and black mural that demands your attention. Fantastic old-school tunes waft through the speakers, as your attention is inevitably drawn to the understated wrap-around bar, and its

impressive display of poisons and cocktail specials. Curious diners can watch their meat being cooked on that open flame (all the food is!) as the smells filter through the open kitchen and into the venue, making mouths water! We happily got our fingers dirty with the Jack Daniels BBQ chicken drumsticks with kimchi aioli. Sticky and sinfully good, the chicken was tender on the inside, with that perfect charcoal crunch you’d expect from gourmet braai food on the outside. We opted for a side order of the beef fat fries, served with a lemon garlic aioli, and Hello Joburgers… These are a food revolution! Perfectly spiced and fried in – yup! You guessed it – pure beef fat; they’re crispy, delicious, completely indulgent chips from heaven. The temptation was too much… we had to try the mussels cooked in a vodka Pomodoro salsa, served with freshly baked bread. What a treat! The mussels were steamed open perfectly,

succulent, soft and oh-so-saucy! The vodka Pomodoro is fragrant and punchy, and when they say freshly baked, they mean it! A delectable puff of steam was let loose when we broke open that bad boy, and every crumb was used to soak up that divine salsa. We highly recommend that you opt for the doughnut puffs and dark choccie sauce for dessert, or dive into the Rocky Road, chocolate ice cream and orange segments… Divine! Upstairs, corner of Victoria Avenue and 11th Street, Parkmore. 5 www.parliamentrestaurant.co.za 8 info@parliamentrestaurant.co.za 1 011 783 1467 t @ParliamentResta f @parliamentrestaurant @parliament_restaurant Hello Joburg • January 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

This spot is perfectly described in a single sentence on their website. ‘Much like the traditional inception of Parliament, our restaurant stands as a bastion of free speech, an outpost for moral debate and a place for members to get a little rowdy,’ – and how right they are!

chef of the month MATTHEW FOXON Executive Chef at 54 on Bath Hotel

A

sense of humour and a cool pair of colourful socks can get you through anything, including an interview with the Hello Joburg team! Executive Chef Matthew Foxon has an infectious laugh, one we heard a bit during our chat with this dynamic man who runs the kitchens at the 5-star Tsogo Sun property, 54 on Bath in Rosebank.

The kitchen works on a fully sustainable policy – one of those being ‘nose to tail’ (using all parts of the animal with minimal wastage), as well as supporting artisan farmers and producers. The need to purchase responsibly, and finding suppliers that work in the same way is paramount to Matthew and his team.

18

Matthew spent the bulk of his childhood running around the back of house at The Durban Royal Hotel, as a family friend was the chef there. Matthew recalls being about 7 or 8 years old, and getting under the feet of the pastry chef who was baking his birthday cake at the time. Of course, he got yelled at, and some choice words landed in the tirade. Young Matthew thought this was the coolest thing ever. He laughs delightedly to himself at the memory. Hello Joburg • January 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

After moving up to Johannesburg, Matthew attended the International Hotel School in Illovo and spent a lot of time in the kitchen doing his in-service training, which is pivotal to being proficient in the kitchen. “This industry is not only what you know, but more how well you can deliver on it,” he explains. He’s been at the hotel for just over a year, having previously worked in London. He came back as he wanted to give something back to the chef industry in South Africa, and he (of course) missed the beautiful weather!

“Make it nice or make it twice” is his favourite quote; one that’s quite apt for a hotel that serves the best - not only in food, but in everything they do. Matthew’s current favourite dish on the menu is his Tuna Tartare starter. It comes served with a deliciously tangy lime and tequila dressing, and homemade tortilla chips. Two thumbs up from us, that’s for sure! 54 Bath Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg 1 011 344 8500 5 www.tsogosun.com/54-on-bath

Words Heather Hook Images Khanyi Mlaba & supplied

Things that inspire and fuel Matthew, are being able to be creative in his chosen field, working with passionate people and being able to give on-the-job training to young talent. Finding new suppliers that fit in to the ethos of his kitchen can be challenging, but he considers it to be rewarding.

D

ayne Levinrad grew up in his mother’s delis and restaurants, so when he moved to Australia in 2012, he followed his calling… Working as a barista, Dayne learnt almost everything he knows at Harry’s; Bondi Beach’s busiest coffee shop. He was then head-hunted for Pablo and Rusty’s, to work under World Barista Championship’s Head Judge, Saxon Wright. Consulting in Los Angeles and Brazil, it wasn’t long before Dayne made his way back to Johannesburg to open something of his own.

In the heart of Sandton, Parc Fermé offers a chic yet traditional culinary experience. Superb wine, outstanding Afro-Fusion dishes and excellent service await you.

+27 (0) 11 245 4846 parcferme@parcferme.co.za 8 Maude Street, Sandton Central, 2146

The Grind, affectionately known as Dayne’s Coffee Shop, is his passion project, and went from concept to launch in six weeks! A clever play on words, Dayne understands the grind in both senses of the word, having prepared some 1000 cups of coffee a day. He prides himself on having built a loyal following of regulars, who he knows by name, and who can order their usual via Whatsapp. Speed of service and consistency is Dayne’s secret, and The Grind serves a selection of healthy meals, freshly prepared in-house. The popular protein muffins, served with almond butter and raw honey, sell out daily.

Words Taryn Louch

Dayne has a small, passionate team who offer every patron a unique experience; believing in the power of making or breaking someone’s day and preparing every cup accordingly. This is one of Dayne’s greatest rewards as a restaurateur. Dayne’s blend of black gold is the Magic Grind, comprised of a double Ristretto and ¾ flat white; which he would love prepared by World Barista Champion, Matt Perger. Going against the grain, Dayne developed his #coffeeinacone concept before opening his doors to The Grind. Supplying over 300 stores globally, Dayne maintains there is always a coffee in a cone kind of day. The final ‘Shisanyama showdown’ event took place on 10 December 2017, and was an explosion of delicious Shisanyama tastes, complemented by ice cold Windhoek Beer and great entertainment. Popular local chef, television personality and a judge at the event, Chef Benny said that each finalist brought their absolute best, but there could only be one winner. “Imbizo came fully prepared, they listened to their customers and knew exactly what to deliver. THE RENEWAL INSTITUTE REVEALS the importance of sleep

While we sleep our bodies release growth hormones, which is essential for the restoring of our bodies in general and helps stimulate cell turnover, which contributes to glowing, healthy skin. After a few nights of interrupted or inefficient sleep, the skin is one of the first places where it shows. Sleep deficiency can also cause emotional and irrational behavior, and has been linked to depression and even suicide.

Getting enough sleep is one thing, but getting enough deep, restorative sleep is the catch.

stress and causes favorable neurochemical changes in your brain. Avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime, however as it can rev you up and keep you awake.

• Digestion of large meals consumed too close to bedtime can interfere with sleep. • Avoid bright lights and electronic screens for at least an hour before bedtime. • Avoid surfing the net, checking your phone, watching TV, or listening to music in bed. If you use the space only for sleeping, your brain will associate it with sleep. • Make sure your bed is comfortable, the room temperature right and that the space is dark and free of disturbances.

But what if you follow these tips and still feel exhausted when you wake up? Skin Renewal suggests getting some expert advice on your sleep patterns. With sleep being one of the most essential aspects of health, the Renewal Institute – which consists of Renewal Institute, Body Renewal, Health Renewal, Brain Renewal and Sleep Renewal - invested in a dedicated overnight Sleep Clinic at the revamped Morningside branch. Patients are offered two options - 1. to assess their sleep patterns during a home study, with the data being stored and analyzed afterwards or 2. to sleep over in the luxurious facilities while being monitored on a full Polysomnograph (PSG) device to provide a customized sleep assessment. In both cases, once the data is analyzed, treatment options are discussed to ensure the road to a good night’s sleep and better health.

READY, SET, PARK! What: Stop the presses! We’re signing up for the weekly Saturday Parkrun this year – bonus, it’s free! Parkrun is a non-profit organization that gives local communities an opportunity to take part in free, weekly, timed 5km runs or walks. Yay right? Why: If ever there was a need for strength in numbers it’s when you exercise. Annoying friends who do spinning or yoga classes have told us that ‘exercising in groups improves consistency and duration.’ And no one wants to be the no-show to a committed group activity. It’s easy to pull out of a solo visit to the gym. And for some people, it’s a great way to meet new people… #how-Imet-my-lover! Where: Every parkrun takes place in the great outdoors and surrounds; whether it’s at a park, along a beach front, or through a beautiful reserve. Anyone of any ability and any fitness level is welcome at the events, and even the pups are welcome, provided they are sociable and on a lead. 5 www.parkrun.co.za

A DAY (OR TWO)

IN JOZI The New Year edition

Words Carly Ritz

I

t’s time for the ‘new year, new me’ sing-song that we all hate (but are secretly aspiring to). We’re of the opinion that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time, so while we’re not entering marathons this month (just yet), we are going to introduce a little more activity…

BREAKIE IN YOUR ACTIVE WEAR What: After a lekker 5km run, you’ll have earned yourself a few Discovery points - and a delicious breakfast, in your exercise gear! You know, so people know you’re active and feel inspired to do the same. Where: This month’s theme is an old favourite, summer side-walk spots. We’re holding onto that festive feeling for as long as we can, with a dollop of culinary nostalgia. Fournos Dunkeld is an old side-walk favourite and firm favourite (bar the fishy smell that occasionally wafts up from the Fisherman’s Deli). For those kicking off the new year on a health note, we highly recommend the carb free rosti made with cauliflower, salmon and cream-cheese. 5 www.fournos.co.za

Service Station is another favourite in Melville (circa 1999). We’ve been eating their French toast with berries for as long as we can remember. There’s also a variety of local and imported cheeses, anti-pasta, fair trade coffee, home-made ice-creams, artisanal meats and delicious readymade take home meals! 5 www.servicestationcafe.co.za THE HARD CHILL What: Don’t get all critical on us – there’s only so much physical activity one can do in a day. So, after a busy morning (as recommended above), we reckon a hard-earned chill for the rest of the day is definitely allowed. We’ll make it easy for you, here’s what you need… 1 x couch 1 x Netflix account - 5 www.netflix.com 1 x Uber Eats app - 5 www.ubereats.com Hello Joburg • January 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Since day 1, Nasrec has been the home to ULTRA SA in Joburg, and will once again play host to this incredible music show. The stellar line-up includes the return of musical heavyweights Armin van Buuren and Hardwell, but the festival has certianly upped the ante by adding headliners Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Afrojack and Dubfire to the mix. Did we mention that Black Coffee, Carnage, and Mala will also be bringing the house down? And that’s just the ones we know about! There’s plenty more to come. When we said this was unmissable, we were not joking.

STARRY, STARRY NIGHTS… in Welgevonden

T

he real heart of the Waterberg district lies at Welgevonden private Game Reserve. The reserve boasts 37,000 hectares of diverse landscapes, geology and a plethora of South Africa’s wildlife. Initially a conservation area in 1993, this ecosystem ticks all the boxes for an authentic African experience…

rivers, water ways and spectacular sunrise and sunsets.

Like sentinels guarding the Waterberg, we were welcomed by a majestic journey of giraffes, followed by a dazzle of zebras. The area is generously scattered with wildlife. This place offers such breath-taking views, it’s no wonder the animals never want to leave!

A nature enthusiasts delight, a birdwatcher’s paradise, and an authentic African safari experience, there’s no reason we won’t be back.

Just two and a half hours outside of Joburg, Camp Ndlovu forms part of The Residence Portfolio with their sister property, The Residence, being right on our doorstep in Houghton. This safari hotel is brand new, opening its doors in October 2017. We were part of the very first media group to visit this stellar property, where the winds blow gingerly in the sticky afternoons, and the stars dazzle at night. It’s a recipe for quintessential luxury!

At Camp Ndlovu, the team of staff always go the extra mile, never parting with their extra special touch. This is most evident in the beautiful cuisine prepared by Chef Lawrence.

Hello Joburgers, this isn’t your stereotypical bush lodge - this is something far beyond the ordinary. The lodge has a luxurious spa, outdoor gym and five villas, private and exclusive, nestled amongst the indigenous trees. Each air-conditioned villa has its own plunge pool, outdoor bath or shower (or both), and an outdoor lounge area and deck. The villas are mammoth and magnificent, and a royal room calls for a larger than life bed; a king extra length with a lounge and fireplace.

FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET

Y

ou may or may not agree with us Hello Joburgers, but we believe the only way to have a true, African safari experience is to go camping. We’re not talking about setting up tents in the rain, and eating baked beans straight from the can… we do camping in style, and with a lot of help from Tented Adventures.

Is there anything better than waking up to the sounds of birds and cicadas, snug in your bed, with the untamed African bush just a step outside your door? Well, maybe not a door… more like the flap of a raised canvas tent, fitted with twin beds and luxurious linen, ample lighting, fans, carpeted floors and even electric blankets should the nights get a little chilly. This is Tented Adventures, and it will change your life.

46

Haven’t heard of them? Then you sure are missing out! Tented Adventures makes your entire camping experience easy, incredibly comfortable and completely unforgettable. There are two camps to choose from; one in the Manyane Resort, Pilanesberg National Park and another in the Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, Kruger National Park. We packed up our troubles and headed to the Pilanesberg camp for three Hello Joburg • January 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

An authentic safari experience

days of well-deserved rest and relaxation. A short drive (2.5 to 3 hours) from Johannesburg lies a haven of nature, a masterpiece of beauty… the bush. We were welcomed with huge smiles from Shaun Coetzee, our super friendly and all-knowing camp master. It’s Shaun and his all-man team of Thomas, Thabang and Obakeng (aka Benny), who run the entire camp – which consists of eight safari tents, capable of housing two people at a time. These tents are within walking distance of communal bathrooms, neighboring campgrounds and the Tented Adventures tented communal lounge and dining area. Here is where all your adventures begin… Waking up at 5am has never been easier, especially when you’ve been promised a 3-hour game drive while watching the sun rise. Head to the dining tent and meet up with your fellow campers (who will undoubtedly become life-long friends), grab a cup of coffee and follow your camp master to the pick-up spot. By 5.30am, you’ve headed through the Pilanesberg National Park gates and into a landscape you’ll never forget. On our very first morning, we spotted no less than eleven lions fighting over territory and lounging in the road, an entire breeding herd of elephants closely followed by their adorable babies, tons of wildebeest, impala, kudu, zebra and giraffe – to name a few. We’re not kidding Hello Joburgers, we could have reached out and touched those Ellies… we didn’t! But we totally could have.

You’ll return to camp for a delicious, full buffet breakfast. Think pancakes and French toast, cereals and sausages and an abundance of fresh fruit. Then, the day is yours to do as you please. Grab a book, park off on the stoep outside your tent, and watch the monkeys play tag as the warthogs’ snuffle through the grass. Take a guided walk, indulge in a spa treatment or head into the nearest town and soak in cultural museums and historical sites. Did we mention that the famous Sun City is only a short drive away?

You’ll find it difficult to leave the sanctuary of camp. Everything you need is right here! At 5pm, you’ll be rounded up for another game drive, and your experienced guides have eagle-eye vision, so don’t worry about missing anything as night falls. Three hours later, you’re back at camp, watching the campfire roar as Shaun and his team cook up a 3-course traditional SA meal. If the weather permits, you’ll eat (and sip some seriously delicious vino) under a blanket of stars, and share stories amongst your fellow travelers – many of whom are foreign and experiencing an authentic African safari for the first time. It’s here where the most memories are made; sharing a glass of wine and a few laughs while toasting marshmallows over the fire, as the bush

comes alive around you. Just a tip from personal experience – try not to indulge too much, as you’ve got another 5am excursion before you head home! Hello Joburgers, we cannot recommend this experience enough! You’ll return feeling completely relaxed, utterly fulfilled and head over heels in love with nature. Tell us a more about your unique homeware range… The Gavin Rajah team has joined forces with @home to bring a limited-edition collection of hand crafted linen and scented candles to the market. Prêt À Vivre (which means ‘ready to live’) is a French-inspired collection, rich with intricate hand embroidery and fine detailing. The unique designs stand out as a top tier offering within the @home ranges. We’ve heard whispers about your new candles. Which one is your favourite? The hand poured massage candle collection is inspired by my love for travel, alternative healing and flowers. The range of scents has been designed to comfort and uplift, creating a sure sense of opulence in any room. The candles are

made from 100% soy wax and essential oils, and once melted, can be used as a moisturizer or massage oil! It’s difficult to choose a favourite, as I designed each for different specific purposes in mind, but if I had to choose right now, I’d say Rajahstan; Jasmin, Kashmir Orange Blossom and Patchouli.

What do you think 2018’s biggest trend will be? In terms of new lifestyle trends, I anticipate that people will be striving to create the optimum self. We’ll see people shifting their focus more to themselves, and taking care of their wellbeing more proactively. Everyone is, and should be, striving to function optimally.

Why is harnessing and developing local talent important to you? I believe it’s always important to develop local talent, especially women in the local community, in order for them to gain independence. Many of these women head up their households and are the sole breadwinners for their family. Becoming involved in the project enables them to provide for their children while developing their own innate potential and learning additional business skills.

Will we ever find you in sweats? Yes, absolutely! We’ll soon be announcing the launch of a new range of lounge and sleepwear, so you’ll definitely find me wearing these when they launch! What makes Jozi shine for you? I love the energy and the fast-paced lifestyle! What’s your favourite local eatery at the moment? I love Tashas Flamingo Room in Sandton
