ello Joburgers, do we have a treat for you! Our March issue is absolutely jampacked with fabulous shopping ideas, mouth-watering treats and a competition you’d be a fool not to enter! March madness has settled over the Hello Joburg office… February was a short month, which meant shorter deadlines and more stress. However, in true Jozi form, we’ve managed to pump out a spectacular mag - if I do say so myself - and I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as the team enjoyed (frantically) putting it together. Sharing is caring… That’s why we’ve featured our five favourite tapas style food spots. Nothing beats a night out with friends, a bottle of wine on the table and a spread of delectable finger foods, right? Found in the most unlikely of places, these five spots will give you the perfect excuse to meet up and indulge. Speaking of indulging – the new Brian Lara Rum Eatery in Linden has got to go on our list of favourite dining out spots. You can’t go wrong with a bit of rum! We’re big fan of cocktails, and this tropical paradise has their own unique twists on all your favourite classics. Oh, and before we forget, the food is pretty darn divine too! Love our cover? We’ll bet you wouldn’t believe that it was shot in at the incredibly spacious Indaba Hotel, Conference Centre and Spa. Tucked away in bustling Fourways, this centre is everything you think it is, and more. Not only does the hotel home some of the biggest acts to grace the stage at Montecasino, but the Mowana Spa is a slice of heaven. Indaba truly is a sanctuary, right here at home. You honestly wouldn’t be able to tell that you were still in old Jozi town. From HotPod Yoga and trendy must-try spots in Melville, to adorable hand-sewn moccasins for babies (made by a local celeb of course!) and the latest addition to the revamped Cresta Shopping Centre. Our March issue has a little something for everyone, and you’re going to love it!

SWEAT IT OUT

One yoga class away from a good mood One yoga class away from a good mood

H

ello Joburgers, we’ve got some hot news for you! HotPod Yoga (having officially launched in South Africa in 2015), have finally graced Joburg. It’s all the rage and if you’re an aspiring yogi, like us, then nama-not stay in bed, because this is an absolute must try!

GENERATING A BUZZ Sarmies done right! The Generator opens up onto 11th Street in bustling Parkmore, but they’ve made their stretch of pavement stick out. You’ll spot it easily enough, thanks to the wide windows and inviting atmosphere. The space is super chilled, with lots of copper accents, wooden tables and spots by the window, so that you can watch the traffic roll by as you chow down.

Here’s how it works… yourself plus nineteen others will be zipped into a cocoon-like, inflatable pod, which is heated to thirtyseven degrees. Designed to transport HotPod Yoga-goers into an otherworldly setting, the pod’s purpose is ‘to super-charge’ the yoga experience through its unique interior (dim, purple lighting, beautifully scented with urban-chill tunes). This heightens efficacy, mellows ambience and guarantees a consistent, immersive environment. The classes are an hour long and with the teacher’s expert techniques, knowledge and skills; it makes for a jam packed enlightened experience. We recommend you try Dani’s and Phumla’s classes! Classes take place mornings and evenings, with the first class at 5:30am and the last class at 6:30pm. The classes are intensely physical and emotionally profound, but in the best ways. It is an impressive workout and you’ll explore your bodies various dimensions and boundaries. Joburg - Number 66, 6th Street Linden, opposite Linden High school. The focus of this type of yoga is on vinyasa flow - in thirty-seven degrees! It is intoxicating. You’ll leave smiling (and sweating) and wanting more.

ust when you thought the age old sandwich couldn’t get any better, The Generator in Parkmore comes along and blows your socks off. It’s modern, minimalist and the food is packed full of flavour and character.

What we love the most about this spot is the menu, you start off by marking of what base you want – think olive Panini, baguette and even penne pasta. Then you choose your fillings from a list of fresh, enticing ingredients that includes Parma ham, bacon, fried eggs and even salmon.

6

In addition to letting you build your own mouth-watering, gourmet sarmies, The Generator serves up a pretty mean burger, which you can also embellish with all the goodies available on the menu. It’s the perfect spot to dash in and grab a bite during the week, and the ideal spot to chill out with your friends over the weekend. It’s incredibly vibey, and usually gets quite full over the weekend. Hello Joburg • March 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

But that’s not all – you’ve also got to pick your cheeses, your extra’s (which include jalapenos, fried peppers and black olives) and then your level of toastiness. You also have a selection of sides and sauces to indulge in – and the first sauce is free!

Hello Joburgers, it’s no wonder Melville attracts such vast groups of people who are searching for a night of adventure! AN EVENING AT THE 27 BOXES NIGHT MARKET. The beautifully built 27 Boxes centre (made from shipping containers!) houses over 40 stores that are all unique in their offerings. Enjoy traditional Indian cuisine at Curry in A Box, or sink your canines into a good old steak sandwich at Philly Cheese Steaks. Built with much consideration for the environment, the artsy centre receives plenty of support from masses of visitors and locals who come every Wednesday for the night market. rom a 17 bedroom hotel in 1952, known then as the Little Roseneath Hotel, to 260 bedrooms across 17 hectares of landscaped gardens, today. The Indaba Hotel Spa and Conference Centre in Fourways is one of Joburg’s most sought after venues…

TIME OUT IN THE

CONCRETE JUNGLE Are you the nostalgic type? Rest assured that the hotel’s humble beginnings are still very much a part of the establishment. The original 17 room building now homes various luxury rooms, including the honeymoon suite. There’s an idea if you’re planning a little getaway this month! The Indaba is also a popular wedding venue, so the team on the ground are experts in romance… all you need to do is arrive. Thank us later - or invite us to the wedding! We love an ‘I do’ on a rolling lawn. The Indaba Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre is a juxtaposition of the frenetic pace of Jozi life, and an oasis of calm and serenity - especially with its two dams, green gardens, Mowana Spa and extensive birdlife. With its full business infrastructure and its resort-like feel, The Indaba Hotel is ideal for a conference, meetings, or a little holiday if you can’t escape the city. For the business minded, facilities include 24 conference rooms (from executive boardrooms to large banquet venues seating up to 500 people), a full business centre, free WiFi and complimentary hotel shuttles to Montecasino, Fourways Mall, Cedar Square and Dainfern Square. For those who want to relax, the plush beds, three pools, two tennis courts and famous Indaba breakfast and Spa are just a few of the perks available.

The Mowana Spa takes its name from the majestic Baobab Tree of African Lore and Legend, and offers relaxation and then some! Settled in for a tribal massage, coupled with the trickle of flowing water and delicate wind chimes, you won’t be the first to feel a million miles away from Fourways. The African Skies Night Spa Pamper Journey, which includes a 3-course spa dinner and 3 indulgent treatments,

only echoes that ‘far from the city’ sentiment with its bush-style atmosphere. You can recreate the experience at home, thanks to the Mowana Mobile spa, or ‘MOM’ as she’s affectionately known. This mobile spa is ideal for high stress corporate environments, wellness days or indulgent pamper parties – or just because! All that chilling out can work up an appetite. Guests at the Indaba can enjoy the award winning Chief Boma or Epsom Terrace. The food really is something to rave about which is why the Chief Boma is a 3 time Restaurant Association Of South Africa winner. The hotel’s ethos and approach to customers is another reason to stay there. “We don’t believe in tough customers,” says Sales and Marketing Manager, Sharon Hunink. “Rather, they’re usually tired, cranky or hungry after a long conference or period of traveling. And that’s why they come to us. A great sleep in a comfortable room and a good meal works wonders – add to that the Service Excellence for which the Indaba is renowned, and most guests leave our ‘home’ happy. We see ‘tough’ customers as an opportunity to turn them into loyal, raving fans, who become part of our family.”

March must-try’s at Indaba! Get involved with the Indaba Hotel’s ‘Give Back Campaign’ with Mowana Spa, as they team up with Shumbashaba’s Horses Helping People. These programmes touch the lives of a great many people, the majority of whom come from Diepsloot - a neighbouring township on the northern outskirts of Johannesburg. Every Pamper Journey booked during the month of March 2017 will see Mowana Spa donate R100 to Shumbashaba.

For those tiny toes

We love relating to celebrities… and to say that we love Running Bear Moccasins would be the understatement of the year! Created by Lisa K (the wife of singer Danny K), this brand of adorable footwear is just too cute to handle. Running Bear was inspired by Lisa’s personal struggle to find stylish, practical footwear for her son Jayden. These leather moccasins are incredibly soft and imitate walking barefoot, helping to strengthen muscles and ligaments. Each pair has an elasticised opening, making them easy to slip on and off, and – more importantly – they stay on! They’re handmade with the highest quality leather, and they’re extremely durable. Perfect for pre-walkers and toddlers.

You’ll want to walk a mile in these…

I

t doesn’t matter if you hate them, or love them enough to have thousands – shoes are essential. For you and your little ones. So ladies, we’ve sussed out the trendiest footwear. Click your heels together and get shopping!

Our favourite addition can be found in the evening selection… a gorgeous pair of black suede pumps with Swarovski crystal bows on the pointed tips of each shoe. Talk about adding glam to your outfit! Our second go-to pair is definitely the Love pair – available in red or black suede with a luxe heart embroidered and the word ‘love’ in the middle.

Not many people associate Pretty Ballerinas with winter – but they’ve changed that with their II terrain selection. The chunky footwear has thick soles that are also toothed for extra grip. Ultra-light and complete with that leather sheen, they’ll spruce up those winterinspired outfits in no time.

There’s something for every women – whether you’re a tom-boy or girly-girl, the outdoors type or a punk rocker. In fact, last year was the 50th anniversary of the launch of Vans skate wear, so pretty Ballerina launched their own version of skate wear. It’s a more sophisticated look, complete with stylish graffiti print and a light flexible sole. Feeling nostalgic yet?

This Caribbean inspired eatery ticks all the right boxes. With an impressive ambience and an adventurous and passionate style, there really isn’t much to dislike, unless you’re allergic to fun. This rum bar offers fresh blends of superb cuisine with inventive, innovative touches. Not only is it fashionable and a glorious achievement for Joburg, it’s the favorite local hangout at the moment and we’re about to tell you why… Expect bright neon signs, bananas, and palm trees, lamps recycled as décor, millennials and Hello Joburg • March 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

heavyweight cocktails. All the cocktails are sixty bucks and the number one choice has to be the Cuba Libre - which is basically their take on a rum and coke. Next up is The Pina Colada, another must because who doesn’t want to drink their cocktail out of a pineapple? Also their Bloody Mary is devilish and comes served with a slice of crispy bacon. Yum! Not overlooking the wine connoisseurs, they also have a lovely La Bri Merlot or Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc. Or why not just pull out all the stops with a bottle of Moet? Champagne showers anyone? You just might need one after the lick-your-fingers crabtastic curry. Its gooey and sticky, it’s viscous and flavorsome. Delicate yet spicy, and it tastes like it’s made by your neighborhood aunty.

Soothingly wholesome and heart-warming, it is delicious, and you can bet that we’ll be back for seconds!

More often than not, restaurants have one or two signature dishes. Not at this rum bar! The menu, although small and intricate, delivers in flavor. The salt and pepper squid will satisfy the taste buds whilst the melon and feta salad is refreshing and divine. We recommend ordering a few dishes and sharing. And by the way carnivores, apparently their eight hundred gram barbeque basted rack of ribs are the best in town. While gobbling down the tasty dishes, you’ll find the most artistic and on-trend youngsters in town. But before you mingle against the congruous plant backdrop, don’t forget about dessert. Their dessert changes on a daily basis, which keeps things interesting, but apparently the rum and raisin ice cream is delectable. Just putting it out there. One word of advice Hello Joburgers, BOOK! Don’t just arrive, leisurely traipse in and expect to find a table - you’ll be disappointed! 56, 4th Avenue, Linden. 1 076 320 9739

chef of the month SHANE SMIT

T

Head Chef at Jamie’s Italian SA

he doors only opened two months ago, but Jamie’s Italian in Melrose Arch is cooking up a storm… literally! They’ve been fully booked every night since they opened, and we were lucky enough to catch up with Shane Smit, the Head Chef. He laughs about it now. “I used to bunk lectures all the time, head to the supermarket and buy a whole bunch of random ingredients. Then come home and start prepping my own dishes.

I had no clue how things or flavors were mixed together or what I was even making, but the thrill of being in the kitchen and interacting with food is where I felt most happy. To be honest we’re kind of glad he isn’t a lawyer – his bubbly personality would have been lost in a courtroom, that’s for sure! Of course, the first thing we wanted to know was how did Shane wind up heading up the team at Jamie’s - literally one of Joburg’s most popular restaurants at the moment. He revealed that when he was in the UK, he met up with Marcos Georgiou, Jamie’s Italian’s first head chef. Georgiou later became the International Chef Director as the phenomenon expanded across the world. Marcos took Shane under his wing at the first Jamie’s Italian in Oxford, and Shane worked with the team for just under a year. Fast forward few years later and Shane received the message, informing him that Jamie’s Italian was finally coming to South Africa. Shane says his heart nearly stopped with excitement. “I feel so blessed to have been chosen to do this job and I’m happy and excited to be sharing the Jamie’s Italian experience with South Africa. It’s such an amazing culture, and to work with like-minded individuals really does bring out the best in you. Jamie’s Italian is truly a family, where growth is one of our main objectives. We want to see our family members fly!” he says with a huge grin. He initially wanted to be a lawyer, and was in his third year of doing LLB at the University of Pretoria when he quit to pursue his passion for food.

His love for food originated when he was young, growing up in Hazyview. “I used to go out with my father to pick fresh mussels from the rocks when I was around the age of four. We then immediately went home to steam and eat them. Some were pickled, and even today that remains one of my favorite things to eat. There’s something so amazing about the nostalgia food can bring upon a person. It’s that warm, happy memory that will last a lifetime and sharing those memories about food makes it that much more special because everyone can relate to it.” We highly enjoyed our pasta when we visited – all handmade from scratch on the premises, might we add, so of course we wanted to know what Shane’s favorite dish on the menu was. No surprises – it’s also pasta. The Prawn Linguine to be specific. Jamie’s Italian worldwide sells on average one prawn linguine per minute – that’s a pretty staggering statistic. We highly recommend that you visit Jamie’s, but do make sure to book in advance! It’s always buzzing. 5 www.jamieoliver.com/italian/south-africa/ 1 010 007 4646 | T @JamiesItalianSA @JamiesItalianSA | f @jamiesitaliansa Hello Joburg • March 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

MONTHLY MOUTHFULS… Of food and beer at SAB world of Beer!

B

eer and food pairings are the way of the future, and SAB World of Beer is paving the way with these delightful events.

Taking place once a month on a Saturday, at the five-star tourist attraction in vibey Newtown, each pairing includes six SAB beers and a five course meal. The menu changes every month, and guests will have their attention drawn to the mouthfeel, flavour and aroma of each beer, as well as how it enhances the flavours and textures of the food. The next events are set to take place on 11 March, 8 April, 13 May, 10 June and 15 July. Each date has a stellar menu… think ostrich carpaccio, cold oak wood smoked salmon, boerewors corn dogs, strawberry sorbet and banoffee cheese cake – to name a few. If you’re a foodie who loves a cold

one, you’ve got to try this out at least once. We promise, you won’t be disappointed. Prices range from R495 to R600 per person, with couple options available. Regrettably, no one under the age of 18 years old is allowed to participate. Another must-try has got to be the tour… it’ll only set you back R115 and it includes two beers, a commemorative glass, and a guided tour. That’s your weekend sorted! 15 Helen Joseph Street, Newtown 1 011 836 4900 5 www.worldofbeer.co.za t @SABWoB f @SABWorldOfBeer Hello Joburg • March 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

create a menu that was extensive, but takes different tastes and moods into account – and it has quite a few unique meals and combinations to choose from! She admits that not every day is easy, and that with so many franchises and restaurants being run mainly by managers, the personal approach is lost. However, she doesn’t let that stifle her passion, which is food and people. “To create a wonderful meal, to see people's enjoyment, to be part of their conversations and laughter is the most gratifying feeling that I can get out of my work. For me, my work is not a job but a part of who I am.” When she’s not bustling around the Caffe (which isn’t very often, because she’s a hard worker), Chrisoula enjoys eating out and experiencing other restaurants. “One of my favourites is Alfie's in Pretoria and Kream in Mall of Africa is another.” Clearwater Mall, Hendrik Potgieter Road 1 011 6754435 f @CaffeFinetsa

She admits that she always had a dream of owning a restaurant with a café feel. To get her foot in the door, she joined the Cafe Fino franchise. “It had the characteristics I was looking for and I ran with it for 10 years,” she says. When the contract was up, she was given the chance to de-franchise and develop her own concept, and she ran with it! The result is Caffe Finetsa, a cosy, family run spot to grab breakfast, lunch or dinner. Chrisoula adds that thanks to this stellar opportunity, she was finally able to

TAPAS BARS

in Jozi

H

ello Joburgers, what’s not to love about small Spanish savory dishes, typically served with drinks at a bar? We’re obsessed with Joburg’s culinary scene at the moment, so we thought we’d put together our top five tapas style bars.

28

Escondido at Post Office Centre, Illovo What to order: The Seafood Paella for two - it will blow your socks off! The bucket of prawns with white wine sauce is also to-diefor. You can’t go wrong ordering their famous deconstructed pulled pork burrito. Why eat here? It’s the trendiest spot in town. Escondido is consistent, dependable and serves excellent food, offering creative and surprising interpretations of gastronomy. f @EscondidoTapas 1 011 268 0058 Hello Joburg • March 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Urbanologi on Fox Street, Ferreirasdorp What to order: Duck Pancakes (only if they’re available). Another dish that will always be one of our favorites - the Banana-barley malt ice cream. You also can’t leave without trying their steamed buns… brioche with truffle crème and pea salt. Why go? It’s just launched in Jozi and is styled to perfection. You’ll wine and dine all night. Yes, it’s safe and yes, it’s worth the trip. You’re basically guaranteed deliciously elegant Asian Fusion cuisine. 5 www.urbanologi.co.za 1 011 492 1399

Workshop 55 in Parktown North What to order: You’ll be charged an entrance fee of R210 – this includes your choice of three dishes. We recommend the Hickory smoked Octopus, the velvety baked Camembert with exotic mushrooms and the Asian Barbequed braised beef short rib. You’ll land up ordering more, just accept it. Why go? For the finely crafted drinks. Also, before or after dinner visit their 55 – a quirky Victorian 1900’s lounge warehouse. 5 www.workshop55.co.za 1 011 442 6252 Lima Tapas Bar at Montecasino, Fourways What to order: It’s not optional Hello Joburgers - you have to try their sushi burgers, and you can thank us later. Go for the crab or the tuna option. Then the list is endless, from tacos and empanadas to ceviche, the menu is extensive and exciting. The drinks? Leave room for their twists on classics like the Leblon Coconut Caipirinha or the Spicy Jalapeño Margarita. Why go? You’ll get a lot more than you bargained for. It’s innovative, it’s fresh and its stateof-the-art 5 www.limatapasbar.co.za 1 011 465 5991 EB Social Kitchen & Bar in Hyde Park Shopping Centre What to order: Chef Russell Armstrong allows you to graze through his latest interpretation of social tapas, but be warned this food packs a punch. It’ll leave you salivating, maybe even drooling. Order the poached squid, chorizo and lemon aranccini – it’s yummy, delicate and oh-so crisp. Go all out and order the warm barbequed eel, crab, sushi rice, wasabi tobikko and Japanese dressing. Leave space for dessert because the Almond panna cotta is happiness personified. Why go? This high-end tapas style restaurant will leave you bright-eyed and eager for more. 5 www.hydeparkcorner.co.za 1 011 268 6039

There’s a reason everyone raves about it…

Out darned spot!

W

e only trust a handful of products to keep our skin looking perfect. One of them is definitely Celltone, simply because this unique skin care range is made with Snail Gel extract!

beauty & wellness

CELLTONE IS SKINCARE! Must moisturise! Apply Spot Treatment Moisturiser after the toner, twice a day to ensure that skin is kept moisturized. To reduce the sebum production (which causes oily skin), moisture levels in the skin need to be maintained. We love this stuff because it’s packed with glycerine, argan oil and shea butter.

Nobody has time for spotty skin! Spot control - Face wash is gentle enough to be used every morning and evening. It’ll rid your skin of excess grease and grime, leaving it feeling fresh and clean without excessive drying. Be sure to follow up with toner and moisturizer for best results - the key to great skin is a good, daily cleansing ritual.

Stay in control Perfect for problematic skin, the Intensive Spot Control Serum is used as a booster treatment to prevent and fight breakouts on your skin. It’s designed to allow better penetration of active the ingredients - Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid, Sarcosine and Tea tree oil.

Tone it up…

In a rush?

Using Spot control Toner! It’s made to condition the skin after cleansing. We love it because it has no alcohol – that means no dry skin or regreasing too quickly. It restores the pH of the skin, as well as the acid mantle, ensuring that skin is protected from the growth of spot forming germs.

The Spot Blitzer Roll-On Concentrate has a fast action spot drying formula, complete with germ fighting properties to stop those suckers in their tracks. And it’s dead easy to apply – roll right on!

Love your skin!

All about hydration Women swear by Celltone Tissue Oil, because it’s the only Tissue Oil to contain 7 essential oils and snail gel. We love it because it helps prevents stretchmarks, wrinkles and aging skin by locking in that precious moisture. It also helps prevent skin damage and helps with healing. Perfect for growing teenagers, pregnant moms and outdoorsy people.

5 www.celltone.co.za t @CelltoneSA @celltonesa

Bye-bye blemishes! Celltone Gel can be applied to your face and body, and it’s clinically proven to reduce the appearance of dark spots, stretch marks and the appearance of wrinkles.

The sun loves your skin a little too much, so take care. Slap some Celltone Sunscreen SPF50+ on there. This sunscreen combines the finest skin care science with superior sun care ingredients to create a product that protects and nourishes. It’s packed with anti-oxidants to fight free radicals. It has a non-whitening formula for invisible protection (no greasy white residue), it’s water resistant and suitable for acne prone skin. No wonder the Proteas choose to use Celltone! WHAT: We’d definitely recommend Constitution Hill. A former prison to hordes of men, women and children, Constitution Hill bears testament to South Africa’s complex past. It’s a living museum that documents South Africa’s journey to democracy. This site bore witness to the incarceration of people like Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Ghani and Fatima Meer - to name a few. It’s now home to exhibitions and museum halls and is an emotional experience. The spirit and strength of South Africa’s long passed struggle heroes emanate through the building.

JOZI IS A GOOD SPORT

On your marks, get set… go!

E

ver since South Africa hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Johannesburg has raised the bar when it comes to hosting sporting events. Every kind of sport you’re into, you are guaranteed to find somewhere to do it in the City of Gold, because Joburgers feel the gees!

The Soweto Derby sees SA’s Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates battle it out on the soccer field. It takes place at the FNB Stadium in Soweto and attracts thousands of soccer fans and stars, as it’s one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. If you’re a lover of footie, you’ve got to catch the game. The 702 Walk the Talk is one of the most well-known charity walking events in Joburg. Thousands participate in the 5km, 8km or 15km race to raise funds and awareness for charities. Each person that crosses the finish line gets a medal for participating, and it’s one of the most enjoyable events of the year. 5 www.walkthetalk.co.za The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge shuts down half the city and thousands of cyclists push themselves to the limit to participate. Riders pedal an incredible 94.7km, starting at the Riversands Commercial Park through Kyalami, Rosebank, the CBD and back through Randburg and Fourways. Most participants ride for a cause and to date, the Challenge has raised over R53.4 million through the initiative, which has been distributed to more than 127 registered charities. 5 www.cyclechallenge.co.za Every year, thousands participate in the iconic Soweto Marathon – it’s one of the most

popular races in Joburg. It’s not difficult to see why, either. Choose between a 10km fun run, test your skills in the half marathon or go the distance and participate in the full marathon (a whopping 42.2kms!) You’ll venture past some historic places, including the Hector Pieterson memorial, Vilakazi Street, Morris Isaacson High School, Regina Mundi Church, Walter Sisulu Square and the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. It’s a gorgeous route, and a great way to discover Jozi. 5 www.sowetomarathon.com The Sansui Summer Cup is fast becoming one of Jozi’s hottest horse racing events. It’s action packed, full of sun, excitement and fun and takes place every year at the Turffontein Racecourse. Celebrities arrive in droves, dressed to the nines and place their bets on their favourite horses. It’s definitely a lifechanging event. f SANSUI Summer Cup The Hollard Jozi Urban Mountain Bike Adventure (JUMA) is definitely not for the faint hearted! It has two routes – a 54km and 22km urban bike ride through the biggest urban forest in the world… AKA Jozi. It’s so intense that the routes feature storm drains, underground tunnels and even floating bridges. Serious sportsman spend months training in the hopes if pocketing a share of R180000 in cash. 5 www.juma.co.za The Land Rover Africa Cup is one of the most highly anticipated Polo Tournaments of the year. Countries like Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria and more battle sit out on the field in order to take home coveted trophy. KIDDIES LOVE CRESTA

P

arents can rest easy at Cresta Shopping Centre, because the mall recently launched its amazing Family Room Oasis. Hello Joburgers, it’s the kind of place that mums and dads dream about…

Words Victoria Taylor

Taking your littles one into a shopping centre is a big commitment. You’re guaranteed at least a half hour of walking, shortly followed by a tantrum, dirty nappy or sticky face. As a parent, don’t you long for a quiet, clean place to calm your little ones down, get them cleaned up and perhaps (is it too much to ask for?) learn something?

The Oasis even has the stamp of approval from Parenting expert, Nikki Bush, who attended the launch. Bush is the co-author of three bestselling books – ‘Future-proof Your Child’,’ Easy Answers to Awkward Questions’ and ‘Tech-Savvy Parenting’.

Cresta Shopping Centre heard the cries from Jozi’s parents, and it’s delivered. Brilliantly! The new Family Room Oasis is exactly that – an oasis for parents and children. The space is big and the walls are covered in colorful decals, giving the room a comforting, homey feel.

“One of the things that Nikki Bush shared in her presentation resonated with me – we need to keep finding ways to connect with our children. We hope the family room oasis, will make it a little bit easier for parents and caregivers to connect with their children on their shopping days out,” says Virginia Bester, General Manager of Cresta Shopping Centre.

The Family Room Oasis is basically your nursery away from home.

Cresta Shopping Centre has upped its game with recent renovations and additions – many of which are still to be announced. However, we’re not too sure what can beat the much-need, and highly appreciated sanctuary that is the Family Room Oasis.

The Oasis can be found in the lower levels of the Centre’s recently renovated food and entertainment court. The space offers parents a sanctuary to change nappies, feed babies and gives children a creative spot to wind down from the excitement of shopping. This place is decked out – complete with lockers, pram and trolley stations, and a kitchenette with microwave ovens to warm up bottles or food and an interactive playroom with tons of toys. There’s also a nappy changing room that has proper foam mattresses at the changing stations and dedicated basins, as well as a family bathroom and a private breastfeeding room with a rocking chair.

Parenting expert Nikki Bush shared her 10 Commandments for taking children to shopping centres. Visit www.hellojoburg.co.za to find out what they are. From Koe’siestes to Kneidlach This comedy is a uniquely South African, onewoman show that focuses on the experiences of Chantal - a girl from the Cape Flats, as she navigates a world of new Jewish experiences. She goes from meeting the boyfriend’s family at her first Shabbos, to late-night benching (and that’s not pumping iron either, by the way!). She wrestles with confusion over her identity and the various labels that are placed on her while trying to get to grips with Yiddish, cooking and decades-old faribels!

The exhibition opens at 19:00 on 2 March and will run until the 2 April at The Melrose Gallery. Other works by Esther will also be featured.

Opening on the 15th of March, this exhibition will magically weave together two forms of artistic expression, imagery and dance and is not to be missed.

Running until the 18th of March, this play, written and acted by the explosively funny Chantal Stanfield is set to be a good laugh. Every time we’ve watched her perform, we see a different angle to this multifaceted television and stage actress, and we are looking forward to watching her latest offering.

For those who love a challenge!

o you love the idea of acting like James Bond or a ghost hunter? Then you’ll want to head to LostLand – the latest in the Escape Room trend that is sweeping across our City of Gold. You’ve only got 60 minutes and the clock starts ticking the second the doors close. Better hurry… Escape Rooms are physical adventure games that are taking the world by storm. You only get an hour to find the clues, solve the puzzles and get out. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong! The clues are little rascals and can prove hard to find. Putting everything together coherently can be a challenge, and the time limit puts an extra bit of pressure on your team. LostLand recently opened in Rivonia and people are flocking there to get their game on. The Hello Joburg team decided to try it out, and although our members played each room, we won’t give too much away. LostLand is ideal for a team building exercise or a family day out, as your team needs to consist of two to six people. The games are suitable for all ages, although those under the age of 12 are advised to bring an adult because some of these puzzles are tough!

Words Victoria Taylor

Although no physical strength is required, you’re definitely going to have your wits about you and your thinking cap firmly secured. “You’re working against the clock and you have to use all of your senses to solve the challenges you face. It’s very exciting,” explained LostLand founder, Virginia Shang, who first experienced

the thrill of an escape room while on holiday in China. She added that the games are designed to promote team work and cooperation. At LostLand, you get to choose between three rooms, each with fictional settings, and each one ranges in difficulty. The Castle Secret is set in (you guessed it) an abandoned castle, where a heroic lord lived

and died – shortly after suffering from a mental breakdown. Rumour has it that the now derelict castle is haunted… piano music can be heard, as well as the sound of a woman crying. Are you brave enough to venture inside, and what secrets will you find? Your Mission Impossible, should you choose to accept it, is to be a sneaky ninja, break into your enemies lair and rescue your teammates. There’s a catch – you have to escape successfully, and in the designated time, or you fail the mission. If you commit to playing the Prison Break, you’ll find yourself trapped in a dark, dank cell for a crime you didn’t commit! You have one chance to break out of your cell, collect all the right evidence and flee from the coppers in order to clear your name. Marguerite Gotthard has created what she calls ‘a slice of France in the Magaliesburg’. Charming, with great value for money, this tropical forest is a French affair like no other. It almost belongs back in the 1800’s, with its magical flair and mesmerising charm. It’s an unforgettable experience and it’s right on your doorstep. Rather than the usual monotonous, modern contemporary luxury, La Provence sets itself apart because it’s the reverse. It’s all about reading a book barefoot, while taking in the

breath-taking garden views. It’s about watching the Kingfisher birds as you sip your morning tea. It’s about connecting with the old world, and this is precisely why we fell in love with it. There’s a healthy spatter of nature on location and it’s celebrated at the Forest Zen Spa. Indulge in a full body hot stone massage whilst listening to the humming of the birds and the trickling sounds of the Berg River. Another must try is the wonderful meditation and forest walks across the river and up the mountain. Make sure you take a wander inside the main house and visit the gallery of Charles Gotthard’s work. His works have been bought by art museums across South Africa, such as the Pretoria Art Museum, Potchefstroom and the Tasgallery in Cape Town. He creates sculptures that are in a word – extraordinary! It may all be about the setting, but for us, the main focus was on the service. Jeremiah was our butler for the weekend, and with fifteen years of experience at La Provence, his passion and craving for his work was constant. From the moment we entered our Parisian

country style room, to our dinner basket being served, Jeremiah made each moment even more memorable. The only downside was we couldn’t take him home with us! Thank you Jeremiah and Au Revoir La Provence Book a couple’s package! It includes a delicious dinner served inside, or out amongst the beautiful gardens on stone benches. Complete with candlelight and French music. The lovely old 1929 Chef truck Pub and Railway sports pub will be on duty with an assortment of drinks. You also get a brunch breakfast, served in the gardens by the river, as well as two full body stone therapy massages, set in the forest down by the river. La Provence D’Afrique is situated 75 km from Johannesburg, on the R24 Krugersdor p-Rustenburg main road, just outside the village in Magaliesburg. 1 082 900 8205 5 www.laprovencedafrique.co.za 8 outofafrika@telkomsa.net

much more. Video conferencing can also be arranged. Wi-fi is no hassle either - you can get a secure login just for your group, ensuring connection is strong and fast.

The hotel also has a backup generator on site, so should the power go out, you can keep your meeting or event running without a hitch – great for those days when Eskom is not playing ball.

Catering for groups is a breeze, from arrival tea and coffee through to tea time snacks, a buffet lunch, cocktail snacks, bar services and room service, or even a plated dinner in the ballroom. The Hilton will ensure that your specific catering requirements are met, and are within your budgetary guidelines. Lunch can be held in your own private venue, or the Trade winds restaurant can be utilised for larger groups. Try cuisines like Malay, Chinese, Japanese, French Bistro and Mediterranean at the restaurant or enjoy a typical South African braai at the outdoor barbecue area. Faces bar (located right next to the reception area) has a wide variety of exotic cocktails on offer, and is the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. Did we mention the hotel also has an onsite private health club, with a sauna for all hotel guests, and personal trainers? There’s also a tennis court and outdoor pool with a gazebo for those who want to enjoy outdoor exercise or relax on the weekend. Working with the conferencing team at Hilton is a pleasure. The entire Hilton team is on the ball and ready to assist wherever they can. We’ve got to say, having a variety of restaurants and services available on the property makes hosting a group a much easier experience! 138 Rivonia Road, Sandton 1 011 322 1888 5 www.hilton.com

THE RAND SHOW WELCOMES JOHANNESBURG DESIGN WEEK This year, the iconic Rand Show will include a Johannesburg Design Week, giving local designers the opportunity to strut their stuff in front of over 200 000 people. A truly South African brand, the Rand Show has been part of the fabric of the lives of four generations of South Africans, making memories for over 120 years. After a series of brainstorming sessions, it was decided by Dave Nemeth from Trend Forward and the management team of the Rand show that a Johannesburg Design Week should be added to the event, which takes place from 14-23 April 2017.

Until recently, design in Johannesburg has been an exclusive concept, available only through specialised platforms and only to those who could afford its premium prices. Cape Town has been active in the design space for many years, with its Design Indaba attracting thousands of local and international visitors, but it has been mostly directed at advertising, design and related industries.

As there is nothing equal to this in Johannesburg, the decision has been made to merge the Johannesburg Design Week into the Rand Show, so that more emerging designers have the opportunity to showcase their original designs and sell their products to a receptive audience. It will also highlight locally manufactured goods with a strong sense of design that meet international standards of quality.

7Michelle minutes with and Riaan Garforth-Venter

This is the power couple we all strive to be like. Michelle was a Top Billing presenter and the host of several environmental shows, while Riaan is one of SA’s best loved television personalities.

How did each of you find your life’s work? We think we’ve been pretty lucky in that we have both known what our talents and skills are from an early age. Michelle knew at 12 years old that she was going to be an in-front of camera person, and Riaan has been building and woodworking from the age of 8. It’s a long-road to get to the top of your game, and it takes a focused mind, often to the exclusion of family and other life experiences. This is what is so nice about our relationship - we had our son when we are a little older, and can really focus on him and our family time together. You’re now based in Atlanta. What do you miss about South Africa? Michelle says she misses the multi-cultural melting pot of passionate people, Marmite and her wonderful Father, Gus Garforth. Riaan misses his lovely daughters and his 90-year old Mother, Ouma Suzie. And of course, Mrs. Ball’s Chutney. We miss our humour from back-home, we miss the Acacia trees and the sounds of the cicadas in the evening, we miss the Highveld thunderstorms you can set your watch by and the stormy Cape Town weather - we miss so much. Reading a novel or on kindle? Michelle is an avid reader. Riaan is not! He prefers researching stuff on google like cars, machines, woodworking tips. But Michelle reads non-stop; she’s a member of the Atlanta Public Library, as buying books just got way too expensive. t Michelle - @EcoJourno t Riaan - @DIYmetRiaan f Michelle Garforth Venter f Riaan Garforth-Venter
